According to three recent reports most of the discrediting was without foundation. Seems to me to be mostly hysteria of the easily led stoked by vested interests.

I don’t see how anyone can have already taken an absolute stance – there is a stack of science out there and there will be a lot more science to come.

What interests me is the motivation of the AGW deniers ? What do they get out of it ? Sure there may be vested interests funding it at one level.

I think part of it is herd mentality. On a blog like this being an AGW denier is the norm: by being a denier you fit in.

What does happen will always have more veracity than what the models say will happen. The best predictions for temperature rises as a result of a doubling of CO2 fall in the range of 0.5c to 1.2c. Not catastrophic at all.
Anyway, it’s a moot point now, we have an ETS. NZ will be fine.

Mr Karam said recently that anyone depicting David as guilty was “on thin ice” because he had been found not guilty and so “there were not two perspectives”. ( http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/3825663/Bain-murders-in-theatre-whodunit )
So what was Karam doing writing a book in 1997 claiming David’s innocence, when at that time he had been found guilty ? Seems that “two perspectives” are allowed when it’s Karam who disagrees with the verdict…

Interesting piece from Powerline on NASA’s new “mission”. This take is looking at the coverage (as of 24 hours ago) of the Al Jazzerra interview that NASA head Charles Borden did where he talked about the foremost task of NASA – a Muslim outreach program. Powerline did a search for any words about this in “big five” news areas. The results are quite astounding:
New York Times: 0.
Washington Post: 0.
NBC Nightly News: 0.
ABC World News: 0.
CBS Evening News: 0.

They then quote Bill Otis, who has one possible explanation for the non-coverage of this story: Why The Silent Treatment

When I was a student, in the 1970s, the world was coming to an end. The adults told me so. They said the population explosion was unstoppable, mass famine was imminent, a cancer epidemic caused by chemicals in the environment was beginning, the Sahara desert was advancing by a mile a year, the ice age was retuning, oil was running out, air pollution was choking us and nuclear winter would finish us off.

I am not making this up. By the time I was 21 years old I realized that nobody had ever said anything optimistic to me – in a lecture, a television program or even a conversation in a bar – about the future of the planet and its people, at least not that I could recall. Doom was certain.

That very much rings a bell in terms of my memories as a kid in the 1970’s!

Under Comrade Obama’s rule there will be several winners as well as losers. Here’s a list of each.

Winners

1. Muslims – Whether Obama is a closet Muslim or not he is a hater of the biblical heritage of this country and will do all within his power to empower God’s enemies.
2. Public Schools – The authority of Public schools will be increased to further dilute parental rights.
3. Homosexuals – Same as the Muslims. Liberals want our society destroyed and promoting homosexuality is a great way to do it.
4. Anyone evil – Don’t get your hopes up about getting help from the Bailout. Our society is now the property of evil people. Therefore, the low-lifes, the dishonest and the greedy will benefit the most.
5. China & Russia – Since Obama hates the USA as much as they do, he will do nothing to strengthen us against them. Watch for Russia to get a military base in this hemisphere and Obamie will say, “They have every right to have one over here.”

Losers

1. The Military – As if George Bush’s financial abandonment of our Military wasn’t bad enough, Obama will do all he can to stop weapons’ development and purchases. Training will be reduced and you will see more soldiers prosecuted for deeds done in war. Our Military will be too busy looking over their shoulders to concentrate on killing our enemies. Watch for the Marines, always viewed with hatred by Liberals, to be singled out for the most intense hardships and acts of treason against them. He has to weaken our Military to the point they can’t win the next war. Queers will be admitted and ruin the effectiveness and morale of our troops.
2. The South – The South has always been more Bible oriented than the North. Liberals hate the South for this reason. Watch for legislation that will always leave the South coming up short.
3. Free Speech – Most of you have already been instructed by your TV in what you are permitted to say. You will lose far more speech freedom under Obama than you can imagine. If you are afraid to say what you think you are already a slave.
4. Christianity – While apostate churches and Rick Warren’s “Starbucks Baptist” churches will do fine, this government will seek to curtail freedom of religion.

Riots likely in Oakland

A verdict of guilty of involuntary manslaughter has been arrived at in the case of a Bay Area Rapid Transit Police officer who shot an unarmed suspect in January last year. Oakland is likely to see riots in the next couple of hours as a result of the verdict, with various groups agitating for action ‘on the streets’ while local businesses have spent the last few days boarding up their shops with plywood in anticipation.

One local lawyer set up a twitter account called ‘oakland riots’ as a way to keep informed of the events http://twitter.com/oaklandriots

Oakland is a strange place. I ran a campaign there and I still don’t understand it on anything other than a fairly superficial level. You’ve got characters like Jerry Brown, all sorts of leftist green groups, a strong Black Muslim presence, and more shady powerbrokers than a Hollywood gangster movie. One word from someone few people have heard of can motivate large numbers of people… I recall being informed that a campaign stop at a bakery (which I took to be a “handshake with small business” photo op) was one of the most significant of the campaign because it was a Muslim bakery and owned by a man who, with no outward signs of wealth or connection, could influence vast tracts of the African American vote.

Considering the black victim, unarmed, was shot while laying face down and prosecutors wanted a guilty verdict to a murder charge it seems possible things will erupt, driven by understandable anger. The cop’s defence was that he meant to pull his tazer, but pulled a .40 calibre handgun “by mistake”. That doesn’t of course explain why he then pulled the trigger, or why he wanted to tazer a suspect who was subdued and laying face down in the first place.

Rex, the shooting of Oscar Grant certainly raises a lot of questions. the verdict of involuntary manslaughter seems a bit strange when as you say, he was shot in the back while lying on the ground.

While I agree with the general sentiment of the article you linked to, Tom – that there exists much that we would call ‘scare-mongering’ – I have to take issue with at least SOME of the points raised in the following portion of the same article:

Not only are human beings wealthier, they are also healthier, wiser, happier, more tolerant, less violent, more equal. Check it out – the data is clear. Yet if anything the pessimists had only grown more certain, shrill and apocalyptic. We were facing the `end of nature’, the `coming anarchy’, a `stolen future’, our `final century’ and a climate catastrophe. Why, I began to wonder did the failure of previous predictions have so little impact on this litany?

Especially where it says, “human beings … are … wiser, happier, more tolerant, less violent, more equal.”

I see LESS intelligence/wisdom, less genuine happiness, less tolerance, and certainly MORE violence, and less equality.

We see the general dumbing down within the education system; the average punter actually believes much of what the MSM presents as ‘fact’; people chase after hedonistic pursuits but never find genuine happiness and meaning; unless you’re a member of an ‘oppressed’ minority group (eg Maori, Sodomite, Lesbian, Female, Muslim, etc) there is little genuine tolerance and equality; and violence within society, not to mention escalating Islamic terrorism, is through the roof.

So yeah, some things are better, but some things are a HELL OF A LOT WORSE!!!

You’re dead bloody right, though. When you can damage someone’s personal property that they’ve worked hard for and possibly can’t afford to replace and get a fine you’ll never pay, but damage the roadside cash registers of the ruling elites and you’ll do time, our “justice” system stinks.

I’ve seen people hit with $300,000 “reparation” bills after they got sick of a speed camera and rammed it, while those who’ve done millions of dollars of damage to commercial property through arson are given a bit of PD. The police, the courts and the government sure look after one another’s interests.

Government and the Justice system is corrupt and broken. It is getting to the stage where there needs to be direct action from citizens groups to restore integrity.

The American people are slowly awakening to the fact that government is a fraud and a fake and a corrupt and despicable edifice and have started doing things for themselves.

Do you know the background to that video, Redbaiter?

It’s not the Black Panthers trying to “invade” some small town. Their leader, Quanell X, was trying to march to the home of a man called Joe Horn on December 2, 2007, in a suburban part of Houston, Texas. Horn had shot and killed two men, both Mexicans, who had broken into a neighbour’s house. Horn, against repeated requests of the 911 operator not to confront the burglars, did so. On the 911 tapes Horn exclaims, “Move, and you’re dead”, followed by three shotgun blasts.

Quanell X, who thought the shootings may have been racially motivated, approached Horn’s house to speak to the media. He was overwhelmed by several hundred counter-protesters protecting Horn from Quanell X’s accusations. Quanell X could not be heard over the noise, even when using a bullhorn.

In 1995, Quanell X was quoted in the New York Daily News as saying, “I say to Jewish America: Get ready … knuckle up, put your boots on, because we’re ready and the war is going down. … The real deal is this: Black youth do not want a relationship with the Jewish community or the mainstream white community or the foot shuffling, head-bowing, knee bobbing black community. … All you Jews can go straight to hell.”

So what you have there is a group of rednecks (one holding a sign saying “go home” directed at African Americans) protecting one of their own, under suspicion for a double murder in very dubious circumstances, from a group of racist black militants.

A part of me can’t help thinking the best outcome would have been if they were all locked in a giant cage somewhere and left to settle their differences. The outcome would raise the planet’s median IQ by several base points.

You liberals have to get out of the habit of insulting everyone who disagrees with you or you’ll have a lot more to complain about than these racist scum being run out of town without having a hair on their head harmed.

On second thoughts, its probably too late now anyway. You’ve been insulting people who disagree with you with this kind of rhetoric for decades now, and the backlash is finally underway, and I think its too late to stop it.

Not that I want to that much. It sadly seems like violence is the only way you’re ever going to understand how much you’re pissing people off.

..I have no problem with this…the burglars had a choice , they knew what they were doing was wrong but they still went ahead…Joe Horn was only protecting his property. Well done Joe.

Aside from it being bad manners it’s also pointless… starting off with an ad hominem attack on the commenter is hardly going to alter their opinion.

Your opinion comes as no surprise. I assume there’s no point in pointing out that the plain clothes police detective who was first on the scene, and who witnessed the escalation and shootings reported that the men who were killed “received gunfire from the rear”.

Or that the 911 tape also records Horn telling the operator “You want to make a bet? [that he might get killed] I’m going to kill them”.

If they were coming in to his house I’d accept he had every right to pull the trigger. But not while they were fleeing across his lawn and police were already on the scene (and it wasn’t even his house that had been burgled).

I am now of the opinion that Haden does not give a flying fuck if he is a rugby world cup ambassador or not, he is having far too much fun telling the truth about Canterbury rugby and the slappers who hang around All Blacks.

It would not surprise me if having had a meeting or two with the gutless PC National Government Haden has come to the conclusion that he does not want to associate with such a bunch of bed wetting hand wringers.

The only thing we have to do now is convince Haden to run for the super city mayoralty, imagine the fun that he would provide if he won, he would have the feminists, the Greens and all the PC wankers in a rage by the end of the first week,

40 charges -11 thefts, 10 unlawfully taking cars, and 13 charges of intentional damage, as well as the charge of conspiring to pervert the course of justice

Hayward was jailed for three years three months for similar offending – described by the judge as “commercial criminal dishonesty” – in December 2006 and was released on parole on April 28, 2009.
He will still on parole when the Christchurch ram-raids took place from September to November 2009.

What was the problem with the sentence?
