The issue of directors’ fees paid to councillors also attracted heated debate.

Anderton, who last week called for councillors to axe any fees they received, said “the ordinary person” did not like the practice of councillors being paid extra as directors.

Looks like Key needs to join Carter on stress leave. Becoming irrational just like Carter. Giving our beaches to IWI as opposed to KIWI and now he wants to work with Winston despite everything he said before the last election. No time to look it all up but one of you willing bring back the headlines please.

Key doesn’t rule out working with NZ First
Prime Minister John Key isn’t ruling out working with the New Zealand First Party.

The latest Roy Morgan poll put NZ First at 4.5 per cent, almost enough to get the party back into Parliament without any electorate seats.

Recent speculation was that Wanganui Mayor and radio host Michael Laws would stand for the party.

Mr Key said today he would decide whether he would work with NZ First leader Winston Peters closer to the election.

Mr Key ruled out forming a coalition or entering a support agreement with Mr Peters after the 2008 election.

Bullshit Viking – where does it say that Key wants to work with Winston? What he said was this:

“If he formally announces I’ll make a call on behalf of the National Party whether we want to countenance any potential relationship with NZ First.

“Winston might be saying he’s going to run, he might also change his mind. I’ve got a country to run and a lot of things to do and I’ll worry about that if that day ever comes.”

What he SHOULD do though is say that the only way he would deal with NZ First would be if Winston stands down as leader and retires …

Econophysics points way to fair salaries in free market

The excessive compensation packages of CEOs of U.S. corporations in recent years have brought to the foreground the issue of fairness in economics. The conventional wisdom is that the free market for labor, which determines the pay packages, cares only about efficiency and not fairness. We present an alternative theory that shows that an ideal free market environment also promotes fairness, as an emergent property resulting from the self-organizing market dynamics. Even though an individual employee may care only about his or her salary and no one else’s, the collective actions of all the employees, combined with the profit maximizing actions of all the companies, in a free market environment under budgetary constraints, lead towards a more fair allocation of wages, guided by Adam Smith’s invisible hand of self-organization. By exploring deep connections with statistical thermodynamics, we show that entropy is the appropriate measure of fairness in a free market environment which is maximized at equilibrium to yield the lognormal distribution of salaries as the fairest inequality of pay in an organization under ideal conditions.

To put a bit of perspective on how bad things are here, while everyone goes into a frenzy over a has been politician from a struggling party wallowing in dreams of past glory choosing to go on a taxpayer funded “rehab” – other countries relatively have minor issues to deal with, like the millions homeless and thousands dead in floods in Pakistan.

I think Key has the right approach to NZ First, at this stage he has no idea who or what he could be dealing with. Despite Peters it could become a viable party with a good range of MPs. On the other hand, Laws might join the list, Anderton may miss the mayoralty and join, Carter may be promised Foreign Affairs and join.

If NZ First resurrects and gets enough popular vote to be a viable player then any half decent PM should consider them for team selection.

If Light rail bankrupts Christchurch then they won’t be able to afford cars and will have to use bicycles, it is flat enough, and the problem will be solved .. of gridlock in the city centre. 🙂

Auckland City parking wardens will install new signs and markers on some bus lanes today – but drivers will be left guessing where they will be and even what they look like. The city council is refusing to say where on its 36km network of bus lanes it will put the signs, citing advice from a research company involved in a month-long trial that giving drivers advance notice could invalidate the exercise. Parking group manager Dale Clements said yesterday it was important for the trial to be rigorous, to help the council determine whether the extra signs changed driver behaviour. He had accepted advice from the research company that “undue prior publicity” about what the signs looked like would affect driver behaviour “and possible invalidate the trial”. Council transport committee chairman Ken Baguley acknowledged a likelihood that such secrecy would be hard to maintain for long, and that many drivers would indulge in a new sport of trying to spot the markers.

Asked how revealing the signs and their locations could threaten the trial, he said he had not been involved in designing it, but was bound to consider the advice of technical experts.

Let’s hope these are not the same “technical experts” who designed the current bus lanes. Fucking d’oh.

That doesn’t make sense. Your electorate vote won’t make any difference to the party mix. Shouldn’t you vote for the best candidate in your electorate? And cast your party vote for party preference?

To respond on yesterday’s GB, the sound recording was not verifiable and given that some police were investigated, others retired coincidentally around the same time, there is the possibility the suspects are innocent and the police through over-enthusiasm perhaps or in the rush to get a suspect, heard what they wanted to hear. Also, racism has been shown to be an institutional problem in police forces in the UK after all and this might bring to bear on the situation (these are possibilities, obviously I don’t know).

In response to your comment that a group of people seem to want to continue living in the middle ages, I see no relevance to the links you posted. These were Iranian people living in London. We have no idea about them and their lives. From what I have heard, Iran is an incredibly civilised and friendly place to visit. Gnerally, you and others here seem to group all muslims together when they come from vastly different countries, geographies and cultures from Morocco to Iran to Indonesia to Saudi Arabia — its simply not valid to make blanket statements about a group of people this large and disparate.

I agree there are people all around the world that have archaic views on things such as the rights of women etc. But this is by no means a problem for muslims alone, many religions and cultures have features that I find ridiculous and sometimes abhorrent. I find it sad also that many people place great judgements on others without complete knowledge or have political views that deny the essential humanity of all people. Now it is the muslims, but not so long ago it was acceptable to say all sorts of awful things about the jews. It is dangerous territory to judge an entire group of people and to project on to them negative attributes based on selective accounts by people that are motivated by hate. Don’t believe everything you come across on the internet.

Asked yesterday what had changed since then, Mr Key said: “Nothing”.

“I have a lot of things to worry about, Winston Peters ain’t one of them.”

Last week’s Roy Morgan poll put NZ First’s support at 4.5 per cent, not far off the 5 per cent that would give it seats in Parliament if it translated into votes at the election.

Reporting Palmer’s appointment to chair the Gaza flotilla inquiry, Radio NZ at noon got comments from the NZ Prime Minister – and “Green MP Keith Locke”.

Locke is in the MSM every second day. If it ain’t bribery, it’s strong bias.

It’s ironical to watch a 30ish female reporter on TTVNZ (Tabloid Television NZ) TV1 getting stuck into dairy farmers for aborting calves, and scarcely acknowledging that if carried to birth most would be slaughtered any way.

Calves before humans. When did TTVNZ care a stuff about the tens of thousands of human babies aborted in a national policy of open-slather abortion as an option to contraception?

TTVNZ has well and truly swallowed the lines of the animal rights fanatics. This movement has bombed research centres overseas and bitterly opposes use of mice and other animals in research that may reduce human suffering. The movement’s fanatics would sink NZ’s economy, based as it is on livestock farming.

Am I the only one who shrugs at the decline of this taxpayer funded and subsidised news service? It was bad enough having North American news dumbed down for us nightly by Dim Wilson, the world master of sound bites – two at a time, so that you sometimes wonder whether he’s in an asthma attack.

Key opens up about Carter:

Key: Carter should provide doctor’s certificate

“Here’s Chris Carter, he has told the truth about his leader and now he’s in the sick bin for two months,” Mr Key said.

Mr Key’s Government wants to introduce new legislation that would enable employers to require a certificate from a doctor within three days of an employee taking one sick day.

Mr Key said it might be a good idea to apply the proposed law to Mr Carter.

“He didn’t look very sick to me last week, he looked fairly exercised about the fact that he didn’t think Phil Goff could win an election.”

Mr Key said Mr Carter would have to tell the public he was genuinely sick.

It felt like an excuse, Mr Key said.

The Labour Party seemed to be having difficulty expelling him and had found a way around that, he said.

That’s telling it like it is.

And Goff tells it like it isn’t.

“Labour leader Phil Goff says Chris Carter is not his problem any more and the caucus is moving on.

He disputes that the two months’ leave Mr Carter wants to take mean a ongoing cloud will hang over his leadership and says the issue is now behind him and he has his caucus’ support.”

Solar blast to light up NZ skies tonight

The New Zealand sky could be lit up by the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, tonight after American space agency Nasa detected a solar blast heading towards earth.

But it sounds like Wednesday night is going to be a better bet.

“This eruption is directed right at us and is expected to get here early in the day on Aug. 4th,” said Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. “It’s the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time.”

A blast of violent space weather could hit the Earth tomorrow following two massive explosions on the Sun. NASA astronomers witnessed a huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of our planet and linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.

By chance, the explosions were aligned towards Earth, sending a solar tsunami racing millions of miles across space.

Experts estimate a wave of supercharged gas called plasma will reach us this Tuesday when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth. It could trigger spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.

The sun has been unusually quiet and overdue for more activity that could peak in the next few years.
