3% mortgages in the US have not proven to be such a good idea. House building has been grossly overstimulated.
Re the beatup of Mediaworks having fees deferred (at penal rates) does Maori Radio pay for its use of the airwaves? National radio gets free use.

i reckon if large parts of christchurch are going to be replanned, they need to look past boring NZ architecture.

Jeez, NZ must have the most boring buildings in the world with little originality. Australia is not much better either.

They need to get some talented artists, and architects to bang their heads together and make some amazing plans.

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier.

Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day.

The husband checked into the hotel. When he connected his laptop computer he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the e-mail.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston , a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a Protestant minister who had suffered a heart attack.

The widow decided to check her e-mail expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted.

The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived

I know you’re surprised to hear from me. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. They have Internet connection here and I decided to send you an email.

I’ve seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

P. S. Sure is freaking hot down here!!!!

Ring didn’t predict that one bereal, nor the two yesterday in Japan. He doesn’t predict where an earthquake will occur anyway, he has no idea.

His latest fudging seems to be pulling back from his dire predictions and trying to blame the media for the scaremongering.

Most places will not be affected around 19-21 March and again 17-18 April. But some undoubtedly may be.

… on the whole, most of us will carry on as normal because there is a strong likelihood that nothing will happen.

Can someone tell me what the population of Napier was before and after the earthquake of 1931?

I wonder how many new houses are actually required in Christchurch when so many people have left the city. If a quarter of the 70,000 that left Christchurch never return, then the number of new houses required won’t be anywhere 10,000 as reported.

Prince William to visit Christchurch.

What bloody good will William’s visit achieve?

He’s not a god or a magician so IMHO there will be no useful result in his visit.

And the last thing the people of Christchurch need is a patronising nonsence ceremony so soon after the quake.

If he comes with a shovel it might be OK.

Would you care to put forward some argument(s) in support of your view, as Thinker was prepared to do? What practical use will the Prince be to Christchurch?

If he were to bring (from the royal family’s collective fortunes) a sizable donation to assist Christchurch’s physical rehabilitation, say a sum to match the $4 million donation from his generous British compatriot, then he would deserve a very warm and gracious welcome. In the absence of tangible assistance, however, he will be just another shallow disaster tourist.

Worse still, I imagine that New Zealand taxpayers (i.e. the serfs) will be meeting all costs associated with their Liege’s visit.

The Prince’s visit will help keep Christchurch in the news and to the forefront of peoples thinking. This may or may not keep money coming. He talks to other people of influence who may be able to help.

Last and not least ,as a future King of New Zealand is it not right that he shows an interest?

On top of this mornings 6.6 earthquake in NewGuinea there has just been a 5.4 magnitude quake
on the Myanmar/China border. i dont know how unusual this amount of earthquakes is, there were two
in Japan yesterday as Pete George reports.
Ken Ring pointed out that the perigee (or epigee, not sure which term is correct) but the moon is closest
to the earth on the 20th of this month.
Once again, i hope he is wrong about Christchurch.

bereal – it’s over a week until the 20th, so the orbit of the moon is at its most moderate point, and least likely to cause problems. According to the theory it’s going to have its biggest effect at the extremes (ie epigee and perigee) and least when in between.

Oil producers will be “begging” people to buy their oil in 10 years time as new technologies and fuels are developed, says a prominent oil focused economist.

Speaking in Wellington at Greenstone Energy co-owner Infratil’s annual investor day, Philip Verleger, Professor of Strategy and International Management at the University of Calgary, said while in Wellington he had been asked by Treasury officials where the price of oil would be in 10 years time.

“I said I thought oil producers would be begging to sell their oil,” said Verleger who has previously held positions at the US President’s Council of Economic Advisers, the US Treasury, the Institute for International Economics, Yale University, the University of California, and the National Petroleum Council.

“The reason I think this is the case is that technology is so good,” Verleger added.

Then we should ask if we should be building CHCH again. Estimates are now getting into more real territory and will supress NZ’s wealth for 20 years.

Christchurch earthquake rebuild could cost $30b

Christchurch could become the headquarters of New Zealand’s construction industry for the next decade, with predictions that rebuilding the city could cost $30 billion.

Fletchers infrastructure chief executive Mark Binns said staff and money from all over New Zealand would be redirected towards Christchurch over the next decade.

Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said estimates of $20b to fix Christchurch were “very light” and could easily reach $30b.

The opposition didn’t think it was right but voted for the legislation. Oh because it gave workers a holiday
and
The complete bunch of dick heads have just imposed by law another cost on private businesses and the taxpayer at a time when both are reeling from the earthquake event.
Absolutely appalling behavoir. No wonder Kiwi businesses move offshore for their production requirements. If people needed a day off then they can do that themselves.

A law change to grant Cantabrians a one-off paid public holiday on March 18 has been rushed through all its stages in Parliament with cross-party support.

However, Opposition MPs questioned if the commemoration was being held too early, given that the names of all the dead were not yet known.

What about building owners and building users? It shouldn’t have to be up to the government (or local councils) to force safety on everyone.

Should all buildings in quake prone areas that aren’t up to modern standards be red stickered until they comply? How much is every business prepared to pay? How much is every home owner prepared to pay?
