ABC Australia interviewed a nuke specialist scince type dude. Apparently it took them a while to find one because people kept trying to get them to talk to their specialist political agenda talking guy.

The actual expert said rad levels low and dropping, whats the fuss? But of course we was clearly a plant by the right wing military industrial machine and people are growing thrid arms as we speak.

Course next year the a guppy that was exposed to radition will be coming back as Godzilla.

Oh yeah and like 10,000 plus people are dead but thats not on the agenda today. Saying nuke to a leftie is like saying witch to a Spanish Inquistor. The reation is the same and with about as much sense.

A regular mistake Redbaiter makes is assuming EVERONE who has a contrary opinion to him is an extreme left wing nut job. I suggest you don’t go down that path either.
Also to strengthen your argument that the reaction to the Nuclear crisis is ridiculous and a media beat up by using patently ridiculous statements about Godzilla and third arms paints your argument as invalid and not able to be argued with logic.

Now I concede that this can be argued logically and some people have brought up some valid points on the scope of the Nuclear disaster (I assume we actually agree it is a disaster?) and that to focus on this compared to the huge loss of life and devastation of the quake and resultant Tsunami is disproportionate.

Some people such as I have felt is necessary to point out there is more to the story than some people are asserting, Further to use the background of this Nuclear disaster (level 6 emergency seems like a disaster to me) to argue for Nuclear power in NZ while this is still unfolding and then to denounce those whom question this wisdom as fools manipulated by the media and the extreme left does appear at best to be conceited.

I would hazard a guess that this tactic was not in the original plans.

And this tells me that the situation is by no means under control. In fact, the nuclear scientists have been playing catchup since the earthquake.

You are also dealing with a country still traumatised by the only ever use of nuclear weapons in war. While they were negotiating surrender terms.

Now Germany has shut down half their nuclear plants, the older ones, while they have a think. Are they being hysterical?

Or thoughtful?

Another very good article from Karl du Fresne. Calling a spade a spade.

A Radio New Zealand listener emailed Morning Report last week complaining that all prime minister John Key had talked about since the Christchurch earthquake was the economy. Nothing about social welfare.

In fact the government and the social welfare system moved very swiftly to ensure that support was in place for those affected by the quake. But that’s largely beside the point, because there’s a much bigger issue here.

The Morning Report listener’s complaint reflected a widespread misapprehension that government is all about redistributing wealth – hardly surprising, given that this was Labour’s main preoccupation when it was in power.

But a much more important function of government is to create an economic environment in which wealth can be created in the first place. You can’t have a Rolls-Royce social welfare system without a prosperous economy generating revenue and taxes to pay for it.

This is the key fact that so often escapes the Left. They want to redistribute wealth without giving too much thought to the inconvenient business of creating it first. Even worse, they seek to penalise the wealth creators.

This is precisely the reason the Clark years were a tragic missed opportunity. The government was so focused on punishing “rich pricks” – in Michael Cullen’s famous words – that it sucked money out of the productive sector and frittered it on middle-class welfare, interest-free student loans, no-questions-asked dole schemes for anyone who fancied themselves as “artists” (one pop band boasted that it kept them in dope) and other follies.

The crucial issue in election year is whether New Zealand can be freed from the ideological grip of ageing baby-boomer socialists who think the measure of a country’s success is the number of people dependent on the state. Are Mr Key and the National Party up to the challenge? I can’t say I’m brimming with confidence.

When is the ultimate bureaucrat Hamilton of Civil Defence in CHCH going to be stood down for incompetence..when is he going on fatigue leave or whatever it is he needs??
We do not need the tyrany or ”the nameless and faceless” in CHCH at this point. What he is overseeing in the name of haste is outrageous. What he is not taking responsibility for is outrageous. I never thought he was the brightest and now everyday he is proving me right.
Who are Southern Demolition? Who are Ward demolition? Why are business owners not even being spoken to before their buildings are being demolished? Why are two demo companies being sent to the same job? Who are these out of town cowboys? Are they paying kickbacks to officials?

Official: Japan’s nuclear situation nearing severity of Chernobyl

The explosion Tuesday at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has elevated the situation there to a “serious accident” on a level just below Chernobyl, a French nuclear official said, referring to an international scale that rates the severity of such incidents.

“It’s clear we are at Level 6, that’s to say we’re at a level in between what happened at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl,” Andre-Claude Lacoste, president of France’s nuclear safety authority, told reporters Tuesday.

They should be bloody concerned by three explosions and a fire, it’s not a great average, especially as there is plenty of room for further deterioration.

Ah, refer to the next topic. DPF is getting hysterical too.

How much have you read about the science as opposed to the hysteria?

The plant design is based on defence in depth and the critical barriers have not been penetrated. The reactor building that exploded was there only to keep out the weather, not to keep anything in. The reactor vessel which is the critical part has not been penetrated and the plant successfully shut down as designed when the earthquake, which was magnitudes over the designed limit, hit. The issue is the cooling of the fuel rods. The mains electricity shut down caused the diesel generators to kick in, however they were flooded when the tsunamai hit and the cooling switched to battery power which lasted for seven hours. Meanwhile other generators were bought to the site and are now operating. The explosions were caused by the venting of various gases amongst which is hydrogen to relieve pressure buildup and such venting is a standard part of such an event, which BTW is something all operators practice constantly.

The core by now has been shut down for several days now and there is no repeat no danger of meltdown because the reactor vessel has not repeat not been damaged and furthermore it is specifically designed to contain the rods even if they do go into meltdown. The China syndrome was a movie Luc. There is a difference between that and the real world.

The issue they’re dealing with through the helicopters dumping water in is to replace water in the pool that contains the spent fuel rods which were stupidly, stored about the reactor vessel. when the reactor building expoded this has exposed them to the air and if the water evaporates there will be trouble, however that can be dealt with in a number of ways. Note that spent fuel rods are NOT the ones in the reactor vessel.

The fact is the rods in the vessel themselves are fine, and will be fine. The only issue is the spent fuel rods, and hysterical media reports whipping up paranoid fervour amongst millions of ignorant useful idiots around the world.

Are you aware of the trend of escalation of this crisis?

Like I said, humans are playing catch up. I don’t believe it will ever go close to Chernobyl, but significant numbers of people will suffer, long term, it it does get any worse.

Personally, if I was there, I would take my wife and daughter as far away from there as I could, preferably all the way back to NZ.

Funnily enough, two places we were looking seriously for ex-pat work three years ago was Bahrein and Japan.

Phew!

So reid, are you happy to join Hurf and camp outside the gates of the plant?

Foreshore bill sparks Harawira backlash

The return to Parliament of the new foreshore and seabed bill has reignited the acrimony between independent Maori MP Hone Harawira and his party.

Debate on the Marine and Coastal Area Bill is expected to drag out over at least two days as its opponents seek to delay its final reading until next week to give time for a protest hikoi which left Northland yesterday to reach Parliament.

Yesterday, Attorney General Chris Finlayson was dismissive of the hikoi, which numbers about 100 people – far short of the 20,000 who marched to Parliament in 2004. “I think there are about five or 10 who have left Kaitaia, whether it gathers momentum as they march through the towns, we will wait and see.”

He said the speed with which the bill passed would depend how much Labour “filibustered” to delay the bill.

Another Asian country that should be told to get lost.

The Philippines government wants extra compensation for the families of its citizens killed in the Christchurch earthquake if inquiries find the Canterbury TV building was not up to scratch.

All 11 Philippines nationals killed in the magnitude 6.3 quake were studying at the King’s English language school in the ill-fated Canterbury TV building when it collapsed and caught fire.

The Philippines government’s first priority was repatriation but if a Royal Commission of Inquiry found liability then the families would demand compensation from those responsible, Philippines Embassy charge d’affaires Giovanni Palec told NZPA.

“The students come here to have a better chance of employment and families have invested a lot of money for them. Some were working and sending income to their families,” Mr Palec said.

Many commenters here feel they are morally and interlectually superior to everyone else and like to tell others what to do under the disguise of “advice”. Your tail lights are disappearing down that road.

Couple returning home shot at by intruders

An elderly woman sought cover as she was shot at by burglars shortly after arriving home from holiday.
Lorena Oldham and her husband John arrived home to find a car parked in their driveway at their Glen Massey home, about 27km northwest of Hamilton.

The couple initially thought the car belonged to their house-sitter and thought little of it.

But Huntly police said they did not know they had disturbed three men who had been loading up the car with their belongings. Police say a firearm from the house was used to shoot at the couple. The burglars then left the scene and raced towards Huntly.

The trio were eventually arrested after throwing stolen property out the window as police chased them.

Stanton Hapeta Edmonds, 26, Joseph Tamati Turner, 33 and Mace Topia Whalley, 25, appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday where they jointly faced one charge each of attempting to murder Mrs Oldham.

Ostensibly , it is a good cause..and I thank you on behalf of other CHCh people..but if the demo cowboys are not reined in there won’t be anything much left of the CBD…
A friend of mine lives in the Port Hills area..she was very ticked off about all the fuss over the Eastern Suburbs..This whole thing was very politicised by left leaning activitists..They had a bit of sand but homes , walls etc were wrecked in the hill suburbs and they hardly got a wide angled view. There is also the issue of the Reservoir which lost all its water on Huntsbury hill. The aftershocks are really scarey in these hill suburbs and residents fear what is going to happen in the next big rain. Just a day or so ago , Rachel Smalley TV 3 said the CBD and the Eastern suburbs were the main areas of damage..Amazing how things can take on a life of their own on the telly. If I lived up in those hill suburbs I would feel aggrieved too. More and more people have been allowed to build in these areas in recent years.

The situation in the Nuclear plant is critical, the Japanese govt is playing down the seriousness of the accident which has already exceeded the Chernobyl accident by a factor of 2 ( 3 meltdowns as oppossed to one).
The tsunami on friday wiped out the integrated cooling systems as well as destroying the water treatment facilities, and what we are witnessing is a catastrophic failure that is unprecendented.

Another slight difference Dave – the worst of the tsunami is over, it’s now basically counting up and cleaning up. The worst of the increasing number of serious reactor problems may be yet to come – and could possible linger for years, or generations.

And another – a lot will be learnt from the tsunami, but it is just a matter of knowing how to improve early warning, evacuation procedures, and cross your fingers.

Justified or not the repercussions of the possible risks of nuclear power could impact significantly, even severely, on future power production.

As far as the Tsunami warnings in, almost nothing can protect you from am almighty fucking wall of water 2000kms long crashing down at you faster than you could drive away from it on a dead flat road mate.

Kevin you’re being hysterical.

Where is the evidence there has been a meltdown: i.e. the fuel rods in the reactor vessel have melted into a gloopy mass?

Hint: There isn’t any evidence.

What has happened in case you didn’t know, is that all three reactors shut down as designed, immediately after the quake. There is residual heat which is causing the current issues but there is no evidence any of the reactor vessels have failed and so far they are performing as designed.

At Chernobyl there was no similar protection in the form of the 17 inch thick stainless steel reactor vessel designed to withstand the extreme heat of a meltdown so when the building blew apart there it released all the radiation. You can’t compare the design of Chernobyl to the design of Fukushima unless you’re an idiot or a hysterical schoolgirl.

Incidentally, Tauranga/Mt Maunganui still does not have a working Tsunami alarm.

They do have some sirens , but most people couldn’t hear them when they tested it.

I think it’s disgusting that authorities can’t get something – they are citing that it is too expensive to build a mobile notification system.

I wonder, if they’d think it were too expensive after the event? And, it will happen at some time in the future.

@wreck1080. The Mount Papamoa area has no sirens, apprently they were removed and people now have to rely on electronic notification (if they sign up for it I suppose).
Still only 3 ways out of that area of coast.
In the event of a tsunami, God knows what the consequences would be , I shudder to think.
It appears that the council and local civil defence have slotted this little issue into the too hard basket.

This is disgraceful. For all of John Keys blathering about wanting to encourage investment etc, we are still one of the worst countries in the world in which to put money into managed funds.

This country will always be on the backburner until we give tax incentives for investing.

Did you know, that , if you own shares worth 1million, then, you lose 100k , and gain 100k the year after, you will be back to 1 million – yet, you will have paid tax of approx 15,000 even though you made no money at all.

The rules are complex though, you need a whole year to learn how it works.

This is disgraceful. For all of John Keys blathering about wanting to encourage investment etc, we are still one of the worst countries in the world in which to put money into managed funds.

Yep and Gareth Morgan was ranting the last few days about housing losing value. Obviously not as much as funds and shares and guess what is going to be in demand in the next few years. Shares, funds. Yeh Right.
Never seen a share portfolio that gives shelter and have yet to see any fund that is not at the mercy of anyone but shylocks and charlatans and money manipulators.

PM’s chief scientist hits out at quake forecasters

Nobody can predict when an earthquake will strike, the Prime Minister’s chief science adviser says.

The Government and the Royal Society of New Zealand today released a scientific paper at a briefing in Wellington, looking at earthquake predictions and future earthquake risks for Christchurch and New Zealand.

During the briefing, Sir Peter Gluckman hit out at Ken Ring’s controversial prediction that another big quake will hit Christchurch on or near March 20.

Gaddafi will dish out plenty of demerit points when he eventually takes Bengazhi.

Lovely story about Mumamars favorite mayor of Bengazhi when she ran out of
the crowd to cling onto the legs of of one of his opponents to show her support
as he was being hanged when she was a 20 year old looking for a career.

“ACT MP Hilary Calvert has been labelled a racist, over a speech she made in Parliament last night.

During debate on the marine and coastal bill she called tikanga – or Maori customs – an “Alice in Wonderland world”.

She also said Maori couldn’t prove customary title to the seabed.

“No one historically crawled about on the seabed, miles from shore,” she said.

“There was just no chance of anybody holding their breath from 1840 until now on the seabed – that’s not going to happen.”

In Parliament yesterday, during debates on The Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill, Ms Calvert was disparaging about how the legislation had to take into account Maori rights.

“Tikanga is an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ word. It means whatever the Queen – I think it was the Red or White Queen – said it would mean, no more and no less.”

Under the bill tikanga covered inherited rights and interests, she said.

“So we are to believe that this Alice in Wonderland word, a word that can be defined by the person claiming some property in our coastal land, creates legal rights based entirely on the say-so of the claimant. We might just as well ask iwi for a list of what they want and put through a legal transfer.”

Later in the evening she questioned Maori rights to relating to the seabed saying it was questionable that historical use any distance from shore happened.

Who promoted the codger to this positon? Amazing restraint being shown by CHCh business owners..Where do these demo cowboys come from? Who is currently in charge of USAR?
Where is Brownlee?? MIA as per usual.
Hopefully the next victim won’t be one of these very restrained CHCH types and Hamilton wears it.
