Hmm, Tizard wasn’t exactly giving Goff her unqualified support in that Herald article.

Oh dear, she holds Helen in more stead than Goff, the Labour leader.

Looks like Goff needs Andrew Little in his Party president capacity to put Tizard in her place, for she will have no loyalty if she does come back.

(The arrogance of Tizard is also astounding in that article)!

Discussion on Sunday with Chris Laidlaw re the awarding of aboriginal title to aboriginals. It seems 100,000 people own 33% of the Australian continent. This is very remote land with high conservation value.
Note Labour, The Greens and Maori Party are opposed to making continuous use since 1840 the rule for gaining customary title.
It would be interesting what would pan out in a country like New Zealand where Europeans have had a close connection since 1840.

Meanwhile, former Labour MP Judith Tizard said last night she may take at least a week to decide if she wants to return to Parliament.

For gawds sake, why on earth would it take “at least” one week to make a decision?

I can picture Tizard sitting on her arse for a week doing absolutley nothing, whilst the NY Branch of the Labour Party are on the phones and texting Labour MP’s in Wellington in all that time, working on numbers and scenarios to see how many of their sycophants can form a powerful block to push their agenda.

Poor Phil, whilst he states there is no leadership challenge, all around him the BBQ’s are being fired up (but he’s not getting an invite).

Normally when Labour have a good old fashioned blood letting, back-stabbing back room coup, the new leader is an obvious choice with wide spread public support. It seems this time everyone wants a coup, but there is no leader in waiting, no one wants the job, and the only thing they do want is to be rid of Goff.

“Former Labour Darren Hughes has been the subject of allegations about another late-night incident after a boozy evening out.

The Herald on Sunday has learned of claims about Hughes and a worker from a party leader’s office who were in a group drinking at a 2009 Christmas party.

The staffer is understood to have been asked by Hughes to carry on drinking, and was then the subject of a sexual approach. The young man objected and left.

The party leader quizzed the young man to see if he wanted to make a formal complaint. He declined, saying the incident was a misguided “pass”.

Hughes’ political career ended on Friday.

It looks like The Greens butchered an unlosable position in two seats, by being caught out lying multiple times over their position on an Israel boycott (which they tried to pretend they didn’t push).

Even Labour analysts are saying that if they want to be serious as politicians then they have to field serious candidates, not extremists.

Tim if those Greens are anything at all like our Greens then I suspect their problem is they can’t find anyone in their entire party who isn’t an extremist.

It’s very sad, isn’t it. Too bad about 5-7 of our total adult population is just as mental as they are. FFS. Can’t we treat this, somehow? You’d think by now someone somewhere in the world would have found a cure to this living horror.

You ask a good question nasska. I have wondered too. My image of her knitting in the chamber during debate is what I have, and to that extent she does personify lazy and ineffective but you’re right, others used to do as well during the period in which this belief arose, so why is it attached just to her? It’s one of those wide-spread beliefs that while wide-spread you can’t really put your finger on from whence and when it arose and for why it has taken such hold. At least I can’t.

He’s quite right though bereal. Hughes’ homosexuality was not a political liability until he made it one himself by denying it for years and years.

The people who mentored him over the years have badly let him down, over this. Of course he got himself into this mess by inviting a straight 18 year old back to his flat. Why would a gay 34 year old do that, unless it was to have sex with him. If Hughes didn’t know this young man was in fact straight, then all he had to do was ask. Personally however, I’ve almost always been able accurately to detect a male’s sexuality, it’s just one of those instinct things one has. I assume other people can do the same thing and while one can be wrong, it doesn’t happen often, not that I normally make it a point of asking. Metro-sexuals are devishly hard to detect sometimes, I might add. Not that I care, either way. It’s just if one has those instincts then how come Darren’s let him down. The young man has a gf as per media reports, normally that means he’s straight.

So I think Darren is being disingenuous if he doesn’t take full responsibility for that appalling lack of good judgement on the part of a 34 year old in his position. I also think he was let down from a young age, for he should have managed it inside his first term in parliament but no-one told him how to do it.

reid, i think you are cutting Darren a bit too much slack here.
How can it be the resonsibility of his ‘mentors ‘ to advise him on sexual matters.
i see in todays Herald he is quoted as saying, “I’m not gay.” Were his mentors expected
to tell him not to be so stupid, of course your gay ?
What we have here is a case of a young, naive, unwordly youth, flattered that one of his
idols was giving him so much attention, had too much to drink, awoke from a drunken sleep
to find, as a previous correspondent described, “a sweating ginga, half up him.”
The kids wordly education was vastly enhanced at that point.
This was nothing to do with a failure on behalf of Darrens mentors.
i don’t know but i always assumed that homosexuals had some sort of built in radar so they
could recognise each other. (kind of like Masons)
Personally i cant always tell if a given guy is gay or not and have been suprised in the past,
although not as surprised as this kid would have been.
Alcohol, presumably upset Darrens radar, for the second time at least that we know about.
You cant blame his mentors for his failure to learn from past experiences.

Labour deservedly cop a lot of flak for their determination that we must all be made to behave in the ways liberal hand-wringers think are appropriate, but it’s often overlooked that National have the same tendencies, with the liberal handwringers swapped out for stodgy, church-going stuffed shirts.

Then there’s National’s contribution. The National Party seems to hold a lot of attraction for conservative stuffed shirts who’d like to see conservative stuffed-shirtdom enforced by law – witness most of their MPS. Said stuffed shirts have taken the opportunity to appoint like-minded individuals to the Broadcasting Standards Authority, with predictably stupid results:

‘La Tizard’ is unwelcome because of her extremely close associations with DL, and because she was ‘posted’ to Auckland as ‘Minister Responsible for Auckland-issues’ after her ‘friendship’ with DL soured. She was not a good MP, being more of the ‘Good time, Party Girl’ mould than a serious ‘Polly’, It was generally understood at the time she was elected, that her election owed more to the fact that her father (Bob Tizard) had been an MP in the electorate she was standing for, and was voted in because it was his old seat and in the nature of ‘loyalty to Bob’ than because of her abilities. What didn’t help is that she was ‘posted’ to Auckland by DL to create a mysteriously-created new position (which had not been previously required) and it was seen by many to be a way of getting her ‘out of the way’, and ‘rewarding her to stay away’. As ‘Minister for Auckland’ she was ‘uninspiring’ and seemed more interested in ‘social activities’ than in serious work. Certainly, Auckland was never well represented by her and many Aucklanders really wondered exactly what it was she was supposed to be doing – or why she was even there..

Her ‘inability to work’, closeness to DL, and a tendency to ‘throw her weight around’ in the secure knowledge that she had DL’s support, while having an access to the ‘higher levels of power’ than her position in the parliamentary ‘pecking order’ would have otherwise permitted, did not exactly endear her to other Labour parliamentary members or their staff, and I understand that a collective ‘sigh of relief’ created her departure. She was not exactly missed . . .

To have this ‘remnant from the past’ re-appear, (with all its associations and connotations visa-vis DL), is not, understandably, something which fills many Labour parliamentary staff or MP’s with any joy, especially when DL is still exercising long-distance control from New York. In analogy, it would be somewhat equivalent to having a fox-cub in drag (oops, unintentional pun) living inside the ‘hen house’, watching all the ‘hens’ and letting the ‘Head Fox’ know which chicken is the best one for ‘lunch’. It would give DL direct access to the corridors of power within the NZ Labour party, and a chance to ‘manipulate’ things to her advantage – something that Phil Goff is very, very aware of, and can do without – especially at the moment. The fact that “The Tizard’ is ‘biding her time’ before ‘making a choice’ about whether or not to return, is indicative that she is aware of her ‘Power’ and that she is backed by DL, and I would doubt that it is ‘accidental’. Rather, it is probably the equivalent of ‘playing a fish’, tiring it out before landing it. It is being done very delibrately and with a high degree of malicious enjoyment as she watches Phil ‘squirm’ – after all, there are so many ‘scores’ to settle, so why not ‘prolong the enjoyment’ for as long as possible. Casual observation suggests that this is entirely in keeping with the way that Labour operate and have don so for years. Socialists (who have a well-developed sense of ‘agrievement’) have long memories – and longer knives. . .

Hope this helps explain the ‘aversion’ to ‘La Tizard’s’ return.

It will be interesting to see what develops.

Probably fair comment, i guess there is a significant element of the, ‘white coat, I know best
what is good for you’ brigade in all parties. The type that will brown nose and crawl their way
untill eventually they reach a position where they feel they have some power.
However on a personal note, i think i would prefer the ‘stuffed shirt’ over the ‘shirt lifter.’

Recent current events remind be of the old story about the young bloke who unknowingly
wanders into a gay bar and orders a rum and coke. One of the gays slips a Mickey Finn
into his drink and when he passes out a couple of them have their way with him. He comes round and stumbles out.
Next night he’s back, orders another rum and coke and the same thing happens.
Third night he’s back in the same bar, the barman says, ‘ The usual son ?”
And the young bloke says, “No thanks, I think I’ll have a Steinlager, those rum
and cokes make my arse too sore.”

Council denies access to papers on Maori board

Auckland Council is refusing to release background papers to a multimillion-dollar funding package for the unelected Maori Statutory Board.

Council officers are citing an upcoming fight in the High Court and commercial sensitivity as reasons for withholding the information from ratepayers, whose money is paying for the board and the legal costs.

Last month, Auckland Mayor Len Brown and finance committee councillors approved a $3.4 million annual budget to run the board. After a public uproar, a full council meeting cut the budget to an indicative $1.9 million.

The board is asking the High Court to reinstate its $3.4 million budget. Depending on the outcome, the unelected nine-member board – set up by the Government as an alternative to Maori seats – will cost Auckland ratepayers between $4.7 million and $8.9 million this council term.

Yes not to mention the incompetent right who let this debacle happen in the first place and luckily, the right is the home of personal responsibility so Rodney, please take a bow, as does Finlayson, for not spotting it and advising accordingly. Given what Finlayson is rumoured to have done in the FSB bill, perhaps he did spot it but just decided not to say anything about it, which if true, is disgraceful for he’s sabotaged what is actually a bloody good thing, in terms of the SuperCity as a concept.

very astute account. Isn’t it sickening that this drone was elevated to a ministerial
place at the trough for reasons close to being described as nepotism. Is Labour the
only party in New Zealand where such a travesty could occur.. Yes.
This is one very nasty, vindictive, shallow, piece of work.
Next thing you know, if Labour ever make the Govt again this POS will likely
join Jonathon Hunt at the highest table .
Dont laugh, if Hunt can make it these mongrels can award it to anybody.

There is one aspect about the Tizard ‘saga’ which seems to have been overlooked, or put into the ‘It will never happen’ category, namely the very distinct likelihood that DL will return to New Zealand once her term at the UN is over and resume her leadership of the New Zealand Labour Party.

I understand that tenure of a senior UN post is not a lifelong sinecure, with the result that sometime in the future, DL will be stepping aside in favour of someone else. Whether she will be further elevated or not I cannot say (although I have heard that her ultimate goal is to be UN Secretary General and no, we won’t go there at the moment – the possibilities are interesting). The ‘promotion’ will depend on the ‘shadows’ that we have discussed before (but which I do not intend to talk about in this post). Eithr way, at some point she will be ‘free’ from the UN associations.

She is currently 60 years of age, so is no where near retirement age, so what does such a person do when they are out of a job and have been used to being in positions of power/control?

Easy – return to what you know, and take up where you left off. . .

And what does Helen Elizabeth Clark know? Put simply, Politics and the Political World (like a lot of her contemporaries – including P. Goff, she has never had a ‘real’ job AFAIK)

So. . .

This is of course hypothesis on my part, but I advance it as an ‘educated’ hypothesis for consideration, as it would explain the ‘Labour Party in New York’ situation and the return of ‘La Tizard’ to the fold.

It may not happen, but then again . . .

As I said, a hypothesis, make of it what you will. . .

I wonder if some of Labour’s more generous donors are being hit up for a few favours right now?

Labour want quite a few people to stand aside so they can get the highly unpopular Louisa Wall back into the house, given that those in front of her are not exactly dynamos it would be difficult to expect them to overlook the money on offer.

Unless of course…….some private deals are made????

Steyn on the ludicrous Earth Hour:

Very fittingly, if coincidentally, all this took place just about time the ecochondriacs were supposed to be marking “Earth Hour”. So was this London’s all-time greatest “Earth Hour” or what? Massive disruption of commercial activity (doubtless heartening to the famously anti-consumerist eco-Prince of Wales) and normally glittering storefronts darkened except for the reflected glow of burning garbage.

If Earth Hour is indeed a celebration of “ignorance, poverty and backwardness“, then all three made great strides in London today.
