I can understand why Muslims are so highly motivated to carry out terrorist attacks, they are promised 72 virgins when they go to heaven. A fine reward, I’m sure we’ll all agree.
But for those virgins… heaven isn’t exactly what they expected is it?

Karl Marx said the benefit always flows to the owner in the end. And that led to a few revolutions etc
I agree with old Karl’s view. But it leads me instead to think being an owner is the best option.
Lupa of Brazil (nominally socialist) said “We were a capitalist county, but we had no capital” Mmmmmh. Sounds familiar to here.
Brian Gaynor the other day outlined very cogently that NZers do not hang on to ownership of their assets and companies. And essentially we shooting are ourselves in the foot. Still !
It seems to me. 1. We better stop borrowing. 2. We need to retain control. 3. We need to get into the black and be owners on our own country and not tenants.

We see and hear Solicitor General David Collins say there is insufficient evidence for charges under the Terrorism Suppression Act and instruct the news media to take care in reporting the case. We do not hear him complain that the incoherent drafting of the law made it difficult for him to approve charges, or say “I wish also to stress that the police have successfully brought to an end what were very disturbing activities,” and pay tribute to their “professionalism and integrity”. These things are literally edited out of his statement.
This matters, because Collins is presented as almost the only honest broker in the Establishment. Wright quoted him approvingly in the Q&A session after last night’s screening in Auckland, telling the audience Collins had declared the charges “a load of crap”. Collins simply did not say that, even in lawyer-language.”

Bought my son an iPAD, my daughter an iPOD. The wife got me an iPHONE and I got her an iRON. She wasn’t overly impressed even after I explained it can be integrated with the iWASH, iCOOK, and iCLEAN network. This opened the iNAG reminder service, which totally wiped out the iSHAG function….

I’m sure we all share your concerns, but your recipe would do mare harm than good.

Firstly, an austerity budget aimed at drastically reducing govt borrowing would plunge us further into recession. Of course, this is what has been forced upon Greece and Spain, and the pain is becoming plain. Ireland and the UK is beginning the same course of treatment and the results will be similar.

The UK is an interesting case. I heard just last night that for 200 out of the previous 250 years, Britain had a debt/GDP ration worse than today. So Cameron is dredging up the old tart Tina to justify draconian cuts yet, according to actual facts, id Britain is close to bankruptcy now, it has virtually always been in bankruptcy, including when it kicked off the industrial revolution and when it was an Empire.

Borrowing is actually desirable, for the average man in the street, under certain circumstance. It’s not bad, per se. When Romanians successfully revolted, partly because people had no food, Romania was a net creditor, yet, internally, it was very poor.

Now is a good time for NZ inc to borrow.

A short time ago was a stupid time to give tax cuts to our wealthier citizens to the tune of 70 mil per week.

However its other minister John Boscawen will drop his portfolios and will not be replaced – meaning the party will continue with just one of its two ministerialships.

Mr Boscawen was appointed Act’s deputy leader at a meeting this morning and will also lead the Act Party’s Parliamentary team. Hillary Calvert was appointed the whip.

Roy no joy. And Boscawen to concentrate on Parliamentary team leader.

Sounds like a cautious sensible transition, hard to know how much is pragmatism and how much is little choice for Brash.

Great, another $90k to house and feed her for a year, on top of the $90k she’s already defrauded us (taxpayers) of.
Would have been better to punish her by completely cutting her benefit and NOT imprisoning her. Making her work to support herself is probably the harshest punishment she could receive.

It appears that the Brash ACT is settling to its work, I agree DJP, CK had it right, let Roy sink without trace. The little I know of John Boscowan he played a straight bat and now the change is made he will transfer his loyalty to The Don, a trait sorely missing in recent political upheavals, but hopefully re-emerging as desirable behavour. Such a contrast to the very messy welfare lifestyle inspired shenanigins of the bmfo party launch.
Removing the last of Rodney’s dignity would have been churlish and IMO unnecessary, now will someone convince Bill English that he is yesterdays fish and chip wrapper and get him to go quietly, wait on the platform with all his baggage, for the November express and leave the next three years to the big boys.

And the Defence Force has released unprecedented details about SAS operations in a bid to discredit an article in this month’s Metro, written by journalist Jon Stephenson. Mr Key said the assertions outlined in Metro did not stack up under the NZDF microscope.

“I’ve got no reason for NZDF to be lying, and I’ve found [Stephenson] myself personally not to be credible,” Mr Key said. “Jon Stephenson’s a guy that texted me one night impersonating Duncan Garner … I hung up on him, because when people impersonate somebody else, I don’t take them seriously.”

One can only wonder at the total lack of value in this initiative given that Turkmenistan does not have freedom of religion – Former President Saparmurat Niyazov’s book of spiritual writings, the Ruhnama, is imposed on all religious communities.

Internet usage in Turkmenistan is under tight control by the government and websites run by human rights organizations and news agencies are blocked.

Hell, circuses were banned until 2008. Perhaps that’s why the UN has only been allowed in now 🙂

2011 Tornadoes: Is Climate Change To Blame For The Devastating Weather? [UPDATE]

Data shows a steady, overall increase in tornadoes over the last 50 years. But as for this April, the jury’s still out on whether climate change or regular old bad weather is to blame.

“Climate change? No,” said Howard Bluestein, professor of meteorology at University of Oklahoma. “This is something that happens every 10 or 20 years when everything comes together like this. This is just natural variability.”

Most meteorologists agree with Bluestein.

“Any particular years you can’t attribute to changes in global climate,” said Wurman. “If we started seeing this every year, we’d say that this is a climate change. But we’re not seeing that.” Rather than a climactic shift, he said, “this is really just bad luck.”

While the number of officially recorded tornadoes has risen dramatically, that’s primarily due to better reporting, tracking and more people, homes and infrastructures in the twisters’ paths, say researchers.

That means that small twisters — ones that do little more damage than tear the branches off trees or peel the surface off roofs and may have flow below the radar screen in the past — are now being counted. The number of serious tornadoes, on the other hand, has stayed constant, evidence that Wednesday was a rare event rather than part of a trend.

Yet some scientists say that climate change — especially the increased greenhouse gas concentrations associated with global warming — may be at least somewhat related to the formation of tornadoes.

Looks like the Auckland tornado was about the same size as the Greymouth tornado a few years ago, about an F2.

I can’t understand why people keep suggesting NZ “doesn’t get tornado’s” we clearly do and they are relatively frequent events, especially in Western districts.
We have had a damaging tornado on average once every two years in the Greymouth urban area, and many historic events recorded as well, I am sure Auckland has similar stats.
Yet it has only been in recent years that the metservice has started issuing tornado warnings, though I guess that could be due to a better understanding of the conditions necessary for their formation.

The New Zealand Debt Management Office (NZDMO) has confirmed it will issue the equivalent of about NZ$4,500 worth of debt for every New Zealander this financial year.

The government’s debt manager said today it was lifting the 2010/11 domestic bond programme by NZ$3.5 billion to a maximum of NZ$20 billion. This is the equivalent of around 10% of GDP.

I will never be an apologist for mass murder or extremism or Fascism (surely Empire is a form of Fascism?), which is why I apply the same standards to the perpetrators of Imperialism, and depleted uranium and drones and torture and agent orange and Dictators in the Middle East and previously in South America as I do to the mass murderer who was killed yesterday.

Yes, OK, alright, I didn’t expect much from the far-left but you’d think that in the 21st Century they’d be a little bit more subtle with their moral equivilence.
