Key points;
An abnormality in a brain structure called the cavum septum pellucidum is a marker for increased aggression and lack of remorse, and one researcher estimates that these traits are up to 50% genetic in origin based in twin studies

Murray – pretty unhelpful response. Useless in fact. What’s clear is that it is CERA’s job to do work in Christchurch, not Jack’s. He is quite justified in asking what the publicly funded agency is doing. Are you saying you don’t want it to be accountable?

What an insult to all his victims, not just the Bali victims but all those you don’t hear about. About ten years ago , some of his thugs went to the spice island/the Moluccas..and slaughtered a lot of people..gave them the usual choice. Convert to islam or be beheaded. After the slaughter they rounded up 1,500 children and circumsised them. This was a peaceful , humble defenceless , Catholic community.
A good friend of mine and his three business associates were almost beheaded in Ahceh a few years later by more of Bashir’s thugs. Many people seem to think he is Indonesian but he is not. He was born in the Yemen and went to this part of the world to spread his poison. When the Indonesians were cracking down on islamists , he hung out in Malaysia..and did recruiting there. Malaysia , the Pakistan of SEAsia.

Ender .. the people living in CHCH are suffering big time and I also feel terrible for them. This is why I get pissed off every-time I see/hear Dalziel in the news, almost daily, slagging off EVERYTHING about the recovery effort be it power, sewerage, water roads etc. How the fuck does she think the MASSIVE repair job can happen so fast when quakes are still happening. The moron says the people can take the pain of someone announcing all houses on the left side of “Smith” St are condemned, here’s $200,000 see ya later. Those on the right hand side, your houses can be repaired, your place will be repaired and we have 500 builders/sparkies plumbers etc are on the way.
I beg the MSM ignore her. Leave her campaign for the mayors job closer to the election.

So The Dom Post, Small and Whale are climbing in big Gerry claiming that he should make a definitive statement on the future of various Christchurch areas, houses etc.

EASY TO SAY.

BUT, if the statement is found (by the public, not to mention the Courts) to be premature (not withstanding ANY protections apparently offered by the CERA Act):
• Will they compensate land/homeowners?
• Will they compensate insurers?
• Will they guarantee that Parliament will indemnify those recommending properties/land that is to be abandoned?
• Will they ensure that the compensation package, if any, is equitable (fair is not appropriate in this context)?
. And, what about adjoining/neighbouring properties?

I reckon a few days/weeks to get it “right” is a small price (apols to those suffering in ChCh) is a small price.

The MSM is very good at highlighting the perils faced by individuals and families whose lives have been devastated by the events that have happened in Christchurch over the last 9 months. We have seen a lot of stories about Cantabrians emotively pleading for certainty and a sense of direction.

It is easy for us to relate to these individual stories, as mothers with babies wonder aloud “when will this end”. It is also easy for us to side with them against organisations like CERA.

But putting emotions to one side for a moment, difficult as it may be, we should remember that we are talking about rebuilding a whole city. There are tens of thousands of such stories taht CERA have to deal with and they simply do not have the luxury of dealing with individual cases. It is their job to put in the infrastructure that will make the rebuilding possible, and to make sure the private sector, in particular, heavy construction and insurance, work towards the best possible outcome.

It’s not that CERA don’t care. I’m sure that they do care deeply about the job they have to do, but the constant clamouring and nitpicking can only be a distraction from the huge job of resurrecting a devatated city.

MSM will not ignore her. This is the MSM idea of news. That’s why they select people who are suffering and keep pounding the emotional aspect. I have yet to see an objective analysis of what is involved in deciding whether to abandon communities, settlements, infrastructure etc that have established over 100 years and relocate thousands to an as yet undetermined place — while at the same time dealing with re-estblishing the commercial centre. Lianne, of course, doesn’t have the answers and knows that she doesn’t have the answers. This makes her politicking cheap and nasty because she is preying on the misery of those who can’t help themselves at the expense of those who are trying to do something. The walrus did much the same thing the other night. It was shameful.

I can understand impatience on the future of Christchurch, but I can also understand why it’s very hard to make decisions about it’s future while the quakes keep happening.

I guess buildings and land that need to be wriiten off should be as soon as possible, but it’s a very difficult continually chnaging situation.

Heard an interview with the PM on the radio in which he discussed some of the complexities about the CHC insurance delays.

A property owner insures their property and part of the premium includes an EQC levy. Yup – got that.

If there is a total loss of the property and the land, then the claim is ‘straight foward’ and can be settled. Yup – got that.

But if the land is declared ‘unfit’ but the house itself is repairable, then what happens to the insurance claim?

I understand that this is one of the sticking points in discussions between Brownlee / CERA / Insurance Companies.

Perhaps someone closer to the Insurance industry can help here?

Elaycee …… Yup, got all that. That is excatly the point I made. But there are many other issues such as, as someone said earlier, one side of the street compred to the other.
Then there is the question of the reduction (loss) of value of land that is, technically, useable (if someone will agree to insure any building thereon), but is currently mortgaged.
What is the value of the lenders’ security?
Can such a property be sold when no purchaser can get loan finance?
How are those and the many other issues to be solved?
Pre-ejaculation would be a disaster.

Those looking for instant gratification (solutions?) need to grow up.

As for the so called MSM …..

Another complication would be if the house CV is $300k. House is damaged and estimated repairs $50k. The house insurer says they’ll pay the $50k repairs. But the land is still moving / subject to liquefaction. The house will be buggered if it has to be moved to repair the land underneath it – (impractical its built on a concrete slab rather than on piles). What happens if this property is written off? EQC pays to $100k. Insurance Company has agreed to pay for repairs $50k. What about the shortfall?

A further issue is the number of uninsured dwellings – and these owners still have their hand out for a government bail out. Why?? They made the decision to remain uninsured – why is there be any expectation that the taxpayer will fork out again?

Most can appreciate why so much time is required to reach the correct decisions. Those who lambaste Brownlee for the delays in sorting this out, clearly don’t know the issues.

But I’d hate to be one of those waiting – it must be a nightmare.

Could you please point me to the thread on The Standard where you copped a ban? I very much doubt the ban was justified, but would still be interested to see the ban ruling in its surrounding context.

Just to comment in slightly more detail, I generally don’t bother reading the commentary (or the blog posts) at the Standard, as I find my time is better spent elsewhere. However, I took a bit of a look at what people there had to say about the Darren Hughes saga, and more recently, about Whaleoil. The personal attacks on Whaleoil have been way over the top, and I single out for particular mention those from “Micky Savage” – as a supposed practising lawyer he really should know better. Moreover, in relation to the Darren Hughes saga, their hypocrisy is plain to see.

If, for example, I think back to the honey trap saga involving Neelam Choudary (whom Phil Goff memorably described as “strikingly beautiful”) and Richard Worth, Lynn Prentice had this to say (among other things):

What has interested me with this scandal is not the actual facts – the police will deal with them in their usual manner. It has been the reversion to misogynist type by some of the right (and even some of the left).

My clear recollection at the time was that commentators (and posters) at The Standard took a victim-sympathetic position.

Anyone who questioned Choudary’s motives, or focusing on her status as a Labour activist, was accused of being misogynistic. One can compare those sentiments with the various comments at The Standard (again, both blog posts and comments) in support of Darren Hughes, which was essentially an accused-sympathetic position.

The prize for stark hypocrisy, though, must go to *drum roll* Micky Savage on this thread:

The allegation is that Worth offered Government positions but there would be an expectation of “affection” in return.
When he asked he says that he has done nothing “criminal”. If the allegations were untrue he could have denied them publicly.

Why don’t you and the others apply the blowtorch to Worth? He benefits from the public purse. Instead of that you have incessantly hounded Neelam and she is the victim in this matter. Even if she did “entrap” him, which is denied, he is the one who has committed the ethical breaches. She does not have to prove a thing. He ought to make a full public explanation of his behaviour.

Compare the words in bold with what “Micky Savage” had to say in relation to the Darren Hughes saga.

So bottom line: don’t play at The Standard unless you enjoy banging your head against a brick wall that has Labour good-National bad spray painted on it!

Thanks Pete – that’s a pretty tenuous basis for a ban.

I find it interesting that (as you rightly pointed out) Rob wrote “Attack bloggers for the Nats, a party which runs as a franchise of an Australian company (Crosby Textor), reckon that the presence of a mate from Australia at a regional Labour Party meeting shows that Labour is “subject to foreign influence”. Lynn Prentice defended this as “a sentence of satire”. How interesting, then, that the same Lynn Prentice is particularly ruthless in banning anyone who (on satirical grounds) suggests that author at The Standard have, er, certain links to the Labour Party.

Again, the hypocrisy is breathtaking.

The recent aftershocks have sheeted home the fact that Christchurch is going to be a fairly rocky place to dwell for a while yet. Long enough maybe to stand back a fair distance & figure out what this & future generations are going to require rather than duplicate what’s gone.

So far, not unexpectedly, we’ve read, watched & heard trainloads of emotional claptrap. I reckon this is mostly because it helps sells hamburgers or what ever the MSM relies on for advertising revenue.

What is missing as far as I can see is debate over what Christchurch will need to prosper in the future. For example will suburban shopping malls take over from small CBD shops? In this day & age is a traditional CBD required at all? Will the people who have given up hope & moved to other cities ever return.

These & questions & many like them need to be asked & debated now.

Nostradamus, what led up to that was a running argument I’d had with lprent – I suggested that political behaviour, politicians and on blogs, was not a good look and was not productive.

LP said political skuldeggery was an essential part of our democracy (except with things like credit card data of course), and if we didn’t have it he would leave the country.

I suggested that he is confusing robust debate with an excuse to be political thugs. It’s an adiction they won’t let go of, they think the very survival of the country depends on them getting into power by any means, no matter how nasty or against the rules.

I know that many people around the country have had a gutsful of that sort of behaviour. But Labour in particular are so tied up in their own world they don’t want to know about it. Hence I decided the only option is to shake the hell out of the status quo. It’s simply to do if enough people put their minds to it.

At this stage I’m not asking for votes in November, that has to be earned.
I’m suggesting that if we shake the polls up it will have an effect. Simple.

The issue I have with the Mainstream Media is that they are biased towards creating the most sensationalist slant on any given story.

The facts are massaged into such a way as to get the most sales.

Any Mass media outlet operates in the same way. If you have been in any situation where you are part of one party involved in a noteworthy incident reported in the media, then you can see for yourself where the media will portray the facts in the best editorial light to make the point it wants to, rather than report on what has happened.

This has been going on for decades.

I was on the ship in question in the operations room at the time. This Fishing Boat ignored Notices to Mariners that were published well before this firing took place. Contrary to what the article would have you believe, NZ Navy warships do not conduct live firing excercises on a whim. They are planned well in advance. The fishing boat had it’s radio switched to the wrong frequency, where it would have heard warning broadcasts conducted hours before the event, also the type of construction would be very difficult to see on radar.

So we had a civilian vessel, that had failed in it’s obligation to have Channel 16 on its radio on, that had failed to keep up with NOTAMS for the area that it was operating in, which is also charted as a firing range for Naval Training purposes. No mention of this by the MSM.

Of course the MSM, even back then, backs the little guy over the big guy, because thats what sells.

Question.

Buildings A,B,C and D are structurally sound and their land is unaffected. However, they are exceptions. All around there are structural and geotechnical issues that make the immediate neighbourhood (commercial), non-viable. How do you tell the owners that the neighbourhood is to be put out to pasture and no more commercial developement is to be allowed. The land will have to revert to a “no-build” zone. Who pays?

As a possible way for you to take things forward, Pete, I thought the blog project at policy.net.nz had real potential to generate some good discussion around various political issues, but unfortunately Bryan Spondre’s over-the-top moderation style had the effect of stiffling “robust debate” (to borrow a phrase from your earlier comment).

Maybe you can make better use of the left-right forum on your blog?

The difficulty the government has in Christchurch is what to do with the people who will be affected by the decision to abandon area’s deemed unsuitable for human habitation.Who pays for it.
The problem is exacerbated by the numbers which could rise into the tens of thousands, extrapolating out to millions of dollars, to resettle these displaced people in new areas where the risk of eartquake damage is less.
In addition to that there is already problems reinsuring properties in the region, thereby creating a situation where if residents agree to stay, they will effectively have no cover and the governent may be called upon to fill the void.
Whichever way the cards fall there will be outrage and dissent.

When I see R0B away from being an overwraught message repeater he seems fine, he’s just fraught up in the message machine – one that’s not working beyond those with their behaviours modified sufficiently to applaud desperately.

I think it’s a real pity, a waste of potential. The Standard could be a very good meeting of minds on the left, but they prefer it to be a bleating of kinds.

Sweet Jesus wept, while I live in relative safety and stability, albeit so far, I spent yesterday in a tilt slab single story at Ferrymead.
We endured a 3.2 @ 1328, closely followed by a 3.8 at 1330 then a 3.5 @ 1538 all bloody minnows. Now apart from the bowel loosening effects of those we are being given several warnings that last Mondays events have escalated the risk of a 6.9 by a factor of 25%. This from a “F**KING scientist who although Ken Ring esq was a charlatan, an ignoramous, and a bloody scaremonger, this so called expert can make such bizzare and theoretical predictions that are no more credible in my eyes.

joanna, MNIJ and all the other desperates who would take their mother to le Guillotine in the name of political expediency. getting it right is more important and with daily events that cause more uncertainty in achieving that, your wailing and flailing is nothing if not stupid.
.STFU unless you have a valid point to make and your rubbish here today is mindnumbingly surely not that.

Just had cause to ring the DoL regarding the 90-day trial period (of which I am, or maybe was, a supporter). Not very politically neutral, are they? Got a quick lecture about how things were better for workers under Labour.

Anyway, worker on a neighbouring farm falls off the hay trailer and breaks his clavicle. Under the 90-day trial, he is fired (unable to execute his job). In reality, he’d be off on ACC for 6-8 weeks, then back at work in time for calving.

Instead, he’s losing his job, his accommodation, and he’s applying to WINZ for emergency assistance.

According to DoL and Federated Farmers, while not adhering to the spirit of the law, the employer is legally allowed to do this. What do you reckon, more fodder for the Left?

I was treated by a Chiropracter in a NI town on the recomendation of my GP (one of the very best) and the outcome exceeded all expectations, mine and the GP’s.
The Chiropracter is an outstanding PROFESSIONAL, he diagnoses without xrays in nearly all consultations, He treats to achieve positive results not for an income stream, He trained as a medical graduate and pulled the plug at registrar level, then embarked on training in Chiropractic.

For you to imply that no chiropracters are professionals when this man so clearly is one I shows me the limited intelligence and knowledge you have. Your comparison was straight out of your arse

The fecken seismologist may as well be a proctologist for all that matters, he is just SPECULATING, based on very limited data, at least Ken Ring claimed nothing more than a theory.
FFS all the “experts working up the available data are nowhere near singing from the same song sheet.
These 7500 or so events cover many square Kilometers and vary in depth from two to 30 kilometers, how accurate is that going to be analysed in a few months when so much of the evidence is under the bloody surface.

Next you will be denigrating CERA’s progress as it stands alongside the Japan recovery, then you will be comparing apples with walnuts. They had much of their devastation from the freekin Tsunami and they have more money, experience and the shaking has diminished, ours could be still building who the hell really knows.

Chiropractors are famous for using of x-rays – it’s an integral part of their scam to appear scientific. They’ll even x-ray you standing up, on the grounds that it gives a better picture of the strains on the spine.

I was going to say homeopath instead of chiropractor, but I seem to have hit the mark okay.

We pay taxes for the guarantee of free healthcare and acc to cover the costs of accidents.

Ask them to help out, its nothing to do with the employer unless there is a case to prosecute them for providing an unsafe workplace.

Agreed and agreed.
In this case, the injury has occurred in a place of employment where almost no work is being done at the moment (winter on a seasonal dairy farm). I ask all my employees to take holidays at this time. The employer wouldn’t be out of pocket keeping him on (ACC would be picking up the tab), and if he had been at work 10 days longer, he couldn’t have been dismissed.

You can’t legislate niceness, but shit like this just makes people believe it’s a “fire at will” law. And why wouldn’t they?

The one thing we don’t know is what this employee’s track record was like. If he was going to be terminated anyway it might put a different slant on the issue.

For what it’s worth a small minority of dairy farmers do the majority few favours when it comes to dealing with staff. Although the difficulty of attracting & keeping good workers has caused most to get their act together over the past ten or so years, instances such as disclosed by yourself are far too common. Some of it is because farmers, although businessmen, have little experience in modern staff relations.

In any case in small rural communities word travels fairly quickly & this same farmer may find good workers will not be queuing up at the gate when he advertises for a replacement.

@ Gravedodger (1.29pm) – we were woken by the 4.4 this morning and certainly felt the 4.4 while we were out at Halswell this arvo. We missed the two later ones as we were driving. Had to go to Shirley this morning, and the liquefaction out there was awful. One has to wonder about the advisability of rushing to make a long-term decision on where rebuilding can take place whilst the ground beneath is still so unstable. I wouldn’t want to be Gerry Brownlee or Roger Sutton for any money; their jobs are literally no-win.

Solid but unspectacular. 2 and 1/2 years with me, 3 years with his previous employer and 5 years with the one before that.

I agree that the free market tends to sort this sort of thing out in the end. Doesn’t help the guy right now though. I posted here in the hope DoL and the Feds were wrong when the Act is applied like this, and someone more knowledgable could shed some light.

I have gleefully ridiculed people who referred to it as “fire at will” legislation, because that’s not how I use it. Because of the 90-day clause, I have given people a chance that I would not have employed before.

Looks like I may have to eat some humble pie . . .

My son has worked in dairy and it seems a great place to get used to a work ethic. This is a sad story and clear example of a minority of employers who abuse their power. Unfortunately, the 90-day law has helped those bad employers. Most good employers don’t need it to manage people competently.

The company had about 100 full-time staff and more than 650 casual staff before the February earthquake, but few can be kept on.

I feel sorry for the Ratana faithful for having anointed Hone as the young man from the North who carried the treaty in one hand and the Bible in the other for I fear they’ve omitted to perceive that only one of Hone’s hands holds one of those things and guess which of the two things he holds?

This is an important oversight I feel in a religious movement, but I await developments with great interest as Hone moves through the anointing process with his mum looking on proudly. Quite frankly, the best thing for Hone would be to team up with Destiny. Destiny, Ratana and Hone would make a formidible if ill-balanced force but it could work if wisdom prevails and while both Ratana and Destiny too have it, Hone doesn’t, although he is intelligent and he knows enough to control his ego long enough to make it seem to his base that he actually does give a shit about them (which he doesn’t of course, Hone cares about Hone – Hone’s pretty good). He’s got a bigger ego than Key. That’s how big it is.

However a Ratana/Destiny/Hone alliance is Hone’s best hope of a power base that breaks into the people with money demographic and frankly, no party can survive without that demographic.

Destiny BTW IMO is a necessary component because Ratana are the nice guys. They’re very wise and astute but they don’t have the personality to bash G-d into Hone’s head like Bishop Tamaki does and that’s what needs to happen if that alliance would ever ever work and even then it may not work.
