They claim that laxer town planning “is key to our economic recovery”(1). But the European countries hit hardest by the economic crisis – Greece, Italy, Spain and Ireland – have weak planning controls and urban sprawl. The nations which have proved most resilient have tougher laws and compact settlements.

Weak planning exacerbates economic problems because capital is diverted from productive uses into speculative ventures; cities decline as they hollow out; and badly-sited businesses, disaggregated settlements and long travel times drag down economic efficiency. On Sunday the New York Times reported that doubling urban density raises productivity by between 6 and 28%(2).

This team as all of the signs of 2007 with unfit players, Woodcock and Boric, players out of position Kahui and Nonu, players not up to All Black standard Toeava and so it goes on and on and on.

IV2, SC – I read through Goff’s “live chat” and it was loaded with a few people asking patsy questions – and of course Goff gave boilerplate answers. At least Trev might make his sound interesting.

I think the AB selections make sense – it’s as important to keep all possible finals participants match ready as it is to keep most of the team intact from game to game.

pdm – I like this center pairing. Smith is certainly a good footballer, but not the athlete the other two are. This idea of “smart footballer” is a myth IMO. Rugby ain’t rocket science.

That said, the wing choices are a little odd. Versatile I guess.

I do hope none of you had invested in the Swiss Franc as a refuge from the US dollar, Euro, or any of the other crappy currencies of the world, because the Swiss central bank announced overnight that will be pegging the Franc at 1.2 Euros – and that they will buy any amount of Euros to keep it that way.

Oh dear. Technically the Franc always was just another fiat currency but it had a different reputation thanks to the way the Swiss ran their economy. Not any longer.

Gold to $2000 / ounce shortly – and thereafter the sky’s the limit.

According to a blond girl on TV3 this am we (NZ and OZ taxpayers) are going to stump up millions to educate the 100’s of thousands of island primary school children who ares’t getting an education.

If these “nations”can’t educate their children ,then why is it a cost to NZ and Oz taxpayers.After all the UN insists on post colonial independence.

Meanwhile….does anyone know why the IPCA report on the shooting of Halatau Ngaitokau (not the correct spelling; cant do with googling) on the NW motorway by the OAS has STILL not been released, although reports on police actions from later dates have been?

The release was to be “soon” when I was still in parliament, more than a year ago….something aint right here…

“Why does the state landlord rent to people who associate with criminal gangs?

Why is it assumed that people who have never worked have a right to state-funded housing when they won’t accept the responsibilities that go along with it?

In this age of information sharing among government agencies, and when it is obvious that the women and children living in the state house are funded by the domestic purposes benefit, how is it that bludger boyfriends can not only freely live in these houses, and off these women, but also will damage the property and intimidate the neighbours?

How is it that every street in state house areas has a tinnie house or two that is supplied by the gang controlling the area and are operated with apparent immunity?

Why is there an open legal aid chequebook for people who have lived off the state all their lives, giving them the freedom to waste the time of every court in the land in a bid to shield them from facing their own responsibilities?

Why does Housing New Zealand continue to relocate the bad tenants they evict? What’s wrong with a policy of never re-housing them? With such a policy there would be some serious good behaviour breaking out in neighbourhoods across New Zealand.

James Stephenson – I agree that positions such as first-five are very specialized and it is rare for a leaguey to make a successful transition, but I have little doubt Andrew Johns or Brad Fittler would have excelled there. Mat Rogers made a reasonable fist of it without even being a specialist standoff, and Tasesa Lavea was a run of the mill stand-off, so I believe your theory that “there’s a reason why no dumb leaguey has ever made it” hasn’t truly been tested.

Union could take note of league’s proficiency under the high ball, and the flat line kick/chase for starters, as well as bomb accuracy.

Bit of an odd lineup for the RWC opener. The midfield combination and the wing choices I can only see as giving chaps a run early. I’m very interested to see how Dagg will go at fullback though. Muliaina has been great but will need to crank it up a gear to keep his spot for the big games. If Dagg continues on current form he’ll be hard to keep out, either at fullback or wing.
Fingers crossed that there are no injuries to the loose forwards.

Scott – it’s been tested to my satisfaction. The closest anyone came was Iestyn Harris but he gave up and went back to League. The only league players to light up a Union paddock have been in the back three and it took Tana a good decade to work his way in from wing to inside centre. League bred player from 8 to 13? Don’t bother.

Yes, well I’ve always been a little wary of the Gold Bugs myself.

Having said that the reality is that there are now few safe havens outside of commodities like gold, oil, palladium etc. It’s no longer even a question of equities being risky; irrespective of the moves of various stock markets the currency risk has ballooned in the last few years as governments around the world print money to pay down debt.

Which brings me back to the Swiss. All this “defending the currency” talk has a whiff of the Sterling Crisis or the NZ devaluation crisis in 1983/84. The SNB claim that they’ll spend whatever it takes and I can’t help wondering when the world’s FX traders, speculators and Joe Bloggs are going to start testing that. Soros must be wetting his pants with delight. With this decision the Swiss have opened themselves up to two questions: how much money have they really got to keep buying Euros (200 billion, 300 billion, 1 trillion), and how many Francs are they willing to print before the average Swiss goes beserk about inflation.

Good times. Good times.

There’ll be some good action in the pool games. I don’t think all of the quarter-finalists can be picked. You can’t go past France and NZ from Pool A, and Australia and Ireland are probably safe in Pool C. I’m looking for Georgia to give Argentina and Scotland a scare as they try to qualify with England out of Pool B, and maybe Samoa or Fiji could make things a little tough for Wales qualifying with South Africa from Pool D.

Scott Chris &; JS – as I have said many times my preferred midfield is SBW and Kahui and it is a shame they are not paired together. Hard to see why Toeava is ahead of both Guilford and Jane – both need game time and Toeava has been tried and failed so many times previously it is hard to see what he offers that the other two don’t. In Guilfords case it seems he is being punished for one bad game and I ask again who hyped him up before that Australian test?

I can’t see that midfield happening. The selectors will stick with Nonu and Smith who have the combination, experience and current form.
I agree with you re Toeava – a useful reserve but that’s all. If Muliaina hangs on at fullback, I’d go for Jane and Dagg on the wings, but after having gone for Guildford in the squad he should be given another opportunity to make his case.

As a long suffering Blues fan, I tend to see Toeava in a more favourable light. I agree, his performances for the All Blacks have been less than inspiring, but he is big and fast and versatile. Having had Pat Lam and Shane Howarth as coaches in recent years hasn’t helped his cause.

If he could improve his handling, I see him as the perfect bench player, who covers a number of positions and has impact.

If you think that the countryside should merely be regarded as a tool for economic growth, there’s something profundly wrong with you, as there is with this wretched government, which in this case has clearly revealed itself to be in the pockets of the developers, as the Tories always have been.

Meanwhile, there are huge amounts of brownfield sites, and unused urban housing, which the government and the developers have little interest in – because they don’t see enough profit in it.

What, in God’s name, is this country going to look like in 50 or 100 years time, let alone 1,000? It’ll just be one huge urban sprawl.

In some ways it’s nice to see that there is still the interest in rugby – gives me a warm feeling about NZ.

Unfortunately I just can’t join in. After following the game for two decades, playing it and loving the feeling of running around people, between people and over people, I lost track of the game from the late 1980’s until I returned over a decade later.

At that point I was keen to see what the new era of professional rugby was like. Given what I’d seen of professional sports in the US I had a lot of doubts, especially given that they had always been professional, whereas NZ was transitioning from a century of amateurism. I looked forward to Friday night games in prime time TV with something called the “Super 12”, not to mention the “Tri-Nations”. Wow – two tests a year against the old enemy, the Springboks. I was keen to get some advance news about it all by chatting with one of the guys unloading our household goods. He was a big Maori guy who played prop for some Westie club and he was not that impressed: it was “fancy” he said.

And so it went. I guess my first indication that something was going wrong was in 2001 during an All Black-Springbok test in Dunedin. Awful weather of course, made worse by being played at night. Little backplay with a lot of dropped balls and much kicking. It was all goalkicks as I recall, especially since the Boks had such a useless backline. Then, with about 20 minutes to play and the All Blacks leading by only 6 points or so – I reached for the remote and turned it off.

If you had told me a few years earlier that I would have done that in the middle of such a test I would said you were nuts.

Since then my rugby watching has been all downhill. The SKYTV was gone by 2005, which is probably when I watched my last game of any sort. My old friends seem bemused by this, as an entire topic of conversation now consists of me letting them talk while I sip my beer and nudge the topic along with comments such as really?, amazing, wow, and so forth. It’s incredible to me how little interest I have in the game nowadays – but I suspect I’m not the only ex-player/follower who has slipped away from this world. I’ve not even really thought about why this is? Perhaps I should.

This close to an election you’d think he’d be trying to raise his profile by hammering the government at every opportunity..

BTW – were there any Labour MP’s at Chris Carters Valedictory speech? I watched it but the quick flick of the camera off of him sometimes it was hard to tell.

Sorry Scott, I am living proof that there is such a species…I remember huge amusement in Tonga…they are even more fanatical about the silly game than here…they just could not compute a male from “New Seeland” who had no interest in “ruckby”….even more puzzled when they were told I had a Tongan girlfriend 20 years my junior…(don’t be envious chaps, its not all beer and skittles chez Garrett..)

Right Hemisphere, an Auckland-based 3D graphics software developer and recipient of an US$8 million soft loan from the government, has been sold to German software giant, SAP Ag, for an undisclosed sum.

Fine but:
Right Hemisphere was once touted by the Helen Clark-led Labour Government as a potential New Zealand success story, and had won some key contracts with big clients in the United States since it was founded by Thomas more than a decade ago.

The New Zealand arm of the company, which provides research and development services to its American office, made a pre-tax profit of just under $700,000 in the year to March, 2010.

The decision in 2006 by then-Economic Development Minister Trevor Mallard to give the company a five-year interest-free loan of what was then $14 million went ahead despite Treasury advice that it had “a low probability of resulting in net benefit to New Zealand”.

At the time, Clark said the aim of the loan was to help establish and support a world-leading 3D digital content and graphics industry.

As part of the deal, Right Hemisphere was to develop a cluster of spinoff companies in which its American backers, US venture capital firms Sequoia and Sutter Hill, were also expected to invest.

All of which begs the question; was Treasury right in the first place and did this loan of taxpayers money just enrich the shareholders without the benefits that should have accrued to NZ taxpayers which was part of the deal.

Why haven’t the MED prepared the public over the file sharing law?
There iss o much confusion out there.

An email was sent out to all motels in NZ (by the Association) saying that you will get 3 fines and then be disconnected and then tonight on Prime News the Presenter said you would get 3 warnings and then your internet provider would be ‘obliged’ to disconnect you.

I thought you couldn’t be disconnected as of yet as it still requires the government to sign off an order in Cabinet for that to happen.

If the people advising the rest of us and the MSM are getting it wrong then there obviously needs some public awareness from the the MED – Simon Power if your reading this please sort it!

A farmer wanted to have his hens serviced, so he went to the market looking for a rooster. He was hoping he could get a special rooster, one that would service all of his many hens and when he told this to the market vendor, the vendor replied: “I have just the rooster for you. Dave here is the horniest rooster you will ever see!”

So the farmer took Dave back to the farm. Before setting him loose in the hen house though, he gave Dave a little pep talk. “Dave”, he said, “I’m counting on you to do your stuff”. And without a word he strutted into the hen house.

Dave was as fast as he was furious, mounting each hen like a thunderbolt. There was much squawking and many feathers flying, till Dave had finished having his way with each hen. But Dave didn’t stop there, he went in to the barn and mounted all the horses, one by one and still at the same frantic pace. Then he went to the pig pen, where he did the same. The farmer, watching all of this with disbelief, cried out, “Stop, Dave, you’ll kill yourself”. But Dave continued, seeking out each farm animal in the same manner.

Well the next morning, the farmer looked out and saw Dave lying on his lawn. His legs were up in the air, his eyes rolled back, and his long tongue hanging out. A buzzard was already circling above.

The farmer walked up to Dave saying, “Oh you poor thing, look what you did, you’ve gone and killed yourself. I warned you little buddy”.

“Shhhhh,” Dave whispered, “The buzzard’s getting closer.”

A horse and a chicken are playing in a meadow. The horse falls into a mud hole and is sinking. He calls to the chicken to go and get the farmer to help pull him out to safety. The chicken runs to the farmer, but the farmer can’t be found. So he drives the farmer’s Mercedes back to the mud hole and ties some rope around the bumper. He then throws the other end of the rope to his friend, the horse, and drives forward, SAVING him from sinking!

A few days later, the chicken and the horse were playing in the meadow again, and the chicken fell into a mud hole. The chicken yelled to the horse to go and get some help from the farmer. The horse said, “I think I can stand over the hole.” So he stretched over the width of the hole and said, “Grab my ‘thingy’ and pull yourself up.” And the chicken did and pulled himself to safety.

The moral of the story:

If you are hung like a horse, you don’t need a Mercedes to pick up chicks!

One misty Scottish morning a man was driving down from Wick to Inverness. Suddenly out of the mist, a huge red-haired highlander steps into the middle of the road. The man is about six foot three and like a walking wardrobe. He has a huge red beard and despite the wind, mist and near freezing temperatures, is wearing only his kilt and a tweed shirt. At the roadside there also stands a young woman. She is absolutely beautiful – slim, shapely, fair complexion.. ….. heartstopping. The car driver’s attention is dragged from the girl when the highlander opens the car door and drags him from the seat onto the road. “Right, you” he shouts, “I want you to masturbate”, “but……” stammers the driver, “Now…or I’ll bloody kill you” So the driver turns his back on the girl, drops his trousers and starts to masturbate. Thinking of the girl on the roadside this only takes a few seconds. “Right” says the highlander “Do it again!” “but…..” says the driver. “Now….” So the driver does it again. “Right do it again” demands the highlander. This goes on for nearly two hours. The driver has cramps in both arms, he has rubbed himself raw, and despite the mist and wind, has collapsed in a sweating jibbering heap on the ground, unable to walk. “Do it again” says the highlander. “I just can’t anymore – you’ll just have to kill me”, whimpers the man. The highlander looks down at the pathetic heap slumped on the roadside. “All right” he says, “NOW you can give my daughter a lift to Inverness.”

After her fifth child, Mary decided that she should have some cosmetic surgery “down below” to restore herself to her former youthful glory because her bomb doors were dangling a bit too low and looked like a ripped out fireplace. Time and childbirth had taken its toll and she reckoned that,with five children being enough, she’d tidy things with a nip here and a tuck there so it looked more like a piggy bank slot rather than a badly packed kebab. Following the operation she awoke from her anaesthetic to find three roses at the end of the bed.
“Who are these from?” she asked the nurse, “They’re very nice but I’m a bit confused as to why I’ve received them.”
“Well” said the nurse, “The first is from the surgeon – the operation went so well and you were such a model patient that he wanted to say thanks”.
“Ahhh, that’s really nice!” said Mary.
“The second is from your husband – he’s delighted the operation was such a success that he can’t wait to get you home. Apparently it’ll be the first time he’s touched the sides for years and he’s very excited!”.
“Brilliant!” said Mary. “And the third?”.
“That’s from John in the burns unit”, said the nurse. “He just wanted to say thanks for his new ears!”

About 20 students raise their hands.

I could not be more ashamed of my alma mater. Had to go their recently for one of my daughters’ debates and walking the corridors and seeing the leftist trash on the walls of the lecturers’ offices mad me ill. The place is beyond redemption.
