Food from the ocean is a result of over hunting massive deforestation and causing the extintion of half the native species by the settler Maori who were the single worst evironmental disaster in the history of these islands.

You also might what to chat to the descendants of the crew and passangers of the Boyd about their hospitality Metiria… oh wait, you CAN’T. They were dinner guests though I guess.

I heard an interesting piece on the wireless about China’s gender imbalance, and how it purportedly affects bank savings.

Here’s the theory. Because there are so many more men than women in China, the men have to save a reasonable nest egg in order to attract a decent mate.

Older NZers do not have a poor savings record. As a country, we have an appalling record at dealing with white collar criminals..At least they no longer have their own prison and golf course since Ohura was closed.
Does anyone have any idea of just how many millions have been lost to these conmen? There are the numerous fraudsters and then all the other crooks from the finance companies..Some such as the well known guy in Ak whose name I can’t spell , was ripping off people in the 80s also.

– that controlled 40 per cent of the total wealth in the network.

The United Nations will warn this week that the world’s population could more than double to 15 billion by the end of this century, putting a catastrophic strain on the planet’s resources unless urgent action is taken to curb growth rates, the Observer can reveal.

That figure is far higher than many estimates – the UN had expected the world to have more than 10 billion people by 2100. There are currently nearly seven billion.

The point is that the selfish gene drives the population explosion and the human economy is a subset of the worlds ecosystem, of which humans are a part.

The Green Party completely sidesteps the issue by denying any link between birth and financial incentive. Their prescription is more equality (more state houses higher benefits).

There can be no other interpretation except that if a woman gets pregnant while on a benefit, she must accept state enforced contraception if she wishes to continue to receive her $194 per week social support. Despite dog whistling to misogynists everywhere, most New Zealanders would consider it abhorrent that the state would force women into contraception. This is an extreme form of state violence against women. The state has no right to control a woman’s fertility, under any circumstances.

Well I’m with you on that, at least as far as the lenient bankruptcy laws go. I don’t advocate jail for fraudsters and serial bankruptees, but I do advocate reasonable perpetual repayment of debt.

Phil, an observation.

When you cut and paste material that is formatted in a conventional manner, I note you do come up with some interesting stuff. i.e. the 147 bank theory. I don’t read your other posts, as they don’t seem to make any sense.

When you format in your staccato style, it’s difficult to read. Isn’t your purpose to communicate your ideas? If so, then why demand the reader invest effort in trying to decipher your tedious stylistic devices?

In Palmy this morning some nice folk have gone and destroyed (quite effectively – the plywood is in at least 2 bits) the Labour, United Future and (for some odd reason) the Manawatu Striders (walking/running club) signs near the Fitzherbert bridge whilst leaving the two National and the Act sign alone. Not even a moustache for Mr Key.

Partisan vandalism is normally quite amusing, but I prefer some well crafted letter removal or face enhancement – something a little more subtle.

Well, the old man emails me and tells me he’s off to see the Doc.

Seems he’s been trawling the web again for symptoms of ill health, and came to the conclusion that he had suffered from a “Transient Ischemic Attack”

He may well have done, so it’s best to check, but it did occur to me that the interweb has certainly had a profound effect on the doctor patient relationship, and has possibly responsible, at least in part, for burgeoning health costs.

If you listen to a couple of Old Timers chin wagging down at local supermarket, one moment they’ll be discussing horse racing, and the next they’ll be postulating that amyloid beta deposits of the gene for the amyloid beta precursor protein are the fundamental cause of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Hayek who’s economic philosophies that you despised so much Phil, was the brilliant precursor of complexity theory, he stressed the inherent limits to knowledge. Hayek is a proponent of free markets and capitalism. Anyway, complex system theory which is at the heart of econophysics had developed further Hayek’s idea of spontaneous order in complex systems.

So, Phil is quoting an interesting study that comes from a pro free-markets/capitalism supported field of research, which is something that Phil is against.

A good read on the Occupy Wall Street camp. The constant drumming seems to be fraying a few nerves, but they’re getting ‘tips’ and this money is re-distributed, to the chagrin of the drummers.

The drummers claim that the finance working group even levied a percussion tax of sorts, taking up to half of the $150-300 a day that the drum circle was receiving in tips. “Now they have over $500,000 from all sorts of places,” said Engelerdt. “We’re like, what’s going on here? They’re like the banks we’re protesting.”

Some data from a poll of OWS protesters –

(52%) have participated in a political movement before
(98%) say they would support civil disobedience to achieve their goals
(31%) would support violence to advance their agenda
A vast majority of demonstrators are actually employed, and the proportion of protesters unemployed (15%) is within single digits of the national unemployment rate (9.1%)
An overwhelming majority of demonstrators supported Barack Obama in 2008
(51%) disapprove of the president while 44% approve, and only 48% say they will vote to re-elect him in 2012, while at least a quarter won’t vote
(32%) call themselves Democrats, while roughly the same proportion (33%) say they aren’t represented by any political party
(65%) say that government has a moral responsibility to guarantee all citizens access to affordable health care, a college education, and a secure retirement—no matter the cost.
Protesters are divided on whether the bank bailouts were necessary (49%) or unnecessary (51%)

I entirely agree with you. The confusion over the handshake was a total nonevent. I suspect that something like that happens just about every day. The fact that it happened in a highly charged and emotional atmosphere is completely understandable and it simply goes to show that the Prime Minister is human. This, unfortunately for the left, is why he is so popular. Their hatred of them has become pathological. They cannot cope and are quick to seize on any semblance of fault no matter how trivial and insipid the point may be.

I do not know Andrea Vance but, from the tenor of her article, I doubt whether I will be drawn to anything else she writes. Like you, I had a look on the Standard. It seems that they do not like her there either.
