Hi, I just voted. At my voting station there were two people – who could have been staff on a break as they were sitting behind the desks of staff giving out voting papers – wearing national party rosettes, is this legal? I thought it was very offensive and inappropriate at a polling station!

The is a really interesting point in the video about the history of WRD. It started because of some nutbar who killed a lot of women at a Montreal university. The point is that their was a Muslim connection that did not fit in with the militant feminist agenda. That did not get mentioned. JCW – one of the anomalies of electoral law, can’t say anything that may influence voting online but it’s legal to wear a party rosette anywhere, including as an observer at a polling booth. And party rosettes are also worn doing door knocking asking people if they have remembered to vote – my stepdaughter had this happen to her this morning.

What’s the purpose of it anyway? Fair enough get rid of the hoardings but does anyone seriously think a floating voter is going to log on to political blogs today, to find out how they should vote? I don’t understand someone’s thinking on this.

Let’s hope if we’re not allowed to talk about something or other which must not be mentioned, at least we’re allowed to talk about why.

Hey guys – can you tell me what channel will have the best election coverage tonight and what time it starts? I want the best coverage from a pro-right perspective (if that is even possible here).

If I were I’d avoid whichever one Johanssen’s on then. The other one’s bound by definition to be much better.

What should one do if one finds a political flyer in ones letterbox today, seeing as one knows for a fact it was not there at 20:00hrs last night?

Go down to the nearest polling station and perform a citizen’s arrest on those officials from whichever party’s brochure it is, who are in attendance. I’ll alert the media if you can give me some location details. Take a photo of it setting in the letterbox with today’s newspaper in it as well. That should be enough evidence.

Nonsense. Medical science explores lots of things. Many of them turn to be bunk. Western science is based on the idea of doing research on things and trying to draw conclusions from experiments or, where this isn’t ethically possible, having a good theoretical understanding of the issue in question. Contrast with this chinese medicine or Ayurveda etc where one does things merely because tradition dictates that ones does and not because there’s any logical basis to it, or any evidence that it works.

So where does western medicine stand with the doshas for example, chiz.

I quite like Dr Chopra’s approach on those and he’s an endocrinologist so he should know a thing or two. But Chopra’s approach isn’t really common practice and the reason its not is because of the attitude I spoke of, is my conclusion.

I’m not sure what you’re asking. Doshas come from ayurveda, are clearly based on the greek concept of humors, and, just as clearly, have no basis whatsoever in fact. The greeks came up with the concept of humors because back then no one understood biology. They didn’t know about cells, germs, genes, proteins and had to make do with whatever primitve concepts they could come up with. Ayurveda has modified the ideas abit and then they have become culturally entrenched.

Chopra by the way is a well known crackpot.

Actually chiz & reid, several of the journals I review for receive multiple papers/year investigating chinese, traditional Indian or ayurvedic medicine. These papers tend to either take apart the components and observe if the molecules work a testable way in model systems, or they look at the entirety of the “remedy” (since effects can sometimes be due to combinations of chemicals, which is why we say “dont drink alcohol with your valium”, for example).

Some do appear to work, the vast majority don’t.

There’s also the placebo effect to account for.

While New Zealand was the first to allow women to vote in parliamentary elections in 1893, (South) Australia was the first to allow women to vote AND to stand for parliament, a year later in 1894. Enlightened New Zealand did not allow women to stand for election until 1919.

South Australian was of course as much of a self governing entity as New Zealand was, back in 1893/4.

Not so much a Presidential Fail as careful Presidential wording.

I haven’t denied that there is research on this stuff pharmachick, just the motivation. Western science is reductionistic and looks for evidence that things work, and if so, the resaons for this. Ayurveda etc usually don’t care.

There is a positive, promotional article in the Press today re Women’s Refuge. ..I wrote about when I applied for a job with the refuge and rec’d a job description which said among other things , that I would need to demonstrate a commitment to ”lesbian visibility.” Of course this has not been published. Do others know how much this org. is a front for lesbianism??

Yeah I know chiz, but there seems to be a perception that the “traditional” forms of medicine and western science/medicine each run on parallel (or even competing pathways)… not necessarily true (I guess that’s the origin of the term “complementary medicine”). Also, the excessively reductionist thing may not be working out so well these last 10-20 years anyway … becoming overly reductionist (among other things) has severely compromised pharma pipelines worldwide.

That’s an interesting phenomena isn’t it Pharmachick. My position is that I don’t object to the scientific method, I object to the thinking that simply because we haven’t yet discovered why it occurs doesn’t mean it doesn’t occur.

Correct me if I’m wrong but as I understand Pharma tries to understand the human organism as a chemical organism with things like mind-body interaction ignored by diagnosing when an adverse reaction occurs then 100% it’s an adverse chemical reaction. Things like quantum-mechanical interactions aren’t even on the table since that’s not drugs one can make and sell, that stuff therefore, is something for someone else to care about.

This is not to say pharma companies are evil, simply an observation, just like aero companies don’t think about cars and why should they?

But the net result today is a heck of a lot of research funding is focused entirely on correcting chemical imbalances in the human organism rather than on say, nano-research which holds potential to perform surgery at cellular level.

I’m not saying chemistry isn’t critical, I’m saying it’s not the only thing which is critical, within the human organism and it’s a shame the capitalist model doesn’t require all industries to operate twenty, fifty, one hundred years into the future, as a matter of course. It’s a shame everyone is rewarded for short term performance.

Some good discussion about White Ribbon Day before. I agreed with a lot of what Reid was saying — especially about non-judgemental approaches.

My experience with men’s anti-violence groups here is that the organisers tend to be white and effeminate with a heavy emphasis on how “men need to learn that they can’t always be in charge”. I saw a lot of masculine Maori men who were concerned about their friends and relatives join . . . then get disillusioned with the feminist narrative and leave.

With them left the opportunity to develop a system to work with the communities they were in touch with.

My dad has been a GP in a mostly Maori area for around 30 years, and is scathing about the portrayal of women as perpetual victims and men as perpetual villains. His comment was: “Most Maori men get their first lessons that bigger stronger people get their way through violence from their mothers, and many of them enter adolescence very angry toward women as a result.”

This view is bourne out by research used by Child Matters which found that while men tend to kill kids more, women are more likely to physically abuse them.

The whole “Show you’re against violence toward women” is just more feminist bullshit.

I say, show you’re against violence to everyone.

Marty, I speak against violence to everyone. As a part of that I don’t have a problem speaking out against violence to women. I am part of an organisation working against violence to children. And I would support speaking out against violence towards men.

I am against having to always bend over backwards making sure you don’t omit and offend any group when you speak out.

I don’t know about elsewhere but in Dunedin White Ribbon seems to do a good job of creating awareness, it includes stopping violence groups and the city council, and a lot of men involved.

Maybe so amongst the consumers of alternative medicine, but as far as I’m concerned the former is faith based and the latter objectively empirical.

This surprises me. I’d be interested to hear of actual examples of this. I’d have thought that if there were a demand for a certain product, then there would be some generics manufacturer more than happy to churn it out and flog it off at a fraction of its original price. If the pharmaceutical still works better than newer products, or has new applications, such as for aspirin or thalidomide, then market forces would ensure that it survives. I would suggest the unavailability of certain drugs can only be because they were superseded by more effective products.

Reid, yes it is interesting. Your point about pharma is fairly spot on… Although they are advancing with integrating nanotechnology, faster than you might imagine. But yes, the overly chemical/reductionist approach has fairly much crashed and burned recently… Almost forcing the adaptation of more integrated approaches in the last 10 years. Martin thanks for this insight and I imagine will be well borne out if tested in public.

As a man who understands feminist techniques I can well imagine this happening. Feminists aim is to brand men in general and white men in particular as being guilty of patriarchal oppression since the world began and it’s time it stopped.

One striking illustration in my mind is in the early 80’s at Akld Uni where they decided to brand their women-only space “wimmin’s space” for they didn’t even want the traditional spelling to intrude upon their psyche and remind them of their enemy.

Their problem is, most “wimmin” aren’t like them and prefer children, husband, stuff like that.

Hence their aggressive campaign since the sixties to proclaim those values as symbols of oppression which unfortunately, the MSM and the Universities and the whole shebang, swallows and proclaims on an almost universal, wholesale and daily basis by telling “wimmin” that by acting just like men, they can become “fulfilled.”

What a shame.

So our ability to target diseases of multiple etiology (which most modern disease eg cardiovascular) has dropped off … Resulted in poly pharmacy ie a drug for cholesterol, one for blood thinning, one for…

Your old man made some very pertinent observations…..no doubt he is now in hiding with a bounty on his head offered by the man haters down at the local Women’s Refuge. Over the last thirty odd years the battle between the sexes has been upgraded to a war by certain feminist groups & in war truth is the first casualty.

Women DO beat kids & I’ve witnessed a (drunk) woman cause the initial argument & land the first hits in an episode of domestic violence more than once. What is also true is that men generally have far greater upper body strength & cause far more damage.

Personally I would walk out of a relationship that had deteriorated to the point of violence….life is too short to waste it in unnecessary hate or fear.

During a trial, in a small Missouri town, the local prosecuting
attorney called his first witness to the stand.

She was sworn in, asked if she would tell the truth, the whole
truth and nothing but the truth, so help her God.

The witness was a proper well-dressed elderly lady, the
Grandmother type, well spoken and poised.The prosecuting
attorney approached the woman and asked,
“Mrs. Jones, do you know me?'”

She responded, “Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams.
I’ve known you since you were a young boy and frankly,
you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, cheat on
your wife, manipulate people and talk badly about them
behind their backs. You think you’re a rising big shot when
you haven’t the sense to realize you never will amount to
anything more than a two-bit paper-pushing shyster.”
Yes, I know you quite well.”

“The lawyer was stunned. He couldn’t even think for a few
minutes. Then, slowly backed away, fearing the looks on
the judge and jurors’ faces, not to mention the court
reporter who documented every word.

Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room
and asked,
“Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?”

She again replied, “Why, yes, I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley
since he was a youngster. He’s lazy, bigoted, and has a
bad drinking problem. The man can’t build or keep a
normal relationship with anyone and his law practice
is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention
he cheated on his wife with three different women.
Yes, I know him. ”

“The defense attorney almost fainted and was seen
slipping downward in his chair, looking at the floor.
Laughter mixed with gasps, thundered throughout the
courtroom and the audience was on the verge of chaos.

At this point, the judge brought the courtroom to silence,
called both counselors to the bench, and in a very
quiet voice said, “If either of you morons asks her if
she knows me, you’re going to jail, and I will personally
throw the key into the river.”

Scotty:

I always try to balance my intake of everything which is what you would expect a sensible fellow to do.

Whenever I eat two greasy old pork chops I always double up on my Lipitor that night so my system can eliminate the cholesterol while I sleep and after a serious attack of the munchies on the lollies and pavlova I double my recommended dose of metformin.

If I eat a bucket of salt and vinegar chippies as well as increasing the Lipitor I take a double dose of Atenolol, Inhibace plus and Asprin to off set the extra salt.

You are what you eat I say! 🙂

Now I’m not one for falling in love at the drop of a hat but I’ve had a lifelong desire to drink Nancy’s bathwater. I should look up the list for Suzi Quatro too but it could prove too much for the old ticker.

Well nasska. That’s damn fine of you to consider my particular gripe however I must point out that I have no problems at all with a legal eagle earning his justifiable income plying his trade.

It’s the pieces of shit that spend their lives sucking the blood out of the taxpayers to support their huge incomes and then have the audacity to appear in public on say KB and try to defend their rape of the welfare system at the expense of the people who really need a hand up that really pisses me off.

Not that I have any particular POS in mind of course. 🙂

Pete G 3.17, no worries, I won’t be choking cause I can wash them down with beer … but yes if any bad suprises occur I might be switching to vodka 🙂

And if the bad suprises become real, at least I can wake up tomorrow wondering if it was all just a bad dream 🙂
