In the 2005 Election I was a fucking idiot
I readily admit it.
I voted for New Zealand First.
Winston Peters had stated his Party would remain on the cross benches and vote issue by issue.
I was utterly naive – I did not appreciate that even a politician could break such a fundamental statement so pivotal to his election.
Can a Party make such a promise before an Election and then just do whatever it fucking well likes once they have dishonestly acquired some power?
Now we are faced again with exactly the same proposition.
Insanity is defined as making the same mistake more than once and expecting a different outcome.

Maybe more than Election system change, we need a method whereby parties which break fundamental promises can be disqualified.
I mean, there is Commerce Law which requires a product to function to the purpose it purportedly fills.
Why no constraint on politicians who lie their way into Parliament?

The “OccupyAuckland” website seems to hold a fascination for me – I think it’s like the Kardashians; you know you shouldn’t pay any attention but you just can’t help yourself …

Anyway, they now have a “Declaration” posted on the front page. I won’t paste it here, it’s a bit long, but if your blood pressure can handle it pop over there and read it. Whoever wrote it just comes across as SOOOO serious and full of himself. It kind of reminds me of when an 8-year-old kid sits his parents down and proceeds, with due gravity and seriousness, to reason with them and explain why he can no longer live at home and must therefore, regretfully, move out. And you’re not sure whether to react with sympathy and kindness, burst out laughing, or grab them and slap them about to straighten them out (“slap them about” metaphorically speaking of course, Sue Bradford …)

I really think they need to have some realities pointed out to them. Like, they are NOT the 99%. How many are involved in New Zealand? A few hundred? That makes them more like the 0.009%. The REAL 99% are people like you and me – busy getting on with our lives, working, being parents, husbands, wives, taking the kids to soccer or hockey or netball, and just getting on with life.

These people are NOT the 99%. They DO NOT represent me, and I resent their implication that they do.

Haha – so the breathless ‘churnalists’ at the NZ Herald have repeated comments attributed to the MC of the Gween opening campaign in Wellington – the same dopey bint who was slapped down so publicly by both Sir Peter Jackson and also the Prime Minister, over the Hobbit.

Lets face it – Robyn Malcolm is nothing more than a paid performer in a very second rate TV programme that used to air on TV3. (Not much going for it, is there?) Her biggest ratings were when she was publicly humiliated by the PM / Peter Jackson et al over the Hobbit – a film that is now being made in NZ (no thanks to Malcolm / no thanks to the Unions).

I can’t understand why the Herald seems to think Malcolm’s views (on anything) are somehow newsworthy, because now she has surfaced and shot off her trap, the entire Hobbit debate will be back in front of the voters.

Not a good move by the Gween strategists.

Just when we had forgotten how Miss Malcom and her gang nearly shut down the film industry she launches into a highly personal attack on John Key. She is arrogant and dumb. She needs the support of the public for her career. But she stupidly alienates a large part of it. I’ve also blogged about Robyn Malcolm this morning, but admit that I hadn’t thought of the hypocrisy of her being happy to star in a TV show made with public funds.

But as far as the Hobbit controversy goes, I’ve linked to a post from last year where Rosemary McLeod absolutely eviscerated the actors’ union’s campaign against Jackson and The Hobbit; McLeod said

I’m pretty sure I’ve witnessed the most inept industrial action of my lifetime.

The word I’m struggling for – and which is so missing in The Hobbit fiasco – is professionalism, or the art of knowing what you’re doing.

In union undertakings, as in business or government, you should be able to detect it. It helps.

If nothing else, the list of credits at the end of a movie should put actors in their place.

They are nothing without producers, directors, cameramen, makeup and hair people, the people who hold the cables, dialogue coaches, sound recordists, set dressers, the people who supply lunch, the people who make the clothes, script writers, publicists, marketers, insurers, drivers, stunt people, the people who haul props around, set builders, and the bankers who put the money up front.

To put so many jobs in jeopardy by industrial action is to take on a heck of a lot of responsibility, and to court failure. And by the way, most of those other workers, the wide pyramid on which an actor stands in solitary splendour, are freelancers who are glad to get the work.

Robyn Malcom and a few of her high-brow mates put hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars at risk. She is the last person who should be pointing the finger at John Key. And I suspect that the Greens will suddenly find that the public has the same distaste of their personality politics as it does of Labour’s.

Don’t be so hard on yourself, voting NZ First was not exactly a wrist slashing event at the outset of MMP.
With many others I party voted NZ first back in ’96, the tight five, only to watch them disintegrate with bitter infighting. Since then I have not been tempted to back them again. Winston is an experienced politician but not to my liking, I have spread my party vote around a lot since then, including ACT and once the Greens.

And none of this gets into Paul’s penchant for indulging fringe characters—from flirting with 9/11 truthers to allowing racist newsletters to be published under his name.

Nor does it mention his support for government intruding into your bedroom, telling you what drugs you can use, and how you can express yourself; or his hostility to gay rights, the right of privacy, separation of church and state, and to state’s rights regarding abortion. All while speaking up for the right of slave-owners to violate the Constitution and “secede” by violence to perpetuate slavery.

Ron Paul is not only not a libertarian, he is, simply put, a con artist: a man who has fooled a large number of otherwise intelligent people into thinking that he believes in liberty, when in fact his beliefs—assuming he has any—are a patchwork of poorly understood anti-government positions and opportunistic populism. He does serious damage to the cause of liberty, and cannot deserve the support of anyone devoted to its defense.

@nasska: Careful – Water Woman is actually standing in Epsom.

No doubt she thought that she could get more coverage from standing on the same stage as John Banks, but it appears she may need to spend less time at the Occupy site at Aotea Square and more time in the Epsom electorate if she has any thought of winning more than 0.6% of the vote she won last time.

But don’t hold your breath – even 0.6% seems like a long way off….

Truly, we who are caught up in the humdrum treadmill of working so we can pay taxes may occasionally be guilty of not standing back & appreciating the hectic life of the political activist.

If she is drawn into the Christchurch CERA scandal even 0.6% may be only a dream.

I want to vote National but I can’t get my head around this,

the anti smacking rort & screwing 87% Kiwi parents.
Lowering the MP’s to 99 referendum and ignoring us.
The ETS and the screwing NZ Business as well as us.
The Foreshore and Seabed theft from All Kiwis.
Now it’s Asset Sales, the future theft from ordinary mom and pop Kiwis to the institutions and rich pricks like Fay, Richwhite.

But what is the Alternative?

Wussels watermelons _ I mean I like some of their energy policy but their social policy is worse than Labours.
Goof, Parker, Robertson and Cun()liffes Labour with all the old faces still around to have a second go at rorting us.

Its so bad as Hobsons choice it could drive a man to drink or loose women.

A larger representation by United Future in the next government will mean important family issues are given much more weight – UF is the best chance for this to be emphasised. Serious about addressing:

Dunne: make families as important as the economy

UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne says New Zealand is paying lip service to families’ real needs as he called for an annual report card on whether families are being helped or hurt by government policy.

“And that needs to start by measuring the way policies impact on families with the same vigour that Treasury measures economic impacts of policy and law.

“It is just not happening for families in any meaningful way, and when it is done, it is given very little weight in government thinking.

“This needs to change,” Mr Dunne said.

“When was the last time you saw a policy dropped because it made life harder for families?” he asked.

“Families are too often an after-thought in New Zealand politics, and as a result they are constantly batted around.

The report card is well worth a look.

I believe exactly the contrary, i.e., the demise of the whorish Dunne and his ghost party, will be beneficial to New Zealand.

P.G., can you list the achievements of the dreadful Families Commission, the quango established by Labour to please and appease (read buy out) Dunne? Our country will be better off without this useless outfit.

P.G., despite of your best partisan efforts I know the Families Commission is an irrelevance, a quango which has not advanced an inch the cause of NZ children.

Dunne’s whimsical bureaucratic creation did not exist before his deal with Labour and nobody neither noticed nor needed it.

The Families Commission should be disbanded immediately and the money put to better use.

One dark night outside a small town near Palmerston North, a fire started inside a local chemical research plant and in a blink of an eye it exploded into a massive ball of flames.

The alarm went out to all the fire stations for many kilometres around.

When the volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the chemical company managing director rushed to the fireman in charge and said, ‘All our secret formulas are in the vault in the centre of the plant. They must be saved. I will give $50,000 to the fire crew that brings them out intact.’

But the roaring flames held the fire-fighters back. Soon more fire crews had to be called in as the situation became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the now panicking managing director shouted out that the offer was now $100,000 for the firemen who could bring out the company’s secret files.

From the distance, a lone siren was heard and another fire truck came into sight. It was the nearby Maori rural township volunteer fire station unit composed mainly of Maori over the age of 65. To everyone’s amazement, the little run-down fire engine roared right past all the newer sleeker fire engines that were parked near the plant and without even slowing down it drove straight into the middle of the inferno.

Outside, the other firemen watched as the Maori old-timers jumped off, right into the flames and fought the huge fire back on all sides. It was a performance and effort never before seen.

Within a short time, the old timers had extinguished the fire and had saved the secret formulas.

The grateful chemical company’s managing director, overwhelmed with joy, announced that for such a superhuman feat he was again upping the reward to $200,000 and he walked over to personally thank each of the brave fire fighters.

The local TV news reporter rushed in to capture the event on film, asking the Maori chief, ‘What are you going to do with all that money?’

‘Well,’ said Rangi, the 70-year-old fire chief, ‘The first thing we gonna do is fix the brakes on that fucking truck!’
