Great Start Christchurch!
Nobel Village is a new subdivision going up in Yaldhurst. The City Plan and an Environment Court ruling require it to provide minimum street widths and cycle lanes. CCC planners have not required this of the developer. It all gets more than a bit murky as solicitors and bureaucrats resort to their bureaucrapise and legalese to justify why cyclists and local residents don’t count.

I had wanted to share a sample of the email correspondence between CCC and the neighbours’ group opposing unsafe streets but CCC emails state clearly that they may not be shared. More of CCC’s famous transparency and openness.

Looking at the Rena picture above and looking ahead while listening to the chatter about, it will not be a surprise if Switzer lift this ship off the reef.
The are water tighting the bulkheads and working down that track.
If you look at the pic above you can see a gantry crane has been installed along the back of the bridge quarters , presumably for lifting gear on and off.

Isn’t the fundamental problem the involvement of the whole ‘crat/RMA/Enviro court rubbish ?
The councils already tax every new development (they call it a development fee and also require developers to install, at their cost, all utilities) and then they moan about the extra water and waste costs – and simply put up rates to meet those costs and their everlasting salary gravy train.
Would it not be easier to have a single nation-wide set of minimum standards, no development fees, no limits on where developments can occur – AND cheaper land ?

When Central Government takes dollar in taxes, only 75 cents is available for spending. The “system” (collection, policy advice, paid meals, and something called admin) eats the other 25%. So it is with local bodies, although my info is that the output is nearer to 70 cents than 75.

Time to scrub them all… well sort of. Certainly time for radical reform.

The UnitedFuture confidence and supply agreement with National raised the contentious issue of heli hunting.

In response a Heli-hunting group speaks out.

The guide and client were dropped within a few hundred metres of where the animal was likely to pass and, if needed, the helicopter was positioned by flying slowly and hovering so the animal would take the preferred route, and not rush off at high speed and disappear, Mr Withnall said.

It can be challenging enough to get close enough to animals on foot.

A helicopter drops off ‘guide and client’ and then ‘flying slowly and hovering’ so the animal toddles along the ‘preferred route’ so the client can pop off an ‘aerially assisted trophy’?!!

Pete, I don’t understand the objection to heli-hunting. Is it because it’s noisy and spooks the game for hunters on the ground, or is it because of some Bushido-esque credo about having to give the animal a chance before it can be legitimately killed? If the latter, I don’t buy it. To those objectors I say: Never buy meat from the supermarket again if you feel that strongly about it. Absurd to make something illegal on that basis.

adze – have you ever done any stalking? If so you will have an idea of how easy it would be to sneak up on an animal with a helicopter. And how likely it is that with a bit of quiet manouvering you will get the animal to toddle into range of someone on the ground.

The heli hunting argument is similar to the cycleway argument where anglers and fishing guides say all those people coming through will spoil the solitude. The interest of the weel-healed over more people travelling in a more earthbound manner .

The debate about the use of helicopters for hunting can never be resolved satisfactorily unless specific areas are partitioned. The problem goes further than hunting. It extends to the whole issue of backcountry access.

Jetboating into wilderness areas is highly contentious. There is not the slightest doubt that it interferes with the solitude enjoyed by many trampers and fishers. On the other hand, a significant number of people can only gain access by mechanical means. Should access be denied to people who are elderly or unable to walk in to the wilderness area? Taking it to the extreme, we have the issue of the proposed greenstone monorail. This will provide the access that does not presently exist. However, at what cost?

The debate does not stop with hunting, fishing or tramping. We have already had the debate in relation to mining. There are some very strongly conflicting values. Value conflicts are the most difficult to resolve. This is where Reid joins in with his notion of cognitive dissonance.

There may well be a higher value which may assist resolving the conflict but the problem is achieving universal acceptance of that higher value.

We will ignore the fact that the Iranian regime is fighting a war by proxy against Israel.

Yeah, Adze is right. Nothing wrong with heli-hunting. But the hunting lobby don’t like it, just as they don’t like 1080 poison, so of course Dunne is going to fight on behalf of their whims, because then they’ll vote for him if he does.

Scott Chris, how much do you know about heli hunting and what it can really be like? Or are you just basing your support for it on freedom of choice?

Hunting is supposed to be sort of sporting. Heli hunting is the equivalent of two people holding a boxer on the canvas while his opponent kicks his head in after breaking his kneecaps and fingers. Or of the All Black fifteen playing against the Taiwanese sevens team.

You’re wrong Pete. Theres nothing wrong with being flown into remote parts for animals. I’d love to be able to fly into areas where no one had bombed it up for a while.

I have friends who make their living from guiding and running helicopter companies, its good for them and good for our local economy. Its no different from going game fishing or any any fishing on a charter boat. You are paying for expertise.

Most operators have areas for commercial clients mostly on private land where there is money in it for the land owner. The clients pay big money and the expectation of an animal is high and rightly so.

These guys are’nt the problem DOC are the problem wanting to poison deer in areas that are available to people like myself who have to walk everywhere, which are the majority of us.

If it really is just a conspiracy theory that the EU is the model for world govt aka the NWO, then it’s very peculiar isn’t it that it’s all playing out precisely how said theory predicts it will, with stuff like a manufactured crisis engineered to generate a solution which was always pre-destined. But no. It can’t be. This is just democracy in action, isn’t it. Nothing directed about it at all, in any way. That would be just fucking mental.

I’d love to be able to fly into areas where no one had bombed it up for a while.

Exaccery PEB. At my advanced stage of decrepitude I always pay for a chopper.

However being dropped in the sticks with all the comforts of home to go and chase the wily little buggers thru the scrub on foot is a different matter to being dropped on a ridge in view of the deer then have the chopper shoo them up to you.

Both are of course completely different to having helicopter gunships contracting to DOC to seek and destroy.

Perhaps Pete can elucidate his leaders stance?

Helihunting for rich tourists Johnboy. Nothing wrong with being flown into hunting areas, that’s been happening for yonks, and culling is sometimes necessary.

But I don’t see how being flown on top of an animal to get an ‘aerially assisted trophy’ will ever result in a fair or humane kill. It’s not sports hunting, it’s rich pricks skiting with their wallets.

Not a lot, but I can’t see why it should be banned or regulated unless it impacts *in a significant way* on other hunter’s freedom to hunt, or causes noise pollution etc.

Personally I find the idea of heli-hunting distasteful, but that’s just me.

Presumably it would Pete for the last I heard a deer hearing a helicopter engine having been carefully stalked for simply hours by a hunter on the ground, is liable to just run away. I’ve seen it on telly, you see. That’s what really happens. I don’t know why. It just does.

Funniest thing of all is if two of you hunt in pairs on Stewart Island is watching your mate spooking the whitetail who sink to their knees and crawl off thru the crown fern!

Pete, how do you feel about freezing works? What if someone just wants a feed of wild venison by their own hand?

If the “sporting” aspect worries you, then simply call it something else – or poke the borax at the 19th hole. It’s complete overkill to make something illegal just because something isn’t sporting old bean. Cruelty to animals is another matter of course, and if that was an issue, then sure, look at that; but otherwise it’s overkill.

adze – cruelty to animals is an issue with helihunting. Hunters pride temselves on clean quick kills (as do freezing workers). Animals don’t usually stand still and wait when choppers fly in.

1. Searching for a game animal from the helicopter and chasing it until it is physically exhausted then landing at a random site client and guide disembark to shoot the game animal and retrieve it.

2. Searching for a game animal from the helicopter. Once an animal is located a random landing is made and client and guide get into position for a shot. The helicopter is then used to herd the game animal back toward the client and guide.

There’s also the issue of ground hunters walking and stalking for hours, even days, and then a chopper comes and spooks all the animals in the area.

(who’ll snap shoot at anything, like a female camper brushing her teeth with a l.e.d. headlamp on) I know this from personal experience, because when I was a late teen staying with farming friends up north during duck shooting season, you would have been horrified at some of the unsafe and redneck activities we got up to. You don’t get much more physically exhausted than being shot.

I don’t know where you got this sports thing from. We hunt at my my house for meat. Only wankers hunt for heads and leave the meat, so it doesn’t matter if you fly in, levitate in or walk in – if you don’t eat it- fuck off.

Also a helicoter won’t spook all the animals in an area, where are they goin to go to, Australia? A ground hunter can put animals to ground just as easy as a machine

Heli-hunting on public land wasn’t allowed. Heli-hunting was occurring (legally) all over the place on private land, lots of people were making lots of money, noone cared. DoC got a strange idea that they could get a piece of some magical heli-hunting income stream by charging concessions for people to heli-hunt on public land administered by DoC. Why did they think this idea would be supported by the owners of said land? Who knows. Their maths was daft anyway but that’s besides the point.

Heli-hunting was lobbied for by individuals/ companies that want to make money off public land. Who misses out? The very large majority of the owners of the land, who have their experience ruined (walkers, hunters etc), who can’t afford the same opportunities as the wealthy tourists who can still (as they have done for so long) heli-hunt on private land anyway. But no lets open the whole country to foreign hunters at the expense of the land owners… 🙁 for what?

Personally I think heli-hunting can be done humanely or inhumanely. That doesn’t mean it’s right. If a private land owner wants to make money let them, but our land is for all NZers, not for all wealthy foreigners at the expense of your ‘average’ kiwi who wants to enjoy the hills, and sure that may include a trophy animal down the line, and that’s fine too.

Talk of sporting, I was in Wanaka 20 years ago, an Aussie came out of the Park and didn’t have a head. He asked the operator who also owned a deer farm, how much for a hybrid. $1000 a point was the answer, he dropped a stag in the paddock and wrote out a cheque for $25K. Everyone was happy, not sport but we had a big night

This comes from 2 math teachers with a combined total of 70 yrs.. experience.
It has an indisputable mathematical logic. It also made me Laugh Out Loud.

hj with respect peak oil has nothing to do with any of those elements.

The oil prices for no reason at all rose to over $100 a few years from the approx $20-30 bbl it used to be for decades until a few years ago. There was no particular traceable reason either in the supply chain or the security situation or the known reserves. This tells me this wasn’t a normal free-market movement but something else entirely.

Whether or not peak oil exists and I don’t give a fuck either way, the fact is, oil isn’t going to run out overnight and the steps we’re talking in alternative propulsion will be quite sufficient to adjust to it in good time, even if it is true.

It’s the same thing as AGW. The planet isn’t going to simply burst tomorrow, so just relax.

The problem is that we like to place the box in the corner of the room and bewail our inability to jump over it. The corner of the room is both international finance and it’s self interests which, although not elected by us, surreptitiously determine what our ‘sovereign’ government does (for them, not for us!); it is also our Christian heritage that totally misunderstood the concept ‘zero’ and has created this unsustainable bubble bust economy presently raping the earth.

If your world view is founded upon a continuum such as yin/yang, zero makes sense. It is the point on the continuum that is neither yin nor yang (or is equally yin and yang). But such a concept of zero is balance, the point to be achieved; both you and your neighbor are fed. If you hocus pocus that concept into Christian world views where the Devil and God are related by blood but not by a continuum zero takes on a different aspect. The Devil is debt and is bad, God is profit and is good, zero is poverty and is nearly as bad as the Devil, it is refusing to play on God’s team; “every good Christian fuck the earth” as the hymn goes.

Disagree Griff. Hydrogen fuel is the future and whether it fuel cells or those hydrogen balls they’ve developed, that’s the only weight-for-weight explosive that will do – electricity never will do for transport that’s just stupid and the science is already here we have both hydrogen fuel cells which generate electricity and hydrogen balls which hold and release hydrogen in the fuel tank. It’s a matter of making it practical by finding a way to crack water with less energy than is given off when that hydrogen burns.

I don’t agree entirely Bereal. Some would do what you say and I think many genuinely are also doing it for altruistic reasons. If this hypothesis is true it helps explain the fact of the rampant leftism which appears to engulf most staffrooms like an Aussie bush fire as seen over their fanatical and continuing objections to the very mild National Standards and their opening salvos on the Charter Schools. They’re steeped in competition-avoidance as only idealists are and this is their problem.

I don’t believe your average teacher is sufficiently aware of how the world works in the working, employment sense of the economy. It seems to me most people who’ve never done anything but teach become less and less aware of the real working life all the parents go through, the more time they spend in the profession. They become institutionalised and thus they see the lefty perspective more and more as being the only valid way.

Sadly my diagnosis is that it’s like they’re a massive herd of lemmings all headed for a huge cliff except they’ve tied each one of us to them via some equation we haven’t yet cracked and the cliff is getting closer, like the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang halftime scene, except we don’t have a car that flies.

BAD PARROT

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad
attitude and
an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird’s mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with
profanity.

John tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying
only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to
‘clean up’ the bird’s vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled
back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude.
John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed
the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked
and kicked and screamed.
Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the
freezer.. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John’s outstretched arms and
said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions.
I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully
intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior.”

John was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in
his behavior,
the bird spoke-up, very softly,

“May I ask what the turkey did?”

Just to add to your expose on the mind shapers:

a) I feel that many potential teachers head for Varsity & think “well, what will I do” & after a little navel gazing take out a student loan to study philosophy or fine arts or lesbian studies & a few years later step off the tertiary treadmill with a few pieces of paper with BA or MA on them, a sizeable debt & no prospect of employment. From there it is a short step to a qualification in social indoctrination (or teaching as they prefer it to be known) & guaranteed employment in the only profession in the world where performance doesn’t count.

b) Teachers have a certain brain chemistry that makes them want to do “something that makes a difference”. By brainwashing the next generation with socialist claptrap they “just know” deep in their insides that what they do is helping “the cause”. That & sweet sherry filled dreams during their long summer holidays in which their contribution to the world is recognised with bronze statures of the “teacher who made it happen” on every street corner.
