With a heavy heart I have to say that Silent T has the inside running. I’m still hoping that Robertson comes through the middle & wins ensuring that Labour will stay in the opposition benches for the foreseeable future.

To this end we will be sacrificing a dog tucker ram to the appropriate deity tomorrow at 10am. 🙂

Kea,

The author of the book Wheat Belly (a doctor) believes that human beings already have massive problems from eating modern hybridised wheat. As someone who has noticed health issues with eating bread (it gives me leg cramps and depression), I’m giving cutting out wheat a go. Haven’t been able to do 100% yet as it’s in so many things and it makes takeaways extremely difficult. My allergic son is also trying it, just in case some of his other allergies are caused by an underlying wheat allergy. Apparently, wheat wasn’t an issue 20 or so years ago, it’s just recently.

Though, maybe, crops can be genetically engineered to be nutritionally better, but that there would have to be a real focus on doing so rather that just engineering plants to resist bugs and grow faster and look prettier.

Lucy, Allergies are becoming an increasing problem. There has been a suggestion that it is caused by our modern life style being too clean. Growing up we are not exposed to as many bugs and germs as we once were. I often wonder if this is why babies instantly shove anything in their little mouths, no matter how awful it is. Perhaps this is to develop the immune system ? A study in Germany showed kids raised on farms had less allergies than city kids.

Modern civilisation would not be where it is now, if not for gluten containing foods. You would have heard the phrase “give us our daily bread”. You can bet that bread was not gluten free. But I have heard the suggestion that modern grains are different to the ancient ones. I am not sure about that myself.

I’m confused. If Ted Cruz is eligible to run for president because his mother was a US citizen, then how can the possibility that Obama might be born in Kenya, at least according to the crazies, be of any significance since I imagine his mother was also a US citizen at the time?

Kea,

Yes, I’ve heard about that hypothesis that modern life is too clean and I personally think it’s crap. Our food is far more complicated now, with so many more additives that it has to be more than just lack of germs. Some people with autistic kids find that removing milk and gluten from their diets makes a huge difference.

I know bread is supposed to be this food from way back that sustains life, and I’ve even read how black bread in the gulags kept people alive, but I don’t think it’s the same anymore.

There’s probably going to be a market sometime soon for people who want access to the old style grains before they were hybridised, just like there’s a market for organics, and just like there is a growing demand for unpasterised milk.

Lucy, check out that – nature – article. I would not dismiss it as crap straight away. It sounds like you are buying into the new-age hippy way of thinking. What would Jesus say about that ! I guess you need some sins to forgive with Sunday fast approaching 😉

I’ve learnt through many disappointments never to get hopes up before the final whistle. But for once in my life I’m ecstatic after a Ranfurly Shield game.

I’ve been living with a kid with peanut, dairy, egg and kiwifruit allergies for 16 years now. There’s a certain amount of experience that goes with that.

Lucy, that experience does not disprove the germ hypothesis, nor does it lend weight to the earth hippy version. Allergies are an immune system problem and that is unlikely to be caused by food. I suggest food is the trigger, but not the cause.

Kea,

Except recent research has found that children with peanut allergy (like my son) have the lowest levels of vitamin d3 in their systems. Is that cause and effect? I don’t know. My son also get migraines from eggs. Apparently people with low levels of magnesium are prone to migraines. That indicates more than just an immune system failure, it shows there’s likely to be a food connection.
