Good Herald editorial on the low-deposit loan issue which touches on the vital point that while its extremely politically inconvenient for National to stand by and let the RBNZ do what it thinks is right, nevertheless it is prepared to do exactly that for the greater good of the economy as a whole, while at the same time, Liarbore under Cunliffe indicates they wouldn’t dream of doing that. So who is the more responsible economic manager?

Re Nick Smith, DOC, etc.

Seems John Armstrong is licking his chops at the thought of Nick Smith being sacked – again for ‘misleading’ etc.

The overarching issue here is any sacking would effectively condone apparent breaches by DOC staff with respect to confidential materials. Seems Government email systems are virtually like Tannoy systems. John Key and his Ministers are now in the awkward position that they cannot trust the integrity of the departments that are supposed to work for them, including the most sensitive ones such as GCSB and Foreign Affairs.

The difference betwwn this case and the ACC case is he intervened in an ‘operational’ matter in the ACC case. In the DOC case, any submissions DOC makes with respect to resource consents etc must align with general Government policy, so it is quite appropriate that the Minister can intervene if he so chooses. DOC works for the Government, not the Green Party.

Therefore John Key and Nick Smith must just stare down Labour / Greens on this one and tell them where to stick it. The questions being asked by Labour / Greens are now completely arcane and are merely going round in circles – perceptions have been ‘set’ and further questioning, etc is hardly likely to advance anything.

RRM is absolutely correct. If the Dep Dir Gen of the department is correct, there was NO Smith direction. And that would make Cunliffe and the red melon liars……being encouraged by the geriatric Armstrong.
They have even tried to extend the argument to Nathan Guy and MPI. Failed.

The Dumbonian takes a different view, blaming the Government for not introducing a CGT.
This simply reinforces the widely held view that Fairfax’s Compost has no understanding of tax law.

And hey have ignored Cunliffe’s promise to intervene and over-ride the RB, presumably by legislation. That, of course, would have no effect in any other area…… More MSM bollocks ????

God’s plan is fulfilled by humans, they are fallable, some nations then rise while others fall, and populations go hand in hand with that as we can see by looking at History; Russia for example, and currently, Japan and other western nations. Cheers.

You need a system that can self-regulate, i.e., if society is too far to the “left'” then proponents of the “right” should make a more compelling argument to persuade voters to select the “right.” The danger is when one side tries to “jam the rudder” through the suppression of debate. Once this happens, society will head towards one extreme of the political pole, and tensions will rise until the Invisible Hand bitch-slaps the system into a new state of being.

The Liberals left National for ACT – leaving the conservatives behind. Act got 8% of the vote and National got about 45%.

Is there anything much else in National other than conservatives or lib/progs kea?

The main point is that the world is getting too greatly polulated for the right wing religious principles to be more than a guide for good behaviour on the part of the individual as they conform to the restriction required of them by the burgeoning population and its organised socialistic government…. I have watched this happen over the past sizty year and while I depreciate it it is a fact of modern life. The solution, short of wars to get rid of surplus population, is for less population producing copulation. I believe the rise in homosexuality while partly now apparent becuase it is a ‘permitted’ activity instead of being behind closed doors is natures , so far vain, attempt to help homo sapien from killing themselves off through over populatingf their little world of limited resorces.

A further thought in the Nicky Smith situation….

Now Labour spent hours in The House on Smith and the ACC, and on Big Gerry and EQC, did they not?

Labour and the red melons spent hours, upon hours, pursuing a dead rat on the GCSB…. and on Vance/Dunne. Correct?

Every tiny issue which they sought to convert into a scandal has been chased in the belief that the great unwashed, the Westies and the folks in the provinces, will vote for them.
But what happens? Nix. Nada. Zip….and lower in the polls.

Then Shearer resigns, and for three or so weeks the labour leadership follies get saturation media coverage. Cunliffe gets selected, thanks to union support, and the Herald’s poll records a jump in popularity. As Kiwi in America noted yesterday, the surprise would have a flat line.

So, what do we have now?
Labour ad the red melons are attempting to screw Nicky Smith for allegedly “influencing” HIS department’s view on matters that are, strictly speaking, outside their responsibility.

Frankly, there are only a few idiots in Hawkes Bay making an issue of the proposed dam and irrigation scheme. Those same idiots want all the benefits of a growing , modern , economy that will be aided by the scheme.

On balance, I think they should continue with their idiotic stance. It will simply encourage Labour and the red melons to run down another blind alley.

Further to Flipper at 9.07 on Cunliffe and the Reserve Bank.

Cunliffe has a strong totalitarian streak. His intention of ending the Reserve Bank’s independence is proof of this. This is a momentous policy shift, which the MSM cannot see for the froth of the bank-loan proportion of home prices.

If a Melon Government of Labour and the Greens encouraged banks to lend up to 100 per cent of home loans, borrowers would be devastated in the inevitable housing market corrections.

In business, Cunliffe’s announcement regarding the pricing of copper broadband undoubtedly hits the share price of Chorus. He thus threatens to repeat his effective confiscation of shareholder wealth (to the tune of two or three billion dollars) when he unbundled Telecom’s copper network in the last Labour Government.

Cunliffe seems to be pressuring it a year before the election. Or are the lefties who make up most of the staff just seizing a chance to beat the drum for the Left.

Has the new ex-Murdoch ex-Fairfax bloke taken the RNZ reins yet? Hope this isn’t an indication of how his regime will play out.

Human rights lawyers say the Government is removing the public’s right have a say on deep-sea oil and gas exploration.

Changes have been introduced to the Marine Legislation Bill by way of a Supplementary Order Paper.

It means they won’t go through a Parliamentary Select Committee.

Aotearoa Human Rights Lawyers Association chair Edward Miller says the changes will allow exploratory oil drilling applications to be made and granted without notifying the public.

He says that gives mining companies a head-start in making their case about purported economic benefits, despite the practice being regarded as one of the most dangerous of the commercial drilling process.

Mr Miller says participating in public affairs is a fundamental human right which shouldn’t be traded for unproven economic gains.

We have not been doing much since it tipped up. Was it structurally damaged?

Barker has looked washed out since that same time.

Maybe one day we will know.

We need a state radio for democracy?

We don’t need state newspapers, and we have the Internet for democracy. (State TV is also anachronistic and unnecessary).

Concert Radio in the digital age could be cheaply run and funded by commercial sponsors and public donations, as public radio is in the USA. The sound archives could be run by whoever looks after the national print archives.

At the very least, Radio NZ should carry advertising and sponsorship. Why should the chardonnay socialists get advertisement-free radio at the taxpayers’ expense?

I guess Mr Beck and I have read the same book … a series of perhaps eight thick heavy volumes telling of the struggles within a world dominated by the Chinese with everybody, almost, living in buildings upteem stories high with the ‘free scum’ in the caves below … forget the author and titles but a great read. Obviously the west will try to retain its position but change is inevitable just as the Aztec, Roman, empires collapsed and the world moved on with its seemingly endless rotation of the sun …. that will end too …. but with perhaps twenty years left it will not be my concern.

My radio hasn’t been programmed for any commercial or community radio …. National and Concert are bad, or good, enough for me at present.

Fletch, recent events in Russia seem to indicate they are leaning towards a conservative Christian approach. Don’t confuse the imposition of socialist atheism with the beliefs of the people. The State may have been officially atheist but the people were not. Now days they can be more open about what they really think. The Church is pretty strong in Russia.

What is it? I thought that there would be a transfer to Labour from Green but this is weird.

Harriet above. Yes yesterday I went over to the Standard and made comment that the NZ dollar would fall shortly [ political fear ] I pointed to the 1984 experience of the 20% devaluation.
Harriet I was excoriated by this Standard psychopath Iprent also. He called me a Munter and a Wanker and a bottom dweller. I found it quite disturbing that that level of hatred and verbal violence exists in NZ blogosphere.
We have heard before that the Standard is for sycophants only. In a way this is why I disapprove of the Farrar rating system. It encourages only reinforcement of the general political outlook of NZ Nat , and belittles opposition.
I think we have to accept that the Standard is a nasty piece of work, and just keep away from it.

Because for years Labour and National have been largely indistinguishable. It doesn’t matter which one you vote for you get the same basic policies (centre-left, actually).

As parties cynically moved towards the centre – each on the correct assumption that their supporters have nowhere else to go – they may have increased their potential voters, but it was very soft support. They made themselves interchangeable.

Labour moving to the left means people now have to decide on the basis of actual policies; and there is never a shortage of bludgers willing to vote for a share of other people’s hard-earned income. Labour’s owners – the state-sector union employees – are banking on being able to bribe enough bludgers to get themselves across the line and so restart their own plundering.

Abbott has gone to ground. The new government won’t talk to the media about asylum seeker boats. Rather than a “cannot confirm or deny” approach they are adopting a three wise monkeys one.

The new PM won’t allow any of his Ministers to speak publicly without permission.

He claims he wants to get politics off the front page. Ironically, of course, his Secret Squirrel impressions are front page news.

Red does not base his views on a reasoned consideration of the specific issue. Rather he simply adopts the position he imagines a good Conservative should have. An example is his defense of Christianity, though he is a non believer. He does not understand the issues, or even care. He just wants to self identify as “Conservative”.

This is also why he is so intolerant. Even the smallest disagreement, on a minor point, will see a conservative labled a “prog” and prompt lines of abuse. He thinks others must be like him; 100% in support of the narrative or 100% against.

He really has no understanding of the issues which is why his contributions are so limited in scope. What he posts today is the same as yesterday, last week & last year. He inhabits a very narrow dark space.

My point on Singapore, which I have made again and again and again, is that the government there does not cultivate a welfare state the way NZ socialist governments do and there is something to be learnt from this. There is no welfare role (of any consequence) in Singapore. In NZ its about 300,000.

This is not only a huge drag on the public purse, it is a state of affairs that is very damaging to the democratic process. In particular, it is a situation that makes those who complain of a one party state in Singapore look like stark hypocrites

Therefore the Singaporeans are not of the same dependency mindset as too many NZers, and they like to provide for themselves.

This simple difference sees Singapore far surpassing NZ in every economic and social indicator.

Leftists do not want this success in NZ, for they know the trade off is that they will lose votes and political power.

Singaporeans are not free not to pay into compulsory medical savings accounts, nor are they free not to pay for the catastrophic medical care for others or for that of the poor.

Meanwhile, elswhere in Singapore:

The controversial Section 33 of the Films Act bans of the making, distribution and exhibition of “party political films”, at pain of a fine not exceeding $100,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years. The Act further defines a “party political film” as any film or video

(a) which is an advertisement made by or on behalf of any political party in Singapore or any body whose objects relate wholly or mainly to politics in Singapore, or any branch of such party or body; or

(b) which is made by any person and directed towards any political end in Singapore

That’s fucken freedom right there…

Oh and…

The scripts of all plays to be performed in Singapore must be vetted in advance by the Media Development Authority (MDA), which has the right to ban any it views as “contrary to the public interest”. Appeals against MDA’s decisions can be made to the Broadcast, Publications and Arts Appeal Committee (BPAA)

I guess it’s awesome to be able to live in a country where you are completely free, unless you are a fag or a commie or someone who just disagrees with the government.
