Big Bruv- Smith the best NZ centre ever? He is certainly a class act but in my short lifetime I have seen a few good ones (Joe Stanley, Steve Pokere etc) and the older guys all reckon Bruce Robertson was the man…

And I know I am going to get ripped to shreds for this but the two best centres I have seen in my lifetime weren’t All Blacks- Philippe Sella and Danie Gerber.
(*I know it is sacrilegious to even dare suggest players from outside New Zealand can be any good and am prepared for a torrent of abuse from the usual suspects…)

How about John Gainsford, Longknives? Or Mike Gibson before he moved infield?
Robertson has always been the benchmark for me. As far as wings are concerned, Williams in Africa on his first tour was outstanding.

Several years ago Transpower proposed ugly power pylon towers, some as high as 70 metres, across the landscape just west of my town. They were to be for a new 400 kilovolt line, which was completed two years ago. They were needed to ensure no breakages in power supply to our biggest city. The local objectors were over ridden as the ugly line was deemed to be necessary for Aucklanders.
So there is a fire in an Ellerslie substation and Auckland’s eastern suburbds are left in the dark.
I think the credibility of Transpower is at an all time low.

My provisional vote in Helensville was 359 votes.

My final vote was 420 votes.

So – you were wrong in your electorate prediction.

However – we didn’t have a formal wager – so I’ll let you off with a written warning (as it were 🙂

Used cannabis legislation to get at the hippies who were for peace and anti bombing. We follow America.Before that no one gave a damn.It took off after it became a crime.

Knives: I will go with the verdict of my peers, but as I see it Penny didn’t win either …She refused to specify how many votes she would get, but confidently predicted she would win the seat…she was only about 24,000 votes short…

If I had stuck with my original prediction of fewer than 450 (I revised it downwards after a particularly stupid post by Ms Bright) I would have won!

I remember Robertson well, a damn fine player he was. However, NZ back play of that time was hardly sparkling, Conrad Smith has all the skills of Robertson and more. Pokere and Bunce don’t come close.

Having said that, I agree that he is not the greatest of all time. The best I have ever seen (the First test I remember was in 69) would be either one of Pierre Villepreux, Mike Gibson, Brian O’Driscoll or Jason Little.

In fact if I think about all the players I have seen since 1969 then very few New Zealanders would make a mythical best ever team.

Shawn: Well said. Williams has been a criminal apologist for all of this career..he’s a lot of other things too – including being very litigious – …so I’m afraid I cannot elaborate…

He only ever debated me on three strikes once, on Radio Live…He was asked several other times, but funnily enough he was always unavailable…

Penny: You are correct, you never did actually accept my wager…and I never ever predicted you would get “less than 400 votes”, and I never would…I did however settle on FEWER than 400…some of us have to make a valiant last stand against the decline of proper English usage…

Pierre Villepreux was a fullback from memory – a prodigious kicking one at that.

Both Robertson and Stanley were better at putting their wingers (and fullback with Stanley) into scoring positions than Smith is but Smith has been handicapped by very average second fives.

More anti bohemian…..the forerunners of the Hippy movement. The anti marijuana laws in the states & NZ kicked off as a response to the 1925 Geneva Convention on Traffic in Opium and Other Drugs. As is the wont of all good control freaks everywhere the laws were tacked on to legislation being passed to control the use of opium……an entirely different drug.

There were few convictions as there was little marijuana use to prosecute. Nevertheless “mandatory sentencing and increased punishment were enacted when the United States Congress passed the Boggs Act of 1952 and the Narcotics Control Act of 1956. The acts made a first-time cannabis possession offense a minimum of two to ten years with a fine up to $20,000; however in 1970 the United States Congress repealed mandatory penalties for cannabis offenses.” *

The US laws became more punitive when, “In 1968 the United States Department of the Treasury subsidiary the Bureau of Narcotics and the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare subsidiary the Bureau of Drug Abuse Control merged to create the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs as a United States Department of Justice subsidiary.” *

In the USA, as in NZ, the efforts taken against the cultivation, sale & use of cannabis owe little to proof of actual harm to the community or individual. They do however, owe much to the desire of authoritarian social conservatives who wish to exercise control over everyone who doesn’t adhere to their narrow vision of “normal” society.

Penny Bright – Judith Collins, who is facing three separate inquiries

One inquiry – Former High Court judge Lester Chisholm will conduct a government inquiry into allegations former minister Judith Collins was part of a smear campaign against former Serious Fraud Office boss Adam Feeley. Collins quit as a minister on Saturday last week after emails dating to 2011 emerged saying she had been “gunning” for Feeley. The inquiry is required to report back to the prime minister no later than November 28.

Penny, what are the other two inquiries to which you refer?

In a reply to “Keeping Stock” you refer to a formal complaint to Police, made by yourself, raising the same matters for which Judith Collins resigned as a Minister – ie, as above.

So what is the other inquiry?

In an ideal world, leaving aside the political obstacles, what would you suggest?

– Reduce the size of the state (this should be a priority area anyway)
– Reduce income tax levels commensurate with the reduced size of the state
– Maintain existing ban on legal highs
– Beef up police enforcement of illegal drug consumption.

Something along those lines?

Just think. If the social conservatives had minded their own business & concentrated on living their own miserable God & Queen saturated existences the state could have stayed much the same size. Not only that the growers & peddlars of marijuana would have been denied the publicity that popularised the use of recreational drugs.

The 3s law was a law against violent repeat offenders. Note the word ‘violent.’ White collar crime is generally nonviolent, so there is no reason for 3s to be relevant to that.

High incidences of drug use are symptomatic of socialism.

Get socialism out of our political system and the need that so many poor souls have for mind altering substances will almost disappear.

As I have said before, once we get the welfare role down to about 10% of what it is today, and once we get the state likewise reduced and when our taxes are 10% or less of what they are today and the number of politicians reduced by 60% and government spending cut back to 20% of what it is today, then I will listen to those who whine about having no liberty because they can’t legally smoke weed.

Nasska and his weak naval gazing mates have whined about drug liberation while building the biggest most powerful highest taxing biggest spending state this country has ever seen. In a saner society this would be seen as abject hypocrisy underscored by a total neglect of issues that should be priorities for anyone really concerned with liberty.

That’s leaving aside their glorification of drug use and what impact that has on our children. Selfish stupid small minded narcissists.

My observations:

– I’ve never heard of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Who funds it and how are we supposed to assess whether the money is spent wisely?

Surely there are more important issues for them to be focusing on? If anything, this highlights yet again why we arguably have too many elected representatives.

Penny: You really are either very slow on the uptake or have a serious memory problem..When you last asked that same question I told you – as Shawn H has again – that the 3S law ONLY applies to offences of serious violence for which the punishment is 7 years or more in prison.

I was unable to get the Nats to agree to P manufacture being added (because it is implicated in so many crimes of violence).

If you had paid any attention to my posts over time you would have seen that I agree that white collar crime can be just as devastating, particularly on older people who have their financial security ripped from under them

Now DONT ask the same question yet again, or I may be forced to be really quite rude…

Don’t know that there’s much more growing around here than anywhere else JB. The days of a few hippies & unemployables cultivating a couple of plants along the river banks contributing much to the availability of dope in the cities are long gone. The tinnies your prospective employees buy at gang owned tinnie houses will contain a few grains of cannabis grown under gang supervision in commercial properties using lights powered by stolen electricity.

All the heroes of the NZ Police who jump out of choppers to confiscate a few miserable outdoor plants get for their troubles are hard ons from playing Rambo. The organised crime boys laugh & pocket the real money.

B Williams (1970) was far better than any other right wing in living memory

Sella would leave the Irish whinger in his dust.

Horan was good, Taylor was equally as good.

Lomu was limited, very limited but I have a soft spot for him

Lynagh, Davis, Gibson, Fox and Carter were/are all better than ‘Ugo.

I agree with Farr-Jones although his Kenyan successor was also damned good and Justin just a touch behind.
