For the public record, in my opinion, Labour Party MPs should NOT vote for the Countering Foreign Terrorist Fighters Bill which is being railroaded through the House today.

There is absolutely no need for this obscene haste to rush through this Bill, the real reason being to give the SIS more powers to spy on New Zealanders.

Tell us when you are going to investigate the ‘UNITE union theft, tell us when YOU are going to investigate the ‘Bottle of Wine’ episode, tell us when you are going to investigate the NZLP leadership farce. There are just so many ‘waiting’ for your attention.

Don’t just ‘do the words’ or focus on the Nats’, walk the walk, DO the investigations IMPARTIALLY, write the reports, follow through with the prosecutions. PROVE your talk.

Do that, and you’ll have lots of support (yes, even here), DON’T do that and your credibility withers even further on the vine.

And, BTW, pay your rates; it helps the image…

Does the court ask them if they want name suppression or are they given this protection automatically?
I understand they would desire personal privacy. If they are only little kids then they dot get to make the decsion obviously, but somewhere down the road they should be able to request name suppression to be lifted, if they wish.

You have to wonder how (in a communist society) some people became so wealthy. Is it moral to allow people who have likely gained wealth by violating the laws of their own countries to bring their ill-gotten gains to New Zealand? Or should the NZ government play realpolitik and just let the money in? (Like Switzerland in the late 30s and 40s.)

I always thought Kiwis were into the notion of “fair play”. If it is reasonable to assume that individuals have gained their fortunes illegally, then is it moral to allow them to park their money here?

Or does NZ not ask any questions, and just keep on smiling? After all, it’s doing wonders for the Auckland property market, which is keeping so many people happy.

Penny raises a valid point: there is a difference between “real corruption” and “perceived corruption.”

Ask a Kiwi, “Is NZ a corrupt place?” and they will say, “Oh no. We’re not a corrupt country.” And that is how the perception score is calculated. It’s based on image and perception; not on empirical measurement.

As for whether Penny’s assertion of NZ being very corrupt is true or not, that’s another matter. More research is needed.

Penny, I think that is a bit of an exaggeration. Every country in the world has corruption. I guess it depends on how you define corruption. Judges giving favourable treatment to people because of their social status is not technically corrupt but many people do would call it corrupt and I think they are justified in doing so. It is not just the judge’s fault but the politicians.

IGM –are you correct ? I thought it was a case of a policeman , who is a follower of Islam, had set it up in his “own time” and I’m not sure it said on the TV News I saw that taxpayers had paid. If I am correct ( and I stand to be corrected) then I don’t have any issues with a small mosque in Taihape –no different to any other place.

Labour’s election defeat inquisition has come up with a couple of headline explanations for the Party’s 20 September electoral disaster:

failure to unite behind party leader David Cunliffe

confusion over its “Vote Positive” slogan

The second of these is part of a continuing process of denying obvious shortcomings. The public wasn’t confused over the slogan. It simply didn’t believe Labour’s claim to be ‘positive’. Labour had spent 6 years opposing and subverting Government economic and social actions that the public had seen as being broadly necessary and / or positive for New Zealand. Then the country lived through a Labour election campaign that was as dirty and deceptive as any in living memory.

We voters may not be as clever as the wordsmiths of the Labour Party, but we recognised very well the contrived lie that was “Vote Positive”.

NZ doesn’t want to be seen as a haven for crooks with their ill-gotten gains.

Obviously there have been breaches of the immigration system here by these criminals. They have come here on the basis of being successful businessmen with their huge bank accounts. In actual fact the money has been stolen or aquired through corruption.

Here is some details for you

Mr Yan came to New Zealand in December 2001 and has been a permanent resident in NZ since 2002. In 2005, he applied for citizenship, but this was opposed by the Internal Affairs because he had two identities and was wanted for the alleged fraud in China.

He was also under investigation by the Department of Labour as David Cunliffe, the Immigration Minister at the time, was considering an application from officials to have Mr Yan’s residency revoked on similar grounds.

Mr Cunliffe declined to revoke his residency and asked officials to continue investigating the potential immigration fraud, according to documents released under the Official Information Act.
……
But proposed witnesses from China failed to travel to New Zealand for the trial to give evidence about his alleged false identity and Justice Timothy Brewer acquitted the businessman despite saying the evidence put before him “proves a situation that is highly suspicious”.

Most of the documents were false but were filled out by others, like Labour Party stalwart Shane Te Pou, on Mr Yan’s behalf.

Do you have any data on what proportion of National Party funding comes from “corrupt Chinese officials” as opposed to, say, “Chinese officials” or even “ethnic Chinese” in general?

Let’s say that 10% of the National Party’s funding came from “Class-A 100%-purely corrupt Chinese officials” than that still leaves 90% coming from other sources. At what percentage of funding should we have good cause for alarm? 1%? 10%? 25%? Would it make a difference if the Labour Party also received 10% of its funding from “corrupt Chinese officials”?

(It would be a delicious irony if corrupt officials from communist China were shown to prefer to fund the National Party as opposed to the Labour Party.)

The traffic gridlock in Auckland last Saturday was chaos.

This chaos had one cause, New Zealand Police.

NZ Police decision to investigate all major traffic accidents as “crime scenes.” and their subsequent
search for “evidence.” taking priority over clearing the scene and opening the road.

That is the root of the problem.

Is there any other country that routinely takes the view that a traffic accident is a crime scene ?

(I recall the senior police officer, who was criticised for his report after the tragic accident in Southland in
1995 where three women lost their lives saying, “Right. If thats the way they want it, thats what
they’ll get. From now on we will investigate all these accidents as homicide scenes, see how they will like that.”)

Any funding from corrupt sources is cause for alarm.
The fact that these people are allowed to come is a indicator of a level of corruption in the immigration process.
They are buying their place in New Zealand.
Do we really wish to sell citizenship so cheaply?

@waikatogirl: A few years back, Penny’s visage adorned a fence in the Eastern Suburbs and fortunately for me, a large truck obscured it from view as I approached a particular roundabout. But, as luck would have it, the truckie picked that moment to move off and when he exposed the said hoarding, all hell broke loose…. it was awful! My unsuspecting engine hit the redline as I laid a patch that would have made a boy racer proud / dogs howled / cats took off / birds flew away. A poor woman pushing a pram rushed to cover her baby. It was carnage…… all because Penny was staring at us – and fixed atop her head, in all its glory, was a dead skunk.

I hear some folk in the area are still traumatised….

From this morning’s edition of Granny:

Mr Little has also contracted Australian political consultant Mike Richards to review Labour’s parliamentary office and is due to receive his recommendations today.

“I am expecting decisions to rapidly follow.” Mr Richards had served as chief of staff to former Australian Labor leader Mark Latham.

Mr Little has held off on setting up his office and appointing key staff, such as chief press secretary, until that review is done. He has already indicated that Matt McCarten will stay on as chief of staff.

It surprises me that Little is even considering keeping McCarten on. The issue of Unite Union’s issues with IRD after the union (under McCarten’s leadership) withheld almost $150,000 deducted from staff as PAYE, Kiwisaver etc over an 18-month period either side of the 2008 election is well known. One wonders what Little’s attitude would have been had an employer of EPMU members done a similar thing.

Unite’s offending was especially hypocritical given that those from whom deductions had been made were staff of the union; an appalling abuse of power by Unite’s leadership. Perhaps Little thinks that time has healed the wound, and McCarten’s role in this sordid episode can be downplayed. It most certainly ought not be. It was a disgraceful episode, and by continuing to employ McCarten as his Chief of Staff, Little is effectively condoning his behaviour.

Whenever Andrew Little rages about “scumbag employers”, he needs to be reminded that his own Chief of Staff has form in that very area.

I looked up the IGM Taihape mosque story. It’s lovely that we’re getting that multicultural diversity thing, that inclusiveness and respect for universal values. Interesting tht so much funding came from abroad.

No. Hard to do when 80 per cent of National’s donations (about $3.5 million) come from undisclosed sources. There are numerous reports of Communist Chinese donations to the National Party. Peter Goodfellow (National Party President) is reported to have been in direct talks with the Chinese Communist Party. Why would that be happening do you think?

Also, you know it is the way things happen in China. Greasing the palms of politicians to open doors. Why would these people not adopt similar processes here.

The Herald tried to make a link between donations and the Crafar farm purchase. There is plenty of smoke around.

After watching one news coverage of the religious bloke who wanted the gay book writer to die, I think he was set up. This is what I would call doing a “Hager”. I don’t condone what he said, but if I emailed a very conservative synagogue asking them to review my pork recipe book I would expect a fairly heavy response. I think the gay bloke was sitting on a pile of crap books he payed a poultice to get printed. He thinks he needs a bit of controversy to move things along, so he trawls through churches until he finds a complete nutter who will react in the appropriate way. Cue horror, outrage, Campbell Live and anyone else who needs a bit of moral high ground to push their barrow, and the bonus is he probably moves a heap of books he didn’t deserve to.

New laws will make tax payers potentially liable for derivative losses

If the quadrillion dollar derivatives bubble implodes, who should be stuck with the bill? Well, if the “too big to fail” banks have their way it will be you and I. Right now, lobbyists for the big Wall Street banks are pushing really hard to include an extremely insidious provision in a bill that would keep the federal government funded past the upcoming December 11th deadline. This provision would allow these big banks to trade derivatives through subsidiaries that are federally insured by the FDIC. What this would mean is that the big banks would be able to continue their incredibly reckless derivatives trading without having to worry about the downside. If they win on their bets, the big banks would keep all of the profits. If they lose on their bets, the federal government would come in and bail them out using taxpayer money. In other words, it would essentially be a “heads I win, tails you lose” proposition.

In Northern Ireland , a bakery refused on religious grounds to make a cake with “Support Gay Marriage” on it. They are now being prosecuted over a matter of conscience .The irony is that queer marriage in NI is unlawful.

So the state that does not allow queer marriage is prosecuting a business for upholding the law of the land.

Agreed, that is certainly the situation, but in the applicant’s homeland, who is to know. The old saw about ‘The more you pay me, the more noble I’ll say you are’ applies throughout Asia and is effectively an art-form. On that basis therefore, who can tell? When you get politicians (and large bank-balances) involved at the ‘receiving end’, the combination that results, while certainly ‘doubtful’, is studiously ignored, and can, indeed, even be ‘manipulated’ further, especially if it is intended to reach a desired conclusion. Money will ALWAYS trump ‘good character’, especially at a political level…

But seriously, these things cost money. Real money. And success is rare. Deep, deep pockets are essential. So….. who has funded Ambrose (conveniently absent in Port Vila) ? Is it Hager, using his ill-gotten thousands from his fictional dirty politics scam? Or is it Dotcom? Or the NZ Herald? Or the mob at The Standard? Or one of Cunliffe’s unnamed donors? One presumes that Ambrose has met the solicitors costs to date, but now his (or whoever is underwriting him) costs will really increase. Tough!

I see that the so called journalist Bradley Ambrose is suing John Key for destroying his reputation.
Surely Ambrose brought any opprobrium upon himself by selling his unauthorised recording to the papers and ensuring Winston got a copy (for free?). The media have employed Ambrose UTU on Key all the election, which they lost, but will continue to do so to try and destroy National and Key.

I assume that the Printers Union – Aka EPMU – – well known to Chicken Little, are funding this action ?

Keeping Matt McCarten on as Chief of Staff is because he was crucial to the dirty tricks departmen for LP’s latest election campaign. You and I know how successful it was, but the LP and it’s new leader are obviously under a different impression 😉

As for reviewing the Aussie LP to see how they operate before implementing it as improvement to the NZLP, well that just leaves me speechless!

Why does our PM downplay the impact of chinese money in Auckland so much?

You just need to look at Auckland now, compared to say 1995.

There are so many more chinese and they have grown faster as a percentage in a city that was already growing.

Does the PM not think these people live anywhere?

He goes on to say…
“Responding to claims Chinese investors are a significant presence in the Auckland property market, Mr Key yesterday said the overwhelming bulk of Chinese at auctions would be New Zealand residents or citizens from “Pakuranga or Torbay”.”

True too, but many of these people are using chinese income to buy houses and the rich chinese who live here have far greater purchasing power.

I would not mind so much if the chinese were contributing to the economy by exporting and developing high tech industries.
