Rowan my comments were more nuanced that you seem to realise. The issue with Bain is finely balanced. So far as any miscarriage of justice is concerned, arising out of the Privy Council case he got a retrial and was subsequently acquitted. And he got legal aid and was able to have a top legal team on his case. Two QCs no less and many others. If it was that clear cut the Privy Council would have quashed the conviction rather than order a retrial.

Many of those mounted troops were drawn from the 1913 Massey’s Cossacks. For many decades the Left wing people have derided that force, as they injured several strikers that had been holding up the country’s exports of meat, wool and dairy. In those days wool was expensive, so the financial impact was serious.
But with all the stories about the war, 100 years ago, the matter of Massey’s Cossacks seems to have been overlooked.

The 1913 waterfront strike and resulting unrest is a tolerably well known part of NZ history. Among the commanders of the Mounted Rifles in Wellington was Andrew Russell, who went on to much greater fame as the very successful commander of the New Zealand Division in France.

Scott Hamilton posted at 11.44 of Maori casualties in World War 1:

Hundreds of them fought at Gallipoli and seventeen died in one day at Chunuk Bair.

The Maori contingent that served overses in World War 1 s numbered 2500 men, including 470 Pacific Islanders. Casualties included 336 men killed, and over 700 wounded.

New Zealand war dead in World War 1 (including 102 missing) 16,404; wounded 40,362. Without including the small number who served in regional units, Maori and Pacific Islanders accounted for 2 per cent of those killed and 1.7 per cent of those wounded.

Certainly bugger all – if any – served in the mounted infantry who are commemorated at the Western Australia memorial.

Didn’t our beloved ‘Tangata Whenua’ controversially bulldoze a War Memorial/Cenotaph somewhere once they had been given the land in a Treaty Gravy Train Handout? (It was a few years ago- But I remember Pita Sharples fully supporting the action)
Surely this proves they don’t ‘Do’ War Memorials?

And wasn’t David Bain going to be a World Famous Opera Singer? (The Paper-Run was just a ‘filler’ job seemingly)

Why would you have any affinity for war memorials or remembrance ceremonies Milky when it is your global socialist ilk that has undermined everything our forbears fought for in those wars? Destroyed NZ’s national character and replaced it with the UN socialist model. As you have done in every western country.

Before you showed up we had national character, an identity, now we just have global socialist mush masquerading as patriotism. Many of the young you have educated see ANZAC day merely as an excuse to binge drink.

You sound cynical. Here’s what was behind the Anzac memorial in Western Australia.

The original monument, at Port Said, Egypt, was paid for by troopers, Army nurses, and camel-mounted soldiers. Suez rioters destroyed it in 1956. The Australian and NZ governments then financed construction of a copy, and this was erected at Albany, Western Australia, overlooking the sound where the first Anzac troop convoy assembled. A replica was erected in Anzac Parade, Canberra, a year or two later.

The monument depicts an Australian trooper coming to the aid of an NZ trooper whose mount has been shot. The fallen horse sculpture was based on photographs the NZ Army supplied of Bess, the mount of Lieutenant-Colonel Guy Powles, father of NZ’s first Ombudsman. Bess was the only NZ horse shipped overseas in 1914 to return to NZ.

The model for the NZ soldier is Trooper Clutha Mackenzie, who was blinded at Gallipoli, on August 9, 1915. Clutha Mackenzie was son of the Scots born former NZ Prime Minister, Sir Thomas Mackenzie, who was NZ High Commissioner to Britain when his son was blinded. For a photograph taken by the NZ Army for the sculptors of the original monument, Trooper McKenzie was back in uniform and mounted on Bess.

Clutha Mackenzie was one of the NZ mounted infantrymen who (on foot, of course) reinforced the NZ position at Chunuk Bair, on Gallipoli. He was blinded by the very shell that killed the NZ hero and Chunuk Bair commander, Lieutenant-Colonel William Malone. Mackenzie, blinded, crawled to safety after suffering his head wound.

That’s about as close as the peak-oil doomsayers are going to get to admitting they were wrong.

My prediction is we will never run out of oil. Of course the total supply of oil is finite. But the lifetime of the internal combustion engine is also finite; in the not too distant future it will be replaced, whether by batteries, hydrogen fuel-cells, or whatever. We will cease needing oil long before we exhaust the available supply.

Jack 5 The Maori pioneer battalion were not allowed to fight in WW1, that is until things got a little tough at Gallipoli. After that they were back to pioneer duties in Europe, no picnic and some were gassed. It was of great distress to them not being allowed to fight in what was considered a ‘white man’s’ war. There are letters from their commanders pleading that the case that the had volunteered to fight. By WW2 the 2nd Maori Battalion was highest decorated NZ Division. Do some homework.

There is a (pictorial) record of all the East Coast men that served in NZ forces overseas.
A goodly number were lost in WW 1.

Someone may be able to tell us whether its fact or urban myths that NZ wharfies went on strike when the US marine division was leaving Wellington to fight the Japanese who at the time were our mortal enemies. The story goes they forced the marines to load their own ships and some material was left behind.

If Hitler hadn’t attacked the Soviet Union, we would have had more problems from the wharfies.

The writing was on the wall about the Bain case when the proceeding of a preliminary hearing for the JR were suppressed. The settlement deal is also suppressed. There is nothing the Bain team needed suppressed, but on the other hand the difficulties of the Crown’s position were self evident. Regardless, JC said she couldn’t put the case before Cabinet. One of the most ridiculous political decisions of all time. Cabinet don’t need protecting by a Minister of Justice, the executive has a purpose to consider all matters that might result in an Executive power being exercised, that is their job. At the moment the situation is as it should have been had JC acted in a proper way. There is no reason that a peer reviewed international study that concluded that it was around 98% certain that Robin Bain suicided will not be considered by Cabinet, along with the Giles finding and of course the Binnie report along with its well known recommendation. Some one blinked and common sense prevailed.

Is that why so many Indian troops fought in the British Army, mostly as infantry?

There were fears around the time of World War 1 that the Maori population was (then) so small and believed to be declining that Maori were in danger of extinction. That is why there was no conscription of Maori, and why attempts were made to keep them out of high-casualty duties.

There is no question the Maori Battalion fought bravely and distinguished itself in World War 2, and may have suffered the highest casualties of any NZ infantry battalion, but I’m not sure of your basis for it being the mostly highly decorated battalion in the 2nd NZ Division. On VCs? On all awards of bravery medals and mentioned-in-despatches awards? And if the brave men of the 28th Battalion suffered in the war, is there any point in measuring it by casualties or awards. If so, I think NZ air crew would have to rank higher on those scales. And what about Maori who served in other Army units?

As for your final comment on homework, do some yourself.

ooh don’t mention Dean Cottle! If people are reminded of Dean’s existence they may start to ask him questions about his conveniently timed OS trip.
AN OIA request also reveals Dean had told Joe Karam prior to retrial that he would not be attending, and that if he was subpoened, then “my memory will have failed me” (and laughed.)
The judge knew all this. Also , the Crown wanted to call Cottle themselves at retrial, but the Defence put the kybosh on that, and were prepped to have ‘Cottle declared a “Hostile Witness”

but Karam wouldn’t want anyone to know this so keep it under your hats people.

Service at Gallipolli[edit]

Increasing casualties among the Anzac forces during the Gallipoli campaign led to the deployment of the 461 man battalion. The battalion arrived at Anzac Cove on 3 July 1915. Here they joined the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and were employed as infantry soldiers. In 1917, the battalion was renamed the New Zealand Maori (Pioneer) Battalion.[3] After the attack at Gallipoli there was considerable criticism of three officers of the Maori Pioneers who were charged with desertion in the face of the enemy. The GOC General Godley, sent them home and broke up the Maori force when it was sent to France.[4] In France the Maori troops were interspersed with pakeha troops from the Otago Mounted Rifles who were used in the pioneer role after suffering many casualties at Gallipoli. The New Zealand pioneer Battalion existed from 1916 to 1917.

If I have the chance I may be able to find the letters I mentioned. And yes, certainly the most decorated Battalion in WW2.

Neither my nor my husbands grandfather were involved in the wharves.
Both were dairy farmers. My grandfather was definitely a National voter and I strongly suspect husbands would have voted blue too.
The Mounted Rifle soldiers were walked from the Waikato down to their departure in Wellington collecting soldiers (or farm boys) as they went.

And not only don’t you give details (medals etc and numbers) for your assertion that the 28th (Maori) Battalion was the “most decorated” battalion in the 2nd NZ Division, but you go further and claim it is “certainly the most decorated Battalion in WW2.”

(Have you seen all those medals the old Red Army veterans wear at the annual celebration of the “Great Patriotic War”.)

I don’t know about 35K over 14 years, it would be interesting to see how they came up with that figure.

However, by the time they get to college age, it gets very expensive to send them to school.

Fletch above mentioned how cheap stationery is – yes, it’s the cheapest part.

Laptops, which are compulsory for many children now at many colleges and at some primaries, cost $500 plus. Last year, we bought our Year 9 boy a tablet, that could have a keyboard clicked onto it. Ultimate versatility. Only, he cracked the screen at the the end of term 1 and it was going to cost approx $450 to get it fixed. So instead, we spent a few hundred more (close to $800 and got him a proper laptop). You can’t just get a cheap one, as it has to have a good, long battery and be relatively light, because it’s adding to extra weight in the school bag.

On the older boy, we paid $500 for a screen replacement for his laptop because the hinges had gone and the laptop was still fairly new (but out of warranty as it was more than a year old).

Calculators for the seniors are mini computers and cost $100. For the juniors, they’re a bit cheaper, I think $35 from memory.

Really sturdy (German made) school bags cost $180. Sure you can buy cheap ones, but you’ll be replacing them every three months.

Same with shoes, Clarkes cost $120. Like with bags, you can buy cheap ones, but you’ll also be replacing them every three months. You’ll be amazed at how quickly cheap shoes from the Warehouse or No 1 Shoe warehouse disintegrate.

Uniform – more and more schools sell their own uniforms and refuse to allow any competition, so the prices are abysmal. I was talking to someone a couple of years back at Postie Plus when they used to sell the uniform for the local college, when the college took control, put logos on all the uniform pieces, and demanded and checked that every child was wearing school sold uniforms, not the equivalent knockoffs. The effect on the prices was that at least $20 was added to every single uniform piece. So a shirt that might have cost $20 at Postie Plus, jumped up to $40 – $50 at the school uniform shop. Last year I spent $1000 (or more) at the school uniform shop buying uniform items for my youngest son, plus a few replacement items for my older son because his stuff had worn out.

Then there are the various books they want you to buy for the classes – more so at the older ages. I can’t remember how many books I bought last year – easily $100 worth.

I’m just so glad that this year that 1) my oldest son doesn’t need a uniform as Year 13s can wear mufti, and 2) my youngest son has all the stuff I bought from last year, plus larger stuff from my older son to grow into, and 3) most of all – no laptop and and calculator costs this year.

And “your understanding” is as usual worthless, Cottles evidence is unlikely to have made a difference other than reinforcing the true character of Robin, which had been long established by several other witnesses. Sad that you loons will go to such an effort to defend a individual who is, on the evidence guilty beyond doubt and also likely to have been involved in a sexual relationship with one if not both of his daughters.

Sad that you loons will go to such an effort to defend a individual who is, on the evidence guilty beyond doubt and also likely to have been involved in a sexual relationship with one if not both of his daughters.

Robin Bain was never put on trial Rowan, so the evidence against him has never been tested, let alone rebutted. Of course that doesn’t stop you making inflammatory allegations against a man who is not alive to defend himself; are you proud of yourself?

What an awesome effort from Ronchi and Elliot, Ronchi was exceptional and hopefully Elliott has secured his place in the eleven over the out of form Latham, so much for his haters who wanted the overrated Neesham, who at best is a part time bowler and a very average lower order batsman, his highest ODI score in quite a while was 17! His batting is grossly inferior to Elliot and his bowling only on par so hence not a hard decision to make!

So far as any miscarriage of justice is concerned, arising out of the Privy Council case he got a retrial and was subsequently acquitted. And he got legal aid and was able to have a top legal team on his case. Two QCs no less and many others. If it was that clear cut the Privy Council would have quashed the conviction rather than order a retrial.

Wowan, the the main thing to remember is that the Defence did not want Dean Cottle taking the stand for obvious reasons Just one slip by Cottle in a mine field of slip ups, under cross examination, could of easily gone against Bain.

Try impartially reading the Binnie report, he also found that none of the so called “evidence” against David stood up to BOP.
When you have done with the Binnie report try explaining how Robin was “murdered” in a way consistent with the evidence, ie hard contact upward trajectory shot, misfired bullet, replaced magazine suggesting that the first shot/attempt failed, it is ridiculous to suggest he cooperated with his killer and didn’t try to escape. But don’t worry you are in good company neither the crown or anyone else have yet managed to come up with a plausible scenario/explanation yet either!

How can he be so sure, given that he says he blacked out and cannot account for 20-25 minutes and why the inconsistency?

Do you still really think Bain should be compensated for this pile of rubbish ?

Maybe Guptill should be replaced if he fails to deliver a decent score in one of the remaining two games mind you Latham has been pretty piss poor to date as well, a good test player but yet to transfer it to the ODI version of the game, mind you he is young and will have plenty more chances to do so, Jesse Ryder would be a better alternative but I can’t see it happening so not a lot of choice for top order batsman, Ryder would certainly compliment McCullum though in terms of not getting bogged down and keeping the scoreboard moving, we can but hope we haven’t seen the last of him.

Rowan – Ryder is unlikely to ever play for NZ again. He’ll be nearly 35 the age of the next WC, and that’s even if he can lay off the booze and isn’t inclined to just pick up T20 contracts.
