I have always advocated taking in Iraqi and Syrian Christians including others persecuted by ISIS including Yazidis and some Shia. Hopefully we will have some Christians under our expanded quota one of which I believe you opposed !

A genuine refugee is one who has a bullet hole still bleeding from some part of his her body, one who has a camera phone showing his dead parents and siblings as everyone has one, they are half starved and have to crawl across the border in rags, and they have to say in English or German “I fought the bastards till I ran out of ammunition and all my buddies are dead. I’m here temporarily to get my health back and then I’m going back to kill them all-whoever they are – because you sanctimonious bastards won’t do anything.

do any of the majority of economic refugees look like that? How many are in uniform of the country they loyally support. Their country is at war FFS, 4 yrs of it, and they run away when their country needs them. Right or wrong.

I have an old paperback by the Venerable Fulton Sheen, “Life of Christ“, that describes the similarities and differences between socialism/communism and Catholicism in the preface. It can be summarised thus:

The modern world, which denies personal guilt and admits only social crimes, which has no place for personal repentance but only public reforms, has divorced Christ from His Cross; the Bridegroom and Bride have been pulled apart. What God hath joined together, men have torn asunder. As a result, to the left is the Cross; to the right is Christ. Each has awaited new partners who will pick them up in a kind of second and adulterous union. Communism comes along and picks up the meaningless Cross; Western post-Christian civilization picks up the unscarred Christ.

Communism has chosen the Cross in the sense that it has brought back to an egotistic world a sense of discipline, self-abnegation, surrender, hard work, study, and dedication to supra-individual goals. But the Cross without Christ is sacrifice without love. Hence Communism has produced a society that is authoritarian, cruel, oppressive of human freedom, filled with concentration camps, firing squads, and brain-washings.

The Western post-Christian civilization has picked up the Christ without His Cross. But a Christ without a sacrifice that reconciles the world to God is a cheap, feminized, colorless, itinerant preacher who deserves to be popular for His great sermon on the Mount, but also merits unpopularity for what He said on His Divinity on the one hand, and divorce, judgement and hell on the other. This sentimental Christ is patched together with a thousand commonplaces, sustained sometimes by academic etymologists who cannot see the Word for the letters, or distorted beyond personal recognition by a dogmatic principle that anything which is divine must necessarily be a myth. Without His Cross, He becomes nothing more than a sultry precursor of democracy or a humanitarian without tears.

So, the problem is that we moderns now see the Cross as Leftism, when all it’s just what Christianity has rejected as too much suffering and pain, while as Jesus has been turned in a nice guy. Pope Francis brings it all together, though not as eloquently as Benedict. But then Benedict (a theologian, and someone who answers questions in complete paragraphs rather than colloquial one liners) was always going to be a tough act to follow.

Lucia, FFS. Britain and the Soviet Union jointly invaded Persia (now Iran) early in World War 2. The Occupation forces were later joined by Americans. They would have had the final say on the Polish refugees.

Yes, that’s right, they would have had the final say. However, the important thing to note is that the Persians were very welcoming and helpful, unlike the attitudes being displayed in forums such as this, and in places such as Hungary.

Does your “FFS” cover the 4 million refugees in Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan, or are you going to concede on that point?

It’s ironic that the whole concept of helping refugees is to save individuals from persecution on the basis of their belonging to a particular group. But here you appear to be saying refugees should be denied help based on their belonging to a particular group.

MH,

That’s an impossible standard for most refugees, who will flee before it gets that bad. Even my Dad when he was a refugee, while almost dead from starvation, didn’t have any bullet wounds, nor did he fight the bastards, having neither weapons nor experience of combat as a 14 year old.

Generally countries who have multiple warring sides with the civilians in the middle are the worst places to be, and anyone fleeing from that situation, bullet holes or not, in my opinion is a refugee.

Nope kowtow we agree guns are really good at killing people.
The USA with its open carry and gun nut culture has over six times the guns death rate per capita than all other western democracy’s.
They have a gun problem of massive proportions compered to the civilized country’s.
It does not make you safer to have more guns available.
The last thing we should do is change our gun laws to be like them.

Maori make up more than half the country’s prison population. Mr Williams made the comments in Auckland at a public discussion about prisons this week. When asked if more Maori culture and language should be encouraged in prisons, he replied that New Zealand “runs on English”.

Labour MP Kelvin Davis, who was also on the panel with Mr Williams, said his comments were disappointing.

However look a little deeper.

The West backed the Arab spring, to do otherwise would have given the Islamist view that the West backs tyrants an obvious credibility. This led to the failed state outcome in Libya and Syria and the military coup in Egypt – albeit sanctioned by a later election.

Democratic regime change in Syria was only possible if the government consented, was removed by the military, or sufficient parts of the military were induced to join the rebel cause by western backing. When it became clear NATO would not guarantee victory there was the resort to an alternative option funding and arming resistance – something the Gulf states and Turkey actively participated in. Thus the West did not abandon the Arab spring in Syria after the regime used force to suppress them.

However this has led to protracted civil war and the relative diminishment of the democratic resistance compared to Islamists. Now there is no chance of a democratic outcome – the regime or Islamists will prevail.

The problem is that Turkey and the Gulf want the Islamists to win and that means al Nusra (al Qaeda in Syria) will with its ally Islamic State would rule Syria and north Iraq. They are also prepared to reduce Syria to constant civil war to block a Iranian Iraqi Syria Hizbollah Lebanon axis forming. This leaves the EU, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan dealing with refugees.

The Americans in making the deal with Teheran are taking steps to distance themselves from this scenario. But it would be hard to appear to be abandoning the democrats. Russian intervention is deliberately targeting the Free Syrian Army to give the West no dog left in this fight. So Americans can then face up to the new facts on the ground – the apparent helpless in the face of this occurring under Russian air bombing serves American political need for an out – albeit it one forced on them buy the Russians (and distress in Europe – caused by Merkels refugee intake policy, synchronised with Moscow?).

If the Syrian regime survives it will not be because the West supported the tyranny but because Russia did. This removes the Islamist meme threat that the West is the outside force supporting tyranny in the ME.

Yep. They’re worse. Columbine High School and the Aurora Theatre see to that.

In Wikipedia’s list of US states by population, they have a “comparable country” column. New Zealand appears once, alongside Kentucky. Very apt, too, given their connection to the thoroughbred breeding industry (their Bluegrass area, our Waikato).

Kentucky’s had a couple of bad ones. The Standard Gravure shooting in 1989 left eight dead and 12 wounded; Heath High School in 1997, three dead, five injured; Lafonda Fay Foster’s rampage in 1987, five dead (shot, stabbed, run over by car, trapped in burning car – gunfire just one of the methods there).

So in the Mass Murder Stakes (to continue the racing theme), New Zealand has put more trophies on its shelf than the US state most closely related to us in population and other areas.

I know I did say “pick any state”, which was careless and was bound to throw up a Colorado or some other outlier, say South Carolina, but I stand by my premise that New Zealand, with its strict gun laws, is no safer than comparable states in the supposedly murder-rampant, gun-happy USA.

It might help to consider more similar countries, alloytoo. I haven’t claimed that the US has the highest rate in the world. But if you are aiming for a country as violent as South Africa, Mexico or Brazil then you might think the US is doing fine.
If you compare it with other OECD countries, you might spot the anomaly.

I don’t know what you want me to concede on this, Lucia Maria. Jordan, a Muslim country, has certainly been very generous in hosting Muslim refugees, though it had to fight the Palestinian refugees in the Black September uprising in 1970-71 (they were trying to take over the country).

Lebanon for many centuries was largely a relatively prosperous and peaceful Christian territory, with a Druze minority, until the French, who had the mandate to govern after World War 1, expanded the borders to include more Muslim areas. The huge recent influx of Muslims has reduced the Lebanese Christians to minority that is probably less than 40 per cent of the population. But yes, it has been very hospitable to Muslims and others leaving Syria.

Turkey has a large number of refugees from Syria. However, given its discrimination against Christians, especially in its genocide of the Armenian Christians, and given its treatment of Kurds, including its own Kurdish minority, I don’t think Turkey can be held up as an example kindness to refugees.

It amazes me that someone would post that and think it is a good thing.
The problem with using that statistic is they have so many more guns per capita than the rest of the civilized world.
Gun deaths per person as far more telling than deaths per Gun when it comes to gun control.
I see old half a brain thinks that he is not opposing sane gun laws when he opposes Obama efforts to rain in the USA insane gun problem.
That is conservative thinking in little boxes for you.

You’ve incorrectly extrapolated here. While he was a Polish refugee in Persia, my Dad came to NZ in 1950 at age 20, from England.

It’s very simple. Earlier you said,

It’s a very similar question to other questions asked over many months as to how many Syrian refugees Muslim countries are taking in. Maybe not questions that you yourself have asked, or maybe questions that you have asked. But the tenor of your question reminded me of those others, which is the assumption that no Muslim countries are taking in refugees, when they are.

At the moment Turkey has 2 million refugees and as a matter of interest Iran has 250,000 of them.The Armenian Genocide was in 1915 and it did not stop at the time Greeks massacring Turks > Before I forget Shia Iran / Persia has historicallyy often given shelter to Armenian Christians.

And please don’t forget the Bosnian while your at the first Lebanon Civil war 1981-2 that saw the exodus of Christian Manorites cannot be all balmed on the Muslim community there but owes more to the actions and behaviour of Phalange Christian militias that witnessed massacres like this ,

Griff, at this point I do not see a gun ban working in the U.S. They’ve had guns for too long now. That horse has bolted. If they were to ban guns, the ordinary citizen would comply and the only people left would be the criminals with guns that they obtained illegally.

It just won’t work.

The gunman today was aged 20 – not old enough to have obtained the guns he used legally (the age limit is 21). So he would still have done what he did, regardless. This is what you get with a ‘gun-free campus’ with one unarmed ‘security guard’.

Just by the by – when I’m traveling in the USA and I need a comparison state for NZ, I do tend to use Colorado – close enough in area and population to give people a good general idea. Some assume we’re an island like Hawaii.
If NZ were a state of the US, we’d be 8th or 9th in area (from memory).

Someone who comes from a war-torn country. Someone who is grateful for any assistance given when they reach a foreign shore. Someone who complies with the laws of the host country.

Only about half of these “refugees” are from Syria. Joining in are a ragtag mob from all sorts of dysfunctional countries, including the Balkans, taking advantage of the mayhem to pass themselves off as refugees. The Syrians and Afghans in this exodus are not directly fleeing the war, many have been living in safety in camps in Turkey and elsewhere. They want a piece of northern European welfare.

Take the guy whose dead son being found on a Turkish beach led to the photograph which produced an outpouring of sympathy around the world. Was he a genuine refugee? No. He wanted some work done on his teeth. He’s probably the world’s first “dental refugee”.

Anyone who reads just the headlines (and Rachel Smalley’s stuff) about this migration has to be touched by it. But anyone who delves just the tiniest bit below the surface can see it for what it is. It’s Europe, at the urging of Angela Merkel’s Germany, inviting in a tide of invaders. Europe is committing suicide.

Two people have been arrested this morning following an incident at a Cook Street address on Monday afternoon where a group of men entered the premises claiming sovereignty of the location, police said.

The 66 and 50-year-old men are now facing charges of Trespass, Forcible Entry and Assault and will appear in the Auckland District Court tomorrow.

Countries that Refugees (illegal immigrants) pass through on their way to Western Europe to collect benefits. I will post them in order of transit.

Turkey, Greece, FYROM (Macedonia), Serbia, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic.

Alternative routes.

Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia.

None of these countries are at war and are all considered safe for refugees the problem is they are poor and people must work to survive with the exception of Austria.
