If piroshki are anything like pierogi, then this contraption, which I’m going to try out tomorrow when I get into my pierogi making for Christmas, might help: Big Pierogi Maker.

  Piroshki and pierogi are similar in shape and various dumpling fillings
  but piroshki have a risen yeast dough and are baked.
  
  Pierogi (boiled, unleavened dough) are probably the same as Russian vareniky.
  
  The hubby always folds up the delicate little piroshki…(takes a couple of hours!!!).
  I’d much rather make big ones… or just make a big pie..
  He only likes the lethal filling of onion, boiled cabbage and boiled eggs…..

Christmas is a difficult time for vegans:

This weekend, the famous Christmas turkey gets swapped with Tofurky (fake turkey, usually made from tofu and formed into loaf shape). The mere fact that the Tofurky makers have included turkey in the name is strange given meat is taboo. I’d personally rather eat cardboard.

I’d probably draw the line at eating cardboard – but this “Tofurky” sounds a bit underwhelming when it comes to feeding a family.

  One of the daughters had a funny reaction to some medication a few years back and couldn’t cope with dairy products for a time….
  My Xmas usuals of
  trifle with custard and cream, or pav with cream, or icecream were off the menu….
  so I checked out some vegan recipes and created a slimy dessert with mashed frozen bananas and jelly.
  She was cured by next Xmas.

Bleak Christmas for group of motel dwellers in MSD’s emergency housing scheme

A group of Auckland families are facing a bleak Christmas in cramped motel rooms that are costing taxpayers thousands of dollars each week.

The NZ Herald article (once again) quotes extensively from unhappy beneficiaries but (once again) doesn’t tell us much about their personal circumstances and why they’re in taxpayer-funded motel accommodation. It seems unlikely that they suddenly found themselves homeless. Were they previously in taxpayer-funded housing, and if so, what happened?

The article quotes a sickness beneficiary. He thinks his motel accommodation is “a huge waste of taxpayer money” (that’s gratitude – how nice) and says: “For $800 a week I could be anywhere. I could be living in the Metropolis building” (that’s unrealistic – good luck with that dream).

As for the “bleak Christmas” (NZ Herald description) – Auckland City Mission to Host 2,000 Guests at New Zealand’s Largest Christmas Lunch.

Pete George has covered a recent High Court decision in a very interesting blog post:

The Christchurch High Court has issued the first Public Protection Order the Public Safety (Public Protection Orders) Act 2014.

The respondent 25 year old Glen Anthony Douglas was deemed to be at serious risk of repeat sexual offending so is to be detained for the protection of the public. Douglas has just completed a 3 year sentence for sexual offending against a minor and has a 10 year history of compulsive offending.

This means Douglas can be held indefinitely but can get the decision order reviewed.

Pete quotes from the court decision and this extract caught my eye:

… It may be harder under a PPO to achieve meaningful progress in treating and helping Mr Douglas, but if his response under that regime warrants reconsideration then the path is marked by the legislation. Only to some degree is this in his hands as he suffers from deficits in his behaviour and thinking which are not his fault, but a product of the multiple physiological and psychological influences on him. …

WTF – apparently Mr Douglas (to give him an honorific that he probably doesn’t deserve) isn’t responsible for his behaviour and thinking because of “the multiple physiological and psychological influences on him”.

I’m sure all of us have daily battles with “multiple physiological and psychological influences”, but none of us (hopefully) commit sexual offending against minors.

  Is a polite way to express “as mad as a swarm of bees in a tumble dryer “.
  As we can not really hope to cure such a smegged up individual it may signal an intention by the head shrinkers to incarcerate the kiddy fid for the rest of his natural .

Did anyone know Christmas is the descendant of the old Roman festival of Saturnia which used to run from 19-25 Dec inclusive and is the celebration of the minor solstice?

Romans declared it a crime-free period so you could basically do anything including rape, murder or whatever, so they did. There was a King of this festival normally a convicted criminal who was allowed to do anything he liked during the festival but was usually killed afterward.

Fact of the day. Maybe I’ll start a series.

  Christmas is a myth.
  The roots of this seasons celebration are a lot wider than early Christianity.
  Our forebears in the west celebrated the winter solstice dec 22 when winter turns the corner towards spring.
  A time of gathering of family’s and feasting just as we still up hold today.
  For my family god and the Jesus zombie have no relevance to the days activity’s.

    It’s interesting when you think about it the roots of Christmas are well known to the educated which in ancient times meant the priests mostly and yet we have this satanic festival that forms the main part of most Judeo-Christians aka Westerner’s entire yearly worship these days but in older times it was a big drawcard to the organisation..
    
    When you consider two of Satan’s (which is of course an anagram of Santa) names are the Slanderer and Deceiver then it’s an interesting question isn’t it, as to is this entirely coincidental.

Christianity is a religion that allows

Free Will

That is why christianity never had any problem
with adopting some of the customs of
the various peoples in the world.

Call them Pagan if you like.

Free will forces you to think

I know it is hard for you – to think

but allowing people to celebrate traditional festivals is not in itself anti christian

The Teachings of christ can be condensed into
the 10 commandments and treat thy neighbour
as thy self.

Sure there is some other stuff but on a practical
daily level that is it.

The Free Will and thinking thing has had
quite a positive effect on European Christian
Societies.

As a christian to apply christian doctrine you have
to think there is not a huge book of rules
that tells you exactly what to do.

Thinking like Christianity is
no longer fashionable

esp not on this forum

And if you need evidence just look around
and compare
