From a domestic politics perspective the answer to this one is a no-brainer – English and National need to get as much distance from The Donald as possible.

He may have a few fans here on Kiwiblog, but to the wider NZ electorate Trump is extremely unpopular and electorally toxic. English should be publicly and unequivocally disagreeing with Trump’s more controversial actions in the strongest terms he can without creating diplomatic damage. Garner is absolutely right that indecisive fence-sitting like his response to the Muslim ban would be a massive gift to the opposition.

  First of all there is no Muslim ban. I just travelled to America yesterday on an NZ passport.
  Was not stopped at the border, but did get full cavity search. But that’s to be expected, I even wore nothing under the caftan in anticipation.

        Staying neutral is not a viable strategy when the opposition is trying to drive a narrative.
        
        The Muslim ban is a perfect example. English initially said nothing, and the opposition successfully framed that as tacit approval. By the time he did say something it was too little to late, and he just ended up looking indecisive.

  I think you are right. Here on Kiwiblog most of the commenters (around 70^ maybe?) seem to be enthusiastic about Trump, but from my conversations with general people he seems to be viewed either as a laughing stock, an outright disaster or at best as a slow motion road crash which is both horrifying but too fascinating not to watch.

    Actually, from what I see in the comments sections in negative Trump Facebook posts by the NZ Herald, 1 News, Breakfast, etc, most Kiwis are not fooled by the negative news media coverage on him. They seemed to be more switched on than I thought.

    There are numerous issues on which, for years, Kiwis and Europeans have prided themselves on being sophisticated and wise and superior to ignorant Yanks. This is just the latest manifestation.
    
    Actually on many of the very issues on which we thus pride ourselves, it is the Yanks who have simply not lost their age-old common sense, unlike us in this era of triumphant cultural marxism. For example, look at housing affordability in all the “ignorant redneck” States of the USA. Why do they get it right? They have the intelligence to understand that “allowing sprawl” is less harmful than priced-out young people and housing bubbles. We don’t.

Far from being a coordinated conspiracy, they are probably guilty of over-sensationalising in order to keep their readership; but on the subject of Trump, there are many documented video clips and soundbites which actually show what a deranged insane jackass he actually is.       You really can’t see left-wing the bias of the media? Really? In the U.S, 90% of the media donated to Hillary. And they were sure never as critical of Obama, or watched his every move the way they do Trump. I wouldn’t say it’s a coordinated conspiracy (although in the past there was the “JournoList” private newsgroup where they used to congregate and share their talking points), but yes, they all do hate him and are looking to be critical of every little thing he does. Some have even tweeted about his possible assassination – and these are official media outlets.
      
      If you can’t see the bias then you’re living in an alternate universe. There is no way they would have treated Hillary like this, and you know it. They would have lauded her every move.

I watched them last week as the whole panel including Hillawy, J-Tay, the gay weather guy and the bogan chick from Fair Go all solemnly declared compulsory Maori in schools was the way to go and it was embarrassing that it wasn’t already.

No wonder nobody watches broadcast TV anymore.

      I have noticed some Maoris (not exclusively though) do do sign language , it tends to be from the back of a police car.
      
      I am confused though as it isn’t Maori , it’s not even Anglo Saxon which you’d expect given our history, it’s the Greek middle finger.

    90% of the country speaks English, and only 3% speaks Maori. I somehow doubt they would use it as a primary means of communication, either (which is the whole purpose of a language, isn’t it?)

  Agree totally. As far as morning news programmes in NZ is concerned there is only TV1 at the moment – but I cant stand the group of poofs and queers and mentally challenged. So Ive taken to switching the Sky news, then having a laugh at CNN, then another laugh at Fox (who do offer a bit more balanced set of thoughts – like the fact that Mexico built a wall on its southern border) and then the BBC – who seem to have lost their way. But at least these outfits arent throwing a bunch of poofs and vacuous loud mouths at us.
  Actually Sky news is best – and Im going to miss it when SKY tv gets cut off as I am having a deep theological argument with them about their false advertising and have decided not to contribute to their financial input until they solve a problem that they say they cant solve (but which I can)

I got an email from the IRD saying that I had an eDocument to view and telling me I should log onto myIR.

But when I did, there was a message saying that the service is unavailable until 7 February.

So I replied to the original email asking why I was being asked to log onto a service that is unavailable.

And, guess what? I got a reply say “This email box is not monitored and Inland Revenue does not respond to emails received through unsecure email. If you have an enquiry, please login to myIR to contact us.”

Pure genius.

  IRD is being over-cautious here. IRD is genuinely concerned about sending sensitive client information in an ordinary email so wants you to look at it via its e-document system. However where the email information is generic its approach is over-cautious. Could be a blunder anyway since IRD sends a email newsletter to business taxpayers now and again and could have used that channel without compromising privacy.
  Will be interesting to see whether things function normally Tuesday morning or whether things run off the rails.
  As February 7 is an ‘important’ tax date having a system shutdown immediately prior to this is rather a dumb thing. Easter would have seemed better. Alternatively the February 7 deadline could have been extended to the end of that week.

  Shock horror he was part of an angel investor syndicate including the govt, that made a lot of money, after taking an enormous risk, on NZ tech start ups. And shock horror the govt only got back it’s money + interest.
  Hello morons… that’s how the govt assists NZ businesses FFS. Often it is in the form of a give away (a grant) or sometimes the equivalent of a loan (that no one else will give them).
  The govt gets some successful businesses that grow the NZ economy (in this case ‘XERO’) and increases the tax base. And all this was under a Labour govt.
  Our business had such a loan from the Uni of Auckland business school. Which helped us take our product to export, we then paid the money back (with interest) and that money went on to assist another company
  
  There is nothing underhanded about this, if the Hoorald doesn’t like it it should call for a halt to all business investment in NZ by govt otherwise stop being fuckwits just to score cheap political points

In summary, the article is all about how good it is that Social convention (or lack of same), contraception and abortion rights means today’s “empowered” female no longer needs to remain chaste and virginal, hoping to be chosen by Mr. Right, marrying and having children while young, consigned to a life of drudgery and housework (we’re not in the 50s now remember 🙂 ) . Now the liberated young woman plays the field, hooks up, makes out. She has countless temporary relationships that won’t interfere with education or career. Then, when she comes to her early thirties she’ll look to settle down and have her 1.5 children with a suitably cucked husband.

But I always ask myself is that what most women really want? Somehow I doubt it. Maybe I’m wrong, but, just as the male is biologically programmed to spread his seed far and wide before eventually settling down with his love mate, the female is programmed to treat her reproductive capabilities with great discretion. Both genders are programmed to have children and most, especially women, are likely to feel unfulfilled in their absence. Glamorous career or not.

Now, empowered by an active sex life from her late teens onwards, and having established a glittering career in HR or Marketing (only dykes are of use in any other jobs) she’s now, having moved into her thirties, ready for phase two of her plan: To choose an appropriate mate and start a family. Aha! But theirein lies the rub. Because the years of maximum sexual attractiveness and fertility are now rapidly disappearing in the slipstream behind her. Those years, characterised by casual relationships in which she probably held the whip hand (metaphorically speaking) have not prepared her well for long-term commitment. And another big shock: She’ll find that a very very high proportion of desirable men have already made their choices and settled down.

It happens all the time especially in big cities where I know lots and lots of attractive clever young women who realised late – too late – that they really did want a normal family. But by that time they are unprepared for it. Their skills revolve around being sexy career women, and when they lose the “sexy” part they’re left with nothing but a career — usually not a particularly impressive one in HR or Marketing. Within a few short years, years that fly by with horrifying speed, they are, “past it”. Embittered, barren, hollowed-out husks, asking themselves where it all went wrong.

Meanwhile her male counterparts, having enjoyed her body while it was at its most sexually desirable, are now settled down with someone else. Someone who’s not as liberated as our heroine. And to crown it all the reality of innate capabilities and commercial pressures have meant that he’s now overtaken her…..she who thrived initially on afirmative action but who just couldn’t cut it as the going got tougher and tougher and as her enthusiasm dropped on realising that career was a poor substitute for a family.

Then realising they’ve got nothing to fulfill them, they turn into embittered cat ladies marching against Trump’s “misogynism”, as their hope of meeting a rich successful businessman has past them by.

  There is so little incentive (in the media) for a woman to raise children. Moreover, how can a single income support a non-renting family in this day and age?
  I think we have lost something essential in the last 30 years. There is something wonderful about having a stay-at-home parent who will always be there for children.

    The present two-income families typically rely on grandparents for help with things like baby sitting, picking up children after school, being there when children are ill during the week, and picking up many other little routine tasks in the past performed by a stay-at-home parent.
    
    What happens when the present generation of children grow up? Will their parents (from present-day two-job families and by then grandparents), be able to help them in turn?
    
    Perhaps not if the politicians succeed in making people work until they are 80 before getting superannuation.

    It is one of many hypocrisies and contradictions on the PC left, that “the solo mother” is sancrosanct, yet urban planning that drives up house prices is also sancrosanct. And while the lefty watermelon misanthropes quite like the idea that decent young married couples can’t afford to breed the families their parents and grandparents did, what of the solo mum?
    
    I suppose the taxpayer is obliged to provide a State house for her, with as many bedrooms as number of kids she chooses to have.

    Your point seems to imply that men don’t want to get married and settle down.That’s an interesting point, but it does not sit with my personal experience: Almost all of my friends are either married or in long term relationships and have been for over ten years.     You probably need several groups to have a credible strike capability.
    
    Given our size, it would make much more sense to strengthen our ground-based defence capabilities. We could also host and defend our allies’ assets.

    To get an air force that would last anything longer than the first 15 seconds of a confrontation with modern fighter would require more money than anyone in NZ would be willing to spend.
    
    Let’s face it, the most frequent mission for the Air Force is looking for lost trampers, so increasing the number of SAR helicopters would be more cost efficient.

      Even with cover from carrier-borne fighters, it is very hard for an invasion fleet to stop losing ships to missiles launched from low-flying fighter-bombers.
      
      If the Argies had had more Exocets they would have annihilated the Brits trying to get the Falklands back.
      
      NZ could at least have a credible deterrent. Assuming no threats ever, doesn’t make sense.
      
      EDIT: in fact one day we could face something as simple as a non-government-actor invasion flotilla of yachts, and be unable to stop them. When WW2 broke out, the Germans were able to sow mines in daylight in NZ waters with minimally-armed converted freight ships. It took more than a year to actually get some bomber planes – from the Yanks.

Matt Nippert from the Herald branch of the Media Party is continuing to ramp up the attacks on NZ citizen Peter Thiel.

It would be interesting to see phone and e-mail logs of communications between Nippert and Labour’s attack puppy on this, Iain Lees-Galloway. There is no way that this is anything but a coordinated political attack on Thiel, to get at the National government (even though it was under Labour that Thiel initially gained NZ Permanent Residence).

Let’s not forget that Nippert was one of the leading lights in the Panama Papers “scandal” last year, which did precisely zero damage to its targets. He worked closely with none other than the darling of the Left, Nicky Hager; the man who believes that he can disseminate anyone’s private information, but cries foul when held to account.

Let’s also not forget that Nippert has been previously alleged by Cameron Slater as being “donkey-deep” along with David Fisher in pushing the Rawshark hack story and the Hager book. Nor should we forget that there was a very strong suspicion that all roads in the Rawshark case led to a rather large house in Coatesville, occupied at the time by a rather large German man with previous convictions for hacking.

“Dirty Politics” is definitely not the sole preserve of the Right, and the likes of Nippert, Patrick Gower and Katie Bradford have made it pretty clear that the gloves are off in the run-up to 23rd September. But will it work? It certainly backfired in the Land of the Free…

Then there is the question mark over the identity of the recently deceased secretary of the Refugee Council.
        
        Martin van Beynen in the Christchurch Press today has a balanced article in which he says Thiel’s citizenship is a good deal for NZ. (The other side I don’t agree with is that van Beynen suggests each rich immigrant should have to sponsor a swag of refugees.)

The reality is that the whole idea of hard-out feminism has f***ed certain women over badly. Seen it all my adult life.

They have their career, their awesome life, their unbridled sex, travel etc and then discover in their early to mid thirties that… all the good men have long gone – selected carefully and scored by the more sensible girls back when they were in their mid twenties.

All that’s left for them to pick over is the tattooed ‘bad boys’ who were so attractive in their late teens and early twenties but are now essentially useless, although they go to the gym a lot, drongos who earn minimum wage and guys who are already divorced and have baggage.

The successful, smart girls have their bit of fun early, get a qual whatever but get it out of the way so as to concentrate on the important job of finding a solid, dependable dude to support them through the most important part of their lives.

I am not interested in debating if she should have been released, but her ‘health’ is just wishful thinking on her behalf. Maybe the regime she is trying is making her feel better but she is not cured and is not getting better.

Well I wonder how many of the people that are voicing their opinion on equal pay and opportunities for woman in NZ will acknowledge the fact in figure released in the last day that the numbers of women employed in our Country are now the highest in NZ employment history. Figures released by Statistics NZ now show women in employment have climbed from 64% to just over 70% at the end of December 2016.

The Christchurch Press has a report today about an Iranian student at the University of Canterbury who can’t get to a family wedding in the United States because of Trump’s border ban.

The Iranian says Trump’s ban is a “kind of resistance against the changes the world is seeing” – globalisation – and that’s Trump’s ideas are a kind of resistance against these changes.

“But I am very optimistic. I believe they cannot resist for a long time.”

The way our MSM pushes multiculturism demonstrates that Twitter isn’t the world’s only echo chamber.

Incidentally, the Iranian’s study in NZ interesting. He is in his third year of studying for a Ph.D. on Media and Communications. Surely that wouldn’t qualify him as some sort of expert to get residency in NZ. And surely NZ taxpayers aren’t footing some of the bill for such a crap qualification.

ps, the same thing happened to African-American abolitionist Frederick Douglas, who attended an anti-slavery meeting in 1860 which was broken up by “a mob of gentlemen” who screamed insults at the attendees, took over the room, and drowned out anyone who tried to speak. They pushed the attendees about. Douglass was most shocked by the failure of the mayor of Boston to protect the meeting. The gathering was “broken up and dispersed by the order of the mayor, who refused to protect it, though called upon to do so”.

Douglas later wrote a short article titled “A Plea for Free Speech in Boston” part of which reads –

No right was deemed by the fathers of the Government more sacred than the right of speech. It was in their eyes, as in the eyes of all thoughtful men, the great moral renovator of society and government. Daniel Webster called it a homebred right, a fireside privilege. Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power. Thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, founded in injustice and wrong, are sure to tremble, if men are allowed to reason of righteousness, temperance, and of a judgment to come in their presence. Slavery cannot tolerate free speech. Five years of its exercise would banish the auction block and break every chain in the South. They will have none of it there, for they have the power. But shall it be so here?

After all the arguments for liberty to which Boston has listened for more than a quarter of a century, has she yet to learn that the time to assert a right is the time when the right itself is called in question, and that the men of all others to assert it are the men to whom the right has been denied?

It would be no vindication of the right of speech to prove that certain gentlemen of great distinction, eminent for their learning and ability, are allowed to freely express their opinions on all subjects – including the subject of slavery. Such a vindication would need, itself, to be vindicated. It would add insult to injury. Not even an old-fashioned abolition meeting could vindicate that right in Boston just now. There can be no right of speech where any man, however lifted up, or however humble, however young, or however old, is overawed by force, and compelled to suppress his honest sentiments.

Equally clear is the right to hear. To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker. From Australia : Maths set to hold back jobs in big data

A 30-year decline in the rate of senior students studying mathematics has put Australians at risk of missing out to foreigners in securing high-paying, in-demand jobs analysing big data, including working on a cure for cancer.

Maths is just getting too difficult to study in the senior levels of school in Aussie, so many kids are opting for either the easier maths or just no maths at all. Same thing is happening here in New Zealand.

Renowned quantum physicist Michelle Simmons, one of the nation’s leading scientists, used an Australia Day address in Sydney last week to decry attempts to “feminise’’ the high-school physics curriculum by replacing maths formulas with essays, labelling it a “disaster’’ that had left students unprepared for university.

This already happens in NZ, higher level physics is full of essays and explanations. Back when I was studying it in the 80’s at school, it was pretty much all formulas.

“There are no female or male disciplines or skill sets,’’ Dr Allen said. “Math is math and anyone, from any background, and with varying strengths can make contributions. It is imperative that we have both diversity of people and ideas in maths.

I have a soon to be 16-year-old son who has been placed in the easier Maths with Stats course at his local college because his marks were not good enough last year to put him in the Maths with Calculus stream this year. He is my 2nd boy to go through NCEA Maths, and quite honestly, from what I have seen, the NZ Maths curriculum and testing regime at all NCEA levels is horrendous – especially when compared to University study of mathematics which is just really nice in comparison. But by that point, many students who would have been capable have been turned off maths as a subject.

With my 16-year-old, some understanding of some really basic algebra would have made all the difference for him if it was picked up quickly enough, but it wasn’t. And the curriculum just raced on to insane levels of difficulty that really required a high level of understanding of so many concepts that kids just can’t pick up unless they are given time. And the testing is becoming focused on problem-solving rather than mathematical fluency, which just becomes frustrating and impossible for kids that have just learned how to do something before they are expected to problem solve with it.

Just more ranting into the void, I know this won’t do anything. With my 2nd son, he’s getting extra lessons in algebra from me. Not that he wants them. Funnily enough, I was talking to a mechanic the other day who was very concerned about his son’s maths abilities (his own dad is a programmer), so has bought all the books but is having trouble getting his son interested enough in doing the extra work. I just told him to focus on the algebra – that’s what makes or breaks a higher level of understanding mathematics. And that’s what schools aren’t doing, but then it’s not really their fault.

  I was having a discussion about this with a colleague yesterday.
  The question is whether you want to test Physics understanding or the candidate’s maths ability.
  Explaining the concepts and applying those concepts to a novel situation (the typical NCEA Describe and Explain question) is designed to test understanding without maths, as it is often the maths which holds students back.
  It is getting the balance between an essay based exam (which the Mechanics, Electricity and Waves papers are not) and it being an applied maths test which is difficult.
  
  My issue is that whatever maths is being taught, it is not ‘useful’ maths (to me as a Physics teacher), so I have to teach students how to re-arrange formulae whereas in the past, I didn’t need to.
  
  I will have a look at some past papers and see if I can determine the balance between calculations and explanations.

    From what I’ve seen of both my boys is writing based subjects turn them off. So many subjects now incorporate far too much writing. Surely understanding could be tested for in other ways, such as multi-choice questions?
    
    As for rearranging equations, it seems the maths teachers don’t really want to teach this either. I tried with my 15-year-old last year (in the short amount of time he was interested enough to cram for exams), but ended up just leaving him to use the “triangles”.

Teletubby Mahuta would not cut the mustard:
Donald Trump has angered feminists all over again, after a new report revealed that he has told the female staff of his administration that they need to always “dress like women” when at work.

According to Axios, who spoke to sources inside the president’s team, Trump requires all of his employees to “have a certain look” and “be sharply dressed” at all times.
