  That may bring relief to the Washington careerists, but what of the real working people who want jobs? If we had a new PM who decided to clean out the public service and make it more efficient, that PM would be crucified by the media. There are so many leeches sucking on the public tit, supported almost entirely by a compliant media, that Trump faces as almost impossible hurdle.

The situation in the USA has gotten out of hand. There is only hate and rogue government activists trying to have their will and probably have a global nuclear war.

    I watched the whole coverage on American Samoa TV. There was a two week delay. The integrity of the proceedings was impressive.
    
    That is what is lacking now. Any President has the right to expect loyalty and honesty in those serving him or her. One of the first things that will happen when Prince Charles succeeds will be the immediate swearing of loyalty by family and the highest officers of state to the new Monarch. This is not just the English Royals family traditions. Any doubt that it could not be taken meant at least no place at Court or immediate removal. The breach of such oath actively or implied was an invitation to war or an appointment in the Tower.
    
    At the top of government actual loyalty still has to be required. The digital age has implications too. Journalist can write what they like in the sanctuary of their own computers but dissemination of opinion or a statement, actual news or not affecting the operation of the head of State may be an implicit act of treason or war against the head. There cannot be a an unfettered right to impugn the integrity of the HOS that is to deny the headship and there cannot be two kings. One must remove the other. The right to govern is the right to be able to govern and it is the people who are governed so the whole state is affected by any disturbance. Such disturbance may also offer opportunities for external enemies to act as well. Imagine in Tudor England a purported herald on horseback in a town square reciting genealogies to show the King was not rightfully on the throne. That is no different: factual truth is irrelevant in the wrong forum but disturbance of order is not.
    
    Why is this not obvious to the Americans? This applies across all societies both in time and place. It is even manifest in animal society.

        “Enforce” what? Loyalty? Good luck. Presidents, especially unpopular/polarising ones have always struggled with that. What would you suggest? Throwing those whom they consider disobedient in jail, or dismissing the entire public service?
        They are, after all, a democracy with constitutional safeguards, plus also the practical problems to confronting an intransigent bureaucracy.
        
        As per the Commander-in-Chief who wrote to Union General George B. McClellan, when he refused to advance his army of the Potomac against Confederate General Robert E Lee’s Army of Northeen Virginia:
        
        “If you don’t want to use the army, I should like to borrow it for a while. Yours respectfully, A. Lincoln.”
        
        And others around here such as tom hunter were warning, before Trump took office that as a tolerate-no-disloyalty-or-questioning business executive, he would encounter the same problem that Truman predicted former-army General Dwight Eisenhower would encounter when he became President:
        
        Truman said “He’ll sit right here and he’ll say do this, do that! And nothing will happen. Poor Ike—it wont be a bit like the Army. He’ll find it very frustrating.”
        
        So Trump was warned, but he said he could deal with it. Waiting…

Was this a wise investment?
I was advised by a former crew member (now sadly deceased) of this rustbucket that any prospective passengers seeing what there is below decks would soon change their minds.
And it’s a bow-loader, a configuration not really suited to pounding into Cook Strait southerlies.
What happened to the old-fashioned concept of buying purpose-built new vessels, or have we been taken over by the used import mentality?

  Last time the Railways built a new ferry it was arguably almost a disaster. The price paid for this one would have reflected the condition and at a guess would have been around 10% of the cost of a new non-rail ferry. I guess the ferry was put on the market by the owners and railways risked losing it in 2020 (presumably no right of renewal) if it did not buy the ferry as the second hand ferry market is going through a lean cycle.

After failing to establish the actual ownership of the vehicle (that would have cost about 3 bucks – I didn’t research that either) the desk jockey fills his ‘writing’ with stuff trawled from social media.
That is just stalking. Creepy, creepy stalking.
This article even starts a sentence with that blatant admission of journalistic incompetence –
“It is unclear whether …..” (translation: I can’t tell from my desk and I’m too lazy to get off the chair so I’m making this up)

Is it just me or are we seeing the destruction of the USA by itself – self flagellation appears to be the watchword.
The world led by Putin are waking up every morning with a larger grin on his face that the previous day.
Do you imagine that Russia and China do not know everything that goes on in Washington and their pony the Washington Post are trying to recoup their Nixon story.
It is very sad to see the numerous geriatric, very rich Congressmen, and Senator, men and women, prostrate and wet themselves because they do not like the man the Constitution voted for. He is not one of them.
In fact I do not like him but that is irrelevant. I have not like some New Zealand Prime Ministers and have met a number, but they have been duly and correctly elected.
These people believe that they are the gift to the Country – not the President elected under the Constitution.
It is laughable if it were not serious of the degrees of confidential information being leaked by senior people who are paid to run the departments of the White House see Comey now ratting because he lost his job at which even Hillary said he was incompetent.
Obviously some people are being subporned by outside interests probably by blackmail or money – the root of all that is the USA and has been for many years – over there they talk in Billions of dollars – the rest is petty cash outside Washington.
Having worked with a number of USA companies offshore I am not really surprised. I saw top Executives fighting between themselves on a one up basis out sheer arrogance. Was fun to watch at the time but has consequently moved in a sad way now.
God Bless America ! – nobody else will.

  Don’t disagree that since Watergate the attempt to crimialise the policy differences of your political opponents has been a lazy-default setting, with the press willing to stoke, or even initiate that story. And leaking ? Well, Daniel Ellsberg who leaked the Pentagon Papers never went to prison, indeed he was treated as a hero, whereas Nixon’s plumbers did serve time. And arguably even the famed “Deep Throat”, Mark Felt leaked not for any altruistic patriotic reason, but because he was passed over by Nixon to replace J Edgar Hoover’s as Director of the FBI.
  
  However, the POTUS is not the same as our PM. Much more powers, more like (as the framers of the US constitution envisaged) an 18th Century monarch, who needs checks and balances and limits in their exercise of power. Arguably what is happening now is how they planned those checks and balances to work…

With dozens of Japanese and New Zealand flags lining the street outside his official residence, it was perhaps fitting that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe described the two countries as “flagbearers of free trade”.

After the spectacle of Abe’s meeting with Prime Minister Bill English, including a guard of honour complete with an Imperial guards clad in white and equipped with bayonets, the TPP’s flag was also flying high.

English described his meeting with Abe as “better than I expected” when it came to the fate of the free trade deal.

Speaking through a translator, Abe said the countries would continue to work closely together with the aim of “early realisation of TPP”.

For his part, English praised Abe’s leadership in reviving the deal, after Japan’s initial reluctance to carry on with a “TPP11” following the withdrawal of the United States under President Donald Trump.

“At this time of international uncertainty, it’s more important than ever for outward-looking trading countries like New Zealand and Japan who state their principles clearly to demonstrate our commitment to international trade and regional economic integration.”

One sign of the determination to get the deal through is the reluctance to change the original text, with English saying renegotiations would undercut plans to have it in force by the first half of next year as originally intended.

“For those who want to see it actually happen early then there’s no question, as I put to him that there can’t be any more changes than some technical changes to allow for the implementation without the US.”

This is great news for New Zealand. Many of the objections to the text of the TPP were due to the participation of the US, so in many ways it is advantageous not having the USA as part of TPP11.

There is certainly huge potential for exporters to benefit from the progressive removal of tarrifs from Japan, and better access to Japanese markets.

What will be really interesting now is to see how Labour responds, and whether the absence of the US from TPP11 will actually see them revert to being supportive of free trade as they were in the latter days of the Clark era.

In fact the Massey guy was very balanced in his views, but of course the sound bites on the 7.30 news update cherry picked the worst scenario of his interview. US governance is a lost cause and has been for several decades. Its been slowly declining since the Reagan administration ripping itself to shreds aided and abetted by pollies and Federal employees all ignoring the principles of good governance in order to achieve their own selfish agenda.

The great irony not lost on students of good governance is the principle that pollies and state employees all serve the citizens acting in the best interests of ALL citizens putting aside their own partisan agendas in order to achieve good governance.

Ultimately as we saw with Rome and other recent events that dare not speak its name for fear of Godwins Law when good governance breaks down societies fail ans crumble.
IMHO the US is at the tipping point and unless sanity is restored to Washington very soon Us governance will collapse followed soon after by its civil society.

Citizens are not required to love their rulers but they have to respect them. To avoid civil wars we have developed processes allowing periodic orderly change. That has been hard won over a long time. The present oppose, oppose, oppose is a reversion which take the USA back again. Out of civil wars come opportunities for external enemies to intervene. It’s very militaristic and “boot-camp” like.

Makes sense – people only get into prison after a long chain of poor decision making. If you want to fix them then you need to re-program them to make better decisions.

They cut the prisoners off from their families and the outside (unlike us who encourage connection to the outside). This makes sense – their offending is somewhat a result of their outside environment and they need to be removed from that environment to be able to reform. Keeping prisoners connected to the environment that partially caused their offending just sets them up to fail.

Their recidivism rate is about half ours, so something is working.

  I talked to a Thai chef who’d overstayed his visa in Japan by about nine years and was eventually locked up six months or so.
  He didn’t mind the experience at all, he said. Thai prisons, from what I’m told, are brutal. So maybe that was what he was comparing it to.

I am already seeing signs of that with exciting issues arising. There seems to be a new activism afoot and I’m not sure it’s all locally sourced. National is governing soundly as well as able. That means that they may appear to be doing “nothing much”. Any change takes time, knowledge, experience and planning. “The Family Court is failing to protect women and a Royal Commission of Inquiry is needed, a group pushing for changes to the court says.
The Backbone Collective said the Justice and Courts Minister Amy Adam’s dismissal of its report on what it said was the failure of the court to protect women and children was “hugely disappointing.”

The Backbone Collective was something I had not come across so I checked out their website to see what they were about.
Here is an example of some of the gems on offer:
“The Backbone Collective respects Māori as tangata whenua and Te Tiriti O Waitangi as the founding document that guides relationships between tangata whenua and tauiwi. We acknowledge the harm done to Māori through the colonisation of Aotearoa, the loss of Māori land, language and culture. In hindsight I should have known better than to look.

  In Family Court proceedings for some, if the other party was not hung, drawn and quartered the applicant was not satisfied. From experience I know the Court to be essentially fair to all including children individually.
  
  The Court facilitates the settlement of difficult issues of rights and costs as between the parties including the children like schooling with shared custody. The Court may commission expert reports and appoint lawyers for each child. It has awarded custody of a 14 yr. boy to his 20 yr. old married aunt on the aunt’s application because the boy refused to go back to his estranged parent after a holiday visit.
  
  It would be hard to improve the Court. The judges like all in NZ are excellent.

      I’ve been in many Courts in NZ and the judges have met the test of excellence as judges. They too are human but they sorted out the issues and made fair determinations which were equitable. It’s very rare for a judgment to be out of line with what other judges have come up with.
      
      I have been involved in Family Court proceedings 3 times. When families split sometimes it’s the only way to settle. The outcomes are not guaranteed and I have known a judge to have skilled outsiders asked for assessments and reports. That gives flexibility to the Court and independence from the parties.

House of Cards new series airs 30th May, so should be a good story. It will be interesting to see how the writer will be able to turn a series based on the Clintons, to be used against Trump. President Frank Underwood, much like Hillary, is a scheming and ruthless political individual, who will do anything to retain power. Even the most deranged anti Trumpist could not see the present President as a long term schemer, because he reacts off the cuff. Anyway, it will no doubt be good entertainment.

We may see the spread of “2-generation households” in Auckland. These have been mainstream in Japan for decades.
It works like this. The adult son marries and agrees to live with his parents. The old family house is demolished. The son pays for the building of a new house on the site. The new house is designed for the two households to live under one roof.
The house design has the following features. On the ground floor, there is the old parent’s bedroom(s), their bathroom, laundry, main kitchen, dining and living room. On the upstairs floor, there are the young couple’s bedroom and two children’s rooms, a small kitchen, toilet, and small living/dining room.
The idea is the younger generation have their evening meal with the elderly parents, but each family has a measure of privacy.
The stay-at-home daughter-in-law will look after the elderly in-laws until they either die or require full-time nursing care beyond her ability.
A generation later, the cycle is repeated. (You really need to be able to get along with your in-laws.)

    Chinese workers can come to Japan to supply labor. Each one of them will be on a 1-year (renewable) work visa and will be sponsored and guaranteed by the Japanese company employing them. The directors of said company will be legally liable for law-breaking by said Chinese employees. At the end of their work contracts, the workers will leave Japan. If a Chinese worker wishes to remain in Japan, he will require a guarantor and sponsor.
    Imagine if New Zealand had employed such a system for Pacific Island laborers in the 1960s and 1970s.

    This is one of the weaknesses of the Japanese system. In a traditional Japanese family, the eldest son inherits all. However, this comes at a price. He in return must look after his parents in this life and in the next as well.
    “How do you look after your parents after they are dead?” I hear you ask. The answer is that you live near the family grave and you regularly visit it at the appointed times of the year. You are also involved in the local temple (which manages the family grave), you participate in working bees, and you engage with the periodic local ceremonies. All this is expected by your extended family (who will be watching).
    In reality, most of the care-giving of elderly parents is undertaken by the daughter-in-law. This hapless woman is obliged to live under the same roof as her mother-in-law, who will always take the side of her beloved son (and he take hers).
    The sagas and long-running conflicts between daughter and mother-in-law are legend in Japan, and have been the principle pillar of many a grand soap opera on Japanese television for decades.
    There is nothing quite like it in New Zealand. As the great NZ poet-philosopher Frederick K. Dagg wrote on his return from the Osaka World Fair in 1970, “You don’t know how lucky you are, girls. You don’t know how lucky you are.”

Andrew McCarthy from National Review makes the point that if giving veiled orders or suggestions is an obstruction of justice, then Obama is actually guilty of what Trump is being charged with in the public sphere.

In April 2016, Obama made a public statement that he didn’t think Hillary was guilty and implied that she shouldn’t be charged. In July of that same year, Comey used almost exactly the same wording as Obama when he let Hillary off the hook.

McCarthy argues that Democrats are projecting – wanting to charge Trump with the crime that Obama actually carried out.

On April 10, 2016, President Obama publicly stated that Hillary Clinton had shown “carelessness” in using a private e-mail server to handle classified information, but he insisted that she had not intended to endanger national security (which is not an element of the relevant criminal statute). The president acknowledged that classified information had been transmitted via Secretary Clinton’s server, but he suggested that, in the greater scheme of things, its importance had been vastly overstated.

On July 5, 2016, FBI director James Comey publicly stated that Clinton had been “extremely careless” in using a private email server to handle classified information, but he insisted that she had not intended to endanger national security (which is not an element of the relevant criminal statute). The director acknowledged that classified information had been transmitted via Secretary Clinton’s server, but he suggested that, in the greater scheme of things, it was just a small percentage of the emails involved.

Case dismissed.

Could there be more striking parallels? A cynic might say that Obama had clearly signaled to the FBI and the Justice Department that he did not want Mrs. Clinton to be charged with a crime, and that, with this not-so-subtle pressure in the air, the president’s subordinates dropped the case — exactly what Obama wanted, relying precisely on Obama’s stated rationale.

Yet the media yawned.

Of course, they’re not yawning now. Now it is Donald Trump, not Barack Obama, sending Comey signals. So now, such signals are a major issue — not merely of obstruction of justice, but of high crimes and misdemeanors.

Trump is said to have told Comey, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”

Other than telling us that Comey replied, “I agree he is a good guy,” the Times provides no context of the conversation. Its report gives no indication of whether the memo provides such context.

On its face, the statement does not amount to obstruction of justice. Trump could be said to be putting pressure on his subordinate, just as Obama was putting pressure on his subordinates (Comey included) last April. But assuming the Times is right about the memo, Trump did not order Comey to drop the case. In fact, Trump’s statement is consistent with encouraging Comey to use his own judgment, with the understanding that Trump hoped Comey would come out favorably to Flynn.

It is not frivolous to infer that Trump’s statement to Comey was a veiled order. If that is your interpretation, though, you cannot avoid the conclusion that Obama’s public statements were also veiled orders not to indict Clinton. Up until now, veiled orders have not been thought the equivalent of obstruction of justice.

Can anyone explain why TV Three were pimping World Vision for donations to help the save the children in Africa who are dying through lack of nutrition. While this is tragic why should we donate when this media outlet created stories of children going hungry in our own country with also saying our government does not do enough for families in NZ and then ask for funds to help other countries. TV Three should be putting their money where their mouth is before fund raising for others.

I have noticed that for the fourth consecutive month the Diner’s Club statement has a due date of payment on a weekend day. Apparently this is done so that people who pay on the Monday are deemed to have paid late and the reptiles can then charge them interest at a rate in excess of 19%.
Does anybody else find that sort of business practice deplorable?

  I had one of those extortionate cards back in the seventies. They ended up with it back in their possession in about a hundred pieces.
  Then they kept sending me application forms to get a new one. They only stopped when I filled one in, saying that I was unemployed and that my last job was as a salesman for Spherical Iron Products Ltd. , cannonball manufacturers, Wharf Road, Patea.
  That fixed them.

Immigration NZ has announced details of its plans to impose refugees on Southland.

Bureaucrats have told Southlanders that Wellington City (population about 191,000, regional population half a million) receives 250 refugees a year so 100 a year is a “realistic allocation” for Invercargill (population about 50,000, regional population about 70,000). Muslim refugees will come from Afghanistan, Syria, and Myanmar (Burma). Refugees for the south will also come from Colombia.

There are three to four million displaced people in Colombia following the insurrection by the Marxist-Leninist FARC and narco gang warfare.

Let’s hope the Wellington civil servants thoroughly check the Colombian refugees. We don’t need Leninist guerrillas or narco gang agents in the South Island.

Just had the loathsome Oxfam at my front door- Took me ages to get to the door (as recovering from a stint in Hospital) and was greeted by some weirdo in a bright jacket opening with “Do you give anything to Charity?”
I told him that I do and politely told him Oxfam was not one of my “Chosen Charities”
“Well why not? We help children in New Zealand and all over the World?”
I again told him I give to selected Charities and Oxfam was not one of them. I politely asked him to leave and he again asked “Can I ask why not?” Good luck getting any $ with that rude attitude asshole!..

*I should have asked him how much of my donation would go straight to Hamas..

Rotorua people have just one month to practise their pukana and get ready to take part in a world record haka attempt.

    Sorry can’t help you on that one Reid – if I said a name I would only be speculating (and breaching DPF’s comments policy).
    
    I can tell you that there are a couple of highly leveraged mezzanine finance companies that are extremely marginal at the moment through exposure to apartments/off the plan developments. Their expected costs have soared and they’re caught in a classic liquidity trap.
    
    You would have thought NZ learned after the Finance Company fiascos of 7-8 years ago but no. I suspect that is why banks have been told to ~~lend recklessly~~ reduce lending standards in order to keep the house of cards afloat so rising property prices can bail them out and the “dumb investors” can wear the losses.

        No. In Israel, they do things differently. The video shows four officers staging a mock anti-terror operation in a park close to Tel Aviv. The team roar in on motorbikes, firing their rifles at the “terrorist”.
        
        As he lies badly wounded, the officers empty their magazines into him from close range. In Israel it is known as “confirming the kill”. Everywhere else it is called an extrajudicial execution or murder. The children can be heard clapping.
        
        It would be helpful to change things like that, wouldn’t it. Isn’t it a shame people like stupidboy disagree.

        Jews are taught a lot of rubbish about non Jews and a victim complex is instilled in them at a young age to justify the mistreatment of others.
        
        There are plenty of Jews who speak out about it too, but not enough to bring change.

Some may recall DPF posting last month about the Kapiti district councillor with the unusual excuse to the accusation of indecent assault: his penis was too sore after his recent circumsion for him to be pressing up against a woman in the manner alleged.

Manawatu community calls to stamp out domestic violence

Community groups are calling for people to step up and stop family violence in Manawatu. About 40 people took part in workshops about family violence on Thursday as part of a violence education day, run by the Manawatu Abuse Intervention Network (MAIN).
