Some of the best comedy is only a shade away from the truth – The Office, Yes Minister and so on. I suspect at the time, some MPs and bureaucrats privately didn’t like the borax being poked at them.

Jonah from Tonga is a pretty typical product for Australian TV; there’s much worse of course.
Google ‘Housos’ – a parody of life among social housing folk – and everything is on the table. If it were screened here there would be national outrage.

Of course, the real reason the YHAs in Auckland are falling over is because central and local government are finding out there’s no point building loads of new houses when the infrastructure (roads, schools etc) are already at collapsing point and people can’t get to work to service their giant mortgages

YHAs and subdivisions in West Auckland have been put on hold by ACC because of this. They held a public meeting about it a couple months back

      If a packet of cigarettes was 2/6d (25 cents?) in 1967, but, say, $20 today, then you could compare how many packets of cigarettes you could buy on a week’s wages in 1967 with how many you could buy today (in the same kind of job).
      
      For example, $20 a week in 1967 = 80 packets of cigarettes = $20 x 80 = $1,600 a week.
      
      (Cigarettes are not a good example due to the tax.)

        Cigarettes in western countries are taxed to death. You can buy a packet of 20 here in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for under $2.
        But average income for working class smokers is $200 a month

    Prices in Japan have hardly budged in 30 years for some items.
    Back in 1985, a can of coffee from a vending machine cost 100 yen. Last year, it was 120 yen (and that includes 8% GST that didn’t exist in 1985). For the SAME product.

        Collville. No hunting, except for hunting the Aurora Borealis at Chena – Fairbanks. Maybe fishing at Talkeetna. Big jetboat takes us on wildlife tour. Train is most of the travel. Marine tour out of Seward. Fly to Homer for 4 days. In June 2015 we had daylight 24/7 – never saw a star. This time it is in Sept. And then there is all the fun in Honolulu there and back

      That would have been a bit later than me. I was a paper boy both with a round or city stand for some years.
      When I was 11 I organised a strike one afternoon while selling the Evening Post at the CPO. The issues I think were aggrieved paper boys’ conditions and pay; we got 10s/week + tips for 6 days. we could take home a pound some days but tips if any varied a lot.

      In around 1955 in London as a morning paper delivery boy at 10 shillings a week we had to sort each houses papers from about 8 available.
      On a weekend they were double sized broadsheet which you couldn’t carry on one delivery – sometimes took three deliveries (along with please fetch me a packet of Woodbines on your way back). Had to deliver before 8am as had to go to school.
      Christmas tips around 5 pounds – great once a year.
      Easter Sunday and Christmas day off.
      Rain and snow irrelevant the papers had to get through.

  Funny thing is that I can’t find any record of the court trial or proceedings. Only copies of this on other denier sites and some reference to the fact that it’s all fake.
  
  By the way the “corrected” graph is actually one created in the 1980s as a schematic (no scale) and is in the IPCC report.
  
  But I shall take one for the scientists and get downticked into oblivion by the deniers. No, don’t thank me, it’s all water off a ducks back to me.

    Actually, the comments below the article are more enlightening than the actual article. It may well be fake, time will tell. I still think there is a bigger issue and that is the argument around CO2 saturation. https://skepticalscience.com/saturated-co2-effect.htm
    The comments that follow the skeptical science link must be read, although they go on for ever.
    I have read much of this, I still can’t get my head around some of the detail. I still think we are looking at the wrong source for any warming and that is the problem.

    Michael Mann filed his SLAPP 6 years ago…. and in Feb 2017 asked for a stay of proceedings.
    “Michael Mann moved for an adjournment of the trial scheduled for February 20, 2017. We had little choice because Canadian courts always grant adjournments before a trial in their belief that an out of court settlement is preferable. We agreed to an adjournment with conditions. The major one was that he [Mann] produce all documents including computer codes by February 20th, 2017. He failed to meet the deadline.”

After succeeding in getting the plug pulled on the Hawkesbay dam the Greens have now set their sights on the Waimea Plains Dam just out of Nelson to have that mothballed also. This is just the start of the sabotage from the Greens if the coalition from he’ll succeed.

    While as Trump’s speech in Poland was the wrong speech in the place that commemorates the disaster that was the Warsaw Uprising where Poland was completely fucked over with Russian-controlled Red Army standing by.
    
    To talk about Islamic terrorism as being the major threat by Donald Trump who then has the gall to suck up to Putin in the way that he did, makes my stomach turn.
    
    Poland is 100x safer in a strong united EU than she is by herself with Russia looming in the background because that’s what Trump and those behind him envision when they want to take down the “liberal” EU leaders.

What an amazing act of generosity:

Wellington is to get new $50m children’s hospital paid for by millionaire property developer Mark Dunajtschik.

The philanthropist will pay for, build and gift the hospital to Capital & Coast District Health Board (CCDHB).

Almost 30 years’ old, the current children’s hospital has been deemed not fit for purpose

“We’ve been working on a long-term plan for child health services, which included a new hospital but building wasn’t going to start for several years. Mr Dunajtschik’s generosity means we’ll get the hospital much sooner,” CCDHB chief executive Debbie Chin said.

The current hospital was the first of it’s kind in New Zealand, and each year more than 30,000 children passed through its doors, including the 4000 or so babies born there annually.

Existing child hospital and outpatient services – currently housed separately – will be merged in the new hospital.

“This amazingly generous offer will have such a big impact on the children we look after, their families and our staff,” CCDHB chair Andrew Blair said.

One curious coda to the RMA debate that concluded last week was that the Opposition parties plus ACT and United Future all voted again during the third reading debate for amendments that would have abolished Rural Urban Growth Boundaries and allowed the financing of infrastructure bonds paid for with targeted rates.

The amendments were defeated by National and the Maori Party.

The irony of a Government that has railed against restrictions on land development by councils voting against removing those restrictions should be noted. And also that the proposal for infrastructure bonds was backed by the right-leaning New Zealand Initiative and voted for by the Greens and Labour. Strange times indeed.

    It is their job to be prudent with money. Roads and footpaths not fizzy drinks and fags.

  Well it is hard for a lot of young people starting out.
  In the past parents would usually help their kids with a deposit.
  For those with no parental help, they turned to the state for a few years until they could buy their own place.
  Doesn’t work for many Maori and other Polynesians FOB….too many kids and the oldies don’t hand over money…they expect the kids to hand it over.
  BUT …the young ‘uns raised here are usually smart enough to only have 2 kids and like other new immigrants prepared to adapt, they do well.

Both Russia and China, each in their own way, are assisting the challenge to the US presence in South Korea.

For Russia, the alliance is tactical – they want similar Chinese regard for their sphere in Europe, so side with Chinese ambition to remove the American presence in Asia.

The ICBM escalation is a response to Trump saying American allies should defend themselves more, and for SK and Japan to get their own nukes (if worried about NK/China).

Russia and China are testing the new POTUS, Obama warned him this would be the most difficult problem he would face. Not just because it was escalating but because it would be how Russia and China would test his isolationist American first approach.

This could end with a peace to end the Korean war, involving the peninsular being nuclear arms free and no foreign bases as the centre-piece and no doubt economic aid from the south. The north would lack an enemy (challenge its polity of paranoia) and while advantaged economically – the public would in any era of new openness become aware of how far behind the south they were.

    That’s somewhat irrelevant. Given the US’ actions (practice nuclear bombing runs & invasions) plus it’s history of regime change, even the most sane leader would be doing precisely what Kim is doing.
    
    This isn’t about NK at all. The recent rhetoric and threats to China about “doing something” confirm what I always suspected. The US is being challenged on it’s world dominance (exceptionalism, hegemony etc) and is fighting back.
    
    This is all about China. They aren’t using military means for challenge but rather economic control – this is one of the key purposes of the One Belt One Road initiative. It’s going to be an interesting (and scary) path to see how this all pans out.

        then F-in-law and step M-in-law became seriously ill…
        “What are we going to do with the poodles, if your folks die,” I asked the husband, one evening.
