‘Kang Huang and wife Yan Zhang have had their name suppression lifted in a $50 million case brought by the Serious Fraud Office.

The identities of two other people charged in the case – Richard Chen and Zongliang Jiang – were first revealed by the Herald in December.

The SFO charged the quartet last year. The alleged offending took place between December 2011 and October 2015 and involves 76 properties and loans of more than $50m.

The quartet are defending obtaining by deception charges over information provided to secure mortgage finance on dozens of Auckland and Hamilton properties.’

Is it just me or did anyone else miss the names like Robert, James, Jessica, Sophie, Annaru, Mihi in the reporting?

Reporting used in the loosest sense of the word here really as it is a chip wrapper I am referring to here.

What you need is a compliant real estate agent, a dodgy lawyer, a dishonest property dealer and someone in a bank who is either crooked or stupid. The first and best were Caucasian.       Contract to buy something, crank valuation and onsell contract to associated entity after borrowing 110% of price. Use spare borrowing to pay other mortgages.
      in a year re-value and re-borrow, use funds to pay loans.
      Rince and repeat.

  A false claim posted on 4chan that a Redditor who created an anti-CNN GIF, and who was tracked down by CNN, was just 15 years old made its way to Donald Trump Jr. and on Fox News within 12 hours. According to CNN and the reporter who helped identify the Reddit user, the man is actually middle aged. The fact that the claim (made to smear CNN for attacking a teenager) was able to spread so quickly exemplifies how misinformation from fringe sources can make its way through the “alt-right”/fake news ecosystem and to outlets with a broader reach, such as Fox News.

    You don’t blackmail someone with something that could very probably endanger them because you have hurt feelings – it’s not OK as an individual to do that. It’s infinitely worse and unbelievably hypocritical of an international corporation that is trying to disprove allegations of dishonesty and corruption to employ tactics that are essentially dishonest and corrupt because of butthurt!

I am worth more than anybody else – I am owed.
Why will nobody give me more money – my hourly income is not enough – my union says so.
I don’t care a damn where it comes from as long as I get my increased share.
Like many others I am only interested in me.
I don’t care about you or anybody else as I am important, and am sure I am being discriminated against.
I know little Little will give me what I want so I will vote for him unless another political party will give me more.
I am sure that the Greenpeace party will give me at least $100 an hour.
Somebody must be able to print money – I want lots as am owed.

With free-to-air TV audiences dwindling and switching to international content – my question is: When does Central Government reduce the tax burden on taxpayers, who pay (through NZ On Air, Te Mangai Paho etc) for shows nobody is watching any more?

What is the annual contribution towards locally made television anyway?

In a related omnishambles, Landcorp owns 140 farms, worth 1.6 billion. They have delivered the Government precisely zero dividends in the past 18 months / two years.

WTF? Why not? Are they paying a mortgage?

  The last I looked about a year ago pubic Television in NZ received about $80 million a year(over 1.5 million a week) for mostly dross.
  This includes over one million per annum for 7 Days and $ 1.7 million for Jonno and Ben.
  Plus six and half million $$$ for ‘Westside’ per year.
  
  Without this taxpayer funding the overseas-owned Mediaworks TV arm would be gone-burger.
  Would anyone notice? After all they are basically taxpayer beneficiaries.
  
  Maori television in addition receives about $60 million a year or over a Mill a week to dwell in luxury in Newmarket 100 metres from the Broadway shops.
  
  TVNZ should have been moved out of the city or to a car yard on Great North Road instead of the building swap near the casino. The refurbishment cost $60 million instead of the budget of $30 million.
  I guess their money management skills are not great.
  It’s a good thing we taxpayers are there to keenly help them out!
  I imagine the car dealers on Great North Road would have been alarmed about a drop in the tone of the place if TVNZ had moved into their area. Relieved much!
  
  Pay up peoples or you won’t get Lisa Owing or Niggle Latta anymore.

Why do people who talk about how evil the ” Rich Prick ” is always want to be involved in the celebration when they have achieved greatness like winning the America’s Cup. How will this help the poor with the parades happening all over NZ and the cost of travel or the luxury that you have just supporting it or do these people just front up to Social Welfare and ask for food Vouchers so they can feed their Families next week.

There’s no way getting around the NK problem. The deluded psychos are goading the U.S, pure and simple. The U.N. can’t do anything and won’t do anything. Guarantee it.

I’ve come across the goading once or twice in my lifetime; they never expect you to, but a short sharp fist to the nose drops them in their tracks and it’s dealt with.

The NK’s are playing a very dangerous game, having painted themselves into a corner with their insane rhetoric the administration has no place to go but up, now they have brainwashed their populace into thinking the U.S. wants to wipe them out.

I think the U.S. will strike.

  Personally I think the US should let Nth Korea strike first, which I doubt they will.
  If the US strikes first it’s odds on that NK will retaliate & Sth Korea is just down the road.
  Trump, not one to put too much thought into his rhetoric, is painting himself into a corner. Then again he does that on a continuing basis on most things. He’s such an opportunist.

      Trump has threatened retaliation if Nth Korea carry out certain actions.
      They have, he hasn’t.
      You may recall, by the way, the Obama did the same thing with Assad.
      Quite frankly Kim Jong Un is running rings around him at the moment. Trump has now feebly asked China to put a ‘heavy move’ on them, or whatever.

  It’s hard to know what the USA will do in the face of endless North Korean provocation. But Trump is certainly doing the right things in appointing General McMaster and General Mattis to head up defence and national security.
  
  And Trump is at least facing the central issue of the time – does the West have the inclination to defend itself? Here is an excerpt from his most recent speech in Poland –
  Trump said that “the fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive.”
  “Do we have the confidence in our values to defend them at any cost?” Trump said. “Do we have enough respect for our citizens to protect our borders? Do we have the desire and the courage to preserve our civilisation in the face of those who would subvert and destroy it?”
  
  For far too many people in the West we’re educated about everything that we have supposedly done wrong in our history. But what strikes me about Trump and about America generally is that they are proud of the country and proud of their history.
  
  The West differently has the power and the means to defend ourselves from North Korea or radical Islam or whatever. The question remains, do we have the will? Do we really believe our Western civilisation is worth fighting for?

    Was not Trump’s position that nations had to do more and the US might withdraw its bases if they do not?
    
    Did he not say that South Korea and Japan might need to get nuclear weapons capability?
    
    Since then the USA and Japan have talked about not allowing North Korea to reach ICBM nuclear warhead capability (they are at ICBM stage now or thereabouts, but have apparently not yet made progress on miniturisation of the nuke for placing on a war-head – something that if they had the capacity to do before ICBM stage would have been kept very secret so missile development would not have been put at risk).
    
    Trump’s strength is not in holding to a position.

Browsing around, saw the list of participants which included several well known political figures.

but left with the distinct feeling they are only doing the sleep out for their own profile. How else do you explain Green Party candidates with donation totals of $250 and $500 (Ricardo Menedez and Chloe Swarbrick) – when a whole lot of no names and kids who work their butts off getting donations from friends, family, whoever can raise thousands?

  Let us put aside that having had a living funded by government funded research there is no potential conflict of interest in advocating for even more publicly funded research to prove that an unproven hypothesis holds water after bazillions of publicly funded research has failed to come up with a single model that comes within cooeeee of accurately predicting climactic variations.
  
  This is just more patrician preaching to ‘the little people’ that us scientists know best and we shouldn’t bother our silly little brains trying to understand all these things that we pay for like research and leave it to our betters.

      The distrust starts when scientists start using the term “consensus” – there is no frigging consensus with science. A theory is proposed, analysis is carried out, evidence is gathered, the theory is either:
      – proven
      or
      – disproved.
      
      There is no proof, despite promises – the icecaps are still there and so are the polar bears – Al Gore lied, so did Leonardo di Caprio.
      
      There is only self-interested “consensus” and consensus belongs in theology – not science. Small wonder that the world’s conspiracy theorist movements have so embraced climate alarmism – when you find yourself in the same camp as the ~~always wrong~~ Greens – you have to question whether you put your head or a potato on that morning.

I note that there are questions being asked (not by the hard left of course) as to how the Grenfell fire started. It appears that the man whose fridge ‘burst’ into flames has disappeared and that prior to the fire he had moved his entire family out of that flat and tower block. The suspicion is that perhaps the fire started as a result of an incendiary device malfunctioning.
Is there a Islamist connection and if so why are the media keeping it so quiet?

One thing we earned from the AC parade yesterday is that Bill English is no orator; his delivery was ponderous and uninspired. By comparison Goff was animated and enthusiastic. Fortunately for Bill campaigning has changed and public meetings are not as important as they used to be. John Key had issues with diction but was still able to engage an audience with humour and anecdotes; Bill English on the hustings would be sleep inducing. Meanwhile the gremlin from the North is out there stirring up the faithful.

Qatar.

A little bit about the energy politics at play. They have large gas reserves (and shared fields with Iran).

Qatar is increasing its production (30% by 2024) and has moved to supply all of their gas in LNG form (and now does not use any pipelines at all but send by sea out of the Gulf in this form). The LNG is processed back into a form for input into pipelines when it is delivered to such a point.

This will create a glut in this market and increasingly important one for Americans who supply the same world market.

They are also capable of financing the development of Iranian reserves (share of some of the same fields as Qatar) for export.

This should be good news for Europeans looking for an alternative to pipelines from Russia, competition reducing the price they pay for LNG and or be a captive of Russian supply.

German riot police are battling it out with about 8000 masked, and probably anarchist, rioters in Hamburg ahead of the G20 meeting.

At last 76 people have been injured in clashes after demonstrators refused to remove their masks.

Water cannon seem to have given police the upper hand.

The Independent reports:

Hamburg police chief Ralf Martin Meyer said they were expecting “not just sit-in protests but massive assaults” as anarchists from neighbouring countries are expected to make the journey to the city which has long been associated with protests and May Day rioting.

It turns out that temperature adjustments by scientists (to account for this or that) account for nearly all warming. None of the raw data show it.

In fact, almost all the surface temperature warming adjustments cool past temperatures and warm more current records, increasing the warming trend, according to the study’s authors.

“Nearly all of the warming they are now showing are in the adjustments,” Meteorologist Joe D’Aleo, a study co-author, told The Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview. “Each dataset pushed down the 1940s warming and pushed up the current warming.”

“You would think that when you make adjustments you’d sometimes get warming and sometimes get cooling. That’s almost never happened,” said D’Aleo, who co-authored the study with statistician James Wallace and Cato Institute climate scientist Craig Idso.

  All of these changes introduce (non-random) systemic biases into the network. For example, MMTS sensors tend to read maximum daily temperatures about 0.5 C colder than LiG thermometers at the same location. There is a very obvious cooling bias in the record associated with the conversion of most co-op stations from LiG to MMTS in the 1980s, and even folks deeply skeptical of the temperature network like Anthony Watts and his coauthors add an explicit correction for this in their paper.

  Time of observation changes from afternoon to morning also can add a cooling bias of up to 0.5 C, affecting maximum and minimum temperatures similarly. The reasons why this occurs, how it is tested, and how we know that documented time of observations are correct (or not) will be discussed in detail in the subsequent post. There are also significant positive minimum temperature biases from urban heat islands that add a trend bias up to 0.2 C nationwide to raw readings.
  
  Because the biases are large and systemic, ignoring them is not a viable option. If some corrections to the data are necessary, there is a need for systems to make these corrections in a way that does not introduce more bias than they remove.

There are now untreatable “superbug” strains of gonorrhoea the World Health Organisation says.

WHO experts said it was “only a matter of time” before last-resort gonorrhoea antibiotics would be of no use.

A study on gonorrhoea published in the journal PLOS Medicine, documented three specific cases – one each in Japan, France and Spain – of patients with strains of gonorrhoea against which no known antibiotic is effective.

Earlier WHO’s programme for monitoring trends in drug-resistant gonorrhoea found in a study that from 2009 to 2014 there was widespread resistance to the first-line medicine ciprofloxacin, increasing resistance to another antibiotic drugs called azithromycin, and the emergence of resistance to last-resort treatments known as extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs).

In most countries, it said, ESCs are now the only single antibiotics that remain effective for treating gonorrhoea. Yet resistance to them has already been reported in 50 countries.

        One lady I know well coz her cuz was a good mate of mine started by marrying a refugee.
        He ditched her with 2 beautiful kids.
        Then she married a 2nd one after he shot through.
        He ditched her too.
        After that she didn’t have too many choices.
        (Apparently she could only get Asian refugees, men from her own culture prefer to marry Pakehas.)
        So she ended up with the local gang for companionship.
        All up she’s had 11 or 12 kids.
        (God knows why, except even my friend was breathless with pride when he mentioned she had had her 8th.)

  The Chinese and Russian goal is to leverage North Korean nukes on ICBM’s to offer a new peace arrangement – whereby the US of A take their forces out of Korea in return for nuclear disarmament by the north (and maybe China and Russia guarantee South Korean security).
  
  China would see this as the beginning of the removal of the Americans from their sphere. The end of arms sales to Taiwan, American forces leaving Japan, and a new border in the South China Sea imposed on ASEAN also on their agenda.
  
  A bit like Putin suggesting hackers based in Russia are just patriots acting independently of the Kremlin, China would have it that North Korean capability is developing independently.

The Hooerald features a report that Australia faces economic doom because of its high household debt. (See first link below.) Schadenfreude on the Hooerald web sub-editors’ desks.

The Hooerald doesn’t look at NZ’s high household debt. The international comparison shown in the second link below states that, in ratio of household debt to GDP, Australia ranks third in the world, but NZ ranks sixth. Admittedly it’s for 2014, but I doubt NZ household debt would have fallen since then.

It may be the end for the road through the Manawatu Gorge. NZTA has stopped contractors working on slips when surveys indicated the possibility of more huge landslides.

Odds are on that it may never reopen & the preferred Saddle Track detour is better suited to goats than 32 wheeler B trains.

Big money will be spent to provide a solution.
