    I think one problem will be the Jacinda effect. Labour are bound to get a bounce* in the polls following Jacinda’s canonisation; some of this will be at the expense of the Greens and it will be hard to tell what part of the loss is due to Turei. It could take time to see the true effect and by that time it may be too late.
    
    *As a cat owner I find the term dead cat bounce offensive and refuse to use it.?

        But, still, I can stand a LITTLE more regulation over domestic pets.
        
        Ours is long-since spayed and has a bell around her neck which means she only gets to chase/scoff the dimmer-witted, Green-voting birds…
        
        Of course, being a sensible centre-right sort of feline, she also knows that all she has to do to get MY attention is to shake her head about.
        
        Nothing like waking at 10.30am after an early morning of Super Rugby Final watching to hear a cacophony emanating from a moggy with a stern ‘Listen here, human being, I am prepared to use these claws if I ain’t fed NOW!’

        Watching JA on Q+A I have to say she has the openess and the will to succeed. I doubt many in National who have been a round her will be mislead by the mindless rambling on KB.
        This is a Lady who wants to succeed and will, maybe not this time but next.
        It was interesting to note that the “poor” issue was down rated on the show. Look for that to disappear this next few weeks. She knows that her votes are not there.
        She is appealing to the lady voters, more so than Bill and Paula. Ladies vote with their emotions, unlike men, so expect the female vote to go up for her. (As it was with Clark.)
        I suspect that we have already seen that with the funds flowing into the Labour bank account.
        
        At 37 Jacinda is still young enough to appeal to the young set. Definitely will draw them in whereas English and Bennett just don’t appeal. It’s true.
        
        Unfortunately plenty of those behind the scene are still plonkers and even some of those that will make it into Parliament are plonkers but They just won’t be seen in the news. Just like Nationals cannon fodder are not seen.
        Its Jacinda all the way.
        
        Its interesting her appointment.
        Labour changed the rules a couple of years back so the unions had the power to make Angry the leader. apparently those rules went out the back door this week and caucus decided who their leader was going to be.
        
        If Jacinda and Labour make it to the position where they form a Govt. with who ever, who is going to be the leader?
        Are the unions going to insist on replacing Jacinda with Andrew?
        
        So far no one has asked about those rules and how they were got around.
        
        and the other great thing. Jacunda ain’t LGBT or what ever.
        That appeals to the women as well, many of who simply don’t like that emphasis being natural heterosexual people.

      National will up the ante closer to polling day. This goes much deeper than serial fraud by Turei. When you take into account her electoral lie (if it was that and not another major fraudulent act) and her complete lack of repentance, you have someone singularly unfit for office. Of more significance, in this election, the the Greens’ welfare policy. If it is implemented it will radically change the approach to welfare.
      Beneficiaries will not have to account for income received. They will not have to apply for jobs.
      
      It will not be welfare. It will be a form of universal income for those who adopt a life style that requires it.
      No longer will welfare be the ambulance for those who need it temporarily ( and there are many). It will be a career option, as if it is not bad enough, now.
      Labour has not denounced these proposals.
      National will be happy for public discontent to ferment and, if there is any possibility that the Greens may play a part in government, National will really hammer the point.
      
      If Turei stays on, Shen will be seen as an unprincipled trougher or someone intent on creating the biggest, and most pernicious upheaval of the welfare system since it started.
      There is enough outrage at Turei’s dishonesty. If she stays National will point out her subterfuge and the risk of labour being forced to implement some of those policies.

        The Greens are irrelevant to the election outcome. All they do is trade votes in and out of Labour.
        
        So National will not waste a moment over Turei, or the Greens generally. In any event the Turei situation is now over. It is yesterday’s news.
        
        The contest is 3 way fight between National, Labour and NZF. They trade votes between each other.
        
        Obviously Labour will now pick up some votes from the Greens. Will Labour also get some from the non voter, maybe a little, but not as many as people think. By and large non voters will continue not to vote. Labour will also be hoping that the erosion the NZF stops, but it could actually increase.
        
        National will be fighting a defensive game, holding on to what they have got. But they will need to be clever about this. There will be some soft National voters who will be tempted by Jacinda.
        
        Therein lies the danger for National. If Labour gets say 3% from the Greens, say 1% from the non vote and 2% from National, that is 30%. A Labour led government then no longer looks ridiculous, either to the voters or indeed to NZF, as opposed to when Labour was at 24%.
        
        If an alternate government starts to look likely then there is a real risk that some additional National vote could go to NZF to give them more bargaining power in the alternate government.
        
        So National potentially has a real problem ahead. It has to show that it is a safe harbour in stormy seas, But will that be enough? Certainly a 10 bridges campaign as in Northland will fail. That looked cynical. Whatever National does as new policy has to look credible.

        Well as a Labour-led government may now be more of a possibility than it was under Little, National needs to win many of those back thinking about giving their protest vote to NZF.
        
        Similarly those previously thinking a protest vote to NZF was viewed as “making National move back to the Right” (an oxymoron due to NZF’s rejection of “neo-liberal” economics which underpin both National and Labour) and also a “safe move to provide a Nat+NZF Govt” (i.e. a previously stronger polling National + NZF had a higher chance of being the government than say Lab+Greens+NZF, therefore Winston won’t support Labour) need to rethink that because the landscape has now changed i.e. worse case is a weakened National and a strengthened Labour …
        
        Therefore Winston could claim, with no clear Nat/Lab (+Green) majority, he could legitimately support Labour to form a government (even if Labour polled much less than National). Let’s face it Ardern may wish to take time out to have a family (note that yesterday she wouldn’t commit as to remaining Labour leader for the 2020 election), so Winston may receive the ultimate bauble – that of caretaker Prime Ministership for a period of time!

        Wayne, almost inevitably there will be those who go to Labour as a result of the persuasive Women’s Weekly appeal of Jacinda. To the majority of NZ she is still a youthful socialist who has yet to face down a pressing issue or confrontation. She may be seen as a fence-sitter.
        
        She may have to show her metal in the campaign, even to the point of creating an issue. Otherwise, she will be seen as a few years too early for the job which, unless National produce another charismatic leader and show a bit of imagination, she will inevitably get.

    Maybe a few of the young and impressionable women who don’t have any interest in politics V2.
    Most of us little women don’t vote by emotion, we are not shallow enough to vote for a woman candidate because she is pretty and has a nice smile, and promises us all ponies and to help the POOR children. We are engaged and understand the economy is important.

It has been reported that 11 Californian counties have more people on their voting rolls than adults over the age of 18 living there. This was an investigation by Judicial Watch for the Election Integrity Project The worst is LA County which may be 44% over. The Secretary of State Alex Padilla won’t investigate as it he says it gives credence to Trump’s assertion of vote stacking. I would say his refusal does that.

        California is a classic example of decadence and decline and fall in civilisation. They are taking for granted everything that made them “great” as if it just fell out of the air, and acting like the Prodigal Son pissing their inheritance away.
        
        Secession would have the opposite outcome these deluded idiots think; they think they want to cut free from the unreason of the Republican States but it is them who are in terminal decline from unreason.         Nature gave up being a Journal some years ago when it started looking for papers that were “high impact” (a.k.a. sensationalised) rather than the stuff of substance. The fact that academia rate it highly is more a reflection on their poor standards, rather than any quality. And don’t give us that crap about peer review.       In Canada the people on the Supreme Court are justices, not judges (USA uses the term judge I believe).
      
      So to say he was a judge is like calling a judge a magistrate.

        A puisne justice is one appointed to a court but not as the most senior judge. So by your definition, the only proper judge on the Supreme Court of Canada would be the Chief Justice.

Ian Binnie, who is a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, is certainly no slouch, so I am interested in reading his take on the matter.

    This whole “what is Maori” is a mess. I know some people claim “if you feel Maori then you are Maori” but that is subjective. You must have an objective, measurable definition of “Maori.”
    Others say that if even the tiniest drop of Maori blood flows in your veins, then you are Maori. If that is the case, then we shall see blue-eyed blonde Maori claiming full Maori rights and privileges. That smacks of opportunism.
    I propose a Japanese-style koseki (family register) system that documents the heritage of each “Maori.” Once the percentage of pure “Maori” blood falls to below 50% then, like truth in advertising, you cannot claim to be “Maori.” To do so would be to deny your European/Pacific Island/Asian or whatever heritage of your ancestors–which is a grave insult to their memories.
    
    What do the rest of you think of this idea?

      I have some extended family members who, a number of years ago, and despite being born and living away from their rohe, approached their iwi for study support. Wasn’t a simple matter of “yeah, here’s the cash”, and the paperwork and other evidence they had to supply was as rigourous as a reasonable person would expect.

        Just out of interest, Malcolm Mulholland’s book on the history of the NZ Maori rugby team “Beneath the Māori Moon” details the four players (in over 100 years!) who seem to have been ineligible but were nonetheless selected for the Maori:
        
        Alan “Kiwi” Blake of Wairarapa in the late 1940s (he was part-Afro-American or is it still “black”, or now “a person of color”?! – “Negro” as it was then!), and that may have been known to some administrators. However, as the NZ Maori team were given a tour to Australia as compensation for not being eligible for 1949 All Black selection in South Africa, Blake was also included as a sympathy gesture.
        
        Paul Koteka in the early 1980s, while a prop from Tokoroa, was in fact a Cook islander. There were a lot of migerant Island families working in the paper mills and other industries in Tokoroa t the time, and it says something that they assimilated in so well. BTW, more recent New Zealand/Pacific Island sports stars Kevin Mealamu and Maria Tutaia come from the same community.
        
        Miah Melsom, a flanker also from the same time and place, who played in Waikato teams alongside Koteka, but was Tongan/Lebanese. From a personal point of view, Melsom was one of the scariest players who ever played domestic rugby! 😉
        
        Also, in 1988 North Harbour lock Daryl Williams was selected, but then dropped when it turned out he was part-Fijian, not Maori.
        
        And that is about it – including Christian Cullen, whose whakapapa checked out.

        The point of the special privelige entry to 2nd year is if they don’t make the cut off , like all the other races have to , to go forward they can front up and say , “Hey , I’m special , I’m Maori and on that basis I want to go through to 2nd year. ” Yes they have to pass first year but they don’t have to have as high marks as the under priveliged and therefor discriminated against whiteys.

    One of the inevitabilities of race-based policing and justice that bleeding heart liberals don’t get, because they don’t understand incentives and effects: if you force the police and judges to give one particular race a free pass on crimes they are committing, the amount of crime committed by that race will increase. The problem will get worse even as you are denying it.
    
    It is also obvious that to a certain class of person, welfare is nothing more than a retainer payment for a career of crime. Tiding you over when the takings from burglary and drug dealing are a bit down.

      Maori youth may get more cheeky at the Police stage and hence incur more charges. Even simple swearing can be an offence and get added to the charge sheet. The number of charges is persuasive in Court. With co-operative alleged crims the Police may agree to reducing a charge to a lesser one or dropping one or more completely if it wraps a job up.

  In good conscience, the only party I can support is ACT. I disagree with Seymour about euthanasia but that’s a personal issue. NZ’s malaise is obvious to those with eyes to see.
  
  Spend anytime in, or with people from, a more prosperous country, and it’s hard not to hang your head in shame. The fact that a major political figure in this country proudly advocates welfare fraud is a disgrace. The fact that 1 in 5 voters support her makes you weep.
  
  “Reality calibration” will come soon enough. In the meantime, join the 1.8% who vote ACT. At least we tried.

    ACT need a decent Social Media person who knows what they are doing. They need 6-7 policies that they get into everyone’s head.

Have just hosted a guest from Germany. ‘Europe is doomed,’ she said. This from a cultured and caring nurse who volunteers to help immigrant children learn German so that they can fit in better to their host society. (‘One small boy kept repeating the phrase obviously heard at home ‘Women are shit.”)

Seems that these volunteers helping the migrants come together periodically to share stories and to support one another. The rule is that ‘what is said here remains here’ because stories of the behaviour of so many of the migrants are so vile that if they got into the public arena there would be civil strife in Germany. Migrants who came from countries such as Syria expecting to have a BMW laid on, a flash home and money for jam turn nasty and ungrateful when it turns out that such largesse is not actually on offer. Funny that.

This woman no longer goes out alone in the evening because of the danger posed by immigrant men. In every German city, town and hamlet unemployed and umemployable, mostly illiterate, young men hang about causing unrest. Ah, the benefits of Muslim immigration.

  Agree. A close Kiwi friend has a family member living in Hamburg. They once lived in a “nice” crime free suburb with parks where children could play without fear of harm.
  
  Now it is the opposite with gangs that are mainly Muslim refugees taking over the streets. It is no longer safe to walk through some areas even during the day. At night, well forget it.
  
  They are now prisoners in their suburb and becoming very paranoid. Even the Police are reluctant to take action as they are out numbered.
  
  Currently they are trying to sell their virtually worthless property and return to NZ.

For the greens to raise the 14 billion (the gap) needed to undertake all their transport “Policies” in Auckland they will need to raise petrol tax by dollars not cents. Currently a 10c raise would only raise $100 million. Tolling would be $100’s dollars a week. Do they expect the workers in Whanganui to pay for Aucklands traffic problems?

  The one thing that I’m sure the politicians and liberal media want Ardern to achieve is to remove their biggest fear – that growing number of ‘grumpy’ NZ voters who have been increasingly ignored for decades and feel inclined to say ‘A pox on both their houses’ – as voters have been doing around the world.
  
  Previously, it was very possible huge numbers would vote for Winston or another small party because they’re sick of being ignored by both main parties.
  
  Ardern may attract enough interest to Labour – particularly from a youth vote for smiles, youth, ‘positivity’, and dreams of socialist nirvana – that realistic voters feel compelled to vote National.
  
  If there’s one thing the political and liberal sphere really don’t want, it’s voters to upset their power base and vote for neither Labour nor National.
  
  As Lisa Owen states, opposition parties don’t win elections – ruling parties lose them. Just look at what the Tories did to themselves in the UK with one foolish manifesto.
  
  National need to appeal to aspirant youth in practical terms, address the need for deeper and more real representation of and responsiveness to the majority of voters, and generate livable incomes.
  
  Someone needs to start dealing with the problems deriving from globalism, immigration with allied cheap wages, increasing automation, and fragmented society – and it needs to be innovative and inspirational.

  Alas National (Simon Bridges) played that one wrong big time. No wonder Winston simply needs to turn up, be outraged and gain “protest” votes at National’s expense (and despite Winston having no power to actually do anything anyway, the devious fox).
  
  The businesses of Woodville are hurting massively (some if not many, will close down) due to the Manawatu Gorge closure. As the residents in the article say, their insurance won’t cover them. But say look at the Kaikoura earthquake, there both insurance, and government looked after the businesses for a period of time to ensure their survival.
  
  Yes we are all weary of “corporate welfare”, but in this situation we are talking about mum and dad and family business owners (not multinationals) who will go to the wall due to a natural disaster, and because it was a natural disaster the government ought to step-up, even for short 6-12 month period as the temporary alternative routes are eventually re-routed to run into Woodville thus restoring the natural order etc.
  
  This isn’t a case of National’s “bribes” (although it is for Winston), it is a matter of National supporting the regions …

    See Christchurch uninsured Red Zone properties – see also Southern Response Insurance who are using Taxpayers money in hundreds of millions still to take over AMI’s bankrupt failure.
    The Shareholders of AMI should have paid for their Company’s failure, but it was a Mutual, so that it was owned by the policyholders insuring with a market (price) driven company.

  Yes, there were some posts and links on GD a few days ago about that. Initially you rightly think, “wtf!”. However, I note it was the proposers of the synagogue itself who wanted additional architectural additions, not usually in the building code, to protect against what they first stated were “possible terror attacks”. So it wasn’t the council – or more particularly the court that heard the case, that first raised the security issue. And if it is really the case, then I’d be less than sanguine about the assurance from the backers of the synagogue that, “there was no risk to the rest of the community”. How can they give that assurance? You raised the possibility of the risk, therefore, no matter what it is, you then have to specify what can be done to mitigate against it, not just for you, but also your potential neighbours.
  
  Is a catch 22 situation, more likely an inevitable result of planning bureaucracy, than a gutless cowering to the “spread of Islam”. Ball in the synagogue’s backers’ court to draft their consent application so they get what they want (security) without saying that is the real purpose. So it ain’t just NZ that struggles with RMA silliness.

Just saw the replay of the incident in the Super Rugby final where Kwagga Smith was red-carded for taking Crusader David Havili out in the air.

A fair decision, but as I’ve said before, under current rugby rules it is only a matter of time before someone is crippled for life, even killed being taken out in the air. In the “old day” rugby law encouraged the catcher to keep both feet on the ground as that is what was required to claim a fair catch. Now, in leaping in the air, the catcher’s primary intent is seeking to make themselves “immune” from the tackle. From a rugby-principle position that is wrong – if you have the ball in open play you should be liable to be tackled. Rightly, for safety reasons that cannot happen, but what that then entails is the chaser modifying basic instinct, and having to make a split-second decision about whether to also leap in the air to compete for possession, or arriving at precisely the moment the catcher descends to earth and making a tackle with maximum advantage. As there is an onside position from which a chaser is arriving at maximum velocity, and the rugby tackle is different in nature and force compared to that in Australian Football, the consequences of mistiming are so much worse when players compete for the ball in the air. Indeed, in a fast dynamic contact sport, at some point they will be misjudged. For super-fit professionals, and even for amateurs trying to imitate the techniques they see on TV, it will be a losing gamble at some point.

Some 120 years ago New Zealand rugby learned the tragic folly of players coming off their feet to evade a tackle. Unless something is done to require the catcher to keep their feet on the ground, it is only a mater of time before there is another Barney Armit:

Just about time to disband the Warriors. The Knights have been pitiful these last couple of seasons, but they beat our lot yesterday with ease.
It’s a shame because in South Auckland they have probably attracted a more loyal following than the Blues over the years.
I heard an Aussie critic suggest there were too many Kiwis in the team who haven’t grown up with a solid grounding in the game.
Makes sense.

        The Warriors are well known for talking a big game, but cutting corners and never doing what it takes to address the real problems. Goes right back to their conception and the crazy days in the mid-1990s, and the NZ league community from which they emerged. Back office inhabited by the predominantly white guys in suits is where the problem starts and the excuses are made, and it always has. As soon as some Warriors administrator says “we are going to overtake rugby as the most popular sport in the country within the next 5 years”, you just sit back and wait for the next implosion, because you know the are not concentrating on the right thing. Get the processes in both front and back offices right, ruthlessly ditch anyone who doesn’t accept them no matter how talented or “indispensable” they may seem, and then patiently let the results take care of themselves…

        Rugby League remains the majority code in both NSW and Queensland, so it never had a chip on its shoulder regarding rugby. Instead, it either just ignored it as a posh school/University game…or picked off rugby players for their own code starting with Dally Messenger, and on through the likes of Phil Hawthorne, Ray Price, Russell Fairfax, Tony Melrose, Kenny Wright, Brett Papworth…
        
        Plus, while the State of Origin series is great sport, let’s face it, you don’t have to do much to dominate world rugby league – beat a team from Auckland, and a few areas in the North of England. Therefore, Australian “excellence” and dominance since the mid-1970sm, with a few exceptions, is almost by default and looks better than it is having rarely been seriously tested. Arguably the All Blacks are the same, with a few more competitors.
        
        But credit where it is due: Mark Graham said that in NZ league the guy who is admired is the one who administers a “big hit”. In Aussie, in his playing days it was the guy who received a big hit….and then came back running with the ball just as strong. That culture difference is probably due to league being a fully pro game in Sydney from the early 1900s. In NZ, while league was in theory professional, in reality it was amateur with a bit of spending money. And as the catchment was too small, there were no expectations, as, say, the All Blacks and rugby had.

  You are correct WG and there’s no mention of how much the tax will be. It is ‘thought’ to be 10 cents a litre and will be levied by Auckland City. Auckland ratepayers may as well pass their wallets over to Goff and tell him to help himself. Sure, it will start at 10 cents a litre but as Goff finds himself more and more legacy projects you can bet the house the fuel tax will increase. It won’t only affect Aucklanders as the downstream effects will increase freight charges, airfares etc. Whilst Kiwis south of the Bombays may have a bit of a chuckle at the Jafas getting dicked over once again don’t believe for a minute that your own councils won’t be pressuring central government for a regional tax for their mayors’ pet project. This is just the thin end of the wedge.

This individual decided to have a baby on purpose, she thought it would give her an easy ride through varsity, paid for by the taxpayer.
Silly person. She would have been entitled to lots more money as a student (dare I say it maori – unless grades poor). She could have had others pay board in her flat without a care in the world. No fraud involved. She must be the stupidest person around. Or did her equally silly mother tell her it was the way to go, have the child and rip off the taxpayer.
And this person thinks they are qualified to be in government.

    As I wrote a couple of months back on KB, if the atomic bomb hadn’t ended the Pacific War so promptly, the man (a kamikaze pilot instructor in 1945) who offered me my first job out of college would not have survived the war. Through that job, I met my wife.

  When I’ve visited Japan in the crowds I’ve been occasionally surprised to see a Japanese who looks strikingly similar to some of my Maori acquaintances and relatives in NZ.
  
  I wouldn’t be surprised if some strands of Japanese DNA don’t link to the aboriginals of Taiwan, who seem to be the ancestors of Polynesians.
  
  DNA is throwing up some very surprising links. Like the strain in Scots, especially Orkney Islanders, that is allied to the reindeer-herding Yakut tribe deep in Siberia. This is probably the result of ice-age meanderings.

    Japan (as a whole) is a lot more genetically diverse than parts of (Han) China.
    In Japan you will come across individuals who look very “Filippino,” or “Samoan,” or “Siberian,” or “Han Chinese,” or “Indonesian,” etc.
    
    Polynesians originated among the aborigines of Taiwan, and there certainly are commonalities between aspects of Maori culture and Japanese culture, hence my suggestion of the Japanese style of family-register system for Maori.

      Why don’t we do an internet-age jump and have DNA testing of all babies, and record these in a national register, with child’s chosen name, names of parents, and perhaps with some basic medical details if these would be helpful for the health system?
      
      Where the mother declines or is unable to name a father, a link could be inserted to DNA clues elsewhere in the database.

She fails to see that Jacinda’s story is completely different. Jacinda volunteered the info and said she didn’t want the job because she wanted to have babies.

In a workplace situation that is like going to an interview and saying you didn’t want a senior role because you want to make babies and taking a junior role instead. Then, less than a year later, a senior job comes available and you say you want it. They company is surely entitled to ask about the change in what you have said.

  Davis then related some weird story about ‘Victor’ he met yesterday at the footy finals.
  Victor’s wife has to give up work because the baby is milk intolerant. Huh. Not clear why but it is Nats fault! Because. Just because.
  Don’t expect an intelligent answer from Davis.
  His chance to shine shows him as dull.
  In essence Victor was pissed – as per Davis’ statement – at the footy with his sick daughter. What a great parent model. Dollars to donuts Victor drove home pissed with his baby daughter.
  
  Kelvin Davis really does hang with the wrong crowd. He is not leadership material.
  
  He is a small minded teacher type that clearly does not like to be challenged. Most of us encountered this at school somewhere along the way but got out to the real world and left it behind.
  
  Davis’ thoughts go as deep as a carpark puddle.
  He has a confrontational, aggressive, uncompromising style.
  For a bovver boy from the educational sector he will prove to be slow at learning.
  This will show up over the next 7 weeks- if he is allowed out again.

There are screeds of Maori who have dropped their real English names in order to make hay from the Maori gravy train…Stephen (tipeni) O’Regan, Nicola (atereta) Poananga, Patricia (hekia) Parata, and a well known actor who was Graeme McFarland but has changed both names to something completely Maori.     A petrol tax hits those that can least afford it (eg the poor, working poor, households on one income etc), as well as say tradies and transport (I guess they will pass their increased costs to the consumer).
    
    And depending on their circumstances (eg getting kids to school, working shifts, working early or working late, living away from public transport routes) alot of these people may not be able to make use the new public transport and light rail being mooted by Labour … but they will be paying for it via more petrol taxes. 🙁

      Our roads should be wider with more lanes.
      Just like the rail from Akld to Papakura should be three to four tracks to allow express services. The stopping at each station at present is just stupid.

  These Labour luddites like to use the word ‘light rail’.
  They are trams.
  There are some spectacularly unsuccessful ones at Wynyard Qtr right now.
  
  In Canberra they are putting in trams but there is plenty of room so they will run down wide grassy median strips.
  They will still be useless. The rails will be just over 2 km long. The idea is to drive up to 2 km to the tram station from the suburbs , park if you can get one, then do half your journey this way. Duh.
  
  In Newcastle (160 km North of central Sydney) they have had a train to the centre of Newcastle for over 100 years. No more. They have ripped up the tracks for the last 3 km and are replacing the train with ‘light rail’ = fricking trams. Business people now have to catch a train then, when built, wait for a tram. Right now there are taxis and uber at the Hamilton station where ‘actual rail ‘ has been terminated. Those fossil fuel burning things.
  So they have shut the old rail but not built the new tram.
  
  When I purchased just off Dominion Rd over 20 years ago the road was ‘meant to be widened to 3 lanes’ each way. I did not expect much given the virtual non existence of new roading in the 1990s.
  The current state is there is basically one lane for traffic at peak as one is a bus lane. 7-9 am and 4-6pm evenings. The magic cycle route instead of going straight down Dominion rd is redirected up hill and down dale on squiggly wiggly side streets. True cyclists still use Dom Rd.
  
  Where will a tram go?
  Will the tram be able to get up the Hillsborough high gradient hill?
  I doubt it.
  Maybe they will have Fell engines like on the Rimutakas up to the mid 1950s when the tunnel was built.
  Does SoundBite Cindy know there is a 24 hour specialist bus service from the city centre to the Airport? This goes down Dominion Rd or alternative trips are Mt Eden Rd.
  Does Soundbite Cindy know that the Waterview tunnel is opened so cars from the city can now go up Hobson St, down Highway 16, then onto 20 out to the airport? No more burbs to crawl through,
  
  How will a tram on this magic route help people from the North Shore?
  How will it help people from West Auckland who are now better off with the Waterview tunnel?
  How will it help South or East Auckland?
  C’mon Cindy, Seriously!
  
  It will be for backpackers for the most part.
  As is the current Airport bus (Which I use sometimes )
  Backpackers won’t be paying local petrol tax!!
  Business people will still catch taxis or Uber.
  Evil petrol or diesel shuttle buses will still run to all suburbs as they do now.
  Phil Goff will ever use the tram after a ceremonial ride?
  The Auckland council and AT people use taxis and cars to get between offices because the trains are unreliable and too slow.
  
  This is old Liebour policy from pre Uber and Pre Waterview tunnel days.
  They possibly don’t know about the Airport Bus.
  With Crown cars n all.
  If the move is towards electric cars what happens to the petrol tax uptake.
  Even Me Tu is driving an electric car on loan from a friend (so says the blurb)

    Buses from the airport could feed into the rail network or continue on north, south or west ,east.
    Ferry’s from there could also cover the west from waiuku to Huia feeding into local suburban buses.
    
    A dedicated bus lane from the airport to Onehunga allows for public transport to spread out from there over the existing networks .
    
    Rails are fixed and require investment in rolling stock the is both expensive and difficult to adapt to changing needs.
    
    We are on the cusp of the switch to electric personal transport and self driving technology.
    Electric cars in the next five years self driving technology level 5 autonomy perhaps a decade
    away.
    Both of these are game changes that the choo choo set ignore
    
    Dedicated Bus lanes could also be used to allow the early adoption of autonomous transport If you take out the human interface we could see transport units traveling safely at 120kmh+ a meter or two apart .

Like all politicians, none really understand the struggle that small business face on a daily bases in providing the wealth of around 80% of the NZ economy. They are simply a resource by which the Government extract money from the sweat and brow of people like you and I, and then redistribute this wealth both into their own pockets as they see fit and, into the pockets of others whom will see them remain in a position of power. One of the golden rules of business, is never to knock your competition, but to position your product and or, services as a Rolls Royce rather than a Mini. Hearing the rhetoric of the deputy leader of the Labour party today rubbishing the National party in spades, was very surprising and a wake up call to how incompetent the Labour party would be in handling the economy of this country. I was once a fan of his, but to hear him spiel this vitriol today against the competition (National), served only to remind me of what a wasted space the Labour party are. Utterly clueless.

This is nuts. James Shaw is doubling down and substituting himself for Metiria utterly sincerely. He’s said he told her to go public and knew all the details. He’s said that the Greens will do her work as the centre of a Labour Greens government. He’s now saying that he too is noble by dint of closeness to St Metiria of Turei, and that she’s already made the ‘ultimate sacrifice’.

I always thought James Shaw was a bit different. Wow – this video needs to be shared and spread.

Most of the so called “hatred” that I’ve seen has been directed at Metiria Turei (not poor people), and not so much for what she first said, but because she first said she wouldn’t pay any money back despite racking in a 6 figure salary for the last several years and then double-downed on her situation, even after Newshub’s new revelations last Thursday.
  
  If anything most comments that I’ve see directed at the “poor”, have been along the lines of the “poor” will pay the price of Turei’s gleeful self-confessed fraud by likely facing greater scrutiny by the likes of MSD.

To their credit Bill English and Team National gave Jacinda and Calvin the last 48 hours to shine but now for both the party is over and reality bites.
Calvin looked more like a minder to Jacinda at the leadership launch.He looked as though he would start swinging if things went bad.To cap it off his only contribution to the launch was to mention his mate” Creature” which kind of fell flat on those gathered hoping Calvin might say something a little bit more inspiring. Pass.
And this morning to further demonstrate his comedic bent Calvin started slinging slang names for Nationals front bench, all in an attempt to curry favour with Hones’s crew.
The real comedy here is the lame good guy bad guy routine Jacinda and Calvin are playing, it’s so transparent, it may appeal to the 24% but will fall flat with the other 10% they are looking for.
In fact every circus has a clown, does Calvin want the job or will he prove otherwise.

Extra against what?

After you subtract the cost of CBD – Mount Roskill from 3.3billion you get $1.94billion for the projects 2 thru 6 that I’ve described above.

Are you kidding me?

What am I not getting here?

They’ve said that they will be able to meet the cost of projects one thru 6 with a regional fuel tax of 10c per litre that will raise “$160million” + Auckland will do ‘targeted rates” and they’ll use “infrastructure bonds” i.e. “Borrowing money”

It needs more analysis, but lets just assume all the light rail projects are also $1.36billion, like Mr Roskill, which is probably conservative, and they’re already way in excess of the 3.3billion figure.

Have I missed something or has Phil Goff been doing their numbers again from the mayors office?

Hey fellow net tax payers – can people please run some numbers on Labour’s transport plan? and if I don’t get a chance can someone copy paste my posts on the redoubtable James “Metiria” Shaw’s paragon of virtue signalling and contempt for the taxpayer into the first of tomorrows general debate? Unless Labour get 40% he’s you social dev guy.
There is something wrong with Labour’s transport costings.
Tell me if I’m wrong and how I’m wrong. I just don’t understand.

So, I’ve done a napkin back break-down of what the reported projects and costs that fall within that $3.3billion figure, with quotes:
1. Light rail, CBD – Mount Roskill – $1.36billion +
2. Light rail, CBD – West Auckland

    mate, that’s not Labour’s figure – that’s from independent public transport advocates:
    
    “In April, public transport advocates presented a plan for a $14bn rapid transit network”.
    
    If you click on the link you get: “An independent plan for what’s being touted as a better public transport network for Auckland has been unveiled”
    
    That’s not the Labour figure.
    
    Then in the Newshub article you linked to the only figures that are there are as follows: ‘Labour estimates the cost of the accelerated projects to require an extra $2.1 billion investment over the next two decades. It says $1.2b of costs will be avoided by building airport light rail from the beginning, instead of adopting the current plan to build a bus network first, and by selecting a cheaper East-West link option”.
    
    So the stuff cost I quoted is it – $3.3billion for all projects they’ve talked about. Or is there something else?

      Hmmm, no costings let alone breakdowns either in Labour’s press release on their website and Scoop. (Perhaps following Grant Robertson’s recent The Economist escapades, I guess he hasn’t finished ‘cutting’ the costs from these independent public transport advocates and ‘pasting’ them into Labour’s “new” policy, let alone properly add them up)?
      
      Seriously though, Labour need to better explain the infrastructure costings and project time frames for the various proposed developments and where the $14-15B is coming from (especially considering Labour want to also put billions and billions more into health, education, housing and other areas of society, as well as other regional development etc).
