I wonder what the effect of the fuel pipe fiasco will be on the election. Any thoughts?
The opposition are trying to bash the government over it, but they just sound desperate to me — it may backfire. Mostly it seems like a distraction.

    Yes “fake news” is a speciality, published daily in the trade union infested NZ HERALD . NZ Refinery own the pipe line. Not NZ Government .Sounds to me that the trade union journalists own the Herald. they can say any thing in print to assist the Green/Lie-bour mafias .     The Herald now has an alarmist headline about service stations running out of fuel. Read into the story and you discover that four service stations temporarily ran out of 95 octane fuel yesterday as Z was prioritising delivery of 91 petrol.
    
    Whilst this is a serious situation contingency measures are working well with airlines managing on their 30% quotas and topping up offshore. Leave the airlines to it, they deal with ‘real’ emergencies worldwide on a daily basis – traffic controllers strikes in Europe, major weather systems in the USA, airport closures due to terrorism – it’s all part of the aviation game and there’s no money in having aircraft sitting on the ground.
    
    Some support from the MSM would be good right now for the national wellbeing but we’re never going to get that whilst our media is controlled by two Australian-owned left wing corporates.

        It’s an Auckland issue tas. As far as the main part of NZ south of the Bombay Hills cares it is a localised problem. It will be seen along with all the other localised problems from steady Labour leadership and guidance. Can’t get in and out of Auckland. Stiff cheese.

    I am sure people can see it for what it is: an unfortunate incident.
    It is not the Government’s pipeline, it is privately owned.
    The Government has swung into action, with the army and navy helping out.
    Doubt it can do much more.
    It didn’t take Taxcinda long to point her bony finger, but, if anything, I think she has come out worst, looking sour, petulant and desperate.

        Sorry DM hit the wrong button. Again the story is far enough away from the time of the incident to be muddied up big time.
        Apparently there was a defect or damage to that section of pipe during laying but they decided to “live with it”. It also that the digger version was a distraction or diversion from the truth.
        
        It’s the old fish story getting exaggerated with each time it is told. The spin merchants are in full overdrive along with the blame game.
        In fact it is Bill English’s fault. He did not leave enough sticks for Labour or the Media party to beat him with so imagination must take over.

    That pipeline runs 24/7..365 days a year. Auckland Airport has storage but it gets tight..often. For a long time now, they have been blowin on about it ( the fuel companies). The increase in flights, in and out of Akl, has been HUGE the last 5 years. The increase in fuel consumption, in general, has not kept up with the city’s growth. The oil companies have been creaming it profit wise but maintenance wise..nah.
    Running on the seat of their pants, it was always going to fail. Lucky it’s not peak season.

  Well, there are about 20 advance voting booths within 5 km of the airport (as well as one in the International Departures area). So if you were dicked around by airlines, there is plenty of opportunity to take out your anger at a polling booth – unfortunately!

At the weekend I got chatting with a young(ish) couple about the election. It was a good natured exchange over which I deduced they were Labour supporters, and they no doubt deduced that I was in the National/ACT camp. Once we got beyond Jacinda vs Bill and started talking about policies in general, and how these might impact them personally I could see the lights starting to go on – more taxes, impact on rental rates (they’re not looking to buy), and aggressive unions disrupting industry etc.

It felt like my delicate proselytising had worked so I asked them who they were likely to vote for. The answer was a short but awkward silence, followed by “Ah… I think National would probably be better for us, but we both voted for Labour on Friday”

No wonder Taxinda wanted supporters to vote early. This couple definitely have buyers regret.

Hope many silly old misled pensioners fawning over Mr Ed realise she will be taking recommendations from Clive Matthew-Wilson to introduce stringent drivers’ tests for those over 65 years, also reinstating 6-monthly warrants of fitness for those of us with late model cars. By the way, hope they realise, fuel and registration are on the immediate hit list.

  I renewed my Rego a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t believe the price. I tried to tell the woman at the Post Shop that she must have charged me for three or six months instead of 12 because it was too cheap
  
  A simple thing like this is what people need to understand. Under Labour your car rego was $600 per annum, now it’s $80!!!

“Climate change denial should be a crime,” declared the Sept. 1 headline in the Outline. Mark Hertsgaard argued in a Sept. 7 article in the Nation, titled “Climate Denialism Is Literally Killing Us,” that “murder is murder” and “we should punish it as such.”

The fact of the matter is the truth does not need the law to protect it, only lies do.

    To be fair, BERL (and Infometrics for the Greens) don’t validate underlying assumptions. They just check the numbers add up down and sideways.
    It’s too hard for the media to explain the assumptions, so the Parties get away with their approval claims.
    I recall a previous Government (Richardson ?) requiring all parties to have their forecasts reviewed by Treasury ? Was that just a proposal ?
    It would be good to have an independent body review all parties financials, and spell out the differences in assumptions etc.

      Interesting, but to me, something as basic as the assumption about future GDP growth definitely should be checked.
      
      Therein lies the problem with (Richardson’s?) proposal. Those things can always be gamed, as the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) was gamed by the Democrats over Obamacare in 2009/10. Stuff some bullshit assumptions in that anybody with half-a-brain knows are bullshit – but make sure their charter means that they must simply accept the rules as they are written.

    I wonder how much damage BERL has done to its brand. It came out swinging on its website (or in some release it made) with a very strident message about how it and Labour were quite correct in their economic assessments. It simply came across as panicked and snarling.
    
    Everyone knows attack is the best form of defence when faced with a universal truth. Perhaps BERL has buyers remorse as well.

      Not so Sarkozygroupie. BERL were requested to check the data provided by Robbo. Validity of the data was not provided they simply did the sums. As they stated when the $11.7 billion hole was pointed out by Steven Joyce.
      
      He on the other hand did his calculation from the little RED book with Robbos raw data. The subsequent tax flip flop made that hole even bigger. Grab a copy of the little RED book and it will dispel any doubt. It is an eye watering read. You’ll cry laughing.

    Partly correct tom. What BERL said was the figures provided by Robbo were correct as they were given to them. That is to say it added up. They did not have any to do with compiling or validating how they were arrived at.
    They covered their arse well there but took no responsibility for the source data.

Had lunch recently with a group of friends/acquaintances- A couple of whom are hardcore Labour and actively involved in campaigning.
We made a promise not to talk Politics but after a few drinks the inevitable happened.
End result- We left early as things got heated and we were being taunted with such charming comments as “Time for you Rich Pricks to pay the Piper” “We don’t care about bloody Rich Farmers” and some unintelligible blithering about “White Privilege”
Be very fucking Afraid- Labour Voters consider this a ‘Revolution’ and there will be blood spilled.
The blood will be that of the hardworking Kiwi taxpayer (With a special spot at the guillotine for Farmers,Landlords and anyone who has investments in Property!)

  She was walking down the main street in Whanganui yesterday when a guy on the other side of the road started to berate her ( about support for released prisoners). He minders speed her up to a fast walk to get away from “The Voice”. She did a walk about in the ‘Town Square’ but there were minders surrounding her only letting slected people get close. The true misogyny is from those who hold that Jacinda can’t be criticised because she’s a woman. Presumably that because they believe, deep down,
that women are weaker and more fragile than men and must be protected from adverse comment.

The rest of us believe in the equality of sexes, that both men and women are capable of robust debate, competent policy-making, accountability and reason. And that some men and some women are lacking in those things and should be called out for it.

        I’m in the same position except my wife has voted overseas.
        The voting pack came in the mail this morning and I’m wondering what checks there in the system to stop the potential double vote ( I could easily give the easy vote card to a female friend to take along to the booth to use it to vote).
        I have never thought about the integrity of our voting system until I read about, the total mess they have in the USA, during their last election.
        This is an obvious flaw in our system.
        Could be easily fixed by requiring us to show an ID at the booth.

        Why do you want to put obstacles in the way of people who, for whatever reason, are not in a position to vote on one particular day?
        There are many other reasons besides laziness. Hospitalisation or incapacitation by illness, police work in a remote location, on tour with the woman’s national football team, and just sheer inconvenience for a myriad of reasons.
        In my opinion voting should be compulsory as it is in Australia.

In my opinion National haven’t done much wrong in the last few years and the economy is looking pretty good.
I still haven’t made a decision, don’t know about my wife. She never tells me who she is voting for and I don’t tell her who I am voting for.

      We used to go to the Rama IX weekend market in Bangkok located in a street of generally very affluent houses surrounded by high walls.
      There were some big open sided buildings for the people selling produce and some of the vendors set up along the footpaths. There were blind singers & school kids playing violins for change. Sometimes I got my hair cut on the back of a ute.
      However outside one of the big houses the three metre concrete wall was festooned with signs telling people to move along and not sell stuff there. A barren patch in a sea of noise and colour.
      I couldn’t help noticing that the scrubs that had been planted on the berm adjacent to the wall had all died.
      Always reminded me of ‘The Selfish Giant”.

      Interestingly, I was phoned by a polling company last night, the third attempt they had made to get me over two days. (I am obviously seen as a voice to be listened to.) They seemed more interested in knowing how many cellphones I had and whether we had a landline than in which way I was going to vote. This pipeline business is rather illuminating.

The left and their allies in the media are quite happy to have “fossil fuel” pumping rapidly along 24 hours a day through the sacred land of our ancestors blah blah , contributing to air miles , diesel pollution , traffic congestion, sea level rises , Pacific refugees , glacier melt etc .

But when something goes wrong they get into high dudgeon about why the Tories could have allowed all that fossil fuel / global warming / climate crime delivery system to fail and are demanding not only gummint action to immediately fix it , but also even more back up for carbon delivery to be established!

So much for the nuclear option , generational change and a bright carbon free future , the left demand more of the same.

    Estimates have put extra storage costs at around $10M per year plus all the hassles of buying land, RMA constructing tanks etc.
    
    Expected cost of a failure is about $4M per day. Expected failure interval is once every 50 years. Expected failure duration is 9 days.
    
    So the cost of a failure is expected to be 9x$4M=$36M every 50 years.
    
    The cost of running back up to reduce/prevent failure is $10Mx50= $500M per fifty years.
    
    So why do the backup when it costs about 15x as much as just handling the failure?

        I don’t quite understand why you can’t categorise calling “too chicken to show” (despite a family member dying the night before), “looking like shit on TV” (despite a family member dying the night before) or saying “having a dead grandmother is great for her career!” as really crap things to say.
        
        Then again, you seem to have the predilection of a 7 year old towards calling me names and putting words in my mouth, so I can’t say I’m completely surprised.

Just to clarify .
I did make the comment that National has not done much wrong since coming to power in 2008. By the same token Labour had not done much wrong in the nine years from 1999 to 2008.
So in effect the public voted for change in 2008 for no good reason and they may well do the same in 2017.
I personally am no better or worse off in 2017 than I was in 2008.

If not switch your Yankee to Pounds and then by Kiwi. You’ll get your money back plus. However, I did suggest that we should all vote Labour – just because I’m a rationalist. I just voted and my DNA rebelled and I fell back into commonsense land – two ticks blue. I tried…but I couldn’t do it. I’m a failed rationalist.

  My personal situation has not deteriorated or improved for years and unless something unforeseen happens that won’t change whoever is the next government.
  However when I vote that’s not what’s on my mind.
  Never has been.
  I vote for whoever I think is best for the country and will work towards improving the circumstances of those less fortunate than myself.

      You vote however however you like. If that is to be purely on selfish grounds, suit yourself.
      Quite clearly you think must there is no room for improvement in the health system, no housing crisis, no polluted rivers, and you’re fine with people being paid so poorly they have to be propped up by the government.
      I’m not happy the country has been allowed to drift such that the government should be having to act as a safety net to employed people thus enabling them to be paid minimal wages.

  I have been watching this poll but I am not convinced it’s accurate. The Figures for Act, and possibly Nat may be right, but Lab seems too low, NZ first far too low, Greens way to high and TOP way out of line. I actually voted twice, once Nat, and then on a different computer for the Maori Party, but it still remained at 0%. I suspect the large early voter turn out may be good for National, as there are a lot of very pissed off Nat voters out there, especially Rural people, and land lords. We have the most to lose if the Pretty Communist and her Bolshevics take power.

I unfortunately cannot even refer to her by name, she has become “she” at the moment. Lightweight. begging the young people to get out and vote for her. she knows that any one older can see right through her and labour for what they are and what they always have been.
Youngsters always seek immediate gratification, she is out there begging them.

  Chuck, in my time working with St John, we took a number of women to hospital complaining of “stomach pains” when they were in the process of giving birth, but they claimed they were not pregnant, all of them ended up in the Psych ward after though…
  
  EDIT: Actually some women still have periods and no morning sickness, so the first sign is that they start getting a “belly” that they can’t explain, or they get a pain that they can’t explain, go to the Doc and find that they are pregnant, so yes it is possible, but rather uncommon

  Yesterday RNZ ran a story about work visa Indian woman killing herself . System unfair , making it so hard for them , but also the fact that unscrupulous emplyers are screwing them into all sorts of shit .
  
  The working visa holder is complicit in the exploitation as they agree to be screwed in order to screw immigration and get to stay here.
  
  The whole thing is a rort.
  
  RNZ while happy to identify the exploited as mainly Indians , only hinted at who the exploitative , unscrupulous in fact criminal employers are , though they did say this has become a big problem since 2014.
  
  Is that because the exploiters are not pale ? But they will have other diverse characteristics.
  
  Is RNZ afraid of being called racist , or are they deliberately protecting a certain “community”.

Remind me again why young people who are not yet taxpayers have the vote.
Surely the taxpayer should have some say in how their tax dollar is spent. The “children” are getting education courtesy of the taxpayer. Don’t talk about student loans etc., that does not pay the entire cost of the university education. Think the infrastructure etc.,
Those young people who are actually out on the job working as builders, plumbers, electricians should in reality have more say if they are paying tax.
(Now watch everyone get up set with that suggestion)

  There are a lot of things we need to fix, priorities are important and my first thought is “fixing” who we allow to stand for parliament.
  I feel people who actually do the hard yards out there in the work force, people who come home exhausted from a real hard day’s work or grind, might be a good place to start.
  I also am of the view that less is more when it comes to politicians, less MP’s of a better quality. Pay enough and you will get people who are not just looking for a seat to warm like so many of our present incumbents.

  It may well be that following guidance by the High Court a principled decision will justifiably lead to further compensation. However, Labour has completely debased the process by making it a political issue and Little should be thoroughly ashamed of himself for resorting to such base and degrading tactics.
  The High Court recorded that the advice given to the government was incorrect. It has invited the government to reconsider in the light of the correct advice. The government needs to do that wholly independently of the hype and parochialism of an election campaign.
  This should not be a vote catcher. The government should not be criticised for failing to rush the process bearing in mind the ramifications of the decision and the need to receive independent and objective advice on both the ramifications and the appropriate course of action.
  One gets the feeling that if there were votes in it, Little would pardon Mark Lundy.
