“Hey guys, welcome to the Tax Working Group. (big toothy grin)

This should be a pretty straightforward engagement for you all. I’ve prepared an detailed paper of the taxes you will be recommending in your report. (hands around single page).

Look, we need to raise an additional $50 billion over the next three years. I don’t care how you do it, but it must appear that these taxes were your ideas, you know, the result of careful consultation. Of course I don’t actually want you to consult. Shit no! (waves index finger) Just make sure it appears that way.

Mike Munro here has prepared a media plan, designed to create a public impression that you are driving this process both independently, and based on public consultation. The parts in red are the tax issues I’ll publicly reject. You know, to convince NZers I’ve got their back. So be ready to be defensive when I protest loudly. It’s all part of the charade. My media friends are briefed, so it should play well.

Also, your fees. These will be paid today.. so you can benefit from the lower tax rate (laughter). And Remember, your invitation to contribute here was after you pledged a $9000 donation to the Labour party. That’s why we have so many of you involved (more laughter)

      I dropped into the conversation with my old dad who lives in a retirement village that he should pass the word there is likely to be an inheritance tax (dead granny tax) introduced if Liarbor are elected. There was horror in his voice.
      I also suggested he remind the oldies that there is the loss of a tax cut in April if Liarbor are elected.

      How will families accumulate wealth over generations to make themselves less dependent upon the State if their assets are plundered every 30 years?
      
      Family wealth can pay for the education, healthcare and elder care of its members, making a family with assets less of a drain on the taxpayer.
      
      Doesn’t New Zealand like independent, capable families?

      Anyone who owns a house no matter how big or how small is a ‘rich prick’ in the eyes of those who don’t own their own home eandlbufe. Comrade Jacinda won’t discriminate – just wants to take a chunk out of your hard-earned asset regardless.
      Do you think that’s fair? I certainly don’t. Husband and I have worked hard to build up assets and there were some very hard times involved when things were bumpy. Does Comrade Jacinda care? No she doesn’t. She wants to rob from the ‘rich’ (and that’s homeowners etc.) to give to the poor. I’m surprised that she hasn’t gone and got a tattoo on her forehead which says #LetsTaxThis.

  Will someone please tell the usually astute Albert_Ross who is repeating Ardern’s talking point that while Labour don’t have access to the same research facilities as the Government, such as Treasury. etc, they nonetheless are funded by the tax-payer so that that have sufficient research. Is a basic necessity of being Her Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition. Hence they have included a CGT in their manifesto in the past. Plus the Labour candidate in my own electorate, Deborah Russell is a…tax expert!

What is the ”Jacinda effect?”
Good question, maybe the following analogy will explain it.
Think of a National Geographic story of a barren, boring, unproductive desert. This is the NZ Labour Party, pre-Jacinda.
Along comes a once in 50 years downpour of rain. And all of a sudden all these beautiful flowers spring up out of nowhere. Very quickly the desert (and the Labour Party) is a Garden of Eden.
But a couple of weeks later the moisture has gone, reality sets in, the voters come to their senses, the sun beats down again, the flowers wilt and die, and the desert reverts to normal.
For the sake of our country, let’s all hope and pray that the second week has just passed.

Happy Father’s day to whom it is applicable:-).
DPF has blogged on this before, but we have NEVER to my knowledge had a reply from the Labour Party on their stance going into this election on the onus of proof in rape allegations.

        What I want to know is how people like Jacinda can lie straight in bed at night. What’s in her DNA that makes her that way? Was she good at throwing her toys out of the cot? Is she delusional? Can she not see that the policies she’s proposing are alienating people – and she has to take ownership, and everything she says is “I”, “I”, “I”. One could call her very demanding….
        She certainly made the wrong call putting Kelvin Davis in as Deputy Dawg.
        I’d say she’s regretting a poor decision……

I’m now starting to accept we will most likely have a Labour / Green administration.

For this, I do blame National strategy because – by vacuuming up and partly becoming the centre left, the traditional centre left leadership went further left and now of course, all their true, far left fantasies will most likely become reality.

Arguably, National created the monster-in-waiting.

As I’ve said for years now, Sir John Key’s fabled ‘incremental radicalism’ took too long.

A lot of us (including Sir Roger Douglas?) always thought the better bet would have been to couple Key’s mighty political capital with the incidence of the GFC and CCEQ to quickly make the fundamental changes NZ so desperately still needs. Kiwis would have understood.

Maybe next time then. You know – when the foreign attaches are called upon to get whatever forex they can on their credit cards from wherever they are.

Still, one hopes that when all the silly mums who thought Jacinda was just so neat find apples are ten bucks a kilo and full of worm because of the Greens’ organic policy, and Labour’s water tax, the poisonous Ardern will be ousted in 2020.

I will most likely buy a farm in 2021. Offshore investors will be buying many, many more.

    No indeed Happy. You are so right. Let us pursue the ‘ostrich’ approach and continue to say that ~~Labour Lite~~ National are doing a spiffing job and so long as we keep on ‘believing’ and virtue-signalling it’ll all be alright.
    
    On the other hand, it might be useful:
    – to read the writing that is on the wall in front of us
    – learn from the 9 years of mistaken strategy from National
    
    that has led us to the unbelievable situation whereby English (a proven 21% loser) is able to snatch defeat from victory in the face of an over-toothed bimbo who is going to make what Rudd/Gillard did to Australia seem like an afternoon tea!
    
    How can you have faith in a leader who has turned a dead cert win into a toss-up with the odds leaning in favour of the three-legged Labour nag?
    
    The trick now is to do the hard yards to understand what went wrong and to be ready to take back the reins in 2020 after the inevitable cluster-fuck that Labour/Greens will deliver.

        No – I never had a bad word to say about Bill when he was doing the job he was best suited for (Finance Minister and wise lieutenant to John Key). Bill was brilliant in that regard.
        
        But Bill had his shot as leader and he failed spectacularly. It still does my head in that Bill was put back in to a job that he did so utterly abysmally. You talk about your kids’ businesses – if they had an employee who had made a terrible mess of a management position, yet had redeemed themselves in a ‘doing’ role, wouldn’t you advise them against putting the employee back into a manager role?
        
        My concern with Bill as leader was the hubris of it all, at a time when the world is clearly in a mode of change with Brexit and Trump showing that the old virtue-signalling Labour Lite model was losing popularity with the electorate, a more centre-right, more economically nationalistic leader would feed the voters need for change more.
        
        Especially at a time when National were at the end of their 3rd term when voters were getting bored of the same old, same old. Putting the same old, same old forward as leader was a move of stultifying stupidity. Once the Jacinda machine got a roll on – it was obvious she was going to be competing the election. If there wasn’t so much hate for WOBH on this blog he was more or less predicting the Jacinda coup would happen!
        
        At this stage I think we’re on a bad track now and a Labour led govt is inevitable, and I think it’s going to be as bad as the disaster of Labour in Britain in the mid-late 70s. I just hope that there is a Margaret Thatcher at the end of the ordeal.
        
        My concern with Mr 21% is that this was all avoidable. The backbenchers who got bullied into supporting Bill are going to be unemployed as a reward for their weakness. John Key’s renewal was a farce – leaving National in the hands of chinless idiots who are as bad as Labour and we – the net contributing taxpayers, the ones who have more or less been ignored for 9 years, we are going to pay for the failed Labour Lite strategy.
        
        National emulated Labour so much, that the voting public are now aclimated to the socialism that Cindy is preaching. National made Labour acceptable again!
        
        How can you not be angry at them for putting us in this situation?

    No it was ditched because the recommendations were politically untenable.
    
    There was nothing wrong with the policy recommendations of the 2025 task force. If they had been adopted we would be now be a more prosperous country.

      To have a functioning democracy, a country needs a functioning media. If it is one “profession” I find more contemtable than politicians, it is journalism – both groups with a few rare exceptions.
      
      They seldom ask these obvious questions. So, can I assume that many are thick, corrupt and/or incompetent? Why is it so easy for lay members of the public to show up journalists?

  I do not disagree with your points in their entirety but what echoes down through the past nine years is John Key’s aspiration that NZ could (and would) catch-up to Australia. Here in 2017 I can barely discern Australia in my rear-view mirror. NZ has become a well managed country under the current government and a place for aspiration and enterprise far better defined than much of the rest of the Western World.   Based on the most recent polling, I’m not seeing that. A Labour/NZF coalition is looking more like a possibility.

  This is a common refrain on KB, but I think it’s wrong, for a few reasons.
  
  For a start, any lurch to austerity and ACT style economic policies, especially in the wake of the Chch earthquake and the GFC, would have seen National tossed out after one term. Politics is the art of the possible. It is pointless and self-defeating to pursue policies far from where most NZ’ers are, or are willing to go at this point. For evidence, look at ACT’s polling. I have political ideas well outside the current mainstream. I don’t fault any political party for not espousing them because I’m realistic about what is currently possible. This is something old Redbaiter never understood. The reality as I see it is that National’s moderate approach, a bit “left” here, a bit “right” there, gave them three terms. Three terms is a success story by any measure.
  
  The other reason is that if National loses the election, it’s not because they have moved “left” on economics, it’s because they have had three terms, and four term governments are not the norm in NZ. Three term governments also tend to start looking tired. National has made mistakes. They dropped the ball on housing/immigration/homelessness, and have not done a good job of responding to those issues, either in policy or rhetoric. But those mistakes have nothing to do with your claim about moving left. Arguably, the opposite is true.
  
  The reality is that in a democracy governments change. Sooner or later the opposition is going to win an election. National was never going to rule for more than three or four terms at most.
  Some people on KB seem upset by that. I’m not. I would prefer a National led coalition, but even if National gains a fourth term, it will likely be their last for a while. I’m sanguine about that reality. The sky will not fall when it happens. The country will not be fucked or end up like Venezuela as some are claiming. Labour has ruled before and the country was not led to anarchy and ruin. There is much about Labour I disagree with and dislike. But they are not the Communist/Chavez bogeyman some are making them out to be.
  
  The day after the election, if Labour wins, the sun will still rise, I will still be able to fry up some bacon and eggs, and my wife will still be a cross between a goddess and a saint. ?

My position is that National created the monster we are about to have destroy our country by taking too long, being too soft and being too cautious.

National pushed Labour hard left, by assuming a large portion of the left.

Now, you rebut my position, with reasons why, not childish remarks. I would be glad to read them – I might even respond.

That’s how debate works. Imagine if Bill English turned to Jacinda Ardern and said ‘Is there anything else you’d like to whine about?’

Bill would be seen as a loser.

FWIW and you’ll be glad to hear it, I will now give both my party and electorate vote to National, for I have looked over the edge and do not like what I see.

      As noted above, yes National did well in the testing first 18 months of their administration. Since then they’ve morphed into Labour and they made Labour acceptable again.
      
      The last three years are a perfect example of how utterly useless National became – John Key used up his vaunted political capital not on something meaningful like:
      – ending WFF waste
      – ending free student loans
      but on his ‘little-man legacy’ flag-changing vanity project.
      
      They did a great job for 18 months, after that, there is very little to show for their time in office.

Hope she gets the Cinderella Labour Government PR job over which these women are lining up all fighting.

    I agree with you KevOB. This sort of bull shit is already creeping into our society. I’m over having to be super sensitive to the LGBT people. The thing I find amusing about the LGBT people, I happen to know of young girls who’ve jumped on the gay bandwagon thinking they’re gay only to jump off it at some later stage. Also while we’re on the subject of intolerance, the word “Christmas’ is deemed to be offensive and now the term “Happy Holidays” is slowly but surely being introduced so that the non-Christians in this country are not offended. Stuff it! I will not give up using the term “Merry Christmas” on account of the perpetually offended. I would not, however, go to a Middle Eastern country and rub their noses in my beliefs and shout “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Easter” from the rooftops just to piss them off. That would be disrespectful and I’d more than likely be rounded up and chucked in jail or worse. If we don’t stand up to this PC nonsense, we’ll become strangers in our own country! So spread the word – “Merry Christmas” is in – “Happy Holidays” is out!! And I’d be very sad when my kids start wishing me a “Happy Special Persons’ day as well.

The price of dairy will increase, no more cheese or real butter.
Dollar cross rates will dive and prices of everything at the Warehouse will go up…

  Mine moved out to NZ about two years ago. He’s 80 next year and since he moved here we’ve spent time building a greenhouse, a new workshop, taming the jungle that we’ve turned into a garden and we’re spending our weekends getting underneath my Land Rover to help me sort it.
  
  Reading posts like yours doesn’t make me appreciate him any more, they make me wish you could have what I do.

I wonder how long it will take the media to wake up to the fact that the tax cut National promised are well and truly spent or will they try to promise another major policy will be covered by the tax cuts also. This money has been promised to Housing by Grant Robertson, Education by Jacinda Ardern and Health by Dr David Clark and no Journalist has challenged how this can happen.

  They are not only spending that cancelled tax cut but increasing taxes through “targeted” taxes. Just not being honest about where the targeted tax will go, very wishy washy, was the environment, may be spending what is left on roads. How can they say “what is left”. Do journalists all get together and decide in a mass decision which party should get elected? They are blatantly all reading from the same page and have deemed it is “Time For A Change”, or the status-quo alternatively should prevail. Where are the individual voices, those who with opposing views other than following the general consensus.

It is obvious that it does not suit the medias agenda to ask politicians they support the hard questions. What is Jacinda Adern’s background, what are her core values (apart from being positive and transparent), who is her partner and why is he not on the campaign trail supporting Cindy? Journalists assume the general public are not interested and not aware of the nuances of politics and must be herded towards the medias chosen nirvana, as only they KNOW best!

A thought for the day, supposedly Winston will be the kingmaker and will choose to go with either labour or national.
For those thinking of voting NZ First to keep National “Honest” think very hard.
Winnie wasn’t looking too chipper the other night. Who is the next in line in NZ First. with the changes of leaders taking place you could get Ron Marks or Shane Jones taking Winnie’s place in the not too distant future.
Look at Act as a support partner. The Deputy is talented, excellent speaker and grasp of things. Those following her appear to be strong candidates as well. not air heads.
I am not a NZ first supporter because of Winnie, but his followers do not appear to have even a simple grasp of politics, well Shane Jones does seem to know where the “trough” is.
David Seymour did not take the “baubles” when offered them in the last parliament by National, a slightly more honest politician than some me thinks as others are really in it for the “baubles”.
The country would be worse off with Winnie supporting labour as he could well do, oh the uncertainty.
With Act you know they will support National and could well assist in a slightly more right wing outlook, albeit it with younger faces which is what we need going forward.
Not “comrades” assisted by a drunk.

In other words, the CGT policy has been decided and they will prevent landlords from getting rid of tenants. By not selling their properties before liabore gets to introduce their CGT, these landlords will be caught and have to pay the tax.
What better way of reducing the price of homes, than to force more properties onto the market prior to the introduction of CGT?

  Holy, you should get more up ticks. The more they make things difficult for tenants the less private rental will be on the market. I had a rental than needs work partly because of a tenant. I will be selling it. I can invest the money in the share market here and overseas. I have some bonds and I have shares in a couple of syndicated property trusts.
  
  Long term I will have as good return as on private rentals. The difference is I will not have any hassle.
  
  Taking away the 42 day notice will mean some tenants will get 90 notice when they may not have had to.
  
  The last flat I sold in Mt Eden I did not know if the buyer would be an owner or a landlord. I told the tenant this. If it was a landlord they may want to keep the tenant on.
  
  If the 90 day was in force. How could I sell and leave the tenant in? I would have to give the tenant notice and then wait say 45 days before marketing it. If I started right away what buyer would want to wait 90 days?
  
  If a good tenant cannot find a property in 42 days how likely will they find one in 90 days.

I am sure I didn’t dream it, or maybe I did, but on Stuff there was an incredibly positive article about Bill English’s visit to Northland. Absolutely full of praise for how he handled it and spoke to young people up north. My Lord, wonders will never cease. Let’s hope the tide is turning.
On the other hand what a totally mean spirited person this Emily Simpson (partner of Steve Braunias) is. In the SST today she writes a Father’s Fay editorial under the guise of giving men something meaty to discuss on Father’s Day. Then goes on to list the articles :
1. Helen Clarke’s battle to break the men dominated glass ceiling at the UN
2. Three women discuss why it is harder for women to attain power in our society.
3. An article by some woman about racism and white privilege.
What a disgrace. Would it have been too hard for her to just wish Father’s a happy day, a lie in and fun times with their families.

  Think you forgot the other big one. “Tenants will be allowed to carry out alterations providing the property is restored to it’s original condition when they leave.” The examples they give is hang a picture or paint a wall? Sure landlords will love that as it is such a struggle already to achieve that.
  It will be harder to get tenants out than decontaminate the P soaked properties.

  I grew up in an uninsulated home, no carpet in the bedrooms, a draft coming through the floor boards. Mother would throw open the windows come morning, rain hail or shine (she was a smoker).
  I didn’t get any sicker than normal colds that kids get.
  Fresh air is the secret, blows away the damp. Making your home airtight keeps all the moisture that humans give off overnight.
  Check out your bed, if not aired it has a cold and damp feeling, (when you have been away).
  It is simple and doesn’t cost any money (yet) FRESH AIR and plenty of it.

    The use of Li6 and Li7 in the Castle Romeo detonation produced a blast that was much larger than predicted. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the yield that can be produced, however, there are practical limits to the size and weight and therefore deliverability of the device. If I was Trump I’d give China one week to react. After all they tld NK to stop testing!

The USA and its allies then need to impose immediate full sanctions on everything in and out of NK.

China needs to accept it, and enforce it. There are hundreds of trucks going across the border every day.

Then the USA and SK and Japan need to enforce the blockade.

So what if the NK people starve. That is the only way to starve the military.
Drop leaflets and tell them if they stop making nukes, then the sanctions will be lifted.

Fut Yung Un will never listen or talk and all the while he gains time.

There was an article in the Herald a week or so ago and an Island family with 9 frikken kids complaining about not being able to get their own home. Geez Wayne!

Over 10,000 dead from his war on drugs and still counting. Most recently they dragged off an innocent youth and shot him without a care in the world.
