The bastards on the state funded socialist broadcasting network just cannot help themselves.

A report on the 0700 news bulletin trumpets Bill English’s commitment to remove a 100,000 children (in New Zealand) from poverty, and rightly so

Ardern asserts the number of children living in poverty is 290,000 while not defining or referencing any benchmark although Gower in the debate in front of an uncommitted audience (as uncommitted as the ‘expert’ panel hosted by Lisa Owen was not partisan) gave the number as 165,000 and English quoted a benchmark to which National were measuring poverty against.

Rabid Red told us in the broadcast that children living in low income homes is 290,000, providing validity for Arderns number by misrepresenting at best or mangling the definition of children living in low income homes.

So what is this number of children living in poverty and what is the difference to children living in poverty and those living in low income households? Are these two definitions exclusive as it appears that they are interchangeable to provide the best advantage to the argument of the barrow pusher.

What is poverty in New Zealand? Like many others here, I have travelled and lived abroad and have seen real poverty, where the definition of poverty would be if they did not manage to score (from you or someone else) there was a fair chance that they would not eat that day. That to me is living poverty, not the soft cock definition rolled out here to include factors of not being able to have an iphone, holiday (abroad?) or sharing a bedroom with a sibling.

If those two marks are measures of poverty, my brothers and I sharing a bedroom forever until I left home at 18 and went to the Marlborough Sounds at Christmas for a holiday, were living in poverty and demand compensation o’wise it is off to the Waitangi Tribunal for compensation because for hurty feelings and just ’cause irrespective of nary a drop of the hallowed blood of the privileged.

And, I will claim for the non-existent iphone as well although in my earlier life, phones had wires to a wall (buttons A & B when swallowing penny’s) as maori have made a claim for broadcast spectrum and they sure as shit had no idea about anything like that and yet have managed to make it into a money earner.

  Bill stated 155,000 kids live in material poverty. As measured by lacking lacking things like 2 pairs of shoes etc.
  
  Both measures are total shit.
  Add 100,000 more high earners then median goes up and magically there are more poor kids? fuckoff.
  Parents get a lot of money on dpb etc. Cant afford a second pair of shoes from the RedShed bullshit you are just spending the money on the wrong things.

    Yes, there are children who live in deprived households, but shouldn’t it be called ‘parental dysfunction’?

      Jacinda’s definition is based on relative incomes which is nuts. On that definition a professional on a six figure salary can reduce poverty by moving to Australia. Bill’s definition is based on material hardship which is better but also incorrect.
      
      There is a big difference between kids in households with insufficient income to provide the basics, and households where the income is adequate but is being wasted on booze, drugs, gambling etc. The former is poverty and the latter is parental neglect which cannot be fixed by tossing more money in.
      
      The true child poverty level has never been properly measured but I suspect it is very small.

        Nigel, a lot more money is squandered on bad financial decisions and haphazard budgeting. Personal loans from finance companies. Ridiculous amounts on bakeries and fast food. It never ceases to amaze me how many bank statements I see with $50 to $200 spent on such food. When I suggest maybe this would be better spent on groceries, there’s always an excuse. “I needed school lunches for the day, I hadn’t done my shopping, I brought dinner for the night then was going to shop the next day but my direct debits came out (to personal loans and clothing trucks). And that’s why they come in for a food grant. It’s not unusual for a single parent with 2 children demanding a $250 food grant. Demanding! “Foods expensive you know?” Really? I get mine for free! is what I want to say. Often what I do say is, with a weekly menu, I feed 3 adults, and currently 3 pre teen children on less than $300 and we eat very well.
        
        Now saying that, if you’re renting, which in South Auckland is way more likely than not, you will can kiss 2/3s of your income goodbye.
        
        Single mum on benefit with 2 kids under the age of 16.
        
        Main benefit $325
        Accomodation supplement $165
        Temporary additional support $97 (based on $500 rent)
        Family tax credits $152
        
        Total (in round figures) $740.
        
        Say goodbye to 500 in rent and another $20 for water rates. power? 40 to 50 . And then food, $150. Petrol, clothing, repairs or replacing anything that breaks. Savings? Unlikely to happen. This is what happens when they do it right. These type of “poor” people rarely come into a winz office. They do it hard, know the only way to get more money is to earn it, become independent. But as mentioned above? More don’t than do.
        
        We have habitual people in hardship, in “poverty”. Their names are well known at Winz offices, many of them have 2 or more family members that are equally well known. Case managers are well aware when the older children are aging out of their mothers benefit into their own. These are the faces of poverty in NZ. And it is totally avoidable.
        
        Not having money doesn’t make you poor. Your behaviour and decisions you choose can place you in poverty.

        Gabby, I agree poverty is relative to some extent. A child can be considered to be living in poverty in NZ even if they would not be in Somalia.
        
        But a comparison to some arbitrary proportion of the median income is too simplistic, not to mention mathematically unsound. Using tax to lower the median after-tax income does not alleviate poverty.
        
        Also, can you please come up with an amusing distortion of my name, as you have done for others? I feel left out when you just call me ‘nige’. Thanks.

      “Poverty” is a moving target. It can never be satisfied, because the politicos can change what constitutes “poverty”.
      
      They could say every kid is in poverty who hasn’t been to Disneyland in Los Angeles, or kids are in poverty who don’t ski every winter in Queenstown and ski abroad every second summer.
      
      More believably, they raise the bar within NZ.
      
      “No shoes” is no longer convincing so they allege lack of food even while media pictures and video show fat, poor kids.
      
      They allege kids suffer from the cold in warm Auckland. It’s not Siberia, and it’s not even Southland or Central Otago, where if kids feel the winter cold it’s because of the Greenies shutting out coal and wood fires.

  The thing is that if you repeat a lie often enough you, and others, begin to believe it. Being low income does not mean you are living in poverty. I am sick to death of this nonsense being spouted over and over again. Low income families get a massive amount of support from the govt…working for families, accommodation allowances etc, etc. You are never going to eliminate useless and feckless people, druggies and alcoholics no matter how much support you give them.

  I consider myself to be comfortable and read in my local free rag that poverty was an adult getting less than 36K…. a level I certainly have not reached or likely will in retirement.
  So I view claims of poverty with sceptism … being largely tailoring ones expectations to ones income.

That audience on TV3’s Leaders Debate was stacked; no question.

Every slogan or sound bite Jacinda delivered was greeted with rapturous applause.

Bill only got the applause when he landed a blow.

Feel free to do the math but my estimation is that the applause was 70% Jacinda and 30% Bill.

Anybody with the time or inclination to go along to that downtown venue last night is not representative of the NZ public at large. If the audience came from Morrinsville it would have been the other way around.

Never forget TV3 saw fit to broadcast Bryan Bruce’s ridiculous, partisan ‘Child Poverty’ documentary three days out from a General Election (which Sir John Key won).

    TV3 /Mediajerks are 100% overseas owned bottom feeders.
    They employ bottom feeders in their own image: Rat Fink Gower; Loser Owen; and now Lloyd Burr.
    
    Nonetheless TV3 gets $18 million a year from taxpayers via NZ on air to make trash TV like:-
    $400k Funny Girls; the Hui $543k pa (as well as $60 mill a year to Maori TV); The Moe Show $1.1 mill pa; Kiri and Boo $860k; Jono and Ben $1.7 million.
    
    Surely it would be better use of funds to use a chunk of the $80 m a year paid by NZ on Air to ‘independent’ TV stations to buy back the broadcast rights to our own National sports teams.
    Australia get their national sports teams free to air. How about if we are ‘bridging the gap’ this would be a better start and more useful than funding towards an overseas owned bottom feeder company

  Bugger Pike River.
  It was a shocker from the start. The greenies wanted to create a dangerous tunnel through a mountain so there was not an entry in a National Park. Not that the scabby luddites wanted a coal mine at all.
  This was massively dangerous in a coal mine with high naturally occurring methane. It was not a copper or gold mine. It was a high grade coal mine suitable for high temperatures in steel making.
  It was years late in opening because of delays for a variety of reasons.
  
  Pike River was a disaster. In more ways than one. The staff who worked there all knew this.
  Bernie Monk has got his NZer of the year awards and the exposure. The publicity seems to be the end goal in itself now. It won’t bring back one life.
  
  NZ has got onerous health and safety rules that are over the top because of this slowly unwinding disaster that began at the concept stage. Sometimes it is better to walk away.
  Bathurst Resources must wonder at the battle they had over bastard greenies for the Denniston mine. NZ did not make it easy to create jobs but gives electric cars all sorts of perks. Under National.
  
  STFU over Pike River. Consign it to history.
  Over one million dollars has been paid to the families for each person killed.
  Bury the damn thing as a nasty footnote.
  There was not the same carry on when 51 souls died in the Wahine disaster 49 and a half years ago. People accepted it as a disaster and moved on for the most part. Families dealt with their grief privately. There was no compensation. There was not even ACC then.

  I am more interested in the fact that 115 souls were killed in a building that collapsed 10 weeks later 100 miles away.
  CTV Building was not a methane filled long tunnel. It was a building approved by Christchurch council and they collected rates for a quarter century. It was cleared after the Sept 4 and Dec 2010 quakes. But it fell over. The buildings around it stood up.
  
  How about someone is held to account there.
  It was not a high risk coal mine where the workers knew the sensors were illegally covered.
  The dead at CTV only got the relatively low scheduled ACC payout for death.
  This was little for the Chinese parents who lost their only child.
  The miners were paid to work in Pike river. They knew the risks.
  The dozens of overseas students in the CTV building paid for the language course and did not have the risk identified. Then there were the people in Canterbury TV and other legitimate businesses.
  
  To hell with Pike River.
  If there is a Minster for Pike Bloody River where 29 died in a high risk poor concept mine then what will it take for the CTV building victims where 115 people died and others were maimed for life?
  This continued parlaying of Pike Bloody River is an insult to the people of New Zealand who have endured disaster and not had the publicity and payouts that Pike Bloody River has had.

Jacinda, you have been in Opposition for 9 years, plenty of time to pad out your vision and come up with a plan. Lets face it while you were in opposition you were not actually doing anything you had time on your hands to have your Vision and then work out how you were going to achieve it.

    Just think back over the last nine years and think about all their policy flip flops. How many times have they put up policies and announced them as ‘gamechangers’ and then quietly pulled them after being thrashed at the polls.

    If they win, and I believe they’re in with a real chance – then lets say hello to big increases in taxation to fund utopian, pie in the sky, poor quality spending – that will in many cases make worse the very situations they think they’re trying to improve.

Yes he was working but I am sure he could have caught up on it during the continual news, sports and ad breaks that is a feature of ZB Radio.     After the 2002 disaster, Bill English could easily have walked away from politics. Instead, he stuck in there and reinvented himself as National’s education shadow minister, where he was effective in keeping the pressure on his Labour opponents, especially over NCEA.
    
    New Zealand was lucky to have Bill English as Finance Minister during the Global Financial Crisis and after the Christchurch earthquakes. That our economy is now one of the strongest in the OECD is largely down to him.
    
    I’m glad Bill English got up again when he was knocked down 15 years ago. He was the man for the times from 2008 onwards, and although he may not do vision and values like Ms Ardern, he is the right man now to ensure our economy stays strong.

  Let’s – for the purpose of a wee debate – accept your assertion that Jacinda is basically JK in a dress and both are vacuous figureheads (note – I don’t accept that, but we’ll just roll with that for now).
  
  The real important difference is what’s behind them:
  * Jacinda really is the lipstick on a pig. Wipe that lipstick off and all you’ve got is Andy and crew. No competence, no experience. Now that Anette King has bailed, then best they have are Mallard and Parker. If we need a Ministry of Chicken Salt, they’ve got that nailed though.
  
  * JK was – to an extent – a bit of a figure head, but there is a very competent cabinet there: Bennet, Adams, Crusher, Joyce, English. Even their second tier: Bridges, Coleman, Brownlee, Smith, etc are streets ahead of anything Labour have.
  
  You need to go all the way down to Maggie Barry to find people of “Labour quality”.

      That is a rotten thing to say about Milo – he has never even been accused of “kiddy fiddling”, there was a scandal over some black-humour comments he made, over having been abused, himself, when a child (by a Priest).

I find those debates an exercise infrustration. They never dig in to the points I want to be dug-in to, and they then have irrelevant questions like the stupid series on what each would concede to Winston Peters.

My biggest beef that I want an answer to:
Jacinda: You have stated that you will get a tax working group to look at tax changes that will support your aspiration of home ownership. You have then also stated that your fiscal plan is balanced, and that you don’t need any incremental tax from a Capital Gains tax or any other tax to meet your spending commitments. Therefore, can you categorically state that any additional taxes you introduce following the outcome of the tax working group will be neutral, in that they will be offset by reductions in other taxes?

If not, why not?
And no weaseling by claiming that they’re Royalties, tariffs, levies, charges or any other synonyms for tax. And similarly, increasing welfare is not a tax cut.

Small businesses and farms and the productive economy having their earnings taken to an undeclared percentage and gifted to students to attend uni. When uni needs a relook as students coming out then having to do unpaid internships because the degree didn’t prepare them for paid work. What got me was the desperation in the comments there. They were lead by a politician who bore a marked resemblance to a butcher’s chopping board. They had no hope, polling in the low twenties.
But now it is early September and I detect a similar line of desperation here on Kiwiblog.
Politics; I love it. Things can change so quickly.

Well we know previously from Phil Twyford and Andrew Little that Labour have a problem with home-buyers with “Asian sounding names”… well now we know last night from Jacinda Ardern that Labour appear to have a problem with “Australian Kiwi’s” undertaking free education learning in NZ.

Now this shows how immature Jacinda Ardern is for both the Labour leadership and potentially NZ prime ministership.

Whilst it’s “easy to sheet blame” to the Aussie government (on charging NZ’ers for education in Oz), it’s another thing altogether to then retaliate and cause collateral damage to innocent Australian Kiwi’s living in NZ (who have nothing whatsoever to do with the Aussie govt stance), and not only that, limit the education and learning potential of Australian Kiwi’s which will affect their contribution to the NZ economy, the very thing that Labour is wishing to improve (education and employment)!

This is another fail for Jacinda, and I’m surprised the MSM haven’t picked up on this very much (apart from mentioning is passing)!

Gee if I were an Australian Kiwi, with kids, I’d be worried about voting Labour! If this is what they think now, what worse things will Labour threaten in the future?

Then I wonder which other nationalities Labour will offend next or risk a foreign affairs backlash? Then to make it worse Labour is essentially attacking new immigrants that consider themselves Kiwi’s! I thought Labour cared alot about immigrants?

  Australians can come here and, as of right, gain pretty much all the benefits of being a Kiwi citizen including free education, hospital visits, welfare payments etc. Bit different for Kiwis going over there & because they also don’t have a vote can assert no political pressure.
  If Oz pulls free education for Kiwis it will be very difficult for a government here to retaliate in kind without making huge changes to the status of all permanent residents.

In the run-up to the September 23 election, one good piece of news for the current Government is that the next monthly building consents figures are not due out till six days after the election.

I reckon that’s good news for National, because the building consents figures themselves might not be so good at all.

As Westpac economists pointed out this week in a nice summary of where we are in respect of house building, “annual dwelling consent numbers have essentially flatlined at just over 10,000 since the start of this year”. … read more via hyperlink above …

    It will likely take a few years to consult, work through and legislate for the new urban planning laws National is eyeing to speed up the building of more affordable housing, according to Prime Minister Bill English.
    
    This is despite a blueprint already existing in the form of the Productivity Commission’s 500-page report on urban planning released earlier this year. While that report will provide the backbone for proposals to separate urban planning from the Resource Management Act (RMA), English said the “few years” timeframe would be required to find consensus on how to overhaul city planning systems.

To allow this to occur, new starter housing of an acceptable quality to the purchasers, with associated commercial and industrial development, must be allowed to be provided on the urban fringes at 2.5 times the gross annual median household income of that urban market (refer Demographia Survey Schedules for guidance).
        
        The critically important Development Ratios for this new fringe starter housing, should be 17 – 23% serviced lot / section cost – the balance the actual housing construction.
        
        Ideally through a normal building cycle, the Median Multiple should move from a Floor Multiple of 2.3, through a Swing Multiple of 2.5 to a Ceiling Multiple of 2.7 – to ensure maximum stability and optimal medium and long term performance of the residential construction sector.

        So three times that is $360,000.

Labours Airhead reminds me of the terrible Sally Ridge. A skinny vacuum with no substance – mutton dressed up as lamb as in spite of what she is trying to portray to the youth voters she is no teeny bopper.

I thought Bill was very good last night in spite of Paddy trying to trip him up. Compared with the first debate this was streets ahead. Interesting that Cindy was attacking Bill this morning and playing catchup so he obviously hit some raw nerves.

After the debate I had listened to tripe from Marcus Lush until I gave up in disgust. What a rude prick. I turned on Smally at 5 to hear that she was virtually ignoring the debate.

It was a breath of fresh air to hear Mike Hosking at 6am. He summed it up very well.

At least National had the balls to increase the age to 67 (and give people 20 years notice!)

The most evident feature of last night’s debate to me was that Bill English is a real person. Ardern is an image. Bill English knows the effect on real people of policy. Ardern is living inside her own head, speaking intellectual concepts and platitudes with no comprehension or care for the potential ‘victims’ of her ‘vision’.

Bill English said ‘I got up again’. That’s real. We all have to – we live it. Life is not ‘fair’ and life ‘happens’. We just have to keep walking – not give up. Ardern says the answer to a problem is ‘generational change’. Great. If your household is in trouble, from anything, just give up all responsibility and ask the ‘kids’ to deal with it. They have ‘vision’ – that’ll work. Yeah, right.

English’s statement about the tunnel was great. It has improved the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Ardern will do nothing with ‘vision’ – and her road taxes will simply increase hardship on those who can least afford it – on every level.

English’s statements about the ‘boot camp’, likewise, were great. You’re talking about 150 of the worst, recidivist youth offenders in the country. The people have to be kept safe and the law has to act. There’s a choice – prison or an aspirational program. Doesn’t matter what theorists think of it. Which is it? Prison or program because Govt doesn’t have any other choice when they offend and victims suffer. Ardern had no answer – nothing.

Children in poverty. Labour presided over those children for nine years. They imposed GST of 10% – increase on every purchase of goods and services. In addition, they imposed health charges – $5 per item prescribed by a doctor. Did they eradicate ‘child poverty’ or make it worse? They made it seriously worse – and they have the cheek to criticise National.

Free education? I believe in it in principle. But for Ardern to be preaching it while claiming to champion child poverty is everything from deceitful to naive. As English says, you’re going to take money from the poor and struggling to finance the children of the highest paid people in the country to become the next generation of the highest paid people in the country. The poor and struggling can be ground into the dust.

It is, to me, like the poor and struggling having to finance art galleries and opera for the ‘refined’ in society – those who also appreciate bizarre effigies of Nick Smith squatting over a glass of water (and have no conscience about spending the money to create and transport such ‘crap’) – the Red artist class with a supposed ‘conscience’ – who actually are just disturbed in my opinion.

The only thing Ardern didn’t waffle about with a ‘Miss World desire for world peace’ image, naive platitudes, or idyllic ‘visions’ for the naive young was abortion. Now there she is very clear.

Women should be encouraged to use abortion as contraception – not exercise responsibility around how they conceive children and why. Just destroy the foetus if it occurs – if that is your whim. The debate of this, also, as between secular and religious is totally false.

To those who desperately want a child, or even not desperately, finding yourself pregnant with ‘your child’ can range from a delight to sanctifying – for both mother and father. They are not told to consider ‘the foetus’ as a meaningless clump of cells which means nothing to anyone. Should they ‘lose’ that child, they are advised to grieve, have to grieve. It is a loss, and to many a traumatic one.

There is no difference in ‘the foetus’ where a child is unwanted. It’s a life, the ‘child’ of two people – and as such, deserves to be respected and treated as valid. Most of those who have abortions will go on to have children. They can be convinced at the time of an unwanted pregnancy that this ‘foetus’ is a meaningless clump of cells. Nothing is going to protect them from the later realisation that this is not the case – as they devotedly watch the growing development of ‘their child’ in the womb and do everything in their power to nurture and protect it. The conventional abortion debate is shallow, simplistic, and utterly devoid of real humanity for anyone involved. In reality, it has more in common with the issue of suicide than anyone’s ‘rights’.

Are there people out there mentally challenged enough to believe any politician doesn’t ‘lie’? Ardern claiming she’s completely unique – has never told a political ‘lie’ – and never will – is the biggest ‘lie’ of all. She is all image, all ‘conceptual’, all ‘intellectual’, all appeal to those who know no better or don’t want to.

Let alone being prepared to tax everyone, especially those struggling the most, to further the interests of the thriving (economically and socially) intellectual Left. She’s copying Corbyn in the UK, buying the student vote. The only thing missing is our version of Glastonbury – but then I suppose the Nick Smith caricature is the equivalent. Let’s just suck in all those rebellious youth and intelligentsia who think they’re superior to ordinary people and take/make the ‘ordinary people’ pay for their ideological whims and ‘visions’.

There’s no doubt in my mind who won the debate. It was, without question, Bill English. I might not always agree with what National does, but they are real people, acting for and with real people – not idyllic and naive conceptual images.

  The rejected son rightly refers to the tremendous suffering that took place in this country for years, when young women and babies were abandoned by the babies’ fathers and forced to give birth alone and unsupported.
  I know one such child whose mother was forced to give her up and later committed suicide.

    Pacifica people have an amazing work ethic.
    It is shameful in their culture not to have a job.
    But I strongly suspect quite a few claim bennies as well due to the demands from relies at home.
    Most of them are very nice, generous people.
    Just they have some entrenched power imbalances and bad habits such as abusing wives.
    It’s very hard to challenge these behaviours because like in most non-western cultures, independent thought is discouraged.

  Vege, Our PI case managers are often accused of being palangi, when they deny food assistance to PI clients, because they’ve used their benefit money or wages towards the next donation be it to the church, a funeral,or a wedding.
  
  Another common occurrence amongst married couples is that one of the adults, usually the make, returns back to the islands for a funeral and stays there over the 28 day period (within a year) and then the benefit is suspended. Wife at home with kids can have hers resumed, however, has no access to her husbands share even before that 28 days and in my total of 8 years as a case manager, I have yet to come across 1 absentee parent, leave access to those funds so the wife can continue paying the rent in full and making sure there’s enough food. I’ve paid out plenty of rent arrears and food grants to the parent left behind. So wife accumulates a debt. Her share of the benefit reduces. Poverty ensues.

    Yes, I’ve known a few P I ladies waiting months for their husbands to come back from a trip to the islands.
    The older guys in particular are so full of themselves they don’t bother to ensure their wives and kids are OK.
    In any case, most Island women are virtual slaves.
    There is a lot of pressure on families to shell out huge amounts for weddings, funerals and church fees/donations.
    I attended a very flash Samoan wedding 2 years ago and was amazed to hear the mum of the bride describe it as “a nice little Samoan wedding”!
    It cost 50gs.
    Often the nephews and nieces are expected to contribute a couple of hundred a week from their pay for months to finance a wedding.
    All just to show off IMO.
    The males and the old people hold all the power.
    And unfortunately like in many sexist cultures, most of the older women have no sympathy for the younger ones.

      Has fa’alavelave become distorted by the modern world and internationalization? For example, the noble custom of attending family deaths is all well and good when everyone lives locally, but can financially wreck a large family who has to travel internationally to attend the funeral.
      Who are the “winners” in fa’alavelave? Who are the “losers”? Does one class of Samoan society benefit more from fa’alavelave than another?

    Since I am neither a climate scientist nor a nuclear scientist, I simply after reading an article where they mentioned that the limited effect of the carbon 14 fallout was due to the amount of carbon in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, simply repeated the comment in the article that this is why we were not screwed by that atmospheric test.
    As to the rest of my post, it was simply a question as to whether it was possible that all the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons had an affect on the climate and the average temperatures.
    You on the other hand have simply stated that you are a Moron.

  It all comes down to energy because just about all energy eventually just degrades to its lowest form: heat.
  
  According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon_yield, all the nikes explodes so far add up to about 2 million TJ of energy.
  
  To get that in context:
  
  NZ has approx 10GW of electrical generation capacity, so a TJ of energy is the same as NZ’s electrical production for 100 seconds. When we factor in the heat lost due to systemic waste, NZ’s power generation creates approx 20GW. ie every minute is about 1 TJ.
  
  All the nukes exploded so far have created about as much heat as running NZ’s electric grid flat tack for 3 years.
  
  Another way to look at it is solar insolation. In full sunlight, each square km gets about 1GW, so the whole area of NZ gets about 270TW of solar in full sunlight. Two hours of that is the same as all the nukes exploded so far.
  
  Scale it up: the whole world’s electric output is approx 25000 TW. 80 seconds of the world’s electrical generation is more than all the energy released by all nukes.
  
  All the nukes ever exploded add up to less energy than the sun shining on the planet for four seconds.

Kev, in my office, it’s very well known. Out of 30 plus case managers? Half would be Samoan. I often hear clients try to belittle case managers in Samoan. The male case managers get an easier time. The women, not so much. Although I am proud to say, our male PI case managers are very protective over all the women in our office, regardless.

It’s no different to what our Maori parents faced with constant koha donations in the 60s. Yeah it still happens, but no where like fa’alavelave. We’re told by our fellow PI workmates it’s not uncommon for young Samoan to take out personal loans to meet these family commitments. Great way to start your youth in debt.

Which direction is the kiwi dollar going? A number of bank commentators have pointed out that uncertainty because of the election, and further uncertainty if there is a change of government, could put downward pressure on the kiwi dollar.

Overseas, bearishness about currencies like New Zealand’s seems to be the opinion of the world’s biggest sovereign fund.

On the other hand, the Hooerald reports today:

The ASB Kiwi Dollar Barometer showed businesses expected the dollar to average US75c over the next year – 10c above the 12-month outlook from the previous survey three months ago.

ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley said the “stronger for longer” view in the Barometer marks a shift from the last few surveys, when businesses had been expecting the kiwi to depreciate against the US dollar.

Tuffley said: “Our view is that prospective additional US fiscal stimulus will be a long way off, with supportive domestic factors, including the elevated terms of trade and prospective official cash rate hikes, likely to support the New Zealand dollar.”

The ASB, once the Auckland Savings Bank, is fully owned by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

On the other hand, an article in the Telegraph says that the world’s biggest sovereign fund is advising its Government (Norway’s) to concentrate assets in US dollars, sterling, and euros – and to quit currencies such as Australia’s, Canada’s and Japan’s, and presumably, New Zealand’s.

Ambrose Evans-Pritchard says the oil-income-rich, $US1 trillion Norwegian sovereign fund, now known as the Government Pension Fund, has advised the Government to drop completely bonds of Japan and emerging markets (and Australia, Canada, and New Zealand). The Norwegian fund was one of the first global pension funds to embrace emerging markets when their boom began.

The fund is coy about its exact purposes, stressing that it wants assets that are “liquid and investable”. Evans-Pritchards reports it is opting for 54 per cent in US dollars, 38 per cent in euros, and the rest in pounds sterling.

Evans-Pritchard adds that Singapore’s $US100 billion GIC Private, a fund set up by the island republic’s government to manage its foreign reserves, warned in July that it was switching to defensive positions, expecting a “period of protracted uncertainty and low returns”.

The five biggest investments of the Norwegian giant are: Apple, Nestlé, Alphabet (parent company of Google), Royal Dutch Shell, and Microsoft.

The Telegraph reports Barclays as saying global funds have begun to batten down the hatches, shifting to an overweight position in defensive stocks for the first time since 2009.

    While our actions (eg which prats we put in the Beehive) might have some slight impact, international events have far greater impact.

New article from Stuff and a woman has been named and admitted to rubbing rat poison on Nick Smith she is also a medical marijuana protestor . I wanted to see what party she represents so i googled her name. Her facebook profile shows she is an active green supporter, stands with Meteria etc etc. Is a regular protestor who has put marijuana protest banners on Nicks Mp office before. . But it caught my eye a video showing her kids playing in the local pristine clean stream. “West Coast NZ stunningly beautiful etc etc.” And I thought the irony. For a long time I have dismissed North Korea’s brinkmanship as nothing more than a show, designed to gain concessions.
But Kim (unwisely) has upped the ante after Trump’s election, and now we have two unstable, politically immature heads-of-state on the nuclear trigger.
With the ability to mount a nuclear warhead on an ICBM, and a history of selling/sharing WMD tech to rogue states such as Syria (and now potentially ISIS), North Korea presents a clear and present danger.
There are no further sanctions that can be placed – the US simply will not cut off trade with its biggest trading partner (China).
I believe we are on the precipice of not just a large-scale conventional war, but quite probably a nuclear one.
And with the tensions now so high on the Korean Peninsula, it’s also reasonably likely the war will start by accident.
Hopefully the US will launch a preemptive strike that will take out North Korea’s communications, alongside special forces who will take out the NK hierarchy, and there will be a lot less bloodshed.

Maybe a bit late to the conversation here, but heres my take on the ‘debate’.

I’m not a Labour supporter. I’m not necessarily a National supporter either, but I’ll admit I lean in that direction.

Last nights ‘debate’ showed Bill knowing his stuff, although stumbling for what he thought he needed to say at times. It also showed Jacinda very much on top of her game – lacking a lot of detail but definitely resonating with people on an idealistic level. I often felt I agreed with her, but I could tell that once the detail came through I’d likely waver. Detail is key – which I think is why she’s holding back.

Anyway.
The TV1 debate. Outrage! Petitions to remove Mike Hosking as moderator for being percived to be too “right wing”, “National’s mate”, etc. I thought he was a very fair moderator, and that’s exactly how it should be for a moderator. It’s not about them, it’s about the other participants.

Compare that to the TV3 debate. I’d say Gower was a dyed in the wool left winger, but nobody was calling for him to be ousted from the moderators position. While he did well I guess, it seemed a clear left wing slant (my view – could be wrong) to much of the questioning. But that’s how it works.

So why the outrage at Hosking, but not Gower?

Also, the format of last nights debate was cringeworthy. It was less bland than the TV1 one, but seemed more like an embarrasing gameshow format.

Even if I’m wrong about Gower being a solid leftie – the panel afterwards was stacked towards the left. Only one that’d be considered not left. And the direction of political ads in the breaks. I think I saw one national, one greens, and many Labour.

If the tables were turned there’d be more outrage. Just goes to show how much less tolerant Labour supporters and the left are than the majority of the population.

Jacinda on the ZB Farming Show ( a real Labour leaning slot at that). I notice she is getting schooled by someone on her diction. She started off squeaky but quickly lowered her tone to an almost ballsy Helen level. However, the sound bite mantra remains.
