The continued incarceration of Mark Edward Lundy is an insufferable fiasco for people of science.

I set a world record on kiwiblog with 5 upticks for the following…so encouraged I post again.

There is a desperate search by prosecutors for concrete proof Lundy was at the crime scene, but instead they have found
1. Unknown male dna beneath the fingernails of Christine and Amber
2. Unidentified cloth fibers beneath the fingernails of Christine and Amber.
The likely scenario is an assailant in an unwashed garment being grabbed from in front by Christine and from behind by 8 year old Amber. First he slays Christine in bed, then he slays the fleeing Amber.
3. A blood and gore shadow on the wall meaning the assailant was covered in blood and gore, Mark Lundy’s clothes shoes and car revealed zero trace of blood, and the police sure tried to find it.
4. A shoeprint never traced to those known to have been in the just cleaned house.
5. 6 fingerprints by the broken catch in the conservatory. These fingerprints have never been traced to anyone known to have entered the just cleaned house.
6. Multiple coloured paint fragments on the floor and in the skulls, which were eliminated by chemistry and colour as a match to the paint on the tools in Mark’s garage. Yep that was all bullshit and they found his unpainted tomahawk in that exact garage but police took his tomahawk to court.
7. The police notebooks show their first belief was there were two assailants in the house, ruling out their later theory. Always look to the first witness testimony.
8. A 30 liter petrol deficit to make 3 trips.
9. Use of two illicit and never repeated forensic methods looking like a camel designed by a committee to show that decomposed crap might be CNS tissue and might be human, but proved unequivocally to contain cow sheep and pig dna.
Likely scenario. Cooking splatter of preserved processed meat.

The case is garbage and the prosecutors know it.

So I repost, I suggest we debate facts in the case today. It is not too late to inform

        Logical fallacy. I am agnostic on Lundy’s guilt (though his terrible apparent acting at the funeral just about clinched it for me) but always doubted the original police reconstruction as unworkable – which it was.
        
        The forensic evidence, I’m sorry to say that all too often this is quite possible to fake and really, NZ needs proper standards for these forensic investigations. The Sounds case sudden discovery of the hair and the Lundy brain material strike me as all too similar to the cartridge case discovered in the Crewe murders – extremely convenient for a case otherwise suffering from a lack of real evidence to gain a conviction.
        
        All these undermine our justice system, citizens should object to badly run criminal investigations to seem to create the evidence needed. We want the perpetrators convicted – but lawfully and correctly so. Is Lundy guilty – maybe, probably even, but if so I want him convicted on unimpeachable evidence.

        For the down-tickers, what’s wrong with having proper standards for forensic evidence ?
        
        Aren’t you uneasy at evidence that turns up on a second examination after the first search came up blank ? And – after (as in the Sounds case) the specific material that was found was delivered to the lab in question in an unsecure storage device (plastic bag with a hole in it) ?
        
        Surely, if the evidence is there it exists originally (if it didn’t it was surely planted or arrived by accident and is unrelated), so why not have protocols that ensure a thorough investigation is properly carried out right at the start ? That’s what I’m after, I find it distasteful that too many cases have these “convenient” findings – shows a lack of rigour and poor investigative behaviour on the part of the forensic investigators.
        
        We don’t want questionable evidence, we want to convict those guilty as clearly and quickly as possible, why should we not want this ?
        
        The cases I refer to, Lundy, the Sounds murders, Tamihere, all those convicted may well be guilty, but wouldn’t we be a lot better off if the cases against them were properly constructed so destructive narratives about miscarriages of justice could not be constructed ?

        I seem to recall those arguments were put to the juries in both the Watson and the two Lundy trials, Ed Snack. Just as the jury were asked to consider the possibility/likelihood that the jailhouse snitch in the David Tamihere trial was lying. So what’s the essential argument? You don’t like their decision? Throw in as many emphatic adverbs as you like – “surely…surely…clearly…properly”, but they were there hearing all the evidence as it was presented and challenged…and you and I were not.
        
        Bottom line: if the forensic evidence is against you, then the defence has little option other than to run “the cops are crooked and/or incompetent” gambit. OK, so Monday morning quarterbacks notwithstanding, it is up to the jury to decide…

        Nope. I didn’t say they are infallible. Nothing involving human beings ever is. Indeed, I think the 2nd David Bain jury got it wrong. But along with a system of appeal – of which both David Bain and Mark Lundy availed themselves – it is still the best system we are likely to have.
        
        And I note you didn’t engage with my primary point (not surprising given your propensity to troll lately), just because someone like Ed Snack disagrees with a jury’s decision, doesn’t make ’em wrong, nor that they did not carefully consider the evidence in question. Much less that it is grounds for overturning the verdict.

        Kimbo, and the jury got it wrong on the Tamihere snitch case. The recent case settled it I would have thought, that he (the snitch) was lying and was probably put up to it by the police. So it’s not my opinion that the jury got it wrong, but a later court case for defamation (that was won by Tamihere) that did. To be fair, that case doesn’t involve a lot of forensic evidence.
        
        Juries can get it right or wrong but I don’t think that affects my position, my argument is that there seems to be too much sloppiness about these cases and really there should be the best possible guidelines in place to ensure that the critical forensic and other) information is gathered as effectively as possible.
        
        It isn’t NZ specific, but there’s been quite a few revelations about “forensic evidence” in the US where such evidence was presented as scientifically verified whereas it was pure bunkum. The cases involving the identification of bite marks is one that I recall, turns out that such identifications were completely random and made up by the researcher concerned.
        
        Actually I’d extend it to include jailhouse confession testimony. Juries should be specifically instructed that such testimony is extremely suspect and should not be relied upon. They should also be told of all deals that were struck in order to obtain such evidence.

        I would have thought that any defence attorney who didn’t get that on the record at trial is not doing their job! And I suspect the jury in Tamihere’s case would have discounted it almost immediately and moved on to the more compelling and trustworthy evidence. I know if I was on a jury that is how I would treat any alleged jailhouse confession.

        @Kimbo. Had to look up the meaning of “trolling”…I’m fairly new to this blogging caper.
        If I was trolling, I was doing it in response to some very rude, abusive posts by a couple of KB’ers. I will try to ignore them in future.
        I don’t buy the argument that the jury saw all the evidence.
        Unless there is a very good reason, the evidence should be available to the public.
        We have had too many innocent people locked up for years for many of us to have much faith in the jury system.
        It may be the best system there is, and definitely much better than many countries, but it needs to be better.

      I have no interest in meeting you Notsofast, for facts or speculation. This is a matter that is before the court, and that’s where it should remain. My issue is that by making defamatory statements about people involved on DPF’s blog, you create a risk for him of being named as a co-defendant in a defamation case. That is as disgraceful as what you allege others to have done.
      
      And by naming three Court of Appeal judges, are you trying to influence the outcome of the hearing? I’m a mere bush lawyer, but I suspect you are skating on wafer-thin ice, and exposing DPF to consequences he might prefer to avoid.
      
      As far as Lundy himself goes, a High Court jury found him guilty of two counts of murder on 1 April 2015, and resentenced to life imprisonment. He is a convicted double murderer.

        Crap. The New Zealand Herald have the facts and are uninterested. Stuff have the facts also, neither from me I might add. I would never make statements on DPF’s forum that I would not swear to in a New Zealand court. Morgan and Van Derkolk know the case facts and prosecute regardless. I find it difficult to imagine a more heinous form of human behaviour.
        Indeed I stated facts in the David Tamihere case and have been legally proved correct. In the Lundy case my facts are unimpeachable. He should be released immediately and compensated without fucking around.

        I rang the appeal court and they gave me the names of the judges. Open justice. Yes I would like them to understand this case has international ramifications. They must show their workings, unlike the abhorrent 2015 jury. Ask Steve Braunias for his opinion of that jury. “I think I might hate them” or words to that effect. He spent many hours with Mark and others, and knows the case backwards. He knows Mark is innocent, though in typical NZ fashion he will hedge his bets in public. What do you want Keeping Stock for your family? Due process when it is failing for 17 years?

        Yes I agree with keeping stock. I would add the Nigel Latta program about Mark Lundy showed clear evidence of his guilt. In particular Lundy’s grief stricken unable to stand up performance at the funeral. Once the cameras were off his whole demeanour changed to a reasonably content fellow enjoying the attention and ready to carry on with life.
        
        It’s a shame we don’t have the death penalty in my opinion. It would deter crimes of this kind for one thing. And it would also stop this practice of murderers proclaiming their innocence every day until some deluded soul takes up their case.
        
        Notsofast appears to be a person who sees wrongful conviction everywhere. Lundy’s case seems to be not his first one, he was the same about Tamihere.

        Good work Scott. You bring behaviour evidence to a party steeped in hard science. Nigel Latta is of course a serial hoaxer, but it is TV that was in contempt of court. I suspect he was embarrassed they took his hideous little diatribe back to be laughed at by case specialists. Reassuring nevertheless that it works every time in confusing muggins like you.

        Scott, the Tamihere case is another where extremely convenient evidence “suddenly” appeared to gain a conviction, and the “secret witness” proved to be a liar. The police reconstruction of the crime is false, the eventual discovery of the remains of Sven Hoglund showed that unequivocally.
        
        Tamihere was a bad person, no doubt at all, previously guilty of rape and violent offenses and was in the approximate area. But did he kill them ? We don’t actually have the evidence to conclude so I would say. But if he did, a new reconstruction would be needed so that the evidence we now have can be fitted in.
        
        Back on Lundy, yes, the video of the funeral is pretty damning, but I still believe that we should be interested in making sure that people are convicted on solid evidence and not on “feelings”.

        “Unequivocally”? Love those emphatic adverbs, don’t you? 😉 And you are using it to try and disguise a false legal premise in your argument. As also with the Lundy journey from Porirua to Palmerston North, the prosecution do not have to provide a fool-proof and exact account of the details of the murder, including the timing and movements of Tamihere, but rather a plausible scenario based on the available facts.
        
        As long as later evidence does not discount the possibility of the crime altogether, then other scenarios are possible. But if you are gullible enough to fall for the standard “we woz robbed and a miscarriage of justice occurred” legal defence playbook which is applied every time any piece of new evidence turns up…

        It is (to quote you) “false” to say that the police “said” any bodies would be there. Instead, the prosecution suggested it as a plausible scenario given Tamihere’s known and potential movements.
        
        And yes, the watch was found on the body contra the prosecution’s suggestion at the trial. But then given the other evidence against him – he was driving their stolen rental vehicle! – it was not necessarily a sine qua non on which Tamihere’s conviction rested.
        
        All of which you could have worked out for yourself if you had read my initial post carefully, instead of trolling…

        Kimbo, on Tamihere, the reconstruction is actually important. For Tamihere to have murdered Hogland and driven off in his vehicle, he would have to have tramped the entire way back across the peninsula (two days minimum) to get to the vehicle, and would have had to have been in the area where the body was found. Yet all the evidence placed him on the other side – the vehicle side at the time. And yes, he stole the rental vehicle, he even admitted to that (though it would have been hard to deny). But stealing a vehicle left in a remote carpark is a fairly petty crime that happens, unfortunately, rather a lot. Have taken precautions myself when tramping to avoid leaving my car unattended for too long.
        
        The reconstruction was that he was in the area at the time so the evidence, circumstantial because that’s all there was, placed him there with the motive. But the crime did not occur where it was said to have unless Hogland’s body was carried for some considerable distance.
        
        Other reconstructions are possible. One of the puzzling bits of evidence was the encounter that two trampers in the area had with two men and a woman, I don’t think that positive identifications were ever made definite, but possibly it was Tamihere and an associate plus Heidi Pakkonen. Hoglund wasn’t around, he may have already been killed (with or without Heidi’s direct knowledge). The two trampers described the encounter as tense and that the women wouldn’t look at them or talk to them. Always struck me as odd, trampers are almost always communicative about track conditions and the like. So maybe it’s just that the reconstruction is wrong.
        
        But – if we want a good justice system we should eschew the more dodgy manifestations; and jailhouse confessions are amongst the dodgiest.

      oh! I never realised that was the case, I do not think it is contempt of court (except possibly prior to the trial or during the trial), but is defamation instead. Calling ‘X’ a murderer (or perpetrator of any other crime) is defamation unless you can prove beyond all doubt he is. Saying that ‘X’ is charged with murder or has been convicted of murder is OK as long as you can show this is the case (pretty easy to do in most instances).

        Helen Clark was successfully prosecuted for calling a manslaughterer a murderer. That is mild. Calling Mark Lundy a double killer while he has a legitimate live appeal is illegal. He can be called a man convicted of murder, nothing more. I contacted the herald recently when that twerp Anna Leask put him in the killer category and got no response.

        David Garrett, I will be interested in the comments on the message board when Mark Lundy’s appeal is allowed.
        Further, the crown will never retry the case. The tide is out, the prosecutors are stark naked. It is an offensive sight, they should be arrested for obscene exposure.

Please pick the coalition of losers Winston so we can have another general election in 18 months and get rid of you, your motley crew, the Gweens at the same time as dispatching labour to at least another nine years wandering the wilderness forming endless committees to have conversations with, to be absolutely clear on this.

‘It’s notable that one of the outcomes the NZ First leader wants to achieve – a decline in the NZ currency – has already taken place. But not as a result of any policy introduced by a new Government with NZ First input. It is simply because of election uncertainty.
On Monday the Kiwi dropped to a five month low to just over US70.5c. It also dropped against the Australian and British currencies.
Those inclined to levity might suggest the best way to keep the currency down to suit the exporting community would be for Peters to string the negotiations out — rather than bring them to a conclusion.

Some of a mischievous bent have suggested that maybe a shared prime ministership could be back on the table. The storyline goes like this: If Peters took up the position of Deputy Prime Minister in a Labour-led Government he would be perfectly positioned to step up to the prime ministership if Ardern took time out to have a baby.
The speculation goes that this would be the perfect solution to Peters’ reputed desire to be PM.’

God help us if this NZF clown gets anywhere near anything that has any value in this country. A pox on those whole voted NZF ‘to teach National a lesson’ and more free bus rides.

    I would suggest it’s not up to him to make any sort of announcement about who will lead the next government and this has been pointed out.
    If, for example, National stitches together some sort of ruling partnership it’s Bill English who will be making the proclamation not Winston.

    The real problem is MMP, MMP fosters this sort of situation. Three times in eight MMP elections we’ve had this insane situation where NZF hold the balance of power.
    
    In any other situation in life where a tool fails to function and deliver the desired result over and over and over, a rational person would be off to Mitre10 to get a replacement. Time for us to do the same with MMP.
    
    So the madder, the more unrepresentative, the more irrational the behaviours, the more bitter and vitriolic the frustration you and others are the – the closer we are to one day getting rid of our flawed electoral system.

    True TN. NZ$ is at a 5 month low and the Media party seem always confused. They have always shouted about it dropping but it does not have a good look for the Reds that it has slumped. Dependable exchange rates are only a tap away with the XE app bearing in mind they are retail exchange rates.
    The good news for us is that since Deturte has tanked the Peso next week’s pension day will be healthy as it is on an 11 month low. Nov 2016 P48 to NZ$ now P51.46 to NZ$ and getting better in our favour.
    IMO it will rise rapidly if it is a Nat/NZF Government going ahead as the money markets see likely stability. The alternative will see it slide equally as quick.

      It might take a month. Consider the foolish Greens: they don’t want to be in government just to be “representatives”. I don’t see how Labour can negotiate with them and they won’t talk to anyone else. They are probably feeling wounded too with Jacinda playing pied piper and apart from the electoral allocation formula the Greens possibly dying.
      
      How then can NZF negotiate with Labour when they can’t be assured that Labour can deliver the Green vote too? With the Greens and NZF not speaking to each other such a coalitiion is almost possible. Don’t expect stability.
      
      Also the Greens now want to appear to consult with all and sundry again on each coalition issue but may need to rejig the party first as their sex ratio is out of kilter. Their decisions which will again have to accepted by Labour should be available some time in the indefinite future–Christmas?
      
      The only hope for a speedy settlement is for National and NZF to agree.

        I talked to a few people about this and the answers were ”it is a mirage” or the ”calculations are wrong”…no consideration that we could be living on a flat plane…funny that!

Personally I think the NZ voter is deluded if they think a Labour, NZ First and Greens Government won’t last the three years and you are in for a shock if think National will just have to turn up to be the Government in three years. National have a capable Leader now but if they are not Winstons partner in the next Government he will be replaced and there is no other Leader with either John Key or Bill Englishs ability to win the next Election. Jacinda Ardern will learn from this experience and will be a lot better prepared for the next Election, so people let’s not count your chickens before they hatch.

  National dispatched Labour governments after 3 years in 1960 and 1975. National was not so lucky in 1987 or 2002. However National had serious issues leading up to 1984 (Muldoonism) and 1999 (tail end of Rogernomics and Winston coalition problems). It does not have these issues now, is the largest party in Parliament and is in good heart. So it is far better placed to beat Labour, etc in 2020 than it was in 1987 or 2002 but diligence and hard work would still be required.

  The MSM will be besotted and promoting Labour’s “fresh and feelz” changes, gushing articles will be published infinitum about their new MP’s getting “stuck in solving the nation’s problems”, the Greens will be adoringly covered promoting their “clean rivers” and “compulsory Te Reo from birth programme” to bright-eyed daycare children next!

      All good but hopefully NZF realise National received the most Party votes (even than Lab+Greens combined) and the most electorate seats that the majority of the public is for the status quo and economic stability (and does Labour with the Green tail have the same amount of economic acumen??) …. plus considering NZF undertook heavy campaigning in the regions (which arguably is dominated by National leaning voters) that NZF weighs all that up in favor of National despite Labour’s best efforts to schmooze Winston!
      
      Labour schmoozing may be one thing, but we’re talking about running a country here in a wider global context (not some minor Labour/Green virtue signalling socialism fan type club)!
      
      Plus National even in its 3rd term is disciplined, there is every reason to think that this time a 4th term (and 5th term) National/NZF govt could work quite well! Labour are still floundering without cohesive alternative policy even after 9 years (which caught them out in the election campaign with Jacinda back-tracking) and the Greens’ policies will add to economic uncertainty as they close down industries due to heavy green compliance.
      
      So here’s hoping we welcome in a National/NZF govt soon! 🙂

  I agree with you happy. I think DPF in his post yesterday was overthinking this. Once labour is in power then they have millions of dollars at their disposal to give to beneficiaries and to core constituents. They have the backing of the mainstream media which almost always leans left.
  
  I am not at all sanguine about labour being rolled in 3 years. I would like to see national continue in government. They are far from perfect but they are in my opinion way better than the other lot.

  I’m not sure you’re totally right or totally wrong there Happy.
  
  I think you are right in that is naive in the extreme to just assume that National will be shoe-ins in 2020. The electorate aren’t fickle. They tend to keep the faith for more than one term.
  
  Have to disagree with you on Bill being a ‘capable leader’. Roll the clock back 10 months – National polling at 50%, looking at 2017 being the unlose-able election. Here we are in October 2017 and Bill is quite possibly looking like a two-time loser. And when you put that against a Labour leader who is possibly the least capable, most vacuous and most flawed leader they’ve ever had. Furthermore, given that it was utterly obvious that the outcome of GE 2017 was going to be about doing a deal with Winston, why would a capable leader sanction:
  – the pathetic pension hit job
  – an overtly hostile campaign to take Northland
  as a way of building up good will for the negotiations?
  
  Also, I disagree about Jacinda getting stronger. Aside from the much-talked about emotional fragility of ‘My Little Pony’, there is the biological ticking timebomb in her uterus to factor in. If Clarke is going to be her baby-daddy then she has to get up the bump soon – and when that happens she is out of the game for long enough to end her leadership.
  
  And as for no other capable leader within National. Well that’s plainly wrong. The leader National should have had for 2017 is still there – even if she was wrongly tarred and feathered with John Key’s support.
  
  But you key point. You give up control in Parliament at your peril. Opposition is shit, and traction in opposition is very, very hard to come by. Helen Clark was as close to an evil dictator as we’ve ever seen in NZ and it took 9 years to dislodge her!

A so called peaceful protest in Wellington yesterday. As reported by the waste of space news room of NewstalkZB.
Seems peacefull comes in many forms. Lets start with traffic chaos. Roads blocked. Scumbags lying on roads in front of traffic,preventing it moving.Traffic having to be diverted,as main route into Wellington was taken over by a bunch of sickos.Who pushed patience and restraint to a point of despair for our PolicE
Their protest was about a normal business annual arms industry conference.
Just a hint of things to come should the Lie-bour/Green mafias get the thumbs up to form a Government with Mr Peters.
Last week it was the railways union who disrupted people going about theirlawful business .This week aided and abetted by the so called Green Party.
There was the female called Swarbrick from “Greens” ,not even sworn in yet,in the potential crowd of riff raff ,saying people had to stand up for their beliefs. Just imagine we pay that type of so called “greenie” $600 a day for a rant like that.
What about the rights of other citizens whose schedules were completely disrupted by so many ignoramusses. That includes that “wee green” bludger called Swarbrick as well .In fact there are another 7″ greenie” MPs just elected who are of the same persuasion.
Lets hope Mr Peters has the wisdom and fortitude to at least make provisions to curb the “commie greens” should he enjoin with them,or better still have a change of mind or direction,and stay with what 200,000 more people voted for with National,than they did with the potential economy busters Lie-bour/Green mafias.

        With land at $700K (presumably + GST ) and a yeild of 10/Ha , Costs of $100K per site for road, services, planning , council fees etc
        Then costs of around $50K per site for banking, sales legal etc.

        The structural definition of an affordable housing market (access http://www.PerformanceUrbanPlanning.org ) should be crystal clear, Please read it … and work out the ‘real market’ numbers for yourself … based on specific metro household income numbers from this years Demographia Housing Survey http://www.demographia.com .
        
        The NZ construction cost handbook in general use is Rawlinsons … whilst in the US it is RS Means.
        
        To illustrate … if the median household income for a specific metro is $80,000, detached housing should not exceed 3.0 times ( $240,000) … fringe starter 2.5 times ($200,000) … and apartments about 2.0 times or about 70% of detacked i.e $160,000.

        I thought the numbers were pretty well on the mark.
        Here (Hawkes Bay) $700k would be at the lower end for a Ha of residential land and circa $80K + GST costs per site would be expected IF it was all straight forward and IF you could get a contractor to price.

        In other words broadly 20% of the $200,000 fringe starter house and land package price I proved … being a serviced lot cost of about $40,000.
        
        Sound Development Ratios are of critical importance … to avoid under and over development.
        
        You should know that.
        
        Note the Pulte Homes Arizona example I provide above, where the serviced lot price would likely be lower again.

Four people were killed and 8 others injured at Oraki Korako, 20km north of Taupo yesterday. Not being able to merge after a passing lane appears to have been the ’cause’.

There is a call to reduce the road speed on all roads that do not have medium barriers. NZ is riddled with such roads, but this particular road where the ‘accident’ happened is on State Highway 1. There is little wrong with the road. Lack of concentration, or lack of experience is likely to be the cause, not the engineering quality of the road.

The 296 road toll so far this year.

  Was it at the intersection or further down the road at the passing lane. And “not being able to merge”, were they overtaking and couldn’t get back into their side because they were blocked out, forgot to merge ? I drive that way a bit and the road is pretty wide with reasonable verges, you would think it possible to avoid crashing head on which is why i wondered if it was the intersection and one of the vehicles pulled out in front of the other.

    It was obviously the fault of the road. //

So not negotiating at the end of a passing lane but possibly running too wide into the start of one ? Or have I got it got it wrong and it’s the other (North) side of that intersection at the end of the passing lane over that small hill in the road.   The turnoff for Orakei Korako coming from Rotorua is on a left hand bend just before a narrow bridge. Motorists have to complete a right hand turn to access the road. It is tricky to judge the speed of oncoming cars and I’m not surprised an accident occured. It is most unfortunate that people were killed.
  A similar situation existed at the Waitomo turnoff and it took a serious accident involving fatalities before a roundabout was installed.
  Tourists are often looking at signs to locations at these hotspots and turn into oncoming traffic with dire consequences.

      Trump wasn’t accused of harassment, a video was released where he claimed to be able to do so because he was a “celebrity”, a case of a private conversation that may or may not have been mere bravado. Some stories about him harassing contestants in Miss World (or Miss Universe, forget which) but proved to have no real traction as complainants couldn’t be found with credible stories. Surely any verifiable stories would be followed up with zeal by any of the legions of democrat operatives with bylines (aka reporters in the MSM) if they could be backed up at all. So it speaks volumes that no such stories are current.
      
      Weinstein on the other hand now has a lot of people ready to talk about his activity because suddenly he’s lost his power to blackball complainants. And since a story on this in 2004 was squashed by the NYT, it has been widely known and yet tolerated by all those on the celebrity left. Kind of puts their actions in decrying harassment by anyone in perspective. They don’t actually care about sexual harassment, indeed regard it as a perk, but use it as a poilitical weapon to stir up their dog-whistle reacting base.

The Latest target of the politically correct, the Leftists, the multiculturists, the feminists …

Two years ago, the Canterbury Community Trust changed its name to Rata Foundation. Now its added the macrons to the a’s.

This organisation distributions from investment proceeds from half a billion dollars of money that came from the ending of the northern South Island’s savings banks when the banksters’ carved up New Zealand savings banks. It gives away about $20 million a year.

The reason given for the name change to Rata Foundation in 2015 was that a survey found that “Community Community Trust ”was confusing and isolating”.

The Trust did cover Nelson and Marlborough as well as Canterbury, but that could have been fixed by adding those names to the title.

The name change was a mild, but control of this trust at least, seems to have been engineered towards the PC section of the National Party, and the South Island’s fairly sparse Maori population has been given a big voice in control of the golden pot, as have women. Staff now includes a kaumatua. and the board of 12 (each appointed by the Minister of Finance for terms of four years) is two-thirds female.

A new chief executive, from a similar community trust based in Gisborne, takes over the Rata Foundation this month, succeeding the chief who implemented the name change to Rata Foundation.

Here’s the new chief, Leighton Evans, on his appointment:

“I’m committed to innovative thinking which helps create conditions for people to thrive, as well as expanding the role of philanthropy from enabler to capacity and capability builder.”

The Rata Foundation web site reports Evans says he wants to see the foundation to “continue challenge and test itself about how we invest in the community”.

It’s a tough job, giving away the return from a fortune built up by generations of savers – with the benefit of favourable tax consideration and government guarantees.

Are the savings banks missed? Banksters behind the takeover and bust-up said they were inefficient and staff heavy, and they probably were generously staffed. Commitment to local communities fostered this. The savings banks also created jobs in regional towns where often our Australian owned trading banks now serve with, if they are lucky, ATMs.

However, with local building societies, these banks fostered the habit of saving. NZ financed its own housing. Now our Australian-owned banks have brought in billions from abroad to pump into home mortgages. The big New Zealand owned bank that was to have been built from the takeover of the savings banks proved to be a fizzer rather than the promised cracker. Only the Taranaki Savings Bank survived and evolved to be the TSB. Even the ASB is now fully Australian owned.

  On the web site, under the heading “our people” are three subdivisions: our board, our staff, and our kaumatua.
  
  The board comprises eight women and four men. The chairman, Roger Bridge, is active in local community oraganisations, such as school boards and the Arts Festival Trust.
  
  Bloomberg says Bridge’s background is primarily property investment and management. It lists him as managing director of Christchurch firm Oxbridge Capital and of Allstor Self Storage. Bridge is a member of the board of the National Party, is a regional chairman, and is one of the trustees of the party’s National Foundation.
  
  Other board members of the Rata Foundation:
  
  Christine Korako (secretary at the electorate office of National List MP Nuk Korako) and Sarah-Jane Weir, of Nelson (both deputy chairwomen of the board); Rosemary Wells, a children’s book author and a former executicve in Marlborough of Fairfax; Sue Mckenzie, described by Rata Foundation as a former senior academic lecturerer and business consultant; Tracey Chambers, a business consultant and former president of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce; Tony de Reeper, an accountant; Toni Grant, an accountant, who is a director of a Maori fishing enterprise and “chairs an Iwi Settlement Entity”; Sam MacDonald, accountant; Robyn Wallace, director of “earthquake response and recovery” for Ngai Tahu; Elizabeth Lovell, a teacher at Christchurch Polytechnic; and Mike Rutledge, a business consultant and Nelson city councillor.
  
  Toni Grant describes on the web site that what motivated her to become involved with the ~~trust~~ foundation: “I want to play my part in protecting and growing a putea for the future and balancing that with meeting the needs of our communities today through our grants. I am looking forward to being involved with the Foundation's Maori and Pasifika Strategy.”
  
  Board members are appointed by the Minister of Finance, but appointments to community trusts are likely to be appointed by lower-ranked Cabinet members, such as associate ministers.

        I am puzzled by your assumptions about these types of trusts. I would imagine that they have very stringent guidelines about appointments to their governing board, and similarly stringent investment and distribution policies, all of which have public accountability. I work on a small national funding trust administered by the Public Trust. I know that to be true.
        
        I find it strange that you heap such scorn upon people who are likely voluntary and put considerable hours into this part of their community. Why don’t you put your name forward instead of throwing muck from the outside and insinuating some kind of “hijacking” as you put it, simply because you disagree with their (assumed) politics.

        There was one savings bank in the Bay of Plenty, and there is one trust that adminsters the funds that came from that: it is the Bay Trust.
        
        I don’t give a rat’s arse whether your Green-Left pomposity is balanced by good work such as cleaning up the coast. It’s your loss if it isn’t. The coast cleaning group does a good job.
        
        Community trust members are appointed by the Minister of Finance. The politicians decide who goes on the trusts.
        
        As for the trust you say you work for: have you appointed a kaumatua yet?
        
        Maybe you are the kaumatua …

        BOP has Bay Trust and the other I was referring to was TECT, an energy trust rather than savings bank, but still similarly administered. Whoever appoints, it is still a publicly accountable process. I don’t have a problem if a minister appoints someone. They would be looking for complimentary expertise on a funding body.
        
        We don’t have a kaumatua on our trust.

    No forgotten, Rangitoto. SBS was a building society before it became a bank.
    
    As a building society, it was on the point of being demutualised and sold to Westpac, when members at the necessary special meeting revolted, sacked the building society directors, and rejected the Westpac deal.
    
    There was a savings bank down there, and for many years it was the only savings bank in the country that let cheques be used with its accounts. I think others may have followed much later.
    
    There is talk from time to time of how it would be good to merge SBS Bank, Heartland, and if there are any other tiny building societies left, but I fear the merged bank would soon be taken over by one of the Aussie banks.

Is this man right to take offence, or is it a case of a minority person trying to shut down discussion of whether a country can exercise its right to take in immigrants from whomever it pleases?

My view: deciding who can come into your country and settle is a basic national right, and is not the same as deciding which of the ethnic groups born in the country can stay in the country (as seems to be happening in Burma-Myanmar).

Anyone who has followed the sordid stories of Bill Cosby, O.J. Simpson, Lance Armstrong, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, J. Edgar Hoover, Putin and goodness knows who else, knows you damned well better have plenty of money, lawyers and/or body guards before you make any accusations.

Apparently the law is too light, but the poor old householders and their families will be disappointed. Do their rights rank with a Leftist council, or is their no legal way to move the ladies of the night?

A smart council might create a safe, well-lit, Amsterdam sex strip not too far from the reviving bars of the central city. Perhaps on the tourist tram ~~root~~ route. Imagine the tourist-tram driver explaining the locality and repeatedly “ringing the bell”.

  I saw that. The local residents have complained the girls are not respectful and have been taking a dump on their properties, stealing clothing off the washing line and leaving condom packaging, etc in private gardens. The Prostitutes Collective spokeswoman suggested “affected residents get to know the girls and they might move elsewhere”!
  
  The police are always serious about discouraging residents from confronting those committing crime.

    I have a friend who has a property in just that street. His front lawn became action packed and the viewing from his front lawn was (apparently) hilarious. He has one of those trees which kill everything underneath and creates a soft bed of decomposing matter (dry and warm on frosty nights). His entertainment was enhanced after he put an irrigation system into his shrubbery. You can buy (from Bunnings but not Mitre 10) a system which allows you to turn your water on and off by cell phone.
    
    Now imagine this. It’s dark, there is a slight dew appearing on the grass (I said grass) and the ladies are a-prowl. Willing punters are taken behind the low brick fence to the previously warm and soft dry matter of the large yellowish shrub.
    
    Knickers down, mini up, John Thomas out (bit of a quick rub – it’s cold remember) and coitus is attempted. Meanwhile one level up, said friend has phone out and dials up the appropriate app thingy. Finds the ‘go’ button and initiates ‘Irrigate – Full Power’.
    
    John Thomas retracts, knickers up, mini down and abuse is hurled.
    
    Guess how many tarts and ‘chaps’ have been back to the garden – apart from those that like a douche and will pay extra for the flush – zip. Garden problem solved, unfortunately this entertainment option has now ceased.
