There is a scandal brewing at the World Health Organisation, even greater than the one where they appointed Robert Mugabe a goodwill ambassador, until they had to rescind that when the firestorm started.
Recently, a committee of WHO, the IARC, said that Roundup was probably carcinogenic. It turned out they did this by totally rewriting the report, supressing all evidence that it wasn’t. There wasn’t any evidence that it was carcinogenic.

It is no surprise that Mr Browning of the Green party supported the IARC findings. There were also a number of University public health people who also supported it and attacked NZ EPA which rubbished the IARC report.

        It is a tragedy that none of this is really of any benefit to ordinary Maori, whose boats rise and fall with the general economic interest, not with those of Iwi royalty. Have you seen any electoral gratitude to National, in Maori votes? There never was going to be any. The way to buy Maori votes, is the same way you buy the votes of their pakeha neighbours in low-decile neighbourhoods. It is economics, not Orwellian history rewriting to benefit a few clever troughers, that matters.

      I went to Whakatane for a visit. Never been there before. The most ornate office in town covers a small city block. I thought that the local council had been busy spending up at large. But no.
      
      It was Tuhoe. They built a ‘university’.
      
      Then I went to Taneatua and there was this incredible building in the town – council – nope – Tuhoe HQ. Some of the locals told me there is a demarcation line which is Tuhoe country and they want to have a separatist government.
      
      Really? Who pays for it? Do they issue passports? Can ‘other’ nations set up bases there?
      
      When will treaty settlement money actually help Maori Mum’s and Dad’s who are actually trying to make a go of it? I would say…never.

        It really continues to sicken me how people can have an avenue to write totally unfounded “complaints” about a totally legitimate way of living that has incredible lifestyle and culture in an attempt to discredit them and their lifestyle / culture just because they as the tourist did something wrong and then got pissed off because the reason that they wanted visit is not a viable reason.
        
        Firstly, this was a tourist who booked a trip Whakatane because our education is outstanding. He originally went the Wanganaga (university) in Whakatane then went on to the Kura Whare (place of learning) that Brito calls the Tūhoe HQ. Why did he do this? Because our experience is so unique, he wanted to visit us more to be taught so he could report back how awful it was. We do not have to offer this service. We could just scrap tourism and education altogether, however they happen to be extremely popular, and there is significant demand for them because they work!
        
        How do they work? The tourist is a guest of Ngai Tūhoe who are the best bush guides in the industry. All of them are incredibly knowledgeable and have over 100 years’ experience in navigating Te Urewera Rain Forest. You can Google any of them – , Tamiti Krugger, Tame Iti, Andy Blick, Earl Burney. When you google them google the following search term “Te Kura Whare ” and assess the experience – You will not find a better place to learn about Te Urewera anywhere else in the world even at large universities currently!
        
        This tourist didn’t have to paid anything for his experience because our education is the best in Nee Zealand and he wanted to learn more from the best.
        Secondly, The price of entry into Te Urewera is not determined by the amount of local buildings that can be surveyed. Our students know this from the outset. The student in this instance is 100% wrong and has been malicious to then go ahead and write a bad review of our experience and our education / culture when he knows 100% that what he is saying is wrong.
        
        The student is not entitled to set up a tourist business in this instance for several reasons;-
        
        1. Entry costs are not calculated linearly.
        
        As mentioned above, the education costs are not calculated linearly by the amount of buildings someone surveys. It is calculated on the basis of several inputs. Firstly the time of the educator i.e. illicit conversation / per building. It is a total lie that conversations are about immigration controls. They are always 1/2 hr or more. This is policy to show people around Te Kura Whate. The guides time is one input that is taken into consideration. The second main input is organisation of the facilities to begin with using resources and time i.e. it typically takes abit longer to have a bit to eat at Mou Mou Kai Cafe. So once a tourist has agreed to consume the food and made payment, several people in Te Kura Whare have to organise and prepare the food for the tourist to trade with real money. This requires a maximum of 1/2 an hr with multiple people, food filling in the prepared on behalf of the tourist. Once the tourist is set up and ready to eat, people in Te Kura Whare additional make contact with the tourist, arrange their diary to coincide with other products and services available with in the region, request the tourist double check their itinerary before sending the tourist on and arranging the further accommodation. Additionally there is always a third guide (person) on the call who acts as an internal check that the whole process with the tourist and that the community are making progress with their work outside of the initial meet and greet. Typically the third party guide will be communicating with the tourist outside of their daily routine with other products and services and their medical needs. The Third party guide is the go to point person for the tourist between activities.
        
        It is therefore totally obvious that the need for immigration controls is not linear i.e. if a the tourist pays $zero to enter and experience Tūhoe life, then the cost is NOT worked out linearly on a per person basis. This is just totally wrong. The person writing the complaint above is being malicious by blatantly lying about this as they know full well from the outset that this is not the case.
        
        2. Demand & Popularity of the Te Urewera experience & Opportunity Cost
        
        The Demand and Popularity of our Te Urewera is such that each tourist (hunter, sight see’er) has to be booked in advance of the first meet and greet. Each guide has a capacity that is finite. At any one time, each guide can only handle 10 tourists. This means when a experience is set to FINISH with is days or weeks time the space is automatically booked up because we have a waiting list of students that want to be mentored in specific Iwi roles. That person then pays and the space is taken days or weeks in advance. The days or weeks is required because there needs to be preparation and resources dedicated to getting the tourist experience set up (see above). If the tourist then decides after a few hrs from the start of the experience that they want to end the visit they are not entitled to go through immigration controls. The company has missed the opportunity to educate another student. There is no penalty fees at any time for cancellation because the Guides time is now “dead” time before another person starts their tourist experience in days or weeks. Again the tourist knows this when they enter Te Kura Whare. It is a total lie that this tourist was entitled to full immigration controls refund for the remaining unused time people put into giving students and tourist a great experience– it is just pure fabrication.
        
        So why is this person doing this? Why are they making the complaint if they knew all of this?
        
        Well it comes down to them simply not getting their own way. The tourist disappeared after a number of brief encounters, and then disappeared for over a year! After sending multiple online messages attempting to schedule increased immigration controls. Online messages with this tourist and Te Kura Whare are totally out of the blue asking us for a more immigration controls after years since his experience ended – I mean seriously! What type of reason is this to initiate immigration controls in the first place for any product or service? J After explaining that we are not a settler colony of a foreign country where people can experience different cultures, and reminding the tourist that Ngai Tūhoe are not costed linearly, the tourist then threatens us with writing online bad reviews unless we gave him what he wanted i more immigration controls. We’ve worked out that we owe him roughly nothing, however he continues to threaten us with cyber bully tactics by sending over multiple comments on a range of topics in different online message bounds across the Internet. We’ve decided to give the tourist a reply because we felt sorry for him and his awful experience that was priced at zero. We thought he might have personal issues / problems, that he had become too volatile and that he was becoming an even bigger drain on resources. After authoring this bunch of lies and fabrication online on a website called “Kiwiblog” insinuating that we ripped him off and we scammed him.
        
        Why did we give him any reply at all? After all, he literally wasn’t entitled to anything. For any product or service a “cool off period” is generally accepted in all western world economies for products (goods) received as 7 days and for services as 21 days. Meaning the tourist is entitled to submit complaints if the goods or service were not as described. NOT YEARS and our service was exactly as described!!! We could have not even responded to this person. There was absolutely no recourse to mitigate his complaints legally and qualitatively due the nature of the case online (if we wanted to provid immigration controls) would calculated around $ZERO. We gave him a free experience, because we look after our students and tourists where we can and try to go above and beyond to do the right and fair thing in any situation.
        
        We have taught thousands of students globally in the last 4 years of operation and receive a less than 1% complaint rate as a destination. We look into every case if there is a problem very seriously and we do the fair and correct thing for every one of them. Some of these complaints are unfounded and this is absolutely one of them.
        
        Again back to my original point, it really continues to sicken me that people think that they can get away with this! By trying to hold small and medium sized businesses that offer great product and service to ransom, by threatening bad reviews online and trying to cyber bully their way to the result that they want to get even though it is totally unjustified. These people are a disgrace. Especially when they know 100% that our education and our service is the best out there through their own admission of firstly taking choosing to visit and then asking around to a few of our educators. This is an admission that what we do good! Then when they as a tourist don’t follow through on their obligation to complete a free tour, this person tries to hold us to ransom by cyber bullying. We will not be bullied with lies and we will not yield to “Kiwi Blogs” that are simply fabrication. One of the biggest lies in his comment is that our experience requires immigration controls “Go or no go to put on a trade simply based on simple “Who pays for it? Do they issue passports? Can ‘other’ nations set up bases there?.” – This just simply isn’t the case. We literally pride ourselves on our experience being the opposite. This tourist has written this because they know it will annoy us because it’s the opposite of the truth i.e. lies and because they didn’t get their own way.
        
        All of this is quite simply childish and disgusting behaviour!
        
        What have we done recently with Te Urewera?
        
        1. Since this person was on their visit we have had to implement several environmental programmes after decades of settler colonial agro businesses. Programmes rose in cost of from zero environmental damage to over $300 million in infrastructure deficit int the small Te Urewera region of Bay of Plenty at the end of 2016 and then again in 2017 and maintenance projects after the worst floods BoP has experienced in 100 years. This is because the demand for our tourist experience is significant enough to warrant such investment and is testament to their success rates. We guide hundreds of students per year globally. In 4 years we have had single digit complaints about our experience!
        2. We now do more due diligence on our tourists before we agree to take their money for payed guides. We do not let anyone on them. Again, with this particular tourist this is an extremely isolated case. It used to be the case that we only did a little bit of due diligence on each tourists / students. Now we require a lot more information and several conversations to assess the person’s ability to complete the stay. We do not allow people that we believe to be “flaky” individuals onto our payed tourist experiences.
        3. We have terms and conditions that must be meet in order for tourists and student to have the best experience possible.
        
        It is difficult to keep ones faith in mankind when this type of nonsense and lies is allowed on public forums. However we still believe that most people in the world do have enough common sense to realise that this “Kiwi Blog” is total nonsense. Otherwise we would not continue to do what we do. Which is to offer publicly the highest standard of education available in the environmental space to tourists and students.
        
        No-one was trying to rip anyone off. Anyone that has a modicum of common sense and business knowledge can see this is totally obvious!

They are also at a loss that how a Tatty,Low Rent,Morally Bankrupt “Derelict” called Peters can sell out their dreams and aspirations for a secure and stable NZ.
Morally bankrupt,low rent Peters was able to “Select” an also ran so called leader name of “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern, to be called the PM “Elect” for NZ by “default”, who should not be other than an also ran ranting commie.

  Really? I did the Two Ticks Blue and know a lot of National Party voters – and we’re simply rolling our eyes and shrugging our shoulders.
  
  Obviously you had different expectations but the ones I saw and heard were that:
  – English was not as good as Key (TRUE)
  – Would do badly in campaigning & votes (NOT TRUE)
  – It would likely come down to Winston’s choice (TRUE).
  – National would likely not get a 4th term either way (TRUE)
  
  And so nobody I know has had any difficulty “coming to terms” with the result.

      As I said before the election, my vote for National was purely defensive, to buy me three more years while I make plans to get the fuck out of Dodge.
      
      I didn’t get that so it’s time to batten down the hatches as best I can. One deal will execute on schedule next year that will aid that immensely but everything else goes in the freezer. I just hope I can liquidate my investments post 2020 without getting killed on whatever new taxes / regulations these idiots think up.

    But no, back then you would have been sniveling against FFP, saying it is “wrong” and “unfair” and “there needs to be changes” etc.
    
    So why would that be any different to Oldpark also basically saying that MMP is “wrong” and “unfair” and that there needs to be changes etc?
    
    MMP is flawed because the Party vote dictates not just the final Party seat allocation, it dictates the overall seat allocation (Party + Electorate), despite there being two seperate votes – one for Party and one for Electorate.
    
    Put simply National won enough of the Party vote (and Electorate vote) to govern alone in 2017, but for the MMP system automatically downgrading its overall List seat numbers (to that less than Labour, who won less Party votes). It might be how the MMP electoral system works and therefore is “legitimate” but it is absurd and wrong and I suspect there will be call for changes in time.
    
    Seeing as you supported changes from FPP to MMP, surely it is democratic to then have further changes to tweak MMP or look at alternative PR systems, right, or would you be a hypocrite and deny that?

        At the end of the day, what really is the difference between that Bolger FFP Govt with 35% of the vote and a 2017 Labour MMP Govt with 36.9% of the vote as being the dominant governing party controlling the shots?
        
        After all both Govts had/have to get support of the house to pass legislation.

        You don’t seem to understand how MMP works (or are being disingenuous). There are two separate votes, one for the Party and one for the Electorate. BUT the Party vote determines the overall allocation of seats by (in National’s case in 2017) of REDUCING their List seat allocation – this is what I meant by “combined total”.
        
        And sure that’s the way the system works, that’s the rules. But pretty dumb eh and it’s not what most people expected or understood how MMP works. (Perhaps some tinkering is in order)!
        
        In fact when people are surveyed prior to an election, it has been reported that most people don’t understand how the “two ticks” system works (that the Party vote is the most important, not necessarily the Electorate vote). So if people don’t understand the basics, rest assured most people don’t understand MMP machinations that allow the Party vote to downgrade the major Party’s (both Labour and National) List seats.
        
        Now of course this is all perfectly acceptable and fine to you because as a Green Party supporter you benefit from this (ie the two major party’s downgraded List seat figures) because that means smaller Parties like the Greens (or NZF) then receive proportionally MORE List seats in return (ie proportionally more to their actual votes in comparison to the major parties)!
        
        I don’t like MMP as a result of this whereas you do – so I guess we’re going to have to agree to disagree and leave it at that!

      It’s not really legitimate in terms of that the idea is proportional representation, not the disproportion we have with the government while it has the numbers has only 22 general electorate seats and 7 Maori and 34 list MP’s dominating all of that. It has the effect of leaving the majority (41 seats out of 71) with their MP in opposition which is really not how it’s supposed to happen even if technically the numbers stack up to allow that.
      
      I run the figures through a d’Hondt calculator (an alternative formula for apportioning party seats, we use the SL formula) and that would have given NZ First and Greens 3 seats apiece which is more in line with what should have been their relevance given the small proportion of vote they gained. That small change should be considered as one thing to do if we are keeping the system, it slightly favours larger parties but the other system allows minor parties a disproportionate influence beyond their actual votes gained.

Today’s rant about the epidemic of driving incompetence: again and again, when one maneuvers into position, hard left against a line of parked cars, to back into an empty kerbside carpark, some numbskull driving along the road at their usual incompetent, brain dead, snails pace, comes driving up right behind you, where you are stopped with your reversing lights on and possibly even your hazards as well, and there is an empty carpark just off the left rear of your car; and the cretin stops on your rear bumper and then starts tooting at you to “stop obstructing their way”.

It does not matter how wide the road is and how clear the “traffic coming the other way” is.

  There is crucial objective study data that shows that the optimum speed limit for safety, is one that is set at the “15th percentile down from the top” of the range of speeds people are intuitively driving at anyway. Set it lower than that, and accidents are increased, not decreased.

That does not mean they were in any way acceptable, it just means they are not currently relevant. And given the extremely large number of radical Islamic terror incidents, it’s still not equal. I have lost count of the number of radical Islamic attacks just in the last few years alone.   What I keep pointing out (and people like Mark Steyn and Kurt Sclichter are saying this too) is that in left-liberal circles, the whole cultural structure is based around modern-day “liberation” versus Victorian “prudery”. The 1960’s revolution made “free love”, a hook-up culture and the separation of copulation from procreation and marriage, an article of faith.
  
  Any idea of honour and purity was out in the trash along with the Right To Life and the sanctity of marriage and the illegality of prostitution. “Honour and purity” would make anyone a suspect Conservative at the very least, a counter-revolutionary danger! It would not just have been a case of either you screw your way to the top of showbiz or you don’t; it would have been a case of establishing your liberal credentials or not, and being “in” or “out” of liberal society.
  
  So it is a baffling “have your cake and eat it too” situation now, where the feminists and “social progressives” come down in favour of honour and purity! I welcome it, but would like a bit more consistency and a LOT less hypocrisy. There is actually nothing liberals despise more, than a conservative who actually has maintained their purity, including in a traditional marriage. Their whole mind-set is that conservatives must be behaving the same way as libertine lefties, just hiding it and being hypocrites, and worst of all, being enablers of “exploitative social structures” that by definition must be based on something other than sincerity over proven beneficial outcomes.

Unintended consequences.

I was driving back from holiday when I got caught behind what I can only assume was a Labour voter. Dreary Toyota with anti-FPP stickers.

You know the drill. Drives 90kmph until he hits a passing lane, then speeds up to a fraction over 110. Then back to 90 again. Plod, in his infinite wisdom, often appears parked besides the end of passing lanes, so you just never know.

So I waited until the passing lane was over, then passed him on a more marginal section of road than a passing lane.

Perhaps they should have a campaign focused on courtesy.

      I have even heard from cops that they are instructed to go easy on speeders if they are Maori youth.

  I remember my frustration and anger at some dumb cop who waved me over in my Bedford Truck hauling my large trailer sailer completey ignoring that for the previous four or five Km’s there was nowhere for me to pull over and let my tail pass as I had done dozens/hundreds of times during my long service leave towing trailer-sailer around the country. I watch in my mirror so I can let the impatient or faster traffic pass with a minimum of delay … a pity more do not drive that way. In this case I had just reached a double lane stretch and was preparing to pull over and slow down.

Herald article, “Does Your House Earn More than You?” suggests Aucklanders earn $52k a year based on median house price changes. But it measures historical house prices vs todays house prices and assumes the difference is a profit due to a change in the market. Houses in NZ have improved significantly since the 1980’s with insulation, heating, extensions, kitchen upgrades, landscaping and outdoors etc. We bought a house that needed completely gutting, removed all the mouldy gib, rewired, reinsullated, new roof, kitchen, repiled, retaining walls, landscaping and essentially rebuilt an old house that had fallen into disrepair. The Herald statistic doesn’t take out the costs of those improvements including the diy labour costs that homeowners have made in their properties. The statistics are misleading and suggest that those house price increases are all cream and that we have earned a $52k wage each year as passive income. This isn’t correct.

And we’ve also done significant landscaping and improvement to fencing. So the land price increase isn’t pure profit. So their simplistic measure doesn’t tell the whole story that’s all.

      Yeah but the gains from the capital you have sunk, are additional to zero-sum gains you have been making anyway.
      
      In fact the zero-sum gains so swamp the returns on real capital investment, that you should have bought more property (with as little of your investment as possible being in existing “improved value”), not improved the one you had. This is not fanciful musing, this is a perversion of incentives that is at work at a systemic level long since.

An interesting statement from Mr Ed this week while she was on The Nation. She spoke of the hundreds of thousands of children who live in poverty in New Zealand. There is also this constant message of homelessness that apparently thousands and thousands of New Zealanders are suffering.

I know it’s tough for many people. I realise that many kids in this country are getting the shitty end of the stick at the moment. But what never comes up for discussion is the huge Maori/Pacific Island segment from these statistics (glossed over).

I think debating the concept of homelessness and poverty is just going to be an argument in futility. When will politicians grow some balls and debate race based problems around these issues?

When will race based academics move away from the post-colonial victim mentality to a position of actively developing solutions?

When will Maori/Pacific Islanders put up their hands and say…’it’s our fault and we need to fix it’?

When will we shoot drug manufacturers and suppliers?

When will ‘life mean life’?

I would hazard a guess and say…not in the next three years (if, of course the comedy act lasts that long).

  There is a hard core of families where children are experiencing real hardship. There are multiple problems. You can’t fix them by giving the family a winter fuel payment. Here is a hypothetical but very realistic example.
  
  Family. Mum, dad 3 kids. Mum is pregnant with number 4. She is 24 years old and addicted to P. They recently lost their oldest child in a car accident. The father is angry and drinks. He is violent. Child number 2 has diabetes and has stopped going to school regularly. The diabetes is not well controlled. The father is on police bail for assault. The mum is awaiting trial for credit card fraud.
  
  So what is the new government going to do with this family? There are thousands that look something like that.

It is true that some communities are being ravaged by drugs like meth, but decades of prohibition and criminalisation have not solved that problem, in fact things are worse than ever.       This is drug also a major part of the massive opioid problem in the USA. They start on opioids (often over prescribed by doctors) and after the addiction sets in, get onto heroin and the pushers have now found this fentanyl.
      I didn’t know much about it until I heard President Trump going on about the opioid issue so I started to take notice —a huge issue in some states , consuming big chunks of their budgets dealing with it and the ongoing problems related to it.

    I tend to agree, it makes very little sense to continue to allow migration from ethnic groups who have over fifty years history in New Zelaand but cannot improve their outcomes. Asian migrants were prepared to work in low paid roles to advance their children’s chances. The statistics do not say the same for Pacific Islanders – their outcomes have remained the same across generations. It is arguably cruel to continue to allow it.

  Why would you become a sperm donor? At the moment the system allows any child conceived to know the identity of the father at 18, presumably to instigate contact. There is also the very real risk that a simple change in policy would require the donor fathers to pay child support. What about claims against wills by natural children? It’s too fraught.

    I was surprised when I learned a few years ago that WOBH had passed all other NZ blogs in page views. I think it was at the time of the Len Brown scandal. Every time Slater is in the news over some controversy, he gets a lot more views, and then some proportion of them become regular viewers. Obviously a lot of people starved of non-PC opinion.
    
    In times of stultifying PC, it is actually fun to get a regular dose of something that is an unashamed middle finger to the establishment. If the mainstream was less PC and more truly representative, there would be a smaller niche for Slater.
    
    Milo Yiannopoulos is a similar phenomenon. Ironically the Left loved “edginess” when it was them winding up a conservative establishment back in the day. Now they are the establishment, freedom of speech is an inconvenience.

      Why, if somebody argues, and quite rightly, that climate change is not man made but another part of the nature, can you and your type not see this?

Bribing riders is now a core ‘business strategy’.

Auckland’s public transport is an essential service to deal with heavy road use.

But to get riders out of their cars heavy subsidies need to be offered.

Auckland bus riders paid an average of $1.40 per trip, but the rate-payer and taxpayer subsidised this by another $2.57. Each ride they took actually cost $3.97 on average, meaning there was a 65% subsidy.

Each Auckland train rider paid an average fare of $2.58 per ride but “someone else” paid another $4.53 per ride. Each ride actually cost $7.11, a 64% subsidy.

For ferries, the subsidising is not as heavy. Rides cost user on average $1.36 to be zipped across the harbour. But those rides cost the system $3.07 meaning each one is subsidised $1.69.

These subsidies add up. In the year to June 2017 they cost ratepaers and taxpayers a staggering $260 mln.

Far from it – it was threatening, full of porkies – i.e promises to fix poverty which 4 days after the unofficial crowning ceremony now translates to putting a ‘dent’ in it. Backtracking already and the show ain’t officially on the road. Of course she’s asking for scorn to be heaped upon her – all she’s proven so far is that her ability convince us that she’s ‘transparent’ is, in fact, bullshit. Off to a bad start…….

“A doddering democracy”

China is increasingly smug as it looks at the state of western democracies. I doubt it sees much threat as strident “eastern European” partisan behaviour infects the west (undoubtedly curdled by Russian efforts).

As parties in the West increasingly represent special interest groups and social strata, capitalist democracy becomes more oligarchic in nature. The cracks are beginning to show, with many eccentric or unexpected results in recent plebiscites.

Under the leadership of a sober-minded, forward-looking CPC, Chinese-style democracy has never been healthier and China has absolutely no need to import the failing party political systems of other countries.

After several hundred years, the Western model is showing its age. It is high time for profound reflection on the ills of a doddering democracy which has precipitated so many of the world’s ills and solved so few. If Western democracy is not to collapse completely it must be revitalized, reappraised and rebooted.

      Some Acts include powers to make other laws, which are called regulations. I suspect that who can enter the country would be a “regulation”. Other promised changes may not require new laws to be passed by the House.

How about the last Labour government?

  I know some one who was part of the NZ Military Escort who visited France when Clark was PM. She wore a long black coat and appeared to float in the fog amongst the rows of NZ head stones in the WW1 cemetery.

        They don’t stigie. A couple of times I had a bit of fun with itinerant Godbotherers trying to peddle their crap to the front door. Considering we were 50km from the nearest Kingdom Hall they must have been running real short of recruits.
        
        Anyway, a long driveway along a ridge made it easy to see who was visiting. All I had to do was wait until they neared the house then whistle up the dogs to escort them off the property.
        
        They were never in danger from half a dozen huntaways but God didn’t stop them breaking into a rare gallop by the time they neared the front gate. 🙂

Associate Prof Vicki Spencer said she was refused entry to the US while leaving Vancouver Airport in Canada on October 10.

She intended to spend two weeks in the University of Oregon philosophy department as an independent researcher fully funded by the University of Otago, as well as giving a seminar at Northwestern University after being invited to do so by a colleague.

So what did the University of Oregon philosophy department and Northwestern University miss out on? Here’s the answer:

Vicki Spencer is an Associate Professor of political theory. … Her research encompasses seventeenth and eighteenth-century European thought and contemporary political theory with a focus on culture, identity and the concepts of recognition and toleration. … Her most recent book is a collected edition, Toleration in Comparative Perspective (Lexington, 2017), which disrupts the assumption in Western political discourse that toleration is a uniquely Western idea by examining comparable ideas in Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism.

One wonders if she interviewed ISIL fanatics before drawing any conclusions about Islamic toleration.

Or it was Mandarin. One or the other. I am so culturally enriched – it’s like it’s not even NZ – oh cool. Shit they were loud. Feeling quite at home now – let’s be really loud then.
