  Do we really want National getting into bed with the Greens? As it is National can credibly be accused if being soft left. In 9 years they have embraced gay marriage, done nothing about antismacking that majority of NZers oppose, tepid dip into charter schools, no tax cuts to date (promised soon) and not rolled back any of Labour’s entitlements including no interest student loans and working for families.
  
  Heaven help us if they get into bed with the radical leftist Greens in my opinion. Interested in what others think?

      It might be bye bye National if they don’t. I liked DPF’s post on this yesterday, it at least had a positive spin to it. Even though I don’t have any problems with Winston and both prospects (Greens, NZF) are similar the Greens have the look of less volatility about them in the longer term.

    Actually, there were tax cuts, in 2009. And later National did the tax switch: raising GST and lowering income tax again. And the new cuts have already been passed into law, so would be hard even for Labour to reverse (they’d need Winston’s votes to do it).

  If the Greens were an environmentalist party, there might be a point. But they are essentially anti-capitalist and their members wouldn’t tolerate the idea of working with National.

  Bill has nothing to call them over as it has been made clear that the Green PARTY will have nothing to do with any centre right party.
  The media are incessant in wanting the Greens to be part of the new Government whoever – but the last place the Greens want to be is in Government – it means that they can no longer bitch and scream at everything which is their natural place as social well educated intellectuals.
  Imagine having to abide by other people’s rules of the Governing coalition.
  Cinderella and co would continue to piss all over them in coalition as they have done previously – so they are effectively Dog tucker.

The fact that over 800 people were injured by Spanish Police trying to prevent Catalonians exercising their democratic rights to self determination exposes the EU who have failed to even comment let alone condemn as an evil unaccountable dictatorship. The use by the Spanish Govt of such force against its citizens legitimizes the use by those citizens of force against the Government and Police. Laws are temporary and a failure to listen to abide by public opinion and amend unacceptable laws historically has always led to their removal and those promulgating them by violent means. It is no surprise that Radio NZ’s National program and the AM program did not even mention the event which confirms the MSM is both biased and useless in reporting the actual news. Spain has recent experience of civil war and may repeat that shortly as Basque freedom fighters do have a violent history and reprisals against Madrid, Police and Brussels may be a precursor to something very ugly.

  Actually, this was quite well covered on TVNZ last night.
  But it is a little more complicated than the narrative of Catalonian self-determination being suppressed.
  Polls have consistently shown that Catalonians would vote to stay part of Spain. The legislation for the referendum, was rushed through Parliament in the absence of opposition members, and the government vowed to declare independence even if the majority failed to cast their votes.
  The Spanish government’s overreaction has played into the hands of the Catalonian government.

    It was also ruled by the judicial system in Spain as an illegal vote, due to the way it was rushed through without opposition nor debate, and the declaration of local Catalonian officials that they would declare independence regardless of the outcome.

      The Spanish government has probably made things worse with the violent overreaction. It looks like there would have been a low turnout anyway, and the government could have confronted the pro-independence Catalonians with political and legal obstacles, without resorting to force.

        I understood the low turnout is because a large number of ballot boxes have been destroyed during fighting between protestors and police.
        It’s all very messy and no one looks good.

The Greens have a chance to have a decisive role in Government with no third party if they join National. They have never had a better offer to join a Government but it seems they will not. I guess National is just too toxic for them. So another probable 3 years in opposition, AGAIN.

  Even if James Shaw and his fellow MP’s want to go with National, they have no mandate and would need to seek mandate in accordance with party rules (75% of members would need to agree – presumably via a SGM of delegates). There is insufficient time for this and obtaining the 75% would be problematical. James and his MP’s could presumably support National or others on a case by case basis if they cannot reach a satisfactory deal with Labour/ NZ First.

This is a couple of days old and I stumbled on this morning.
Despite the fact that the coroner agreed with the father that there was no evidence that the death was planned or premeditated, Stuff considers it appropriate to emblazon its page with the headline “British schoolboy accidentally commits suicide…”

How do you “accidentally commit suicide” when there is no evidence to suggest suicide? In fact, what is “accidental suicide”?

Can you, for example, accidentally “murder” somebody? Are they not complete contradiction in terms?

What was actually thinking of? It seems that the editor had an irresistible compulsion to link the boy’s death to his bullying at school in the hope, somehow, of creating a sense of outrage. Facts do not appear to come into this equation.

Steve Hansen was quite correct. Never believe what you read in the papers. The prospects of any degree of accuracy, indeed commonsense, are quite bleak.

  It is quite within the realms of possibility that a person thinking of suicide could well go through the preparation for suicide to try and ease tensions but does not intend to make the final move or is undecided whether to make the final move. Such circumstances could mean that the person is in serious danger of death if some mishap (accident) occurs. This is the case in this instance. This is what the coroner concluded in this instance and the media quite accurately reported this.
  Deepest sympathy to the family and shame on those who make other peoples’ lives a misery. The linked Stuff article also describes where help can be obtained in such cases.
  Murder is different. Murder by definition (see s67 of the Crimes Act) cannot be accidental. Anyone responsible for an accidental death can be charged with manslaughter or if driving a vehicle the appropriate driving charge.

    Thank you for your comments, Peter. It may well be a matter of semantics but it does seem to me that by very definition, suicide is the act or an instance of killing oneself intentionally.
    
    The use of the word “commit” in association with “suicide” simply reinforces that.
    
    If you are going to allow that suicide can be accidental, you will open the door to all manner of insurance litigation in the cases of, for example, death following dangerous or intoxicated driving or some other instances where an insurance company might argue that a person’s actions were such that he/she must have intended or contemplated suicide at some stage of the proceedings even if the ultimate demise was accidental.
    I disagree with your distinction between “suicide” and “murder”.
    
    They both involve a deliberate act. If anything, “murder” can be extended to a degree of recklessness as to whether death in shoes or not.
    
    My experience with coronial enquiries is that coroners are loathe to pronounce suicide unless the intention is evident at the time of cause of death.

  Old bloke I knew was in the habit of ringing his kids in an alcohol fueled drama threatening to top himself.
  
  And every time they’d dutifully panic and head off to his place and in the nick of time, find him in the shed, perched on a saw horse with a length of baling twine around his neck, the tail thrown over bottom cord of a truss and twitched around a rusty nail. Saved!.
  
  Until one day the old goat pissed as a chook, fell off the saw horse, the twine didn’t break, the nail held and he accidentally necked himself.

Further to our spirited discussion on VEGANISM yesterday, an interesting article this morning featuring no less than BILL GATES and RICHARD BRANSON promoting lab-grown meat!
As I recall, the article says “people the world over love meat”
(damn!!!), and lab-grown meat addresses the problems of the environment, ANIMAL WELFARE, and …something else that are currently obstacles to producing meat for the world market.

        I live in a vegetarian household (all except me), so I am very familiar with how tasty veg food can be.
        
        But killing other animals is part of our DNA. Even by vegetarian son hunts.

  Even if they one day manage to make this lab meat with a plant-based culture, plants that form the feedstock for lab meat still have to be grown in farms and that still needs farming etc.

    That is the difference.

        Currently the state of play with lab meat is that it needs to be made out of dead animals. From what I read that is “fetal bovine serum”. If that is aborted baby cows you’re going to need to kill off a quite a few baby cows to make one bbq.
        
        So that means, say, 5 cows need to be made pregnant and fed for a few months to harvest enough “fetal bovine serum” for a few burgers.
        
        That’s more animals that must suffer and more grazing required per burger than the current meat making technology.
        
        Of course they might be able to improve things, but that’s likely a long way off still.

        Branson reckons in 30 years we won’t need to kill any animals for meat.

  The truth is Maori tribal life pre European was bloody scary. The ground a tribe occupied today could be taken tomorrow by another tribe, and the blood would flow with bodies being dismembered, children slain and women raped. There was little noble about Maori life back then, just sheer savagery and a complete absence of sympathy.

    From what I have read, women taken in attacks on pas often became additional “slave wives” to victorious chiefs.
    Also, women were apparently preferred for cannibal feasts…perhaps they were less tough.
    I have never read anything about what happened to the children and babies of a vanquished tribe.
    Too terrible to talk about maybe.

  Well it’s actually nice to be back in the underdog role!!!!
  
  And no, I can’t see us prevailing against all of those teams. Looking at Win-Loss you’d have to pick the Dodgers, Nationals in the NL, or the Indians & Astros in the AL to beat the Cubs in a 7 game series.
  
  But as we both know, those don’t always mean much between the top teams. Hell, in 2015 none of the three top teams in all of baseball (Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs) even made it to the WS, that task being left to the lowly Mets with their 90 win season!!!
  
  And look how close it was last year for the Cubs when they were the 103 win monsters!
  
  Nevertheless I’m looking forward to it all and will be booking the MLB.TV post-season streaming package in the next few days. I’m especially looking forward to the National’s, since they’ve been so good for the last three seasons, especially their pitching. Can the curse of the Senators continue to dog teams from the Capital?
  
  And then there’s the Indians. If the Cubs don’t make it to the WS I’ll be cheering all the way for the poor bastards from the “Mistake By The Lake”.

    Yes, Cleveland will be the sentimental favourites to win after last year. Last World Series win was 1948 which is now the longest “between drinks” stretch for one franchise in the same city, although a team from DC hasn’t won since 1924.

      Well DC is kind of funny-sad, in that they’ve had not one but two Senator teams that have failed in the city – but then moved on to success in other places: the Twins and the Rangers.
      
      But I still think the Nationals can wait their turn compared to the Indians.

  And there is the fact that the Cubs have had a superb 2nd half to the season: 49-25. I’m happier carrying that sort of form into the post-season than the likes of the National and Dodger fans with their respective late season fades and faceplants!
  
  And lets not forget the Wildcard “scrubbers”, the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks. Hell, the latter have a record that would have seen them winning the Cub’s division! Only because they’re in the West with the Dodgers and their insane record, can a team like the D’s have a 93 win record – and still be eleven games behind the winner!!!

      Nope. As I explained long. long ago when first revealing my dreadful secret, I actually have no loathing for the Yankees at all. They’re a classy outfit – especially now that Steinbrenner is no more.
      
      Of course, that does not mean I will be cheering them on: I will support any team that goes up against them. But that’s simply because they’re atop the pile with all those WS wins. Until others close the gap (sometime over the 21st century???) on that record I’ll cheer any Yankee opponent – whilst still respecting them.
      
      Besides – how can you hate a team that gives a player with the surname, Judge, the nickname, ALL RISE. I mean come on – that’s funny.

Electric car owners ‘can drive for free by letting energy firms use battery’

Electric car owners will be paid for letting an energy company use their vehicle’s battery in a pioneering scheme to increase take-up of the cleaner vehicles and help power grids manage the growth in green energy.

Nissan and one of the UK’s biggest challenger energy suppliers, Ovo, will offer the “vehicle-to-grid” service to buyers of the Japanese carmaker’s new Leaf from next year.

After installing a special charger in a customer’s home, the supplier will take over the management of the car’s battery, with owners able to set a minimum amount of charge they want for driving the next day. Ovo will then automatically trade electricity from the battery, topping it up during off-peak periods when power costs about 4p per kilowatt hour (kWh), and selling it at peak times for about four times as much.

The Ovo chief executive, Stephen Fitzpatrick, said the savings would cover the £350-£400 annual cost of charging an electric car. “Being able to feed back into the grid will mean that customers will be able to drive for free,” he said.

    At night, when electricity demand is at its lowest. During the day, when electricity demand peaks, the vehicles will probably be on the road or in the city waiting to be driven home.
    
    Getting the power into the grid at peak demand will be the problem. Or the cars would come with a rubber band to get them home each evening.
    
    Regardless, the question arises, when will you charge your car batteries, Griff, if you are still on your own solar power? Is the choice for you: hook up to the grid, OR become a night ~~rider~~ driver?

      This makes more sense than Griff’s mass power storage in car batteries: 100MW plus storage batteries run by power companies.
      
      Better still would be more water storage for our hydro dams. This would allow more flexible hydro power. NZ’s hydro dams are mostly low storage compared with their equivalents in countries such as Norway.
      
      Our problem is partly topography – lack of suitable valleys – and partly that we (in my view correctly) are reluctant to ruin the environment to get greater hydro storage. The decision not to raise Lake Manapouri is an example.
      
      An intelligent way forward would be to use our natural gas from inshore, and gas fracked from coal seams, to generate power to meet peaks in demand.

    How far do you expect a car to last?
    At 200,000 k’s most modern cars are beginning to cost more to maintain than their value.
    For a Tesla S 200,000km still 90% battery capacity remaining.

    Degradation of battery life is a lot more complex than charge cycles it also depends on rate and capacity.
    Cycling a modern li iron battery from 40% to 80% at a fraction of C has little impact of life compared to fast charging to 100% and draining to zero at a high rate.
    
    Any degradation in capacity effects your cars resale.
    Something you would have to take into consideration before taking part, along with the times you are able to be plugged in to the grid system.
    
    So called peaker plants are the most expensive electricity. Often gas or oil powered the fact peaking plants must respond quickly rules out efficiency gains like combined cycle were exhaust heat is recovered.
    
    Having peaking provided cheaper by such a solution will make power cheaper over all.
    
    Perversely
    In places where solar has high saturation power is cheapest during the day.
    
    The world is changing.
    This conversation about electric cars will be moot in less than a decade.

      You still have to stump up NZD$30k for a 100kWh battery pack in 10 years assuming that it comes down to $300/kWh retail). Investing that same amount would pay most people’s yearly fuel bills. And then you are carrying around a whole lot of extra cost/weight/capacity that you hardly ever use.
      
      Electricity is not yet being taxed ~200% that way that petrol is, but if EV vehicles become common then it will be.
      
      Electric cars will not be that much cheaper to maintain, given a large proportion of all maintenance is for electronics, windows, climate control, brakes, suspension, bodywork, tyres, CV’s etc that will still be on the car.
      
      EV’s have far lower utility for occasional long-trips and remote locations due to long charging times and worse charging infrastructure.
      
      There is the potentially daily inconvenience of having to plug them in and unplug them + vast charging infrastructure to be installed and maintained (vs a few petrol stations).
      
      We can afford to change to EV’s for reasons of fashion, but doesn’t mean it makes rational sense from a utility or cost perspective – at least until robotic battery swapping is pervasive.

        You would still have 90% capacity at ten years why would you want to replace it?
        
        There is already an industry here renovating hybrid battery’s. A renovating industry will develop for electric cars batterys.
        The battery still has value even if it capacity degrades past 75% for off grid and grid feed storage.
        Once no longer useful it will get recycled.
        
        An ICE car at around 200,000km’s the entire motive system is beginning to reach the end of its design life.
        Two many critical parts subject to excessive cycles.
        Many cars end up being discarded due to mechanical failures that are more costly to fix than the car is worth.

      An electric car has a higher foot print from construction.
      It is more than recovered over the life of the car.
      An Electric car does not have oil changes, filters,cambelts,spark plugs, injectors and hundreds of critical wearing parts under load .
      
      An Electric Car travels further on the energy needed to refine a gallon of gas than an ICE engine will get you on that gallon.
      
      I don’t know were you come from. Here in NZ our grid electricity is more than 85% hydro ,geothermal and other renewable’s .

Political expenses: Should we pay for our politicians to attend the grand final?

Each year, there are a few predictable weekends when our federal parliamentarians seem to find themselves in Melbourne for official duties. Coincidently, they are the same weekends as the AFL grand final, the Melbourne Cup and the finals of the Australian Open.

This year’s political chutzpah prize is likely to be awarded to *drum roll* Julie Bishop:

“The AFL is a significant international event and I support political leaders – the Prime Minister and Bill Shorten and others – attending the AFL grand final to show our support for this game and for the organisation,” she told the ABC’s Insiders program. “As Foreign Minister I work very closely with the AFL in our aid program, bringing the AFL sport to the Asia-Pacific. It is part of our aid program in the Pacific island nations. I was invited in my official capacity as a partner of the AFL and I was pleased to attend.”

So there you have it. Julie Bishop was pleased to attend. I’m sure everyone in the “Pacific island nations” was pleased she attended on behalf of them too!

    It’s hard to find specific information. Going back to 2004, it seems that the Solomon Island Australian Football Association was the grateful beneficiary of overseas assistance:

I think the events in Vegas have shown one of the reasons why a constitution would be a bad idea. What seems great and appropriate when the document is written become outdated and eventually a noose around the collective necks of the population.

It was interesting watching The Chase tonight with a Muslim girl as contestant. The normal hugging was absent except at the end when they won, although the male contestant just brushed her arm. Bradley couldn’t usher her back to her seat with a touch on the shoulders as he normally does. She looked quite uncomfortable at times with her nervous grins. Her father or brother would probably have been in the audience monitoring her behaviour. Diversity at work, but not very enjoyable.

  I saw her – I was waiting for the news at 5:56pm. Didn’t want to see ugly stupid muslim women so I ‘quartered’ the screen with EPG function – and when that wasn’t enough – full screen listings with sound almost off.
  
  If not already – soon you’ll see ragheads added to Coro St / Eastenders and other programmes – to be ‘inclusive’. I can’t wait for that (don’t watch them anyway).
  
  I also can’t wait for a non-bullshit version of Shortland St where half the cast don’t speak English and are subtitled.
