I note with concern the issue coming out of Australia about Dad’s using ‘Parent’ rooms. Apparently women don’t like this. Now I may be a little dim (steady Gobby) but doesn’t the term parent usually mean man and woman (LGB thing not included).

What I suspect you think is toxic is an unwillingness to agree with you because you think we have something culturally in common. So what?         You originally went ballistic with me because I shared what I had observed Maori women saying to their kids especially daughters, which seemed very inappropriate and abusive.
        I had a little Maori girl try to commit suicide close to my home recently.
        Maybe she was a victim of what I see as abusive parenting by SOME Maori.
        I never accused YOU of abusive parenting.
        Apparently I am not permitted to proffer my opinion on a serious social issue.
        How do you know I asked your opinion as a Maori or as a person?
        Did I say that?
        Maori don’t seem to want to own up to what is wrong in their culture, yet no-one else is permitted to comment.
        As you have chosen to reveal your ethnicity, why are you so sensitive about others asking about your culture?
        I revealed I am vegequarian expecting to be asked questions about the subject.
        I didn’t realise asking a “wahine” about her culture was somehow “taboo”.
        I’m not being “racist” or “sexist” or anything else.
        I just want to know why our Maori citizens have such appalling statistics for child abuse/neglect and imprisonment etc.
        And I prefer not to be abused when I ask.

        What you have asked, I have responded to yourself, many an occasion. You have never acknowledged those responses.
        
        I do not have all the answers. I’m just a 54 yr old mum and nana responding to a need as best I can.
        
        You state I originally went ballistic at you? That must have been been so important to you because I really don’t recall. I do recall your early postings being about large Maori families, and absent fathers, none which I would refute.
        
        In regard to why Maori have such appalling statistics, I could quote academic reasonings but I see those as excuses. My own thoughts and from my own experiences, tell me this. The urban drift for Maori saw them disconnected from their whenua, their land. Slowly but surely they became disconnected. While they were working, full employment for everyone, they didn’t notice so much. Home ownership was common. Large families in the 70s actually became a thing only Catholics and PIs did. Then came the mass unemployment in the public sector, rail, post, forestry and also with meat works.
        
        No work, home more with family, no money, disconnected from their tribe, extended family, whenua. Traditional parenting skills weren’t past on, child neglect became more frequent and as men left their families or women forced them out, Maori became reliant on benefits.
        
        Maori aren’t stupid. Many figured out very early that you can actually survive ok on a benefit without the need to work. So they did. Trouble is they’d seen their parents party hard when they could afford to and thought they could continue to do so. Drink, fight, sex. That was always the sign you had a good night. And often pregnancy followed. Before you known it you’ve got 6 plus kids under the age of 25, fathers unknown. You can’t cope, you go out and drown your sorrows with a man who has had the same upbringing, bring him home, recipe for disaster. Neglect turns into abuse, physical and sexual. Kick him out, wash, rinse, repeat cycle.
        
        I have literally dozens of young Maori on my caseload that fit into the above. The ones that make it into their 20s childless are almost considered success stories by the ministry, barren by their peers. Too many are also suffering alcohol fetal syndrome. I have others in their 30s, 7, 8,9 kids, none in their care. 40 year olds, worked 20 odd years ago maybe, but are 2nd generational beneficiaries. These are often the ones that encourage their daughters to have children because it’s easier money, and sadly, it’s all they think their daughters are capable of. Tall poppy syndrome is also very alive in too many Maori.
        
        And because these boys are often the result of an absent father, there’s no one around to teach them how to be a man. If he is, he’s probably beating the shit out of him.
        
        You have asked me many a time what do I do about the above. This is what annoys me about you go vege. You give the impression that I have a universal solution. However, this again what I do.
        
        I am a case manager for winz in the south Auckland area. I help those who need help. And often those who I feel, don’t. I advise how they can do better. I encourage them to upskill, educate, look for employment, make better choices. The same things I did and do for my grown sons, all my moko and youngest boy. Same thing I do for the foster children that come and go into my care.
        
        Now go vege, my day has already began, as many a single working mum. My boy is better so I’m off to work. And this will be the last time I will respond to your “why do maori” rhetoric.

        I do not expect you to have the answers, but you obviously have a great deal of knowledge about the situation for many Maori.
        The only thing I feel you have left out is the sexism prevalent in Maori society.
        I recall Donna Awatere-Huata saying that the greatest benefit for her family of moving to the city (from the countryside) was that for the first time, they could call the police when her father started to beat them up.
        Maori culture (like all Polynesian cultures) expects women to be subservient to men.
        Then the women, as you say, pass this on to their daughters, expecting nothing better from them than a life on the benefit as a solo mum.
        I found it very hard to watch Metaria Turei being abused by all and sundry for some very minor benefit fraud, when she has worked hard to educate herself instead of sitting back and languishing on the DPB.
        I wonder if she would have received the same level as abuse if she had been Pakeha.
        Anyway I’ve got to get to work too.
        Good on you for doing your best to encourage other Maori to aim for better in life.

    Look at the much higher rate of females getting a tertiary education and professional careers now that the education industry has been feminised.
    
    Look at horrific outcomes for male children in solo mother families.

      What is amusing is that most things to do with feminist equality are of women attempting to be the same as men – as though men are the benchmark that women aspire to and want to be like. They want to compete with men at doing manly things.

        The trouble is that quite a lot of women don’t have much of a maternal instinct, which is the main way the sexes differ.
        And even very maternal women can go nuts stuck in the house with young kids all day.

      The outcomes are not good for many female children in solo mother families either Jazz.
      The job of a father is to support and protect his kids and wife, and give his sons guidance and a good role model.
      Now the state is there to take the place of dads, they have been made redundant.
      We do have a big problem with family violence in this country, but divorce and reliance on state handouts is not the solution.

        I have been supporting myself since I was 16, with just a brief period on state support for a very good reason.
        It’s true also that we had WFF for a few years, which was a Godsend with 4 teenagers.

I think there has to be a lot of credit given to National and Bill English in the post election drama of who will form the next Government, for a dull uninspiring Leader as some on here have labelled him he has been positive, sensible and happy when confronted by the media with also praising NZ First and Winston when warranted. This did not change this morning with his answer to the media when asked about the negotiations saying I am confident that I will still be Prime Minister after a Government has been formed.

        This was the first time I had seen her and I was surprised.
        
        As a good friend remarked she could eat an apple through a tennis racquet.

    Let’s not forget National’s reduction to 44.4% after the special votes were counted is simply because of the way the MMP system reduces (National’s) List seat allocation simply to maintain overall proportionality (of the combined List + Electorate seat vote) rather than simply maintaining proportionality of the List seat vote only (like SM would).
    
    In essence National is “punished” for being “too popular” by winning the majority of the Electorate seats (41 out of a total of 71). Plus because of it’s high List vote.
    
    In terms of the special votes, National gained around 153,262 by my calculations or 36.31% of the special votes, whereas say for example the Greens gained a “mere” 35,448 (or 8.40%), but again because of the idiosyncrasies of the MMP system then National lost 2 seats and the Greens gained 1 seat.
    
    Interestingly this puts a different perspective on the Greens doing well in special votes, sure they do (although no where as well as both National and Labour) but for small parties like the Greens any special vote increase is a bonus and will play into their favor, especially if they don’t have Electorate seats.
    
    No wonder why the Greens and MMP’s campaigners like the MMP system!
    
    For National (and Labour) i.e. the major parties, MMP is a “flawed” system as it reduces their seat allocations. As others pointed out yesterday, the SM voting system, which is near identical to MMP, irons out these “flaws” (of maintain proportionality) entirely to make it fairer.

Heard “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern raving on about the coalition talks are going. She ranted she was all set for a “Stable Durable Coalition Government”
At almost the same time the latest recruit from the special votes to join the Toxic Green Party supporters of benefit fraud was a “defacto” refugee who is aged 36 came to NZ when she was nine years old. and has been enjoying the privileges and benefits of NZ since then.
Her rant and rave was all about climate change inequality,poverty. Of course no mention of the $160,000 Dollars as a Green Party parasite MP, she would get off the NZs taxpayers for getting the benefits of MMP yet refusing to enter into the spirit of it,such as National ,Labour and NZF.
Special mention to Mr Peters. A coalition with people like her who want to rule the roost and Government, as well as the rest of her sisters in an almost female coven known as the Green Party.
Be afraid be very afraid life is too short. Just imagine Winston with “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern and the defacto refugee called “Ghahraman” in full flight in a coalition ,you will wish you had gone with Bill Englishs’ tame National Party. Not too many screaming skulls or nashing teeth in Bills lot.

    Yes, but if National and NZF form a coalition this term, it will end just as badly for National as each previous coalition involving NZF has hurt the major party, so we’ll end up with left wing government for 2 or 3 terms after that!
    
    And on top of that, it won’t energise people against MMP.
    
    I think National should play ultra-hard ball in the negotiations, make NZF choose Labour and the Watermelons, then sweep into power with Supplementary Member to keep them in power for a generation after that.

      I actually don’t think a National-NZF Govt. would be that bad. Winnie is older and wiser now and would not want to go into retirement with the legacy of having wrecked another Government. He will want to go out on a high, then National can get on with the job of governing on their own when NZF’s votes come back home when he’s gone.

        I agree Captain, as someone who has been weary of NZF in the past, upon reflection National and NZF in the 1990’s mainly fell apart when Shipley rolled Bolger.
        
        As long as National remains stable under Bill English (and the likes of Collins & WO don’t continue to undermine National/English) then as far as National is concerned then their side of the arrangement will certainly maintain stability (as a govt, with NZF).
        
        I also think with a better performing economy under National, those tensions in the 1990’s Nat/NZF coalition will be largely eliminated this time around as the money is there for both National and NZF’s policies.
        
        Can’t same the same for a Labour and Greens govt (with NZF) as Labour and the Greens will bankrupt the economy by overspending and therefore overtaxing and killing off the productive agricultural sectors. Frankly a Labour/Green (+NZF) government is still a worry, as the effects of the policies will take some time to filter through so could potentially win the next election due to more high spending promises to “assist” people in need etc.
        
        Plus look at the inexperience of the Labour MP’s especially its leadership and finance minister in waiting! Let alone the Greens who want to cut-loose and stamp their authority on the economy overnight, destroy industry and halt infrastructure developments!
        
        Let’s hope Winston weighs this all up and chooses carefully.

      The only thing I can see that will make a Lab/Green/NZ First govt unpopular is if their policies tank the economy or they start sticking their nose into peoples lives like Clarkula did last time around.
      
      Unfortunately, because National did such a good job at getting the economy moving again, it’s going to take at least a term to crash that which just leaves leftish stickybeaking and I’ve got a feeling they may have learnt from previous mistakes and not go too hard done that road again.
      
      You’ve also got to remember the medias not going to say a bad word word about Jacinda, the honeymoon will never end

        I think there is a proven track record with Winston and his cling-ons that the average voter has punished (and the party he has been with) in the past.
        
        In 1999 they punished National over Winston’s antics breaking up the coalition, and the idiot ministers (like Neil Kirton) he got into power.
        
        In 2008 they punished Labour over Winston’s lies to Parliament about his expenses.
        
        We have been lucky that since then they have been out of power, or else do you think that Anenati Loli Taylor, Brendan Horan, Andrew Williams, Richard Prosser and Tracey Martin would not have screwed up, just like Laws, Morgan, Delamere and others did in the 1990s?

    A logical option Odakyu-sen but logic is a scarce commodity in the Labour ranks. Likewise if they employ the same level of preparation for 2020 as the last 4 elections they will be lucky to get above mid 20%.
    It will be interesting to see how much total they spent on this election. They had a rush of funds when Taxinda got the nod but they are a spend-it-all mob so they might be a bit cash strapped again.
    They wasted 9 years so far as a Government in waiting with no solid plan to move across the house and we know feelz don’t count.
    Even with an increase in numbers they go forward weaker rather than stronger politically while carrying more baggage.

  One of the problems with Auckland City is they set their staff educational requirements so high. The Democracy Services Dept for instance are full of PHD’s and Masters educated staff to fill trumped up PA positions. There are so many graduates leaving university with greeny or political degrees which make them unemployable other than in local authorities. Auckland City snaps them up to fill jobs that a few years ago were filled with clerks who only needed SC.

    t is clear from a Creationist study of ecology that the organisms of the earth are designed to colonise worlds. Trees grow on barren volcanic islands within years of them emerging from the sea. Eden was the seed bed for earth and earth the seed bed for the solar system. Why stop there? If humanity was immortal in the garden and we return to being those gardeners after judgement then we would need places to plant further afield. An immortal population that can also reproduce will need a billion billion worlds. It would be unfair to any other species, sentient or otherwise if we took that inheritance from them. Restoring humanity into an immortal population that can’t reproduce, as some have argued, is not a true restoration of Eden.
    Plants are already growing on the international space station. We have extremophile species on the planet ready to go. The DNA in them could help in many cases.
    I’m one of the people that think colonising mars will be quick and easy using robotic stone masonry and plastic and the right mix of plants and plumbing. With all the space station designs available terrestrial planets will not be needed in most star systems.
    As I have pointed out to a few fellow creationists, with God as your chief engineer a space craft may be just a matter of convenience. If God wanted us to travel he would have made it possible, safe and easy. We would find a loop hole in light speed speed limit. Exotic matter would prove possible to make or we may find stable worm holes in the outer solar system. If we find these solutions before the last trump we may find a way to make the safe into the unsafe. That’s normal.

Heard the latest addition to get into parliament Think she is called “Goldritz”
. In an interview with Stuff she said, her mission in the benefit fraud support party know as the “Greens” ,was to increase the refugee intake into NZ . That type of comment,ties in with the Green Party wanting to have open door policy for refugees in NZ. Last time i read it was 5,000, for starters.
Wonder how that type of vision from Greenies, fits in with the vision of “Commie Chic” Comrades Arderns vision,to turn NZ into a destination for all sorts of undocumented refugees.
Now that Angela Merkels German Government have confessed that their open door policy for undocumented refugees was a disaster. What price NZ will be pressured by the UN hugging Lie-bour/Green cabal to fill the void. Especially if new MPs and old MPS are puppets of a corrupt and we know best what is good for NZ .
All will be a done deal if a three way coalition becomes a reality by Thursday of this week,

When are our police spokespeople going to harden up and stop being touchy-feely pussies?

Some scrote stole a car this morning in South Auckland and drove it onto a tree, killing himself, while being chased by the police. The police’s response was:

“Unfortunately the male driver has died and two female passengers have been taken to Middlemore Hospital with serious and life threatening injuries.”

Stobie said fleeing driver incidents “are incredibly tragic for everyone that is involved. The last thing our officers want when they come to work is to be involved in something like this.”

Pathetic. This Stobie character should have said “hopefully the death of this reckless criminal will serve to alert others to the stupidity of fleeing police and refusing to stop when ordered to do so.”

Personally I doubt that the officers involved are crying their poor little eyes out over this. They’re probably still up on the adrenalin.

Interesting piece on WO referencing Emma Espiner ( who I have not heard of )writing about the impact of the largest party not being in Government. Select committee appointments, research funding and all other resources in Parliament are allocated in proportion to seat numbers and national would have more of everything than anyone else. It would need labour Greens and NZ First to work together 24 hours of every day to get anything done. It is more than just votes in the house.
Winston would understand this better than anyone else having been around longer. He would know that national nz first would be easier to manage than a beast with three heads.

In fact, that possibility should scare us even more from a theological perspective because a species that has eaten from the tree of knowledge and the tree of life (using terms from Genesis) without sinning (ie God allows/orders them to eat of the fruit) would…

1. Never witness its best scientists and engineers die of natural cause.
2. Have, compared to us, perfect social cohesion.
3. Be extremely long-term thinking in its planning.

What they would accomplish in 1,000 years would eclipse what we could accomplish in 10,000. They could sure help us take care of the Muslim problem

  I have to agree Starboard. This is yet again part of the normalising of the abnormal. Like being able to tell men to get out of parenting rooms, like not being able to have an opinion without being labeled a racist.
  
  There is a move to sensitise men and that process starts by feminisation at the beginning. Try being a Dad at Playcentre with your children. I was the main caregiver but the ‘team’ had to meet to determine if a man could play that role at the centre. As long as I was accompanied it would be ok (assumption that I was not to be trusted around kids). No problem about asking me to lift the heavy stuff and play outside with the boys because it’s raining.
  
  There will come a time when I hope men grow a pair and stand up to this encroachment on our rights to be European, heterosexual and male (actually I don’t care what colour you are but I’m Euro therefore…).

The Government owns 1 in 16 houses in Auckland and we need to do a better job with them for the sake of tenants and aspiring homeowners, as well as for the neighbourhoods they live in and the wider city.”

“Change has been slow to come to Tāmaki but we are determined for the next decade in Tāmaki to look very different to the decade past,” Dr Smith says.

“TRC – which is owned jointly by the Government and Auckland Council – has been engaging with the Tāmaki community over the past few years to better understand their housing, social and employment aspirations.

“This transfer of ownership of HNZC properties and the responsibility for tenancy management to TRC will enable faster construction of warm, dry and safe houses that better meet people’s needs,” Dr Smith says.

Today’s announcement means that by 31 March 2016, HNZC tenants who live within the TRC catchment areas of Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure will have a new landlord.

There will be no immediate impact on the tenants, with existing tenancy agreements transferring to TRC with no change.

The transfer is separate to the Government’s plans to sell 1000 to 2000 of its state housing stock.

Mr English says the TRC plans that in the next 10 to 15 years, there will be about 7500 new houses built in the place of 2500 existing ones.

“Over half of the new houses will be sold to help offset construction costs, and the remainder will be retained as social housing.

Our bottom line is that there will be at least as many social houses in Tāmaki as the 2800 there now.

NZ First will not be going into a coalition with either National or Labour because NZ First will be wanting to retain their own brand and to some extent be at arms length to whomever they enter into a confidence and supply agreement with.
Labour is already in a coalition with the Greens, the MOU signed last year confirms that therefore they will be party to negotiations with NZ First as well.
The reason the negotiations are short is because the red button issues as it were are not extensive but will never the less be controversial.
There is considerable cross over between all parties on matters relating to the economy, health, education and welfare, a commonality that was expressed during the election campaigning. The Nats , Labour and NZ First are not that far apart on domestic affairs for there to be any insumountable problems.
Lastly any supposed acrimony between the parties is water undet the bridge, well behind them. This election result is a completely new beginning with the focus being on this parliamentary term.

A bit of light hearted comment on General Debate.
Yesterday was my wife’s 70th birthday. We had both the grandchildren there with their fathers. It was a wonderful day. After the official function we repaired to our home where they cleaned me out of Drambuie, Dom Benedictine, Rum and Cointreau. My wife’s friends all seem to be married to drunks.
You get a bit of that.
But it was all fun.

BUREAUCRATISM You have 2 cows. The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other and then throws the milk away.

TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income.

VENTURE CAPITALISM You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, and then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island company secretly owned by the majority shareholder, who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more.

While most of Fairfax NZ’s newspaper editorials today were about the coalition negotiations, not in Invercargill.

The once staunchly conservative pillar of the Establishment, the Southland Times, cuts loose with an attack on the United States ambassador, the United States, and telling them in effect that it thinks they know fuck all about nuclear strategy because …. because NZ sent its two frigates to protest about French nuclear testing in the Pacific.

Perhaps there’s been a fuck-up at NZ Post, and the Southland Times somehow received an editorial destined for a student rag.

  Adams is well qualified to offer advice on settling disputes. In 1996 he said said Sinn Féinn was prepared to accept the Mitchell Principles and two years later, the Good Friday agreement was signed.

You probably won’t read about this in the NZ media:

Australia’s Foreign Affairs boss has urged Australian universities to better protect themselves from the rising influence of the Chinese Communist Party.

Australia’s senior diplomat, the Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Frances Adamson, was speaking at a Chinese-funded academic institute in Adelaide.

The ABC reports:

Earlier this year a Four Corners investigation revealed the influence of the Chinese Communist Party on international students studying in Australia …

… That investigation revealed that Beijing is active across a vast array of fronts — from directing Chinese student associations, threatening Australian-based Chinese dissidents and seeking to influence academic inquiry, to co-opting community groups and controlling most Chinese-language media.

Perhaps it’s time NZ’s main political parties pulled their head out of the sand when it comes to China’s influence here.

  Not relevant here Jack5. The home grown Reds have been undermining education standards for over 20 years in NZ.
  Also interest free loans have bloated the universities coffers as they let the Reds run rampant.
