To opponents of TPP, they can say that they secured amazing concessions, without having to explain what they are because of negotiating conventions. To supporters of TPP, it’s very unfortunate but not Jacinda’s fault that it didn’t happen. Irritating, but luck has to fall to others sometimes

        Not only that happychappy but he showed the normal socialist negativity with this gem: “over the last 10 years of the last Government exports went down as a proportion of the economy. That proves free trade agreements aren’t the be-all and end-all for exports.”
        Forgetting what they said for so long so often that NZ needed to diversify and build up industry to reduce export dependency. That is what has been happening for the last 9 years while they were lounging around in opposition. Scary stuff coming from our Minister of Trade.

    Apparently the final days meeting saw Ardern preening herself for the various media photos, and no one noticed Canada wasn’t there. Kind of hard to miss you’d think.
    Then the premature announcement that we had gained some relief but the evil Nats had not given them enough time to fully display their negotiation skills.
    Well, unless there is a last minute reprieve, they will have plenty of time to own the final agreement.
    But beneath all the spin they know NZ needs this agreement, with or without the irrelevant Dispute mechanisms.

    Yep, just looked at Stuff – there are several articles all positively reporting on Jacinda and the TPPA!
    
    (Jacinda is already spinning it that they were getting what they wanted in terms if ISDS clawbacks – yeah right, as if – another Jacinda lie in the making)?
    
    Which is kind of strange because if it were say John Key or Bill English at APEC and Canada did their TPPA no show, the media certainly wouldn’t be spinning how good it was for these two – instead the media would be highlighting they achieved absolutely nothing at the end!
    
    What’s even stranger is none of those Fairfax articles are allowing comments! The MSM really don’t want Kiwi’s to rain on Jacinda’s parade by pointing out ultimately her failure there to achieve anything in terms of trade advantages for NZ Inc (which also means less revenue potential for the COL Govt coffers by way of taxes to pay for their massive spending plans)!

So we have a honeymoon / baseline poll and lots of folk are happy. From the Horizon website –

Nearly twice as many New Zealanders are feeling positive rather than negative about the effect the new Labour-led government will have on them personally.

A Horizon Research survey of 1,068 adults nationwide between October 24 and November 1, 2017, finds overall that

49% say the new government will positively affect them personally in the next three years
24% say it will affect them negatively
28% say the affect will be neither positive nor negative.
The numbers do not vary by gender.

    The media was never adoring as a whole. It was natural that there would be a lot of “excitement” articles when Jacinda Ardern took over and Labour finally had a leader with personality and energy, and especially when the parties polls started to rise, but during the election weeks there were also articles that were questioning or critical. And since the election, nothing on that score has changed. The media is not as biased as political tribalists on the right and left like to think. Much of what they perceive as bias is their own confirmation bias at work.

    Includes tenants of private landlords. Labour will drive these landlords out in their quest to try and lower house prices (which without building new houses will be like Canute trying to hold the sea back). So where will the tenants go?
    USA cities (who have more power in this regard than NZ cities) have sought to preserve rental housing stock by forbidding rental apartments being turned into condos (unit titles in our lingo).

    Just considering the other countries in the TPP and their populations – her importance and relevance might be kept in proportion if considering a few facts. eg NZ’s population compared to that of other members.
    Mexico 129 million
    Japan 128 million
    Vietnam 96 million
    NZ nearly 5 million!!
    Having been our Prime Minister for just 3 -4 weeks [and probably still suffering from the untimely death of her cat], I am sure every time she opens her mouth everyone listens intently and just soaks up every word she says – accompanied by lol!!

  I heard most of her speeches and read or saw most of her interviews. I never heard her say anything against money or mention white privilege, and the one interview where she said capitalism had failed only in some specific areas was misreported and has become a kind of urban myth on Kiwiblog. The Jacinda Ardern that exists in your mind and the one walking around in the real world don’t seem to be the same person.

The problem with that is that he didn’t attack China.
He actually attacked previous US administrations, saying that he recognised that every country, China included, had to act in its own best interests. The US had allowed a situation to develop where concessions available in the USA were not reciprocated in other countries. Trump went on to detail the new US attitude to trade – if the US permitted free entry by other nations, those nations would be expected to allow free entry to US manufacturers etc. There would be no special duties, or compulsory joint ventures, or other devices would be permitted. It would be trade from USA to X, and from nation X to the USA. Intellectual property would be protected, and subsidised production would not be eligible …and do on. The US would, he said, do this via bilateral trade agreements that set equal terms for both parties.

Certainly a hard-nosed policy, and Trump foreshadowed the protection of US interests, but not what the Herald bannered.

The user is emotionally agitated because the ideas that give them emotional comfort and security have been called into question, hence they over-compensate when stating those beliefs by rolling them in the rhetorical turd glitter of “obviously”, “absolutely”, “definitely”, and “undoubtedly”. If your precious belief is as self-evident as you think, it shouldn’t need those words to make the case. Instead, you are trying to massage your own fragile emotions…and convince the gullible by an increased level of rhetorical certitude. So they are emotive words, and as per my genius of a 5th Form English teacher, one of the signs of a poor argument is resorting to emotion.

They then resort to either “the act” with a man they know or a turkey baster. To my mind it is simply prostitution, they are being paid in sperm, not money, no love or committment involved and the child remains fatherless.   When lesbian or gay couples have babies it always means a third party is involved – the baby’s natural parent. I’m not saying that adoption is bad in general – it is preferable to abortion – but purposely organizing for a baby to be born, only to be separated from its natural parent so that you can play house with your same-sex partner isn’t right. One only has to look at Anika Moa and her first “wife” who had a baby where Anika’s brother was the sperm donor. Something very wrong with that.   New Zealand has a dire shortage of secondary school teachers with top quality mathematics and science qualifications. Many teachers with those skills, so much in demand, will have read the cited news piece in their morning’s newspaper.
  So, pray tell me, why do we make those eminently suitable possible immigrants jump through rings of burning fire to get to our country, but liquor store proprietors and fast food vendors from the sub-continent are welcomed with open arms.

    Tauhei, great point. There will be superb maths teachers in China who would love to get to New Zealand, but have nowhere near the cash to qualify as investor grade. Russia, too, has great maths folk (tens of thousands have migrated to Israel, intellectually fuelling its now booming technology industry.)
    
    The best maths lecturer I encountered at university way back in the day was a Chinese guy whose English pronunciation was so bad he had to write everything he said on the board, but he got excellent results.

Winston’s leak
”To issue proceedings,” the application says, “he [Winston Peters] requires access to the document trail developed by the conduct of the intended defendant’s aforesaid conduct”.

So Peters can claim someone has leaked his private information and then have lawyers look for any ‘evidence’, demanding that people who Peters thinks may have had access, supply ‘evidence’ ranging “from journalists’ notes, phone records, emails and other communications to ministers’ documents and phone and meeting records.”

And can those documents include all the National notes that may exist on their coalition negotiation meetings on Peters, but not with Peters? Just how extensive is Winston’s post-election fishing trip?

And who decides – the lawyers? Or can a named person, in response, say “I have checked all my texts and none mention Winston – I have nothing for you.” How does that work?

“He then fingers Joyce as having been “overheard” at a National Party conference claiming there was the “full load” story coming out about Peters.”

So what happens in regard to that? Will Joyce be asked to supply a list of all the people who may have overheard him?

And at least one report says the most likely culprit is number nine on Winston’s list.
So how can Peters’ lawyer legally conduct the fishing exercise on the first eight, and since it is likely that only one person is guilty of the so-called leak, the first eight are most likely innocent by Peters’ reckoning.
But all have been named publicly, so another question is: Has Peters smeared the reputation of those who are not guilty, if the case is resolved to show that, and can they then sue Peters for being unnecessarily and detrimentarily dragged through the media by him?

      About those remarkable connections you mention.
      
      Both WO and Soper have been consistent in their narratives by sheeting the blame directly to National (despite offering no actual proof, apart from “trust us, we know”).
      
      So is Winston’s team feeding these two? If so it would make good sense to have one respected MSM journalist (and one well known media blogger) to deal with.
      
      Or is it a case of Winston’s team feeding only one of these gentlemen (and that person feeding the other)?
      
      Who knows, but it is on the public record in various places that the WO site is paid or quid pro quo to write pieces (but I can’t imagine the same i.e. for the respected journalist being paid, as that is against journalism ethics and Soper has integrity). So at the end of the day people are being led up the garden path by one means or another.
      
      Interesting also in the Newsroom article that Winston’s team publically acknowedges Soper’s good reputation (but no mention of WO). Would Winston’s team have said that on the record if they were always “leaking” info to Soper? If not does it suggest WO is actually in the thick of it but at arms length (e.g. giving plausible deniability)?

  They are meeting the Pope in his role as a world leader. I don’t think that’s an indication of their views on Christianity, assuming they all share the same view, which seems unlikely to me. Their are Christians in both the Labour and Green parties. Not mentioning Jesus in the Parliamentary prayer is not a statement against Christianity, but a recognition of where much of the country is now.

    Even 50 years ago there was an undercurrent of violence against homosexuals in Wellington Maggy. They often bought trouble by being unnecessarily flamboyant & as they had a reputation for carrying knives, when they got bashed they really got bashed.
    
    That said the boot was often on the other foot. One night I & a couple of mates started a bit of trouble in Carmen’s “Balcony”. We were well built & fit but we hit the footpath inside a minute.

Greens announce contest to elect new co-leader in new year

Speculation has been rife, since the shock resignation of Metiria Turei, over her likely replacement. Close proximity to the election meant any moves to jostle into contention had been placed on the backburner. But among the most likely candidates was [Marama] Davidson, as well as Ministers and party veterans Julie Anne Genter and Eugenie Sage. Parliamentary Under-secretary and senior MP Jan Logie was also a likely contender.

What fun it’d be if they let everyone (not just Green Party members) vote on their replacement!

Ardern hasn’t revealed the content of the talks with Turnbull, but said the fact they are continuing proved the urgency of the situation.

New Zealand won’t pursue a deal directly with Papua New Guinea, despite Foreign Minister Winston Peters spotted holding talks with PNG’s Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.

Ardern said it was faster to organise the logistics of any deal with Australia.

“It continues to be the easiest option is to go through Australia given the screening that’s already occurred of those refugees … I’m interested in the fastest route,” she said.

Peters has made it clear New Zealand’s offer also includes refugees and asylum seekers in Australian detention centres in Nauru.

So the person most noisy about immigration of the worst kind is now apparently supporting the other person on immigration of the worst kind.

How bad is that?
