Recent stories have detailed the strong net domestic migration out of Sydney, Australia’s largest city (metropolitan area). A well covered report by economist Callam Pickering has noted strong interest by STEM workers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workers in leaving the area (see here and here). Pickering cites high housing costs as a cause, while social researcher Mark McCrindle agrees and notes that “Sydney has the longest capital city commuting times in Australia.” Both are right. Sydney has the second worst housing affordability among the 92 major metropolitan areas in nine nations covered by the 13th Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey. Only Hong Kong has housing affordability more severe. Moreover, Sydney’s traffic congestion is so bad that its average work trip commuting time is greater than that of traffic clogged Los Angeles, as well as 51 of the other 52 metropolitan areas over 1,000,000 population in the United States. … read morte via hyperlink above …

    Are you really so stupid to think that enabling a lifestyle block (that is adjacent to services) to be cut into residential sized sections would make it worth LESS?
    
    I mean…someone with a$2 mil quite decent house on 4 Ha could only get 50 sections and still have their house and pool!!

        How confusing from Labour, who are now channelling the ACT party.. Labour who set up the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area and vehemently opposed westies who wanted rights to subdivide and utilise their own properties. In fact they oppose everything from airgun games to mountain biking to anything at all. And now labour is the party to vote for if you want the urban boundary removed. People who wanted to see the Heritage Area protected and voted the COL will be concerned. A vote for Labour is like Money or the Bag. Stephen stated Grant Robinson is not acting like a finance minister who normally puts the brakes on spending and the taxpayers will have to pay for.

    Actually all previous Labour finance ministers have taken some fiscal responsibility – far more so than Grant Robertson. OK one can accuse Labour of election bribes etc, but previous Labour governments were far more fiscally constrained than the present mob.

One such was the elegant sounding Café de Paris hotel, situated opposite the Palmerston North railway station, and therefore a handy after-hours spot for passengers on the Main Trunk. Four such passengers who called in for a quick one on Christmas Eve 1953 got waylaid and were left behind when the train departed.
Abandoned in Palmerston North, they later found out that their train had plunged into the river at Tangiwai

Well – I liked that story anyway. ‘Waylaid’ ? Wasted ?

  I know a story of an old-timer from the Uni football club here in Wellington who’d finished his exams and was going home to Hamilton for Xmas in 1953.
  
  He was sidetracked by his mates in the pub at the railway station and missed the train. He caught the morning one which was diverted through Taranaki – discovered that he would have been sitting in one of the carriages that ended up in the river.

    Was talking to a bloke a few years ago (he’s since passed away) who was on the way to visit his rellies in the Coromandel for Xmas. Got off the train at Taihape for a quick beer and missed the whistle signalling its departure.
    Took him three days to hitchhike to Coromandel (knew nothing about his train going in the river) and when his rellies opened the door they thought they were looking at a ghost.

Did the other members of the NZF caucus and the board members know about Winstons pending court action whilst they were negotiating?

Would be another reason why Winston is so eager for his Waka jumping bill. They must be wondering what they’ve got themselves in for and looking back at what Winnie was pushing during the talks to sway them.

  They’ll be keeping their options open. If they have any sense then this is what they do:
  
  Wait until the waka jumping bill gets to its final vote, then threaten to jump waka right before the vote unless they get some special deal.
  
  If Labour and Winston force the waka jumping bill to a vote, then likely they’d get three or four jumpers right then – enough to bring down the government.
  
  Winston thinks waka jumping will keep his minions in place, but, more likely, it will force them to jump.

She also has no grasp of policy detail. Even at a macro level.
Chris Hipkins is introducing legislation to ensure children under 5 cannot start school.
OK, he can do that. I think most parents would rather make that decision themselves, but there you are.
So Ardern, when questioned on this, says…
“”…we’ve got the flexibility there for parents to make what they think is the best decisions in the best interest of their kids.”
No, sorry, you don’t. It’s actually the opposite.
From the same article..
“Parents keen to send their children to school when they are four years old will no longer be able to do so when the Government changes the rules next year.”

So Ardern has just told a bare-faced lie.
Why ? I presume she thinks she can say anything and the media will suck it up.
Well it does go unchallenged by ‘journalist’ Jo Moir, but judging from the comments, others are not buying it.

  The whole idea of being able to start at under five is so Parents can have some flexibility.
  If little Johnny turns five half way through a Term, he should be able to start at the beginning of the Term and not have to wait for the next one.

        Exactly too. What we encountered was children (including ours) that were 4-5 years old were being ignored at daycare as the caregivers had to devote most of their time and attention to the incoming 2 year old children.
        
        We would have liked the option to send our children to school, what 5-6 weeks before they actually turned 5, be in a place with other similarly aged children and start some real learning.
        
        By that stage most children are wanting to learn more anyway.

      Our daughter started school while she was 4.
      The school asked to assess her. She was asked to draw a picture of a person, she drew a correctly proportion figure with 4 fingers and a thumb on each hand.
      That and other clues satisfied the school she was ready to start school, and she thrived.
      But now nanny state knows best. Hold back the kids and bore them to tears, mess around the ones with birthdays near the end of the year etc.

      I watched the Bolt report last night and had a dreadful thought – without those older critical/logical thinkers – (including Leighton Smith, Mike Hosking and Larry Williams in NZ) our world will change immensely because of all the young imbeciles taking charge of various countries throughout the world.     I thought this was one idea that was supported by schools and teachers. By having groups of kids starting at the same time made it easier (and in most cases better for the kids) to go through the introductory steps for school together.

  We have near 5 yr olds being enrolled because they’ve outgrown pre-school and they are ready to move on. That’s why schools have been enrolling them.
  Similar with delaying enrollment to a 5th birthday child who has been visiting school for the past term.

  Funny Prince how they seem so disjointed. Her reaction to Chippie when he announced the $50 per week for students was even funnier. It contradicted what she had said earlier and there was a little shake of her head and a black look. Differences were once confined to the caucus room where blood was often spilled but not it is a public display as everybody goes for glory. Now they will be just bleeding support.

So what is up with the new roy morgan poll? They are combining the Labour / NZ First vote into a single number, which disguises the fact that a) NZ First is again on exactly 5% (and it seems unlikely to rise anytime soon) and b) Labour is still in the 30s and behind National.   Yes it is disturbing to have a government with under 40% support (thank you MMP), but still 39.5% (and a 3% bump) for Labour seems implausible given their clown show over the past month.
  
  I’m not surprised about National support tailing off, two disappointment factors for disaffected National voters would support that:
  a) Bill managing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory
  and
  b) “Two-time” Bill staying on illogically as leader
  
  Which shows again the paucity of choice NZ voters have, it seems that unhappy National supporters are even prepared to go to Labour rather than waste their vote on Act (who stay exactly the same at 0.5%). Then again David “Little Boy” Seymour seems to have returned to his normal troughing level of dormancy after the flurry of action for the 5 weeks leading up to the election – not even a tweet from him for a month now. Oh well, I guess we’ll hear from him again in 2 years and 11 months time as election 2020 gets going.

The latest report says Tesla is losing $12k a minute and are struggling to produce the Tesla 3 that they’ve promised to almost 400,000 people who paid a deposit. but they’ve said dont worry as they’re expecting significant cash flows soon. Also, have you seen our new Roadster which you can reserve for $365k or the Semi truck which you can reserve for $7k.

    They were also getting money from other car manufacturers as states had laws that manufacturers had to build a certain percentage of EV’s. As Ford etc. weren’t producing any, they purchased credits off Tesla. Now these companies are producing EV’s there goes that money stream.

    As you know, the initial product of Tesla Motors is a high performance electric sports car called the Tesla Roadster. Are we really in need of another high performance sports car? Will it actually make a difference to global carbon emissions?
    
    Well, the answers are no and not much. However, that misses the point, unless you understand the secret master plan alluded to above. Almost any new technology initially has high unit cost before it can be optimized and this is no less true for electric cars. The strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium, and then drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model.
    
    Without giving away too much, I can say that the second model will be a sporty four door family car at roughly half the $89k price point of the Tesla Roadster and the third model will be even more affordable. In keeping with a fast growing technology company, all free cash flow is plowed back into R&D to drive down the costs and bring the follow on products to market as fast as possible. When someone buys the Tesla Roadster sports car, they are actually helping pay for development of the low cost family car.
    
    The family car is in production the S and X are dominated the luxury large car segment .

TVNZ is shorting programs so that they can fit in more adverts. E.G. Big Bang Theory is shown in the USA on a thursday so by monday you can watch it on YouTube, advert free, before its shown in NZ on Wednesday. On Wednesday I was a a friends place and they watched the program with them. I noticed that a few seconds of the program, compared with the USA version I watched, were missing just before and sometimes after adverts. They did not change the plot but as these moments are usually funny they diminish ones enjoyment. This is so they can fit in an extra advert per program, or and extra advert break per night.

  I notice that they often also do a split screen thing in some programmes like The Chaser so that they can show the (incredibly fast) scrolling credits in one half of the screen while the programme itself finishes playing in the other half. I guess it’s a way of fulfilling their contractual obligation of showing the credits while actually not. No one could actually read them

Winnie the Poo on RNZ Morning Report, interesting feedback, & interesting listening. Clearly, he hadn’t had any discussions with officials about Zimbabwe, basically the reason for the interview. But the rest was really revealing, in that it looks like we have two govts in one. In that we have Liebore & whatever they are doing & then we have NZ Last & what they are doing. If that is the case, it is going to be easy to drive a coach & horses through the schisms that will open up.
Back to the interview.
1. Manus Island, he repeated that National put the offer on the table in 2013, & that Cindy was only confirming, but he discussed it & the issue of the $3mill offer as though he had not been part of the discussion.
Then they discussed TPPA, & when asked if NZ Last could support the deal, he claimed it was a different deal because of the housing issue, ISDS process, and that they are still working through the deal. But as we know, the deal on the table is not significantly different from that tabled by National in January.

So what we learned, Peters is a liar & holds the NZ public in contempt & we have 2 govts in one. Thanks Winnie Poo, I hope you have a dreadful retirement after the next election, for what you will put this country through until then, because of your desire for utu. WP is beneath contemptible.

  Winnie on Morning Report just would *not* answer whether he supported the repeated 150 Manus ‘refugees’ offer by Comrade Taxinda.
  
  He kept saying that National originally made the offer in 2013 and that it’s ‘too late now’ to ask whether he supported the offer.
  
  Quite interesting: he sounded bitter and angry, as if he thought the whole thing was a very bad idea but wouldn’t quite come out and say it. The old angry ‘will you let me finish?’ Winnie even raised his head, after a few moments of trying to be ‘Winston Peters Potential PM, More Statesmanlike Than Taxinda’.
  
  However, he made some good points (perhaps he reads KB): the situation is very complex, the Oz policy has indeed prevented all the boat people drownings there previously were, Oz doesn’t want people using NZ as their back door entry. He even claimed that Oz Liberals and NZ Labour accept that the policy has prevented drownings. Interesting: Taxinda hasn’t said so at all!
  
  I do think National need to make it clear that when they made the offer it wasn’t for 150 rebels who refuse to cooperate with Oz and PNG and may be raping children, but for some of the original ‘refugees’, most of whom have cooperated better, and only once properly vetted etc. Winnie is trying to make it sound like the whole situation is National’s fault.

    This issue is the sole reason for Australia delaying their decision to repatriate those refugee’s to NZ.

From Oz – flight delayed an hour as some CEO passenger refused to put his tablet on flight mode. Similar to the guy in NZ who refused to listen to the special exit row safety briefing.
QANTAS should send that CEO the bill for delay costs. Hope CEO buys executive jet so he no longer disrupts other passengers.

        On the crew telling you to put the tablet in light mode we disagree though as in the air the crew rule and while the rule is silly it is in place and we do have to obey it.

      Electrical safety at service stations was of significant concern when CNG was all the rage. Issues were identified both with installation of CNG dispensers as well as existing petrol pump installations. AFAIK there have not been any forecourt fires or explosions due to electrical faults and it is fair to say that an increased awareness of these issues probably averted problems.
      Agreed that a cell phone that is already switched on would not be a problem but operating any switch with mechanical contacts or unplugging USB etc could cause a freak mishap.

    That is not an airline decision. It depends how resistant avionics equipment is to stray cell and wifi signals. The most modern equipment would be OK but there is a large quantity of older gear in use where interference could be an issue. Murphy’s law also comes into it. It is one thing Murphy’s law causing grief to a programmer or technician and another causing an aeroplane to crash. This is why there is extra touchiness at takeoff and landing.
    Similar in hospitals – cell phones used to be banned in wards since medical equipment could be upset by the signals. Modern equipment is not affected by cell phone signals so the ban was relaxed.

  Talking of planes, heard any interesting stat the other day. 46% of pilots had admitted at some point waking up at the controls having fallen asleep. What was more surprising, 33% of them also said that their co-pilot was also asleep!
  
  Highlights one of the issues with what is required with the first stage of self drive vehicles where the driver needs to be ready to take the controls. Monitoring is very monotonous!

    Flying planes is a very simple task to automate compared to driving because the environment is far more predictable. Basically you don’t get kids running across the road in front of you, or roadworks for that matter, at 50,000 ft.
    
    That’s why we have had autopilots for decades and self driving cars are not yet mainstream.
    
    People have this idea that self driving cars will be able to fetch the kids from school or drive while you sit in the back and have breakfast. Anything like that is a long, long, way off.
    
    The Google cars in California are required to file “disengagement reports” every time the driver thought the automatic system was doing something stupid and took over controls. There are hundreds of these every year, so clearly nowhere ready for the mainstream yet.
    
    In those reports, the driver responded immediately. That means they need to be fully aware of what is going on around them. They can’t be screwing around with their tablet or taking a nap.

    Also an issue with railway locomotive drivers. NZ locos were fitted with a timer and alarm which the driver has to regularly reset. ‘Dead mans’ handles and pedals are often provided on multiple unit trains so if the driver falls asleep or is incapacitated the train will stop. Then drivers in Sydney found the pole on warning flags was just the right length to keep the pedal engaged on some trains and there was an accident. All the flag poles were shortened slightly to stop that racket.

  I don’t care about any lies discovered after the election, I’d much rather see them amend positions they took – particularly if it benefits the economy. I noted Jacinda being interviewed about dental costs last week, she pointed out the free care for those under 18 but said there was no budget for free care for those over 18. The sooner they become fully pragmatic with an eye on the economy foremost the better for everyone. I note the coalition is now softening its position on immigration – sensible enough. If they are clever they can progress with the middle ground, that’s the trick. Blatantly copy Bill and JK. Westpac dropped GDP to fall from 2.6 to 2.4 (as had other forecasters) largely on plans to reduce migration, but increasing in 2019 and 2020. Yesterday the Minister of Immigration slid sideways on that as well.

You see, Cindy is always right in Cindy’s eyes. I think we have a complete airhead as our PM Select, who thoroughly believes she is amazingly intelligent and only she knows the true way forward.

I’m beginning to question whether she actually believed she was telling the “truth” when Paddy Gower asked her whether she had ever told a political lie.

Another good little earner by some banks. Maybe even the peoples Kiwibank. A friend of mine had a large deposit with that bank .The term was for 5 months. the rate was 3.55% over that period. The amount invested was $368,000. The stated 5 months period became 150days for purposes of a payout.
The bank paid out $5368.77 before tax of 17.50% . My friend rang that bank and told them they should have paid out before tax of 17.50% an amount of $5443.33.
Bank argued that that was the right way to do it. Even though 5 months became 150 Days for my friends investment.
Sounds like a nice little earner that some banks are exploiting ,and by the sounds of it getting away with it.

  Interest is calculated daily. To get your figure of $5443.33 you would have worked out annual interest and divided it by 12 to give you a monthly amount of $1088.667. Multiplied by 5 you get $5443.33.
  
  Banks don’t work like this and nor should they. It is clearly spelt out in the disclosure statement. They had the money for 150 days. The daily interest rate is $35.79178. Multiplied by 150 comes to $5368.77.
  
  They had the money for 150 days. They paid interest on the 150 days. They paid the money and the interest back. If they had held it for 5 months then it would have come out at 152 days (guessing as I would need to know the exact dates).
  
  Usually shorter terms (less than 12 months) are done in days as months are messy with some having more days than others.

    I believe it is an American practice where years are 360 days with 12 x 30 day months. Amortisation tables for loans are frequently stated that way.
    
    It all comes down to the contract. We have been a 365 day country and for payroll 365.25 days/annum but that’s negotiable.

      Used to work in a bank and frequently had to work this out for people. Amount of money x interest rate. Divide by 365 to get a daily amount. Times by the number of days. If the term deposit has quarterly compounding stop at the compounding day, add the interest earned to the principle and work out a new daily rate. Repeat until the end of the term.
      
      There are other mathematical ways to do it that are faster, but people wouldn’t believe you unless you worked it out like this. Unless it was compounding daily in which case A = P (1 + r/n) (nt)

    It is up to the person with $368,000 cash lurking about to manage their money, or not.
    If the bank was wrong – I strongly suspect not – then take it up with the banking ombudsman.
    If facts are as Maxx says, it will go nowhere.
    
    Key elements are : Principal sum; specific term; nominal interest rate; whether compounding within the term; and instructions at end.
    
    Personally with 368K I would set up as separate $100,000 (plus 68k overlap) amounts with same term and instructions. This provides flexibility if one needs access to some of the cash for an emergency situation. Same earnings, more flexibility.

In regards to the increase of the minimum wage to $20 to help low income people, some interesting research starting to come out of Seattle’s large increase.

What they have found is that there hasn’t been large scale layoffs etc. The numbers of people employed has generally stayed the same, however rather than employing someone who is unskilled on minimum wage of $15ph, they’re employing the next tier up on $20ph who they won’t have to spend as much time training, will be able to hit the ground running as they have some experience, and have history to show work ethic. Previously paying the minimum wage employee was ok as the difference between the two was large enough to justify the additional costs.

So this policy to help low skilled, low wage people is making it harder for them to get a job and get some skills. Conversely I was talking to a mate who is a sparky and was looking to take on a couple of young guys to give them a chance and get them into an apprenticeship, now he’s going to take one experienced guy who he know’s will do the job.

      Yes that issue annoyed me, wasn’t it just pragmatic that teachers would only get two intakes of new entrants a year, and they could all go through together and the teacher would not have to have too many children at different parts of the ‘curriculum’.
      
      Most of the children have some discipline after being at day care.
      
      I would have thought that teachers would prefer it. What does a few weeks matter anyway, it should be less disruptive to a class.

Took a detour down to Kawhia the other day to have a look at a place that pops up in the news every once in a while sometimes for the wrong reasons.
Have to say I was quite surprised how native it was with numerous blobs sunning their spare tyres on the esplanade while pushing greasy shit down their gobs.
Saw some cars with a warrant and rego but probably in the minority I would say.
Lastly to the person who left their number on the wall in the public toilet saying they were horny and would like an anal interlude, well if the residents of Kawhia turn you on then enough said as it’s only one step down from here to being aroused at the WINZ office.

Meanwhile why haven’t National and ACT had the nous to oppose the latest move to make central government – that is taxpayers – the guarantors of local body borrowing. Local bodies will abuse this, that’s the real guarantee.

The government has buckled under pressure and released the total cost of its plan to boost student allowances and loans to cover living costs.

The Labour Party confirmed yesterday it would press ahead with a $50 per week boost for students from next year.

It has now released the preliminary costs taken to Cabinet when it made the decision.

The policy is estimated to cost $94 million this financial year and then roughly $200m a year from then on.

Labour had forecast before the election that the policy would cost about $273m a year.

  It shows that they’re having to underspecify costs now as the true costs are spiralling out of control. How off could the costed policy have been? We know x amount of students have an allowance and they have it for y amount of weeks. x*y*$50=$$$
  
  I’m sure it’ll come out closer to $300m than $200m. The spin will be about how successful the programme is and this is what the MSM will report.
  
  This is why is it is crucial for the Nats to push Lab to get their costings out so they can run their numbers over them, report the differences they see, and then when that’s what eventuates, it’ll further eat away at Labs stated financial capability to manage the economy.

  I don’t know about anyone else but I don’t think I have ever been influenced by country of labelling on anything.
  
  If it fits my requirements, and it’s the right price, I’ll buy it. For food, my requirements generally fall into freshness and flavour, so in that respect I generally buy local, but I don’t set out to.
  
  However, if all else is even between the two goods, including price, NZ Made/Grown would (probably) sway me.
  
  Sorry, I’m just a capitalist pig who believes free trade will make things better in the world.

Sir Michael Cullen served as Minister of Finance from 1999 to 2008 in Helen Clark’s Labour government.

The group’s final recommendations are expected to be presented to Ministers in February 2019, but any “significant changes” would not be introduced until the 2021 tax year.

A prominent right-wing preacher who appeared alongside Senate candidate Roy Moore at a campaign rally just days ago said that Moore dated teen girls because of their “purity” and because when he got back from Vietnam there weren’t any women his age left to date.
Pastor Flip Benham told a local Alabama radio show on Monday that there was nothing wrong with Moore dating teenage girls.

“Judge Roy Moore graduated from West Point and then went on into the service, served in Vietnam and then came back and was in law school. All of the ladies, or many of the ladies that he possibly could have married were not available then, they were already married, maybe, somewhere. So he looked in a different direction and always with the [permission of the] parents of younger ladies. By the way, the lady he’s married to now, Ms. Kayla, was a younger woman,” Benham said on WAPI 99.5 FM Monday evening. “He did that because there is something about a purity of a young woman, there is something that is good, that’s true, that’s straight and he looked for that.”

The persecution of Breaking the Silence’s spokesperson is further proof that the state’s investigative bodies are not only deeply politicized, they are simply uninterested in doing their job.

Between the years 2013 and 2016, Israeli anti-occupation group Yesh Din tracked the police’s response to 289 cases of “ideological crimes” against Palestinians in the West Bank. In each of those cases, the Palestinians filed a complaint with the police; some of them included photographic material, video, and testimonies provided by Israeli civilians or soldiers. And yet, only 20 cases led to indictments. In no less than 183 of them, the police were unable to locate the criminals or find evidence; more often than not, they never truly carried out a real investigation. Of the 45 cases that were opened between 2012-2014 following violence by Israelis from the radical settlement of Yitzhar against Palestinians and their property (a phenomenon known as “price tag attacks”), only one led to an indictment.

Since the beginning of the Second Intifada, B’Tselem, another Israeli anti-occupation organization, demanded the State Attorney’s Office investigate the 739 cases in which Palestinians were killed, beaten, or wounded by soldiers, or their property damaged (as opposed to Yesh Din’s cases, which deal violence by Israeli civilians against Palestinians). In a quarter of these incidents, not a single investigation was undertaken. In half of them, the cases were closed and only 25 cases ended in indictments.         1. Electric cars would be outselling real cars.
        2. They would not require tax payer subsidies to produce.
        3. There would not be punitive taxes on proper cars and energy.
        4. They would not lose money on toy cars even with all the handouts and market distortions.
        
        Anyway not a lot turns on this. Either way we need more coal fired power plants to either charge toy car batteries or to produce energy for productive pursuits.
