Twitford this morning has questioned why the National Govt did not release a transport report stating Kiwi rail was worth $1.5b to the economy. Twitford has this morning accused National of not being pro-rail and wanting people die in road accidents instead of increasing commuter rail travel. Twitford states his government will be building the commuter rail network to increase safe travel.

Judith Collins says in reply that the report was commissioned by Kiwi Rail so it is up to Kiwi Rail if they release their findings. Nothing to do with the previous government.

    Quite. The 1850s sent a telegram. They want their transport technology back.
    
    Rail is great where there are high populations (or at least high population densities) or high volumes of goods all wanting to go in the same direction at the same time.
    
    NZ has none of those. On top of that we have these pesky things called earthquakes which mean we need flexibility. Centralised rail transport does not work for us.

  “KiwiRail caved in to pressure from Simon Bridge’s office, which didn’t want the business case for a proposed Auckland rail line to be released, despite initially insisting the document legally had to be made public.
  
  Mr Bridges’ staff complained to a number of senior officials at KiwiRail saying the minister was extremely uncomfortable with the report’s proposed release. KiwiRail then decided to withhold it.

      I have agree with ztec on this one (except for his Cillins “on the way to the airport” BS).
      It seems the report was commissioned by NZTA and was done in 2016. Why Bridge’s would stop a discussion on it , I don’t know.
      I think the $1.5Bill in saving could be argued against quite strongly, from the few summary comments made in the article.

But the process seems to have gone off the rails for Taxcinda, because she was the one who told us she has no reason to lie.       Troops “inside the wire” get blown up in rocket attacks, suicide attacks, IEDs, training accidents and die in aircraft and truck crashes. Being inside the wire isn’t a guarantee of getting home intact.
      
      Heck, every year or two we even lose soldiers during training inside NZ.
      
      We might not have combat troops overseas right now, but there’s a reasonable chance that we need to send some somewhere during the next three years.
      
      But you might have missed the “something like” bit. ie. some serious issue that needs handling that is unpleasant to deal with, but falls on her as her duty to do.
      
      She’s taken on the “The Buck Stops Here” office, but she’s really only up to handling selfies with Bambi.

  Hugh, Labour’s wholesale copying of Australia’s ban on foreigners buying existing homes will actually make things worse, especially in New Zealand. Interestingly, the best refutation came from leftie economist Steve Keen, who pointed out that this policy shut off the supply of newly built homes to local buyers. Australia is more expensive than New Zealand for housing. Essentially foreigners get to buy the new nice warm houses, while the locals get trapped in the old houses. Because Australia is so warm heating isn’t a problem but in NZ this is a serious issue. Older homes tend to be less earthquake proof too. If the government is eventually going to have to spend billions bailing out leaky home buyers, this is going to cost taxpayers a fortune as new house prices will continue to converge with world big city real Estate prices while a separate New Zealand price will emerge for old damp working class houses. Under Labour New Zealanders can live in a new house, but your neighbours will be the Mongrel mob.

Sad that you think that we are as stupid as you in regard to your delay in building 100,000 cheap houses.
I am told that your Departmental Incoming Minister briefing contained all the figures you want but perhaps they are too complicated for your level of understanding and competence.
So you do what – get three well known activists spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and get the meaning less result you want.
The figures will be fraudulently presented as fact.
Despite it being only the views of the activist committee.
In the meantime you will do sweet FA in the delay in even look at getting your dream houses going.
Today the Labour Kiwibuild Deficit is 880 Houses uncompleted, even started.
It is sad that you have continued the politicisation of the Salvation Army which is now a fully blown left wing activist organisation. For tens of years my family financially gave good support to them, but have now ceased, as in many cases they do good work, but as a political left wing whingers we are no longer interested in supporting them. Sad but !

Booth and the other soldiers in “God’s Army” would wear the Army’s own uniform, for meetings and ministry work. Just been reading comments from the pest for all seasons and reasons a guy called Peters. He has commented in the last few days on Zimbabwe and Egypt.
Maybe he should start looking at the “Coalition of Chaos” in NZ ,which he has allowed to be formed.
There is a complete lack of democratic procedure being played out. by the so called Peters selected new Government.
Clowns like Twyford,and Hipkins daily run off at the mouth making statements about things such as Housing and Education policies that they seem to know very little about.
As for NZs so called democratic process and procedure of Parliamentary traditions,the whole lot is a shambles and a complete indictment of power hunger MPs quite happy to trample over the expectations of NZs as a first world country.
History will record pests like Peters as the de facto PM of NZ. What a sad Legacy for the elder statesman who never was,or never could be.

A new appeal has been lodged on behalf of convicted killer Scott Watson with fresh evidence challenging the “two hair theory” that helped seal his conviction. … The new appeal includes a report by forensic scientist Sean Doyle which calls into question whether the hairs were really Hope’s, and criticises the way the evidence was handled. Watson’s father, Chris Watson, said he and his son had read the forensic report and fully backed the appeal.

I wonder if he’s taken on this case. After all, he’s got a bit of time on his hands while he waits for the Court of Appeal’s Lundy decision…

      There is good faith involved in these message boards. I have offered, via David Farrar, to help anyone with the case facts in Lundy. One of the current facts is that his conviction is in the process of being overturned. The interesting question is how compensation will be dealt with. Helen Clarke was active in securing the release of the late Rex Haig because the facts clearly showed he was innocent. As Ardern’s mentor, it is not surprising what is proceeding now in the justice arena. However, Phil Goff and Judith Colllins turned on Peter Ellis after being sworn as justice ministers.
      I see no obvious reason yet to trust Andrew Little.

  I find the Scott Watson case interesting. It seems that Andrew Little is being asked to consider whether a blanket removed from Watson’s boat would yield 390 hairs to 7.5 centimeters initially, and then at a time after Olivia’s reference hairs arrived at the ESR laboratory yield two blonde hairs of 15 and 25 centimeters. Can anyone clarify if these facts are in dispute?
  Judith Collins was advised by Kristy MacDonald that the two hairs proved Olivia was on his boat, so he killed them. Collins accordingly dismissed his RPOM in a godlike manner befitting her self proclaimed status. Does Judith Collins consider the act of removing 390 hairs with tweezers is a thorough search, or a once over lightly? What does the reasonable man/woman believe?
  In my view the hairs are a red herring, and prove that the ESR laboratory is a chaotic mess.
  It is a grave concern that forensic standards in New Zealand are under the international spotlight and no one in authority is noticing.

A YouTube item, “Leaked Audio from Pike River”, easy enough to find when that phrase was entered in the YouTube Search Panel, now seems to be missing.

It was a recording of several communications from inside the mine on the morning of the initial tragedy, as a number of incidents occurred – increased gas release but no means to measure it, gas-activated detectors shutting machinery down, and equipment breakdowns other than that.

Can any knowledgable person explain, apart from the motivation of a $13,000 bonus, why 31 men continued to work in the mine that day, with the incidents occurring as recorded, and as similar events had been happening for at least two weeks?

“[The explosion] was totally preventable, and totally avoidable. It was a gross act of corporate negligence. And they still don’t have all the answers about what really happened, I’m privileged to have the job of doing the best I can to fulfil that promise.”
– Andrew Little, the Minister Responsible for Pike River Re-entry, in handing the keys to the mine access road to the Pike River families.

Re-entry, if it happens, may reveal a cause of the disaster, but it will remarkable if such evidence is found in the drift.

However, if “… it was a gross act of corporate negligence”, the men knew but continued to work in that environment. They “had known of serious safety breaches underground before the disaster”.

So another matter, touched on by Little’s “totally avoidable”, will remain as unexplained as it has been now for seven years –
Why were 31 men still in the mine when the disaster occurred?

  Little was the involved unions’s leader who on numerous occasions stated the mine was safe. I’m sure that if there was any risk he would have pulled the workers out of the mine long before the day concerned. Andrew would not have let the miners greed for money overide safety. Anyway he is now in charge of the process so I’m sure he will conduct the $23+ million investigation to get the result the unions are looking for.

    Let’s not forget that the mine shaft was dug ‘uphill’ (the only such mine in the world) because the Greenies wouldn’t allow a road to go further into their precious bush and the whole thing was signed off by the Clark Government despite it being well known that methane flows uphill.
    It was a time bomb from day one.

        DOL [2010] took no further action! remember mining never took place under the previous government, just excavations through ordinary rock, the coal seam being about 7m thick under a 1100m mountain range

      The ‘drift’ was allways going to be uphill, as the coal seam was higher than the surrounding land under the Paparoa Ranges.
      
      Its a physical impossibility to go ‘down to the coal’ as its 150m below the peaks at 1100m. The road finished at around 350m

  After the first explosion the EPMU strongly defended the management of PRC.
  
  EPMU National secretary Andrew Little (now a Labour MP) told the New Zealand Herald on November 22 2010 that there was “nothing unusual about Pike River or this mine that we’ve been particularly concerned about”.
  
  He then appeared on TVNZ’s Close Up to again defend PRC management.
  
  He told Close Up that underground mining was inherently unsafe and the risk of gas explosions, particularly on the West Coast, was high.
  
  While the industry was aware of the risks and took the necessary precautions, unfortunately these kinds of incidents still happened, he argued.
  
  On November 26, 2010 the Dominion Post ran an article that denounced ‘wild’ rumours that the mine was not safe. It declared that “Any suggestion of obvious or known safety lapses does not find traction with unionised staff or union leader Andrew Little.”
  
  Andrew Little’s conciliatory views toward PRC management were echoed by Labour MP Damien O’Connor. He suggested that no one was responsible for the accident and that the disaster was “just one of these things that the West Coast unfortunately has had to get used to over the years”.
  
  Little and O’Connor’s views would of found favour with the Minister for Energy and Resources, Gerry Brownlee. He insisted that PRC had “an absolute focus on health and safety”.
  
  So here we had the Government, the Labour Party and the EPMU all lining up to defend the management of PRC.

  They were all trained. Most of them had a decade or more experience. They all saw, and understood, the indicators of problems. They had more information on the state of the mine, and a better understanding of the mine itself.
  
  Yet they chose to make an informed risk that didn’t work out for them.
  
  Yes it was avoidable. All it needed were those miners to be a little less “she’ll be right”.

    under the Health and safety Act the workers had an obligation not to go down an unsafe mine. Many left the mine and talked about it being unsafe. Those that ignored the warning signs are now dead. Except a few above ground.

Civil defence’s over-ride of the ‘Emergency notification’ button on cellphones is just the thin edge of the wedge from our socialist civil servants to invade our privacy and fall in line with their left wing dogma. There is no doubt that the front line of civil defence do a great job however the panjandrum’s on their $150,000 salaries are another story. The Telco’s buckled to their demands and allowed them to override a specific function on our phones. If this had happened in the USA it would have been quickly reversed in the courts. In NZ however our judges are just as left wing and would see it as for the “better good “.

        Yes, there are other people, and this is about spending public money. The only time such warning systems could work are Tsunami or Floods. To date warnings (or the lack of) have not been very accurate eg last year the earthquake off East Cape caused a tsunami warning, that closed down Auckland rail & ferry services. When I pointed out the stupidity of this, I was told Wellington had told them so. So, I got a map & asked how a tsunami could possibly hit Auckland from an earthquake with an epicentre 15km from East Cape. It is impossible.
        My point is, when we have that type of experience, is something like this network going to be any better managed, in the hands of the same people?

        Sound like it’s a lose-lose for civil defense. Without such a system – if there was a huge flood or tsunami that killed thousands (I think it was 15,000+ in Japan), people would complain about why more use hadn’t been made of such technology. With such a system – people complain about its expense and “inconvenience”. And I’d wager a quick $10 that some of those would be the same people.

        Tsunami can hit right around the coast .
        Just like any wave they can bend around headlands and all around islands .
        
        Auckland has these strange features called Maars
        Orakei and Panmure Basins, Lake Pupuke, Crater Hill, Pūkaki lagoon are all maars
        Explosive Craters caused by hot magma making contact with water.
        I for one would want to know if they detected such activity. There may not be much warning before such an event. Getting fried in Pyroclastic flow would not be a good way to go.

  Your original point seems lost in the noise but it’s valid. Why did the govt override the opt-out settings, and is that even legal? Other countries with this alert system respect the users phone settings.
  It’s my phone, I paid for it and I pay to keep it connected to the network. I can think of a raft of reasons why I might choose, at times, not to have my phone randomly alerting me outside my control.
  Disabling the opt-out settings on OUR phones is a power trip and is intended to send a message about control, nothing more.

Having been a long-time reader, and given the recent behaviour of the of the current Government, I have finally joined your ranks to participate in objective comment.
It is clear the recent Caucus Strategy meeting during Parliamentary recess, at tax payers expense, was to formulate a direction on how to deal with an effective opposition. This being manifested in the claims the Leader of the Opposition is absent and being replaced, a new Housing Review Panel and hypocrisy over the number of questions being asked of the Government – Let alone the ‘objective’ Tax Review Panel.
Clearly the Government is attempting to change the narrative from an examination of them and their lack of clarity on direction and policy, ably assisted by a MSM that was active in their road to Government; to creating disharmony within the opposition.
National need to stay the course as I don’t believe the Government has the experience and/or the intellect to deal with the issues this new Government have created, or do they know how to deal with the missing Winston Peters.

        That would be proper to consider. There has to be some control on the minimum quality and ability we can expect in an incoming government. This one was imposed not elected.
        
        They were known amateurs and are now proving it and have already damaged our relations with Australia. Letting them loose on the economy is too much of a risk. They appear also to be abandoning the mandate they acquired for their own muddling ideological directions.
        
        Are the unions complicit in this? Their ability to have a controlling say in who is to be the leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party raises constitutional issues. The unions are not in Parliament and not voted for. This is a way to a potential back door takeover of Parliament.

  First, they are not refugees — that’s just Jacinda’s term of convenience. Even if they were once refugees, they have been given places in PNG which nullifies their refugee status from anywhere else.
  
  Also, not sure if NZ has caught up with this (doesn’t suit the NZ media agenda to proclaim it), but there are no longer any cue-jumpers in the mothballed detention facility. All have been re-housed within PNG.

Further to Sooty’s note about ztev, it seems Nick Smith has upset the sensitive soles of the CoL & the assorted commentators supporting the CoL.
As reported in the Herald last night, Smith’s November newsletter to constituents makes the bold assertion that National won the election, but lost the negotiations. His reasoning, National got more votes than Labour/NZF, got more votes than the previous 3 elections & got a bigger share of the vote than Clark’s Labour govt. (I have paraphrased the article). But this seems to have got the sensitive soles of the CoL upset, their only response being that National with 44.4% got a smaller share of the vote than in any of the elections 2008 to 2014.

To the apologists for the CoL & in agreement with those that say that Taxcinda was selected by Winnie the Poo, all I will add is:
The CoL is a result of Peter’s disingenuous negotiations, Cindy was selected as PM & not elected. Live with the facts Liebore luvvies.

  The others ganged up and made up the numbers.

Barry Soper has done well today, for a change. Nothing like pointing out the hypocrisy of the current government.

I don’t rate him at all.

3. “Jacinda Ardern … has to share the responsibility for .. holding a Labour Party caucus meeting at a venue away from Parliament but in Wellington last Friday.
Parliament was in recess last week which means politicians had to fly to the capital from all over the country to meet for around three hours, which would have cost a heap. …why they couldn’t have held their strategic planning meeting this coming Friday when they’d be in town anyway, is beyond comprehension.”

They have no idea what they’re doing, never intended to do anything they campaigned on, and are running around like headless chickens pretending they’re achieving something. But spin, spin, spin – backed up by their campaigning social media trolls.

FFS we have protests, petitions all over one referring decision in one league game which a group of one eyed fans don’t like.

Maybe judicial reviews in court of all games and imprisonment for any officials found to be wrong.
FWIW I actually think the referee was correct anyway as the English guys hand definitely contacted the ball but only as part of the tackle but for it to be ruled a “strip” it has to be deliberate which it obviously was not so the only problem here is ignorant biased fans.

There needs to be a museum celebrating the racial hygiene that the British created in their colonies. Their anti-miscegenation laws were models of racial science. In Fiji and in Rhodesia for example natives were forbidden to live with let alone copulate with whites. This helped keeped British blood pure and was an inspiration for other European countries experimenting with racial science. I hope this aspect of the empire is remembered in any new museum.

In Vietnam, when JFK entered office the brutality of the Diem regime that the US had imposed had finally elicited domestic resistance that it could not control. Kennedy was therefore confronted by what he called an “assault from the inside,” “internal aggression” in the interesting phrase favored by his UN Ambassador Adlai Stevenson.

Kennedy therefore at once escalated the US intervention to outright aggression, ordering the US Air Force to bomb South Vietnam (under South Vietnamese markings, which deceived no one), authorizing napalm and chemical warfare to destroy crops and livestock, and launching programs to drive peasants into virtual concentration camps to “protect them” from the guerrillas whom Washington knew they were mostly supporting.

By 1963, reports from the ground seemed to indicate that Kennedy’s war was succeeding, but a serious problem arose. In August, the administration learned that the Diem government was seeking negotiations with the North to end the conflict.

    But most of our meat in NZ is halal certified. Years ago that didn’t bother me. The more I’ve learned about islam, the more it does bother me: it’s a form of kuffar submission. I’d like the choice of buying (no more expensive) non-halal meat.

      Halal certification has crept in under the door because it isn’t worth the cost of separating products into halal & non halal. If you want to be on the safe side stick to bacon or pork chops.
      
      But it isn’t only meat. A few varieties of biscuits are certified pro head banger & there are sure to be other products.
