    The intellectual response, to distinguish between Moslems and terrorists (most victims of terrorist acts are Moslems), so as to recognise common cause against terrorists.
    
    An attempt not to be tribal and divide against Moslems. The terrorists of course have other ideas. They want to either cower (subjugate Moslem populations or intimidate the west into appeasement), or realise such a division. Division they would attempt to exploit to radicalise more Moslems to their cause.

  Unlike people who say “God is Great”, people who shout “Allahu Akbar” DO NOT HAVE PEACEFUL INTENTIONS. It is a terrorist battle cry, meant to “strike fear into the hearts of non-believers”.

      They are both constructs, and they are both formed from the same Middle Eastern mythic matrix. There are differences between how Judaism, Christianity and Islam view this god, but also similarities.

        Yep. The word “God” (or “gods”) in Hebrew is elohim. In the related Semitic Arabic is is Allah. You can see and hear the similarity. The original (Jewish) Christians including Jesus spoke another related Semitic language, Aramaic, but the word is similar – hence Jesus’ words on the cross, quoting Pslam 22:1, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?/My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
        
        The New Testament was written in Greek, so it used the standard word for God/gods in that language, ho Theos (the God). From whence we get the word theology. And as Christianity is a religion of many languages, it adapts and uses the local ethnic equivalent when translating the New Testament. Hence “Deus” in Latin, “Atua” in Maori and Polynesian languages…
        
        However, the name for God is different for Muslims and Jews. For Muslims it is also…Allah. For Jews it is written, as per the Old Testament/Tanakh as YHWH (Semitic languages were originally written without vowels), and pious Jews never pronounce it. Instead, they substitute alternatives such as Ha Shem (the name), or Adonai (Lord). For the non-pious we usually say “Yahweh”…from whence the awful English ersatz “Jehovah” derives. For that reason instead of using Yahweh, the New Testament inserts the Greek word Kurios/Lord – which was also the practice adopted by a Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament from approximately 200BC, the Septuagint/LXX.
        
        However, and as per treadingthemill, just because there are similarities, does not make then identical.
        
        Jews believe God is a singular monad, who can and will only reveal himself through prophets – and a future Messiah – who are descended from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. hence, Islam must be false…as Muhammad, while purportedly descended from Abraham, is via Ishmael, not Isaac. Therefore he is a Gentile.
        
        Similarly Jesus, while a Jew, is rejected – and was crucified – because he claimed to be…Yahweh Elohim. For them the Christian doctrine of the trinity is heretical tritheism.
        
        Christians reject modern Judaism (but not the Old Testament), as they believe that while there is only one God, he is revealed in three persons – the trinity – of “the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ/the Messiah) and the Holy Spirit”. Hence for Christians that is God’s name that is pronounced at the baptism. Also, as Christ is the greatest revelation of God’s will and being that will ever be given…Muhammed who came some 600 years later is rejected.
        
        Muslims, like Jews believe God is a monad, not triune. However, as both Jews and Christians reject Muhammed as a prophet, and they think Christians are tritheists, therefore Muslims reject Judaism and Christianity. Muslims acknowledge Adam, Enoch, Noah, Moses, David and Jesus as prophets and in theory at least, they affirm both the Torah and Psalms of the Old Testament as Scriptural, and the new Testament Gospels as authoritative. However, as the content of those Scriptures are at odds with the supposed revelations taht came through Muhammed…the Muslim explanation is that the Jews and Christians have changed them after Muhmammed. Therefore, in practice Muslims seldom refer to them other than to expose the supposed falsehoods of Judaism or Christianity…or where it supports Muslim doctrine, as an apologetic exercise.

        It seems that the original post is not being followed. The claim is, and it’s one I’ve also posted on, is that the claimed translation of Allahu Akbar is not “God is Great” as it would be understood in English. Rather it is a specific slogan proclaiming the superior greatness of “Allah” over the “God(s)” of others. That interpretation derives from the specific superlative cases used in the expression. More literally the translation is “God is the greatest” with the implied possessive “My God is greatest”.
        
        To call it a simple affirmation of the greatness of “God” is to misinterpret the intention of the call. It is specifically meant as a boast or threat, hence its use as it is used.

        No, not necessarily. Because Allah in Arabic doubles as both a title/description for deity in general, and also as the name of the specific deity who supposedly manifested himself to Muhammed
        
        …it is, or at least it could well be both/and. So in the first instance it is a false dichotomy to make the claim you/the writer of the Jerusalem Post article has. Which is why, instead, he, rightly, avoids discussing the ranges of meaning of “Allah” because as it would not suit his argument, and instead concentrates on the verb akbar to sell the idea:
        
        Akbar is a elative form of the root k-b-r. Kbr means big or great…
        
        Bottom line: All words and phrases in all languages- including Allah Akbar – have a range of potential meanings, and it is the specific context in which they are used that narrows and then nails down the specific meaning.
        
        In the sense that “Allah Akbar” on the lips of a suicide bomber or similar terrorist or jihadist is an assertion of Allah’s superiority over the beliefs of the infidels and idolaters against whom war is being waged…yeah, sure. Often/maybe always it can mean that.
        
        But no, it may be very possible that “Allah akbar” can appear on the lips of the peaceful pious Muslim worshipper in other contexts, like say during haj. And if the retort is…”there is no such thing as peaceful Isalm as it is automatically violen/militantt”, well, that is irrelevant to the intended meaning of the speaker.
        
        Plus, um, an equivalent is the Christian confession “Jesus Christ is Lord”, and also the ultimate confession of Judaism, the Shema: “Hear, O Israel, the LORD (Yahweh) our God, the LORD (Yahweh) is one”. In the first instance they affirm a standard bedrock position of piety. But, yes, by implication, and in the right context there is is also the understanding – any other “Lords” (a title used by Caesar, a supposed and self-proclaimed god at the time of the New Testament) are to be
        
        …nor any other God/gods, be they Ba’al, Molech, Chemosh as when the Shema was placed on the lips of Moses in the Torah.

        Also, I seem to recall the Turkish soldiers shouted “Allah Akbar” when charging the Anzacs. Religious meaning asserting Islam over Christianity? For some, maybe and the Turkd tried – unsuccessfully in many cases – to portray the Great War as a jihad rather than a clash of nations/empires. After all, some of their Muslim Arab subjects revolted against them, and the Ottomans were allied with the Christian Empires/nations of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria!
        
        But in many cases Allah Akbar” was likely a reflexive learned thing that was as traditional as “For God, England and St George”/Deutscland uber alles/Vive la France!” Sure you can mean it…or you are just shouting it because you need to shout something when charging a machine gun and trench full of rifles! 😉
        
        Plus, um, ok, so akbar is elative in form, similar to the superlative in English…”greatest”. Um, but so what? That is a standard claim for each of the three great monotheistic religions to make of their deity…indeed it is a rhetorical device because when you boil it down, none of them – Judaism, Christianty and Islam – believe any true deity exists…beyond their own as they conceive him.       They each claim to derive from revealed knowledge of the one God.
      
      Call them stage one (belief in the first revelation), two (belief in the first and second revelation) and three (belief in the first, some of the second and third).

  Mallard has coveted that role for many years and without doubt has one of the best understandings of parliamentary procedures of anyone in the House. How he applies that knowledge is what matters most. Will he be biassed and contemptuous as was the vile Margaret Wilson or will he be quite open and balanced as was Lockwood Smith? I’m prepared to give Trev a three month trial on the basis of his proven knowledge and on the basis that this will in all likelihood be his final term and it’s an opportunity for him to leave Parliament having earned the respect of both sides of the House. Mallard has his faults but he is a traditionalist when it comes to Parliamentary procedures.

        Its interesting that only now the dam has burst. Every day we read about more coming forward. I think some will inevitably be those trying to seek monetary gain (is patting someone’s bottom or kissing them really serious sexual assault?) but the shear numbers show there really is a major problem.

    You can’t see the difference between the prevailing moral belief system in Christianity, which makes hypocrites, “hypocrites”; and the prevailing moral belief system among Progressives, which makes “free love” and destruction of moral standards, “the” standard? Which makes people like Weinstein (and Hefner, and hook-up quickie “daters” everywhere) bold warriors for the cause?
    
    Daniel Greenfield refers to getting “…a pass for being too transgressive to be bound by the conventions of bourgeois morality…” and he fails to point out that in progressive circles, surely the women are assumed to hold this position too? Otherwise what are they doing in Showbiz at all? If they are known to hold ideals of honour and purity, that makes them “conservatives”, and no conservatives are allowed to be hired in Hollywood and Big Entertainment.

Labour acting exactly as National should have 9 years ago. Everything assumed to be rhetorical isn’t, they’re wiping everything they said they would and then some. Who cares about the honeymoon, if in 100 days they make big changes, the electorate gets another 900 to forget about it. JK’s honeymoon lasted his entire time in parliament and he did nothing with it. No big calls, no substantiative changes, just steady as she goes leadership. Sure, the economy is great but now we have Labour at the tiller ready to wipe that out. Then what? National comes in, mops it up again and then says to Labour “have another go at socialism, we didn’t touch anything, just fixed that money problem you were having”…

My prediction: Now Ardern is in power, she’ll be able to spin her way through any short term issues, look Prime Ministerial enough and wipe National out in the second term which will look a lot like the 9 years of National coming back for a second dip. Winston will be gone, not sure on the Greens, if they keep their parasitical nature, they might live on as the Hard-left, enviro, communist vote for Labour. It’s not what I want but I’m not convinced the predicted apocalypse of the hydra will ever appear and the longer Ardern is in power the more people will just accept her as electable.

    You forget (or ignore) the fact that National’s first priority was to get the economy back into surplus in the face of what they were facing: the GFC, and multiple natural and industrial disasters. And 10 years of future deficits thanks to Cullen.
    
    They did that (got us into a financial position the envy of the Western world), and when we were in a position for everyone to take the benefits, our underclass aided and abetted by our socialist media, went for the biggest bribes.

  I agree with that. As the poet Yeats once said – ” The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.”
  
  Labour just get on and go full bore and implement all their policies straight away. National tinker with the marginal tax rate, put in a few Charter schools and manage the economy reasonably well.
  
  But all the time the new labour entitlements are left untouched – “working for families is still there”. The most egregious was the anti-smacking legislation which 87% of New Zealanders opposed but National left untouched. During John Key’s term gay marriage was brought in, the whole transsexual revolution was untouched by the government and it goes on and on.
  
  Unfortunately National just don’t care about these incredibly bad social changes that the left bring in. Or if they do care they lack the courage to fight. For national as long as they can manage the economy reasonably well they think they have done a good job.
  
  But here is the thing. There is not enough dollars anywhere for the welfare state to compensate for the destruction of the family and the social anarchy which will follow.
  
  National needs to get back to its core principles, like defending our New Zealand way of life and defending the family. But to do that they need a leader of courage and conviction.

    I agree with much of what you wrote, but gay marriage is no big destroyer. I know several wonderful, loyal gay couples and am glad they can be together.
    
    I think National only managed to stay in for 9 years and do well in the last election *because* they have been steady and moderate. I would never vote for a party that tried to make gay marriage illegal again.

      Gay marriage was not actually supported by the majority of New Zealanders. Kevin Hague made that clear in a debate on the subject at the Masterton town Hall when he was asked about why should we not have a referendum on the subject and he answered “minorities do not do well in referendums”.
      
      Gay marriage had nothing to actually do with enhancing marriage, most liberal leftists don’t actually believe in marriage. It had everything to do with enhancing gay rights.
      
      The difficulty is that all these social changes undermine the best way to raise children which is Mum and dad in a permanent committed relationship, i.e. marriage, looking after their children. We have lost that and we pay the price with thousands of children being brought up in unstable family units, often without the guidance of their biological father.
      
      We pay the price with millions of dollars on welfare supporting unstable family units. The national government if they had spent any time promoting actual marriage might have done some good. But they didn’t want to promote actual marriage, that would be too controversial to the left. So they went along with the left and bought in the travesty that is gay marriage. They didn’t believe in gay marriage but they just went along with it.
      
      That’s what national and the centre-right appear to do. They just go along with the leftist agenda.

        I totally agree that only stable couples should even think about having children. I don’t agree that allowing gay marriage is much of an issue in that regard.
        
        Here’s what I want to see: no more single parent benefits for new mothers after 9 months. Meaning that if you’re a woman pregnant right now you will have help, but don’t even dream of getting pregnant now, unless you’re in a proper relationship, can support yourself or can get help from family/friends or other help.

        I don’t think churches are forced to do gay marriage. It’s just a state arrangement, ensuring legal rights regarding inheritance etc.
        
        What gay friends have done for me: been good, loyal friends and helped me in many ways.
        
        Would you like these now middle aged/elderly men living quietly in their relationships, who are good citizens and good neighbors, to be alone and miserable? Or to ruin a woman’s life by trying to be in a hetero relationship?

        Things change. Just because something has always been done a certain way does not mean it should continue to be done that way. Otherwise, by your definition, slavery would be just simply because it was always practiced. And marriage has never been static in the way you claim. Polygamy for example, and not that long ago in the Western world marriages had nothing much to do with love, they were arranged by the families for economic reasons. It was also not uncommon for girls to be married at 13, 14 or 15. And even if there was no marriage rite, many cultures in the past were tolerant of gay relationships.
        
        Don’t you see it changes everything?
        
        I don’t see that it changes things as much as you do, but even if it did, I would not care. Because I do believe that change is a matter of justice. And justice is not determined by what has always been done, otherwise slavery would be just for that reason. I can see that from a Christian fundamentalist pov this is a big deal, but I’m not concerned with what your god says.

I think the opposition to homosexual people living in a relationship is effectively close to zero; except maybe the most fundamental of Christians or any devout Islamic person. Not sure about other religions.
        
        So why chose the label marriage except to cause as much offence as possible ? And believe me, don’t even think of trying to claim you are married as a same sex couple if you ever visit anywhere in the Middle East except in Israel. You will not have a pleasant experience.

It just means you can’t force everyone else to agree with you.
        
        What I don’t care about is your god or your religious beliefs. Why should I, or anyone else, be forced by the state to agree with them? Because that is the underlying element in your position. You want to force your religion upon me and the rest of the country. We don’t do that in New Zealand, that’s what Muslim countries do.         Well that’s the whole point, isn’t it? These new laws are based around “the redefinition of marriage”. That is even what some of the bills pushing for gay marriage were named. So how can you “redefine” something and still have it be the same thing? Short answer: you can’t. Redefining marriage to include same-sex couples changes it from marriage into something else, in the same way that allowing girls to join the Boy Scouts means it is not the Boy Scouts any more.
        
        Marriage was always based upon the organic reality of the relationship between a man and a woman. The Govt didn’t invent it; it only recognizes something that has always existed; therefore, they can’t redefine it, either.
        
        Even Hillary Clinton acknowledged this reality of marriage before she “evolved” (read: changed her viewpoint for political expediency).

    Sure, but as others have argued with you Phil, you can’t deny the political success of Key. Not just three terms but with an increasing share of the vote, which I’ve never heard of for a three-term government.
    
    Key simply cashed in on what the majority of New Zealanders think/feel/believe.
    
    We’re not Americans; our standard response to any problem is, What’s the government going to do about it?, reinforced by 100+ years of thinking like that (none more so than “right-wingers”), plus the sense of our ourselves as virtuous about nature and the environment (hence the success of shaming in that area), plus our decades-long history of low wages and low productivity leading to so many people being dependent on the state – including no small proportion of the righteous middle-class.
    
    Aside from the systems breaking down, as they came close to doing under Muldoon, and/or vast societal pressures – which we may be seeing via the ongoing rush of technology atomising our jobs, media, business (and government control??) – we’re not going to see this change.
    
    Sorry to say it, but you’re pushing shit uphill. Or to put it more elegantly:

        Nearly winning is not winning. All Brash did was regain National voters. He failed to convince enough centrist swing voters to get on board. So he lost.         As long as New Zealanders get much of their stuff for “free” (especially the hidden stuff) and think the cost can be dumped on to someone else, all the logic, rationality, and philosophy in the world is not going to change them. For all the talk about “poor” people voting for Key I’ve been amused at the number of Lefties who were just giddy over Me Too, even as she’s screwed the system over the years to build a position of income and wealth that likely exceeds theirs, like any good little Dacha owner.
        
        Just look at this debate as an example: few upticks or downticks, and tribal National voters like Flipper jeering the whole thing as “boring”.

  The Key government was expert at incrementalism the best thing you could say about it, was nobody noticed any changes as they happened so slowly. Unfortunately Chinese capital is hard to hide as is mass immigration and a massively distorted housing market, and no roads or trains. But this probably isn’t why they Nats were turfed out. In my opinion the Nats had to go because they don’t share well. This will have to change if they are to return to government. They will have to court other parties and make policy compromises, they will never get 51% of the party vote. If they made some acknowledgement that they are responsible for the housing crisis they might earn some trust back. If they did this I could easily see some other smaller parties look to them for a deal at the next election, but if they don’t they could get 49% of the party vote and they will still be dead in the water. MMP means you HAVE to compromise.

Am delighted to understand, from the Washington Post subsidiary, the Auckland Herald that after 5 days is power that the Coalition has solved the Auckland House problem.
Look forward to this being the case in the next two days for the rest of the Country.
Next will be the national fuel “Levy” hikes . Understand now it is at least 10c plus GST in Auckland. Goff acknowledged this two days ago.

The Three Strikes and You’re Out Law will be history by June next year. According to the bleeding hearts it is too similar to the US model.

My understanding is that the US consider any criminal act on the 3rd strike a felony and then lock you up for life. Up until then they are lesser charges (in the main – misdemeanour). I read about one individual who stole food from a child and in doing so, under their law, carried out a felony…life in prison.

The bleeding hearts in NZ forget that the three strikes law targets the high end of crime – murder, rape, aggravated robbery. So these folk are allowed to hack and maim their way across the country three times before they are restrained indefinitely.

One day one of these characters will visit their charms upon a bleeding heart and only then will they ‘get it’.

    Well, I can only speak for myself, not Kimbo or the others, but I see no evidence of any support for hard right economic policies in New Zealand. ACT is on less than one percent for that reason, and even in their heyday they never managed much more than New Zealand First. And I see even less evidence for any kind of Christian conservative policies. If you wish to govern the country, it does not make any sense to adopt policies that will make that goal unlikely or impossible. If National were to adopt the kinds of policies you and some others want the result would likely be New Zealand First replacing National as the main alternative for non-Labour voters.
    
    So I think Phil that your real problem is not the National party, but the New Zealand people. Bashing National for understanding reality is to miss the point. That point is, where is the electoral support for your policies? It’s not there. So unless you have a strategy for converting well over 2 million people or so to your political views, National, and the New Zealand public, are going to leave you perpetually disappointed. A strategy for converting those millions is your only path forward. And as far as I can tell, neither you nor your fellow travelers have one.

Probably only 1% of French under Vichy were really in The Resistance, too. But with actual enemy uniforms and jackboots imposing their program, versus your “own” team doing it for them and presenting an appearance of “honour” because the other side is really the wave of the future and who are we to stand in its way….? With actual enemy uniforms and jackboots, people are that much clearer and ready to rebel.

        Time. People change, their views change, younger generations come up with different views. Time is your enemy.

        You assume too much power and influence from political leaders. We are a democracy. Leaders don’t lead in the way that you’re assuming, they are led by the people. Leaders change or moderate their policies based on where most people in the electorate are in their views and opinions. A leader who led in the way you’re suggesting would be turfed out after one term, and whatever policies they implemented would be reversed.
        
        We even have our Petain – Jim Bolger.
        
        Bolger simply responded to the electoral backlash against Ruthenomics. Had he not done so Labour would have won the next election, likely in a landslide, and reversed everything anyway. And while National limped on in coalition with New Zealand First, the backlash did in the end destroy them and gave Labour nine years under Helen Clark. So we are back to your basic problem. The majority of voters don’t support your policies, and no leader, no matter how strong, is going to change that. Ever. New Zealand is not and never will be the USA. There is simply no appetite for the policies you favour. Unless over 2 million people in New Zealand become fundamentalist Christians or libertarians in the next few decades, you’re tilting at windmills.

        In 2005 he won back the usually rock solid support of the largely moderate/pragmatic right National voters which is about 35-40%…who in the unusual situation of the 2002 election, when it was clear Clark was going to win, imploded and defected to the likes of United Future and NZ First for the tactical purpose of putting a hand-break on her and a potential coalition with the Greens.
        
        You also overlook that in heading right in 2004-05, Brash in effect neutered National’s only right wing coalition partner, ACT. Before the 2005 election they had 9 seats, after Brash moved into their space they had only 2 – and have been on Epsom electorate life-support ever since.
        
        Bottomline – there is not a large hard right base on which to draw to win elections in NZ. Blame the politicians who fail to try to sell that message all you want. The real issue is…most voters reject it. And have in NZ ever since…the election of the Liberals in 1891. That;s when your supposed “Vichy” started!

        I think Phil Best is absolutely correct. On the right we have very good people but they are just too afraid to stand for any convictions. On the left we have bad people but they have passionate intensity about bad things.
        Going back to gay marriage, there was not electoral support for gay marriage when the bill was introduced. But it was passed because of a vocal leftist minority, aided and abetted by a hopelessly biased media and with the support of a supine group on the right who could not see that the destruction of our traditional values is an important matter.
        
        On the right they just want to surrender. If National had held the line we would not have gay marriage today. And that would be just. Because gay marriage is a wrong thing and it destroys and devalues actual marriage.
        
        But the point is that the right has no fight. On this and any other issue. The only thing they care about is managing the economy reasonably competently and lowering marginal tax rates. The rest they don’t care about.
        
        Look at immigration and the sea change we have had there. One reason for Labour and New Zealand first support has been their promise to lower immigration. The change in attitude about immigration has been led by one Donald J Trump who was the only politician to put his head above the parapet and speak out about it.
        
        I actually think New Zealand is a Conservative country of ordinary people who just want to get on with their lives led by the nose by a leftist liberal elite who secretly despise them.

      What is happening in New Zealand is being mirrored in Australia currently .The likes of Cory Bernadi is proud to stand up as a conservative but that doesn’t mean he is a religious nutter or have extreme right views.
      Turnbull is behaving the same as Key and is slowly losing more and more support.There is going to be a major shift to the Conservatives and One Nation in Australia and before we can build on the same here.

        Wise owl – agree with you up to a point. I do think New Zealand is basically Conservative country. However the idea that religious people are nutters is a sad mischaracterisation. Having religious faith is widespread throughout the world. Indeed religious faith is positively correlated with good mental health.
        
        I think the difficulty is that the media seizes on the fact that someone goes to church and immediately condemns them as a fundamentalist nut job or some such title.
        
        However conservatism does have this philosophical base. That there is a body of transcendent truths. Unlike liberalism which embraces everything changing, conservatism believes that some things are true. And hopefully without you choking on your sandwiches – transcendent truth is normally associated with God.

  The projections already are for a million. It all depends on the date it is to happen “by”. If anything it will come later under Labour’s policy. Where was National superior on this particular issue? At least Labour seem to have beliefs about not letting infrastructure and housing deficits just bank up and up and up.

Twyford said the new Government was also pushing ahead with plans for infrastructure bonds serviced by targeted rates in new areas. An infrastructure funding solution was needed before any removal of Metropolitan Urban Limit, which has now become the Rural Urban Growth boundary under the new Unitary Plan.

“It’s that failure of urban growth that’s at the heart of the problems we’ve got with gridlock on the roads and expensive housing. The highly restrictive planning system and the Metropolitan Urban Limit is the sharp end of that, but also infrastructure financing is critical,” he said.

“The thing with the Metropolitan Urban Limit is you’ve got to fix the infrastructure financing first because the rural urban boundary is a proxy for the line between land that has infrastructure and land that doesn’t.

“I want to tackle those two things together and I want to build on the work done by the former Government with special purpose vehicles, but we need to take it a lot further. What we need is a pipeline of finance that is available for the infrastructure for new urban developments.

“You can’t rely on the minister rocking up every six months and writing a cheque. That’s not a sustainable way to do it. You’ve got to be able to tap into debt finance. Make it available for developments that get the tick in terms of quality and reticulation, serviced by a targeted rate on the properties in a new development.”

Twyford acknowledged that any system for infrastructure bonds issued by new authorities such as Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs), which are used in the United States to raise finance for suburban infrastructure, had to ensure that ratings agencies saw them as separate from Councils.

“Critically you’ve got to solve the question of where that debt sits and on whose balance sheet,” he said.

  One curious coda to the RMA debate that concluded last week was that the Opposition parties plus ACT and United Future all voted again during the third reading debate for amendments that would have abolished Rural Urban Growth Boundaries and allowed the financing of infrastructure bonds paid for with targeted rates.
  
  The amendments were defeated by National and the Maori Party.
  
  The irony of a Government that has railed against restrictions on land development by councils voting against removing those restrictions should be noted. And also that the proposal for infrastructure bonds was backed by the right-leaning New Zealand Initiative and voted for by the Greens and Labour. Strange times indeed.

Investigators said they were able to talk with Saipov. It’s unclear what, if anything, investigators learned from him. Though, one official told ABC News he was “proud” of the attack.

        If the Muslims knew that an attack like this would bring the immediate destruction of their town, their family and/or their mosque, wouldn’t this modify their behaviour? Wouldn’t they start to examine their own people more closely and stop preaching, encouraging and tolerating terror acts against society?

  The dead woman in Charlottesville was apparently trapped between the stationary cars. Not one person actually got run “over” by Fields’ own car. Pretty inept ramming murderer, if you ask me. This was not just a footpath or a cycle lane, it was a road full of blockading Antifa. The overstayers are free to leave after being offered resettlement in PNG, but have barricaded themselves in the facility refusing to leave until Australia take them for resettlement on Australian soil.

Twyford said the new Government was also pushing ahead with plans for infrastructure bonds serviced by targeted rates in new areas. An infrastructure funding solution was needed before any removal of Metropolitan Urban Limit, which has now become the Rural Urban Growth boundary under the new Unitary Plan.

“It’s that failure of urban growth that’s at the heart of the problems we’ve got with gridlock on the roads and expensive housing. The highly restrictive planning system and the Metropolitan Urban Limit is the sharp end of that, but also infrastructure financing is critical,” he said.

“The thing with the Metropolitan Urban Limit is you’ve got to fix the infrastructure financing first because the rural urban boundary is a proxy for the line between land that has infrastructure and land that doesn’t.

“I want to tackle those two things together and I want to build on the work done by the former Government with special purpose vehicles, but we need to take it a lot further. What we need is a pipeline of finance that is available for the infrastructure for new urban developments.

“You can’t rely on the minister rocking up every six months and writing a cheque. That’s not a sustainable way to do it. You’ve got to be able to tap into debt finance. Make it available for developments that get the tick in terms of quality and reticulation, serviced by a targeted rate on the properties in a new development.”

Twyford acknowledged that any system for infrastructure bonds issued by new authorities such as Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs), which are used in the United States to raise finance for suburban infrastructure, had to ensure that ratings agencies saw them as separate from Councils.

“Critically you’ve got to solve the question of where that debt sits and on whose balance sheet,” he said.

Get Local Government out of the way.

They are an anathema as far as core infrastructure responsibilities are concerned, preferring instead to piss hundreds of millions away on unecessary BS. e.g. comms budgets, consultants and ‘Well Beings’

Andrew Little wins in the Court of Appeal in respect of one of the unresolved causes of action, on the basis that the unresolved verdicts did not give rise to a further basis for action that survived Mr Hagaman’s death. Costs awarded to him from the estate. Unclear whether this decision will apply to the other 3 unresolved causes of action, but it seems likely.

    Three judges in the Court of Appeal, and they were dealing with a cause of action that the jury was undecided on, so it’s a bit harsh to suggest the decision was biased. The principle that a cause of action in defamation doesn’t survive the death of the plaintiff is pretty well established; the only question is whether the decision was held back until after the election, and that is more likely.

Though the Oct. 30 email says that the DNC is looking for a “staff of diverse voices and life experiences,” it apparently doesn’t mean white men.

DNC’s Data Service Manager Madeleine Leader purportedly wrote in an email that the desire for diversity excludes “cisgender straight white males.”

Leader adds, “I personally would prefer that you not forward to cisgender straight white males, as they are already in the majority.” Cisgender is a term for people whose gender identity matches the sex that they were assigned to at birth.

  So Each 3-year election cycle gets an extra year ~~bribe~~.
