The US has passed tax cuts, even with their giant deficit.

We have a much healthier surplus, but now carpenters, plumbers, farmers, soldiers, checkout operators, vets and all other working NZers don’t get tax relief – instead, we get to pay for rich middle class kids to have a free first year of university studying politics and philosophy!

I would rather a tax cut, say in the realm of $1036 per annum? Is that too much to ask?

    This is where the Nats went wrong.
    Tax cuts should have been in place at least since last April, if not a year before.
    Nats built a nice little surplus and now have to stand back and watch the CoL throw it around with narry a ‘thank you’.
    Lesson learnt – next National Government – cut taxes and operate a small deficit – make the Left run an election campaign on taking money out of the pockets of workers.
    Don’t build a nest egg for the Left to raid and call their own.

        Bullshit. The officials all say that. The then Commerce Commission told Simon Power it would take at least 5 years to get the FMA up and running and the other changes to the old Securities Act. Simon told them 18 months and they did it.
        
        Remember it only took 7 minutes for the House to pass the gold plated super scheme.

    I would also be a lot happier, if the money was spent wisely.
    
    The irony is that I firmly believe in charity and giving as much as I can to deserving charities – however, the government thinks they can do better through their bureaucratic and large scale welfare than charities can through targeted and responsible help!
    
    But when the money is spent on something as silly as university subsidies (already heavily subsidised and increasingly suffering from grade inflation), how is that wise spending? If everyone has a university degree, how do they become better off?

  Although I’m not a big fan of the “free-first year” concept, I think you’ll find that there are a lot more students studying things such as medicine, engineering, law, architecture, vet science, dentistry, optometry, audiology, and science in general rather than the Arts (let alone politics and philosophy in particular). Just saying.
  (Add: Of course, there are a lot doing Commerce subjects as well (accountancy, management, marketing, economics, whatever) – but I will leave people to decide whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing for themselves 🙂

    Without a cost to pay, many people will study any old nonsense, and why not? The tertiary education sector is shockingly bloated as it is, this makes it worse for no overall gain to NZ.

      Will they Jimmy? It will be interesting to see what happens, but I’d be surprised if Philosophy (say)enrolments go through the roof.
      As I understand it, the “free” bit only applies to tuition fees – living costs (in particular, costs for flatting or “dorms”) still have to be met. Or maybe I’ve got that wrong?

        $50/wk for 38 weeks (length of study year) = $1900. Not bad for an extra help with living costs. BONUS!
        
        If unemployed why would you stay on the dole being hassled by WINZ when you can have a year, hopefully studying, but perhaps just pissing around enjoying yourself and the extra $ to spend.

    My G’daughter did Politics, Sociology – BA and
    major Economics for BCom at Ak Uni.
    She felt it would give her a well balanced cross section from which she had enough variation and balance to get a good job.
    In Wellington now after two years, she had a number of good offers from Commerce (Banks) various Departments, after Uni.
    She now with a major Ministry with variations of positions which she enjoys.
    We watch with interest now with new Ministers who think they are more clever than the Departments.

The thing hardly gets used, and clearly on the worst witholders it works. However, that’s beside the point, the darlings shouldn’t have to be chased, it might cause some form of stress which could make them eligible for a life on ACC

  US doesnt use accrual accounting for its government spending like we do, but uses ‘cash’ accounting
  Australia has a foot in both camps, the Treasury uses cash while Finance department uses accrual.
  
  So their $45 bill deficit becomes something like $7 bill
  
  NZs surplus ?
  We are still borrowing $7 bill for the year, based on Treasury Debt Management office numbers

  Even the Germans are worried about the American tax cuts! They worry that the US economy will become far more competitive and that jobs and businesses will relocate to America.
  
  Isn’t that an amazing idea? If we cut taxes here we could reasonably expect to attract investment and businesses and create jobs. This would be good for the ordinary working person here in New Zealand.
  
  The funny thing is that the ordinary working person here in New Zealand is supposed to be represented by the Labour government. But as I posted yesterday, for purely ideological reasons it will be a cool day in hell before this government cuts taxes.

      That’s bullshit booby. For more than 80 years the political left has opposed what it calls ‘tax cuts for the rich’. But big cuts in very high tax rates (including corporate taxes) created more investment and jobs, and ended up bringing in more revenue to the government in the Coolidge, Kennedy, Reagan and Dubbya 43 administrations. This included more – repeat, MORE – tax revenue from the people in the highest income brackets than before.

        Certainly are different needs now. When I worked in the social housing sector in Auckland, demand for state housing was from households with one or more children. A lot of solo parents with one child. Many two parent families with children.
        
        These days nearly half of those on the social housing register are waiting for a 1 bedroom place. So single people or couples, no children.
        
        That’s a big change in recent years and supply of one beddies has not caught up. Reasons for the change are no doubt many, but disability requiring extra support will be a biggie. And the sell off of pensioner housing in many areas. And of course that cheap rent.

        No sadly Alloytoo, Liarbor have guaranteed sitting tenants their right to stay in state houses. Some old duck and her elderly hubby (close to their 80’s) were rejoicing that they wouldn’t be forced from “their house”.
        
        I have an issue with those who insist on staying in 3-4 bedroom statehouses long after their families have moved out. Nevermind about the next generation needing the larger houses.

  I don’t always agree with the views you post EAD but I agree it is a slippery slope the day we start denying people the right to express them.
  There is an insidious creep of totalitarian thinking occuring in the western world lead by a generation who think their views and opinions matter the most; abetted and enabled by the supposed learning institutions who are supposed to challenge this.

      So you think views that you find objectionable should be repressed? Regardless of EADs views he most certainly should have the right to espouse them.
      Who decides what is deemed objectionable? Should guest speakers at universities be denied their platform just because a handful of objectors demand this? That is a slippery slope Stephieboy – I suggest you learn your history.

        Well said SC. There are views and opinions (as opposed to actual physical violence and destruciton of property) that we all might disagree with, to varying degrees. But those views should be shut down by counter debate, rather than unilaterally by someone acting as God.

        It always struck me that burning books was pointless because the *ideas* survived. But that’s why I find the current climate of shouting down and/or preventing alternate views being spoken about (whether left or right is irrelevant) is so dangerous. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and things just fester and smolder in the darkness.

      Stupidboy, zetev mallard duck and Morrissey have got their riding instructions from Fraser House and Dyke Simpson so they are already defending the Peters-Ardern Regime’s indefensible actions – those already taken or promised/implied.
      I disagree with many EAD posts, but I defend his right to express his views, and today I think he is also right.
      As for would be posters and those whose views differ from DPF….. well on many I think DPF is wrong, has views based upon bedtime stories, or is far too soft. And I have said so. But I am still here and when I have the time to express my views forcefully, I really enjoy the platform and freedom that he provides.
      So, until idiots like Stupidboy, zetev mallard duck and Morrissey, learn that, their rubbish does not warrant the time to type a reply !!!!!

        Ztev isn’t quite wrong about the private business issue. But that’s the beauty of private business, we can ‘walk out’ too and find a more liberal one. Twitser will lose and learn.
        
        Our real danger is in ‘hate speech’ laws that make it illegal to ‘offend’ or criticize someone else’s ideology because it’s a ‘religion’.
        
        I’d agree that a large internet business culling in this way is a step towards those kind of ‘hate speech’ laws.

    I don’t care what colour people are, as long as they are decent people who believe we all have the same human rights.
    
    Some of the people most skilled in medicine, classical music, and who are most educated, polite and pleasant to deal with, for instance, are Asians.
    
    Islamists, on the other hand, want a theocracy: ‘kuffar’, gays, women would not have full human rights.
    
    Islamists can be of any race, including European. I’d rather have my black and Asian friends here than a white islamist.

While i support this as it is in our Countries best interest for sercurity and other facts I actually hope this comes back to bite him and others on the arse. Winston Peter is not a saint and the pension episode shows that and his reaction to it being told in going out to sue people that he yet has no evidence to prove they released. But Hipkins can take relief from the fact that this fourth defaulter was detained under an evil and uncaring National Government. It would be unfitting strategy to be continued by the soft-on-law ‘Coalition of Losers’.

I get really annoyed with university students that we pay to get their education and then the leave NZ to go and live in another country (usually Australia!)

To me that is stealing from the taxpayer.

Now Chris Hipkins is going to let them off even
paying 20% of what they owe.

The figures are $100m owing by New Zealanders and 1.7 Billion owing by New Zealanders who have deserted NZ the country that brought them up and paid 80% of their education costs!

The definition of overdue does not include any amount for which a payment plan has been agreed; if, with the Collection Department’s agreement, you are paying $5 a month off your $40,000 loan, none of it is overdue.

I thought this has been tried by a few companies which have fallen over.

NZ is probably too small to do this as a viable business.

  It is perfectly viable to do this to make modular houses with panels etc designed along standardized dimensions etc.
  
  However this only builds the shell. There are also many other parts to building a house.
  
  The real problem is that this is highly automated and does not create the quantity of low-end jobs that everyone wants.
  
  It creates jobs for the people designing the flash software and automation. Those people already have jobs. There is a significant skill shortage in this area. Also, developing the tech would take years, so nothing is going to be built for a long while.
  
  It creates some jobs in the materials supply chains and a few high skills manufacturing jobs in the factory (already a shortage of skilled people), another few driving trucks (already a shortage of truck drivers).
  
  There will also be a few low end jobs sprinkled about, but it does not provide the vast number of low-end hammer-swinging construction jobs that soak up the unskilled.

    Maybe not a bad thing – I have known chippies for about 30 years, long enough to hear some lament they are in a boom/bust industry. When the downturn comes they are always the first to be hit, and when the boom is on they have to work 60 to 70 hour weeks.
    
    Plus there has been a train coming down the track for some 30 years in this country heading straight for low-skilled jobs. At least in big employment projects. Seems like even low-skilled, low-paid service jobs will be the next to be hit by automation.

      They are already hit by automation and it is getting much harder to do “make work” programmes.
      
      A digger replaces 20 blokes with picks and shovels and does a far better job, but needs a skilled operator.
      
      Then come the heavily automated GPS and laser controlled systems. They replace a whole lot of operators, but highly skilled people are needed to set up the designs etc.
      
      Automation relentlessly drives up the need for highly skilled (intelligent) staff where there are already skill shortages and reduces the need for unskilled (less intelligent) staff where there is an excess of people.
      
      While it does not create jobs, automation increases value.

        Hmm. The example of the Industrial Revolution suggests that in the long run that will not be the case – if you mass produce you need consumers with sufficient income to pay for the goods. But yes, the transition in work patterns, both global and local will be difficult for many.

        No, that’s exactly what I’m suggesting happened as a result of the automation and mass production of the Industrial Revolution which provided plentiful new goods at cheap prices. But the initial adjustments in work and income patterns were painful, especially in the 1840s in Britain. Hence migrants fled the worst excesses by migrating to the likes of NZ, Nova Scotia, Australia, America. Indeed even up to the 1920s there were tensions evidenced by the Revolutions of 1848, and the growth of communism and anarchism. Was a time of social tension and even terrorism, much greater than our current obsession with Jihadism. Probably it was the development of the modern welfare states in many Western nations that defused the tensions.

      Some of that depends on what you mean by modular building.
      
      At one extreme it is basically finished “trailer park” style mobile homes. The whole thing is prebuilt and pre-finished. Just dump it off a truck and hook up water, sewerage and power.
      
      At the other extreme there are flat-pack style houses where the walls are pre-built and pre-wired etc and the house shell is then assembled onsite. eg. Sturctural Insulated Panels.
      
      Then there is a range of stuff in the middle:

Analysts from two Western intelligence agencies have now claimed that the exercises, which included artillery, tanks, rocket launches and simulated air and navy raids, were a dry-run for a ‘shock campaign’ against Western European NATO members – including Germany and the Netherlands.

The drills also rehearsed the capture of the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania- as well as Poland, Norway and the non-aligned states of Sweden and Finland, the analysts told German newspaper Bild.

Yep, not surprising. Russia is always looking to expand. Once the oil prices go up, things could get hairy very quickly.

    Stephieboy – I know it’s pure coincidence that after Trump freed up local commanders to fight as conditions on the ground dictated, demanded that his generals thought about winning rather than just fighting, the commanders increased bombing and the number of US troops committed to the front, and those commanders went about actually killing terrorists rather than just moving them from place to place, that the coalition actually defeated Isis.
    
    It is also pure coincidence that after Obama presided over 8 years of anaemic economic growth and high unemployment, that Trump came in, slashed thousands of job killing regulations, promise to bring in businesses and growth and jobs, that the market responded.
    
    Or you could say that Trump is a game changer who under his watch has defeated Isis and presided over the biggest bloom in the US economy for many years.

Just been down to the supermarket and bought my Xmas ham.
Was going to get a big one but changed my mind as once I saw all the large hams in tights waddling around it kind of disgusted me so I settled for a half.
Really felt in the festive mood while I was there though and my heart just melted when I saw a foodbank donation box.
Did my bit chucking in a tin of chickpeas and tomatoes for the battered women and some pet food for the rest.

    It is my understanding that those euthanised, are done so by a vet, as one would expect and they are the lucky ones. It’s the number “unaccounted for” that is truly heartbreaking.

Whether it was Pax Britannica or Pax Americana, it will always be in their interests, not necessarily ours.

The Overseas Investment Commission may have saved the ANZ Bank a shipload of money. The commission today blocked the sale of UDC Finance by ANZ to Chinese group HNA for $660 million.

UDC is a leading lender to industry in NZ and had built a reputation as a solid place for mum and dads to invest cash.

The Chinese bank, Citic, on Monday said a unit of HNA Group – HNA Aviation Group Co. – was having difficulty repaying certain short-term debts. This came just over a week after the Chinese conglomerate said it would not default in the coming year.

HNA is said to owe lenders huge amounts of debt falling due over the year.

Fortune magazine reported yesterday that HNA is selling properties, including in London, Manhattan, and Australia. HNA is believed to have about NZ$26 billion invested in world property, and has stakes in Deutsche Bank, and in the hotelier, Hilton World Wide Holdings.

  The OIC may well also have cost hundreds of Kiwis their jobs. The bid by HNA meant that not one Kiwi was going to be out of a job, all staff were to be retained. Now that UDC is back on the block so to speak we may well see Macquarie Capital renew their interest which will mean a 95% job loss for Kiwi workers. That is not good for anybody.

    A smart government would help someone local like Heartland into ownership, or, better, put UDC on a path of listing on the NZX, without private-equity carpet baggers ripping the guts out of it and selling sharemarket investors the remainder. Didn’t Key or Clark bail out Air NZ? Why not help create some decent size, NZ owned financial institutions?

Non-political story…., Road and Track: The Only McLaren F1 Technician in North America. It’s a good read. I was amused by this part, with a picture…

He also has “the laptop”—a mid-1990s Compaq running custom DOS software created by McLaren when the F1 was new. This gray brick was, for many years, required to access the car’s engine control and body control modules. Today, McLaren uses a modern Windows computer running a software emulator for day-to-day computer maintenance. Hines keeps the vintage Compaq around just in case.

The wreck of Australia’s first submarine HMAS AE1 has been found more than 103 years after it disappeared.

A fresh search to find the vessel that only began last week found it in more than 300 metres of water off the coast of the Duke of York Island in Papua New Guinea.

AE1 vanished off Rabaul on September 14, 1914 and the fate of her 35 Australian and British crew members was one of the biggest mysteries in Australian military history.

A 37-year-old convicted sex offender in the US befriended a Kiwi teen online seeking answers about God and then joined Facebook groups with the teen and his friends. After a four-year online friendship the 17-year-old decided to travel to the US to meet the man.

I feel terrible for this young girl. It was a prank, and a funny one at that. Even the boy that was injured and his Dad didn’t want charges. But the [female] principal of the boys school was, apparently on the warpath.

Kids are kids and teenagers are teenagers. It actually surprised me in this day and age that several girls did this. Thats on them and their license to be themselves.

I’m so tired of the PC bullshit. I’m so sorry this ended up in court. Clearly I am an “old”
