So the 20 year old shithead, three times over the limit, who tried to do a runner after killing a taxi driver with his big black Mercedes CLS after speeding through a red light on Symonds St, was none other than Farshad Bahadori Esfehani, of Mt. Roskill.
Lots of questions over how does a 20 year old raghead get to have a $50,000 Merc, and even more about why a Muslim is out drinking until 5 in the morning.

  There aren’t really any questions about it. We get a lot of (almost exclusively male) students from Saudi Arabia or other Gulf states, and one of the reasons they’re sent here is so they can sow their wild oats with slutty western girls instead of making trouble for their families at home. Killing an Indian isn’t a big deal from a Gulf Arab pov, but the being-caught-drinking part would be potentially embarrassing, if it hadn’t happened in NZ.
  
  The real question is for us: why do we provide this service for them? Hint: answer is measured in $.

  Two cases in court NZ style. Taxi man gets killed by a drunk driver. Drunk driver gets treated like royalty and gets bail until February,
  Man in New Plymouth celebrating Christmas with one extra drink in his system. He gets hungry goes next door to his neighbours house raids his fridge.
  Neighbour calls Police. Man gets arrested for taking two bottle of soft drinks.
  Appears in court charged with burglary. Bail is refused remanded in custody.Until early January.
  Maybe if he had allegedly killed a taxi driver he
  would have been given Bail.
  Seems drunken driving causing death, as against being drunk raiding neighbours fridge with bail refused to the offender deserves a lesser type of judicial consideration.

    The difference is one of intent. The drunk driver probably didn’t intend tcrash into another car, but the lowlife who broke into his own NEIGHBOUR’S house to steal his property did it deliberately with intent. Thank god I don’t have arseholes like that as neighbours.

  My daughter works in Mt Roskill, so I drive her there and back several times a week. I consider Mt Roskill to be the most dangerous area to drive in Auckland. The speed, lack of consideration for other users, lack of basic courtesy, arrogance, driving straight out of sidestreets, reversing out of angle carparks without checking if a car is behind them, not giving way on roundabouts let alone stop signs and red lights……

      My slightly random thought process has gone from bombs to potholes….
      Mt Roskill is also has the most poorly maintained roads in Auckland, from what I have observed. (not counting unsealed rural roads at the north and south of Auckland)
      Potholes, big areas where the road has collapsed under the weight of traffic, roundabouts falling apart with the kerbing missing entirely, probably because of the number of times they’ve been hit by cars (or maybe the kerb blocks have just been stolen!)

Thanks to srylands for putting me in the direction of Spotify so that I could escape from the ghastly pc style of RNZ Concert with its force-feeding of Maori by white guilt-ridden liberals and its perpetual anti Israel and anti Trump propaganda masquerading as ‘news’.

Only negative thing about Spotify is that when I tried to register for its ad-free option I was presented with three gender options: male, female, non-binary. I refuse to sign up to something that includes a factual falsehood! I’d rather put up with the Spotify ads than concede a matter of principle!

And no, Ztev, stiffie and Morrie I am NOT a ‘snowflake’!

        Agree – even in the [very rare] cases of XXY (Kleinfelter’s) male sex develops, whilst in Turner syndrome (X only with the other damaged or lost) female sex develops. There are physical differences associated with these syndromes though.
        
        Also, before somebody jumps on me, there have only been a handful of cases of true hermaphroditism recorded in humans (both male and female sex organs) but even then, the child eventually decides a gender in time, usually as secondary sex characteristics kick in at puberty (in the old days the Drs would assign a sex and remove the other organs).
        
        In contrast “intersex” is a gendered decision. We don’t yet understand how much of that is nature (genetic) or nurture (choice). Its complex.

Bed taxes. Queenstown is swamped by tourists and the locals can’t afford the infrastructure. It’s appalling.
A realistic infrastructure bed tax would be in the region of 50 dollars a night. Why not user pays – why should locals be swamped with the costs ?

    They have good reason to stop it. A bed Tax on a med to large Hotel can add $1 million in cost.
    In a low margin business, that’s a lot. And explains why despite the Auckland Council wanting more Hotels, no one wants to do them since they brought on in.
    They don’t work.
    I can’t comment on Queenstown Councils financial situation but in Auckland the answer is cut your costs your wasting bastards instead of taxing the heck out if the things which give the income in the first place.

      If you honestly think that Queenstown hotels are “low margin business” then you are completely cracked.
      
      The QLDC is indebted because it has to provide infrastructure to accommodate over 100,000 people in a town with 17,500 permanent residents. No amount of cost cutting can ever close that gap, which is why pro-business Mayors like Jim Boult have been asking for bed taxes for over twenty years.

        I have been involved in the development of around 10 Hotels from being a hole in the ground(including a luxury resort and two Apartment Hotel in Queenstown)and reckon I know more about their profitability than a moron like you.
        When you factor in return on investment their profit is low.
        
        As I said I can’t comment on Qtwn but in Auckland bed taxes have killed future hotel growth in a city which could do with 1000 more beds.

      As for Queenstown – fewer tourists and more $ extracted from them for New Zealand should be the way. For the next few hundred years

    Sooner than you think. Look north to Fiji to see the damage tourism taxes have done. Then look north east to Samoa, Rarotonga and even Hawaii to see who has been the beneficiary of Kiwi tourists looking for better value.
    
    On a slightly different note I was at a top Auckland restaurant on Christmas Day and the service was at not quite its normal high standards. On questioning the slightly embarassed owner it appears that his regular European staff who migrate here for the summer peak season have headed to Australia instead as they want to line up jobs there for when Winston introduces his anti-immigration bill.

Amazingly stuff has an article listing the 10 big achievements of Donald Trump. This is amazing because they are usually 95% against Donald Trump all of the time. In the same way they were 95% for his predecessor Obama.

Media bias is such a huge factor in shaping our opinions. Most New Zealanders would say that Obama was a great president and that Donald Trump is terrible.

The reverse is actually true. Under Obama the United States experienced their lowest rate of economic growth for decades, endless wars in which they were not winning, racial rioting the likes of which has not been seen since the 60s and a lack of respect for the United States throughout the world.

After one year of this president the United States economy is booming, Isis has been defeated in Syria and Iraq, racial rioting has almost entirely gone and the United States is totally respected again.

My predictions for 2018 are that the United States economy will boom even more, Trump will begin building a wall to secure the border and the United States will be the major player on the world stage.

However the media will never tell you that. They have given no credit to Trump for the booming economy and the defeat of Isis. That’s why it’s good to go to fair-minded blogs like this one, where you can actually have your say and express different opinions and the moderator is fair and light handed.

Finally I would like to say well done to DPF for hosting such a very good New Zealand blog site!

  Most of these things could actually be legitimately claimed by Obama. The US economy has too much lag to be instantly affected by a change of govt. The Trump effect is more likely to be evident in 2018 and beyond. The economy was already on a strong growth path, ISIS was already being defeated when Trump assumes office. Afghanistan is neither better nor worse.
  Also a bit harsh to blame Obama for the GFC. He inherited it from Bush. It is about as silly as the left blaming Key for the large borrowing in 2009 to 2011. Also a product of the GFC (and the earthquakes).

      Sorry, but Obama strangled the economy. He owns the poor results.
      The last two quarters for Trump have been over 3% growth with the Fed predicting over 3% for this quarter.
      It’s the annual figure which counts because continuity demonstrates sustainability.

      You are wrong. 2014 was 2.4% and 2015 was 2.6%. 2016 was less at 1.6%
      The looss of growth was during the GFC (2008 to 2011).
      Even though you do not know the facts, even you would be hard pressed to say Obama was the cause of the GFC.
      The US did far better than Europe in getting out of the GFC largely due to federal borrowing and QE.
      Obama will be seen to be in the mid range of US Presidents of the last 100 years. So far Bush and Harding will be the worst, one for worsening the Great Depression, the other for Iraq.

    Wayne Mapp – totally cannot agree with you that Isis was being defeated when Trump took office. Obama himself said that Isis was a generational problem. Well actually under Trump it didn’t take generations to defeat Isis, it took 12 months!
    
    Trump did a number of specific things that help to defeat Isis. First of all he gave new more deadly armament to the Kurds who were fighting Isis. Secondly he gave local control of the war to the local generals rather than command and control back in the White House. Thirdly he demanded that the generals pursued victory.
    
    So what we saw was a vast increase in pace and intensity of operations. General Mattis concluded that all they had been doing was moving the terrorists from one location to another. He told the local commanders to pursue annihilation of the terrorists where they were.
    
    The result was the generational problem was defeated in Syria and Iraq. Obama said that he wanted to defeat Isis but no one really believed him. Trump said that we would bomb the hell out of Isis and everyone did believe him and he followed through on that promise.
    
    Face it – if Obama’s successor Hillary Clinton was in office Isis would still have the caliphate. Under Trump that wasn’t going to happen.
    
    The great advantage of Trump is that he does fight and he does fight to win. So in Syria and Iraq the coalition forces have won. And that was due to President Trump.

        As for your point about the “movement” dying: it’s hardly surprising that the owners would find a way to force most of the players to obediently be quiet. There’s still the problem of the 24 who refused to take part in the North Korean style loyalty ceremony the other day. What’s going to be done about those guys?
        
        Colin Kaepernick, meanwhile, has better things to do. I reckon that when he finishes his current round of celebrity appearances and award acceptances, he should play a much more exciting kind of football, where his brilliant running would be an asset. Imagine Kaepernick turning out for the Auckland Blues or the Queensland Reds or, even better, for Stade Toulouse.

It’s been decades since Abba Eban, the late Israeli diplomat and politician, [Flipper met and was able to discuss the “Israel” situation with Eban when as Foreign Minister he visited Wellington in the late 1960s] made the observation that “Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”
The latest mistake by the Palestinians proves Eban right again.
Against all reason, Palestinian leaders are hardening their response to President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
President Mahmoud Abbas, elected to a four-year term nearly 13 years ago, initially grumbled and seethed but didn’t close any doors.
But emboldened by the toothless grandstanding of the United Nations General Assembly and fearful of Hamas terrorists, Abbas now says he will not accept any American plan for peace or consider America as a broker.
Instead, he’s turning to Russian President Vladimir Putin for help.
This is foolishness on stilts, with Trump eager to make a deal. For Abbas to refuse to hear him out is a replay of the Palestinian rejectionism Yasir Arafat specialized in — talk peace while encouraging violence and hope Israel somehow goes away.
But whatever you do, never, ever make a final deal to recognize Israel’s right to exist.
On a recent trip to Israel, we heard a Foreign Ministry official sum up the truth about why Palestinians always walk away from negotiations and turn to violence. “It’s not about the 1967 borders,” the official said, “it’s about 1948.”

Keeping Stock

I traveled down to Wellington yesterday to have a belated Christmas lunch with my son. It was an uneventful trip down, although I noticed north-bound traffic was especially heavy around Otaki and Levin.

Coming home yesterday was a different story. The first traffic snarl-up was going up the hill from Whenua Tapu cemetery to Pukerua Bay. The traffic was heavy through Paekakariki, but spread out once we were back on the four-lane highway leading on to the Kapiti Expressway. The “fun”was just around the corner.

About 2km from the northern end of the expressway, I came to a grinding halt, and it took the best part of an hour to get moving again. The log-jam was around where two lanes merge into one at the Peka Peka end, and from what I had observed heading south in the morning, there had been problems all day.

I note that work has started on the extension of the expressway as far as Whirokino, where the elderly trestle is being replaced. Prior to the election, National proposed four-laning through to Sanson, which would be a huge step forward. That however is now off the books, and one wonders what progress will be made on the rest of SH1 north of Wellington.

I finally made it back to Whanganui after almost five hours, although that included stops for petrol and a feed. I was in no rush, but all around me on the expressway were some unhappy families heading off on holiday. I wonder how much festive cheer they had towards our coalition government and its Green hangers-on.

  That is the problem, KS. Completing sections of an expressway only shifts the bottleneck. An holistic approach (4 lanes to Sanson – I would suggest 4 lanes to north of Bulls) is the only answer.

    Get 100,00 new migrant workers or whatever it takes and put 4 lanes all the way through to Sanson. All the work to be done contemporaneously. That may take a 100,000 earthmoving machines too and ancillary plant. Shouldn’t cause too much disruption. I’m sure the lower North Island could take a break from going to work for a year or so until the highway is reopened. Freight can come by coastal freighter or air.
    Any repercussions to the Auckland or Northern economy can be dealt with by way of temporary subsidy assistance. The South won’t be affected.

      The Bulls bridge replacement will have to happen anyway. It’s a miracle that it hasn’t been the scene of a major truck crash which could take the road out for a week. Think of it in the context of a MINIMUM four lanes from Dunedin to Whangarei with six in a number of places.

I greatly appreciate the new connection will continue to improve travelling time in and out of the city.   Much the same happens at the top of the northern motorway where 2 lanes merge into one.
  Then, of course, there are the Warkworth & Wellsford bottlenecks which can stop traffic both ways for miles on end.
  I am willing to put money on the fact that the bottleneck will move north when the Puhoi – Wellsford extension is completed in 2021.
  The fun will be getting approval to link that extension to SH1 at the top of the Brynderwyns.

  I sympathise. I missed the horror by driving from Wellington to Auckland on Christmas morning, leaving at 5am. It was marvellous.
  
  It will be interesting to see the next round of NZTA funding allocations. Expect to see less roads and more public transport and cycleways. If you are going away on holiday in New Zealand, such investment is about as useful as a snowflake in hell.

    Xmas traffic snarlups have been going on for decades – I don’t know why more people don’t just travel at a better time.
    
    For over 30 years we had a bach at Waihi Beach and often went there for weekenders. Leave there on a Sunday at 1pm it was two hours door to door back to AKL, leave at 3 or 4pm and it was usually four hours; or more on a really bad day.
    
    Moral of the story – leave around 1pm!

      I “live” in New Plymouth, my other place is in the Bay of Plenty. I can work from anywhere, and so I shuttle freely between both houses. If Im in the BoP, and I have a F2F meeting in NP, Ill set it for 930AM. Ill walk out the Vegas door at 6AM, and Im pulling into my carpark, 315k’s later, at 925AM at the latest, without fail.
      
      Best run I ever did door to door was 3 hours flat, leaving at 3AM, where a Ferrari went past me as I went through Benedale, and he eventually turned off onto the Old Taupo Road in Vegas. That was one hell of a drive 😀

  I was contributing to that traffic jam too. While four-laning to Sanson would be very beneficial to me personally, I can’t picture a good cost-benefit ratio for the country in spending billions so that the traffic jams we get on a few days per year are moved up to Sanson. In fact, I’d be wildly pissed off at a government that decided to waste my taxpayer cash on that instead of more useful work.

Sympathies on your arduous journey home, KS @ 8:32. But “our coalition government and its Green hangers-on” can’t yet be expected to take responsibility – for a couple of years or more – for the roading inadequacies that you encountered.

As a generalisation, the National Government’s nine years at the helm saw too great a proportion of the country’s finite public expenditure directed towards welfare, education, health, regulation and well-meaning but seemingly-unlimited ‘soft’ aspects of what I call quangoism.

What suffered in the central competition for funds, inevitably, was the share of investment that went into ‘hard’ infrastructure like roading, rail and port assets for the longer-term development of our country. The ongoing balancing of competing ‘needs’ is an enormous challenge – made worse by unscheduled Kaikoura and CHC earthquake-type surprises which have generally been handled well.

But New Zealand will not realise its true potential as a vibrant, successful market economy if successive governments continue to scrimp on future capital investment. There needs to be practical and effective spending limitations and disincentives on today’s social and non-productive pressure-points (including the draining costs of an insanely-bloated and expensive bureaucracy).

    It’s too late now, KS. Of course Labour will undo National’s future plans, that’s what new Governments do, but some of National’s future investments were already well overdue (in terms of actual need, not Joyce’s “too little, too late” 2016 and 2017 Budgets).
    
    Even while I accept the constraints imposed by the scale of the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes, National’s 9 years were characterised by too many ‘soft’ options. Key’s Government and that of English were motivated excessively by ‘popular’ policies rather than enforcing financial disciplines that would enable meaningful increases in much-needed capital investment.
    
    Here’s an example. National lived out grandly on its famous Budget increases in social benefits, the first such increases in close to 30(?) years, acting as if that move was a political masterstroke. National taunted Labour with this bit of political cleverness, and it was all great fun. But at what cost? How much national, structural investment was foregone to facilitate Labour’s 10 minutes of embarrassment?
    
    I voted National this year with strong reservations. But there’s no other meaningful party that is not seriously further to the left, economically and socially. However, I would prefer to vote for a National Party not deliberately positioning itself in the very centre of a port-leaning ship’s deck. I want a National Party with proper 5-year, 10-year and 20-year plans for the country’s development, fully costed, and with budgets adjusted annually to take account of each year’s historical experience. I want to see seriously-upgraded capital investment in the country’s physical infrastructure, not increased ‘social’ spending by a bloated bureaucracy. (And I want to see a future National Government trim back that bloated bureaucracy to no more than two-thirds its present size and cost.)

Which is $48,7 billion. $285m is just piss nothing of their 8 billion. By the way NZ pays $6.8 million.

  The $285 mill was just a “shot across the bow” in much the same way that President Trumps repeated comments about the EU having to pay it’s agreed proportion of it’s defense bill got the EU countries in a lather and actually starting to do something, in some cases.

This can be from those like Don Brash, concerned about the proliferation of the Maori language in public space, cultural change with demographic change and the urbanisation of society with a growing population (not to be confused with concern about the environment which is common amongst the younger generation also).

      Grumpy old white men? OK, lets introduce race into the discussion…. As well as English, my second language is Spanish and I speak French quite passably. Because of these two languages I can understand Italian more or less and also some Portuguese. I also speak a very basic level of Mandarin and some Hindi too.
      
      In my opinion the main reasons for learning a language are either that it is useful to you (like living or working in a country) or that you are interested in the culture.
      
      Neither of these things applies to Maori as far as I’m concerned and I’m never likely to learn it, nor be remotely interested in it. I can’t imagine what the language of a people who couldn’t even write, do mathematics or science, build architectural structures or explore music and philosophy could possibly offer me.

Re-post of my comment on Stuff – somewhere it will be published – unlike stuffwits who might censor it.

People wanting to become NZ citizens should apply for citizenship or residency the same way that anyone else has to.

Instead of going to a country on the likely pretence of a ‘student visa’ or ‘work visa’ with no intention of ever leaving.

A work visa is not akin to the process of citizenship the way that a learner licence is to graduating to a full licence. A work visa does not make anyone a citizen. It’s to work in NZ and at some point return. Am I missing something?

I hope the givealittle contributors continue to pay ongoing costs for these people if they want them living in NZ. Why should all NZ taxpayers provide welfare to non-NZ citizens on NZ work visas – and unable to work?
