Yesterday there was an article on Kiwiblog saying that Poland was “attacking free speech”.

This sounds more like what the “freedom loving democracies” of the West where Governments regularly arrest people for “hate speech” or posting the wrong things on social media than the Poland I know.

Remembering the Polish as freedom loving people, I was keen to get to the truth behind the spin blasted out by the MSM.

I spoke to a friend in Gdansk and he said ever since the so called “refugee crisis” of 2014, there has been massive efforts by NGOs & the Foreign Press to guilt trip Eastern European countries into opening up their borders. Particularly active has been the likes of George Soros and his his multi billion dollar “Open Society” which has been spending untold sums of monies to spew forth propoganda and undermining elected Governments in order to guilt Poland to open it’s borders to the 3rd world.

What Poland has been subjected to usual tactics of calling people “racists”, refugee puff pieces, sob stories and sympathetic photos of dead boys on beaches as well as most insidiously, “critical theory” (thanks Max Horkheimer for that wonderful gift!) with a constant shaming and guilt tripping Eastern Europeans on their military histories, art, culture and achievements. Most insidiously though, was these actors employing repeated collective shaming of the Polish nation about “being in cahoots with them Nazis”.

The Polish Government, having learned from the failings of the West, drew a line in the sand at these repeated attacks of the Polish people and passed a law making it illegal in Poland to pump holo-guilt propoganda.

It just goes to show that reality is far different from the narrative of the Western MSM. When it comes to forcing more diversity upon us, nothing is lower than the staging of that photo of the young boy in the beach but emotional blackmail is a close 2nd.

You have actually transgressed, instead like everybody else formed a conversations, on National Standards, with no replacement ,and Charter Schools.
The Teachers Unions I see are ecstatic at you having done what they want – all they want now is the 14.5% wage increases.
You are sufficiently young and arrogant to believe that by the time of the next election, whenever that may be, that you can have enough conversations to show what a clever smart arse you are.
Please accept this starter to remind you that we – myself and many many others, will not let this flow quietly under the bridge.
We will continue by all means (not useless MSM) of what you have done.
I believe that as one of the serious points of policy you have transgressed, and we will not let you or the Losers forget.

  Do not lose any sleep over it. Three strikes will be repealed before the year is out. Seems the Court of Appeal is not even bothering to issue its judgment on the three strikes Crown appeals as this will soon be moot.
  National is so stick in the mud, vindictive etc that it has allegedly filled the jails with offenders who need not be there. Labour has the miracle cure for such offenders meaning that they can remain in the community and have seen the error of their ways.

So Kim Dotcom is trying to sue the NZ Government for $7B for busting him and bringing about the downfall of Megaupload. This would make him optimist of the year. He seems to think that Megaupload was a legal operation. However looking at its operation as a whole it was beyond reasonable doubt a major breach of copyright as discussed fully in a FBI report several years ago. In any case it is hard to see how the NZ Police etc contributed to the downfall of Megaupload, it fell over when the USA authorities pulled the plug on its USA based servers. He apparently wants to sue the US Government as well, but he has a problem with this as he AFAIK has no access to the USA courts system while he is a fugitive from American justice. Even if the extradition application falls flat in NZ he remains ‘wanted’ in USA.
Court of Appeal is soon to hear his appeal against extradition, might know the outcome in 6-9 months or longer.

    At the end of the current procedure (which could easily go to the Supreme Court) the Immigration Minister has to decide whether to allow the extradition to take place. If it is adverse to Dotcom, he can judicially review that decision and set the whole process in motion again. By the time it is all over, Jacinda’s unborn child could have had two terms in office.

      Breaching copyright for commercial purposes (like making money from the breach) is a serious offence in New Zealand punishable by five years jail (and there are laws concerning parties to offences – see s66 Crimes Act 1961). It is not the FBI who turned a ‘civil crime’ (whatever you mean by this), it is Congress and Senate who made law that breach of copyright is a federal crime and the FBI (along with the Secret Service and other federal enforcement agencies) is required to enforce federal law. It is most probably a requirement of the Berne Convention that nations make breach of copyright for commercial gain a crime.
      The other point to note is New Zealand film producers (eg Peter Jackson) have also suffered from Dotcom’s activities, not just the big Hollywood studios.
      I may do a comment sometime explaining why the Megaupload scheme was a serious criminal breach of copyright.

        Those with copyright need to find a better distribution model that embraces the internet at a price people will pay.
        Spotify and others are doing it.
        If the entertainment industry had front footed the thing and partnered Mega then they would be years ahead.
        They are slowly coming to and realizing they have no choice. Netflix is dragging the film industry in.
        Newspapers, TV channels etc are going to struggle and die.

    Unfortunately there is no ‘bright line’ which distinguishes something as ‘manifestly unjust’. Judges will start off with the dictionary meaning but would take account of how other judges have ruled on ‘manifestly unjust’. Judges must also respect rulings on ‘manifestly unjust’ from higher courts.
    Judges have ruled that LWOP would be ‘manifestly unjust’ either because of a history of mental illness (most of the cases) or because the ‘first strike’ crime is at the low end of seriousness eg while pinching a policewoman’s behind is ‘sexual assault’ (a ‘strike’ crime) it would be right at the low end of seriousness.

    Interesting VP since this is a problem where there is a herd of elephants in the room and not just one. The contract for such a massive building alone will have several Ministers having to jump hurdles for starters. With the levels of incompetence seen so far in just over 100 days makes it more likely it will be another disaster full of unintended consequences. They cower at every challenge to their ideology which is as lame as their fall back arguments of blaming National. They NEVER understand it is their previous decisions that have created manpower shortages in the trades because they cut apprenticeship programs. Opting for more silly people with a degree that never held any potential future employment.
    Just like passing the buck by closing all the funny farms and leaving it to become a serious problem in the community.

  My knowledge on these things is sketchy, but I thought for these people to obtain work visas it had to be shown that the workers were not available locally.
  The visa application was made yesterday and they are expected here next month. Presumably they have exhausted the local pool of the particulate tradesmen they require.
  However there was a bloke on the radio the other day who claimed he informed these people some time ago he could supply them with tradesmen, but they never replied. Now it’s too late. There’s no way of verifying this claim, but if true there is an obvious rort.
  The builder would have known at the start of the project when various tradesmen are required and at what point he would need to apply for work visas to ensure Chinese workers are brought here at minimum legal wage.
  Clearly there’s not two hundred local tradesmen available at such short notice – no doubt at higher cost.

      Not true Paulus, this is a case of a developer trying to get labour on the cheap. It has been widely publicised in Auckland that one sub-contractor was contacted when initial contracts were being let. The sub-contract company said they had they had the staff then, they were able to pencil them in then and they have the staff now.
      
      So where is the problem? it is cost and labour terms and conditions. Once again we have a foreign company wanting to circumvent minimum labour conditions. Whether you are a National or CoL supporter this is wrong and Lees-Galloway & others must stop it! Else, NZ will be no better than the UK and Europe where employment conditions of taxpaying citizens are eroded by cheap imported labour. Auckland had a similar development boom in the 1980s and did not need to resort to importing cheap foreign labour then and does not need to today.
      
      As has been pointed out, look at some of the poor workmanship that has been seen in Christchurch by the wholesale importation of labour from overseas.

  As long as there is a growing demand for housing, house prices will tend towards the cost of developing land and building new houses. The bare land cost is insignificant. Costs of development, infrastructure and building are bloated but no one has the guts to get these costs under control. If the cost of new housing can be reduced by (say) 10% then that will knock 10% off house prices across the board.
  Possibly house prices may ease slightly as there is a transition of houses and flats from the rental market to the owner-occupier market. Air BnB is arguably transitioning some units from the rental to the hospitality market which could harden prices slightly.

        Meh, times have changed, and agriculture is now about scale and irrigation so Pukekohe is not particularly valuable; it’s fields are too small and hilly and are non-irrigated so not particularly productive.
        Dairy farming for a decade or two makes pretty much any land good for horticulture (adds about 10mm/year of high quality top soil). So pukekohe is now easily substituted for. Hell, Ashburton district by itself can just about feed the whole of NZ (and is responsible for producing high proportion of the world’s seeds).

  I struggle with some of the blogs and this is
  becoming one I struggle with. Freedom of the press and all that is all very well, but there is nothing to learn from a vast majority of the back and forth.
  I am free to not comment or read the blog I know, but that does not add to freedom of information when people decide not to comment or read a blog. It becomes a controlled space because people choose not to comment.

So National MP’s have held a two day retreat/ caucus. Bill English had no idea if leadership would be raised during it but anyway remains leader. Such a retreat would be an ideal time to review leadership since the matter can be discussed, MP’s left to meditate on it overnight and a decision taken the next day – no debilitating messiness day after day (which is no doubt what MSM and Cam are hoping for).
Interesting too that MSM journos think they know better how National MP’s should run their affairs. MSM should stick to their knitting – by their nature they do not know how to run a party.
Much of the caucus would be about strategic direction. No point in direct attacks on Jacinda, that would go down like a lead balloon. Trick is for caucus to identify weak spots in coalition and exploit these and set a theme so MP’s can mount individual but coordinated attacks in their speeches, at select committees etc. Charter schools seems a good one – Jacinda found she needed to get it off the table as an election issue but seems to have double flipped (the teachers unions want a return on their election ‘investment’).
We have James Shaw yelling at National through a bullhorn to support his climate change proposals – seems he does not have the balls to contact Bill personally on this. Seems that Greens are just content to be an appendage of Labour and letting Winston get away with doing what he wants.

And it has been great to see him come out swinging at the Prime Minister over Partnership Schools. The meme doing the rounds at the moment says it all; over a photograph of Ms Ardern, Kelvin Davis and others cooking a bbq at Waitangi, it says:

  It was through attacking Labour on education (in that instance multiple problems with NCEA) that English won the respect of his colleagues after being dumped as leader after the 2002 election. Interesting too that the COL are so keen on batch bungling so many issues with every new piece of legislation they put up. Sure it all relates to education but it signals they have carried forward their lany ways from opposition. Most of us saw their intended changes as a mamoth task not to mention the grouping of so may contentious issues together being a very clumsy way to go about it. It is going to make all new bills sent to select committees another kind of hell for the COL.
    While it might seem like a good idea to the COL it will not provide any time saving but rather extend the intended time frame of their changes. As well as so many additional ammendments as a result of poorly constructed legislation.
    The increasing number of inquiries are not helping their predicament apart from having to actually avoid having make a decision.
    This is without doubt the best ever time to be in opposition as it might create an unintended consequence of old WP creating a Fol Factor legacy. The chance to cut the crap and get this socialist idieoligy back in the box on the shelf where the issues “pending” decisions are stored.

  Yes peterwn the targeting option is the way to strengthen their own party as the attack the weaknesses in the COL. IMO Bill English added another feather to his hat by making the retreat more a party affair than just a caucus gathering. He obviously hears much better what the party ids saying than what they Media party have to say.
  There are targets by the bucket in the COL but it requires a sound strategy to make the most of such a feast. It must be issue/Minister/Party/COL with serious attention given to the formulation of the question. As we note from so many U turns and changes in what they have said then and now the COL has a very short attention span. To the PM. Does stand COL stand by the secret agreement policy plans? If so what are they?
  Luckily there is a strong line-up of competent MPs itching to get a question in as well as intentions to involve more from the back bench. Another feather for Bill English and we will get a chance to see that there is strength in their numbers while seeing the strengths of those numbers. Go Blue.

Will Poverty Bay be regaled with a snappy new Maori name? Perhaps not snappy and brisk: Turanganui-a-kiwa.

(Since Kiwiblog is published in English rather than NZ Pidgin, I’ve deleted the macrons.)

The views of Kiwiblog’s Gisborne commentator/analyst/reporter, Maggy, would be interesting.

Gisborne’s Mayor, Meng Foon, thinks the name change will “go through”, and the Maori-dominated Geographic Place Names Board (that’s its old name) is on a mission to re-Maorify New Zealand place names.

The name “Poverty Bay” is a talking point, and a colourful reference to New Zealand’s first encounter with the modern world.

The proposed Maori name could be abbreviated to TAK. How long before the region would be nicknamed Takky?

The Poverty Bay name change raises the problem of names in the country’s two official spoken languages.

The logical, sensible and workable solution to Maori pressure for re-Maorifying country names is to have parallel names. In English, the region would remain Poverty Bay. In Maori, it could be Tūranganui-ā-kiwa, complete with macrons.

In line with its neurotic fiddling with names, what was named the Geographic Place Names Board is now called “New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa”.

The drive to re-Maorify New Zealand place names ramped up while National’s Maurice Williamson was Land Information Minister. That portfolio covers LINZ, the Government organisation which hosts the place names board.

Williamson moved on to a plum taxpayer-funded job, NZ Consul-General in Los Angeles.

The present Minister in charge of LINZ, and hence place names, is the Green, Eugenie Sage.

  Dual names: This requires both Maori and non-Maori names be used in official documents. Aoraki / Mount Cook is an example. The requirement of the board is down to this level: “The formatting convention used by the NZGB is for dual names to be separated by a forward slash with a space either side.”
  
  Alternative names: Either one of the official Maori and non-Maori names can be used in official documents. Examples: Te Ika-a-Māui (for the North Island) and Te Waipounamu (for the South Island).
  
  Recorded names: These have appeared in at least two publicly available authoritative publications or databases. “They are unofficial because they have not been assigned, altered, discontinued, approved, adopted, concurred with or validated by the NZGB. Many of the place names recorded on official maps and charts are outside the NZGB’s jurisdiction, such as homesteads, roads, streets, tracks and lighthouses. Other recorded names, like Wellington, were in common use before the creation of the NZGB, so they haven’t been dealt with by the NZGB to become official names.”

    It was never called the Geographic Place Names Board. It was established as the New Zealand Geographic Board in the 1940s. I should have thought someone so obsessed with supposedly correct names would get that right.
    I don’t know when it adopted its co-equal title to become New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa.
    I’m quite happy with many parallel names, and that is in fact what has happened in many cases.

        You can avoid using macrons, if you don’t like them, by replacing them by two of the same letter. The macron in Māori indicates a long vowel sound. So you could write Maaori if you wanted to (despite it looking a little silly).
        
        I’m not sure what the objection is. All modern operating systems and keyboards can access macrons and accents trivially. Microsoft even produced a Māori keyboard especially for Māori television.

  Sorry for the long post… many points to cover.
  
  1. To date, I have not heard anyone refer to the region/district as Turanganui a Kiwa in their daily speech.
  
  2. Original land settlement maps show name for the district as the Turanganui #2 Block… and use Turanga as the name for the European settlement (which is now where Gisborne sits).
  
  3. Cook named the Bay as well as the District – Poverty Bay.
  There will be navigational regulations about changing the name of Poverty Bay (maps, shipping, GPS..)
  
  4. There has been debate/discussion about the appropriateness of the name Poverty Bay since the 1880s.
  
  5. In a recent Gisborne Herald webpoll there was steady opposition (70-75%) to a name change.
  
  6. The name change seems to be favoured (?is being pushed) by the local iwi – Rongowhakaata.
  
  7. I’ve no idea whether a larger iwi around here – Ngati Porou- is in favour or indifferent to the proposed name change.
  
  8. A more common name being used for the Gisborne district (as opposed to the Poverty Bay region) is Tairawhiti.

    The name Gisborne was adopted in honour of the Hon. William Gisborne, Colonial Secretary in the Fox Ministry. The name was adopted in 1872 to replace the name Turanga, partly due to the fact that Turanga (shortened form of Turanga-nui-a-Kiwa) was often confused with Turangi and Tauranga.
    
    I thought when reading Jack’s entry that Turanga was spelt wrong as Tauranga means an anchorage (from memory). But apparently Turanga means “standing place” . Interestingly Taupō’s full name is Taupō nui a tia, so seems like a common naming pattern (ie after someone) but have often been shortened for convenience.

But when the exact same seismic testing is done for offshore fault lines and subduction zones, those whales and dolphins are completely fine with it. We have all heard of how successful the Key govt was in growing the economy, but at what cost ? Having my weekly travel time to and from work increase by 15-30 minutes/day, if my travel times could revert back to those of 10 years ago then.
I am prepared to give my vote now to anyone with a real vision, but I am doubtful.
The report said severe congestion is expected to increase by 30 per cent at peak hours, and 50 per cent between the morning and evening peaks.
This is NOT acceptable to me, where are our visionary leaders ? Reverting to a tax to modify behaviour displays to me No vision, no leadership

  What counts is growth in GDP per capita. That has been pretty flat.
  
  GDP itself has been pushed up by opening the immigration doors.
  
  To illustrate the difference in GDP and GDP per capita consider India.
  
  India is ranked fourth in the world in GDP. In GDP per capita it is ranked 157th. The latter measures the wealth of the average Indian.

      Especially when population growth through high immigration is a factor, GDP per capita is the statistic to watch.

    I had moved closer to work, and starting work earlier. Once you have picked the low hanging fruit then what? Many new green field housing developments are on the outer limits of the city, what for them?
    I feel for those who’s work is in delivery e.g truck drivers, couriers etc. There is a cost that industry incurs that has been passed onto the consumer. e.g. fewer concrete deliveries as reduced turnarounds.
    Pay more road tax you obviously don’t know who it works !! Exercise tax and GST from petrol goes to central govts general funds. Buses and trains are subsidised by rates- councils.

The regulatory burden in appeasing armies of Nimbies, Maori, greens, PC brigade, health and safety, regulatory arse-covering make it economically impossible and given all the vested interests there is no hope of this being fixed.
  
  So give up on Auckland and leave. It’s the only rational choice, because no matter how diligent the govt is it’s infrastructure problems cannot be fixed in your working lifetime. The only hope is for new technology to bypass the regulatory road-blocks (autonomous road or air taxis), and both those solutions make it more attractive to live outside the city anyway.

    No way UN. “Western civilisation is no longer capable of building infrastructure”. Sit down and have rest. For decades almost every local body has neglected infrastructure maintenance and expansion. It has never been adjusted in the rates demands but continues to be a percentile increase every year.
    Auckland has raw sewage in the harbour not cow shit from farms.
    Greymouth had flooding in the areas that have been shielded by a massive flood bank along the river.
    Nelson had raw sewage in the sea at the popular Tahuna beach which most know is a back and front beach.
    Just 3 recent examples of neglected responsibility for infrastructure have impacted on peoples summer fun.
    Yes all these location have had varying levels of urban spread or growth levels but it has never been more expensive to offer NEW land at any of the places.
    That is about to balloon even further as some local bodies force homeowners to shoulder more of the burden with storm water retention. Do we chalk this up as another win or lose for homeowners?

  The summary of points from the report in the article are garbage.
  
  For example:
  1. Spending 160 hours per annum travelling to and from work. That means you spend 80 hours going to work and 80 hours going home from work.
  Given there are 220 to 230 working days a year
  that means the average travelled is 42 minutes per day to and from work.
  
  2. The average journey from Westgate to Nelson Street has increased 15 minutes during the period 2012 to 2016. Do any Westies want to tell me what was happening between Lincoln Road and St Lukes Road/MOTAT? Only major motorway widening, connections and the Waterview Tunnel, that is all! An aside from this one is that when Auckland Transport’s new western bus network went live last June, they found they had a timetable problem of 15 minutes, buses were turning up at Westgate 15 minutes earlier than planned – why because the road works had finished!!!
  
  Lake Road, these bunnies have obviously not spoken to AT’s Parking Department. Lake Road is full in the morning peak going to Devonport (particularly from Hauraki Corner, Belmont and Bayswater and the peak in the afternoon starts from 3pm in the afternoon going the other way. So, other than Taka Grammar and Belmont Intermediate, what is the problem – only the largest enterprise on the North Shore – the bloody naval base at Devonport and its workforce.
  
  The modelling in this exercise is bloody city council town planners and finance people, who want congestion charging. They just have two further problem to overcome, these being:
  1. most of the congestion is on Auckland’s Motorways, these being the domain of NZTA and not the council. Further, most of the congestion goes past the city, not into it; and
  2. If, you are going to get people to change their travel habits through congestion charging, you are meant to have an alternative that should provide an equivalent level of efficiency. However, Auckland’s Transport Planners have ensured that transport in Auckland is anything but efficient, when travelling by bus to the Wynyard Quarter/return can take 1 hour for a 22 minute journey by car, or 45 minutes from Manakau Road/Epsom to the city a journey of 15 minutes.
  
  In short, the press story is lazy journalism and the report is rubbish set to frighten Auckland City’s councillors., none of whom know much reality when it comes to transport.
  
  Finally. one of the people behind the rubbish report wrote in 2013 in an article justifying City Rail Link:
  “…without CRL, by 2020, Symonds Street will become gridlock, with traffic unable to move”.
  
  When I questioned him about, he acknowledged it was BS, but it was there to send (virtue signal) a message to the councillors (all of whom fell for it without questioning how CRL would solve that problem).
  
  So, on Monday, expect Auckland Councillors to get worried by the projections, and agree that something needs to be done, queue phase 2 of the report and eventually a contract to a bunch of consultants to implement congestion charging.
  
  I might add, congestion charging is not about getting rid of congestion, it is about raising money for the projects that Auckland will get, because the left and the Transport Bloggers have deemed Auckland needs and the usual trio of Twitford, JAG and Goofy will sign-off on.

  Harkman, the last daily newspaper printing in NZ could well be the Otago Daily Times, which is locally owned. Compared with other NZ media, it does a good job.
  
  Local owners are out and about in the communities where there customer-readers live, and thus are counter-weights on the Right to the natural “Leftism” of many journalists.

    Think of the Theory of Evolution, and especially its effect before the development of modern medicine and cheap clothing. Then, if populations do not move around, people near the poles will have white or yellow skins and those near the Equator will have black skins.

Well, well, well. According to a new study by the University of Auckland and published in Nature Communications, Tuvalu is not sinking – in fact its islands are growing in land mass and it should be OK for the next 100 years.

The tiny Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, thought to be under threat from sea level rise, has actually expanded in land area over the past 40 years and is likely to continue to be habitable a century from now, scientists say.

Research by the University of Auckland mapped shoreline change of each of Tuvalu’s 101 islands across its nine atolls over a 40-year period.

Mapping of island size and position shows that Tuvalu has experienced a net increase in land area of 2.9 per cent or 73.5ha. Overall 74 per cent of islands in the group – a total of 73 – are larger now than forty years ago.

  The National MP’s and staffers are pushing for a 5th March court hearing if Peters does not agree costs before that date. It makes a lie of his story last week that the Nats had disclosed more than expected on the affidavits sought Peters, to the extend that defamation proceedings would soon be issued.
  
  FWIW, I believe the leak came from within NZF. Peters was battling a tide of Jacindamania and a resurgent Bill English, and was being starved of media coverage, which is his lifeblood. He’d settled the issue with MSD, so what better way to get some publicity than by pretending to be on the receiving end of a National Party smear campaign?
  
  What makes this even more plausible is the timing. The story broke on the weekend of Bill English’s National Party campaign launch. I first heard of it on the radio as we were driving back from Auckland immediately after what was a very successful event in West Auckland. Why would National want Peters to be given a moral high ground to campaign from on the very weekend their election campaign went into overdrive?

    Since the whole matter was done and dusted history, with a departmental letter commending Winston for his prompt co-operation, before anything reached the media, and was an exemplary reaction when compared to Metiria Turei’s fraud, can anyone explain how it could disadvantaged Winston’s Election campaign, so why would National leak it.

Shortly before I came to NZ from South Africa, the big thing in the papers was some spat about NZ Post wanting to change the colour of post boxes.

We’re really lucky to live in a country where they have to dig this deep to find “news”.
