Earlier today the clock ticked over to 50,000,000 trees – so we are half way through the first year of regional tree planting mania.

We’ve seen lots of stories and discussions, and multiple millions of dollars “invested” – but we are yet to see tree number one !

It appears this Governments attacks on the farming sector are going to be as bad for them as it has been for the Oil & Gas sector.

Time for farmers to put together a political party to combat the nonsense! With 120,000 people directly employed in the sector and then all of those secondary but with an interest in the sector, the pool of potential voters is huge and at the least gives them a strong stage to push the good work that they are doing!

    National has distanced itself from rural/provincial – not just farmers.
    They have bought into the socialist/Green/elite urban rhetoric that land use for food, fibre and milk production (although not wine of course) is essentially bad on a commercial level for the environment.
    Our own provincial MP here said as much during the last election campaign. It was noted.

    Well, the proportion that the rural sector contributes to the rural sector has decreased from around 15% of GDP in 1960 to around 5% today so I can understand that the Nats have to have a more generalist approach.
    
    And a farmers party would poach a significant amount of Nats support but would give them a strong support partner and the ability to separate issues.

  Apparently, the CoL are saying the biggest threat to NZ agriculture is not urban sprawl, but the life style block. Their evidence Pukekohe. They are wanting councils to ban farmers breaking up and sub dividing their land.
  
  Do these dipsticks have a clue about what a lifestyle block is or how we use our land?
  
  For most farming families their land is their retirement planning, and then for the government to tell them how they can use their asset. There is a word for this, it is Communism.

Anybody still unsure about TVNZ’s direction, or complete and utter disconnect with / disdain for the public only need to switch on TV1 at seven pm weekdays

I’d say Hilary Barry and Anika Moa on Seven Sharp are about the shittest thing I’ve ever seen, and I have seen more shit than the Rosedale sewage treatment plant

TVNZ Modus Operandi –

Find the one person(s), completely at odds with NZ mainstream society and hire them. Controversial! = Viewers!

As if former Green Party candidate Hayley Holt wasn’t enough.

TVNZ has lost the plot. No wonder Curran wants to kill it.

  Just out of interest I went to see if I could see how Seven Sharp viewing figures compares for:
  – when Mike Hosking was there
  – after Mike left
  – when Moa joined
  
  But nothing, nada, nil, zip. At all!
  
  Isn’t it weird that there isn’t a way to find out how many of the public are viewing publicly funded TV? Of course I could do a frigging OIA and get the run around from the Minister for Secrecy’s office and I might find out eventually.
  
  But given other countries can just go help themselves online without having to buy OUR data from Nielsen’s – here’s what you can get in Britain!
  
  And once you decide what type of viewing figures you want, you can then refine your search down to just about any level of detail!
  
  I suspect the absence of any accessible information is because the numbers are now so low that it is a deliberate ploy to keep the generally hard-left TV personalities in their over-paid and under-performing jobs at our expense.
  
  The only info I could find on NZ TV viewership is for NZ On Air. But it appears to be only for the programming they fund. And looking at the paltry viewership – I’d say it’s long overdue for winding it down and saving well over $130 million wasted on giving pathetic media luvvies a living. Number 10 on their top viewing is garnering a massive 26,600 viewers – what a fucking joke.

    I’m usually cooking when it comes on so it takes 5 minutes to get near a remote. But where the hell is newsboy? He works 6 weeks, then takes 3 weeks off.

Seven Sharp has now turned into a very shitty programme and The Project is full of the coolest lefties you’re ever likely to see – their perception, not mine.   From what I understand National promised to build a four lane expressway with median barrier from Auckland clear through to Whangarei.
  This is clearly absurd and it should be no surprise to anyone that it’s been scrapped.
  There are two hazardous stretches of the road that need upgrading; the Dome Valley & the Brynderwyns and two bottlenecks at Warkworth & Wellsford.
  One would have thought improving those areas is going to cost megabucks to start with and take a long time due to availability of road building resources.

      Right CM so this major step towards helping Northland grow has been scrapped for a yet to be figured out diversion of funding yet to be determined will be spent in the regions. Judith Collins had Twyford on the ropes pressing him for some numbers and the best he could find was some perceived number of lives that will be saved. So far we have been told more about what they will not be doing than what they actually will do or even how much will be left after health gets a big boost in the budget.

        So do you want to explain why the government killed off extending the expressway to Whangarei on the deadliest piece of State Highway in the country, while preaching road safety?
        
        Please Don’t use the glib phrases of Twitford either, because despite meeting with Northland local council politicians last week, he demonstrated on RNZ yesterday that he is woefully ignorant on transport matters.

    By your ignorant comment, I take it you do not know SH1 between Warkworth & Whangarei very well, if at all?
    
    Your comment ranks alongside Twitford’s (yesterday on RNZ) with regards to being ignoant of what that highway needs. If you think I am exaggerating, drive the road and note:
    1. The condition of the highway Whangarei to Waipu (relative to traffic type & volume);
    2. The Brenderwyns (southern approach) & side to Kaiwaka;
    3. The road through Kaiwaka, plus the rail overbridge;
    4. The road through TeHana;
    5. The road through Wellsford;
    6. As for the Dome Valley – the need is for a complete new road – there are points that need complete realignment on the existing road. So, small projects as suggested will be poor value for money & a waste.

      I drive through there on a regular basis. The last time at Easter when we were bogged down in traffic returning through Warkworth on the way back on the Sunday.
      Some of your points I noted in my comment above.
      I realize there are other places where there is the inconvenience of SH1 passing through some small towns. This happens with our main highways through the length and breadth of the country so suck it up.
      
      I wouldn’t have a clue whether ‘Labour hates Northland’, Lance, any more than you do. Hate Northland, that is.

        MCos, I repeat you seem somewhat ignorant of SH1 north of Auckland.
        
        In 2021, SH1 will go around Warkworth, although this will not solve all the issues on Warkworth (Hill St will be one an AT problem).
        
        The Dome Valley stretch of SH1 is problematic, it is the deadliest piece of State Highway in the country, what Twitford has suggested is akin to pissing in the wind. There are 2 stretches of this piece of road where there is nowhere to go (in one narrow section there is a hill that comes to the road on the east side & the river & rail line to the west). To spend the sums the government is suggesting in these places is a waste of money, will fix very little & is therefore poor value for money.
        By the way, I specialise in the transport sector & live in the area, so I know the roads in the north very well.

        Given traffic volumes, yes a 4 lane expressway is warranted.
        
        Secondly, it was JAG(uar) who escalated road safety to top priority, the best way to reduce head on crashes is to have grade separated highways. As I have said, the current road is too narrow to achieve this in the most dangerous blackspots & you can hardly achieve that in the middle of Wellsford, TeHana & Kaiwaka.
        
        Reality is, JAG(uar) & her support/advisors have long wanted to kill off the RON’S & the expressways. This is their chance & they are using spurious reasoning with Twitford parroting any phrase he is given to repeat.
        
        Finally, do you think it is right that the people of Northland pay through the nose for Auckland to be blessed with transport projects that will provide dubious benefits? And do nothing to solve any of “The problems” that Auckland transport is suffering from?

  As the works will cost more than $5mill, the rest will come from the Regional Council.

  I watch the price of diesel rather than petrol cas. Last November I bought diesel for .947cpl – right now I’m paying around $1-30. So within 6 months the price of diesel has risen about 30%.

    But KiWombat you can expect more pain at the pump in the near future and going forward. Gone are the days when oil price/exchange rate was what determined the fuel pricing. Now there is the COL using excise as a cash cow while introducing region fuel taxes. While they would expect us to accept it is only in Auckland but the legislation leaves it open to other local bodies to it too. There will be few local bodies miss the chance of an additional cash stream like that with many also ready to line up their vanity projects suddenly being “affordable”.
    Watching the exchange rate closely as one does it is of some concern how much it has dropped in just one week as it rushes to match the previous “low” of late March.

    My father went to WWII. He left on a troop ship before the end of 1939 and returned in late 1945, with Mum. His older brother died in the skies over France & he had two other brothers in uniform.
    When he came back his Mum had aged so much he walked right passed her on the railway station platform.
    Dad had a lot of mates who’d gone off to the war & come back again, but some of them were not the same anymore. I remember when I was a kid he would get a phone call in the evening and he’d take off to calm someone down. The only help a lot of those guys got was from a whiskey bottle.
    I remember one guy who was the father of a friend of mine. He could only drive about 30mph on the open road.
    Another guy we went to see one evening when I was a bit older told us about his time in a Japanese POW camp. That was pretty overwhelming for a teenager back then.
    These blokes (& my grandmother) had wounds you can’t see . . . . . . .

      I was lucky, my father was keen to enlist in early 43 when he was 18, but his father refused permission. He then enlisted in early 45 as soon as he was 20, and signed up for the Fleet Air Arm. Went straight off to the UK to train and arrived in late April 1945. Spent 3 months as an Ordinary Seaman in training and was sent home.
      
      Lucky because FAA crew had an 80%+ casualty rate. Some of his contemporaries who were allowed to sign up in 43 never came back, but he himself had no personal trauma’s as he was never close to action.
      
      Best memory he had was when his whole class was drafted as extras in a film on the Normandy landings. They were to act the part of the soldiers, and had to charge out of the mock landing craft set up on a beach, up the beach and over the dunes…..then double back round the back of the cameras out on a temporary jetty back into the landing craft and do it again, and again, and again. He always said that it was very noticeable how the first “soldiers” out of the landing craft in the film looked much fitter and more enthusiastic than the last – some of the last lot out could barely trot up the beach.

      My family’s tale is similar, but becomes more complex when I think about my father in law. My side of the family is the usual mix of Kiwis (dad’s side, although he was too young for WII, his cousins went & his dad and an uncle were WWI) & POMES (mum’s side in WWI including her father). However, an under age uncle of mother drowned at sea & another uncle died of war injuries in the 1920s.
      
      However, what is complicating for my family at this time of year (As it was in November when we were in the UK), is that my son’s maternal grandfather is Austrian/German & was conscripted to fight in 1943 at the age of 16 for the Austrian Army. Long story short, my father in law was left with both physical & mental injuries from the war (which have remained with him) & as with allied soldiers who returned from war, he just had to get on with his life. To this day in Germany & Austria there is very little recognition given to those who served their countries in WWI or WWII, but these men did return with the scars of war.
      Consequently, my father in law (& his family) have battled with his alcoholism for most of his adult life.
      
      The point is, I believe that while it is important that we remember what the allied youth of yesterday sacrificed and went through, it is important for us to remember that much has changed in 70 years and we should also remember that the youth of other countries made sacrifices irrespective of whether they supported the cause for which they were fighting or not.

    I realize that shell shock, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental illness are “the wounds you cannot see,” but I would like the RSA to be more clear and state something along the line of “mental injuries from war”.
    
    This “wounds you cannot see” does not link the “wounds” to the source (war).
    
    It’s like the RSA’s “lest we forget.” The only problem is that the younger generation have never known the thing that should not be forgotten.

I heard a croaky old woman hoping to be called President Clark in the new New Zealand Republic this morning.
She had obviously told Cindy that we must become a Republic soon, but the impression from London we are told from there is that there will be no Republic soon.
Why hasn’t Cindy done as she was told by Clark ?
There will be ructions when she gets back as it was understood she was going to tell the Queen whatever.
Is there any connection with the accepted fact that a new Treaty to be Waitangi TWO has been written by experts, and a group of Wellington geriatric lawyers, at Auckland Maori University especially for this purpose.
To become a Republic the existing farce will have to be nullified.
Will that mean that all settlements will have to be revisited in today’s Te Reo and English as translated by the experts ?

I think I have worked out what the Jacinda Factor is.

It certainly is not the normal stuff you would hope for: competence, leadership, vision etc.

Instead it would seem she (and Labour as a whole) are using the chick-flick (aka romantic comedy) playbook.

You know what I’m talking about. Slightly geeky character who is a complete mess, faces a few life challenges and eventually achieves a slightly normal life.

The mundane is repainted as success. This is not a superhero movie with huge problems (global financial crisis etc) that need to be overcome by massively competent people.

Basically Jacinda is Bridget Jones. It’s all the feelz. People root for Bridget Jones on a purely emotional level, not due to her being at all competent in anything she does.

If you stopped a Bridget Jones movie halfway through and asked people if they would vote for Bridget Jones or Superman, they’d probably give Bridget their support.

That’s all fine, except that chick-flicks are escapist fantasy. They should not be used as a basis for running a country.

Sidenote: Labour are something along the lines of Revenge of the Nerds meets Meatballs. A fantasy in which a bunch of losers that manage to defy the odds and overcome their problems. Heck, why not give them a go at running the country!

Long may this continue though as fimilarity tends to breed contempt and we need that in 3 years when they once again roll out the isn’t our PM wonderful spin to attract the lady voters.
Speaking of which I would like my female counterparts who want to vote for her because of lady bits to please just sit out the next election.

    But I did notice she’s trotted out a new pair of shoes on this trip. I have spotted her wearing those ghastly things with a thick strap which go around the ankle. Also think I spotted some new boots in France – or maybe they were just the new shoes. Whichever way you look at her – her choice of clothing is unremarkable. I think her colour choices are a wee bit on the dowdy side. For someone with her complexion and hair colour (and we know that her hair is dyed black to within an inch of its life) she would be well-suited to clear, brighter colours rather than the mustard which is a hard colour to wear. Oh well, I’m not her wardrobe mistress, but I could do a darn sight better than the current advice she’s getting.

        I assume that you don’t agree with the following 2 propositions:
        
        1. The government should legislate for affordable housing (using your definition – 3 x household income). That clearly wouldn’t work as the same house would have a different price depending on household income.
        2. The government should regulate banks (no loans above 3 x household income). On current market trends, that’d exclude many people from the housing market.
        
        So what’s your solution?
        
        A market-based solution talks about freeing up supply (eg local government zoning restrictions) to accommodate demand. But the wheels of local government turn slowly, and I can’t see how we move from a ratio of 8.2 to 3 in the medium-term, let alone the short-term.

        From the Dem Survey numbers detached housing should be at or below 3.9 times household incomes; fringe new starter housing 2.5 times; apartments / townhouses 2.0 times and fringe manufactured housing packages about 1.5 times.

As you can probably tell from the title there is a big “but” in the title. The content of the article isn’t much better, and there are plenty of comments in the comment section where people seem to agree with “do not need” argument.

How about if we let the market decide? If people want it, they will want it. If they don’t, if will fail.

On the other hand, the “do not need” argument is a slippery slope argument. What humans need, in the final analysis is very little. You don’t need that house, car, shoes etc. If you start down this path of banning things based on “need” there is almost no limit to what can be removed from your life, should “need” be the defining characteristic.

If an ascetic in charge, you’re utterly screwed. He will reduce everything down to his level of need.

While on the subject, the sight of Andrew Little at Pike River yesterday was sickening. Is there any level that man will not stoop to ? Given he was in large part responsible, in his union role, for the mine being deemed safe to begin with, I hope he is kept awake at night by the knowledge of his part in that tragedy. That he now seeks to make political capital from it is contemptible, even for a politician.

  But entering Pike River is about the only thing I agree with in regard to the CoL.
  
  It should have been done at the time. It should have done many times since. It doesn’t matter what the various arguments are – it was never going to go away. It’s a festering sore in NZ’s history where the rescue of 29 men by willing professionals was forbidden, supposedly because of Health & Safety legislation (of all things); the decision made by Police with no expertise in either mines or rescue.
  
  If they have people willing to go into the mine, the sooner it’s carried out and over with, the better for everyone. The photo op, however, was gratuitous spin. Just do it.

    Ann Glen Eden – I totally agree with you about Pike River. To me the whole rescue was botched. Why did they have no team ready to go in the case of an explosion? Why spend precious hours gathering together a team of experts that in their expertise decided to do nothing?
    
    But look the simple fact of the matter is that for the widows and family of these men this issue will not go away until their loved ones remains are retrieved and given a proper burial.

        Ann Glen Eden – thanks for the update on that. One of my abiding memories of the Pike River disaster was the police commanding officer who obviously had no idea and was the very definition of the “possum caught in the headlights”.
        
        The police should never have been put in charge of something they know nothing about. And the mining company should have been allowed to have mounted a rescue mission straightaway.
        
        That no rescue mission was mounted to me is disgraceful. And I shall add, because I know I have to add this every time, that if my son was in there I would have volunteered to have gone in.

The bodies have decayed by now and what purpose would it be serving to retrieve bones and dust. They have had endless ceremonies, an elaborate memorial has been placed near their tomb, they have had huge payouts. To be honest I am utterly sick of their bleating. Lots of people lose loved ones and never find them, think the malaysian airlines crash. At least the Pike River families know exactly where they are.         You assume (and as pointed out, you have a weakness for that), in your rhetorical question that there is only one opposite of love. “Indifference” will also suffice as the opposite of love in some contexts. And “indifference” is not “hate”.
        
        You also assume (see how this is a habit of yours?) in your rhetorical question that Jones implied that because he thought Folau’s statements were “without love”, that he meant that it was in fact the opposite. Again, another non sequitur…sorry, gotta keep it simple for you, another logical non sequential. Just because something is absent, does not mean its mirror opposite is present. For example, the opposite of black is white, but just because you describe something as non-black, doesn’t automatically mean it is white.
        
        Hence, if you say that something someone said/tweeted lacks love, it does not automatically imply or mean that it is hateful. Indeed, in context, and as mentioned before, as Jones described Folau as a good guy, we have good reason to surmise Jones did not consider what was tweeted hateful.
        
        Hence, Jones intent was not to “set him right” on the matter of hate speech.

        I believe it was a journalist, looking for a story. As they usually are when they ask celebrities and sports stars questions, especially leading ones.
        
        And that’s something of which Folau is well aware, and has received considerable media training commensurate with his considerable income. Hence, when it suits him, Folau chooses to avoid questions such as “do you think your Wallaby Michael Cheika is a dickhead?”
        
        So I’m not buying the line of Brendan McNeill that Folau is some sort of martyr or victim in this. He should have been well aware of the potential criticism, contempts and ridicule (which are not the same as persecution!) and financial penalties for potentially harming Rugby Australia’s commercial interests when he tweeted.
        
        Free speech is not without potential consequences. And again, as those consequences take place in the court of public opinion, they don’t have to be reasonable, fair, consistent or proportionate.

The other thing to add to hits to rural areas is that banks ( Aussie owned) are closing branches or cutting hours of service. They expect people to do internet banking but have not checked to see if a) people have access to computers and b) if there is internet coverage or cellphone coverage in an area.

i suppose Shane ‘ Champion of the Regions’ will read this and have a go at the banks next to try and redeem himself

Israel Folau might well be a very simple minded god botherer but that should not deny him the same rights as the scum from the left.
When you think about this a bit it is clear that Folau is doing exactly the same type of thing that the Marvelly sheila and that Mau sheila do. Folau is virtue signalling. He is signalling his virtue to his fellow deluded followers of the sky fairy.
If it is acceptable, and, indeed fashionable for the left to virtue signal then it should be just as acceptable and fashionable for other groups to do the same thing.

    From what I just read, it looks like diplomats’ families share their immunity. Makes sense, although open to abuse. Same might apply to visiting dignitaries and their families.
    
    Under article 37 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, this immunity extends to family members under the following situations:
    1. The members of the family of a diplomatic agent forming part of his household shall, if they are not nationals of the receiving State, enjoy the privileges and immunities specified in articles 29 to 36.

    For a diplomat being posted overseas the protection applies not just to the person being posted but to their family, even though they are not the people working at the Embassy. If not, a foreign government while unable to touch the diplomat could hassle their family. I assume that PMs and Ministers travelling overseas are accorded the same kind of protection and it makes sense to apply that coverage to their partner.

        It is well documented that most serial killers practised on animals before moving on to humans.
        Not so well documented (probably so as not to upset meat-eaters), is that many murderers and serial killers were previously employed as slaughtermen (or women, in the psycho Australian Katherine Knight’s case.)
        Google it, and you’ll find out yourself how a career in killing animals desensitizes people and leads to violent behaviour and even murder.

        He believes that common lingo/ pidgin English/whatever still counts and should be acceptable.

  If the woman had been killed by a lion, you would not be applying the same level of morality. You would not call the lion a sadist or a perp. Nor would you add the emotive phrases: defenceless woman, mother, etc.
  
  You are holding this man to a higher standard than you would a lion. Therefore, by that very action you are agreeing that a lion is a lesser specie.

    BTW, I commend you for killing your food yourself, rather than expecting them to wait in line for the executioner.

        Naturally our first loyalty should be to our own species, though it doesn’t necessarily mean that other species are all lower than us.

        Even one of my favourite authors Steven Pinker made me very cross by referring to “meat hunger”.
        If you were raised from birth to be vegetarian I’m sure you would never experience “meat hunger”.
        (Meat revulsion would be more like it.)
        I’m not one of these fanatics overseas who reckon animals should be accorded “rights”, etc.
        I just don’t think any sentient being should be dragged from its mum to be killed at a few days old, or have to stand in line to be killed.
        If we’re such a superior species, shouldn’t we act like it and try our best to prevent suffering to individuals whose only fault was to be born into another animal species?
        That said, the meat industry in western nations is infinitely superior to that in non-western countries, where they sink as low as to torture and kill man’s best friend and other companion animals.

  There was no point in dropping it in the Hudson.
  The Hudson crash was due to the plane losing all power at take off after swallowing a flock of birds. No height, gravity, even getting a neat splash in the Hudson was a challenge.
  
  In this case the plane was still flying (powered and everything), though it was certainly one for the books.
  
  Thanks for the travel tip. Being quite tall, I try to fly aisle anyway as I can then unroll my legs properly. Sleep is a bit harder as the trolly-dollies seem to play a game called “how many shins can we ding before someone swears at us”.

  AR5 (2013) is a distinct improvement over previous IPCC reports.
  They’ve acknowledged uncertainty about aspects of the ‘science’ and also provided observational data to clear up a few things.
  Extreme weather events being one. Covered in Chapter 2, what the IPCC state is a bit different to some of the alarmist claims being made.
  It’s so bad one could say that people like Shaw et al are the science deniers.
  Some of the claims made even just a decade ago now look completely ridiculous.

I have just returned from dealings with our much maligned health system left in such terrible disarray after nine years of mismanagement under Tony Ryall and Jonathan Coleman.

For a total cost of just $43 I received a very comprehensive blood test last week, a full health check today along with flu and shingles shots. Another $20 covered my medication for three months.

‘Dr’ Clarke can take none of the credit for our very fine GP system and grassroots medical care.

  To support GazzaW’s comments I’ve had several minor issues attended to under the public health system over the past couple of years and cannot fault them.
  They usually say ‘we’ll attend to you within four months’ and invariably you’re under the knife within half of that.

I think this has broader implications. If we review history and decide that someone was a bad person, and that something named after that bad person should be called something else, where does historical revisionism start and end?

        My cow’s have all succumbed to Mycoplasma bovis and my pigs have eaten both mine and the neighbours cats but apart from that Nostra everything’s tickity boo! 🙂

  I don’t believe it!
  This silly woman is the author of her own situation.
  She should either get a reverse mortgage to pay back her rates or use the money left over from the sale of her home to buy a unit.
  And when she does, let’s hope she does something useful to get attention from here on.
