Today feels a bit like the Berlin wall coming down, a moment I’ll never forget.

Korean War is over. Seems too good to be true but things change in the world.

Trump did this. Someone buy that man a Speights, because he sure won’t ever get a Nobel Peace Prize.

The old adage: ‘Pay no mind to what a politician says. Pay heed to what they do’ has never been more appropriate.

  The images from the DMZ have been amazing to see and there now appear to be grounds for hope for an end to the war and a nuclear arms control regime. But great risks remain. Trump has got this far by keeping the North Koreans and China off balance; he should keep the pressure on. The tricky bit may well be handling South Korean expectations.

        This a is first, but very important step. The South Korean leader credited President Trump for the achievement. President Trump credited President Xi for his and China’s help. So clearly these three guys see it as a team effort and I’m sure there were others helping in the background, including Putin.

    NHK reports that the Korean leaders have signed a joint declaration of their intent to eliminate nuclear weapons from the peninsula; however, there have been no announcements of specific steps.
    
    I think that Prime Minister Abe is hoping that President Trump will do Japan’s heavy lifting when Trump (maybe) meets Kim in June.
    
    In the meantime, the Japanese are talking to the Russians in Moscow.

  The Korean War is not yet over.
  Thus far there have been meetings between North Korea & Pompeo and South & North Korea. At the latter meeting there was moves towards signing a peace treaty with the hope expressed that this might be accomplished before year’s end.
  Interestingly South Korea wasn’t even a signatory to the ceasefire.
  In the meantime the nuclear weapons & crushing embargoes remain.
  God only knows what will happen when Trump gets involved with the process. For once South Korea has a conciliatory president in Moon Jae-in, but a lot of people don’t trust them.
  In the meantime Japan, which has a very spotty history with the Koreas, seems to be shunted off to the sidelines.
  Let’s not forget that Abe & Kim Jung Un have a long personal and antagonist family history.

  I would interpret Helen Clark’s comment as meaning that there must be a better way of dealing with this situation than forcibly selling her home so she is a few hundred thousand dollars out of pocket but some hard nosed rhino skinned buyer makes a few hundred thousand windfall.
  There is a better way in the context of the current legislation. Since it seems she is ‘not all there’, simply leave her in the house and allow rates penalties to accumulate until she or executors sell the house. The Council will not be out of pocket since the accumulated penalties would be greater than the accumulated interest on borrowed money. No significant precedent would be set.
  Possibly for the future the rating legislation could be amended to allow the Court to appoint a trustee or receiver in such cases who can arrange to borrow against the property to pay the rates. This is virtually the situation with respect to unpaid rates on a mortgaged property – the mortgagee is required to pay the outstanding rates and these will be added to the loan.

    If people can’t pay their rates how will they pay the increased mortgage which will be previous rates, current rates and interest. Under your scenario the person will live in the house until the mortgage reaches equity and then it will be sold and they lose everything. In other words rent plus rates plus interest.

      There are three scenarios:
      1. Property already mortgaged. Mortgage agreements give the mortgagee various powers to protect the value of the security such as the power to pay unpaid rates and add it to the loan. The Rating Act affirms this by requiring a lender to pay unpaid rates when demanded by a Council. Such accumulated rates could cause the lender to want to foreclose but that is the lender’s problem, not the Council’s problem. In such a situation there is likely to be far more serious problems than rates arrears such as the borrower not meeting mortgage repayments.
      2. Unmortgaged but abandoned property – where owner or successors cannot be tracked. A rating sale would be the most appropriate option with the Public Trustee holding the proceeds less rates and expenses. If net proceeds not claimed within six years or whatever then Public Trustee would pay the ‘unclaimed’ proceeds to IRD to be held in the unclaimed monies account.
      3. Unmortgaged property with traceable owner (eg Penny Bright’s situation). It would be extremely unlikely that unpaid rates and accumulated penalties would exceed property value (except for ghost town situations or natural disasters). Hence my idea that the Act should be amended so the Court can appoint a receiver or trustee who can borrow against the property to pay outstanding rates. If the property is tenanted the receiver can ‘receive’ whatever portion of the rent is needed to pay rates – either via the property management firm or even from the tenants. If need be the receiver or trustee might have to sell up, but this would be at arm’s length from the Council. Hence this effectively foils any attempted ‘rates strikes’.

    A reform of prostitution law was needed in any case. In particular, the police using presence of condoms as evidence that a place was a brothel was really grotesque – the response was not to keep condoms here hence unprotected casual sex with all its potential health issues. The reform did not legalise consensual sex with underage people, the ‘other’ person still faces a very serious criminal charge for having such sex.

      Correct, Peter. The Prostitutes Collective back in the 80s was very strong on women’s rights but certainly never wanted underage girls to prostitute themselves.
      
      I was involved in student support on various socially liberal issues (gay rights, feminist issues).

  Penny Bright by her latest legal round has shown that she is an activist and will milk any situation for what she can get out of it. She gives the fingers to other ratepayers and expects a free ride. She has obvious money to fund the filing fees of her Court actions.
  
  Penny now has to take the consequences of ignorant self will.
  She is not a pet to be indulged and HC’s reported promotion of PB would be despicable. We don’t have one law for PB and one for the rest. Her illness, if any may be a misfortune, but her willful pursuit against common sense cannot be graced by privilege.
  
  PB will still have more money left over than many people. The law should be promptly executed to give all the ratepayers a fair go.

        Council would not have if it just sat back and waited (I am not blaming them for not doing this). In retrospect this would have been the best solution. Just apply some pressure – send a rates demand showing the accumulated amount each month and then inform the credit score agencies. Then just sit back in the knowledge it will cost the non-ratepayer, but not the Council in due course.
        A mechanism is needed in the Act to protect Penny and that woman from Manurewa who lost her house from their idiocy – this is what Helen Clark was alluding to.

      So are you suggesting that the Auckland CC has not investigated every possible course of action available to it in this case of a maverick, attention seeking activist protecting her position?
      ACC might well be able to do as you suggest and just bide it’s time to collect what’s owing in the end.
      But please think of the smaller councils access to funding via rates.
      Some of them can’t wait 20 years to collect especially if enough ratepayers in a small town do what Ms Bright has done. They will have to borrow from somewhere else to fund their works and services.

        Yes I am. The ‘do nothing’ action will deny her the attention she is so badly seeking.
        The ‘do nothing’ action is just as applicable to smaller councils. Agreed they will have to borrow from somewhere else to fund works and services, but the compounded penalties on unpaid rates would easily cover the cost of that borrowing. Once most delinquent ratepayers fail to get the attention they are seeking, they will cough up when they realise a hole is being burnt in their pockets. Only a minority of ratepayers can try this on anyway – the ones with mortgages cannot as the Council will simply collect the unpaid rates from the lender. My idea of the Rates Act allowing for a court to place the property in the hands of a trustee or receiver who can borrow against the property to pay the rates would be another useful mechanism to deal with attention seekers.
        Years ago an attention seeking ratepayer tried to stir a council by paying rates one penny short. The Town Clerk saw what was coming, reached in his pocket for one penny and handed it to the rates clerk. The joke was then on the delinquent ratepayer.

        I have had a recent epiphany on this. Chucking a somewhat mentally disturbed person (but not sufficiently disturbed as to warrant confinement under the Mental Health Act) out of her house with ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ is not the way to go in a humane society. I have an American friend staying with me for a few days. The last time he was here was 3 years ago. At the time he perceived how proud New Zealanders were of this country and believed it had to do with the presence of John Key and his more than capable government. A government which was in the business of uplifting New Zealanders aspirations and the country’s presence world-wide. I didn’t realise until he said this how much I miss the Key government. Who could possibly have imagined how far we have fallen? All I can plead for is the rapid removal of the current (ahem) administration. If we don’t rid ourselves of these fools our well-being and spirit may be damaged for generations. (I am a bit gloomy today and suspect I am far from being alone in this.)

Time for some real gender equity in Hollywood movies

Now that it’s virtually impossible to go the movies because of the wall-to-wall preaching and virtue-signalling from major movie studios as they all try like crazy to prove that they’re not Harvey Weinstein.

Star Wars is dead to me now after that strange little fat oriental girl Rose Tico was injected in a massive plot non sequiter as Finn’s new love interest and it turns out that Princess Leia was able to transcend death and had a secret ability to create force fields – all just to make us ignorant movie goes understand that “Women can do anything!. Right” Also the “all men are just brainless tank brains” role for the previous hero X wing pilot Poe didn’t help with driving down the Rotten Tomatoes Audience rating to a franchise low of 47%.

We now have a female Dr Who. There’s talk of a female Bond (as well of course as a black Bond).

So I reckon it’s time that some real gender equity.

How about a male reboot of:
– Ridley in Alien
– Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs
– Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz
– Maria in the Sound of Music
– Sex in the City – focussed on four 30 something professional males making their way in the misandryist world of New York

Given how Roseanne is blowing up ratings in the US, this could be the answer to the box office doldrums assailing Harveywood right now.

    The Last Jedi was appalling, it broke the Star Wars universe, rendering all previous movies meaningless (spoilers follow, but really no-one should care considering how bad it is) – who needs long tortured plots about stealing plans and flying fighters against Death Stars when you can just run a cruiser into your overpowered enemy in hyperdrive anytime you feel like it. And who needs years of Jedi training when a total newbie can show up and immediately beat the best with no training, or a non-Jedi Leia can fly around like Superman. And how can a Jedi ever be trapped when they can astrally project themselves across the Galaxy to summon help. Silly storyline regarding female commander not telling her subordinates her plan – leading to their mutiny at her stupid actions only painted her as an idiot rather than as some great leader smarter than the dumb men she was leading. Also pointless side stories that do nothing for overall story, other than to add a half hour of screen time for more SJW talking points. Disney, partly with their SJW agenda, partly through insultingly stupid writing, have taken a great steaming shit on a fanbase that has followed them for 40 years, and many won’t be back.
    
    All shows how the movie advertising business works too, when critics give 90%+ average rating (thank you for your business Disney) and audiences 40% (and falling)

ACT didn’t work, NZF has proved where its ‘loyalties’ lie (to Winnie and only to Winnie) and the Conservatives destroyed themselves.

So what is left?

At this stage, not much. Venezuala is becoming a distinct possibility, yet the Nats (who COULD turn the whole thing around if they actually came out with policies that counter the current mayhem) are metaphorically sitting and knitting and talking amongst themselves (‘Asleep at the wheel if you will’)

I think after a long sleepless night how the socialists have come to populate the ranks of the enviro-loons to the vast extent they do. To be a socialist you need to have zero appreciation of the costs of living, in fact, the costs of everything. Hence socialists claim all things must be free…education, health care etc. Now, the intellectually challenged socialist fails to understand that someone is obligated to pay for their “free” things. The people who do so do not feature in the landscape of what passes for a socialist’s brain (let alone conscience.) This means the socialist cannot distinguish between the contributions made to society by those who pay and some species of rat/bat/bird etc.. and that a standing tree deep within the gorges and hills of NZ is of minimal fiscal value to society. Hence, the dreamy and deluded socialist can claim that everything is of equal value and justify this non-thinking by painting pictures of enviro-armageddon and future squalor. The problem with this non-thinking is that socialists are and shall remain the present squalor living off those who genuinely contribute. So therefore Labour (being a pack of envy ridden do-nothings) = Greens (being a pack of deluded and envy ridden do-nothings!)

    I understand that not living in Canterbury means you rely on the MSM which in other respects you largely distrust. What Christchurch really wanted was Insurers and EQC to do the job properly in fairy and quickly repairing or compensating and in that they have failed miserably hence the ongoing saga of housing related issues. Should Wellington have a major quake or Auckland suffer a volcanic event then Canterbury will do the same for those citizens as they did for Christchurch which exceeds that delivered by our private and public sector bureaucrats

      Biggest failure in the Christchurch was that their local Insurance Company -AMI was run by incompetent idiots who busted the company and then relied on the Government (read Taxpayers of NZ) to bail them out.
      Many of these people who were insured with AMI bought a cheap pup, now they blame everybody else for them doing so.
      Should the Government (read Taxpayers) bailed them out, like South Canterbury Finance.- raises other questions.

Just because it hasn’t happened in the MMP environment doesn’t mean it won’t. We’ve only had MMP for a couple of decades, that’s hardly any time at all.

Wait till kiwis see the gas price skyrocket, interest rates move, butter at 8 or 9 bucks in Pak N Save etc.

Not to mention not get all those pay rises they were expecting and nothing changing with homeless people in cars etc.

The Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee released its report
today on a briefing in which the committee was inadvertently misled by RNZ chairman Richard Griffin and chief executive Paul Thompson about a meeting between Curran and Hirschfeld last December. A minority report by the five National Party members of the select committee said questions remained unanswered regarding the appropriateness of communications initiated by Curran, with Hirschfeld and Griffin.

So 4 Labour MPs (Paul Eagle, Tamati Coffey, Michael Wood and Deborah Russell) and 1 Green MP (Gareth Hughes) found that everything was tickety-boo. Thank goodness all is well in our democracy!

  Well those Labour wankers didn’t find everything was tickety-boo, as per the NZH and Stuff recordings of the SC, they appeared to spend the entire time trying to discredit RNZ Chairman Richard Griffin by questioning his background in order to smear him as as a National Party stooge and didn’t seem to ask any questions relating to Curran’s antics – only Melissa Lee appeared to do that.

    If it was a National Party Minister who had held a questionable, secret meeting with a senior employee of o government entity, Gareth Hughes would be screaming from the rooftops about corruption and conflicts of interest. So how have the Labour MP’s in the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee managed to persuade him to veto the request for Clare Curran to appear and explain herself?
    
    I can understand Labour MP’s sticking up for the colleague (even though I don’t agree with it), and to be fair Messrs Wood, Eagle and Coffey and Ms Russell are pretty low on Labour’s foodchain, so they do what they are instructed from above.   I must correct you – They are forcing Alfie Evans to die. It isn’t allowing, they are preventing Alfie from living, despite that not costing the British health system anything. I support Euthanasia as per ACT’s bill, however this is state forced euthanasia, something I thought Europe stopped since the early 1940’s.
  
  I think we should think about cases like this when condemning Russia’s actions against the UK. The UK has become a speech suppressing, state run murdering country that deserves no respect or support.

This is the same “logic” as pushing for high rates for feed in tariffs, for the excess power off solar panels on house roofs —subsidies !!

Christchurch cycle trougher “incredibly disappointed” that they didn’t get nearly half a million bucks more to park their shitty bikes all over the place.

The two and a half year pilot (32 bikes) provided 20,000 rides, charging $4 per ride + $50k in sponsorship, so that’s $6.50 per ride.

20,000 rides using 32 bikes over 2.5 years means each bike was ridden less than 5 times a week.

Each shitty bike earned $4k.

Terrible bikes, terrible service but it is only ratepayer money so who cares?

      I meant Willis St but autocorrect took control while I was throwing my dessert spoon at the dog. The mongrel snuck up and stole the last of my salmon (wild not farmed) while I was opening my beer. He better sleep with one eye open lest he gets fed to the coyotes.
      Highlight of my hi-jinks (autocorrect had that as hi-kinks) was ditching prom night and drinking on the St George bartender’s tab all evening on my prom dress and bailing on him and ditching him on top of the Terrace Tunnel.

NZ ANTI-CORRUPTION WHISTLE-BLOWER Penny Bright UPDATE.

I have completed all legal paperwork required by the Judge, and served copies on Auckland Council.

Compared with Auckland Council, with its $2 BILLION annual budget, 12,000 employees and legal department, it is just me, a ‘lay litigant’ with no previous experience in injunctions or judicial reviews – but I’m doing my best.

I have had some help – but it’s still a lot of work and I’m not working to full capacity because I’m not well.

LEGAL DEVELOPMENTS:

Auckland Council have filed a Notice of Opposition and supporting Affidavit to my Interim Injunction Application.

The hearing date for the Interim Injunction has yet to be set.

I have until Wednesday 2 May to file further submissions and Auckland Council have until Monday 7 May to respond.

The hearing date will be set as soon as possible after that.

Next week I expect to receive the prognosis of my biopsy for suspected ovarian cancer.

So – I need all this stress and legal paperwork pressure at this time like I need another hole in the head.

My stomach is starting to swell again and I feel really tired.

On the ‘bright’ side – who has come out publicly and strongly in opposition to the forced sale of my house, is former NZ Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark.

I have publicly thanked Helen Clark for her support at this time.

This support from Helen Clark has received significant publicity.

I look forward to current MPs ‘stepping up to the plate’ and stating their public opposition to the forced rating sale of my freehold home.

Especially when all Auckland Council needed to do – but did not – was to secure the rates debt with a Charging Order over my property.

  Sure, the Council could secure your debt with a charging order.Should they do that with everyone who doesn’t want to pay their rates? Could become a very popular option.
  I guess it’s fortunate that you ~~are unemployable~~ don’t pay taxes, so you don’t have to find out whether IRD would be happy to put it all on tick as well.

The Auckland city mission says:
The mission’s team leader for fundraising Alexis Sawyers, said there had been a 25 percent increase in demand for food parcels compared to the same time last year.
“This time last year we were averaging between 750 and 800 food parcels given out each month. This year we’ve given out over 1000 for January, February and March and this last month we gave out 1150.”
