‘Vance has quit the national broadcaster while Bradford has asked for reassignment to Auckland after they both missed out.’

“Things have been tense in Wellington since Jessica took over from Corin Dann last month,” a source told Spy.

“Other reporters have noticed that Andrea and Katie have been visibly put out and have not responded well to Jessica’s new role. They both wanted the job and don’t seem to have fallen in line to help make a strong team.”

My summary: Vance and Bradford’s respective behaviours post decision illustrates why they didn’t get the job.

  I first thought “who cares” when I read this. The TVNZ “news” team is a joke which appears to lack anything approaching an ability to investigate, to enquire, to be balanced and of course simply to report. This lot have a prescribed agenda and perhaps we’d all be better off without them. I haven’t watched TV news for many years. I have lost nothing from this decision.

    Interesting that this subject has arisen – an old now retired former member of the Press Gallery with whom I stay in regular contact since my many years in Wellington has postulated the following and an interesting problem that appears to have arisen.
    Many in the Gallery are getting tired of being told what to say and do, except e young bimbos trying to make a name for them selves.
    It appears that the Labour Party particularly are concerned that what they expected from National has not arisen. They fully expected National to be screaming and jumping up and down against the COLL, but they are not which does not give them the opportunity to obfuscate against the marauding National members.
    If this tactic were to work then the COLL could hide behind the adverse publicity wrought by the Press Gallery.
    But what has happened is that the COLL – particularly Labour have created enough SNAFU of their own where by National does not to have to shit stir at the present time.
    The Greens apparently are way ahead with the bimbos in everything.
    They are the winner “test” Labour and will continue to so far it is believed.
    Whether Labour can force the Press Gallery to do their wishes remains to be seen. Lets face it they got what they wanted out of the last election a left wing Government thanks to Peters who is universally disliked in Parliament – a rude arrogant prick was mentioned.

  The fact the MSM don’t do any research is borne out by the TV1 news article last night with Twyford trumpeting the first Kiwibild houses.
  With the long consenting process, and from what I understand was reasonable ground remediation and infrastructure works, it seems these are the houses that were a National Party initiative and undertaking.
  All Twyford has done is subsidized the developer, stapled a Kiwibuild sticker on them, and claimed them as his.
  When is a real journalist going to call this muppet out – The degree of dishonesty is sickening.

  Congratulations to Jessica Mutch – she has reported reasonably fairly over the years (without prejudices showing) and fairly respectably. She will make a fine Political Editor.
  
  Good riddance to the other two openly prejudiced lefties though – Vance was never a good fit for TV news reporting (grating accent, style over substance etc).
  
  And the damned awful Katie Bradford. How on earth she got the job in the first place is unbelievable – I cannot see how she could have beat other talented aspiring journalists, to land a coveted political reporting role.
  
  She was everything a TV reporter shouldn’t be – trashy “Lynn of Tawa” idiotic accent, bizarre persona (bouncing around with overzealous glee), let alone nevermind being tainted by her upbringing affecting her political reporting and angles she used. 7-Sharp would have been more fitting for her I would have thought.

      It depends very much on the scale of the event. Fortunately, we appear to be much closer to the technical ability for early detection and diversion of an asteroid strike than we are in dealing with anthropogenic global warming.
      Just because an asteroid strike would be more catastrophic for humanity that large temperature increases and fast rising sea-level does not mean that the second threat needs to be ignored to concentrate on the first.

  That article is stupid. The best guide to impacts is history. The earth gets hit by 100 metres diameter objects about once every century. If one such object hit a populated centre, it would be catastrophic, but it would not have global effects.
  
  Impacts with potentially global impacts that would threaten humanity occur at intervals of tens or hundreds of thousands of years. The article implies that such frequency has changed and there is am imminent threat. I would like to see the evidence.

      The glaciers might still be there but they are disappearing fast. Tasman glacier will be gone totally in the next 10 years. Franz Joseph will be practically gone in the same time frame.

  While an asteroid collision is afar more dangerous possibility than man made global warming.I believe our greatest danger especially for NZ is a Solar Electromagnetic pulse striking even a glancing blow to our planet as a result of both the weakening of the earth and the sun’s magneticshields and the increasing movement of the Magnetic North and South Poles towards each other due to the approaching Grand Solar Minima.

    It has to be more dangerous because it’s a real possibility. Man made Global warming is a myth, at least the man made bit is. Warming may be happening, but only a tiny fraction could be blamed on humans. Now I know the usual alarmists are going to get all uppity about this and call me a fool, and question my academic credentials, so to all of you, FUCK OFF.     Cannot dispute that Alex. Awful “spectacle”.
    But there seems to be several problems with the Blues
    1. Talent identification
    2. Coaching at lower levels
    3. Conditioning
    4. Media ignorance
    
    The conditioning is a real problem that seems to have grown from issues 1 & 2 – witness the pot-bellied tubs of lard on display as Blues props. An absolute disgrace. Folk like Brown, Dowd, Drake and McDowell for example, would have buried heads in hands.
    
    Media ignorance is of growing concern. It seems that no matter what the results the old saying that Cantabrians see Red from one eye and Black from the other, has been adopted by the Auckland cadre of uninformed scribblers. (Mind, Stuff and its Canterbury mob are just as bad.) Not a single T P McLean among them. Their pro-Auckland and pro- Crusaders bias is palpable.
    It is time the media took a close look at results to date and the competition standings ladders….. not one where teams have played more games are said to be “leading” the table.

      What makes me wonder is the Ioane brothers are lauded and are called the next big thing in Auckland rugby.
      But they didn’t stand out at all.
      Swamped by a limited but enthusiastic Jaguares.
      In fairness however, there are 18 players who are unavailable due to injury so the cupboard is bare at the moment in terms of personel.

    Another example of a players, a captain even accelerated too quickly into major coaching roles roles.
    The top coaches seem to emerge more typical from those who had middle of the road playing careers. Very few great All Blacks have made great coaches:
    Fred Allen
    Brian Lochore
    Alex Wylie
    
    Many great, and not so great, All Blacks have been mediocre coaches.
    Laurie Mains
    Graham Mourie
    John Mitchell
    Todd Blackadder
    Mark Hammett
    Frank Oliver
    Tana Umaga
    John Kirwan
    Robbie Deans

      The problem with the litany of coaches who failed at the Hurricanes was the players, not necessarily the coaches. Beegee Williams was Mourie’s co-coach, and his record is outstanding right through the grades with Ponsonby, Auckland and Manu Samoa.
      
      Also disagree with your assessment of Mains, Deans as “mediocre”, or that Lochore was a great coach.

        You can argue at the margins about individuals, but the main point is that rushing great players or captains into big time coaching jobs is a bad idea.
        As for the Hurricanes, their best coaches have clearly been Colin Cooper and Chris Boyd and now John Plumtree, guys that have done the hard yards to build coaching careers.

        Don’t disagree that you have to serve a coaching apprenticeship. Mind you, Umaga, after not doing much at Toulon despite a huge war chest, did ok with Counties-Manukau.
        
        But yes, and joking aside there have been a number of good coaches here at club level in Auckland over the past 15 years, particularly out of Ponsonby who have done an outstanding job with the club and age-grade rep teams they have been assigned. Yes, the pro level is a lot more complex, yet we have no problem seeing that as the pathway for age group, then club players to transition on to ITM Cup, then Super rugby, then international play. So why not coaches? The same three issues of Innovating, Influencing and Implementing remain the same no matter at what grade you coach. Going up the grades just expands the requirements within the same three criteria, but unless you master those at a lower level, you will be exposed the higher you go.
        
        Instead, typical Jaffas, they despise anything homegrown, and try to cheat by importing external management expertise. Hence David Nucifora which is when the rot first set in. Pat Lam was a justifiable promotion at the time. But despite his prior Auckland-connections, John Kirwan was not. he had not achieved anything of note with Italy or Japan (compare with BG Williams with a similar tough 2nd-tier nation with Manu Samoa making it beyond pool play in three World Cups in succession). Instead, it was political machinations that put Kirwan there.
        
        And that’s the core problem in Jaffaland rugby – too much politics in the rugby, and in the board room. But then that has always been the problem with Auckland rugby. People think that the Fred Allen ear of the early 1960s, or that 15 year Hart-Trapp-Williams-Henry reign of 1982-97 is the norm. It’s not. Auckland rugby’s long-term legacy is one of under-achievement compared to the player-resources at their disposal.

      Although, credit where it is due to BJ, he had to manage an All Black team in transition from 1985-87, and he utilsed both Wyllie and Hart well at the 1987 World Cup.
      
      But both of them steered Lochore behind the scenes, especially when it came to establishing a coherent selection criteria that fitted in with a pre-set game plann, i.e., the onme that both Canterbury, and then Auckland had perfected under Wyllie and Hart.
      
      The All Black team that lost the 3rd test to the Wallabies in 1986, and with it the Bledisloe Cup was one of the worst selected in history: Veterans Gary Knight and Mark Shaw, and a block-bash 2nd five eighth in Arthur Stone, and Jock Hobbs ahead of Mark Brooke-Cowden indicated a conservative game-plan, but they had Frano Botica not Grant Fox at no. 10…and they tried to run it all day.
      
      Some of Laurie Mains’ selections, especially at half back were debatable, but he too had a team in transition, and he was trying to transform the existing toxic culture. So it wasn’t just on-field play that could be observed that was driving the selections, Hence Graham Bachop’s moodiness in 1992 disqualified him for a few years. And Mains sure as hell got it right at the end of his tenure.

        The team that Mains coached at the 1995 RWC was one of the greats. They should have won the bloody thing.

  Agreed it is not really relevant. However this is a serious matter in itself. The Police Officer driving the car at the time should be issued an infringement for driving a vehicle without a warrant of fitness. It is the responsibility of a person driving a vehicle to ensure that the registration and warrant are up to date, although admittedly virtually all drivers rely on the owner or employer keeping these up to date.
  It is of concern that there was a systems failure within the Police which meant the vehicle was not checked for a warrant when it should have been.

      True. I would imagine the Holden dealer had a warranty understanding with the Police to carry out warrants. A Police driver shouldn’t be required to check for warrants every time they enter the vehicle. Mind you, both Holden and Ford are struggling to survive in Oz, and there have been some customers who have had serious warranty issues.

      The Italian annexation wasn’t completed until 1936 I think, which is probably when NZ were asked to recognise it at the League of Nations. Mussolini’s conquistadors were so useless, even with mustard gas, planes and tanks against men in horses armed with spears it took them months to beat Haile Selassie’s men. You can take the soldier out of Italy, but you can’t take the Italy out of the soldier. ???
      
      Also, I seem to recall Anthony Eden resigned from the British cabinet at the time because his Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, didn’t take a firmer line against Mussolini’s invasion of Abyssinia. But Baldwin redeemed himself later in 1936 by resisting Edward VIII in the matter of marrying Wallis Simpson.

        Kimbo, without wanting to mitigate Soviet oppression in the Baltic countries, it needs to be said that Russian expansion there began well before communism.
        
        In fact, some say it was Latvian reaction to a brutal repression in Latvia by Tsarists’ Cossacks that later helped the Reds take over Russia in 1917.
        
        Latvian regiments that switched support to the communist side and became known as the Latvian Red Riflemen helped suppress anti-Bolshevik uprisings in Moscow and Yaroslavl in 1918.
        
        You can read in Wikipedia also that “the Latvian Red Riflemen were instrumental in the attempt to establish Soviet rule in Latvia in 1919.”
        
        Sadly, now free Latvia’s ethnic-Latvians make up less than two-thirds of the country’s population. The biggest minority comprises ethnic Russians, who make up a quarter of the country’s population.
        
        Contrary to what neo-marxist-inspired multiculturists preach, having such a small dominant group is a future powder keg.

    Wrong at so many levels. You have forgotten (or never knew) that it was Japan who attacked the US at Pearl Harbour, the British in Malaya and the Dutch in Indonesia. That is Japan embarked on an agreesive war. Not surprisingly the US fought back.
    In every case it was the Axis powers who attacked everyone else. And for Italy and Germany their attacks were formally co-ordinated.

      The European powers had divied up East Asia except Japan stayed more or less free and started to industrialize
      
      And the European powers along with the USA who were the imperial powers in the region did everything they could to prevent the rise of an East Asian power while Japan joined their great game – they grabbed Korea around 1910 for example.
      
      And they all impeded access to the resources Japan needed to industrialize
      
      Doesn’t mean I think it was right for Japan to bomb Pearl Harbour anymore than I think it is right for the USA, GB and France to have bombed Syria last week or for American troops to be occupying the oil fields of North East Syria as we speak
      
      But don’t try and tell me the Dutch had a right to the Dutch East Indies now Indonesia or the French to Indochina or the Brits to Malaya or the USA to Hawaii for that matter because they took and held them by force

      So who knows, if the Donald continues to Make America Great Again he may also be in the running for (shout out here for sometime-Kiwiblogger, oob! ?) the Nobel Pize in Economics. I can’t recall anyone ever doing that double.
      
      I’d suggest that as Trump only limits his published output to only 140 characters at any one time, even his most enthusiastic supporters will admit the Nobel literature prize is unlikely to ever come his way.       In 1939, after several skirmishes, Zhukov, with seven Russian divisions and two Mongolian divisions, decisively defeated the Japanese at Khalkin Gol.
      
      Then in 1945, with Japan on the ropes, the Red Army took Manchuria from the Japanese. The Western Allies, co-operating with the Soviet Union, appear in hindsight to have been misinformed about the strength of the Japanese army left in Manchuria.       That border dust-up in 1939 was the reason for the Japanese signing their own Non-Agression/Neutrality pact with Stalin in 1941 (without reference to their anti-Comintern allies, and just two months before the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union).
      
      Instead, it more or less committed the Japanese militarists to expand East and South against the Americans (who had imposed oil sanctions to curb the Sino-Japanese conflict), and not North and West against the Soviets.

At the same time, it chose to invest in rebuilding some level of armed forces after many years of continual cuts. The priority was in naval and air defence, including the purchase of the Wellington bombers that became the nucleus of the famous 75 Squadron.         Some examples of “trolling” over the years:

        2. Women should be able to vote.
        3. Homos can be free of persecution.
        
        All of these ideas were considered outrageous at one time and you would have cried them down as trolling had you been around.

More power outages in Auckland last night.

Yesterday there was a little bit of rain and the wind blew at maybe 30kph. And the fucking power cut off again at 11.30.

No way to tell what the outlook was coz Vector’s website was down and their cute little phone app thingy didn’t work. Fortunately it was back on this morning so all’s well until the next blackout.

I suppose this is how advanced societies fail. Gradually things degenerate until everyone gets used to huddling over a woodstove by candle light. Soon it becomes ‘normal’ and the people just have to accept that they no longer live in the First World.

Wonderful.

  Yep. They get arrogant and lose all touch with reality. I noted the NZH editorial which said, in response to efforts from Steve Braunias:

Candles, cans of food, gas for the barbecue, torches, a transistor radio, batteries, and bottles of water in case the pipes are broken. To go much beyond that sounds excessive.”
  
  One storm – 1/4 of Auckland without power, followed by rolling outages at the slightest hint of rain/wind. Sewage (normally) running through the wastewater all over Auckland (not to mention microplastics and microfibres) and other towns with contaminated supplies. But ‘the authorities’ want to massively increase the population in ever smaller dwellings, ever more intensively, who have no access to natural food/clean water sources etc.
  
  Forget about ‘doomsday’ scenarios of nuclear war. Just look at what a little rain/wind can do. The human species is not ‘ignoring’ the natural world. It’s at war with it – and determined to spite it at every turn, be it in infrastructure or sexual behaviour.
  
  One thing that would have been positive about responding to doomsday scenarios, and planning for it, is that life would have been truly ‘sustainable’. As it is, we’re a disaster waiting to happen, becoming more vulnerable all the time as arrogant self-indulgence and hubris determines actions.
  
  There are two marked examples in Japan from the 2011 tsunami:
  
  “Residents of Aneyoshi, Japan, heeded the warnings of their ancestors. They obeyed directions and wisdom found on a local stone monument: “Do not build any homes below this point,” it reads. “High dwellings are the peace and harmony of our descendants. Remember the calamity of the great tsunamis.” When the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan, this village sat safely above the high water mark…residents of Aneyoshi would caution against ignoring the lessons of their ancestors.
  
  “In the end,” wrote Kathryn Schulz … “the magnitude-9.0 Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed more than eighteen thousand people, devastated northeast Japan, triggered the meltdown at the Fukushima power plant, and cost an estimated two hundred and twenty billion dollars.”… Technology and preparation can help, but building higher is a surer defense. Always read the tsunami stone.”
  
  I have no doubt that ‘the authorities’ in Tohoku would have labelled any attempt to take account of ‘tsunami stones’ in its development as unnecessarily alarmist in our technological age.

      There are plenty of experienced Kiwi nurses with school aged kids sitting at home or working other jobs who would jump at the opportunity of working school term hours.
      
      Schools with 1500 pupils might need two nurses but conversely one nurse could manage two small schools.
      
      This isn’t just a public health issue – nurses could take over the responsibility from St Johns trained teachers for first aid and dealing with kids with allergies etc.
      
      A concept certainly worth exploring.

    Used to have them a long time ago. Not silly to start looking after kids at school as they can detedct other issues as well.
    Lots of things don’t need a Dr. to fix and many nurses can sort these things.
    
    In general a dammed good idea.
    Not dissimilar the having Dental nurses at school.
    Eye checks used to be done and of course many of the earlier vaccines were administered at school. Way to get it done with minimum inconvenience to parents.
    Plenty of young ladies in their early puberty could use some help.

It seems even after sweet cheeks promised them a bump in pay he has backpedalled to it being another promise that will take four (4) years. Has anybody else noticed that it is becoming a common fall back that so many promises are going to take four (4) years? Are the COL starting their next election campaign early? Is this the alternative to the drip-feeding of “underfunding” they were going to use? Or have they changed their strategy after the first two drips backfired?

The fact that simon bridges is on 10% should be a big wakeup call to national, running your own variant of Jacinda Ardern is not what the ‘masses’ of the party wanted and the wrong person won the leadership race….

A strong candidate would have been much closer to the parties base in the mid 40s, I believe Judith would have been able to rally that party base, instead they have this fella who is softening the party to go after the green votes….

And even if it works, and they push those two parties under 5% and get the majority, they have still failed to move NZ to the Right, and will have trouble getting back in, when those votes return to labour the election thereafter…

Typical short term thinking… Besides they will just either, A.) remove the 5% threshold or B.) give their partners guaranteed seats like ACT C.) allow 14 year olds to vote, then nationals entire plan is nullified…

    We have the absoloute strongest opposition in the history of NZ by number of seats, against the most incompetent and useless government in the history of NZ, their members picked by diversity quotas, their leader incapable of making any decision….
    
    The only policies they have are the policies of the unions, and radical policies of the green party, and they are the most useless and unpopular policies….
    
    And all those policies are bad policies, unpopular policies like shutting down the oil industry or spending ~23bn in auckland on public transport about ~70K per houshold, and increasing their rates 30% above current increases, charging upto ~$8 for a trip from albany to CBD (what I have heard is in the current plans) and putting a ~25cent tax per liter on fuel, as well as turning away car ships, and making it more difficult to get cars warranted and keep them on the road…
    
    This is a litteral war against cars and workers that they are waging, where the victims are the very core voter base of labour, they have litterally gone insane reality, their leader cant make a single decision she is that hopeless, she used to be a fish and chip shop worker before becoming a student politician (its just as bad as the venezuelan president having strong working class credentials as a bus driver), this is the perfect opportunity for national to steal and convert most of labours base….
    
    They should be walking all over them right about now, with pro-worker policies like bringing back apprenticeships, and reopening parks, restoring parking in parks and community centers, so that poor people who cant afford to live right next to them can have access to them…
    
    Hopefully they are saving it for closer to the election, but I don’t think so, I think that candidate was Judith Collins, and I think this game about pushing the minor parties under 5% is the Game Plan we have….

  Dogs can survive on a diet relatively high in carbohydrates although PhilU pushing his veganism was close to animal cruelty.
  
  Where it all comes unglued is with working dogs. They need protein & plenty of it to repair the tissues broken down & damaged.
  
  Mine were fed dog biscuits & mutton. They thrived.

    Being a fashionably pathetic soy eating vegan wimp is manageable if you work in IT or make coffee for a living in a big city.

        Nev. Lost my taste for craft beers. They are technically pretty awful and often have bacteria and fermentation issues. They are over priced over rated and give you a crook tummy. Plus you end up drinking with a bunch of pretentious pricks.

      Missed your comment on Donalds Presses a few days ago Swifty. As Maggy’s link showed they folded in 1988 although I’d thought that they’d hung on longer than that. The products are still manufactured under the “Donalds” name but in Oamaru.
      
      The photo of their original Perry St address was interesting. That I think is now occupied by a firm reconditioning washing machines. Donald Presses moved from there in C1980 & occupied the old Rothmans factory building in Papawai Place.
      
      The Rothmans factory was built for them about 1974 by the government of the day trying to attract employers to the provinces.
      
      When the much needed ‘Rogernomics’ grenade hit Masterton it went off with a real bang.
