Went to Masterton on Saturday. The difference in the price of 91 octane between Masterton and Lower Hutt is now 3 to 6 cents per litre. Before the Auckland fuel tax went on it was 12 to 15 cents per litre because of the Gull effect.
The only conclusion I can draw from this is that the rest of the country is now helping to pay for the Auckland tax.
A predictable outcome.

    Over the weekend I saw 91 octane petrol prices as high as $2.26 per litre in Auckland and as low as $2.02 in Rotorua.
    
    Wasn’t Goff’s AKL petrol tax supposed to be 10c per litre + GST (=11.5 cpl)?

      So fuel in Auckland is 4c per litre more than it is in Lower Hutt.
      The fuel companies are obviously just sucking up the Auckland tax and apportioning it around the country at whatever level they can get away with.

      Rotorua has long had some of cheapest fuel prices in North Island, there is one station in particular that sets the price, when it closes at 6Pm , the others along Te Ngae Rd all jump up 5c then come back down in the morning when it opens again.

        As for Auckland prices they definitely are 11c or so dearer than a month ago.
        But some parts of Auckland have prices up to 8c cheaper than other parts.
        Theres as much variation in Auckland as in all of the North island. I notice the rich pricks in St heliers pay highest price of all here

      It definitely depends on where you live!!
      
      From what I’ve seen while out and about in the central Waikato, ‘Waitomo’ and ‘Gull’ seem to be the cheapest, although the ‘profit motive’ is still strong in some. In one instance I saw a petrol station (No names or location) charging 12c more per litre than its nearest competitor located less than a kilometer down the road. Perhaps it was where it was situated, but it seemed to be very well patronised.

        IGM, I can’t remember there being polling booths (although I suppose there were some), Local Body elections being held by postal voting.
        
        Experience shows me that the feral classes don’t have the energy to lick an envelope, let alone post one and I’ve seen few professional envelope lickers advertising their tax-payer paid services to those feral classes so I question again whether a single non-ratepayer has ever voted in a Local Body election (in the past 25 years).

Harcourts report average selling price falls in Auckland and Wellington, along with fewer sales and fewer new listings.

Median price is a better indicator than average. A small number of outliers can impact average, but median is more consistent over time, though not perfect.

And median prices show a different trend to average prices. For example (REINZ actual sale prices) –

Auckland median price June 2017 $856,000; June 2018 $850,000. Not exactly $100,000.

Wellington median price for June – $595,000 – highest ever. All of NZ in June, median equal to its highest ever at $560,000.

Lies, damn lies etc. Accepted a large real estate agency is reporting only its own sales – if it is actual sales as the article refers to selling prices, whatever that means. Could they be drumming up business as sales and listings drop? On the basis of FOMO …. buyers get in quick because if listings continue to drop prices will rise again?

Is it possible to be too cynical where real estate agents are concerned?

  Depending on what side of the market we are on, the realestate agencies market to either sellers or buyers. One might cynically say, they play both sides. If the market is on the way down they promote more to buyers but use it as a tool to force sellers to reduce prices to facilitate a sale (agents have only one thing in mind, their pockets..always). When the market is up its the converse, marketing to sellers more than buyers to encourage a higher sell price, pressure buyers into thinking they will lose out if they don’t put in a high offer. Realeste agents are no better than car salesman. They work for their pocket and couldn’t care less about their seller or the buyer.

Jason Morrison, the Aussie correspondent on TV3 says the removal of plastic supermarket bags is not being received well across the ditch. Customers are complaining about shoulder injuries from carrying the overfilled heavy reusable bags. The most noticeable thing is supermarket shoppers are now buying fewer groceries as spontaneous purchases are left on the shelves as shoppers have limited bag space. He said, as I have thought for some time, that banning plastic supermarket shopping bags is a money making scam by the supermarkets who are now making money selling reusable bags to customers. Customers are also now realising without the light plastic shopping bag they have to purchase heavier plastic rubbish bags for their kitchen tidy.
My mum in her 80’s cannot lift the heavy reusable bags of groceries out of the trolley into her car so has plastic supermarket bags in her boot to transfer groceries into so she can do so safely.

    Years ago hotels were banned from serving champagne in hollow stemmed glasses for health reasons, but now reuseable straws are better for the environment.

I take the dog out for a walk and what do you see everywhere. Used Paper Coffee cups, Paper Soft Drink containers and lids, Plastic cups, the list is endless. Dont blame the Coffee makers, McDonalds, Burger King etc. It is the bastards who use the World as a rubbish dump. Address the cause and you will reduce the problem!

      Glass is heavy, multiplies the cost of transporting the milk, and it is fragile. Can be reused but is expensive (relatively) to do so. Glass also takes a fair amount of energy to make – both new and recycled takes energy.
      
      Back when there was a lot of local delivery of milk, switching to plastic allowed about 30-40% more to be carried by the vendor because of the reduced weight of the packaging.
      
      Don’t know if you recall, but you used to get milk in pint and quart bottles, and the quart bottles were particularly fragile being larger.

        True Ed Snack but in at least one region there is a small business growing steadily delivering milk in glass bottles to the door. Started from nothing but has built up a very successful business with a steadily growing clientele who in large part help increase the demand. Friends and relatives see the milk come out of the fridge in a stylish glass bottle and are keen to get theirs that way too. Regular deliveries means a constant supply of fresher milk for busy families who only have to remember to put the bottle out. A subtle sign that the regions are again leading the way.

    I believe reusing bottles is uneconomic. However, glass is infinitely recyclable if ground down and remelted. Plastic is best burnt to generate power or converted into furniture or waste bins etc, but that’s expensive. And every options viability is underpinned by cost. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Replaced with something bio-degradable, both the local pet shop and Mitre 10 only have bio-degradable bags now but they charge for them. Overtime however, retailers will absorb those costs in the market effort for customers. I think moaning about the alternatives is defeatist, there were no plastic bags once and the world moved along just fine. I don’t mind helping out an older person at the shopping centre, kind of makes one’s day. In Auckland the drains are not protected to prevent plastic going into the storm water – Goff deserves a punch ‘in the chops’ for that.

      A British group reckon they have bio-degradable plastic bags that break down to nothing as they have an additive during production. A university trial submerged these bags in seawater for 2 years and they had barely begun to break down.

      Not so. Paper bags were much more difficult to carry. Shopping was done more frequently and in smaller quantities.
      
      Can they really make plastic bags degradable and still fit for purpose? The additive OXO claimed to degrade bags eventually to millimeter sized fragments does so by turning the plastic int CO2!

        Yeh, I remember the paper bags. Very hard to lift and transport. You had to wrap your arm around them like you were carrying a baby. The modern, light, singlet plastic bags are a marvel of technology, thin and strong. Paper actually creates more pollution, uses more water in the creation and takes just as long to break down as the plastic.

        Some here will no doubt recall that plastic bags were a revolution when they first arrived; at last we could actually carry thing without having the bag’s contents fall out of the bottom – a fault that paper bags were especially prone to should they beome wet – a not uncommon occurance in NZ’s climate.
        
        Not surprisingly, and because they were so ‘convenient’ the world embraced the plastic bag with great enthusiasm; perhaps too much in fact since ‘those who know about such things’ evidently saw them to be a threat and are no determined to stop their use.
        
        Noticeably, ‘paper bags’ are not mentioned in the current debate. and one does have to wonder why.
        
        Does anyone know why this may be; perhaps the quality isn’t up to it, or perhaps even they aren’t ‘green’ enough?

        Paper bags are pretty much worse for the environment in almost every way –
        
        “[A] paper bag has a more adverse impact than a plastic bag for most of the environmental issues considered. Areas where paper bags score particularly badly include water consumption, atmospheric acidification (which can have effects on human health, sensitive ecosystems, forest decline and acidification of lakes) and eutrophication* of water bodies (which can lead to growth of algae and depletion of oxygen).
        
        Paper bags are anywhere between six to ten times heavier than lightweight plastic carrier bags and, as such, require more transport and its associated costs. They would also take up more room in a landfill if they were not recycled.”
        
        Paper bags would have to be used three times to lower their global warming potential to match that of a conventional HDPE plastic shopping bag being used just once.

    The only single use plastic bags in our household are the mandatory City Council plastic bags. These are purchased from a retail store, into which we put our household rubbish. These bags I then have to carry to the most convenient collection point, an intersection in Puhoi Opposite a nature reserve trail. Needless to say bags are left by others at the particular corner for vermon to attack days before due collection date. Only an urban minded council could run something so amateur in a rural area.

  Perhaps it would make more sense just to not overfill the bags in the first place?

    To have more bags when you shop so that they are only half full? Personally I spent $20 on a bag with wheels which carries about four or five plastic bags worth* … but though I cannot walk and carry I can lift so long as I can stand in one place as I do it. Like when I lift my wheelie-bag into the back of the car.
    Education is the real answer. Wanting to help the planet … the only one we have to live on.

      Right jcuk like our rotary clothes line being made thanks to finding a star centre in the local recycle centre before we return to the Philippines. The wife also has a little wheeled shopping trolley likely also the only one here with no permanent bag attached. Some shopping days it handles two stout bags and on bigger shopping days 3 which might include a cooler bag. It allows her to go to the market and the wholesale grocers with ease but more importantly independently as she is the fussiest shopper ever seen. Even the humble spud is diligently hand picked to be mash able as well as make blue ribbon fries. When I arrive for pickup the shop boys are chuffed to have (10 peso NZ$0.28) for loading as it usually includes at least 3×6 litre bottles of water. But no surprise that there is one day a week even here that is plastic bag free yet it is only means most households for their trash disposal. Apart from burning it which is still largely the norm.

    I took 4 NW hessian bags to my New World Supermkt the other day. Worked well except school boy checkout operator filled 2 bags that I could gladly lift and gave me back my other 2 empty ones.
    
    I finished up requesting a supervisor to intervene as he refused to repack..
    
    I was not popular with the others behind me.

She owns a motel as well and orders her groceries on Saturday, delivered Sunday at a time she wants. Reckons it makes life a lot easier and saves money.       When I was a little kid, years before supermarkets came to Timaru, Mum used to ring up some bloke downtown who ran a grocery store and rattle off a list of stuff she wanted. He’d delivery it later in the day in a box. Butter, sugar, flour, marmite, Wheetbix . . When I was very young the milk was delivered in glass bottles by a bloke with a horse & cart.

        When I was a kid, my mum made me get on my bike (that I had to pay for by getting paid for taking the shit can out to the night cart at 1 am in the morning, rain, hail,or moonlight) and ride out to the local farmer at daybreak and hand milk the cow, put the milk through the hand driven separator – bring the milk home in a bucket and the cream in a glass bottle, both balanced on the handlebars.
        No surprise I became a juggling balancing clown on a bike at the local circus each year. 😆

        This would keep us warm until the early hours. Unfortunately the young ones became quickly cold as their bag contained little.

    Reminds me of when my local supermarket went plastic bag free a few years back in response to the usual minority of shrieking hystericals. They quickly switched back to plastic bags in response to a high level of complaints from the majority – and customers switching supermarkets.

    It’s reported to be 90%+ and it is 10 rivers. There are 2 in Africa, the Nile and the Niger; 2 in India/Pakistan the Indus and the Ganges; then 6 in Asia with the Mekong in SE Asia and 4 entirely in China – the Yellow, Pearl, Yangtze, and the Hai He, and 1 on the China/Russia border, the Amur.
    
    Mostly big rivers, but the Pearl and the Hai He are short but traverse heavily populated areas. The Amur is a long way North and I didn’t think it had a lot of population, but maybe in the lower reaches it does.

      What does that even mean? He answered journos questions with the correct answers that there’s no reason to deny them entry and if you don’t like their views, don’t go and hear them.     My name is David Cumin and I am part of the “Free Speech Coalition” challenging Mayor Phil Goff’s decision to ban speakers from Auckland Council-owned venues because of their political views. I am also one of the three plaintiffs in the litigation filed against Phil Goff and the Council standing up for freedom of speech – the case made possible by your financial support!
    
    I am writing to update you on our progress since Jordan Williams’ email on Wednesday and my interview on the AM Show.
    
    I am supporting this campaign as a matter of principle: I don’t want our politicians to dictate who is ‘acceptable’, who is not, and who, as a ratepayer, I am allowed to hear from, at venues we all pay for.
    
    You can read my affidavit to the Court, which sets out my reasons for publicly supporting the Free Speech Coalition, by clicking here.
    
    In it, I explain that I am not a supporter of the particular speakers and praise Mayor Goff for challenging some of their views. I also outline a number of speaking events at Council-owned facilities which I personally object to (and likely many ratepayers will), but believe should nevertheless not be banned or censored by the Council.
    We are burning the midnight oil to stand up for freedom of speech
    
    Our legal team of seven, plus additional helpers from our group, were in the office all weekend working on the case. This job has been made more difficult because Phil Goff and the Council’s lawyers seem to be getting ready to throw everything they have at us. They know that we have limited funds, and limited time. They’ve made no attempt to seek common ground, or to narrow the issues so the court can focus on the important issues of principle. Instead of replying to the open letter we sent urging Councillors to avoid the expense and reconsider the Mayor’s decision, they appear to be objecting to our public funding of this public-interest litigation.
    
    As an example of what could turn out to be underhand tactics, Mr Goff’s lawyers flagged in Court last week that they may have concerns about the “litigation funding”. We’re worried that they could be foreshadowing a claim that you don’t have the right to be funding it, and have it struck out.
    
    We are advised the Council doesn’t have a leg to stand on. We think it’s just another example of them trying to throw up red herrings and consume our resources. They must know that these things require our lawyers to divert from the key issues.
    
    Of course, Mayor Phil Goff uses your ratepayer money to defend his actions but is apparently open to opposing you using your own money to challenge him.

    Human Rights Commission want to appear – but what way will they go?
    
    At one of the hearings last week, the Human Rights Commission said that they want to ‘intervene’ in this case and have engaged their own QC to make submissions
    
    Of course, we hope they are going to come down on the side of freedom – a fundamental human right in liberal democracies – but this is the same Human Rights Commission who have been lobbying the Government to create ‘hate speech’ laws to criminalise ‘disharmonious’ speech. The Commission has not been in contact with us so we are naturally concerned that we may soon be not only battling the might of ratepayer-funded lawyers, but also another taxpayer-funded outfit!
    While Mayor Goff doesn’t believe in free speech, his old Labour Party colleague gets it right
    
    The Government has granted the speakers working visas to visit New Zealand. Immigration Minister, Iain Lees-Galloway issued a media release on Friday about this that included comments from him:
    
    “INZ’s decision in no way condones the views expressed by the pair, which are repugnant to this Government and run counter to the kind and tolerant values of the vast majority of New Zealanders…I understand that many people would prefer it if Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux never set foot in New Zealand. However the Immigration Act and immigration instructions have clear criteria for the granting of a visa, including certain character requirements, all of which I have been advised the pair meet.
    
    “Neither speaker has been convicted of a crime, nor banned from the United Kingdom or Australia as has been previously reported,”
    
    Mr Lees-Galloway also told Radio NZ:
    
    “The grounds on which someone can be excluded from New Zealand involve things like being involved in a terrorist organisation, being convicted of a crime or have clearly been involved in inciting violence.
    
    “None of those applied to those two people.”
    
    Precisely – that is what the law should consider. The Minister has upheld the rule of law and human rights, not buckled to the pressure of a vocal minority or made a political decision. And he has made it clear that he does not endorse their views – in fact, he called them ‘repugnant’.
    What happens next:
    
    Today at 3pm, the Mayor and Council are due to file and serve on us their evidence in response. Tomorrow, our legal submissions are due.
    
    The lawyers for the Mayor and Council as well as the lawyers for the Human Rights Commission must file their legal submissions by 5pm Friday.
    
    The Court hearing for our application for orders overturning the Mayor’s decision is set down for hearing in the Auckland High Court at 10am Monday – one week from today. We expect the hearing to be open to the public and encourage you to come along.
    A David and Goliath battle
    
    While we have enough money to get this off the ground and our lawyers are working at discounted rates, with everything the Council is throwing at us we are going to need all the help we can get to get this over the line against the Council (not to mention the Human Rights Commission).

  You should have gone to Specsavers Longknives. The World Cup Sevens has been a huge success. The stadium was around 3/4 full on the first day, and both yesterday and today were sellouts. The crowds have embraced the tournament and the game. To be fair, a number of people left after the USA was beaten by England around an hour before the women’s final, but there was still a terrific crowd in for the Black Ferns’ win.

        No, they have a World Series every year, but the World Cup is only held every four years. New Zealand won both the men’s and women’s cups in Russia in 2013.
        
        And now that Sevens is an Olympic sport, watch it grow. I watched the Chinese women’s team demolish South Africa on Saturday afternoon. Because it’s an Olympic sport, the Chinese government is investing in the women’s sevens programme. It will be interesting to follow their progress, and God help us if the world’s most populous nation started to take rugby seriously!

The second news item was on the opening of the new bridge on the West Coast and the Coasters marching against the CoL banning mining on all conservation land and how unhappy they are at Ugenie Sage. So the Police Commissioner knew about Wally Haumaha all along…

Police Commissioner Mike Bush was warned by his right-hand man about Wally Haumaha’s history with the disgraced officers at the centre of rape allegations which rocked the police force, according to Herald sources.

Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement was second-in-charge of Operation Austin and his “attention to detail” was later credited with rape convictions being secured against Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum.

Clement met Louise Nicholas – whose allegations led to Operation Austin and a Commission of Inquiry into police culture – to canvas her thoughts about Wally Haumaha being promoted to Assistant Commissioner last year.

She had read Haumaha’s statement to the inquiry team where he described Shipton as a “big softie” and Schollum as a “legend” with women and was opposed to him rising into the upper echelons of the police executive.

One officer told the 2004 investigation into the police sex allegations that Haumaha described Nicholas’ allegations as “a nonsense” and that “nothing really happened and we have to stick together”.

Sources have told the Herald that Clement – who graduated from Police College with Bush – warned the Commissioner about Haumaha and the potential risk to the reputation of police if he was promoted.

The details of the private conversation are unclear. But Clement remains in close contact with complainants in Operation Austin, particularly Nicholas, and has strived to change police culture since the Commission of Inquiry.

This may explain why the government has been so slow off the mark investigating Haumaha’s appointment. An inquiry was announced a month ago, but terms of reference have yet to be released, and there has been disapproval with Tracey Martin being given oversight of the inquiry, given Haumaha’s links to New Zealand First.

But now Bush is firmly in the frame. He was on the panel that recommended Haumaha’s, despite him having been warned that the appointment was fraught with risk.

And questions must now be asked of Stuart Nash. Was he tipped off about Haumaha before appointing him? Or did Bush knowingly keep that information from Nash? If that is the case, Bush is toast.

The week has already got more interesting.

      It will be interesting to hear Nash’s response, if it transpires that Bush did indeed know about Haumaha’s past comments. Bush appears to have either a) breached the “no surprises” policy, and b) by recommending Haumaha for appointment when there were clearly issues that could bring the Police into disrepute, made a massive error of judgment which has also put the spotlight on the Minister.
      
      I would suggest that Mike Bush might well be clearing his desk very soon.

Will see how well the Tramways Union in Wellington (representing some bus drivers) have judged things today with their industrial action.
They have been wanting a spill with Tranzit owner Paul Snelgrove and his daughter (the HR Manager), located an ‘issue’ and are now trying it on.
The objective being to infuriate the public and turn them against Tranzit using an issue (the alleged 14 hour days) that the public can hopefully sympathise with. However the union has misjudged the public in the past and may well have done so this time.
They went to the Police over the ’14 hour issue’ but whether there are ‘infringements’ would turn on legal interpretation – Tranzit would not be so daft as to flout the law as to drivers’ times and breaks. So this would merely seem to be a publicity stunt.
Seems Tranzit is a bit vulnerable as it could not sign up a full complement of drivers and seems to be relying on contracting some driving to NZ Bus using their drivers facing redundancy and it is these drivers the union is calling out.
Anyone has any other ‘takes’ on this.

    Don’t know actual figures, but it seems Tranzit and NZ Bus (who used to run all the Wellington/ Hutt Valley buses) have similar pay for drivers who have been in the game for a few years. NZ Bus has been burdened with agreements that give higher pay to long term drivers which would go beyond what would be warranted by extra skills, etc.
    NZ Bus drivers on higher pay levels facing redundancy either have to apply to Tranzit and accept lower pay levels or look elsewhere for work (eg truck or taxi driving). This is the fundamental issue.
    Bus drivers wanting to get into driving B Doubles would need to upgrade to class 5 licences, so cannot immediately get into top end truck driving.

  Yes. As with cleaning contracts, if you win the contract by under-bidding the competition, the only way to get a return is via your staff’s pay and conditions. That can have repercussions. I blame the people who give the contract to the cheapest outfit, in this case presumably Wellington council.

    Clark Labour Government included contract cleaning, catering and laundry in its industrial relations law to cover the ‘hospital’ contract situation although in the main the cost was borne by the health budget.
    I think Andy is going to extend this to public transport contracts. After all it is the same issue at stake.
    The fundamental issue with all this, is should employees be entitled to enhanced pay and conditions by merely being with the same employer (or being in the same effective workplace) for many years. This is especially where the employee’s skill level and efficiency has reached a ‘plateau’.
    Unions fight hard to retain such ‘conditions’ (eg the fight against ‘bulk funding’ of teachers’ salaries) whereas ‘contracting out’ undermines such enhanced pay and conditions. Hence the present bus situation is another manifestation of the same problem.

When they used to have council employed cleaning staff very little actually cleaning went on at all and yetvthe costs were a lot higher.

How does one suddenly advance from being a medical carer of infants, children, and adolescents specialist to an expert on how Earth’s climate works, you know gravitational forces of our solar system, radiation from the sun and cosmic rays from stars in deep space etc and then take a giant leap into becoming an expert into the world of Genetic Modified food, with zero experience in both fields?

  Sir Peter has been trained in scientific methodology. He is very good at it within his field of medicine.
  Other experts publish peer reviewed papers which Sir Peter can read and talk with experts across multiple disciplines and come up with recommendations to the NZ govt etc.

He is strong on crime and believes prison is the place for criminals. Speaking from his experience as a prosecutor, Simon said those in prison are there for murder, manslaught, rape and violence. You do not go to prison for stealing a Marz bar or smoking cannabis. Unfortunately, he fluffed the line and said you do not go to prison for stealing a Marz bar or smoking a Marz bar.     I fully support his tough on crime stance. However, that should only apply to those who are guilty. That is the vast majority.
    
    I watched the story of Teina Pora last night. His innocence would not have been proven except for Tim McKinnel who was his knight in shining armour.
    
    There are other innocent people in jail and of course Peter Ellis. Simon Bridges should reconsider his position on this. Andrew Little is right on this issue. Bridges should not oppose for the sake of opposing.

Many of these cases arise from someone calling the cops due to an argument where both parties are equally guilty. Due to police bias the male is arrested and policy is to imprison them until trial.
  
  Hence you get 200 cases a week. A small percentage of those involve violence warranting imprisonment. Along with the vast number of miscarriages of justice caused by police bigotry towards men most don’t deserve anything other than a recorded warning by the police or legal system.
  
  Eg men get imrisoned for having defensive stab wounds to thier hands. The women turns on the taps when the police arrive and cliam the male was violent and they acted in self defence.
  
  Will the Herald contact an organisation that represents male victims of domestic violence next or is its role propaganda.

The SSC is an AT ex-staffer who now appears to be contracting back to AT to consult with the public about AT upgrades.. It’s the second meeting I’ve been to as a volunteer, one also from community facilities where the council staffer leave to become consultants, and then rehired back by council mates, to hold the council’s public consultations with overpriced time wasting workshop meetings with the public. For what should be a straight forward online consultation using existing council staff and paid elected officials to do their job and consult on some basic transport and facilities changes.

  I guess “low wage” is relative, and the young folk coming into the country on the student visa rorts don’t think it’s that low wage or they wouldn’t be happy to start off in pizza parlours and petrol stations.

    We are a very high waged economy.
    
    Wages in Chile are $7 an hour
    China $4 an hour
    The USA and Canada $14 an hour.
    Ours are at least $16 and going up soon.
    
    We do however have high costs, due to our small population our long distance from big suppliers, our high bureaucracy salaries, our lack of competition if groceries and building and our high markup mentality.

      You are correct about Chile. Total average annual wage in NZ is 50 per cent higher than in Chile.
      
      But Chile is a poor country, whether or not you compare it with NZ. By GDP per capita, Chileans are the 81st richest folk in the world, while New Zealanders are the 48th richest. The US is 19th richest by this measure. (Oil states plus Luxembourg and and Singapore are in the richest ten.)

        They were off the top of my head guesses based on my previous reading. I still stand by them and they can be looked up on various comparison sites etc.
        
        Our “problem” is that we are so near to Australia which is one of the world richest countries (minerals) and has some of the highest wages.
        
        We all have friends or relies there, and we can move their very easily.
        But try to move to say Luxemburg or Saudi Arabia.

I’m getting so sick of the talk about poverty in NZ. People make choices, sometimes terrible choices, but in NZ we have such a strong safety net that you can still survive, in relative comfort too.

Less care, less responsibility.

Also, these damn plastic bag and straw campaigns. Tired of them. If I use something, I put it in the bin. People who get stuff, then litter… they’re not going to respond to a campaign.

If you have some time, I stumbled on this Youtube clip that shows TRUE poverty, TRUE environmental damage (needs more than a straw campaign)….. The Yamuna, India’s most polluted river.

People of NZ: shut up, and take some more responsibility.

  Just walk around your town and see how many people are buying take away coffees, how many people are sitting in cafes.
  How many have mobile phones, smart tvs and broadband at home watching tv all day.
  The shops are full, the car parks are full, the streets are full.
  The only “poverty” is amongst the people that have not tried to improve themselves and have a victim mentality. Or those who have 6 children by six different fathers and want us to pay for them to stay home all day!

So many of them send a lot of money back to their families each week.
Eg today I saw an Asian lady sending $100 back to her home country.
That is money that should be staying here in NZ to build our economy, not theirs!

Here are a few events Mr Goff is supporting in the Auckland Museum: Shift Happens Intersectionality in Feminism Symosium, Late at the Museum #MeToo (This LATE we assess the repercussions and reactions that are redefining the sexual landscape and explain how society might change in the proces ) and an evening with Helen Clark. Biased much. What we do know is that all of those topics and speakers are highly politically charged. If the council venues fund political messaging via events and panels do they then have an obligation to be balanced. End result it’s a lot cheaper to go to the museum and here subsidised government endorsed propoganda.

Concerning Mr Lauer, this from the Stuff online website:

‘Lauer has partly opened up Hunter Valley Station to the public, complying with conditions set by the Overseas Investment Office when he bought the farm last year.

But the Department of Conservation and the Walking Access Commission are now pushing for unfettered access for trampers, hunters and tourists to a 40km unsealed, lakefront road that runs through the property’.(1)

Umm, perhaps I’ve got it wrong, but the guy has complied with the OIO demands, yet DoC is now DEMANDING that he open his property to all and sundry, and are getting all bitter and twisted when he won’t comply, his argument being essentially ‘My land, my choices, I do what I want with it. In this instance I CHOOSE to keep people off MY land’.

Am I correct in believing that (barring such groups as the Police and Fire Services), in NZ a property owner has the ‘right’ to decide who can go on his land?

Surely, if DoC are THAT desperate to access the land behind Mr Lauer’s property (which, oddly, they weren’t beforehand, if the article is to be believed) , they should fund the construction of a road from some other point, or is this just another DoC attempt to ‘prove’ something to ‘someone’ and to justify their existence as ‘Protectors of the environment’?

As I said, I may have missed it, but can someone explain what gives DoC their ‘special powers’ in this instance?

  The ownership is through Lauer’s company, Orange Lakes NZ.
  
  The Overseas Investment Office summary of the application to buy the station incudes:

One son still awake and I’m trying to figure out which meds to take so I don’t end up doing the thorazine shuffle tomorrow. Still, kids are happy and well. Watered the garden and planted a rose.

I see that Winston has come out and said that the high taxes on tobacco are not working, and they are contributing to crime etc.

Much as I think smoking is bad, I do feel sorry for those that still smoke.
You would be amazed at the number of young intelligent tourists that come here and that smoke.

I agree the tax has to be dropped back. And a continuing education program carried on.

As to the attacks on dairies. Why do we need them. I think they would have disappeared if it was not for our new unwanted immigrants from a certain sub continent.

They also peddle booze to our young kids.

  Corner dairies were a life-saver when I was a young mum without a car.
  
  On filthy rainy days when I had run out of an essential, I only had a 5-10 min slog down& up the hill to a dairy & home…. otherwise I’d have had to make a 30-40 min trip to the supermarket… and been drenched to a bone.
  
  Not every suburb has a supermarket… It can be a long haul for old folks /carless folks to reach some supermarkets. Dairies are damn handy.

    Perhaps, Maggy, but I don’t think they’re economically viable , or even rational.
    
    If it weren’t for them being a way to use the entrepreneurial-business visa entry to NZ I doubt many would still be around.
    
    And if they were weren’t around perhaps some order-by-internet, deliver by Uber system would by now mean Mums wouldn’t have to walk in the rain even to the corner.

    No, Stars and Stripes, dairy owners and staff certainly don’t deserve to be attacked.
    
    But as I see it, there’s a problem. Shopkeepers go into business in dangerous areas at their own risk. Would you feel sorry for a jeweller who set up shop in a rough corner of south Auckland and stayed there despite being robbed? Insurers would soon drive the jeweller out of business, and there would be little sympathy for the shop owner.
    
    Should tax payers, through the police, be expected to make viable those dairies in localities where it is too dangerous for them to operate without heavy police protection?
    
    Tobacco, with its extortionate duty/tax, complicates this argument. But the level of the tax is apparently the will of the people through Parliament.
    
    The tax, by making tobacco theft lucrative, is making it very dangerous to operate a dairy in some localities.
    
    Unless the politicians reduce the duty, you have to assume they don’t want tobacco sales to be viable in tough areas. Piling on police protection at taxpayer expense for such sellers is thus illogical.

Is the vile throwing of acid on the face of a three-year-old child in England related to ISIS?

Three arrested in London for the attack in Worcester, and a fourth arrested in Wolverhampton.

If this proves to be an ISIL terrorist attack it might push the British beyond their usual stoic and calm measured response.

Looks like the next industry to come under attack and decimation by the COL has been chosen when we read this just announced: “The forestry industry has been told to rely on growing trees to capture carbon dioxide, rather than cutting them for timber, to earn money from forests on steep hillsides.” “The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has made the recommendation following controversy over the dangers of harvesting timber on steep slopes.” You just can not possibly make up crap like this.
Apparently : “Four people have been killed so far this year in forestry accidents, the latest in hill country near Nelson.” In truth these were not all of people actually involved directly in commercial forestry operations but again hysteria is again overtaking facts. Even in the best of commercial operations their are fatalities that when investigated were the result of the individual NOT observing the increased safety measures put in place.
Official stats show only one (1) fatality in forestry harvesting this year to date but the hysteria mounts as other have involved a tree. Meanwhile the tree counter steadily ticks over as the promised big increase in planting has stalled through lack of effort. That was supposed to provide some correction to the perceived emissions problems.
