  It may be #143, I would be more interested in how much these ‘working groups’, ‘think tanks’ are costing as you can bet your bottom dollar the people on them will be earning more than the living wage! If I was on one of these talkfests I would ensure there was no quick or easy answer and drag it out for as long as they were still writing the pay cheque. Will we ever know the full cost? and more importantly will they produce a result that differs much from what we all knew they would come up with before they even got around the table?

Just listened to James Shaw say that all cars would need to be electric. Then JAG said we would need to subsidise them. And the National Party spokesperson, can’t remember who, said along the lines of the government is NOT DOING ENOUGH to encourage take up of electric cars. Seriously? That was the response?

  This Green “policy” shows that they have a real disconnect with the countryside and are totally focussed on the urban environment.
  Many people (not only farmers) run all sorts of businesses in a rural setting these days- sometimes quite remote settings.
  Electric only cars, and presumably other business related vehicles, are not peactical for people who live significant distances from town.
  Just shows the Greens ignorance and disdain for rural. Doesn’t stop them pontificating on what should/should not happen there though.

        There may have been one Tesla that did 1000km on one charge but it wasnt a pleasant trip. In the heat of an Italian summer, as the batteries work best between 30-40°C, with all the windows up and air-con off, they drove for 27 hours at 25 mph. They also changed the tyres to low gripping tyres. Not exactly normal driving conditions

      I do not think closing Tiwai would provide anywhere near enough for Shaw’s fantasy.
      Besides I’d like to see them try –Tiwai is owned by a big, multinational company with really deep pockets. They might accept forced closure as part of a deal but the cost to the Government would be massive.

      Where is the abundance of hydro SB? We only have to have a low rainfall period and the current system comes under stress. The Greens do not want any more dams.
      Geothermal is not that big –useful but not significant.
      NB. I have nothing against electric cars but Shaw cannot have it both ways –all electric vehicles but no more dams, no nuclear, no coal fired power station and now more more exploring for gas.
      The other issue is that the poorer in our community will suffer –they will not be able to afford electric cars.

  “National MP Jami-Lee Ross said the new government was talking a big game, but had yet to follow through.
  
  “There hasn’t been anything meaningful that’s been done around electric vehicle uptake and if there’s a serious desire for a reduction in emissions… government should be leading the way,” he said.”
  
  I could think of about 10 better responses, but here is one:
  “Subsidising the uptake of electric vehicles will make New Zealand poorer. The cost of the subsidies will be borne by those on lower incomes, and those in rural areas, especially farmers. The current value of the distribution infrastructure of petroleum is X billion dollars. Writing that off and replicating it for electric vehicles will cost X billion dollars. Constructing the required electricity generation capacity, while also meeting the Government’s commitment to both energy security and 100% renewables will cost $ x billion. Perhaps New Zealand should have a conversation about driving the uptake of electric vehicles towards 100%.”

  I heard that. JAG proposed a fee or fine on petrol cars to ‘help pay for’ electric cars.
  
  Judging by Kiwibuild, it could work like this: people who can only afford an older petrol car will be paying big fines so that first-car buyers can get brand new Teslas (like James Shaw’s one), subsidised down from $120,000 by the government and distributed in a lottery.

  Yeah well what do you expect from mr 9%, Grant Robertson was saying that they would finance their Tram through a mandatory ‘value capture tax’ charging property owners for the ‘benefits’ and Simon said ‘sounds like a good idea’.
  
  When judith put up her half assed criticism Simon Corrected her, and said she didn’t know what she was talking about despite being an ex-tax lawyer… Then we have the Mt-Albert/Pt-Chev slum (in reality it is just east waterview but mt-albert/pt-chev sounds better), Simon said that was our idea. Now it may have been, but FFS what idiot puts their hand up for that one…
  
  Didn’t have much to say about Canada/Australia/USA releasing information about chinese communist party infiltration of NZ government, didn’t have much to say about the anti-free speech nazis saying ratepayer facilities arent for half the population…
  
  And now he is coming for our cars, the affordable Tesla Model 3 which was supposed to cost 30K (entry level luxury cary pricing) USD is now more than 50K usd, for that price you can get the V6 version of VWs flagship the Touareg SUV, the Tesla Model 3 is glorified Toyota Corrolla in terms of size and functionality.
  
  The Touraeg is an actual Off-road, towing, ginormous luxurious workhorse made from the finest of German Granite, built like a tank….. The fact that the even with the best self-ascribed ‘electric vehicles’ you are paying flagship SUV pricing (for a premium brand like VW) for a Toyota Corrolla experience shows just how bad EVs really are….
  
  And that is not all, buy a Corrolla and you are more or less done giving money to Toyota, Tesla they hide the real cost of the vehicle in parts and repairs, want to replace a broken part, sorry no Generic you have to buy the Tesla part, want to take it to an independent mechanic to save money, sorry you have to pay 430NZD an hour, and Tesla won’t even sell you the parts or provide the documentation unless you become a licensed repairer….
  
  Contrast that to the Corrolla, you can take it to any mechanic, it probably will never give you an issue provided it is cared for right, but if it does you pay 1/4th the labour rate, the parts are cheap, you can buy them yourself, you can buy the repair manual, and generic parts are available.
  
  Simon better watch out, he is in for a Rightlash if he keeps this up. And FYI he is such a closeted Eco-Socialist, he was asked if he could have any car what car he would have, he said a Tesla… Can you believe this guy…

How, him and JAG say they are doing a lot, but what – trials of electric buses? Sorry, started by the last government.

On this issue, the thinking at the centre has been muddled.

There has been no thinking about how they will make up the 15% gap in current electricity demand as oil/gas/coal thermal power plants are phased out. But then you make the current fleet of 4mill cars plus trucks electric and we are in black out territory.

Dippy JAG points to the trial of electric buses. However, she has clearly not been appraised fully. Even Auckland, which wants an all electric bus fleet by 2040 knows Auckland does not have secure power to support buses, trams & trains without new sources of power & an upgraded network. Then there are all those cars to be bought (current price of a Tesla $120k to $150k) & charged every night.

When are these idiots going to join the real world?

  Here’s an idea for them:
  NZ led the world in splitting the atom.
  NZ led the world in giving women the vote.
  NZ led the world in climbing Mt. Everest.
  NZ led the world in playing rugby.
  Now, NZ could lead the world in producing clean energy from rubbish.
  There are clean-burning furnaces overseas that can burn all kinds of garbage at 2000 degrees C and produce virtually no emissions. Better for the environment than any landfill. Lets hook a big one of these mothers up to the Huntly power station, all the country’s rubbish (and recycling as China no longer takes it) can be transported there by electric-powered trains. The technology exists.

    Yes, I know. I worked on two waste to energy projects in the UK. Because of EU policy to reduce rubbish going to landfill (encouraged by taxes on disposal in landfill), Europe has invested heavily in waste to energy plants. The problem is the waste packaging industry has been in over drive for the last 30 years that there is more waste available on the market than power plants. This has made the economics of such plants not viable to operate. In the UK, we encountered the problem that it was cheaper to buy Norwegian waste than to use the local product. It was a case of trying to use market forces and deriving a perverse result.

    There was a catch to achieving the 2050 target. That is by 2030, all new car sold will need to be electric vehicles.
    
    So by then, they just have to solve:
    1. The cost;
    2. The electricity demand/supply of NZ;
    3. The technology such that the battery charge lasts further than 200km with only 1 person & no other load in the car.
    
    Not much to do then, & chances of achieving the target is zero. So let’s just get real here.

        In terms of metals: Mostly Lithium, about ~1kg/kWh + some Nickel and expensive Cobalt at the moment, though battery chemistries are likely to change as tech develops, and totals used will drop as energy densities inevitably increase. Lithium-Sulphur for example has almost twice the energy density and so half the lithium and is coming next in 2019:

        It is important to realise that batteries will be probably more than 99% recycled in future. The value of the materials in the battery pack will be up to 30-40% of the cost 0f a new pack once huge scale mass production works.     Hydrogen is bullshit for cars. But not a bad choice for that when we run out of fossil fuel or electricity gets sufficiently cheap to make splitting water economic.
    
    High latitude countries might eventually also use hydrogen to store summertime solar for winter time use – it’s the cheapest form of annual energy storage other than hydro-electric.
    
    Hydrogen is fantastic for planes – 1/3rd the mass of kerosene (though 4x volume) enables really big fast planes that can fly at Mach5 with global range, if power is cheap enough. Anywhere on planet in less than 4 hours.

There is some disquiet in Tauranga regarding the revelation from the widow of Awanui Black on Facebook the other day concerning her revelation that her husband was a Paedophile and a sexually active person during his life and claiming he committed suicide by alcoholic poisoning.
The concern by non Maori professionals is that the money -($11,000 reward) from Iwi is disturbing any real investigation by the Police.
The Police confirm at resent that nobody has come forward yet. It is expected that as the Iwi appear
to have closed ranks whatever and that none will.
Arihera Zhou, Black’s widow would appear to have been ostracised.
It is thought that this will fade quickly as the Police will have no evidence.

  Over the years, I’ve had numerous conversations with Maori women ‘survivors’ of sexual abuse. From the beginning of ‘iwi’ social services, they wouldn’t report it and didn’t want to use Maori social services. Why? Because the lauded ‘kaumatua’ in those organisations had often been the abusers. It’s difficult enough to deal with family fallout when reporting these things. Taking on the whole tribe – which is what ‘extended family’ equates to – let alone the political implications, is probably more than most would imagine in their worst nightmares. I don’t doubt that’s one of the reasons their social problems just go on and on – they maintain them, deliberately or not.
  
  Now, there really isn’t much of a choice in social services. They’re all pretty much ‘Maori’ and subject to the same tribal ‘loyalty’. They also have a very high tolerance for what each other does when they’re drunk, minimise the behaviours they do recognise, and project responsibility anywhere/everywhere else.
  
  If all Maori women/children came forward with evidence of abuse from within Maori/their families, it would make the #metoo movement look like toddlers’s play. I’m very sure it will all be hushed up, that very few would even consider coming forward, and that the whole Maori ‘system’ would be at real risk if they did.
  
  I’m simply stunned that Arihera Zhou had the courage to do it. Good on her. And if she is ‘shunned’, you’ll see exactly why the others don’t report it. Maori have always appeared to me to protect their abusers relentlessly and vigorously, one way or the other, with every rationalisation in the book.

And why employers don’t want to employ young people (no experience, no work ethic, drugs etc)

Man admits rape, which was recorded on phone by victim

A man has pleaded guilty to raping a teenager, who recorded on her phone the rapist ignoring her withdrawal of consent partway through sex.

Harris Henrick Barry Rangi Kaimanawa Robinson, 20, pleaded guilty in the Palmerston North District Court on Thursday to raping the woman in Levin in November 2017.

The pair were at the same property when Robinson started making advances on the woman, whose name is suppressed.

She initially rebuffed his advances, but the pair did later have sex, during which she grabbed her cellphone and started recording the interaction.

She told Robinson to stop, withdrawing her consent, but he told her “no” before raping her.

The recording indicates the rape lasted between 18 and 20 seconds.

Robinson was convicted, given a warning under the three-strikes law for violent offenders, and bailed until sentencing in September.

  Harry Holland and Bob Semple (sedition). John A Lee had a decent criminal record. I think Dover Samuels spent time in jail but not sure if he was actually sentenced to a prison term.
  
  Someone should probably keep a list of criminal convictions of current MPs. Mallard technically doesn’t but Mark and Woodhouse do. Maybe there are more.

    Of course there would have been many others who committed infractions at some time either before or after their time as an MP.

    Lee was a lot more than a former criminal. He had been what was later called a “juvenile delinquent” after a deprived, tough childhood. This inspired his book “Children of the Poor”.
    
    As a young teenager, Lee offended again. But he turned his life around, and, as an MP, with Roger Douglas’s father, rebelled against the overly praised Labour regime of Michael Joseph Savage.
    
    Lee lost an arm in the trenches of World War 1, where he was award the DCM and was inspired to write his book “Civilian into Soldier”.
    
    Lee was am orator, skilled in an art made less valuable by microphones, and then killed off by TV and radio interviews.
    
    When Labour in the late 1920s and 1930s was hammered in Parliament for the pacifism that earned prison terms for Harry Holland and Bob Semple, the Labour MPs would trot out Lee with his obvious war disability – the loss of an arm. That was before Lee led the mutiny against the Labour establishment.
    
    Among Lee’s works is an interesting book on the old “swaggies” who roamed pre-Welfare State rural New Zealand.

Well, good luck for them! They have been promised Thai citizenship within six months.
There are more than half a million stateless people in Thailand as a result of the ethnic cleansing in Burma of many different minorities. There are also millions of migrant workers both legal and illegal. Many are exploited as ultra cheap labour on building sites, fishing boats, fish processing factories and service stations.

  I suspect that if these stateless people became Buddhists and shared in the language, culture and values of mainstream urban Thailand (we’ll ignore the northern hill tribes and other local ethnic minorities within Thailand), the Thai government would look upon them with greater favor.
  
  On the other hand, perhaps the Thai government sees advantages to maintaining a reservoir of “untouchables” that it can exploit to do the “dirty work.”

I read an article yesterday about Theresa May’s plan to keep the UK tied to the EU.

There was a warning in the article related to ‘Third Countries’ . We need to be wary of what sort of relationship the NZ Coalition Government will try and slip us into as I recall David Parker talking about ‘alignment’ in one of his interviews about the FTA. It may have been a careless used of the word rather seeking to establish NZ as a Third Country.

  It’s possible new housing subdivisions could be powered by small Hydrogen Power Stations.

  The real breakthrough for hydrogen would be making using one of several known high temperature thermochemical processes driven by nuclear heat to drive a sequence of chemical reactions that split water into hydrogen and oxygen without waste of making nuclear power into electricity first. Would be quite cost competitive.
  
  That’s a good long term solution for global aviation and shipping without mobile nuclear reactors or fossil fuels.

Think Inc. is holding a an event shortly called Polarised at Aotea centre, discussing Islam and race amongst other things – with two international speakers one is lefty academic Cornel West, and the other neo-conservative writer Douglas Murray who authored “The Strange death of Europe: Immigration, Islam, Identity.” This event tseems very similar to the one that was banned.. But I thought it was interesting that when it tours in Australia they advertise it with a picture of each speaker, but when it tours here in Phil Goff’s totalitarian city they use different artwork with only a picture of the lefty academic. This advertising artwork really sums it up – Auckland has become so controlling (Mayor/Media) that it’s only ok to think one way and see half the story.

Man have I read some dumb arse comments today on electric vehicles.
Electric vehicles are already subsidised by not being subject to road charges or road use petrol taxes.
Electric vehicles run the risk of catching fire due to Lithuim batteries but newer tech Ali batteries cannot catch fire.
Electric vehicles can’t go up hills or have low towing capacity comments are rubbish as electric motors have thier highest torque at very low revs.
Not good for farm vehicles is rubbish as the tech is perfect for 4 wheel farm bikes that get plugged into a solar panel at the cow shed when not in use. Ali batteries have instant full charging for high use.
Lithuim is slower charging but new Ali batteries are near instant charging like capacitors.
The batteries wear out. Yes old Lithuims do but new types drop over years to a stable 80% for the cars lifespan.
Lack of power. Petrol vehicles are so inefficient in using energy compared electric vehicles that you could burn the petrol in high efficiency large scale power plants producing electric power and charge electric vehicles to travel up to 3 times the distance.
They don’t cost more to maintain as electric motors are far simpler than modern, very complex petrol engines. Once they become mainstream costs will drop from the high costs of today’s specialist support.
They cost too much. Presently they do but as in the cost of any mass manufactured product the cost will dramatically drop with competition and ultimately be no different if not lower than petrol vehicles with thier very expensive to make engines.
You don’t need to buy petrol, and the per KM power cost over the lifespan of the car, plus far lower maintenance costs will easy financial outperform petrol vehicles.

Sadly right of politics should be a support think tank for the advancement of Buisiness and technology. However due to Electric vehicles being labeled green tech the right has fallen into the trap of guilt by association. IE that it is something the Greenies want.
You guys need to get over your predudice.

  You know DJ up until about 1920 there were shitloads of electric cars in the world. They died out for the same reason they are not being accepted today. Lack of range and lack of quick charging facilities. They even had quick change battery stations then but still they died out. Perhaps their time will come again but trying to turn it into a “right” v “left/green” argument as you have just tried to is counterproductive. Electric cars will become predominant once they are shown to be be more cost efficient than ICE cars, not before. 🙂

    Obviously there is developement taking place in the issue of range and charging but in 5 to 10 years production models that compete with petrol in all respects will be coming off production lines.
    
    When petrol vehicles became normal infrastructure was needed to be created just as infastructure will be needed for electric vehicles.
    For example do you build 10,000 kiwi build homes without a power system. When all are completed and occupied do you then build the power system. Of course you don’t. You build infastructure to enable commerce because if you don’t you limit the potential of that commerce.
    Wait until it’s here ideology will leave us as a backward nation rather than a 1st world one.
    
    I am not making it a left right argument. I was pointing out its stupid that people presently do just that.

        Buisinesses are already building and investing in EV with multi million car production lines in the development phase. Wake up.
        
        Many comments criticise EV along with negative comments towards the greenies. I’m pointing out this is not an enviromental issue but a technology and Buisiness issue. Buisiness that prepares and trains for EV will be well placed. Those that don’t face a dwindling market. It’s already begun and once a high volume lower priced family car arrives, once the EV SUV arrives, once the EV 4 wheelers arrive, EV tractors arrive, then we face a massive change that will occur absent of politics.
        
        Meanwhile people attack the greens for wanting EV and EV is criticised due to that association. EV is not criticised due to the technology other than by those ignorant of the technology or with an equally ingrained love affair with ICE vehicles.
        
        There is no reason why hatred of the social engineering side of the greenies should not stop.
        EV is however where common ground exists between Buisiness and the greens IE the right of politics and the greens. We can be world leaders in EV uptake. We can improve our trade deficit by importing less petrol. We can have less vehicle noise and pollution in our cities etc.
        
        Saying wait, saying can’t, is a defeatist attitude.

  I think you will find a spectrum of opinions on the ‘right’. I have a post grad in engineering, and can see the time of Car and Truck EV’s is coming, driven by improvements in their economics and battery tech, not by greenie religiosity. Uptake should not be driven by govt subsidy or regulation – it’s expensive and unnecessary and will only advance the pace of uptake by a few years at a huge and unnecessary price.
  
  But we still have to use dense fuels for off-road, off-shore and international flight, and perhaps for cars in some rural and other use cases. (Eg parts of australia where people have to drive 1000km to ‘town’)

    I’ve got 18 years of product developement history within the electric motor industry. Electric motors (generators) are extremely simple (Stator and Rotor, and cooling) compared to the precision engineering of a petrol engine and its multitude of parts. Yes you need a few circuits and controller but even modern ICE cars need a computer. There is cost trade offs in that regard.
    
    Ultimately the electric motor, electrical system, and batteries will reduce in price to be less than an ICE system.

        In some Abo communities the only people who now speak English are the old aboriginal women from the ‘stolen generation’ who were taught English if they didn’t already know it – I saw them express that view on TV a couple of years back, they said that all the younger ones have simply decided not to attend local schools or bother to speak English. Today he opened his mouth and proved it yet again.
He did an Anti-Trump rage (following on from Garner’s ‘vacant lot’ rant) and in his complete and utter ignorance said that Trump was upsetting our ‘allies’ Germany and Russia.

If the Dummy had listened to any world current events in the last 18 months he might pick up that conventional/swampland USA treats Russia as a mortal enemy.
Washington insiders probably blame Russia for their toothache or their soda going flat. They are completely irrational.
But Russia an ally?
In language Flavell might understand : yeah nah Bro.
In the 1880s NZ built forts around the country with Large Gun placements. Bastion Point was one place started but not finished. North Head was completed. ‘The Russians are coming’.
This was decades before the commies and formation of the USSR, when the Czars were still in charge.
The UK is trying to provoke war with Russia and last time I read a history book Britain has always been an ally of NZ.
In short, NZ’s core allies are Britain, USA, and Australia.

Russia was a ‘fair weather’ ally in name only when we were at direct war with Germany; the latter have never been our ally whatsoever.

Our young men have died in multiple wars against the boche. They have never been our allies or even buddies really. If Flavell asks a Samoan they can tell him NZ armed forces took the surrender of German personnel there 104 years ago- when Germany clearly was an active enemy, not an ally.

The current German leader is as a dangerous to the world today as the Little Austrian ever was.
If there is actually a conviction for shoplifting at the Warehouse or Pak n Save in Blenheim- look for the German name. Not our mates!

The French are not even out allies. We have gone in behind Britain to help these self-centred, arrogant, but pathetic critters more than once and our troops died in defence of their country even though they were too chicken-shit to go hard in defence in 1940.

Of course when other countries of the world liberated France in 1944/45 at great cost to their young men’s lives and the Marshall Plan was in play; and Britain was extracting quickly from colonies including India; White Feather France was straight back to South East Asia and fighting Ho Chi Minh. Not very well. This lead to the Vietnam war in which more NZ troops died.

10 years after the fall of Saigon the French had its military personnel in NZ committing an act of war. Le Rainbow Warrior.
It has always been the enemy of NZ esp. with trade deals to Europe.
France is the pits for NZ (eg 1973 nuclear testing) in both war and peace. For most other countries actually.

Dumb as a bag of rocks Te Ururoa Flavell is a lost cause and was the same ability level as a Crown Minister that the COL exhibit today. It was the women who drove the Maori Party yet they can’t even speak on a Marae. If the staunch Maori males (who seldom stand tall against the baby killing ) shut up for a while they might learn something.

Dumbass Flavell might just stop his anti democracy crap (along with Phar Goff) and do something useful for ‘his people’ like stepping in over child killing.
Trump was elected under the electoral system that prevailed in the USA in 2016 and has done for a while.
Flavell lost last time he stood for election.
Flavell has time available now. What excuse does he have for not learning some facts?

While everyone is virtue signalling about climate change to increase their social standing and advance political agendas, real environmental issues are being ignored. If it is not linked to climate change it is far less likely to bring in the dollars and gets overlooked. The climate alarmists don’t care as they use it as a vehicle to advance their desire for social and political change.

The environmental movement is in crisis due to climate hysteria.

This article (National blasts ministers over ‘secretive’ dinner with Google at exclusive club) is interesting in two respects.

1. Chatham House rule

Google’s chief counsel, Kent Walker, hosted the dinner at the capital’s swanky Wellington Club for invited guests who included Justice Minister Andrew Little, Open Government Minister Clare Curran and top public servants and lawyers. … An invite sent to Little by Google’s chief lobbyist in Wellington, Ross Young, and released by Little under the OIA, said the June 21 dinner would be a “discussion under the Chatham House rule”, which bars people attending a meeting from saying who said what.

My understanding is that the Chatham House rule prevents people from saying who said what – but not what was said – in other words it’s a no-attribution rule. I’ll quote the exact rule from the Chatham House website:

When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.

2. Official Information Act

Little said in a letter sent in response to an Official Information Act request that he didn’t generate any notes or memos from the event. A spokeswoman for Curran said she hadn’t either.

Kiwiblog readers will know that I’m generally not a fan of Andrew Little and Claire Curran. But – assuming that the dinner discussion was of a general nature, didn’t involve any discussion of unannounced government policy, and didn’t involve any policy commitments or concessions on behalf of the Government – I don’t think they’re out of line. A Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet guideline (June 2017) states:

The definition of information is not confined to information on paper. … Although an official or Minister could be required, under the Act, to write down information not yet in a written form, this is simply a means of making that existing information accessible to others. There is no obligation to form an opinion or create information in order to respond to a request.

Having said that, given Labour’s criticism of National MPs who attended various corporate functions during their time in office, I think that Little and Curran shouldn’t have attended.

3. One last point

Australia’s competition head, ACCC chairman Richard Sims, is talking up the possibility of trying to rein back the market power of digital giants such as Google and Facebook

    Yes this is the reason why I don’t think electric cars will “take off”.
    Also, they are much cheaper to manufacture and maintain – far less moving parts.
    So the big manufacturers are keeping their price artificially high. And there will not be many parts sales in the future.

Someone ought to educate the Christchurch ratepayer funded organisation, ChristchurchNZ, on the difference between GDP and GDP per capita.

In an article in the Christchurch Press today , the ChristchurchNZ “programme manager,” Bree Loverich, reckons Canterbury needs to increase its population by a net 6500 a year to “maintain historic growth let along grow economically.”

This is the cargo-cult delusion that you merely need to bring people and the economy will magically grow. GDP will likely rise, but it’s GDP per capita that measures true economic growth, and by this measure NZ is at a standstill, and is likely to go backwards in the next year or two. This is because population growth is outrunning true economic growth, which would increase exports proportionally and expand infrastructure – roads, ports, hospitals, prisons, schools and so on – to cope with rising population. If GDP per capita were rising they would be comfortably financed.

The economic stupidity of ChristchurchNZ mirrors the stupidity of the Christchurch City Council, its sponsor. Look at the city’s attitude to its assets. Compare the performance of the port of Lyttelton with Port of Tauranga, narrowly majority owned by the Bay of Plenty regional environment authority. Consider Christchurch’s reluctance to leverage its assets with stock exchange-provided capital and thus expand their net value to the city.Think of the council’s secretive investment in jet-engine refurbishing.

If all the council can think of for economic growth is to flood the region with people, it is out to wreck the region. The sane goal is get the industry first, then recruit people. Fifty thousand people imported on the student visa rort will not create industry. There are only so many fast-food joints and petrol stations Canterbury can sustain. Face it, the international student industry exists largely by offering back door residency to young Asians – and while the back door to Australia remains open that includes entry to Australia. The international-student business generates barely any entrepreneurial start-ups that this export-reliant country needs.

Loverich’s strategy is for a future Christchurch like Bangladesh’s Dhaka rather than for a future like Singapore or a European or American equivalent.

I think it’s pretty much stagnant now, Rangitoto, after the big population surge of the last few years.

GDP per capita was flat in the latest quarter reported (March 2018), following an increase of just 0.1 percent in the December 2017 quarter. If the trend continues, it’s likely to fall.

  Many local bodies have promotional organisations like ChristchurchNZ. It would be interesting to know whether they are a worthwhile investment.
