        It seems it is very taboo in Polynesian cultures (where DV is most prevalent) to report such violence to the police.
        I met a P I women with 6 young kids who had left her husband for his violence.
        I asked her “why didn’t you just have him arrested”?

        Today that someone has debunked the myth that our early settlers didn’t have LGBT or whatevers before the coming of the Educated English person’s.
        
        A typical comment came from the 1970s vocal psychiatrist L. Gluckman, as quoted in Sexuality & the Stories of Indigenous People:
        
        “Homosexuality in both male and female was unknown in early New Zealand. Sexual perversion in the modern Māori is culturally determined by current social, economic and environmental pressures.”
        
        This was mainstream view – Māori were free of “perversions” until they were introduced by Europeans. But in the 1970s there was a challenge to that mainstream view.

  Rigel/Puanga is much more prominent in the early morning sky in mid-winter.

    A friend of mine lives in a city high-rise and there is no parking – he has to keep his car at his workplace (hospital) and get there by public transport. Until hiring a car when required becomes easy and cheap that is going to be a big problem in NZ, where public transport just doesn’t cover everything efficiently and never will.

  I expect the Kiwibuild ballot will allow for specific homes to be applied for. Then the ballot will be among those applying for those homes. Apart from anything else, bank pre approvals will be required before applying so some specifics will have to be provided to them.
  
  Over 25,000 people registered for updates, increasing rapidly. Fascinating to see how many end up applying, bank approval in hand. If most of them are hopeful applicants, most of them are going to be disappointed.

  Right SR those lined up in the ballot are only there to ensure the lass desirable houses are sold so the $2 billion pool can be recycled. The pick of the houses will be bought off the plans which is another option for buyers. Most people know the plan is more like a starting point and there are few houses completed without changes as well as most wanting “their” house to reflect them distinctly. That is more clearly shown in the finishing of the dwelling that may yet to prove the biggest disadvantage for balloted buyers. Just think back to the earlier intention of this scheme where Labour intended to not only dictate materials supply but bulk buy as well. A sort of fundamental Henry Ford production approach of having any colour as long as it is Black. Thus a new “benchmark” could be the quickest identification of a Kiwibuild house.     That is generally the start and finish times of the pupils school day but teachers do a lot of prep work etc and duties outside of those hours, sports teams etc. Well the teachers from my family did anyway. Agree about the holidays though.

    Allow me to put you and the other KBers right KiWombat on teachers’ hours. I have a family member who I drop off at school at 6.40am every morning and there are already other teachers’ cars in the carpark when I arrive. He is generally home by 6pm if there are no evening activities such as a Board or PTA meeting, parent/teacher interviews. He still has prep or marking to do at the weekends. Times have changed a lot since you were at school – mobile phones/email means that teachers are contactable by parents 24/7, mainstreaming means that kids suffering from autism etc are in the classroom fulltime and can be hugely disruptive. Kids have allergies that require classrooms to be kept totally free of nuts, dairy, eggs etc. And then there are a disproportionately large numbers of broken marriages which bring their own problems for kids. Good teachers spend a lot of time as social workers. Sure, twelve weeks paid holiday per year is a big plus but maybe a couple of weeks of that is spent on prep work.
    
    Yes, there are bad teachers just as there are bad doctors, bad accountants and bad bus drivers but the majority are good people who really care for their kids.
    
    A good teacher puts in 50 hours a week and top of the range salary is $73k per annum which gives an hourly rate of $28. I think most KBers earn more than that with half the angst.
    
    Oh, and just three union members at this particular school which is far from unusual. Less than 50% of teachers are union members.
    
    I have no doubt that I will earn myself a sea of down ticks – well so be it. I’m no union lover or lefty and it really pisses me off to see the amount of undeserved criticism that teachers get on KB. Where the fuck would you be without them?

      As an ex-DP, Syndicate Leader and full time teacher, I was “late” if I hadn’t arrived at school by 7am. After school I supervised traffic wardens and then came assorted meetings – staff, syndicate, parents sports practices, school choir, uke etc – and then I could do some follow-up work from the day and prep for the next day. If I was home by 6, that was early, but was always my aim.
      As for weekends and holidays – I was able to really catch up and prepare ahead.
      It is important to remember that teachers are paid an annual salary which is conveniently divided up into 26 lumps and paid fortnightly. Also, the school holidays are basically for the children, but are a valuable time for teachers to catch up and prepare ahead.

        I think that many of those critical of teachers had bad experiences in their own days at school or an unhappy childhood. They genuinely hated life at school and that has had an inter-generational negative effect on their own kids and a poor attitude towards their kid’s teachers.

        Teachers are great at anecdata, lists of stuff they do, how tough it all is, but their workload does not seem too onerous compared to other jobs and they get a lot of holidays.

      I knew a teacher who said much the same, but also others that were in and out, and did the minimum. Fortunately thanks the wonders of unions, we don’t have per-teacher evaluation based salary, so talking about the cream, needs to be taken in context of the rest.

At least in the primary sector NZEI does not permit the allocation of units to individuals. It is all about positions. The whole thing is like something out of the 1970 s.

      primary schools are open for 192 days per year, give or take.
      So a 50 hr week for the 38.5 weeks gives 1920 hrs.
      
      On a top of grade salary $73k gives $38 per hour.
      
      Your error was not looking at the actual teaching weeks of 38.5
      
      Thats counting highly industrious teachers doing 50 hr pw when the minimum time for most is closer to 40 hrs

      Teachers are educators, not therapists or psychologists which is what is required.
      
      Outcomes in the learning environment stem from the home. This outcome may be from relative poverty caused through poor economic decisions when choosing between cigarettes and lunch boxes or that Tarquin from Devonport is ‘special ‘ just because his parents can afford to buy a house in Devonport
      
      Teachers are are under recognised asset in our society and more than deserve the 16% they are asking for, my mother was a teacher, her partner and my partner were and are heads and deputy heads and I can vouch for the amount of time that goes into the prep that is required to make the school day appear seamless.
      
      I know that this forum has a general disparaging view of the teaching professionals but I am prepared for down ticking but I will always have their backs.

      My teacher mate was able to run a very good painting and paperhanging business whilst a teacher. He was careful to keep his turnover under $60,000 to preserve his GST free status.
      For many teachers work expands to fill the time available. Many teachers cannot comprehend that if you work 30 hours a week or 168 hours per week your pay stays the same. I am not sure I would want my grandchildren taught by a teacher that is so silly that they work 168 hours per week.

    Gazza, Much of what you say is true BUT how about we open the schools up to competition. i.e. give the kids vouchers and let them go where they want. Let the schools pay for the good ones and not so for the lazy and undolent.
    
    Was at a high School early this week quoting some work. Person I was conversing with is non teaching staff and he said to me “if I was in charge a lot of these lazy whinging lot would be here.”
    
    But becuase of the “rules of education we settle for second best with the good working like trojans and the other 80% filling in their day.

I attended a Family First Forum on the Family yesterday where Simon Bridges answer questions from Bob McCoskrie. While he left straight after the Q & A four National MPs attended and stayed at least for half the day. They were Maggie Barry, Alfred Ngaro, Melissa Lee and Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi.

I would guess that nearly everyone who attended will vote National. I just hope National does not take the conservative vote for granted.

In response to the pathetically childish Sadiq Khan supporting a giant Trump blimp flying over London when the US President visits the UK, a crowdfunder is underway to fly a nappy-clad baby Sadiq Khan at the same time. They’ve already reached the target of $20k and with 34 days to go, there could be a whole fleet of them flying over London in a massive show of support for Trump and loathing about Khan.

Of course, Khan is a Labour hack so integrity, consistency and honesty are way outside of his toolbox so he may just show us all again what hypocrites the left are and allow the anti-Trump balloon at the same time as banning the anti-Sadiq.

The left so hate it when they’re own childish tactics are used against them.

    I will never forget my one and only visit to Harrods, just under three years ago. It was a Sunday afternoon, the store was packed, and there were more burqa-clad women per square metre than you’d see in any Islamic city. The one positive was that She Who Must Be Obeyed felt so claustrophobic in Harrods that we left the store without my wallet coming out to pay any of their over-inflated prices 😀

Why am I not surprised. I believe the sewer infrastructure in Welly is grossly neglected. Being depreciated in the books but never any capital reinvested in the infrastructure is the way to hide the need for reinvestment. Instead diverting rates income to frufru touchy feely capital projects. You know, like libraries and art galleries. Stadiums for politicians. Still. However most people would rather take a shit in confidence and without emptying their wallet than go see Ed Sheeran at some new waterfront stadium. Right?

Today, I have made a decision.

No matter how obnoxious, unpalatable or disagreeable I find a post, I will never downtick that post.

I would like to believe that the antidote to statements we do not like, is to engage the speaker or author. No to insult, downgrade, deplatform or in any other way, deny that persons right to freely express that view.

Yesterday we saw Phil Goff deny a venue to a speaker, simply because he does not wish that voice to be heard.

Phil, Is your viewpoint so fragile that it cannot stand up to a counterpoint? Is multiculturalism so powerless that the expression of concerns about the changes it forces onto society must be silenced rather than addressed?

To the Muslim Community, is your faith so fragile that a contrary view being expressed must be denied at all costs, rather than listened to?

When faiths and cultures collide, there will be conflict. The answer is to allow that debate and listen to all sides. Yesterday, Goff made the problem worse, and our country more tribal.

I promise not to fall into this trap. Listen to what is being said, and provide a counter argument. This is the General Debate thread.

Lets debate, discuss, open our minds to the contrary position, and let the position stand or fall on its own merits, and not our preconceptions.

I feel like I have woken up in a country that is less free this morning, where those in authority now believe they have the obligation to silence dissent for the sake of public order.

This is the thin edge of a very dangerous wedge.

    However, there are elements of Islamic Faith which are incompatible with Current Western Values. The status of women within Muslim Society, the capital punishments for faith based offences such as apostasy, the killing of homosexuals by throwing them off buildings. The stoning of adulterous women. The shooting of girls for having the temerity of advocating education for themselves. The beating of people who have crossed the religious police by such terrible actions such as dancing, or listening to music, or practicing a religion that is different.
    
    Islam seems to be the only great religion that cannot listen to criticism and will not accept it.
    
    If we look at the Christian Church, and its changing positions over the centuries, we see an organization that used to burn people at the stake and torture individuals over their beliefs, now become a force for acceptance and compassion.
    
    In many ways, Islam is going through it’s Spanish Inquisition phase. It needs it’s own reformation, which cannot happen until it accepts the criticism it desperately needs. We have an obligation to help. Ironically, it’s the Christian thing to do.

        I said that “There are ELEMENTS of Islamic Faith that are incompatible” and went on to list those.
        
        My point is, the Islamic Faith, and particularly those practitioners based in this country, have now successfully lobbied authorities to de-platform a speaker who is critical of their own faith.
        
        I personally have no problems with anyone who practices the Islamic Faith, but when I see the pain and suffering that faith brings, and mostly upon it’s OWN PEOPLE, do I stay silent, or do I speak up?
        
        When the Imams who preach hate are not silenced, but those outside the Islam who question it are, what message do we send to those within Islam who wish to bring the reform that we secular people now enjoy?

You can’t make this stuff up

So a sculpture was removed from a park on the Kapiti Coast because it was discovered that the artist was a pedophile.

So they commissioned a replacement work of art to replace the kiddie fiddler’s work.

The “Kiwiriders” replacement sculpture is supposed to be of two children riding on a stylised* Kiwi. The only problem was a local advisory art board took one look at it and decided it looked like children riding on a spermatazoa! Of course, bearing in mind the previous issue with the earlier statue and the association with child abuse – the art advisory board suggested that the sculpture was not appropriate and told the morons at Kapiti Council to not dig the whole any deeper.

The artist, being a creative type, got his panties all severely twisted and complained to the council who have ignored their own art advisory board and they’ve ‘mounted’ the statue of two children riding on a spermatazoa in some local park.

Local government is broken.

(I understand that in the art world the word “stylised” actually means “nothing like” or “an excuse for trying to get away with something pervy”.)

Her statement wasn’t about an aspiration goal, it was a black and white statement of intent to sexually discriminate.       She is arguing for valuable development rights to be added into LINZ’s calculation of the value of the land.
      When the land is only valued on it’s pastoral wealth and not it’s potential value after subdivision, the NZ taxpayer misses out on the true value of the land sale.
      
      There are numerous other problems with the High country land-tenure process….
      I’ve mainly followed the concerns with ecosystem protection…

  Funnily enough, I came a family discussing rising prices while I was shopping last Saturday. Mum and Dad couldn’t explain it, and asked me if I knew. I explained that the largest factor in the price was the government. It clips the ticket at every stage, throws in petrol tax during every stage of the distribution process, and adds GST on the final product. I also pointed out that if the government’s decisions cause the dollar to fall, the resulting effect on the price of petrol makes the situation worse.
  
  I finished by noting that billions of dollars for free first year at university and aid for the South Pacific had caused the problem. “Blame Jacinda Ardern!”, I said.

      RF I thought that also until yesterday when I recieved a NZ HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES letter from the PM with her ugly dial in the top right hand corner of it. What I object to is this letter has obviously been sent to me with my details taken from my superannuation records as it is telling me all the policy that Labour made in the 2018 budget. If this letter had been just to inform me of the heating Grant it would be fine but as a National voter and supporter I take offence at their blatant politicking and the use of my details from my Pension.

Does anyone else find it funny that Winston is now trying to change his agenda on NZ First with Barry Soper penning a column saying people who think this is last term as a MP think again. Then we have the Maori seat issue raising it head again after a Labour MP’s bill was drawn in Parliament and Winston refusing to back it unless it gets a two -pronged Referndum of entrenched or go altogether. So Winston has now the chance to redeem himself after his broken promise to those that voted that Winston promised if they became part of the Government. The thing about this and Winston latest grab for attention is that with Shane Jones being Winstons pick to take over from him and the very thin chance of NZ First being able to survive the next Elections in the last few polls we have a change in strategy with policy and his press mouth piece informing the public Winston will be a MP after the next Election. Again we see Winston taking the voter for granted because he believe if he is there so will those be who have voted for him in the past.

    If you read the same article I did on Fairfax, it turns out the “denied a visa” line is just journalistic exaggeration.
    
    The actuality is she doesn’t qualify for an automatic visa (as Canadian citizens do) because she has been denied a visa to the UK in the past.
    
    This is the system working correctly: NZ should very much be forcing anyone denied a visa for a friendly country to apply for a visa to visit ours so we can check into their background a little more thoroughly.

I’m in two minds about Lauren Southern.

Personally I think she’s a vacuous moron jumping on a bandwagon, and I really enjoyed the marvelous Thunderf00t exposing her bullshit.

On one hand I respect her right to free speech. On the other I don’t think she adds anything of value to our national conversation in a Kiwi context and I don’t like to see someone manufacture controversy in NZ purely to promote her personal brand.

I would have been inclined to support her because of the hypocrites in the Labour party de-platforming her but then the odious Shabbes goy WhaleOil came out in support for her. In my opinion both sides arguing this issue are fairly equally contemptible.

Ron Mark has sniffed the Global Warming cocaine, and is now a proponent of the religion.

In the Otago Daily Times today (and presumably in the Hooerald) Mark is talking to Audrey Young about the patrol ship Otago nearly capsizing in 20m waves in the Southern Ocean.

Mark says the waves were the result of climate change, “which would affect the types of ships New Zealand needed in future.”

Mark had praise for the skill and performance of the Otago’s captain – Lieutenant-Commander Lorna Gray, who was on her first trip to the Southern Ocean.

Rather than Global Warming, it might be appropriate to re-examine the design of the patrol ship. It seems the Navy didn’t think hull strengthening for ice was necessary.

Marks says the Otago has had to ask fishing vessels to come out of the ice for checks, rather than being able to go into the ice after them.

    The Irish ships, whose design they follow, serve in the North Atlantic in winter, but I doubt they are designed to go into Arctic ice. The NZ ships were built in Australia.
    
    The best place to get ships like this is Norway. Suitable Norwegian-designed and built patrol ships would be dearer, but it’s the old story, buy cheap and pay more in the long run.

As expected Radio New Zealand have found a Muslim foot soldier named Saziah Bashir who writes on issues of “social justice,gender and race” to do a piece justifying why free speech or hate speech as she spins it is not good for Muslims and why Lauren Southern should be banned.
She wheels out all the same arguments including the statement “Her views and her actions are actually physically and emotionally harmful”.
So in other words nobody should be able to say anything in case you have a big cry about it as you are very delicate.
Well toughen the fuck up love because that’s what free speech is about and if you don’t like that then maybe New Zealand is not the place for you.

    Funny moment or two this morning though, when even Kim Hill had to bring forward a few arguments for the Children’s Commissioner to struggle against. He was so extreme that she did read out a few texts by listeners who thought he was far too Left on his ideas about poverty and parental responsibility.
    
    But no fear, in essence Red Radio is with him all the way: inter-generational poverty causes difficulty making good decisions about drugs, when to have children, who to have them with, so it’s not really people’s own responsibility; poverty includes lowish incomes (not just material poverty); parents turning up for free school breakfasts proves they are needy; giving people more money is a good idea because stats prove that people spend it on their children; many men are in prison because they had foetal alcohol syndrome, and some criminal men have such childish, undeveloped brains that they need to be judged as children, not adults.
    
    And not a word, ever, about ways to discourage people from having children when they are in crappy situations and should not have them!
