Anyone else having trouble meeting identification requirements that the Government has imposed on banks’ sharebrokers, lawyers, accountants etc. Many people have drivers licence or passport so often no trouble there. However ‘proof of address’ is tricky nowadays as most utility bills, tax stuff etc is sent electronically especially if people take a responsible attitude and want to save trees. So it can be rather tricky to produce ‘proof of address’ and furthermore different outfits interpret the requirement differently. Seems printing off an electronic invoice as proof is not acceptable. Also Kiwibank will not accept its own bank statement as proof of address. Seems that they are too scared stiff of upsetting the authorities. Seems drastic measures are needed such as speeding past a speed camera so you can produce the infringement notice as proof of address.
About time that Jacinda asked officials for a conversation about this.

  We had to go into a bank branch to get a signed confirmation of our account and address to send to the broker. The bank staff are obviously used to the need for it.

  This is a particular problem in rural areas where there is no delivery. NZ post does give you a free PO box at the nearest location, but then when you have papers delivered to a PO box which is often not accepted as proof of address, you strike this problem.
  
  This problem is compounded when companies (or government departments) insist on mailing to a physical address, and then mail can be returned to them marked ‘Not A Delivery Address’
  
  Vicious cycle unfortunately !
  
  On a couple of occasions I have resorted to giving map co-ordinates rather than a physical address. This stuffs up the system so bad that they generally accept a PO box address rather than have to change their system to accept map co-ordinates !

  Our clients are having issues with these requirements.
  The AML requirements do not seem to acknowledge the realities of life in today world where things are done on digital platforms.
  DIA seem to be intent on forcing round pegs into square holes.
  It will be fun watching land agents and high value dealers implement the AML rules next year. When i talk to land agents about AML they all start moaning on mass.

  New bank couldn’t accept short-form version of power bill as it didn’t show an address, but were OK with click-through to full version, which I downloaded and emailed on the spot. Bigger problem was ‘source of wealth’ for goodness sake. I was transferring a term deposit from one bank to another, partial proceeds of a house sale. They required all documents to be certified by a JP (including S&P agreement). The sale was 18 months ago – I wonder how often I can re-use it! All related to money-laundering apparently.

  But peterwn it is even a bigger challenge to establish your credentials with any Government department as they are now behind the Real Me wall. Then after getting along to a specific location with all your proof they still have that ridiculous one time password texting system. It is even a bigger nightmare for any Kiwi’s living off shore since their only means of contacting them is by telephone. We all know how efficiently calls to such departments go as so much time is chewed up waiting and being audibly assaulted with crap music.
  However security is becoming a very serious issue in the electronic age as we see that attempted security breeches are counted by the quantity per second. It will not really improve untill they actually catch up with the times and start employing the modern means of ID instead of using yesterdays technology. Even my new camera has facial recognition built in so it can be told who to look for in a group and find/snap them instantly in focus where ever they move in that group.

  Yes, getting confirmation of identity to close a qualifying Kiwisaver account is a bloody time wasting exercise in tail-chasing. All documents required need JP witnessing, and like you said, proof of residence address is the hardest to achieve to their satisfaction. After my second attempt, they agreed to accept a pdf printout directly from the on-line bank account that the funds were to be paid into. Apparently with the correct headers and footers in the printout they were satisfied the residential address on it was acceptable. My case was admittedly a bit compromised as I wasn’t mobile at the time, so getting an actual printout from the bank was harder than usual.

  Nonsense , I doubt any paper is produced from Amazonian rainforest trees these days. And the banks are simply saving themselves money by forcing you the punter to go electronic , and they are hiding behind care for the environment.

    FWIW: Several years ago a relative died, effectively destitute and without a will. He did however have a bank account (the bank will remain anonymous) with only a very small amount in it. Somehow we wound up looking after the final dissolution of what little he owned; his ‘Estate’ if you will. The time came to close the account. Oh dear! The deceased had lived for many years in another city and the difficulties we encountered as we went around and around in small circles to close this single account and obtain the minute sum within it, had to be experienced to be believed. The matter went on and on and was only finally solved (after six months), when the bank’s highly exasperated local manager used his discretion and closed it for us with immediate effect, and with a comment to the effect that he would take responsibility for whatever eventuated. Nothing happened afterwards as far as we know, but after six months we were just a tad pleased that it was all over. Beuracracy isn’t a Government-only preserve; the banks are also
    well practiced in its application…

      Someone when dealing with a deceased estate was asked the deceased’s address and replied ‘plot 1234, xxx street’. ‘That is the town cemetery came the reply’. ‘I told you he had died’.

  Isn’t it wonderful to live in a free country, mandatory identification everywhere. Now in the states there will be airport style security for I believe it was LA trains…
  
  Its voluntary like id disclosures to banks, you just cant use a bank without disclosing ID and you cant get a cell phone plan and internet and get paid for work and stuff without a bank account. Nor will you be able to go through security to board the train if you don’t ‘volunteer’….
  
  Also income tax is the US is ‘voluntary’ too… Whatever that means….

  It has become a major issue, and I can only see the problem escalating.
  
  A lawyer can not draw up a “power of attorney” for an elderly person, with out approved photo ID. The lawyer had done work for the client for decades.
  The drivers licence had long expired, as also the passport.
  
  The person is bedridden, and very difficult to even put in a vehicle.
  The approved photo people will not come out to take the approved photos.
  
  Next problem was to get a birth certificate to go with the photos to obtain an R18 card ID. That is for a 90 year old.
  However to apply for a birth certificate, you are supposed to have verification etc.
  
  I told the lawyer, for her to file for it, and any other ratification. She was doubtful it would work, but it slipped through, so now birth certificate received.
  
  Lesson learned, never let any ID photo system expire, or get it changed over to the R18 card.
  
  The smile I have is that the rest home now wants a direct debit system, but I told them then, it was impossible, as the money must stay in the bank, as no authority can gain access. 🙂
  OK , I do right them a cheque, but they sound very peeved off, and hope I will be reimbursed later, or social welfare people will be getting alot of visits from me!

  The danger with that strategy is that their are many flavors of feminism. If you express support for the wrong one you’re likely in for an ear-bashing.
  
  To pick one example; women working in a Hooters type establishment (or any other sort of promo work based on sex appeal), is this empowering women and to be encouraged or sexist objectification that must be stopped? Both views have supporters among self-described feminists.

        Sure will do KevOB as we see by the freeze on MP’s wages the SHE does not think is fair as it widens the gap. It requires more urgent legislation even to get the freeze in place but that just to be the norm. We hasten to wonder just how truly silly this silly little girl be? Like their car-park puddle talent pool depth her reasoning and excuses are even shallower.
        Disregarding what one thinks of MP’s pay levels are there is a system in place for annual review with it being based on public service increases they have already received. Thus retrospective. If in fact there is any argument for it only being reviewed every 3 years we are yet to hear it as her reasoning offered is as meaningful as her statement she does not lie. Interfering in the process is in the same bracket as hindering free speech unless approved by the COL. If this fails to see some hard questions OQT we will be very surprised as she has set herself above all including the established process. As with Captains calls so far.

Teachers and their unions need to stop whingeing about their jobs. Seriously, nowhere else on the planet does a profession have 12-14 holiday weeks a year. If you have to do some work in those holidays – woolly-boolly – you still have huge choices about how you go about that while in Fiji or Bali.

Stop complaining about the greatest job in the world: working with young people for the good of their future. Have teachers even considered that the children might be just a little upset that they are regarded as a burden and a chore, and that the normal things that go with teaching require a little extra work? How on earth does all this moaning and complaining inspire the next generation into this amazing career? It doesn’t. The unions are making it embarrassing to want to be a teacher.

Schools and principals need far more employment choice to meet their local needs. I was stunned when former PPTA president Angela Roberts stated to the world that “of course South Auckland Middle School is successful, it is bulk-funded” when the unions have made it game priority No 1 to stop schools from having this opportunity. Give teachers the ability to negotiate their own pay and conditions – they are big boys and girls – and let principals and boards make some genuine resourcing decisions.

The current approach risks setting education back 20 years at a time when our comparative achievements on the international stage are in steep decline. Some rapid and altruistic reconsideration of many of these things is required.

      But RF we have to laugh at the PR job the police are trying to run as they tell the regions ow many new police will be added to their region. The if we dare to read past the headline we find it will be over a 5 year period. The local Media parties echo chambers are pushing how many totally without challenge. Nelson will get 55 they say? That is an average of 11 each year over 5 years which will barely cover the attrition rate. Best nobody hold their breath while waiting to see a bobby on the beat near them soon.

      and stop 1,500 leaving.
      It has been decided where they will go but where are they coming from.
      Don’t know who would like to be a Police person today in New Zealand. Many recruited in recent years have left after 3/4 years fed up being racially handcuffed in every thing they do.

  Well said! I couldn’t agree more. Let’s not forget that teachers of senior high school classes are effectively on leave from early November when their students go on study leave so they have virtually three months right there apart from the other holidays. Who else gets that? It has long been my belief that no one gets accepted to train as a teacher until they have worked in the real world. I’m pretty sure their martyrdom act would soon change when the reality of other people’s lives hits home. Unfortunately they live in an echoing bubble.

  Yep, everyone’s jobs are difficult. Everyone thinks they’re underpaid. Everyone thinks they’re under-resourced. The difference being is that I can work hard and get a promotion, or if that is failing to come, another in the market will be in demand of my skills and pay for it. Unless I’m unwilling to put the effort in, in which case I can either accept what I get or become a teacher and get paid more based on how long I’ve been a teacher for!

      Not all teach well, and with P babies coming through the system, teachers need more training, the bright kids will self teach, the problem children will demand all of the attention and the average pupil will not reach their potential, so it has always been but the percentage of children with issues are on the up.
      Is mainstreaming really okay for everyone, teachers included?

  Teachers’ biggest problem is that they insist on not having any performance metrics.
  
  That means anyone that is any good, and likely deserves a raise, is being held back by the dead wood.
  
  No industry/workplace can survive that.
  
  The end result is that anyone with gumption and competence eventually leaves (or has the sense to never get into teaching in the first place).
  
  All that is left is the log-jam of dead wood bleating about 9-3 for 35 weeks a year being a hard job.

    Measuring learning is essential, whether linked to pay or not. You need to know which teaching methods are working and which are not, without just relying on feelings and anecdotes.
    
    But I would say the biggest problem for teacher pay is the funding method. Unlike just about every other good or service, there are few ways for parents to buy extra or better education for their children. If they could, most of that spending would end up in the pockets of teachers.

    Teachers have no problems, their top pay is 82k (including one extra credit), the median wage is about 48k, they work 5 hours a day, 40 weeks a year vs 8 hours a day and 48 weeks a year for a regular worker. Their hourly pay is 3x the median…
    
    If they worked a standard working year their pay would be 157K. That would put them right at the top in terms of most well remunerated professions.
    
    Even better are the perks, you can’t get fired, flexible time off (schools let teachers take their holiday leave whenever), and if you are a college teacher that is specialized then you are going to have periods/days off…
    
    So your hours worked will be less, effective pay higher…. Oh and did I mention you get paid the same regardless of how shit you are at your job!

  My local Estate Agent tells me that when a certain type of houses comes to the market they have a few numbers ready to call as these purchasers are looking for rental houses.
  For some years they have been Teachers (usually a couple – both Teachers of sorts)- for which I have no problem as they are looking to their pensions.
  Some own a large number however and spend their holidays doing up for renting or resale.
  Suits the Agents as Rental Managers or Selling Agents.

    Also taking the top pay for a teacher (based on length of tenure so very attainable) and adding in one additional credit you get a pay of 82K which is about 80NZD a hour.
    
    If teachers worked a full standard year, 48 weeks vs 40 and 8 hours a day vs 5 then they would be paid 160K a year… Similar to an MP… Half that as a CEO of a company in NZ….
    
    Their hourly pay is between 3x and 4x the median. They get paid comparably to top tier lawyers/accountants and project managers… They get paid similarly to quantity surveyors, engineers and top tier software programmers…
    
    Yet many teachers teach what is called ‘ABCs’ and ‘Counting’, some teach harder subjects like ‘running around’ and ‘face-painting’ or ‘drama’…. I think anyone who has had any experience with children know they don’t need to be ‘taught’ to so called ‘run around’ or ‘create drama…

  I think anyone would admit that teachers have a very tough job and are on the whole underpaid. But the issue I have is that the unions refuse to even consider the possibility of paying the good teachers more, that is where my sympathy runs out. We are losing the best teachers from the classroom because of this narrow minded view.

1: To keep the bad people out of circulation so they cannot harm anyone

2: To punish the bad people on behalf of the society they have damaged

and a distant 3: To provide rehabilitation.

Kiwis may be stupid but these days you would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t been robbed of a car or the contents of a house, or had someone in their wider family bashed, conned or even worse.

Ergo, we want these rock apes punished and held in detention.

  The problem is they are all refusing to deal with the source of crime properly.
  I applaud more emphasis on mental health but the gangs and P addiction are the bulk issues here. These two problems are closely linked and directly associated with the rise of violent crime.
  Addicts don’t give a shit who they bash, so long as they can attain more P to fuel their addiction. The gangs are the enablers of the P distribution and violent turf wars etc ensue.
  So until these ‘reformers’ stop talking unicorns and rainbows and actual do something to outlaw the gangs and deal with P addicted drop kick parents, nothing much will change.

Because given Princess is paid $471k plus perks, lurks and other sundry bits giving her a package in excess of $500k, and given she has made a few captain’s call over the past 10 months, had maternity leave and had more recess time than john or joanne average get holiday, you seriously have to question the productivity of New Zealand’s MPs And do we get value for money!

Heard the Condescending Tone of the Peters selected PM Ardern on turning down a 3% wage increase. A message to others in NZ struggling to get a decent wage increase. What a struggle for Ardern who is basking in an income of circa $500,000 Thousand Dollars.
Next time the increase will probably be backdated and a 6% catch up will be in order.

      I saw an English-language stage performance of a drama involving Korean and Japanese conflict once. In the play, all the Korean characters had Irish accents. The Tokyo Japanese had posh-sounding west-end London accents, while those from Osaka had Yorkshire accents. It kind of captured the mood pretty well. The PM is interfering in their work and the right of members to be paid what the Authority decides.

The Authority may have to consider actual individual MP ability when setting pay rates not just expected competency rates.

  Words are merely symbols for underlying concepts. If there is no concept of “condescension” (as the concept exists in English) then there will be no word for it in another language.
  Some people believe that you can eliminate a concept by banning the words that symbolize that concept. What happens is that people invent new words to once again represent those concepts.
  Thus, “crippled” was replaced by “handicapped” which in turn was replaced by “disabled.”
  
  When “disabled” falls out of fashion, as it inevitably will, what new term will replace it?

    Close to home, pre-colonisation Maori didn’t have words that distinguished blue and green. One word served both. Similarly, in English we have one word for blue when Russians see two colours. They have one word for light blue, and another for dark blue.
    
    The 19th century British Prime Minister, Gladstone, a classics scholar, famously showed that the Ancient Greeks’ concepts or descriptions of colour differed from modern people’s colour concepts or descriptions.
    
    The Ancient Greeks, like Maori, didn’t have a word for blue. Moderns were long confused by Homer’s description of the “wine red sea”.
    
    The question is, Odakyu-sen, whether people have the word for the underlying concept, or whether the word helps them define the concept – in this case moulds their conception of the colour spectrum. I’m sure modern Maori distinguish blue from green, and modern Greeks distinguish their blue sea from the colour red.

    There’s a lot of bullshit floating about wrt South African History on both extremes of the spectrum. Let’s clear a few points up.
    
    Thus far the area which has seen this forced appropriation is the Limpopo province just south of Zimbabwe.
    
    South Africa – all areas – had been lived in before both the backs and the whites arrived. The whole area had been inhabited by the Khoi San people.
    
    Of course “inhabited” is a very loose term. Most of these areas were not settled and maybe saw a wandering clan of people through them once in a while, so not really “inhabited”” in the true sense of the word.
    
    When the Bantu (Black) people arrived, they took over the better areas of land. If you hop onto Google maps and look at the satellite view, it is pretty easy to see which areas these are: the green areas on the Eastern side of the country and a bit just South of Zimbabwe (Limpopo/Northern Transvaal). Their crops did not grow in the deserts or South of the Fish river, so they didn’t go there.
    
    Apart from Limpopo area (which was really one tier down in desirability), most of those desirable areas have been under continuous black ownership and has never been owned by white people.
    
    Even the majority of the Limpopo region is still under black ownership.
    
    In the early 1800s there was a period known as the Mfecane when the Zulu went on a murdering spree, killing about half of the South African population at the time and driving people away from their lands. This had a ripple effect all the way up into Zambia etc.
    
    The boers had their “Great Trek” just after the Mfecane and many of the areas that had been inhabited were now deserted or significantly purged of population, but mostly they took over lands that had never been settled. This included some of the Limpopo area.
    
    In areas like Limpopo, still reeling from the Mfecane, the inhabitants would have likely been happy to have the boers arrive with their guns and give them some protection from the Zulu. [I am sure many Maori would have appreciated the stability brought by British too.]
    
    Limpopo is perhaps the only area in South Africa where there might be some reasonable claims that black people had their land stolen. However, much of that land was either bought or not occupied when the boers arrived .
    
    No matter what history says, unfortunately the modern narrative is very different and hostile and – as anyone could see for decades – it’s going to turn into a huge mess.

This has blown up in the last month in the USA with Cardinal Theodore McCarrick being exposed as a homosexual abuser of young men and vulnerable seminarians for the past five decades, which have been covered up by some other bishops, and there will be many more heads to roll – possibly 2 more cardinals, and several bishops.
  This is a huge scandal, and the faithful Catholics in the USA and elsewhere are outraged that these leaders have betrayed not only their priestly vows but also the vulnerable youth, and the people themselves. You can be sure that there will be a cleanout of these filthy homosexuals and those who have protected/supported them.
  Good on the USA Catholics who are calling out the deviants among the hierarchy. The trouble is, the majority of the priests and bishops are good men faithful to their vows and the Church. But these scum have brought the entire Church into disrepute.

Jacinda Ardern sounded like a populist dictator yesterday ruling out pay rises for MPs.

I used to have a bit to do with the family of one National MP. It was an eye opener the stress the families live under. MP husband away a lot missing out on family and children growing up. A normalised threat of violence and death threats for the MP and the family. Bricks thrown through windows etc.

I wouldn’t touch that job even for $300K.

Given the increase in the size of the executive under this coalition, I wonder what the % increase in total cost to the taxpayer is, regardless of the salary freeze.
With so many ministers, associate ministers, and extra ministries, perhaps the Opposition could do the research to discover the actual salary increase for the total executive, even before the various commissions etc to tell them what to do.

Out of 40 developed nations, New Zealand has the second highest spending on primary-thru-post-primary education.

We don’t need to spend more on education. We do need to get better value from our current spend.

How Pro Sports Became Part of the U.S. Military’s War Machine

As long as I can remember, I’ve been a sports fan. As long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in the military. Until recently, I experienced those as two separate and distinct worlds. While I was in the military – I served for 20 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force – I did, of course, play sports. As a young lieutenant, I was in a racquetball tournament at my base in Colorado. At Squadron Officer School in Alabama, I took part in volleyball and flickerball (a bizarre Air Force sport). At the Air Force Academy, I was on a softball team and when we finally won a game, all of us signed the ball. I also enjoyed being in a military bowling league. I even had my own ball with my name engraved on it.

Don’t misunderstand me. I was never particularly skilled at any sport, but I did thoroughly enjoy playing partly because it was such a welcome break from work – a reprieve from wearing a uniform, saluting, following orders, and all the rest. Sports were sports. Military service was military service. And never the twain shall meet.

Since 9/11, however, sports and the military have become increasingly fused in this country. Professional athletes now consider it perfectly natural to don uniforms that feature camouflage patterns. (They do this, teams say, as a form of “military appreciation.”) Indeed, for only $39.99 you, too, can buy your own Major League Baseball-sanctioned camo cap at MLB’s official site. And then, of course, you can use that cap in any stadium to shade your eyes as you watch flyovers, parades, reunions of service members returning from our country’s war zones and their families, and a multitude of other increasingly militarized ceremonies that celebrate both veterans and troops in uniform at sports stadiums across what, in the post-9/11 years, has come to be known as “the homeland.”

These days, you can hardly miss moments when, for instance, playing fields are covered with gigantic American flags, often unfurled and held either by scores of military personnel or civilian defense contractors.     Strangely enough, it was by personal experience back when Brazil was in similar circumstances. The head man at our office in San Paulo demonstrated on a trip to the airport, about 55 minutes. When I arrived at the airport the driver radioed in the meter reading and the dispatcher advised him of the exchange rate for the meter which was updated every 10 minutes.

There was an article in this morning’s Herald website about shots being fired at surfers in the water near a spit several km down the coast from Kawhia.
The Herald didn’t say who the shooter might be, but stated that it was someone local, who had a very strong sense of “this is our land and sea coast” and would think nothing of killing someone over this belief.
Who in this day and age would harbor such feelings and what kind of a community would encourage such a mindset?

From Starboard’s Maori in the News segment: Car club member says visiting Taharoa was frightening and intimidating

A club member, who did not want to be named, said about 10 classic cars and their owners were parked on the public road leading to the Taharoa Ironsands mine on April 7, reading a sign with the history of the town when two men approached and started swearing at them. The site is opposite the lookout.

“The next thing these Māori fellas come out with the guns and say ‘you better piss off, we will shoot the lot of you and wreck your cars’.”

The classic car club member said he then looked about 150m above him on the hill and saw a group of four men standing in the bush holding guns.

“We could see them with rifles or guns – it was hard to see from that range. They were really threatening saying, ‘get out of here, get out of here – we will smash your cars, we will shoot you. So we did what they said and shot through’.”

No time to negotiate a peace treaty then.

Who remembers the “Urewera four” – who were accused of being the ringleaders of the group that set up camps and engaged in “military-style” activities – training to kill for their cause of Maori governance of the Tuhoe region?

…. Police are looking into sexual assault allegations by a young actor against Italian actor Asia Argento — one of the most prominent activists of the#MeToo movement.

Captain Darren Harris from the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department said investigators will seek to talk to Jimmy Bennett or his representatives about the alleged incident at a Southern California hotel in 2013, when Bennett was 17. The move comes in response to a New York Times story alleging Argento settled a legal notice of intent to sue filed by Bennett for $380,000 shortly after she said in October last year that Harvey Weinstein raped her.
Argento and Bennett co-starred in a 2004 film called The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things in which Argento played Bennett’s prostitute mother.
Bennett said in the notice that he had sex with Argento in the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Marina del Rey, California, in 2013. The age of consent in California is 18. The notice claimed the encounter traumatised Bennett and hurt his career, the Times reported. Investigators have learned no police report was filed at the time, Harris said.

The newspaper said it received court documents that included a selfie of Argento and Bennett in bed. Three people familiar with the case said the documents were authentic, the Times reported.

      Thanks, Nostra. It’s all coming back now. Actually, after a bit of toing and froing, Ugly Truth was big enough to admit that the ‘International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State’ was not a valid organ of the international justice system (it’s one crank’s blog).
