I think opposing this Manning character from coming to New Zealand may actually be smart politics.

Take a dispassionate look at the guy (because Chelsea is male, remember, it’s to do with chromosomes).

The vast majority of kiwis would instinctively flinch at the sight of him. That is indisputable.

Those are the people National wants to continue to identify with as they make up by far the largest pool of voters; normal people. I don’t think this is about free speech at all, it’s about identification.

    National are our most liberal viable party. They need to play to their strengths: Sensible governance, prudent financially, not nanny state, self reliance mixed with compassion.

        Free speech isn’t about deciding “what is of interest to the majority of NZers” nor about whether you approve of transgenderism. Lauren Southern , Jordan Peterson, isn’t of interest to the majority of NZers, they should still should get to say their piece. If people want to go that is their individual choice. The only possible argument is that she is a felon and therefore not entitled via immigration laws. But if she is not a risk to security then let her speak.

    She probably has a lot of interesting stories about her time in the army and in Middle east, by her accounts it was a pretty horrible time, shades of full metal jacket. Also what motivated her crimes. The fallout, early days of Wikileaks, how she went about doing what she did. Lots of stuff that would be interesting regardless of how you judge her actions (I personally think she’s an unredeemed criminal).

    It’s no wonder there is low business confidence.
    We have a government that wants to regulate everything including whether or not you can have a plastic bag at the supermarket. We have a government that has without any consultation shut down the oil and gas industry for the future.
    We have a government that spends like a drunken sailor on shore leave.
    We know this government wants to raise taxes to pay for all their spending and the fuel taxes in Auckland are only the first installment of many new taxes.
    
    So higher taxes, more government spending, more regulation, shutting down the energy sector. That’s the Obama model that gave the USA the worst and slowest economic recovery ever.
    Now the new administration is cutting taxes, freeing up the energy sector and cutting burdensome regulations. And the US economy is booming and record low unemployment.
    
    We are following the good leftist Obama and we will reap what we are sowing. I cannot see anything but recession under the leftist progressives that sadly are governing us.

  I heard at bowls yesterday that there could be increasing support for Peters to take over as Prime Minister.
  Opinion recons that he made a good job of his time as Prime Minister when our Princess was away.
  Having listened to Peters’s Prime Minister’s gobby pontificating, saying sweet f.a. yesterday to big business left me again with a most uncomfortable feeling that it can only get worse and quickly.
  New Zealand has tens of thousands of small businesses who were not involved in the talkfest.
  That Luxton is heading up this new conversation is interesting in that he is a direct Government employee who recently took on Andrew Kirton (ex Labour Party Gen Sec ?).
  Robertson alluded this morning to the fact that he had been talking to Luxton for some time. Does that suggest that Luxton was told to take on Kirton – maybe being seconded to the conversation to ensure it does what Robertson wants and keep an eye on Luxton.
  Machiavelli Peters is grinning I am sure along with Shane Jones – who openly has no time for Cindy or Robertson.

Chelsea Manning is what the ordinary Joe would call a weirdo. Joe doesn’t give a shit about what Chelsea did. The ordinary National voter would not like to see their representatives siding with a total freak like Chelsea.

National simply cannot carry on trying to be all things to all people.

  Duggledog, while I accept that given here’s and her colleagues’ lack of business experience she needs help from industry advisors with experience. What I find annoying is her and Robbo telling us all they are transitioning the economy and are taking action with big decisions, why? And where do they think we need to transition to?. While in the next breath telling us the economy is doing fine with good growth and low unemployment. None which is because of the actions/decisions of the CoL.
  If anything, the economy has held up remarkably well given the lack of action in some areas and the poor decision making in other areas e.g. oil & gas industry exploration closure, fuel costs up 25% since the election (Woods once again sitting tight and not following through on work started by Collins), NZ$ decline by 10% + since the election, more wage disputes in 10 months than in the previous 10 years.
  If, that is being tough on the inept, as NZ taxpayers, I think we have every right to expect better!

Indiana is not a happy little camper this morning. Last night Tasman District voted down a water dam scheme because of escalating construction cost estimates. Now the region’s friend had promised the scheme funding from his slush fund. So, with last night’s vote Tasman are sending the cheque back to Indiana. Now he is not happy with this.

However, this episode once again raises the question as to how much due diligence is being done regarding projects Jones is offering taxpayer support for? This project is yet another example of poor procurement process leading to contractors escalating estimated costs. You have to give credit to Tasman councillors who voted down this project.

If only, somebody would clip Twitford’s and JAG’s wastage in Auckland (the tram, SkyPath & SeaPath)!

      Harman, it is called project optimism bias. That is those promoting projects always:
      1. Overstate the benefits/revenue returns; and
      2. Understate the costs/negative impacts of a project.
      
      It usually can be boiled down to a promoter (usually a politician) wants a legacy and they have no idea what they are talking about and don’t Cate what the outcome will be.
      
      Hence Auckland gets CRL, the trams etc. and everybody will pay to save Auckland from bankruptcy.

        Yes, I think someone from CATO/Heritage etc wrote a good book on it but I don’t know who (I read the review). It’s not the first time Auckland has been bailed, the reason the provincial system was abolished was Auckland and Southland were bankrupt but this system delivered these lands from a Nation of waring tribes to 1 or 2 in the rankings. We’ve been in a rankings decline since doing away with this internal regional competition.

    It’s getting towards the $10 billion potential – even bigger than the $7.5 billion I predicted at the start. NZ Local Government Assoc. will be bailing out ACC from bankruptcy in 5 years (all local governments share in each other’s failures by agreement). So just because you don’t live in Auckland, don’t think you won’t be paying too.
    
    The last National Government had to deal with the GFC, the next will have to deal with the NZ FC. So the cycle continues.

  I’m wondering where the poor man is going to spread his largesse. Seems all the regions are wanting to close down development… Tasman/Nelson doesn’t want a new dam.. so their growers will look elsewhere for expansion; Patea doesn’t want iron-sand mining way off on its western horizon.
  I went up to Hicks Bay yesterday… the locals don’t want their old wharf repaired… Ngati Porou Forestry do….There are millions of pines planted in the northern East Coast that will be harvested over the next 20 years… It makes sense to deliver them to a Northern Porthead, as opposed to trucking them all through to Gisborne.
  
  There will have to be some political wrangling to get the anti-development folks in the regions to embrace industry, change and progress.

  One annoying line I hear from many observers/commentators, is that businesses have an innate bias against labour governments, as though it is a political bias issue rather than a policy issue.
  I suspect policies that increase cost (raising minimum wages without addressing productivity) and make the business environment more difficult to operate in have an impact on this sentiment. Maybe closing down entire industries without any consultation or not having any policies in place and needing working group proxys as decisions enablers are part of the issue.

I seem to recall that it was also against the rules for a political party to make off with $158,000 of tax payer funds not that long ago.

Ardern sets up some sort of group to link with and get feedback from business leaders. What a dumb stupid thing to do. It would be far more sensible for her to come on Kiwiblog and get the inside oil and bounce ideas around about business. Or read the newspapers.

Thing is, then what she’d read on here is that she’s dumb and stupid and out of touch for not dealing directly with business leaders.

Or maybe she should have floated the idea on here and asked for votes on who she should communicate with in the business world. And only dealt with the nominated group. Then while the group elected, those fitting the particular views and perspectives from here would be in the loop, she’d be pilloried for not being decisive and making up her own mind.

President Donald Trump doubled down on threats against Facebook, Twitter and Google Tuesday afternoon, saying the social platforms are “treading on very, very troubled territory and they have to be careful.”

Trump said in a tweet that the tech giant’s search engine had “rigged” news story results to show mostly “bad” stories about him and other conservatives.

The whole, ‘MMP is to blame for the Nats losing the election’ line is getting old.

As is the rhetoric that somehow the economy would be in a vastly better position if National was in power.

It simply wouldn’t.

John Key, in all his National Party poster boy glory, has even admitted it.

A month ago he told Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking that the factors that drove the economy when he was Prime Minister – strong immigration and house price growth, an abundance of cheap credit globally and a booming China – were either being “taken off the table or reducing”.

“If you want to continue to stimulate the New Zealand economy, the question is, what replaces those factors? And that’s the question the Government ultimately needs to answer,” Key said.

He did not however answer the question himself.

When I asked National Leader Simon Bridges a fortnight ago what he would do, his initial reaction was to do exactly what the Labour-led Government is doing and invest more in health and education.

Entitled Governance of economic transition, the paper paints a dystopian picture of where the world is heading arguing the ways energy, transport, food and housing are produced and consumed must be transformed via some sort of global Marshall Plan.
      
      The paper was written by Finland’s BIOS Research Unit. It’s a scientific background document on transforming economies to support work on the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Report 2019.

The latest saga in Aucklands continuing infrastructure shambles. The Council (AT) have just figured out their Park N Ride stations arent big enough.
My son used the Albany PNR from day one. It filled up so quickly he agreed with his boss he would start work and hour earlier so he could get a park. A little while later that didnt work so he and others starting parking quite safely on the grass verges around the PNR. They were ticketed.
So the Greens/Socialist Left refuse to increase the roading infrastructure and tell the Peasants ‘Get the bloody bus Aholes” and then dont provide the infrastructure.

This is they story of Auckland and to a lesser extent elsewhere.

The citizens continue to tolerate incompetence and willful negligence,

And the CRL. The recently appointed CEO has just told us the cost will be significantly higher than the previous estimates.

Im picking north of $6 Billion and it will be a white elephant. Use will not match the cost and not provide a return in any measure.

Smart business is now either moving out or allowing staff to work remotely. Remote working saves lots. As an employee you pay rent for the workers space of 24/7 168 hr per week yet the worker uses it for 40 pr so. That means you are paying for the empty space foe 76% of the week.

Plus all the other costs of having an employee on site. Better to do as I have done in 2 situations are pay the worker an allowance to use their home as an office.

Also allows better work life balance and allows the worker to avoid the time and cost of commuting.
For example from Browns Bay where I life the weekly commute by car is 10 hours plus. That is not usually paid time so a 40 hour worker is doing 50 hours plus door to door getting paid for 40 which reduces their hourly rate by 20%. So if on say $40 ph the actual rate is $32 ph.

Bryce Edwards used to be a cheerleader for Jacinda Ardern’s government, but it seems the lustre has worn of:

They say a new car smell never lasts long. And Clare Curran has been a major contributor to a slight whiffiness that now accompanies this government.

While the prime minister herself has been a major asset in projecting an image of newness and change, Ms Curran’s behaviour – and now Jacinda Ardern’s relative leniency in dealing with that – has had a tarnishing effect.

Ms Curran’s first major stumble, earlier in the year over the meeting with Carol Hirschfeld, was bad enough. But others, particularly Ms Hirschfeld, paid the price, while Ms Curran largely escaped with a telling off, despite misleading Parliament.

That it was the Minister for Open Government who concealed a meeting with a senior public servant at the beginning of a major restructure wasn’t a good look, to say the least. Many Labour supporters hoped for a genuine change, not just in policies, but in the basic approach to government, eschewing crony capitalism and “jobs for the boys and girls”, which the previous government had rightly been criticised for many times.

Back in March they would have had a sinking feeling. What happened at 4pm last Friday may have finally sunk that promise.

Genuine mistakes and oversights by new ministers can be forgiven. But the same mistake, by the same person, leading to the same serious outcome – misleading Parliament – within a few months is corrosive.

The difference this time is that the prime minister had no choice but to act, and so Ms Ardern’s behaviour and response to Ms Curran’s misdemeanours now also comes under the spotlight.

First, there’s the Friday 4pm news dump. Despite the PM’s ongoing defence of the timing, it was so blatant, so brazen and so contrary to the basic principles of transparency and open government that it’s worthy of the final days of a third or fourth term administration.

Second, the refusal to sack someone who has made the same fundamental and basic mistake twice in a matter of months also undermines notions of basic accountability. New prime ministers usually start off trying to set the bar high, and the bar is progressively lowered as the ministerial casualties mount.

It seems the bar for sacking has been set at “deliberate intent”, rather than “incompetence”. And hence Ms Curran has been spared from banishment to the backbench and only “half sacked”.

I also talked with two local academics who believe the ’embassy’ has equipment capable of intercepting all sorts of communications in NZ. They think it was sited in Nuku’alofa because the city lacks American, British, or French embassies and spies.

The National and Labour parties are both aware of how dependent NZ has become on Beijing. I’m not surprised they haven’t raised the issue. I have taught many Chinese students, they work hard, are respectful, and don’t bugger around in class. I have Chinese property managers, – efficient and polite. Will Gayford pop into the bathroom, open the reusable cloth nappie, scrape the poo down the toilet, wipe Neeve with toilet paper and then a reuseable moistened flannel that he has in his bag. And then take pooey flannel and nappy and put them back in a cloth bag (?) and put it back in his carry on luggage with the other soiled nappies and reusable flannels to wash in napisan back at the hotel?

  It’s one week short of two months since the accused appeared in Court and was remanded. How long, indeed, will it take for him to appear for trial?
  
  I trust that nobody will be subjected to any political influence as to the timing of the trial – for example, at a time when there are other happenings or distractions.

  Slight correction srylands. The crash happened at the exit to the tunnel. Obviously the car was stopped in traffic and the van hit it at about 70 km/h (one would have to wonder what the van driver was focusing on).
  That said, it doesn’t take much to crush a 20 year old Peugeot, but very sad for the deceased and his/her family.

  There do seem to be a lot of them and the Labour Party does have dreams (or delusions) of making some immense societal and economic changes under their stewardship…

Nothing remarkable at all. People respond to incentives. Joining a gang, and criminal activity, is a better deal than it was a year ago.

The current government has indicated that penalties for criminal activity are going to reduce, so the disincentives are going away.

On top of that, business uncertainty is going to hamper jobs. Gangs look more secure and attractive. Win/win to join the gangs!

I was really really angry last night after first john Campbell then Patrick Gower went on and on about the families and the re-entry of Pike river. ( And how amazing to have the TV and Patrick there just as Bernie Monk decided to go in). There was a very cogent letter from a parent of one killed in Pike river in a recent Listener who didn’t want re-entry or the bodies discovered/retrieved etc and she sounded like she was not alone. So does this counter point of view get conveyed. Not on your nelly.

And while the Govt is splashing millions of dollars on Pike River what about justice for those who dies in the Canterbury earthquake. Or has the Govt forgotten them???

        Poor Chemnitz, ruined in three big Allied bombing raids in Febuary and March 1945 , the damage so heavy that Audi, the car maker, moved its headquarters from there to Bavaria. It would have been encouraged by the approach of the Red Army.

    The report may be used by the defense to demonstrate the “culture” of the camps to mitigate the offending. It is very possible that is why the report was written.

      Yep. Rather a lot of this has been dealt with behind closed doors. The Police also allowed a secret internal investigation by the offenders before doing anything.
      
      There needs to be a commission of inquiry into the cover up and the commission of inquiry needs to properly investigate the actions of the Police in protecting the guilty.

  The cover story run by their media people, in the link, claims it was a report on Labour Youth Camp culture. It does admit to 4 kiddies having been attacked. Multiple genders were subjected to sexual violence. They claim it was a “man”. They don’t say if he identifies as a man, or is trans.

So I spoke with a supermarket checkout lady today and we discussed the reusable bag scenario. She recounted the numerous times filthy and vermin infested bags she was required to pack were presented, and the size of the cockroach embedded in one of them. I seriously suggested she approach her union (probably one of Angry’s lot) and demand gloves or some kind of filth money to compensate the health risk. If the operator catches a disease who is at fault, and I suspect this is a Work Safe issue? This is another one of the CoL’s unintended consequences.

  Insist that a wash down, then sanitizing is done before you place your groceries on the count out conveyor and also the bench where the packer is.

Very strange, this family in Bali whose insurance has turned them down flat. Either they had no insurance, or she failed to disclose a pre-existing condition. A spontaneous twisted bowel is not a pre-existing condition so if what they are saying is true, the insurance should be paying. Why are they so coy with naming the company or giving details of why cover has been refused? If you want people to give a little, they should at least be entitled to know the full story.

    Given that the septicaemia is a direct consequence of treatment of the pre-existing condition and thus “indirectly related” to it, (from the Southern X travel policy), assuming the wording is the same, it seems the insurance company is in the right. So is the government, because the minute they start paying for people’s travel illness, no-one will bother insuring. That said, it hasn’t stopped them coughing over for uninsured Christchurch earthquake victims, or for Edgcumbe residents without contents insurance. The latter was the EQC.
