There was a businessman who was getting ready to go on a long business trip. Voodoo dick? What a hard act to follow.

However, since it appears there could possibly be a by-election in a special Maori electorate, how does Winston’s waka-jumping bill work?
It has puzzled me for some time.

In the case of a list member qualifying for dismissal, the party has a new member come off their party list, do they not, to replace the one leaving?

With an electorate member leaving, a by-election is triggered, and if a candidate from the same party is returned, the election night party vote percentage is unchanged. So that is it?

However, what happens if a by-election is run, and another party wins the seat.
Forget that it may be remote, but if a National Party candidate won in the vacated Maori special seat, do all the parties effected have to adjust numbers to maintain what Winston calls party vote integrity – to preserve what the voter voted for, although Winston has totally destroyed the validity or integrity of most of the policy that they also voted for?

So does National, picking up the electorate sat in this case, have to loose a list member, and Labour gain one off their party list for the electorate member they lost? All the maintain party vote percentages?

And if the Maori Party resurrected itself and managed to win the seat, would Labour have their numbers maintained with a seat off their List and Parliament then have a one seat over-hang.
All to keep Winston happy and in power – if that is the way it works.
Is it?

  No, the proportionality rule only applies to List seats. If a Party other than Labour wins the seat, Labour loses one and the other party gains. That is what happened in the Northland by-election.

      The proportionality argument is a farce. The point of the bill is to allow Winston to fire his MPs.
      
      The waka jumping bill means list MPs can simply be replaced with the next person on the list. The bill still applies to electorate MPs, but a by-election happens and voters get to decide on the replacement.

  Sofia great question, that Northland by-election exposed our electoral system as complete scam. If the left lost a seat without a national popular vote it would the no.1 news item @ 6PM, red radio would be howling blue murder. National should have been given an extra list seat after Winston won and he shouldn’t have gotten an extra seat.

    Surely legislation that addresses only half the problem – list seats only, but not electorate seats – is some sort of mockery of the democracy the bill purports to protect, itself being unequal and undemocratic.
    And is there no online source that actually explains how the bill works? I have tried several times to find information on it – obviously unsuccessfully – so I’d claim it is not wildly accessible.

        Thanks, Tas. So it does seem a list member replaces a list member (maintains party vote percentage) and an electorate member departing triggers a by-election that any party can win (doesn’t preserve party vote “integrity”).

It’s Friday, and Friday afternoons are generally a good time for Governments to release bad news in a bid to bury them.

Seeing as they had to announce the issue over their thug minister yesterday, maybe they have something particularly big to announce later today. Otherwise, I would have thought yesterday’s news would have been pushed back to today.

In the last Parliament, Todd Barclay, a first-term inexperienced backbench National MP had a falling-out with one of his Electorate office staff, apparently secretly recording his Electorate office to hear what she was saying about him.

All the media ran with this story for many many months and even after Barclay decided not to contest last year’s General Election he was still being reported on for holidaying in Europe, even after he was no longer an MP. The Police also investigated and no charges were laid.

Yesterday, it was reported that a Labour Government Cabinet Minister, Meka Whaitiri, has been stood down as Minister of Customs, after allegedly assaulting one of her Ministerial staff. It was also reported that during the last Parliament, five Personal Assistants working for her had quit her Parliamentary office because she was difficult to work with.

The current case appears to be more significant as it involves a Government Cabinet Minister and an alleged assault and an enduring pattern of conflict with a number of staff.

My question is: Will the same media that pursued Barclay for months on end, demonstrate the same enthusiasm in pursuing Whaitiri? Will they track down all her former employees and interview and report their comments? Will the Police investigate Whaitiri’s alleged assault?

  In a word, no. Meka Whaitiri ticks so many diversity boxes that she is clearly oppressed and suffering the after-effects of colonisation, so she gets a free pass from the media. Barclay’s biggest error was being a privileged, white male, which gave him no wiggle-room.

    There are no dead perverts in Tauranga -the Police cannot find anybody to substantiate that Awanui Black was part of a Paedophile Ring.
    One person only said that he was molested when he was eight by Black I assume from the local media.
    It would be quite wrong to suggest that the Whanau and Iwi clammed up as other earlier cases of abuse have shown, Kahui Twins for example.
    Mrs Black has been ostracised of course.
    There is a movement afoot to have the file completely closed down by the Police Commissioner not just put to one side.

  Funny, last night while the world was talking about the latest errand minister, Standarniatas were getting worked up about Bridges making a story out of the 152 working groups. All the could come up with was that Key & co created 75 in the first 6 months & the CoL 77. Their problem was Key & co slowed down over the next 6 months, but the CoL have continued at an even greater rate. Got the Standarniatas frustrated that there might be something to the story. Oh dear how sad, there is always the babbbbbbyyyyy to talk about…..

Lets talk hypocrisy
NZF rep…(shane Jones), is blasting the Aussie banks.
Winston Peters is considering handing the control of the TAB to Aussie betting companies and spending our tax money in the process.
My solution:
1. Introduce competition, allow on track bookies,
2. Allow other companies to set up betting agencies
3. Reduce the No. of race tracks to major centres eg One in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth , Trentham, Christchurch and Dunedin.
4. One multi purpose track per venue.
This would allow the punters/customers easier access to more racing.
Reduce costs, maintenance etc.
With the sale of the remaining land, that the unused tracks are on, a huge injection of cash to the industry.
Use the tracks for concerts, cassinos etc when not used as race tracks.

    We all said the same about vinyl records when CDs came in and then downloads.
    Now they are finding a niche in the market.
    I think racing could do the same.
    It is competing for LIVE audiences such as concerts, sport etc.
    Run it like that, and it may have a chance.
    Open the TAB to competition
    Reduce the venues to populated main centres

I couldn’t be further apart politically from Idiot/Savant at No Right Turn. But he calls it as he sees it with the crony appointment of Steve Maharey to Chair PHARMAC:

The previous government was notorious for cronyism, running fake appointment processes for form’s sake before shoehorning their preferred cronies in at the last minute. That was pretty blatantly corrupt, but in less than a year the new government has managed to surpass them, with the appointment of former Labour MP Steve Maharey as chair of Pharmac. When Maharey was appointed, I submitted the usual OIA request seeking details on the process. The released documents show cronyism so naked that I have not seen it before in New Zealand.

How bad is it? First, Health Minister David Clark received advice to reappoint the existing board chair Stuart McLauchlan to manage Pharmac through upcoming changes, or at least temporarily reappoint him so a proper process to find a replacement could be run

Check out the documents he has received after an OIA request. Clark was advised to reappoint the existing Chair to provide stability, but instead appointed his mate Maharey, in I/S’s words “No position description, no application, no interviews, nothing. Readers will remember that Clark also sacked the Chair of Counties-Manakau DHB, and appointed a former Labour minister to that role; Mark Gosche. Was there a proper process followed with THAT appointment, or is Clark simply looking after his Labour mates?

  There’s nothing wrong with the Green Parrot, if you like straightforward food in generous portions. Last time I went there my mate had the flounder meal. He got TWO pan-fired flounder on one plate, then a separate plate with chips, salad and the GP’s iconic potato salad, plus a large plate of white bread and butter to share.

But the police accept the offending was not as sinister as when 51-year-old Dean Alan Lindsay Graham was arrested 18 months ago in a raid on a property southwest of Christchurch.

They dropped six charges against Graham at the Christchurch District Court on Thursday. He then admitted charges of allowing his premises to be used for growing cannabis, a licensing breach under the Arms Act over firearms found at the property, and possession of a cannabis pipe.

His father, Neil Graham, co-founder of trucking giant company Mainfreight, died in September 2015, aged 71, after a long illness.

I read on Stuff that Chelsea Manning has been barred from Australia. I have noticed how the NZ media was generally supportive of stopping Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux from coming here but with Chelsea Manning they are critical of people who don’t want her (?) to come.

In the early 70s I was a part time student studying law and accounting. I refused to join the Clerical Workers Union figuring my virgin legal knowledge would allow me to be exempt.
The Union rep threatened to send me to Coventry (Google it) and to prosecute me.
My boss who was very sympathetic took me aside and said pay the fees and I will reimburse you in cash on the quiet and for God Sake dont tell anyone.

My point is IMHO compulsory union membership is next on the agenda. It will start out with the “vulnerable sectors” to protect t he workers from the Bad Bosses and then spread.
Just like industry Awards are going to spread.
The COL will claim success in the early few as the reason for the rest.

This will be both Utu and payback for the Unions support.

  Recall some of those days too.
  
  Engineers Union wanted me to join their Union.
  Storeman and Packers wanted me to join their Union.
  Carpenters Union also wanted me to join their Union.
  All simultaneously as I worked as a “casual” at that factory.
  
  Demarcation disputes came close to boiling up as they all seemed to want a pound of flesh too. It was was thought I was part of the Engineeers Union, as I operated a processing machine. It needed more material input and so I ended up unloading containers. That came to the attention of store man packers union.
  Some of the wooden pallets needed a minor repair, tapping a few nails back in to tighten them, but the carpenters Union caught a whiff of that.
  
  Any way I had another job, where I did pay Union dues, to a totally different Union, but I often had much time off.
  
  Those Unionist were all so grubby people, just like that Labour Party 20 year old, under court charges and wondering hands!
  
  I look back that I was poorly paid, just union rates, but it seemed that my out put was often 20+% more per shift.
  Paying massive taxes in those days soon learned me.

Turned on the internet this morning, & lead story was a Newshub Comment on why Jacinda is angry.

It appears she is angry because she perceives the Australians are interferring in NZ politics. This is as a response of yet another poor business confidence survey published by ANZ (An Australian bank).

Let me make it simple for the poor wee SLG, with a neon sign and fireworks.

Business confidence is falling, as evidenced by:
1. Flat lining of new business capital investment;
2. The anecdotal story run by RNZ on Wednesday surveying Morrinsville businesses;
3. Reports by the IT sector that new engagements are getting harder to find. I have friends who are IT consulting contractors in Auckland and they report business is drying up and are looking more keenly at the public sector. When consultancy type businesses seek safe haven with the public sector, that is a clear sign things are getting tougher and confidence is ebbing; and
4. Reports that some categories of consumer spending is not as buoyant as previous.

But why is confidence ebbing:
1. The changes to the minimum wage were implemented without consulting business;
2. The axing of the tax cut package, putting pressure on middle NZ who are the people upon whom business rely;
3. The axing of future oil and gas exploration without consultation or a plan to replace oil & gas requirements;
4. Policy making made without proper evidence to support the validity of the decision e.g. the plastic bag decision;
5. Interference in the management of NZ business by Shane Jones & Winston Peters, first their is the Regional slush fund, then there is Jones telling the management of Air NZ & Fonterra to take a hike. This coupled with an orchestrated programme in the media to attach Fonterra coming from those aligned to the government.
6. The Employment Relations bill, 90 day trial etc. – why fix something that wasn’t broke?; and
7. The constant talk of transitioning, transitioning to what? Where is the plan? why do need 150 plus working groups? And what will be the outcome..?

The above is why confidence is sinking, it is not the Australians running squirrels. It is the inept leadership of Jacinda and Winston and the lack of direction of the CoL and it’s policies.

Remember Jacinda and friends of the CoL it is NZ business that employs the majority of kiwi workers and without NZ business you’ll have a very unhappy electorate in 2020.

Venezuela’s problems started with big infrastructural investment, hikes in minimum wage and kicking the shit out of rental property owners because of housing shortages but they didn’t anticipate the big drop in oil prices that was coming.

Ardern would not comment on Whaitiri’s case today, including whether she was aware if her Labour colleague had a history of bad behaviour.
She also would not comment on the reportedly high staff turnover in Whaitiri’s office.
“I’m leaving this to be completed by Ministerial Services. Once they’ve completed their report then I’ll make a decision on how it will be managed.”

If this is the correct procedure to handle this matter, why has Simon Bridges not advised Ministerial Services of his leak problem and that the person irresponsible confesses to be seriously mentally ill and should require care in handling but, while they threaten to perhaps harm to themself, would seem unsuited to be working as either a staffer or Member of Parliament, as the Speaker asserts is their likely position in Parliament?

  There are two separate administering outfits. Ministerial Services, part of the department of internal affairs, employs staff for ministerial offices. Parliamentary Services, part of parliament itself, and under the purview of the Speaker, provides services to MPs. So the Speaker was concerned about the leak of information on parliamentary expenses, but has nothing to do with a staffing matter in a minister’s office.

Here in the BOP the major road of National Significance from Tauranga to Waihi has been put on the scrap heap.
Many people die on the current road each year as it is too narrow and has very few passing lanes, and dangerous drops by the roadside.
They are going to upgrade the current road with a few cheese cutters.
Meanwhile they have improved the local subsidized bus service by adding free Wi-Fi to a service that no ones uses, as they are EMPTY all day.

  Why would you expect Labour to bother with our roads? They would rather spend the money in Auckland where they own the ground.
  
  We are much to enterprising. After all we built 3 major roads and a bridge with tolls. Utterly pissed off both forms of low life.
  
  Just like we fucked up the Ports Authority by buying our own General Purpose Crane and converting it for containers.

      4.5.2 Health problems
      Kea are not known to have any disease or health problems that are specific to the species (other than a wild flea) however they are susceptible to common parrot diseases and health problems.
      Health problems or diseases which have been known to affect kea or are significant parrot diseases which require monitoring include:

      Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD)
      •
      Aspergillosis
      •
      Avian Malaria
      •
      Ingestion of foreign bodies
      
      For instance in the case of Aspergillosis:
      
      Symptoms range from respiratory distress, gasping, accelerated breathing, voice changes, abnormal droppings, emaciation, regurgitation
      , poor appetite, diarrhoea, anorexia, gout, increased thirst, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, dyspnoea, neuromuscular disease, and somnolence, lesions (yellow or gray nodules and/or plaques in the lungs, air sacs, or trachea; less often in the peritoneal cavity, liver or other sites).
      
      Sounds nasty! 🙂
