It was unnecessary and unwise of Simon Bridges to describe Ardern’s speech yesterday as ‘Trump-like’. We get enough Trump bashing from our MSM without the Leader of the National Party aligning himself to similar mindless rhetoric. Go all out to criticise Ardern but why on earth introduce the pointless slur on Trump.

Don’t make that same mistake again, Simon. It you truly wish to lead our nation as PM such a foolish and ill-considered remark might well come back to bite you on the bum.

        Captain: When I stop to think about it I may abstain. I find the apparent directionless of National quite alarming as their major virtue at present is they are not as dreadful (nothing could be!) as the Coalition of Losers. The only front-bench National MPs who are seemingly in attack mode are Jerry and Judith. There is talk about National needing to clear out some dead wood. I tend to disagree. The dead wood as it is unfairly described includes years of experience which is something the CoL doesn’t have and (I hope) never will. Whether Simon Bridges evolves into an effective leader remains a moot point.

      But I was ‘Two Ticks Blue’ at last year’s election purely because the alternative (Labour/Green Coalition) was too horrific to contemplate.

    Ardern is a bit like Trump in her determination. Ardern has a fixed self program that doesn’t allow her to be as she needs to be. He’s a businessman but no head of state. He’s typical of a type of bully who wins by putting others down and not letting them get up again.
    Trump’s international relations is essentially to tell everyone that if they don’t do as they are told to do he will take action against their person or livelihood. Such were formerly viewed as acts of war.
    Where’s the evidence that the USA economy is going strongly? The stock market only shows the excessive liquidity pumped in by the FED and the market buybacks financed likewise. The deficit through war spending is ballooning. The Chinese are threatening to cut supplies. The USD is being replaced in trading. Meanwhile the USA assist the Saudi’s to destroy Yemen.

  The irony is that a comparison with Obama is so much more appropriate; however, I suspect that because the man still wears a halo, Bridges’ advisors fought shy of that one. Just like Obama, Ardern was delivering ‘vision’, ‘aspiration’ and many other empty socialist platitudes; frankly, I’m surprised that she didn’t promise us unicorns with rainbow wings: it was that patronisingly bad.

What a dilemma. Send them to prison with rehabilitation that includes lifting their reading skills to turn them into killler’s when they know what the “safety” on a firearm means.     Unless Labour take a significant lead over the Nats in the next poll I suspect the Labour back bench and others could be a bit worried.
    
    All very well to have Cindy as preferred PM thats usual at this stage in the cycle but also for the lead party to be ahead of the Opposition .
    
    I cant recall a time when 12 months in the Opposition was leading. Its usually trailing well behind.
    
    I suspect all is not well in Camp Labour.

  He sees a bunch of happy white kids from nurturing homes and with great careers ahead of them.

Listened to Peters this morning on Red Radio and we had to laugh at the comedian.
Presumably he had agreed to go on radio as Ardern would not – being afraid she might be asked a serious question and not about babies.
Did he waffle and obfuscate – he refused in reality to answer any question but his verbal diarrhea tried continually to out talk the good interviewer’s simple yes or no questions.
He started before any questions by slanging Bridges as he was on the talk back before Peters saying what a stupid meeting yesterday of invited people and that there was nothing new from a year ago for the COLL only regular disasters.
I don’t think anybody listening could but smile at the stupid old fool failing to answer any simple questions as to who is running the Government – to be honest would upset the baby’s milk.
And he wishes to play out his game because that is what it is to him and Jones – a game at our country’s expense.

      I find it a little hard to believe that high-speed chases are racially motivated to any large degree. I would imagine that police are chasing cars that are breaking the law or have been stolen. Establishing the ethnic identity (or age!) of the driver in such circumstances would be difficult.

      This is, I suppose, an attempt at ‘restorative justice’. However, that works if, and only if, the offender truly subscribes to the idea of actions resulting in consequences. Given the pervasive sense of entitlement, victimisation, loss of mana….you know how it goes…that Maori have been brainwashed into holding, it’s inevitable that well-meaning, but naive initiatives, such as this, by the police , will be doomed to failure.   Sofia, those pep talks policy resetting speeches never achieve that. I’ve seen the same thing twice before:
  1. 1994 -97, the Tory Major government got into trouble after the forced exit from the ERM. They had a slim majority, had all sorts of problems between pro & anti EU factions, so remained weak in the public’s estimations. So, they had countless relaunches, all if which came undone. They were put out of their misery when Tony Blair won in the general election (in a landslide).
  2. 3007 – 2010, Gordon Brown (the leader & PM in waiting) got the keys to 10 Downing St finally. In the summer of 2007 it all start well for Gordo, but then he got the wobbles and the wheels fell off. Labour, through the GFC, hobbled to the 2010 election and got beaten by the Tories, who fell short of the finish line and needed the Dim-Libs as coalition partners. Note to NZF, the Dim-Libs were all but wiped out in the 2015 election.
  
  So the lesson for the Labour led CoL’s you can have all the relaunches you like, you can try to remind yourself that Jacinda is a strong leader, and you can tell the public that you have a plan.
  
  However, the CoL’s problems remain, being:
  They are led by the SLG;
  They need Winston & NZF; and
  They comprise the same 63 incompetent MPs today, as they did on Friday and until the next election whenever that will be.
  
  To paraphrase Gareth Morgan.
  A pig in a poke, even with lipstick on, is still a pig in a poke. Get over Jacinda, Winston, Labour/NZF/Green trolls – the CoL isn’t working and things will only get worse before the electorate put you out of your misery.

When people in this Country realise that Peter’s is the scourge on NZ Politics and didn’t install Jacinda and Labour to power for the good of NZ and its people then they will realise that it was done for like all things to do with NZ First for Winston and only Winston. Why would you vote for a Politician that has a history of dodgy dealings like the Vella helicopter and the Owen Glenn saga and many more like the fishing and horse racing donations and some of our wealthiest still treat him as the Messiah and fallover backwards to help him succeed at the expense of those trying to make NZ one of the best Countries in the world to live in.

  The dog owner was lucky that he was warned, but accepts no responsibility, for creating worry in sheep, disturbing them, at any time, let alone the critical time of lambing.
  So the sheep were just a little bit pregnant, as lambing time now.
  
  “I issued three warnings regarding the dogs being on the farm. The first time one was caught and returned to the owners, who were talked to at that stage by dog control.
  
  “Sadly for everyone involved, the warnings to keep the dogs off the property were not heeded and the dogs continued to roam among the stock on our land.”

Has he forgotten that he was the idiot who cancelled National’s plan to turn it into a 4 lane highway?
He’s also the same idiot who confirmed that a new Melling interchange in the Hutt Valley would go ahead (and got himself on the front page of the local paper). then two weeks later it was deleted from the list of roading projects that would get funding.

  I’m not familiar with the section of SH2 that obviously requires remedial action and has done so for some time; well before Simon Bridges term as Minister in charge of that sort of thing.
  I do remember, however, that not too long before the election the Nats came up with a comprehensive list of roads they intended to make into four lanes. Clearly an election bribe.
  One of them was the stretch of SH1 between Chch & Ashburton that I have driven many times over the years including twice this last weekend.
  I was easily able to maintain a speed of 100 kph on those long straight stretches of road, often with someone right behind me, both on Friday & yesterday.
  Talking to family down there, the real problems are the idiot drivers, not the roads and poor driving by tourists on the inland routes.

    Ashburton-Christchurch weekends aren’t the issue, it’s the weekdays that are a problem given large volume of commercial and commuting traffic south of Chch. The traffic numbers have risen to point that there is now occasional slowing of flows as a result, costing transport productivity, and it’s only going to get worse.
    
    Road building in Canterbury is very cheap. Hard, flat ground, gravel almost free, no drainage issues, few rivers, cheap land. With on going growth of canterbury agriculture it is sensible to invest in a 2 lane highway.

Winston Peters is a pain in the arse to everyone except NZF.
In the twenty five years since it started plenty of other minor parties have sidled up to governing parties and been punished by the voters.
Peters knows that if he caves in on certain key policies that clash with Labour he can kiss his arse goodbye at the next election.

Example of what can happen when third parties lose their nerve.
Back in 1983 Social Credit pretty much vanished after Bruce Beetham went against the members wishes and voted with National in favour of the Clyde Dam to tip the balance.

  It’s not government funding, the government has no money. It should read “The Christchurch City Council has voted to spend $220 million of its taxpayer funding on a new stadium.”
  
  I object to paying for a rugby stadium (and despite what rugby apologists say about it being a multi sport venue it will be a rugby stadium) As a tax payer I have forked out more than enough toward the Christchurch rebuild, essentials I am happy to pay for, rugby stadiums they can pay for themselves.

Good observation from Leighton Smith this morning when discussing the prison population. He was calling b***t on the claim that over 50 percent of prisoners were Maori, and asked what the percentage would be if all those with between 1 and 49% Maori blood were not counted as such. Intriguing answer from the caller he was discussing it with – if someone has 0.1% of Maori blood then they must be counted as Maori.
I’ve wondered myself at how a ‘mixed’ person is classified in these stats, given that a lot of us may have a small element of Maori blood, even if we regard ourselves as non-Maori.

  It’s going to be interesting to see how it plays out. The Skullduggery involved is pretty bad (Dems have been sitting on this for months to play as a last minute gotcha), and the accuser has a lot of alarm bells – left wing academic (clinical psychologist), seemingly slowly filling in forgotten details (not a reliable process) during therapy starting about 5 years ago, didn’t remember name, location, or when it happened. Memory is not trustworthy after 30-35 years (all neurons replaced about every 20 years, so only get memories of memories, things that you use or replay in your mind occasionally) and therapy is a loaded process not aimed at truth so much as at helping patients.
  
  I’d guess something did happen, but knowing if she has the right culprit, or the various perceptions and circumstances of what happened after such a long time is impossible. It is likely to have been at the time minor incident that she didn’t dwell on particularly, now reinterpreted by a much changed and more militant politically conscious middle aged feminist living in very different times.
  
  Couldn’t ever result in a conviction, but perhaps the mud is sufficient to prevent Kavanaugh from being appointed.

Prof Feldstein said the next bear market – most likely triggered by a spike in 10-year Treasury yields – risks setting off a US$10 trillion (NZ$15 trillion) crash in US household assets. The cascading ‘wealth effects’ will drain the retail economy of US$300bn to US$400bn a year, causing recessionary forces to mestasasize.

“Fiscal deficits are heading for US$1 trillion dollars and the debt ratio is already twice as high as a decade ago, so there is little room for fiscal expansion,” he said, speaking earlier on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti forum on world affairs at Lake Como.

The eurozone faces an even worse fate when the global cycle turns since the European Central Bank has yet to build up safety buffers against a deflationary shock. The half-constructed edifice of monetary union almost guarantees than any response will be too little, too late.

“The Europeans don’t have a fiscal back-up. They don’t have anything. At least you have your own central bank and treasury in Britain, so you will be happier,” he said.

I’m guessing any crash would have Europe doubling down on their multi-billion Euro Brexit bill … in an attempt to re-fill their coffers with sterling.

On Monday, California governor Jerry Brown signed into law SB 100, which requires the state’s utilities to obtain all their electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045.

In addition to the few trillion dollars needed for the solar/wind/green-idea-de-jour generation capacity, the (technically bankrupt) state utilities will need to install 36.3 terawatt-hours of energy storage. This is about 60 Tesla Powerwalls for every resident of California, ie around 2.4 billion Powerwalls, and comes with a $US14 trillion price tag.

How many will die from this green eco-madness? Plenty. And it won’t be the wealthy.

  28 years means they would have time to do it all with cheap safe next generation nuclear when it is ready for deployment in 10-20 years.
  
  If not nuclear then california is ideal for PV through most of the year, with massive over-build they could export it in summer and still have enough for winter. Batteries can manage night time storage. They also have lots of 3-4km tall mountains that offer huge potential for cheap winter pumped storage. They are easily rich enough to afford it.

      2.7Trillion GDP for the state of California, that deficit amounts to about 0.7% of that. Bigger problem is their various debts and unfunded future liabilities (pensions in particular) California and it’s councils may owe in region of $1-2 Trillion. Truth it is, like Greece it simply won’t be paid out to all those ex civil servants, they will be forced to take hair-cuts.
      
      Also note current growth in economy is far greater than debt being accrued. And there are a vast number of fixed assets that can be taxed to balance the books into the foreseeable future.
      
      PV is now being built at tender for as little as $0.027/kWh supplied to grid in sunny climates. It is now the cheapest form of non-hydro power available, when the sun is shining. And improving + cheapening batteries are soon going to make it very competitive with everything else.

      Modern elite drivers are all super-fit – many do competitive endurance sports as part of their training, and are able to keep focus and coordination at extreme levels for hours at a time while fighting to hold their head+helmet weight against 5g accelerations and pressing on brake pedals with 2x their body weight. F1 drivers hearts average 170-190 bpm during races, they can lose up to 3kg of sweat during a race.
      
      Most sports aren’t that taxing on the body.

        Doing 85 laps each of 1:30ish and being consistent to 1/100ths or so a second
        Huge mental toughness to achieve that.
        It’s fitness, mental toughness, an ability to handle competitive pressure, freak reaction times and of course having superior driving skills.

      It depends on your definition of an “ATHLETE” as being someone who relies on skill and their own muscles or just their own muscles to win a “sporting” event.
      
      In this regard, champions of bowling, curling, darts, snooker, trap shooting, archery, and the like rely on technique, mental state, courage, experience, judgement and skill rather than outright muscle to win their medals.
      
      I can shoot an arrow into a target too, but I can’t control its location anywhere near the way a champion can.

Govt. is rolling over the Iraq deployment for another year.
I agree with this, on the grounds that; We are part of this world and should pull our weight.
BUT
this just proves their unreadiness for reality.
Just a year or so ago they were decrying JK for doing this, as dangerous and unnecessary and PROMISED to withdraw them.

I feel passionately that New Zealand’s efforts must focus on humanitarian assistance. Labour has pledged to double our refugee quota and I am convinced this is where we can do a lot of good.

So, 2 years ago, Andrew Little wanted us to:
– not send our troops to Iraq
– bring them home
– bring lots of refugees with them

As for that pledge about doubling our refugee quota, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs apparently disagrees!

A leaked Government document has revealed a new level of detail on its work programme and achievements to date but no mechanisms for accurately measuring progress.

Leak? I don’t think so. More like a stage-managed release so the COL can bashfully let us know how busy they have been in office.

  They have been very busy:
  Fending off strikes
  Creating working groups to do their work for them
  Spending OUR money
  Their achievements have been:
  A fall in business confidence
  A fall in economic growth
  A rise in unemployment
  ie ALL negative outcomes.

    Unemployment hasn’t risen since CoL came in, it fell for a bit after election (4.6-4.4%), though is trending upwards now at 4.5%.

AMP charged nearly A$1 million ($1.09m) in life insurance premiums to thousands of its superannuation members it knew were dead, Australia’s banking royal commission has heard.

AMP’s group executive of wealth solutions and chief customer officer, Paul Sainsbury, told the financial services royal commission that AMP had identified 3124 members who had been charged around A$922,000 in additional life insurance premiums despite AMP being told the member had died.

I’ve been wondering if the most sincere & straight-up person on the front bench of the CoL might be Jacinda Ardern. All the rest of them know what’s going on but lie through their teeth.

She’s the only one who genuinely has no idea what’s happening!

Why is Annabel Langbein’s cooking programme rated for 15 and over?
She keeps her clothes on, doesn’t use cuss words, no one is injured in the creation of her recipes and I’ve never seen her run with scissors.

  I suspect it is something to do with the cognitive disonance with which the frail young mind cannot cope as it struggles to find its true identity as an omnivore, carnivore or herbivore. The University of Otago undertook an extensive study with the help of a government grant and concluded that exposure to food of any sort drives the youth of today to Maccas for a giant burger which in turn leads to obesity.

Statistics NZ on its web site climbs into the Maorification movement.

Here’s the plug:

More than half (53 percent) of New Zealanders say te reo Maori should be a core subject in primary schools, Stats NZ said today.

Data about attitudes to the Maori language was collected for the first time in New Zealand’s biggest survey of well-being – the General Social Survey (GSS) 2016.

“Te reo Maori is recognised as a taonga, or treasure, for all New Zealanders,” [Stats Department] labour market and household statistics senior manager Jason Attewell said. ‘‘The GSS survey shows about half of New Zealanders have positive attitudes to te reo Maori.”

Over half (53 per cent) of New Zealanders said they strongly agreed or agreed ‘Maori should be a core subject in primary schools’.

The survey is an NZ outcome of the international “social indicators movement” that began in the 1970s.

The Ministry of Social Development describes reasons behind the movement:

“These included a realisation that the technological and economic progress of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s had come at a social cost that was not well understood or measured; and a desire on the part of some to “measure” the “social” sector in a manner similar to how the System of National Accounts and other well-institutionalised economic indicators were used to measure the size and performance of national economies.

The head of Statistics NZ is Liz Macpherson, the Government Statistician. Macpherson also has the title “Government Chief Data Steward”. The Statistics NZ web site says this role is “supporting government to realise the potential of data to improve well being, while maintaining and building trust in its use.”

  Yet Jack5 apart from this plug for Maorification they still have not released the count from the latest census how many still speak Chereo gibberish? The previous two census showed significant reductions in the numbers which so sad after the $billions that have been wasted over those periods. Just imagine what that could have done for the people of NZ which despite their claims includes all those “disadvantaged” natives equally.
