This guy was driving along a country road. Along the side of the road he sees a sign: “Apples, $5.00 each.” So he pulls over to the side of the road and asks the farmer why his apples are so expensive. The farmer says, “Well, these are peanut butter and jelly apples.” So the guy buys one. He says, “These apples only taste like jelly, where’s the peanut butter?” The farmer says, “Turn the apple over and take a bit of the other side.” Sure enough the other side tasted like peanut butter.

So the guy buys one. The apple only tasted like ham, so he asked the farmer why and he said, “Turn the apple over and you will taste the cheese.”
Then he is driving down the road again and he sees another sign: “Apples, $50.00 each.” So he asks the farmer, “What’s up with these apples being so expensive?” The farmer tells him they are pussy apples. So the guy buys one. He takes a bite into the apple and says “This apple tastes like shit!” And the farmer says, “Turn it over.”

    Peters wouldn’t normally be in Parliament today as it’s a Thursday but given that the House is under urgency and that Peters’ arse is hanging out to dry with Bishop’s little surprise package he might need to cancel his planned extended lunch and turn up.

So, the Meka Whaitiri report has been leaked.

Allegedly this all came about because the PM was having a stand up with the media at a function in Gisborne, and Whaitiri was upset that she didn’t know about it, and she blamed her press secretary for not alerting her to the fact.

Apparently Whaitiri was upset that she had missed out on her opportunity to get her face on the telly!

Well, she certainly got a lot of time on TV in the next few days, didn’t she! Just goes to show, be careful what you wish for.

  The scandal of this story is the fact that a race based so-called caucus (which shouldn’t exist) , backs the alleged actions of an MP that has acted in a way that should never happen in this country.
  This underlines why culture should be kept out of politics and also underlines the recurring theme attributed to a particular culture in New Zealand.
  That we have reached a point where the likes of Thomas at Massey and many others are sucked in to this undermining of once high principles in Parliament and institutions is very sad indeed.

        When our little kids misbehaved badly, we used to tell them that while we still loved them for themselves, we did NOT love what they had done. Learning to consider the effect that their actions had on others put a brake on their lack of self discipline.
        Perhaps this is what Davis is trying to say.

Get rid of the Maori Seats which is fine but another clever Maori will come along and like Peters turn it to his advantage.   Ardern entered the territory of the Minister without informing her. Mika Whaitere may be even more highly regarded than the PM in her own Maori society. The PM not acknowledging that could have caused serious offence. Such can be matters for utu.

      It was five years in the 1980s which is why Lippy Fat Bastard Lange hung in until August 1989.
      He did not achieve much after that.
      
      I always admired that Mike Moore was able to parlay 8 weeks as PM into the career he attained. This despite Moore having some serious health challenges from early on.
      
      This shows up how utterly useless Lange really was and more like Ardern as Lange was put out as front man while the rest of the ‘Fish and Chip Brigade’ did the heavy lifting.
      Fish and Chips seems to be a theme in Labour politics.
      
      The Fish and Chip girl was put out front in 2017. Some might even say as lipstick on a pig.
      Two ministers down in a month and nearly half in witless protection is a bit of a pig by any count.
      
      The SLG needs to take a leaf from Moore’s journey and not from Lange hanging in too long.
      A smart person would be ‘having a conversation’ with Moore.
      Like Norm Kirk, Moore left school early but was an avid reader and later a writer.
      I’m not sure if one could call the SLG overeducated.
      More like uneducated vis a vis the real world.

Generally female leaders are unpopular with huge swathes of shitholistanians. Helen Clark was an anomaly for NZ representation in the UN because whatever her failings she was good at getting what she wants in politics. UN is a failing organisation in any case.

The point I would make here is that renewables are the future BUT BUT BUT… as a variable energy source they MUST be matched to demand side (variable) appliances. Batteries are way too expensive and a drop in the ocean.
So until this technical challenge is taken on board, forget it, and it will have to be driven by the power co’s themselves.
Trying to survive on subsidies will end in tears, as the wind farmers are finding out.

  Translation – the company wants a free ride at the expense of other industry players particularly hydro station operators. The other wind farm players also own hydro stations so can operate these facilities in harmony to the company’s benefit. Wind generation is utterly dependent on the availability of other generation to be successful. This can be quick start diesel or gas generation, or even better hydro generation where available (NZ has spare hydro capability for working with wind farms but this capability is the property of the power station owners). Storage whether batteries or ‘pumped storage’ schemes is not a complete answer.
  This wind farm wants the ability to dump its random output on to the grid and market and expect to receive ‘top price’ for its output.

    And this is why our electricity is so expensive. Wind farms always have their electricity sold as they bid close to zero dollars and sell at market rates. This means they can guarantee the sale of their electricity no matter what the price.
    Other more dependable sources, such as coal or gas, bid their minimum price on the open market, but may not always be selected. However, because wind is so unreliable its imperative that these turn-key operations exist.
    Surely on a calm, dry, cloudy day when the wind isnt blowing, the dams are a little dry and solar is in the shadows, the gas turbine operators could name their price. Anyone seen the Enron doc?

  I may be incorrect, but my understanding is that paired with Hydro generation that has adequate storage capacity wind power’s intermittent generation can be sufficiently buffered to be useful. Not sure on the economics, but with hydro buffering the power when generated can be effectively stored as water without the pumping losses normally present with using pumped stored water. As such, NZ is one of the places where wind power can make sense in limited quantities, along with Norway as another example.

  How are they in trouble? It reports they are profitable in the current market. They report as being a company with long term moderate profits. They do say that its unlikely to improve without market structure changes, more reliable customers, or diversification. A common set of issues for any company.
  
  They have not received subsidies. Variable producers are matched with energy storage hydro, the battery that evens out supply. They mentioned this as an issue for them. Other companies with both have few issues as you implied, incorrectly.

    Wind speed is related to differences in air pressure. Temperature as you imply by increased or decreased sun is mostly irrelevant. Low temperature planets and moons do have high winds as differences in polar gas pressure , dark side gas pressure still result in weather. The Suns variability is so small and its temperature effect here is even smaller. The wind speed change is negligible from that cause.
    Solar winds are relatively constant and our magnetic field has no issues coping with solar winds. Coronal mass ejections are different in that they can for a short time overwhelm the magnetic field. It is however just the penetration of particles to the surface that’s an issue for our power system and radiation exposure. To imply it causes earthquakes is absurd. They are a result of the earths crust moving, getting stuck, letting go. Caused by different travel speeds based on latitude pulling the crust and the moon repeatedly lifting and droping the crust by about 30cm as Earth rotates, that in turn causes tides. Earth, a magnet does not change shape due to electromagnetic current. The field changes shape. The crust does not move to repel the radiation especially to minor forces of solar winds. The forces would need to be so great that we would be striped of an atmosphere for a solar wind to cause an earthquake.

But by chance I came upon the full text of his speech. It is very, very different from the way it has been portrayed here. Yes, the nervous idiots did laugh when Trump spoke of the US economy, but when one reads the totality of what he actually said, the laughter was stupid …. and perhaps expected from the culprits. Why, amongst all the mess of the Haumaha Inquiry, has neither the Government nor the Opposition mentioned a “New deputy promoted alongside Wally Haumaha as size of police executive grows”
… the police have created another deputy police commissioner role, by internally promoting Assistant Commissioner John Tims to run the 12 police districts.

Meanwhile – Police National Headquarters have confirmed Haumaha retains the same responsibilities as when he was the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Maori, Pacific and Ethnic Services. As such, no one will be promoted to the rank he vacated.

Why was Haumaha selected to be the one statutory Deputy Commissioner, appointed by Governor-General, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister?
[ Current structure: under Police Commissioner there are 4 Deputy Commissioners – one statutory Deputy Commissioner, appointed by Governor-General, and three Deputy Commissioners, appointed by Police Commissioner ]

Does new Deputy Police Commissioner Tims in fact have greater responsibilities, running the 12 police districts, than Haumaha in his duties, which are unchanged? Why was the appointment of Deputy Commissioner Tims not publicised as was the promotion of Haumaha, when Tims probably controls more of relevance to the general public?

Prompted by the questions of one person, Louise Nicholas, and now a further three women’s allegations of bullying, and consequently a question of inappropriate witness contact, this Inquiry is to ascertain how an appointment – involving the Prime Minister and then Governor General – was made regarding a man who apparently is now performing the same duties as he was before.

As a Yes, Minister series plot line, this would have been dismissed as being too silly to be plausible.

    I think if you read the report you will discover that: 1. the press officer was shocked and possibly frightened after the assault.
    2. She was only 6 days into the job.
    3. She was in a strange city and wouldn’t have had support people with her

Heard the hypocrite Ardern moaning during an interview about how hard it was to “sell the free trade concept” to NZ citizens since coming into power.

Given the anti-free trade activity of the Liebour party during their time in opposition is she surprised. Bloody lairs and hypocrites, did everything the could to scupper the TPPA, then when they are in power they re-brand it and try sell it as their own. And now she’s trying to make it look like the ignorant citizenry are the problem.

Practically nothing could be more disastrous for that environment than the presence of tens of thousands of goats. What argument can there be against an all-out campaign to get rid of the lot of them, let alone the very modest reduction in their numbers which is all that is actually being proposed?

  10,000 is NOT a “very moderate reduction”. And since Minister Sage has backed down since the issue was raised in Parliament yesterday, including the revelation that no one would sell ammunition to DoC, it’s clearly an issue that the government was sensitive about.
  
  The underlying issue was that there had been no consultation with the tourism and recreational hunting sectors. Kudos to MP’s Sarah Dowie and Hamish Walker for raising the issue on behalf of constituents, setting up a petition that attracted over 20,000 signatures in less than 24 hours, and ultimately forced the Minister into a backdown. That’s exactly what Opposition MP’s should be doing.

        I normally say fuck the greens as well (yep, I say fuck a lot)…but as someone involved in natural resource management I’ve had a gutsfull of wankers wanting to restrict others so they can go play hero at the weekend and talk it up with their mates at the pub.
        
        If I’m my ability (or more specifically that of my clients) to take water from a river is limited because you want to play caveman two weekends a year, when trout/salmon are fucking up what naturally lives in the rivers (and which wouldn’t be affected by water abstraction*), you and your fishead mates can absolutely get fucked.
        
        Recreational values are a joke….literally tens of millions of $ each year are spent in nonsense consent and regional plan processes by productive folks battling hypocritical wankers.
        
        * see flow requirements for native species vs what aquatic rats are supposed to require, natives are quite happy, well adapted and very resilient to flow variability. The main thing that has near wiped then out (particularly in headwaters) is predation by trout. But then again who gives a fuck as long as you can head out the odd weeknight and bag slimy thing that tastes like arse.

    From what I have read, the Ministry reached an agreement with hunting associations to keep the Tahr numbers under control and they didn’t. Which isn’t surprising given that they have a direct incentive to let the numbers grow (more Tahr = more hunting).
    
    It’s the same reason why deer culling fails. When you pay hunters to shoot deer they have an incentive not to kill all of them (since their future income is preserved by leaving a few hinds behind to produce more deer).

        There’s a finite amount of money in the DoC budget. If hunting associations promise to control Tahr numbers then it frees up money for other DoC projects.
        
        At least that’s the theory. Unfortunately it doesn’t work in practise. Which is why DoC are now preparing to cull the Tahr.

      All Government Departments could theoretically do more with with more money.
      
      I was on a Conservation Board for 5 years.
      
      I was not impressed with how DoC managed its finances.
      There has been too little attention to basic stewardship of the DoC estate and its infrastructure.
      The emphasis on iconic species has been at the expense of core habitat/ ecosystem protection.
      Too many overpaid specialists/managers pursuing their own pet projects for far too long.
      I believe the original model for DoC was wrong from the start….
      The leadership of DoC has never been impressive.

I have decided the new name for the PM is Puddle Cindy (PC). It describes her on so many levels.

Take her intellect.
I have observed 14 PMs in my time following politics. The next lowest to her in the intellect stakes would be Big Norm but he more than made up for it with his bucket loads of common sense another trait PC lacks.

Then we move to the Finance Minister. Again Ive observed 10 of them, Names like Muldoon Douglas Birch Richardson English are some that come to mind.
The current one doesnt given get close to any of them as regards intellect common sense understanding the man and woman in the street or on the Clapham Omnibus.

The picture only gets worse the further into the Cabinet we get.
But never mind.

After barely 12 months they have created a political clusterf…. and they still have another 24 months to improve on it.

Oh dear, Ardern not quite the media superstar perhaps ? (don’t tell anyone though).
NZ Media was told they would only be allowed one question re the Meka Whaitiri report at Ardern’s daily standup because it was expected international media hordes would want quotes from the oracle.
However…. only one representative of international media turned up in the end and the limit on the number of questions from New Zealand media was removed.

      Stay away from modern high pressure TDI diesels with their incredibly high pressures (similar to pressure at which normal aluminium becomes a flowing plastic metal) and microscopic gaps around pump pistons where any detritus is lethal they can’t withstand any sort of fuel contamination. Suck through some dirt and it can be up to $10k for a fix. It is a large proportion of entire income for some garages.

        Contaminated fuel would be a good place to start, contaminants or anything that reduces the lubricity of the fuel (like mixing in petrol) can be lethal to pumps and injectors. Never let a diesel tank get too low, make sure filters good. Though however unlikely it is possible that it is just bad luck.
        
        One suggestion would be to take a sample of the fuel from both tanks tested – if contaminated maybe you would have grounds for legal remedies against you filling station or their supplier – they might pay you off just to keep you quiet.

I read the headlines only about Adern flashing herself and her child about the UN. Our media fawning over her. I know that people have short memories, she will return to the mess created here, to face a constant barrage of questions in the house about her honesty and integrity. Her answers will continue to be hollow. The local media are turning, by Christmas the chattering masses will be starting to feel uncomfortable with her as a leader.

It’s marvellous to see that Auckland libraries are joining similar institutions in other parts of the world and marking Banned Books Week. Here in Ranui library this morning I’ve looked over a nicely presented table, which features books in blank brown wrapping and helpful explanatory notes. I’ve learned, to my amazement and sadness, that Harry Potter has been booted from many US school libraries, on account of his alleged Satanism, and that Anne Frank’s diary is banned from Lebanon, on the grounds that it might create sympathy for Jews. There are several books banned in the former Soviet Union on the table too. Visitors to the library and invited to remove the brown wrappers from the books, and read them.

I am disappointed, though, that the display doesn’t feature any of the numerous books that have been banned in NZ over the years. A famous example of our own banned literature is Jean Devanny’s The Butcher Shop, a coruscating depiction of life and lust on aNZ farm which was removed from shelves in the ’20s on account of its author’s communist views, and her characters’ enjoyment of extramarital sex.

Censorship is not something new, either in NZ or elsewhere.

  I wasn’t aware that coruscating was a term that implied praise, SGA! I used it to describe Devanny’s withering criticism of NZ rural culture. I don’t think Devanny’s been ranked with NZ’s best writers by many literary historians; on the other hand, she sold a lot of tomes, getting onto bestseller lists at times. What’s important to remember is how easily her book was banned. Too many Kiwis think that the suppression of books belongs to distant, benighted societies, when their own governments have long practiced it.

    It means that parents and way you are raised, and education, have little influence over personality or intelligence. Social outcomes are however linked to family rather strongly – we don’t live in a purely egalitarian world. Identical twins raised apart have very similar personalities, and intelligence. You are 50% genetically similar to your siblings and each of your parents, so you tend to be similar to them (on average, there are always outliers)

    On an average across populations that has huge effects.
    
    But that does not stop individual people from making the best of what they have. For that to happen, people need agency: the understanding that they have a large capability to determine their outcomes.
    
    A person born with shitty running genes is never going to be an Olympic level athlete no matter how hard they try, but that does not mean they have to give up completely. They could still become an average level runner.
    
    A low intelligence person is never going to be a rocket scientist, but they can still do the best with what they have.
    
    That is why blaming everything on colonialism is so destructive. It tells people they have no control over where they are in life: Sorry mate you’re in a hole. It’s all colonialism so you have no power to fix it. Here’s some koha.
    
    Everyone has some way they can add value to society, but pretending we can all bring the same is ridiculous.

  No disrespect, but I think you’re the guy who told me here that both Europe and Africa were isolated for tens of thousands of years, until recent centuries. I do wonder, on the basis of that comment, whether you’re up with some of the research in the fields you’re dismissing as irrelevant.
  
  I’ve just been doing some background reading in archaeology and linguistics for an essay I’m supposed to write (procrastination). It’s amazing how much progress these fields have made in a few decades. We can now plot the histories of whole language families, and radiocarbon dating, DNA testing, of animals as well as humans, and stratigraphy are allowing archaeologists to reconstruct human movements with a new rigour and clarity. Knowledge is exploding. The word ‘stupid’ isn’t what comes to mind.

    Computational linguistics from cheap and widely available computing power is now pushing things along, and there is help from populations’ DNA patterns.
    
    Rather than knowledge “exploding” I would say it’s going through a “spurt”.
    
    In linguistics, it’s interesting that some of this began with the Cold War, resulting in military interest in machine immediate translation of language. There’s where the money came from for the push in linguistics by Chomsky.
    
    I don’t agree that social sciences are stupid, but they are poorly labelled by the description “sciences”. This makes us expect too much from them and sometimes leads us to give them to much respect.
    
    An example is the claim of some in anthropology that all cultures are of equal value. This, whether the culture is, on the one hand, that of a remote PNG tribe of brain-eating, koru suffering people, or, on the other hand, the culture of a more developed society – such as Europe’s, or India’s, or China’s, or Japan’s.

A headline on the Radio NZ (RNZ) web site says: “Rally supports Gisborne councillor who spoke out against racism”

In fact it is questionable that the incident entailed racism.

The report that follows the headline reveals that the rally protesters are “anti colonialism”.

The incident began with Councillor Meredith Akuhata-Brown alleging she heard a fellow councillor, Malcolm MacLean, say it was a pity more Maori weren’t killed when James Cook arrived in the area in the Poverty Bay area in 1769.

MacLean has stated what what he actually said was that it was lucky more Maori weren’t killed, and that it was a “mumbled, private conversation”.

Presumably, if MacLean is accurate, this could mean he was commenting on the fact that the contact between Cook’s men and Maori could have been been worse – in casualties.

The council’s code of conduct review board found that two councillors breached the council’s code of conduct, which was dealt with ‘informally’.

Akahuta-Brown’s “support person,” Tina Ngata, is now reported by Radio NZ as saying that racism is inherent in all of the council’s decisions, and: “All councils are institutionally racist because all councils are built out of the system of colonisation.”

You can’t extract racism out of colonisation, Ngata is reported as having said.

    But cmm it seems as the blood lines thin leading to more numbers with minimal amounts of native blood they have switched their emphasis to colonisation being the reason for their sorry situation. The Supreme Court is rightly seen as another level of government.

        Just because it is “settled” law does not mean the Supreme Court cannot reverse its previous decisions. In law, it can. Kavanaugh’s answer is an evasion, but of the sort that putative Supreme Court justices often engage in at confirmation hearings.

  Funny starboard not much from the Media party on this increase also thought somebody today said there was an extra percentage ACC tax being applied to fuel that will further drive pump prices. There will not be much reaction until it really starts to hit fixed and low income earners in the pocket from higher fuel prices and the flow on effect to everything.

Some overseas investment is valuable, but this one is hard to justify.

Manuka Health, NZ’s second biggest honey company, has been sold to a South-east Asian buyer, reports the Hooerald.

Good foreign investment: when it brings expertise that we don’t have; when it builds new industry, preferably export industry, perhaps when it opens new markets.

NZ’s honey, especially manuka honey, is in hot international demand. So much so that Asian consumers are snapping it up in NZ supermarkets and then self exporting it to Asia. The NZ honey industry doesn’t need overseas expertise, it doesn’t need overseas help with marketing, it doesn’t need overseas capital (this isn’t a capital intensive industry).

Sometimes you wonder whether NZ needs a dose of Trump-scale nationalism. We have good entrepreneurs, and fine agriculturists, but our investment community sometimes looks like a bunch of rogues hell bent on fast-and-easy money.

Meanwhile Jack5 Jones has been to China and bluntly “put China on notice over its involvement in the New Zealand logging industry.
The Minister of Regional Development has been on a trip to China to promote the new Overseas Investment Office rules and how they apply to forestry. Seems to think most will be in value added finished products while also saying some operations here are unable to get enough logs?
Oblivious of the fact a very large portion of those logs China take are low to mid grade that have not potential for adding value.

  Their companies do.
  And their companies want the cheapest and best products.
  So they probably want to make the products in their own country where their labour cost is cheaper.
