Well Jacinda, if you could tear yourself away from the narcissistic rush you get from the fawning media, you would hear a hissing.

No it’s not faint, you’ve just not heard since your surprise appointment. But the hissing is growing louder, as every New Zealander has their livelihood impacted by your fuel tax increases which are creeping through to prices and unemployment.

Went to head out to the gun club last night and the reserve fuel-light came on. Shot into the local BP and filled up….. $167.00 later I was on my way. This time last year it was about $115. That’s Labor I guess.

  There is a huge problem with looking at global petrol prices. They don’t cover the same costs.
  
  For instance, our petrol price covers ACC (ie. essentially injury insurance) while in places like USA you have to pay separate injury insurance. That makes up some of the difference.
  
  Still, when people see $50 added to a fill up and PriNZess handing out billions to universities and the Islands, they make a connection and it doesn’t look good.

  Second, you should consider those who use diesel, like the productive sector. Diesel has doubled in price since October last year.
  
  On the coast one of our outlets was nicknamed “dollar diesel” because they were always able to sell diesel below $1. This time last year it was -88 per litre, now the days of “dollar diesel” are gone with it being almost $1-70 !

  According to that chart its $NZ1.78/lit in Thailand; far cheaper than here. Min wage in that country is less than $NZ20/day. Not many people would earn fifteen thousand a year. Food is cheaper, housing can be cheaper, cars are not, pay for motorways & healthcare, so on & so forth.
  Here in Godzone nothing is cheap except small matter of healthcare, basics of education, beaches, parks, motorways (except one)

While waiting for the atm I looked to my left, “$2.79” for a Mars bar. I could have sworn they were only $0.80 the last time I looked. Petrol through the roof, Mars Bars in hyperinflation, currency in free fall. We are Venezuela, we are a basket case.

  Yes as an old boy of Massey University and with one of my sons studying there today its a shame the level of political correctness that the university has fallen into.
  The official policy of the university appears to be – all things Maori good. All white people who resist the takeover by all things Maori are bad. And white people of the right are especially bad and beyond the pale and should not even be allowed to speak in our university.
  Given that universities are the product of Western Christian civilisation and that pre European Maori had no written language, many of us find this stance a little hard to take. ?

        Massey has in the past been driven by innovation and forward thinking. It could be again.

        Maggy, do you know how these global rankings work? I’m curious – Let’s say you make the top 250 (as Auckland, Otago, Vic, and Canterbury did). If there are 2,500 universities in the global survey, then that’s top 10%, 5,000 then it’s top 5%, 10,000 then it’s top 2.5%. In absolute terms, I have no idea how well they are doing. In the USA alone, for example, most states have at least 2 or 3 major state universities (and in larger states nearly every major city has at least one significant university – UCLA, UCSD, USF, etc). Then there are the important private ones dotted throughout (e.g., Harvard, Yale, Princeton, …). And that’s just the USA – then add in the UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, Canada, Australia, etc., etc.
        We should, of course, be encouraging high standards of our own universities, but I have no feel for the context of these ratings.

It means special treatment for Maori culture and Maori people and a general lowering of standards if more Maori don’t make the cut. It undermines academic excellence and the concept of merit which needs to be at the heart of everything the university does.

        A university in this country should have NO domination by any culture in any circumstance.
        Maori had no education facilities or universities and have absolutely no place trying to dictate what the Uni does or doesn’t teach.
        The Government should be stepping in and stopping this rot but I fear it is too late.
        It is so serious and yet the takeover grows like a cancer and is going to destroy this country slowly from the inside.

The Dutch have just placed a blanket ban on a type of electric vehicle: The Stint.

Apparently one got taken out by a train recently.

The Dutch say the vehicles cannot be relied upon to brake nor to keep going.

The technology required for these vehicles is obviously not yet up to a standard where they can be considered safe yet a certain government I know have stated that they want all transport to be of this type in the very near future.

Obviously that government cares more about virtue signalling than they do about people’s safety.

  Last night in response to petrol pump rises TVNZ did a promotion (news?) piece on purchasing electric vehicles over combustion engines. However, there was not even a comparison between electric and petrol car prices, nor any information on the future replacement cost of batteries. Just a promise for many more charging stations. Tell that to the country people deep in the regions.

        Heatpumps are not a huge expense, nor is insulation except in the walls , of course.
        The cost of Double glazing is prohibitive unless it’s in combination with major alterations.
        
        A couple of years ago I was involved with just such alterations to my daughters house. When we removed the old gib we found there wasn’t even building paper under the weatherboards. No wonder the place had been cold, draughty & damp.
        
        NZs older timber frame housing, her house was built in the fifties, could be a serious health risks to poorer people.

      Was in Wanganui a weekend or 2 ago. Beautiful weather and the white tulips up the main street were gorgeous. Splendid place except the Thai restaurant didn’t have any chilli in its food!

        There are now several other competitors to Rossi offering commercial trials. The Navy and aircraft industry are also watching. Airbus has acquired patents.
        The science is becoming unteased. Universities world wide are investigating the phenomenon. It’s fascinating. It appears that subatomic particles can change states when interacting with each other with energy being released but not the usual gamma rays. Isotopic changes have been proven– a new field of science has been opened up.
        
        Rossi may yet have the last laugh. The trash to ethanol plant in Edmonton is founded on Rossi’s patent. Others have adopted his work too. NZ could do with that.

    The problem is the hilly terrain. If you look through the suburbs, every car parked on the road outside the property cannot be an electric vehicle. The owner needs a garage to charge which is powered. That puts paid to most houses in Wellington.
    Also those who are renting cannot rely on the landlord to provide a garage with charging. So thats another third of the population that the Tesla is unsuitable for.

        Have a look at your local Warehouse. If there isn’t already a ‘Charging Station’ installed, one is certainly going to appear soon. The company seems to have gone all ‘gween’ and are installing ‘Charging Stations’ for their customer’s electric cars. That they are loosing custom by depriving ‘normal’ vehicles of one, perhaps two, parking spaces, doesn’t seem to bother them.

Hopefully Chris can somehow hold them to account for this.
I find it hypocritical of this govt. to talk about “caring” when they are cutting HEALTH services, due to a lack of funds and not clinical need.

      Actually I believe that most can manage with 95 but 98 is recommended. If you have the car “chipped” they often include alternative profiles for the different octane ratings.
      
      Turbo cars have the most issues but some modern direct injection engines run at pretty high compression ratios (my VW is at 11.5:1 for example) and that can lead to pre-detonation if the octane rating is too low.
      
      I use 98 but I’ve run both on 95 without issues. There are quite a few places in NZ without much access to 98. Example Wanaka, nearest 98 is Cromwell or Queenstown, so 95 it is if you’re visiting Treble Cone with your Quattro Audi.

  If you want economy and low maintenance costs buy japanese cars that use small petrol turbo charged (various) or Atkinson cycle (mostly toyota). We only use high power about 0.1% of the time when driving so best to use a small engine optimised for efficient 10-25kW cruise power that can get high power via turbocharger when required. Stay away from expensive to buy and maintain European cars, and don’t buy anything that needs 95 or 98, the premium you pay isn’t worth it in improved economy.

Gaza: An Inquest into its Martyrdom by Norman Finkelstein

To plumb the depths of human savagery is a formidable task, and not a pleasant one. The task is undertaken with rigorous argument and scrupulous scholarship in Norman Finkelstein’s monumental “inquest into Gaza’s martyrdom.” And with undisguised passion. As he writes, “this book rises to a crescendo of anger and indignation.” It is hard to see how anyone with a shred of humanity could react differently to the bitter record unraveled here.

There have been evocative, often shattering, accounts of the tragedy of Gaza. Some of the most infuriating are live testimony from the scene during the periodic escalations of the crimes: among them the reports by the remarkable Norwegian surgeon Mads Gilbert from the trauma wards of al-Shifa hospital and the painful daily reports by the courageous Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer. There have also been studies by prestigious commissions of inquiry and by the major international human-rights groups, all mined in Finkelstein’s inquest. Understanding has also been enriched by work of fine journalists and scholars. But in its comprehensive sweep, deep probing and acute critical analysis, Finkelstein’s study stands alone.

Concluding his inquest, Finkelstein cites warnings by UNCTAD and other international monitors that Gaza could become literally uninhabitable by 2020 “due to ongoing de-development, eight years of economic blockade and three operations” from 2009 to 2014. The grim figures on the availability of potable water, energy and housing, on unemployment and dependence on humanitarian aid even for food, depict all too clearly the nature of the catastrophe as 2020 approaches.

Responding to the imminent catastrophe, President Trump ordered that the U.S. contribution to UNRWA — “a lifeline for Palestinians” — be cut to one-sixth the scheduled funding. As he explained, he saw no reason to fund people who show “no appreciation or respect” as he dangles before their eyes his “ultimate deal” while handing Greater Jerusalem over to Israel.

The idea that nearly two million people, median age 17, are locked by force in a small cage that is soon to become uninhabitable while the world looks away is almost unfathomable. True, there is sometimes a reaction of disgust; in one recent case, on May 14, 2018, when, on the eve of Nakba Day, split-scene photographs appeared showing Israeli snipers expertly murdering desperate Gazans protesting their martyrdom, alongside images of Ivanka Trump smiling happily with a beaming Netanyahu at the celebration of the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. But such moments are rare.

Visiting Gazan health centers after the Israeli atrocities of spring 2018, UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl found scenes that were “shocking and deeply disturbing,” including “a pattern of entry and exit wounds that indicates ammunition used caused severe damage to internal organs, muscle tissue and bones.” One hundred seventeen were killed by Israel forces during peaceful protests and 1,200 injured, many at a distance from the troops and posing no imaginable threat — even a young woman bravely tending to the injured. What he found is “truly staggering,” Krähenbühl reported.

        Chomsky’s development of grammatical theory was financed by the United States military, who were seeking immediate universal language translation. What a hypocrite Chomsky was to become an international peace activist.
        
        Chomsky’s linguistics theory centres on a language acquisition device or LAD, a hypothetical tool hardwired into the brain that helps children rapidly learn and understand language.
        
        This concept is still very controversial.

I have thought the tests are too hard for years. I know of two middle aged ladies who have tried for years to get their restricted licences, one has failed 4 times, one has failed 3 times. They are both very careful drivers.

The Government’s been given yet another loud wake-up call from the business community, with the influential NZIER Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion showing another drop in business confidence.

This is the statement from NZIER:

The latest NZIER Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion (QSBO) shows a further deterioration in business confidence. A net 28 percent of businesses expect economic conditions to worsen – the lowest level since March 2009.

Firms’ own domestic trading activity is a better indicator of GDP growth than business confidence. Firms’ own activity for the September quarter and expectations for the next quarter both fell, indicating a slowing in economic growth over the second half of 2018. … read more via hyperlink above …

New Zealanders’ concerns about housing issues grow, while New Zealanders are also feeling more positive about the Labour-led government compared to last year when National was in power.

New Zealanders have nominated housing (50%) as the most important issue facing the nation in the latest Ipsos New Zealand Issues Monitor, released today ( 13 September ) . Poverty (32%), healthcare (31%), cost of living (26%) and crime (24%) rounded out the other top concerns.

The Ipsos New Zealand Issues Monitor regularly asks over 600 New Zealanders to select from a list of 20 issues the ones that they feel are the three most important issues facing the country.

I hear that if you are a maori you going to get a finger/camera up your bum 10 years earlier (50 not 60) than europeans. This is because maori Life expectancy is less. What if you are 50% maori, will it be 55 or 25% 57.5 ???.
No as usual so long as you can name a tribe, hapu or whānau your in, no matter what your genetic disposition is.

  Interesting logic by those wanting earlier bowel cancer tests for Maori (btw. just done with a sample, no colonoscopy unless cancer suspected). Bowel cancer tests are producing a far greater prevention statistic in non-Maori, but because Maori have a 7 year shorter life-span, it’s our duty to give them earlier bowel cancer tests.

  This is an old chestnut: years ago, I argued with both my local DHB and the National Ethics Advisory Committee over preferential health care for Maori (they were being given free gym membership in order to improve cardio-respiratory fitness). The response was, “We get more bang for our buck this way!” (I kid you not).
  The supposed ethical argument for this discriminatory treatment is, presumably, a Utilitarian one: that the right moral action is that which creates the greatest happiness for the greatest number – crude, but sometimes effective.
  However, in the case of Maori, as there are no longer any pure-bred members of that group, Maori identity is nowadays a matter of choice: if one self-identifies as Maori, then that’s it, regardless of blood lineage. Now, no strategy can be ethically defended on the basis of self-selection, if that represents the pursuit of self-interest, at cost to others – as applies here. For every colonoscopy done on Maori in this selected group, a non-Maori has to go down the list, and could have to wait unacceptably long (the pressure on the service is, I gather, pretty extreme now).
  The only viable solution to the sort of dilemma raised by this example is to completely eliminate any social policy (including franchise) that is predicated on ethno-racial identity. Period.

The sad thing with our trade defecit (ie exports versus imports) we always have one. We hardly ever have surpluses.
Then ontop of that we always have a negative balance in invisibles – bank profits and insurance etc etc.
So we keep having to borrow money.
This is not the government, but the private sector.

We need a pro business and a pro exports government

  Yeah I studied perception of photos years ago in uni, and it’s very easy to take any photo and convince people it shows the opposite of what is true. People think they are seeing a photo so it must be real. Ditto video – as CNN has demonstrated, just crop before and after, add voice over and voila, you see the opposite of what happened.

The Washington Post has a very interesting letter from Rachel Mitchell, the independent attorney engaged to question Kavanaugh last week. https://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/documents/politics/rachel-mitchells-analysis/3221/

She concludes that “… Dr Ford identified other witnesses to the event, and these witnesses either refuted her allegations or failed to corroborate them. For the reasons discussed below, I do n ot think that a reasonable prosecutor would bring this case based on the evidence before the Committee. Nor do I believe that this evidence is sufficient to satisfy the preponderance-of-the-evidence standard.”

Mitchell then goes item-by-item through the flaws in Ford’s allegations, and provides a time-line of how the allegations were handled after she raised them with Congresswoman Eshoo on 6 July.

This is a dreadful blight on the American notion of civility and fairness. Actions such as those the Democrats have and are taking over Kavanaugh show the dark side of the political bias that is sweeping the Western world. Including here in New Zealand.

  And BTW you don’t understand government accounting. Those Ministerial cars cost the “taxpayer” little more than the cost of the diesel that runs them. Most of the money is simply transfered from Ministerial services to DIA. Both part of the Crown.

  Large swathes of land will be covered by oceans in the next millennia which is a fraction of a blink of an eye on a geological time frame. I think scientists have vastly underestimated the official sea level rise predictions.
  
  A 65 meter rise is possible with the melting of just 2 icesheets in Antarctica. Once melting starts a positive feedback loop is established and little can be done.
  
  Of course, I could be completely wrong. And, those who predict no rise in sea levels could be wrong too (they are already wrong because the sea level is rising at 3.2mm a year right now)

It sounds like a number of landlords are pulling out of the rental market due to strict new rules.

And, some agencies are dropping rentals that don’t meet the new legal requirements.

I predict rents will rise, there will be desperate rental shortages, nationwide. Families will be living in cars / garages in greater numbers than ever seen before in the history of the nation.

The absurd thing is, that many of the newly homeless will have voted labour!

First off, a picture showing a young boy of perhaps 8 or 9. Well all crims were once young boys or girls. A picture of him as a kid is deliberately misleading. He was put away when he was 17.

“Travion Blount, who was sentenced as a teen to six life terms for stealing cash and a few phones,…”, so just a wee bit of mischief got him 118 years! Terrible!

… except… “[He] took a gun to a party in 2006 and demanded cash, drugs and anything else… At 17, he was convicted of 49 separate offences and what would have been a 14-year jail term became 118 years.”

So 49 separate offences by the age of 17 and the last armed robbery got him a 3 strikes conviction. This boy was on a one-way ticket to badness.

You will be relieved to know, that now he’s 27 and has been pardoned, likely to be released soon.

So not exactly the portrayed story of a sweet little kid going away for 118 years. Anyone that puts money in Herald’s pockets should feel ashamed that they support such “journalism”.

So another immigrant has effectively used us for our passport to get a back door to another country, probably leaving family here to suck off the taxpayer and tax will go to another country!

One of Kiwiblog’s South African-born followers might be able to throw light on the background of the incoming vice-chancellor of Canterbury University.

Professor Cheryl de la Rey shares the surname of one of the Boers’ hero generals, Koos de la Rey. But when she became vice-chancellor the University of Pretoria in 2009, University World News described her as the first black person to take the job. Her photograph could be of a person either white or non-white.

Aged about 58, de la Rey grew up in Sydenham, Durban. Her academic field is psychology.

De la Rey steps into the post as the university increasingly Maorifies. University publications refer to “Waitaha Canterbury” and to “Aotearoa New Zealand”.

The university is promoting an “Equity and Diversity Plan 2018-20” to “deepen that culture of inclusiveness.”

      There are only 2 ways for a comment to be deleted. First, DPF deletes it. That happens rarely, as far as I know. Second, 5 different people click on the report button, and your comment goes into moderation until DPF checks it. I’ve seen cases (involving Hugh) where a comment disappeared but reappeared later, presumably after DPF released it. My view is that, compared to other blogs, DPF has the moderating balance about right – particularly as he’s busy running a business and caring for a family.
      
      But, to your point, you’ve made a tenuous connection between an announcement that Jami-Lee Ross is taking medical leave for personal health reasons and a leaked National Party announcement. I didn’t see your comment. It’s possible, though, that 5 people reported it on the basis that it made light of a serious mental health issue. I assume you’d take the same view if someone on your political side of the fence went on leave for similar reasons and others sought to make fun of it?

        Two of my comments today and one a few days ago have disappeared completely along with all the sub-threaded replies to that comment. I can’t see them so they have been deleted.
        
        I’m not making fun of Jami-Lee Ross – I wish him well – I just wish Simon Bridges didn’t lie to the public today. You’d know that if the comment hadn’t been erased.
        
        Bridges must think we are stupid, and it is appalling that he and whoever put Ross up to the leak (Cameron Slater) would use mental health as a shield which to hide behind.
        
        I actually applaud Farrar doing a bit of moderating for once even if he’s censoring free speech on this occasion because he’s done a piss-poor job to date.

      Jami-Lee Ross expressly denied he had anything to do with the leak because he was expecting this sad type of politicking. You say the leaker had been revealed. He had not. You are deliberately taking a position against him without evidence. More MP’s should take leave–it’s a very stressful job 25hrs/day 55 weeks/year.
      
      Freedom of speech may not extend to a statement of opinion as an alternative. Damaging peoples reputation on say so may have legal implications.
